Now is the time to consider those freeze-proof faucets! • The icy weather can cause severe personal and vehicular accidents, so stock up on ice melt, snow shovels, and consider a snowblower. • Drafty doors and windows are typically the biggest culprits with regard to a home’s heating system overrunning; and weatherstripping and caulking are the place to start. • Up-keeping the roof is an important safeguard against hidden water damage; replace shingles as they become damaged. 2021 has been a year of continual change, which makes me appreciate the things that have been constant in my life – family, friends, and meaningful moments. With the holiday season fast approaching, remember to cherish the moments, traditions, and people you love because those memories and feelings will be what stays with you forever. Speaking of memories, the Mission Archives has launched their Life at TWO Metres Postcard collection. See the hundreds of submissions from Mission residents documenting life with COVID-19 at missionarchives.com. We're slowly starting to see in-person events popping up around town. They have been met with much anticipation. Don’t miss out on some of the wonderful art exhibits at the Mission Art Gallery and shows coming to The Clarke Theatre. Note that the Remembrance Day parade will not happen this year as usual but will be a smaller ceremony at the Legion.

@deeehabs

There are very few businesses and organizations that have been unaffected by the pandemic. For local organizations, there has been a reduction in membership, engagement, and funding. Participate in the many fundraisers happening this winter. Special Olympics Mission, along with other non-profits are looking for volunteers. It’s a great way to give back to your community, gain experience or volunteer hours, and just feel good all around.

@ e ha hiilto This holiday season let’s try to keep our dollars within our community – there are so many new businesses and restaurants opening all throughout Mission. Stop in and say hello. Tis’ the season to love, support, and celebrate Mission. Happy Holidays!

You don't need to leave your home to live better...

Many older adults want to stay in their homes as they age. The desire for familiarity and comfort is very important, although can be met with much difficulty due to increasing disabilities and/or illness. With over 12 years of extensive experience, Stella Laidman presents the opportunity for loved ones to receive high-quality, personal care in the comfort of their own home. As a Registered Care Aide, Stella can be relied on to help patients remain active in their home and community, as well as also offer support and companionship to those with medical conditions, functional limitations and mental health complications . When inquiring as to how Stella ended up in this line of work, she takes us back to her days working in the hospitality industry. "My favourite part of working at the restaurant, was serving the seniors that came in for breakfast and lunch. I knew then my career path would lead me to that of a care aide. " Stella offers her clients a better quality of life, with her diverse range of care services. With flexible and customizable care plans, Stella can be counted on to be there to provide loved ones the help and support they deserve. Guided by love, empathy, patience and compassion, Stella offers a personal, patient-centred approach.

"I believe in treating each person with dignity and respect, and involving them in all decisions about their health."

Mama Bear’s Duds n Suds I’m not sure if you remember me. I came to your laundromat for about a year just before the fire. I was wondering if I would ever see your face again. It warms my heart to see your laundromat come to life again. I really enjoyed my time chatting with locals and bringing you cookies. Messages like this have continued to flood in ever since a fire destroyed Elizabeth and Trevor Levitt’s laundromat business in 2019. Being a mom to seven children, Liz started volunteering at the laundromat to get out of the house. For a year and a half, she started to forge friendships and felt like she was part of the community. The laundromat has been a part of Mission for 30 years and when the owner decided to sell in 2018, Liz jumped at the opportunity to have her own business in the community she calls home Liz’ nurturing attitude and willingness to listen and help anyone who walks through the doors has secured her name as “Mama Bear”. Mama Bear’s Duds n Suds was born. She believes that everyone should have access to clean clothes and is willing to help those who may be

struggling with those costs. She loves the hustle and bustle of her business and feels fortunate by the friendships that have come out of it. When her laundromat burned down, she was and continues to be overwhelmed by the support of her community. It was a particularly difficult blow after they had lost their home to a fire 13 years ago in Port Coquitlam. Due to financial challenges and the pandemic, it was a long road to rebuilding the business. She could not have done it without the help of her friends, family and particularly her husband of 30 years, Trevor. Liz and Trevor are so excited to open their doors again. They re-vamped their layout with more machines and folding spaces and created a kidfriendly area. They will offer laundry drop-off services and there will always be water and hot coffee if you want to come in and say hello. Mama Bear’s Duds n Suds, 32618 Logan Ave.

MISSION SPOTLIGHT:

Goldenball Mercantile With much anticipation, Goldenball Mercantile opened its doors this past September. There is a signature golden ball in the store, around which the idea of the store was built. As its name implies, the store is a juxtaposition of shiny and modern, yet classic and vintage. Lush, opulent art pieces are surrounded by fun, unique treasures – Goldenball is a sort of renaissance in Mission’s retail landscape. Born and raised in Mission, Brooke Meeker was excited to set up shop in historic Downtown. She remembers this 1920s Sydney Wilson building from her childhood, which was home to several different barbershops, the Urban Mouse Store, The Sweet Spot Café and eventually Mission BBQ Garden Café. When the opportunity to purchase this historical building presented itself, she knew it was time to realize her “goldenball” dream.

SPONSORED BY mission

community skillscentre www.missioncsc.org

When designing her space, Brooke tried to retain as much of the building’s original character as possible – from the stained-glass store front to the light fixtures and the flooring. This building is even more sentimental because her father, as a child, started to get his haircut here when it used to be Don’s Barbershop from 1948 to 1971. Stop by during this holiday season and see the beautifully curated collection of home décor, original art, and gifts. Brooke is bringing all her favourite things to Mission. Get ready to be Goldenball-ified!

Ami’s

Review

Have you ever gotten goosebumps from a book? This is my goosebump book. I’ll be a fan forever, and might even get a tattoo to commemorate my adoration... well, I’m not sure about that, but you never know!

to keep her results a secret. She is what’s called Divergent, and in this society, what makes you different also makes you dangerous. Despite her special gifting, she knows she must commit to one faction only, and deny the other parts of herself forever.

Divergent by Veronica Roth, is the first book of a 4-book series, and 2021 is it’s ten year anniversary. What better way to celebrate then with a review, and a suggestion for some addictive winter reading? And before you say, “I think I saw the movie...” Stop. Just stop.

As Beatrice makes her decision, and chooses a life that only partly represents her, the seemingly perfect world around her - a society where division has created peace begins to crumble. The factions are not maintaining harmony like they were intended to. Rather, the government sanctioned divisions within society are pushing the people to rally against each other, forcing a future where one way of thinking at the cost of all others will lead to ultimate segregation and destruction. To fight is the only hope, and Beatrice, as a Divergent, has a special part to play in it all.

You know the movie is never as good as the book. It is a future Chicago, where society is divided into five separate ‘factions’ based on virtues. It’s the perfect society where everyone knows their place, their beliefs, and who their like-minded friends are. Outside the boundaries of their perfect factions and their perfect city? Danger and fear. The story opens with 16-year-old Beatrice preparing for the aptitude test that will reveal which faction she belongs in Abnegation (the selfless - her family’s faction), Candor (the honest), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (the peaceful), or Dauntless (the brave). She completes her test, but her results are inconclusive. Instead of revealing just one faction, it has found that she could belong in three. She is instructed

This book is a great introduction to reading futuristic and dystopian fiction, especially if this is a new genre for you. Perfect for teens and adults alike, it would make a great gift. It also begs the question: Should we allow ourselves to be divided, or should we fight for ways in which we can be united? Give it a read yourself and come talk to me about it. Maybe we can have goosebumps together... It’s on the shelves now at Totally Book-ish.

EMKAO owner Ayissi Nymeba shows the Mayor and Council how chocolate is made.

City of Mission’s Annual Business Visitation With Mayor Paul Horn and Council Members This year’s business visits were a great success! Mayor and council members, along with representatives of the Economic Development Select Committee, met with local businesses to learn about their products, services, and to understand how they managed through the pandemic. They also discussed current challenges they are addressing and their plans for the future. 1) EMKAO- Ayissi Nyemba explains how she makes her own chocolate! Her unique business is one of two in all of Canada. Her story is incredible, she arrived in Canada in 2016 and launched her company that brings in cocoa beans from her family’s farm in Cameroon, Africa to Mission B.C. EMKAO is se ng the precedent for ethically and sustainably sourced cocoa. 2) Fraser Pacific Enterprises- Council members tour the site at Fraser Pacific Enterprises. Their company is an excava on contractor founded in 2004, specializing in providing crushed mineral rock, a necessary element for the manufacture of cement. Mayor Horn will be continuing this effort on an ingoing basis. National Day for Truth & Reconciliation Mission commemorated its first National Day for Truth & Reconciliation at Fraser River Heritage Park this past September 30th. Phyllis Webstad, of the Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation, joined our Indigenous elders to honour the survivors of the residential school system, their families and communities.

Folk and Words: Michelle Rhodes & John Gogo

The City of Mission and Mission Folk Music Festival have joined forces to present the first of the series "Folk and Words", celebrating local writers and musicians. Michelle Rhodes read excerpts from her new book "The Tree Farm - The Evolution of Canada's First Community Forest", followed by John Gogo's soothing and humourous logging and coal-mining songs.

Spin-A-Thon with Spinning4Diversity Over 50 spinners from all over of the Lower Mainland participated in this 2-day event, sharing their personal stories and experiences. The underlying theme was to keep the lines of communication open to combat racism and build our communities together . Organized by Ken Herar and fiancé Pamela Hilton, groups rode in shifts with various co-hosts, including Mike Bismeyer, kindness and anti-bullying advocate and Savita Shah, award recipient for Kindness, Compassion and Advocacy - Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation. Also moderating was Obi Onyemaobi, recipient of the Champion of Diversity for Youth in the Fraser Valley. To find out more or to get involved, email spinning4diversity@gmail.com

Its resilience and success helped pave the way for the community forestry model in BC. Operating under BC Tree Farm Licence #26, these 10,000 hectares of cedar, hemlock and fir forest straddle the lower reaches of Stave Lake, a scenic area of historical and economic significance to the First Nations, the province, industry and the wider Mission community. This book captures the history of the municipal forest, known as the Tree Farm, and demonstrates why locally managed forests can innovate and generate a diversity of benefits for surrounding communities. The Tree Farm describes the trials and opportunities in the Mission Municipal Forest, including fire management, fluctuating log prices, surging numbers of visitors, and the need to take steps towards reconciliation.
