BACK TO SCHOOL The kids are heading back to school, and suddenly you’ve got free time. Why not put that time to good use and do some projects around the house? Here are a few ideas if you’re having a hard time figuring out what to do! Build a picture ledge! School photos are coming out soon, and they need a prominent spot to sit on display. A simple shelf with decorative moulding works wonders for displaying your favourite photos, art works and diplomas. Choose just the right spot in your living room, bedroom
or office, and let your decor evolve as you vary your displays. This is a project that can be completed in a few hours. This easy-to-build picture ledge will hold most types of frames. Finishing moulding makes all the difference, transforming a simple ledge into an attractive, and decorative element.
Design a workstation for you or your kids! Everyone likes their own personalized space, so why not take the time and invest in a better home office? va home office environment that's free of distraction and conducive to concentration. Whether for home-based work, telework, schoolwork or for centralizing the general paperwork, the home office has become an essential part of our lives. We’ve got everything you need here to help make the ideal space for you. Need an example? Ample storage is essential for a productive workspace. Keep the following in mind: ● Shelves above the work station for active files, frequently referenced material
● Compartments (trays/ boxes/holders) for pencils, paper clips, sticky notes ● A filing system for organizing important documents and client files ● Bookcases for books and anything else which is used fairly frequently, but perhaps not daily ● A closet for records or files Order online or come see what we’ve got in store! DUE TO COVID-19 ECONOMIC HARDSHIPS
MISSION'S NON-PROFITS ARE WORKING TOGETHER
The last 18 months have been enormously challenging for the non-profits that provide so many wonderful programs and services to Mission residents. Fundraisers were cancelled, galas postponed, and then everything was postponed again. The capacity and modes to raise funds were severely limited, nega vely impac ng the budgets, and thus, programming abili es of so many non-profit organiza ons that serve children, seniors, and residents throughout Mission. From there, this idea was born:
“What if we asked every resident of Mission, all 40,000 of them, to just donate one dollar, on one day, with one Mission – to support Mission? The Op mist Club teamed up with the Rotary Clubs of Mission and together they developed a plan. On Saturday, November 20th businesses all over Mission will be asking patrons to donate a dollar towards the Mission – our Mission. In September, we will be selec ng 8 addi onal not-for-profit organiza ons to partner with us in this ini a ve. With their members, they will be out in the community on Saturday November 20th reminding all Mission residents about the many sports groups and service organiza ons that con nue to work relessly to enrich our lives. All of the funds raised in retail establishments throughout Mission will then be evenly divided by these groups. But, wait. There’s more! We will also have a website: www.OneDollarOneDay.ca where Mission residents can donate either to the overall fundraiser or to the specific non-profit they would like to support.
As a community, we would be well served to rally behind the non-profits that support us. Hover you phone camera over QR code it will take you directly to donation page.

Harrison Lavender ... is a boutique lavender farm nestled near beautiful Harrison Lake, dedicated to creating lavender products for home, body, mind, and soul. Lavender is said to have many soothing properties beneficial for your health. Walking among the rows, the smell will surround you. After a busy life in the city, Pavol and Zuzana Palovic decided to slow their pace and start a farm in Agassiz. They fell in love with the Harrison area because of its natural and serene beauty. Pavol’s background is in air traffic control, there was a steep learning curve farming lavender, but now he feels at home among the plants. His wife, Zuzana, was an architect in Slovakia, using her skills to design their Farm Building, where they process and sell lavender honeys, oils, soaps, teas and more. With the help of Community Futures North Fraser, Pavol and Zuzana were able to complete the construction of their Farm Building this past spring and have been open for business ever since. Harrison Lavender is a labour of love, from the harvesting to drying and processing. You can visit their boutique or shop online at: www.harrisonlavender.com

How Important are
Good
Listing Photos?
There are two trends impacting real estate photography that you should know about if you’re thinking of selling this year. First, more than ever before, buyers are relying on pictures to decide whether or not to schedule a viewing. They expect to be able to go online and “tour” your home via the photography. If they don’t form a good impression of your home from the pictures, they may quickly lose interest in your listing. Second, everyone is a photographer these days! Most people have phones with cameras, and many think they can take a decent picture. Unfortunately, taking a “decent picture” isn’t good enough. Your listing photos need to accomplish a lot. They must: • give buyers the information they need: room sizes, layout, views, property details, etc;
Tom Osterberg Real Estate Representative Lighthouse Realty Ltd Cell 604-615-6446 www.TomOsterberg.realtor fraservalleytom@gmail.com
• showcase the most enticing features of your home; • communicate the functionality, spaciousness and style of each room; • provide a sense of what it’s going to be like to live there; and, much more. In short, listing photos need to help sell your property. When you consider that these pictures are often the first look-see buyers get of your home, you can appreciate how important they are. So, don’t leave listing photos to chance. There is an art and science to taking them. Think of it this way. If better listing photos encourage just five percent more buyers to schedule a viewing, that could result in a faster sale at a higher price. Having professionally taken photos, that are ready when your home hits the market is an integral part of my marketing strategy. Paying attention to the details is what will make your move go smooth, Call me today at 604-615-6446 to find out what else I do to get you top dollar for your home!

Ami’s
Review
Do you remember the story The Lottery? Written by Shirley Jackson in the fifties, it was thrust upon many of us by Classic-loving English teachers, or gobbled up by those of us with a delight in macabre literature. One of my personal favourites, it is disgusting and horrible, and I highly recommend it, especially if you’re fascinated by twisted tales of governance and utilitarianism. The Lottery is Jackson’s best known story, followed by The Haunting at Hill House, which received wild attention a few years back due to the Netflix movie (I’m not brave enough to watch that!). We Have Always Lived in the Castle is Jackson’s last book before her death, and as her writing falls under Horror/Gothic, I thought it would be great fun to highlight this book for you as we head into the season of pumpkins. When I think of Horror, I think of Stephen King’s Carrie. This is NOT that. If I could make up my own genre, I would call it Psychologically Chilling. I LOVE psychologically chilling! But I’m not into freaked out, scared to be alone, terror. Okay? Just so we’re clear. This is not that. It is, however, both a mystery and a story of family love. It is strange, sinister, foreboding, and a bit twisted. My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. I have often thought that with any luck at all I could have been born a werewolf, because the two middle fingers on both my hands are the same length, but I have had to be content with what I had. I dislike washing myself, and dogs, and noise, I like my sister Constance, and Richard Plantagenet, and Amanita phalloides, the death-cap mushroom. Everyone else in my family is dead.
And so begins the first chapter and our introduction to the Blackwood family, or what’s left of them. Six years ago, most of the family died after a family dinner because of arsenic in the sugar bowl. Who killed them? We have to read on, as Merricat’s (Mary Katherine’s nickname) deceptively childish voice fills us in on the details of their existence, including Constance’s crippling agoraphobia and obsession with cooking, Uncle Julian’s endless and senile loop of trying to figure out who committed the murders, and Merricat’s hate and distrust of the gossiping villagers and any other outsiders. Merricat is now eighteen, but through the narration of the story it is obvious that she is stuck in a younger mind, perhaps a mind from six years ago. This remaining Blackwoods survive together, shut off from the outside world with only Merricat going to get groceries and library books. They are... happy? At least they’ve adapted to living under constant suspicion. But then... Change comes in the form of a distant gold-digging cousin, Charles, who is set on marrying Constance and inheriting the family money. His intrusion into their lives creates a rising panic in Merricat, as the carefully protected life she leads in her disturbingly structured world is threatened. This is a story about family relationships, oppression, jealousy and the decent into madness and isolation when things don’t go as planned. If you enjoy excellent writing and darker psychological themes, it will fascinate you until the very end. Read on a dark night with a mug of tea to warm you. Maybe skip the sugar. We Have Always Lived In the Castle is on the shelves now at Totally Book-ish.

MISSION SPOTLIGHT:
Olde News Vintage and Vinyl If you love a treasure hunt, you need to stop into Olde News Vintage and Vinyl. Tucked away behind Bee Thai on First Avenue, you will find your fill of records, t-shirts, antiques, and vintage items. Oke Chornick was born and raised in Mission and having grown up with this small town, she decided it was the perfect place to open her shop. Olde News Vintage was born out of her love of music and “crazy, old stuff”. She loves to collect vintage or antique items because of the character and stories that are associated with them. As early as 7 years old, Oke would use her allowance money to buy records and rock t-shirts. Oke started working at Any Lane Records where she was able to share her passion for music. Eventually she decided to open her own business where she could curate all her favourite items.

Oke is also a woman of many talents. She is a drummer in two local bands, Random Dander and Hollow Groves. She draws, paints and designs artwork. And sometimes, you will see her snapping photos behind a camera. Stop in and say hello to Oke and hear her entertaining stories while you rummage through one-of-a-kind clothes, old records, and collectibles.

Meet Manny, a lifetime Mission resident, who loves his community. Manny is quick to recognize and showcase how caring and welcoming our community really is. That is exactly how his slogan came to be... 'Manny knows Mission'. “Mission has the capability to draw in people and entice them to move to our small community,” Manny explains, with much pride and admiration in his voice. “It makes it easy and fun to be a real estate agent here.”
Mission is surrounded by awe-inspiring beauty. A multitude of freshwater lakes, breathtaking vistas, cascading waterfalls and majestic mountains embellish our backyard. Manny took us on a tour of his beloved little town, to show us what he knows and loves about Mission. Each of Mission's public parks offers something unique to our community, but according to Manny, there is one slice of nature that stands out above the rest. Fraser River Heritage Park. This park offers breathtaking views of the valley. Numerous walks through fields, forest and gardens makes it ideal for the perfect afternoon stroll. Next we visited Cascade Falls, a journey that took us through the backroads of Mission. This route revealed the undiscovered, yet picturesque beauty of the countryside. Winding roads, forest groves and rolling farmlands presenedt an idyllic, postcard-like scene at each turn. Cascade Falls was nothing short of grandiose and this natural wonder stood stupendous in stature. A short incline trail led us up to a viewing platform and a suspension bridge, which scanned the canyon.
From there, we made our way into Historical Downtown Mission. This unique downtown core represents everything that is hip and modern, while still maintaining the nostalgia of days gone by. Manny was quick to point out his office . “There is no place in Mission I would rather be,” he admits. “Downtown Mission is the heart and soul of the community.” Feeling more adventurous and ready to experience the thunder, we continued on to the Mission Raceway. This spectator indulgence is not to be missed! A staple in the community, this facility features a drag strip, a 9-turn road course and a motocross track. It’s exhilarating & certainly sets hearts racing.
The afternoon concluded with a meander through the Silverdale Creek Wetlands. This peaceful landscape offers a quaint boardwalk trail through the estuary and is very popular with bird watchers and nature lovers. “I bring my family here a lot ,” he says, smiling. “It’s our happy place.” A day full of Mission gems and there were more Manny wanted to show us. BUT... he had to run. Manny had a date at his very favourite Mission location. His best friend’s gym… the Fitness Lab.
RUCHI’S THAILAND MUST SEE TRAVEL TIPS...
Ruchi from World Odyssey Travel loved her adventures in Thailand and she recommends Phuket and Bangkok be included on your Travel Bucket List. Here are some of Ruchi’s Thailand Must See Travel Tips... “Phuket is one of the biggest and most popular destinations in Thailand. With its white sand beaches and many beautiful islands to explore, Phuket was one of the most memorable experiences I had while in Thailand. We stayed at a hotel with private access to Karon Beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you will find world class spas and massage centres. Some of the massage therapists at Karon Beach use royal Thai honey, black sesame and even chocolate during their treatments - definitely one of my ‘must do’ activities in Phuket. Our hotel also featured rooms with their own private plunge pool - what a luxury! We were able to walk freely to take photos and admire the carvings and paintings at Karon Temple, which is open to visitors any day of the week. The temple also hosts a famous market with lots of delicious food to enjoy. Phuket street food is fun, cheap, and a great way to experience real Thai food. Pad Thai is my favourite food, with its rice noodles which are stir fried with eggs, tofu, fish sauce, shrimp, garlic, shallots, and red chilli pepper and served with lime, peanuts and bean sprouts. There is so much food to explore in Phuket including many high end, fine dining restaurants. North of Phuket, is the Thai capital Bangkok, one of the nicest cities in the world and full of action! Bangkok is a place where you can wander, eat and imbibe while enjoying beautiful temples, touts and many other wonderful attractions. You can find experiences that are inexpensive or on the pricey side and the variety of unique and exciting attractions made me fall in love with the city. Bangkok is also a great place for shopping for everything from high end to cheap souvenirs and collectables. If you enjoy some hustle and bustle, the best place to stay in Bangkok is Sukhumvit Road where there is a happening nightlife scene and lots of delicious street food. We also enjoyed our visit to a floating market, Bangkok’s Chinatown and the National Museum. Overall, our adventures in Thailand were wonderful and we had a great experience. I definitely recommend a visit to Thailand and would be happy to help you plan a bucket list vacation just for you!”
