Homers Lines Hello everybody and welcome along again to Homers Heath where we play our fifth home league game of this new season, which gives us a slightly imbalanced look at games played so far, as of the seven Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixtures played so far only two have seen us on our travels, the first one away at Chipping Sodbury FC and during this week away at Street. I suppose this glut of home fixtures helps us in one way, that we had built up fifteen points from five games so far this term, and of course it's nice to see everybody here on a regular basis, especially when the weather is good, and eventually it all evens itself out and we will catch up with away fixtures no doubt as the season ticks on. At this point I would like to give a big warm Buckland style welcome to the players, management team, club officials and spectators from Melksham that have made the journey down to Devon this afternoon to cheer their team on. We all hope you enjoy yourselves during your short stay with us today and will join us in the clubhouse after the final whistle to have a bite to eat and a pint before making a safe journey home. For those who haven't made the visit to Melksham's wonderful new ground I suggest it's worth a journey the next time we play there, so come along and cheer us on and see what a truly wonderful stadium and surrounding area Melksham have inherited. It took a little time getting it all sorted out, and the move was delayed a couple of times but it was really worth the wait, it's not often I get green eyed over other club setups but this one is certainly the exception. Also, since the move to their Eastern Way ground the attendances have also improved remarkably with the best gate so far this season, being 392 and the lowest 354. Of course Melksham will be rivals with us for

wottonprinters.co.uk

promotion into the Southern League South and West Division as both clubs have ambitions to play at a higher level, and to be honest probably have the two best grounds in the Western League and will have no trouble being accepted into the step above in the pyramid system if we can both finish in a place that would allow us both to do so. As this season we are led to believe it may be as many as three teams promoted up into the league above, because the FA want to rejig some of the leagues and need teams to move not only upwards but also sideways to complete their plan of introducing extra divisions at certain levels in some areas of the country. Of course the signed on to there are also a few other teams in this Toolstation Western League Premier Division that will qualify with the right things in place to give them a ground grading that would also allow them to move forward, and those are Street, Bridgwater, Clevedon and Brislington for those clubs have as far as I know the same ground grading that we have and would qualify for promotion if finishing in one of the positions they would accept teams from. Last Saturday here we had a very good win over one of the aforementioned teams who can take promotion beating Brislington 4-1 on a very warm bank holiday Saturday afternoon. With several players missing from various reasons one of them being that our ex-goalkeeper Tom Buckler was getting married that day and I believe three players were at that function and with holidaying Lloyd Gardner and Chris Wright (which somewhat gets up my nose when they have holidays in the season or what has happened before, go away for a stag weekend during the season, but they are not contracted to us so they can do what they like. I just wonder sometimes, if we get everything ready each home game they all went on holiday together for a fortnight and some injuries meant we were digging deep into resources to field a squad). You will have noticed no doubt a new tall ginger headed centre back playing on Saturday, well, that was Scott Beattie, who has signed for us from Bideford so Ellis rang the changes and once again at the end of the ninety minutes it

Homers Lines was another three points and our biggest win of the season, so well done to all the players in the permanent basis or not I am not sure. Despite some players not playing in their regular positions against Brislington we put in a good ninety minute performance. The opening exchanges were even but I always felt we were going to get the upper hand sooner or later and so it proved when striker Jared Lewington found the net with a good finish, not long after this good start we managed to spurn a golden opportunity to double the advantage and put the first nail in the visitors coffin when Nick Rudge somehow missed the target when it looked easier to score. Brislington fashioned a good chance for themselves not long after this but a fingertip save by Bucks keeper Kenny Griffiths pushed the ball over the bar. Just as I had gone into the clubhouse for half time beverages the visitors pulled level when a good effort from Niekeil Plummer found the target, and amazingly two minutes later we were in front again when Charlie Johansen was bundled over in the box and the ball was placed on the spot by Richard Groves, who smashed it home to give us the advantage just before the half-time whistle blew. The second half started evenly enough again, but saw us gradually get more on top and move into a 3-1 lead when Lewington grabbed his second of the game when a superb four-man passing move and great final ball from Charlie Johansen left him with a simple tap in from six yards out, to leave the visitors looking rather deflated. Not long after they were even more down in the mouth when Brislington's captain and centre back Jason Hughes was given a straight red card for hauling Lewington to the floor after he had skipped past his initial tackle, and being the last man had to pay the price. The icing was put on the cake when the fourth goal was slotted home by probably my man of the match Richard Groves to make all three points safe and give us our first win of the season by more than the solitary goal. The night before our Reserves and won the South Devon League Charity Shield played at

wottonprinters.co.uk

Devon HQ, Coach Road when both Simon Revell and Karl Green who were attending Tom Buckler's wedding on the Saturday made an appearance for the Second Team, and it was Revell with a double and Sam Dicken that saw us through 3-1 against a useful East Allington team. The only downside to this was the sending -off of Green for giving his opinions to the man in black. On Tuesday evening the First Team travelled to one of our more easier places to get to Street and it was nice to see at least fifteen Buckland supporters at the game. I must admit this is not one of my favourite places to go for one or two reasons which I will keep to myself. The game started off at a frantic pace and with the absentees from Saturday available for this fixture a couple of changes were made with Lloyd Gardner coming straight back in, and Nick Barker coming in at left full-back. Although Street made some good chances, it was us scored first in the eighth minute when good play out wide on the left by Richard Groves saw his cross into the six yard box neatly put away by the ever alert Charlie Johansen to give us the lead probably if I am honest against the run of play but who cares. In the 22nd minute, we doubled our advantage when the skilful Gardner spotted home keeper Tom Punchcard out on the edge of the penalty area and sent in the perfect lob from probably thirty yards out to leave the keeper stranded much to the delight the travelling faithful. But this joy was short lived as Street pulled a goal back within ninety seconds when David O'Hare slotted home from eight yards out. Then Street equalised in the 31st minute when one of the best strikers in the league Steve Murray thrashed the ball home from five yards out, seven minutes later he grabbed his brace when he equalled the quality of our goal by Gardner, when he took the ball up twenty-five yards out, and in one movement turned and rifled the ball past a static Kenny Griffiths, who had no chance. It stayed this way until the half-time whistle blew. It was always going to be difficult for the second half to live up to the pulsating first forty-five minutes that we had just seen, and so it proved. The

Homers Lines second half was littered with fouls and bookings but it was the home side who were looking more likely to score and put us under a lot of pressure, and indeed missed two or three golden opportunities to put the match beyond doubt, but failed to do so and paid the price when with six minutes to go Jared Lewington thrashed the ball home after a through ball down the middle and set him free, much to the wild delight of the travelling fifteen or so visiting spectators. Last night the Second Team travelled to an away fixture, their first of the current season when they played at Longcross against Dartmouth AFC, this game being moved forward to release our influential midfielder Dan Griffiths, who has been serving a one match ban after being sent off playing for Dartmouth at the end of last season, unfortunately for us and Dan he has missed seven fixtures for the First Team waiting for

Dartmouth to play their first league fixture and be free to play for us again. Also today our Third Team start their new term with a home fixture against Babbacombe Corinthians up at Forches Cross. Just a quick note here to anyone who would like to come along tomorrow our Ladies First Team start their season here in the women's FA Cup when they entertain Exeter City Ladies with a 2pm kick-off here at Homers Heath, I believe admission price will be £2. Not to be outdone the Ladies Second Team also start their fixtures tomorrow when they will be at Forches Cross when they entertain local side Shaldon Ladies in a league cup fixture also with a 2pm kick-off but I do believe that this one is free entry. Manager’s Say Hello all, Welcome to you all today for another home game and another tough game as we entertain Melksham here at Homers. Over the past few seasons this fixture has always been tough home or away and today will be no different. For those who went to Street on Tuesday night will know we didn't play our football at times, but what we did, was score crucial goals to maintain our unbeaten start to the season against a team

wottonprinters.co.uk

that will certainly be fighting at the top of the league come the end of the season. I said before the game I'd be happy to take a point but after our two goal lead I'd hoped we'd take all three but mistakes let them come back into it and as we pushed for an equaliser second half we did give chances away but finally we got our reward for our hard work and got our point. Support for games this season has been great and is much appreciated by myself and the players, hopefully we can all enjoy the game today and with the right attitude we can get the win. Enjoy the game, Ellis.

The Club reached the Wilts Senior Cup final three season's running, 1967/68 to 1969/70, the latter seeing a 2-0 win against Devizes with two penalties from Ron Low. In 1968/69 the club should have won the league but lost it in the last match, the season however was a notable one with Gareth Lewis scoring a club record 72 goals and the team reaching the first round proper of the FA Amateur Cup, only to lose at home in front of a 800 crowd to Harwich &Parkeston 3-2. In 1974 the club joined the Western League and results were poor for the first two seasons and in 1976 Melksham Town were relegated to the newly formed first division. Alan Skirton took over as Manager but promotion eluded the club although we won the Wilts Senior cup again in 1978 beating Avon Bradford 3-0. Pete Carter took charge in 1979 as player manager and guided the town to the First Division title, Pete remained in charge until 1982 taking the club to fifth place in his last season and winning the wilts shield in 1980/81 and 1981/82.

The club were founder members of the Wilts League in 1894, playing in that

In 1903/04 the club won the Wilts Senior Cup beating Swindon Hayden Street Workmen in the final. The club did not reach the final again until 1957/58 when they lost to Devizes Town after a 2nd replay. The same season saw the Conigre's record attendance of 2,821 in an FA cup match against Western League Trowbridge Town in which Melksham lost 6-0 after losing goalkeeper Mick Beaven with a finger injury. Mick later became a football league referee before his untimely death in 1978. In the early 60's, the club did not enjoy a great deal of success on or off the field, and in 1967 the club appointed ex-Bath player Ken Owens as player manager who brought a more professional attitude to the club.

Brian Ballinger took over briefly in 1982/83 followed by Mel Gingell in November 1983 and he guided the club to the league cup in 1985 and two further wilts shield triumphs. In 1986 new toilets, dressing rooms and floodlights were erected and first division Southampton visited

being founded in 1876 and finished in 10th position.

At the end of the 1987/88 season the town were relegated back to the first division ending an 8 season stay in the top flight. During the following season 1989/90 a change in management saw Alan McDougall taking over from Mel Gingell, Alan an ex - Stranraer, Mangotsfield and Trowbridge Town player was forced to resign after only a short spell owing to work commitments. Former Larkhall manager Dave King was quickly installed in November 1990 and the season ended with Town finishing a disappointing 16th position. A change in club policy owing to financial difficulties ended with Dave King's resignation in pre -season. Local man Nigel Brimble a former assistant manager to Mel Gingell was appointed but the club finished bottom of the league in the 1992/93 season and were relegated from the Great Mills league under the pyramid system. For the 1993/94 season Mel Gingell returned to the club as 1st team manager. If the 1992/93 was the lowest point in the clubs history, and then the 1993/94 was one of complete success as Town clinched the County Championship and the league double.

In the 2002/03 season the Town won the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the 4th time in their history by beating Trowbridge Town 2-1 at the Chippenham FC ground, the Wiltshire Senior Cup had previously been won in 1904-05, 1969-70, and in 1977-78 although they had made the final on three other occasions only to finish runners -up. At the end of the 2002/03 season with the Town finishing in 8th place Robbie Lardner decided to stand down as Manager and move on. In the 2003/04 pre-season, Nigel Tripp was appointed the new Player/Manager for the Town but towards the end of the season decided it was time to hang up his boots and concentrate on the management side of the season with Town finishing the season in 13th place. However in February of the 2004/05 season Nigel resigned from his position as Manager following the clubs heaviest defeat at the hands of Bideford.

Winning the championship together with all the necessary work off the field completed and promotion back to the Great Mills league after one year was a magnificent achievement. In 1995/96 Town finished 9th in the league and at the end of the season Darren Perrin was appointed Manager. What a season 1996/7 was to be as Town clinched the 1st Division title and in the process becoming the first ever winners under Screwfix Direct the new sponsors. On the way they had a 24 game unbeaten run in the league and clinched the title by one point at Yeovil in the last game. 1997/98 saw Town finished in 3rd position, their highest ever Western league placing on their return to the Premier Division. Robbie Lardner was appointed as Manager following Darren's departure and he guided the team to a very respectable finishing place of 9th in the Screwfix Premier league. Season 2001/02 saw the club celebrate its 125th year in football since

wottonprinters.co.uk

Lee Burns was immediately instated as caretaker Player /Manager until the end of the season at which time he decided to stand down and concentrate on his business in Bristol. The end of the 2004/05 season saw Town Finish 14th Place and also the end of the Screwfix Western League sponsorship. In the close season Kelvin Highmore former Manager of local rivals Calne joined the club to take over the reins as Manager and take Town into the 2005/06 Western League season under the umbrella of Toolstation the new sponsors of the Western League. The team had a mixed season of league results and finished in 14th place but had an excellent run in the Wiltshire Senior Cup. However they ended up as runners-up by losing to Corsham Town with the final going into extra time and penalties and although losing on an aggregate of 7-5 the team put up a first class performance. The Reserve team reached the final of the Corsham Print KO Cup losing out to Corsham Town Reserves 2-0, However The icing on the cake for the clubs season was the Youth teams 3-0 win over Malmesbury Victoria Youth to take the Wiltshire County FA Youth Cup.

Our Visitors Today - Melksham Town The 2006/07 season saw the first team start poorly but soon get back into gear and finished the season in 5th place, the highest they have been since finishing 3rd in the 1998/99 season. They also were runners -up in the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the second season running. The Youth team finished the season as Champions of the Wiltshire Floodlight League. Season 2007/08 saw Town finishing 11th in the league and they equalled their best ever run in the FA Vase (until the 2014-2015 season) reaching the third round proper losing 3-0 at home to the Holders Truro City. They ended the season on a high winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the 5th time defeating Laverstock and Ford 5-2. At the start of the new 2008/09 season Wayne Thorne took over as the new Town Manager when the club finished 10th.The 2009/10 season saw the club finish 19th and relegated to the First division. In the summer of 2010 a new committee for the club was formed to take over from |Mike Perrin and Dave Phillips who had been involved for many years in the club. The new committee of Dave Wiltshire, Ian Forester, Mark Jeffery, Andrew Butcher and Karen Forester took over the leadership of the club with a view to taking the club forward installing a strong belief in using the local young talent within the Town. New Manager Adam Young and his assistant Gary Newman were appointed prior to the start of the 2010/11 season and guided the team to a respectable 8th position in their first season in charge. In October 2011 Adam Young decided to step down as Manager due to work commitments and ex Town players Dave Clayton took over the manager's role with Justin Messenger as his assistant and they guided the club to runners up in the Toolstation Western League Division One in the 2011-2012 season to gain promotion back to the Premier Division for 20122013. The 2012-2013 season saw the Town defeat Downton 2-0 after extra time in the Wiltshire Senior Cup to capture the trophy for the sixth time in their history and end up a creditable 13th place in the first season back in the Western League Premier. In September 2013 Manager

wottonprinters.co.uk

Dave Clayton and assistant Justin Messenger left the club and Town appointed Darren Perrin for his second stint at the club after successful spells at Chippenham Town and Frome Town. The season 2013-2014 saw the Town finish in 7th place in league and retain the Wiltshire Senior Cup after a thrilling win on penalties after a 33 draw AET with Bradford Town. The 20142015 season culminated in the club winning the Toolstation Western League Premier Division for the first time in their history despite being one of just a few clubs not setting aside a budget and relying upon a team based on players from within the Town, a truly special achievement. In addition, the club progressed to the fourth round of the FA Vase for the first time in their history and manager Darren Perrin won the Manager of the Year award. The club were denied promotion as the current facility at The Conigre was deemed inadequate and the proposed new ground building was delayed due in part to “great crested newts”! The 2014- 2015 season was anticipated to be the last season the club would play at the Conigre ground but after unforeseen delays the Town were forced to again play the 2015-2016 season at The Conigre. The 2015-2016 season proved to be another very successful for the club. The club again finished in the top five of the league, reached the semi-finals of the Les Philips League Cup and won the Wiltshire Senior Cup for the third time in four years by beating much fancied Salisbury City 2 v 0 in front of a large crowd at Chippenham Town FC. Due to delays in provision of the new facility at Oakfield’s the club started the 2016-2017 season with a series of away fixtures before finally being forced to return to The Conigre for one last time!!The last game played at The Conigre was on Boxing Day 2016 with a 1-0 victory over near neighbours Bradford Town. Finally the club moved to their £7m facility (with Melksham RFC) which was funded by Wiltshire Council, Football Foundation and Premier League facilities at The Oakfield’s Melksham in January 2017. Although the opening day saw an FA Vase replay defeat to Bristol Manor Farm in front of just over 1,200 people the club are delighted to at last be in their new home and look forward to a promising

Our Visitors Today - Melksham Town future with the seniors, ladies and youth sides of the Town all sharing in the benefits the new facility brings to the Town. The 2016/2017 season saw the club finish in 3rd position in the Western Premier League and win the Les Phillips Cup for the first time in their history after a penalty shootout win over Cribbs FC after a 0-0 draw after extra time. The summer

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Melksham Town Today we give a very big warm Buckland welcome to Melksham Town, we welcome their management, players, club officials and of course their supporters that have travelled down to Devon this afternoon for this Toolstation Western League Premier fixture. We hope that you all enjoy your time here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities that we have to offer before making a safe journey home later Their new league campaign for the 2017-18 season started with a game at home against Cadbury Heath, and they ran out easy winners in this encounter 4-0, D Demkiv, G Higdon, W Maidment and L Ballinger all scoring, and a second win came on the 12th August away at Hallen 3-1, Higdon netting twice and Ballinger, and they made it three league wins when they defeated Odd Down (Bath) at home 3-0, their prolific striker Higdon netting a hat-trick and his sixth league goal in three games. However, they dropped their first points this season when they were held to a 2-2 draw away at Chipping Sodbury Town, Higdon and B Thomson scoring, then last Saturday they were beaten for the first time, at home rather surprisingly 2-1 by Shepton Mallet. They were also in action on the 29th August away at the leagues bottom club Longwell Green Sports, and in twelve Premier meetings they have picked up twenty-five points, and away they have won three, drawn one, lost two, scoring fifteen , conceding eight, collecting ten points and they must

wottonprinters.co.uk

keep this record going. This game ended in a very easy 6-0 win, L Ballinger and G Higdon with two each, D Demkiv and M Perrott scoring. So at the time of writing this piece they are up in second place in the Premier Division table having collected thirteen points from their opening six games. Looking back to last season they had thirteen points from their opening five, which were all away from home, and after drawing their opening game they won the next four on their travels. Already in their three home games they have attracted 1029 spectators to their fabulous ground which is the Oakfield Stadium, Eastern Way, and that is a attendance average of 343 per game, the highest of those three was 354 in their first league game there against Cadbury Heath, the lowest was 323 which Shepton Mallet defeated them there on the 26th August. Last season they attracted 6100 spectators to their nineteen home games, some of which were played at their old ground The Conigre, with their highest attendance being 515 when they entertained Cadbury Heath at their new ground, the lowest crowd they had was 83 at the Conigre when they entertained Bitton on the 10th December. They actually started their new season in the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round away at Horndean from the Wessex League Premier (Step Five), but went out beaten 2-1 on the day.

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Melksham Town So next up in this league campaign will be at home against Bitton, now since the 1998-99 season they have played them twenty-two times in the Premier Division and have collected twentyseven points from those, at home they have won five, drawn two, lost four, scoring eighteen, conceding fourteen, gaining seventeen points, and in last season’s corresponding game it ended in a 2 -0 win which was played at their old ground The Conigre. They then have a very tough fixture at home against last season’s runners-up Street, and in eighteen Premier Division meetings since the 98-99 season they have picked up twentyseven points, at home they have won five, drawn one, lost three, scoring twenty-two, conceding fifteen, gaining sixteen points, in last season’s meeting there they were beaten 3-2 in front of a crowd of 495,their last win coming in the 2014-15 season, 6-4. This is currently their third spell in the Western League Premier Division, the first started in the 1980-81 season and it lasted for eight seasons, with their highest placing being 5th in the 198182 season, in their first season they finished in 13th place. In this time they played 320 games, winning 92, drawing 99, losing 129, scoring 386, conceding 510, gaining 243 points, interestingly they drew more games than they won in this spell, in the final season, 1987-88 they finished in 21st place and were relegated back into Division One. The second stint began in the 1997-98 season and lasted for thirteen seasons, and they finished in 3rd place (their highest ever finish in this division) in that comeback season, and it was their highest placing in this spell. They played 492 games, winning 191, drawing 114, losing 187, scoring 741, conceding 736, gaining 687 points, and in their final season, 2009-10, they finished in 19th place and were once again relegated into Division One. The current spell they are on started in the 201213 season, and this will be their sixth season in the Premier, obviously the highest they have finished was first place in the 2014-15 season, and to date they have played 196 games in this

wottonprinters.co.uk

spell, winning 109, drawing 33, losing 54, scoring 414, conceding 268, gaining 360 points. So in all three spells in this Division they have now played 1008 games, winning 391, drawing 217, losing 370, scoring 1539, conceding 1515, gaining 1288 points, which means they have won 40% of those games, drawn 23%, losing 37%, scoring 1.52 goals per game, conceding 1.5 goals per game, collecting 1.27 points per game. But since the 1998-99 season they have played 639 games, at home they have played 325 games and have won 151, drawing 62, losing 112, scoring 585, conceding 472, gaining 515 points, so at home they have won 46% of those games, drawing 19%, losing 35%, scoring 1.8 goals per game, have conceded 1.45 goals per game, gaining 1.58 points per game. They have played 325 away games, winning 127, drawing 78, losing 120, scoring 495, conceding 495, gaining 459 points, which means they have won 39% of those games, drawn 24%, lost 37%, scoring 1.5 goals per game, conceded 1.53 goals per game, and gaining 1.40 points per game. their 4-0 win over Welton Rovers. Isaac Reid and Glen Hayer scored in the space of nine second half minutes to help Clevedon Town to a 2-1 victory against Wincanton Town, while Aaron Anglin, Jack Mills and Tom Collett were the difference between the sides as Hallen saw off Radstock Town with an entertaining 3-2 win. Premier Division: At Homers Heath, Buckland Athletic maintained their winning start to the league season following a 4-1 victory over Brislington. After falling behind in the sixth minute lead following a Jared Lewington header, Brislington got back on level terms in the moments leading up to half-time. However they were soon behind, with Richard Groves firing home a penalty less than two minutes later. The second half belonged to Buckland, with Groves and Lewington both adding to their tallies either side of a red card to Brislington’s Jason Hughes. Shepton Mallet produced an excellent late comeback to defeat Melksham Town 21. New signing Tyler Sibbick put Melksham ahead ten minutes from time on his debut, before the visitors turned the game on its head. The equaliser came five minutes from through Craig Loxton, and then just two minutes later they stole all three points with Cameron Sanford firing an effort through a crowd of players. Odd Down were another side to claim an away victory, with Asa White scoring either side of the break in their 2-1 triumph over Street, while Cribbs defeated Wellington 1-0 thanks to a strike from Charlie Aldom despite playing with ten men for an hour. Bridgwater Town claimed their second win of the season after beating Wells City 3-0 at the Athletic Ground. Another side to win 3-0 away from home were Willand Rovers, after James Blake scored a pair of headers in their victory over Chipping Sodbury Town. Westbury United scored the biggest league win of the day, recording a 6-0 victory over Portishead Town. Mark Robinson got on the scoresheet twice, adding to

wottonprinters.co.uk

goals from Jamie Jordan, Martin Johnson, Josh Ferguson and an own goal. Sherborne Town captured their first win of the season, with substitute Dave Smith scoring a late winner in their 1-0 victory over Corsham Town. Sin-Bin trial In various parts of the footballing world the ten minute sin-bin is being trialled by the authorities in a latest attempt to curb arguably the biggest cancer of all, namely dissent and foul language which is blighting the sport at all levels causing a significant drop out of officials and driving away many supporters. One of the Western League’s neighbours, the Devon and Exeter League are one who have embraced it and Press Officer Kerry Miller took the opportunity of taking in one of their games on Friday night to check out how it might work and the reaction of some of the spectators. The Premier Division clash had Western League connections as the visitors were Heavitree United who travelled to Feniton for a 6.30pm kick-off. The Heavies left the league 18 years ago and have reformed a couple of times since then, while wearing the Feniton number five shirt was none other than Phil Everett, who scored the last of his 378 goals for ex-Western League Tiverton Town around 15 years ago. Now playing at full back, Phil is careering at pace towards his 50th year but is more or less unchanged from Tivvy’s glory days of championships and FA Vase wins. Ironically, although the language coming from the Heavitree dug out was frankly obscene, the full on 2-2 draw was played out without the man in the middle having to speak to a single player, as the on field behaviour and respect for the opposition was impressive. Several times the away captain shouted the words ‘quiet’ or ‘behave’ as if to remind his teammates that they could not afford to have them on the touchline for ten minutes. A home official said after the game: “So far so good as there was very little moaning going on and the referee spelled it out to us before the game that he now has that option.” There will be other opportunities to watch football in that league but for now the jury is out on the law change and all will hope that it is a success and the powers that be have the strength to see it through.

Down Memory Lane Hello to you all and welcome to another journey back in time into the distant past with me when I look at an old programme from years gone by. Today sees me looking at a programme I recently bought in a job lot on e-bay to add to my own collection and give me a more varied selection to choose from although, I started this column using only programmes from matches I had seen myself but have now changed the format.

Today sees me looking at a very strange little programme from Swindon Town played on Tuesday December the 28th 1965 against Grimsby Town. This programme is one of the smallest I have ever seen in area size as it is only 6" x 4" and contains 36 pages including both front and back covers. The front cover is a bit of a disappointment as it only carries the Swindon club crest and tells us Swindon Town Football Club and that the cost of this mini edition is sixpence (6d) no other information on the front cover not even who today's visitors are. Page 2 is a full page advert for Mills and Merrick Ltd who are House Furnishers from Bridge Street Swindon. Page 3 contains the match details and tells us

wottonprinters.co.uk

the kick-off for this fixture is 7.30pm, it also tells us the names of the three officials. Page 4 has six adverts on it with the two largest being for W Collins Swindon Ltd-turf accountants and Notton's CafĂŠ-which is just 200 yards from the ground. Page 5 lists the club officials in the top third for example president, chairman, secretary directors and others, with the bottom two thirds called ‘Club Notes’ written by the current manager Danny Williams these club notes carry on for the next two pages where he talks about various things including the last game played and tells us that this is the only home fixture over the Christmas period. Page 8 has another six adverts on it with the two biggest being for Wilsons Swindon Ltd-builders and the second for Marshgate Garage Ltd. Page 9 is also devoted to just adverts with this time just three on the page, the biggest being for the Bristol Omnibus Company Ltd with Swindon Sports Centre and Dobell and Sherman-office equipment sales. Pages 10 and 11 are devoted to pen pictures of our visitors today Grimsby Town where it lists fourteen of their players. Page 12 again is adverts GH Flower and Son-scrap metal merchants, the Kingsdown Arms pub and the Swindon Bacon Company. Page 13 has a full page advert for HR Spackman-who deal in garden sheds. Page 14 is once again I am afraid is more adverts, just to two this time the top half taken up by WJ Castle Bakers-who specialise in wedding cakes and the bottom half for Ballard and Co-chemists. Page 15 has a warning about running onto the field of play at any time during the game or after the final whistle whether you are sad, mad or glad, it says. Page 16 lists the fixtures for the Reserve Team who play in the Football Combination and has the results of the games played so far entered. Page 17 is a full page advert for plant hire and earthmoving contractors-H Hibhard Limited of Swindon. Pages 18 and 19 are taken up with the two teams written in the old-fashioned way of goalkeeper, fullbacks/, half backs, forwards with eight small adverts all around the outside. Pages 20 and 21 are supporters club notes and lists up-andcoming events in the supporters club and the

Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our runners-up in the league, we also picked up the Sportsmanship Cup and Programme Award. 2001-2002 was great season for the club as the

wottonprinters.co.uk

Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards. 2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th. In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues. The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division. We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award. The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts. Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

wottonprinters.co.uk

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years. The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2. The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides. The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1 st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one. Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

clubwebsite.co.uk/bucklandathleticfc01

westwardgroup.co.uk

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign. The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds. For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons. What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football. Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

wottonprinters.co.uk

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them. Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football. 2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls. We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be

Buckland Athletic - A Club History & Honours led by Lee Chapman with the 3rd Team having Nigel Holmes in charge. The Ladies1st and 2nd Teams keep their management structure for this coming season, with the 1st Team now in the SWWL Premier Division and the 2nd Team in Devon Women's League Premier Division. There will also be more junior sides added in both boys and girls teams,. The club continues to grow, and with everyone pulling in the right direction, which includes our fantastic loyal sponsors, and supporters he sky is the limit to what we can achieve. The club continues to thrive both on and off the field of the play and this is due to the hard working ethics of all the volunteers within the club.
