Homers Lines Hello everybody and welcome along to Homers Heath for this afternoon's scheduled Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture between ourselves and Odd Down from the Bath area of Bristol. Obviously if you're reading this, we have finally got a home league game to watch here at Homers Heath since the last one played by the First Team back on the 16 th December, when the visitors here were Chipping Sodbury, a game we managed to win by the odd goal in three, with our goal scorers on the day, being Lloyd Gardner and Jared Lewington. Well things have definitely moved on since then we now have a new First Team interim manager in one of Homers Heaths favourite managers over the years Adam Castle. Also Jared Lewington has moved to pastures new by moving up to the Southern League Premier Division side Tiverton Town, young Charlie Johansen has also moved in choosing a slightly sideways move to Plymouth Parkway also Ben Carter's loan period with us has now ended and he has moved on to I believe Bideford. Also a few new faces have been added to the squad since the last game here against Chipping Sodbury, Ryan Bush from Teignmouth, Kai Fisher from Wellington, and Bideford, Connor Clifford and Craig Duff both again I believe from Bideford and the latest person to put pen to paper is Chris McPhee, who has moved here from Bodmin Town. At this stage in my Homers Lines today I would like to give a big warm Buckland style welcome to the players, management team, club officials and of course any spectators that have made the journey today down to Devon to cheer their lads on, we all hope you enjoy your short stay with us today and will join us in the clubhouse after the final whistle to enjoy a bite to eat and a pint before making a safe journey homewards. We are due to make the return journey up to Odd Down on Saturday 7th April when hopefully by then the weather will be back to nice sunny afternoons. Despite not playing at home since the 16th December we have managed away games at Melksham Town where we lost 3-0, a score that really flattered

wottonprinters.co.uk

the home team because there was no more than one goal difference between the two teams, and yes I do think that they probably did shave the afternoon, but we certainly had chances of our own and made it an uncomfortable afternoon at times for the hosts. Once again, I must mention that this setup is by far head and shoulders above anything else in the Western League and if you do get a chance to visit it will be really worthwhile doing so, there were at least nine people in our group of twelve that have not been to Melksham's new ground and all were really well impressed. Last weekend saw Melksham reach the same stage in the FA Vase, as we did last season getting into the last eight of the competition when they beat Tring Athletic by the odd goal in three. What was rather impressive about this game was it was watched by 1236 spectators, which must have made a fair few pounds for both clubs, and of course Melksham will add the prize money of ÂŁ2,250 to their payday. We ourselves finally got back into action after an enforced lay-off due to wet weather conditions, when we travelled to Clevedon Towns ground, The Active Stadium with all the five recent signings in the squad. Thanks to good work by the home clubs grounds men in the morning the pitch although heavy in places looked in reasonable nick. Looking at the programme before the start of the game I noticed that Captain of Clevedon Town these days is ex-Bristol City player Clayton Fortune. Both sides tried to play passing football in the heavy conditions, with the first chance on goal falling to the hosts when Alex Russell had a good effort saved by our keeper Kenny Griffiths. With the contest being even affair it was much to the delight of the travelling dozen or so spectators that we took the lead in the 14th minute when good work down the left by Danny Griffiths saw him lay the ball infield to one of the new lads Craig Duff, who thrashed it goal-wards from twenty-five yards out and saw his effort beat the home custodian Damien Freeman as it crashed into the back of the net courtesy of a slight touch on the far side upright. Despite much huffing and puffing and effort by both teams there was no further addition to the score line when the referee blew the whistle for the half-time interval. The second half started in the same vein with both teams probing for openings, and in the 51st minute

bucklandathletic.com

westwardgroup.co.uk

Homers Lines home keeper Freeman kept his side in it when he saved well from Nick Rudge, who had burst his way through into the penalty area. Fourteen minutes later the aforementioned Bristol City player Fortune should have squared things up when somehow he missed a golden opportunity, which people would have bet on him scoring, but is effort went well wide. Both sides made chances before the final whistle with the best effort from Clevedon coming from a shot by impressive midfielder Lucas Vowles, which was well saved by Griffiths. With the introduction of all three substitutes Ryan Bush, Chris McPhee and Josh Webber, we were looking to consolidate the victory and perhaps get a second goal to rubberstamp the three points, and indeed a very good chance was fashioned by Bush himself only to be thwarted by the home goalkeeper who pulled off a good save with his legs. The final whistle sounded and we travelled back to Devon after a couple of pints in fine spirits. Strange thing about this result was despite winning we moved down one place in the league table as Bridgwater Town beat Cadbury Heath 4-1, and now have a better goal difference than us, although we are both on the same points. After today's league fixture against Odd Down our next game weather permitting will be in the Les Phillips Cup competition when we travel to pastures new when we meet Warminster Town at their Weymouth Street ground. I'm afraid it was bad news again for both our Second Team who were due to play away in a cup game at Kingskerswell, this being called off on Friday afternoon by the local council, the Third Team fared a little better lasting until 11.30am on Saturday morning before hearing from Harbertonford their game also was postponed. The Ladies First Team fixture at Homers Heath in the South West Women's League against Downend Flyers also fell foul of the blanket call off of football at all levels adult and Junior at Homers Heath last weekend, when once again the pitch was like a sponge full of water. Some hasty telephone calls saw this fixture switched to the Ashburton allweather pitch, and all the effort was made worthwhile with a nice healthy victory 8-0 over a Downend Flyers. The goals on the afternoon came from a hat-trick from Laura Gough, a brace from Kirsty Caunter, with one each from Amber Coates,

wottonprinters.co.uk

Katie Hine and skipper Hayley Chamberlain. This win moves our girls to top the table in the South West Women's Football League Premier Division with twenty-four points from eight games and a plus goal difference of forty-two, in second spot also on twenty-four points are Torquay United Ladies whose goal difference is plus twenty-eight, Marine Academy Plymouth are sat in third position on eighteen points from their six games played. So we could well be in for a tight finish, although if the weather keeps on like it has been, when that will be is anyone's guess. The wet weather has been causing havoc not only at our club but all other clubs in Devon and Cornwall, for us personally the three men's adult teams and the two ladies adult teams are really well behind with their fixtures, but then again so are all the other clubs in the corresponding leagues, probably the worst affected adult team is our Ladies Reserve Team who have only played one league game so far this season, owing to being in a couple of cup competitions and doing well in both. So let's hope that you reading these Homers Lines today both the Seconds and Thirds will also be playing, the Second Team due to be away at Kingskerswell in a twice postponed cup fixture, the Third Team fixture this weekend is to play cross-town rivals Newton Abbot 66 down at Osborne Park, the Ladies First Team are due to play away tomorrow at AEK Bocco, which is in the Hanham area of Bristol. Just a quick note here that our Ladies First Team have arranged two fixtures under the floodlights here at Homers Heath to try and ease the congestion on the backlog of games. The first game here will be on Wednesday 28th February with a 7.30pm kick-off against Marine Academy of Plymouth. The second game will be on Wednesday 21st March, when the visitors will be local rivals Torquay United also win a 7.30pm kick off. So if you can get along to cheer the girls on, that will be great, the usual entrance fee for ladies football will apply. So let's hope these are not postponed due to bad weather conditions when the time arrives. So let's hope these are not postponed due to bad weather conditions when the time arrives. Our Second Team Ladies are also due to play for the .

Homers Lines first time in ages when they travel to Exeter to face Exeter University with a 2pm kick-off at their Topsham Road ground not far to go if anyone fancies a Sunday ladies fixture, as I mentioned earlier the First-Team Ladies are up in Bristol, a bit too far for most people to go. Well that's about it for this time I really hope you get

to read this as both Paul and I are getting a little tired of spending a fair amount of time on producing programmes that are printed and yet, they never see the light of day, not only is it disappointing but also it carries a financial loss to the club.

Cheers for now, Roy Homer Holmes - Club Chairman

JP’s Commercial Columns Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to this afternoons Toolstation Western Premier league fixture against Odd Down (Bath). I would like to welcome the officials, players and supporters from Odd Down and hope that you can join us in the clubhouse after the game and have a safe journey home. It seems like an age since we last had a game here at Homers Heath, in fact it was actually 8 weeks ago, on the 16th December when we last played at home when we entertained Chipping Sodbury. After that the rains came and we lost game after game, home and away, to the inclement weather. In fact during those 8 weeks we only managed to play two games, a defeat at Melksham Town on the 13th January and last Saturday when we recorded a well -deserved narrow victory at Clevedon Town. So we are all hoping that things improve because there are still seventeen league fixtures to be fulfilled and we are still in the Les Phillips Cup, so there are going to be quite a few two games per week between now and the end of the season. We do not have a game sponsor this afternoon, but we do have a match ball sponsor. Martin Dare, Neil Luscombe, Neil Scoins, Brian Staples, Gary Adderley, Andy Lloyd and Marcus Davies are a group of ex local footballers who have played together and against each other at varying levels since the early 80's. They try to get together at least once a year to help support a local club, and to also take time to remember two very good friends, Kevin Adderley

wottonprinters.co.uk

and Mark Batten who sadly passed away far too young and who would otherwise he here this afternoon enjoying a few ciders with their friends. Thank you guys for your match ball sponsorship this afternoon, I hope that you enjoy your visit to Homers Heath and look hopefully look forward to seeing you all again one day, enjoy your afternoon. This afternoon also sees the debut of our very own Match day Mascot, Barry the Buck...!! The brainchild of our good friend and Buckland supporter Jamie Sinclair Barry and his little sidekick will be at all of our home fixtures from now on, and also organising a half time penalty shoot-out competition. Am not sure but think we may be the only team in the Toolstation league with a club mascot, but am pretty sure if we are not then no doubt someone will let us know. Going forward 'Barry' will be visiting local schools to promote the club and also attend some of the clubs ladies and junior games and club functions. Thanks should also go to Jonathan Collura and Rob Stanley who have made this possible by funding Barry's Deer suit, thank you guys, it is most appreciated. So that's about it for this week's report folks, if you would like to sponsor or become involved with one of the West country's most ambitious clubs then please contact me on 07836 774048 or email jpbafc@hotmail.com Enjoy your afternoon folks, and let's hope the boys can pick up the three valuable points, COME ON YOU BUCKS...!! However, it was to be season 1991-92 before the Club won its first major honour, lifting the Somerset FA Senior Cup, and even more joy was to come the following season as the Club won promotion to the Great Mills Western League Premier Division, finishing as the 1992-93 Division One Champions. In their centenary year of 2001 Odd Down reached the final of the Somerset FA Premier Cup for the first time, losing 1-0 to Southern League side Clevedon Town. The feat was repeated in 2004, this time going down 5-0 to Yeovil Town at the Clubs Huish Park home. The same season the Club were awarded the Western League's Vice President's Trophy, for the team with the best sportsmanship record. During the last decade Odd Down has seen great change both on and off the field. The club entered the new century with three main officials off the pitch. The 'Odd Down Triangle' of Mike 'Tini' Mancini, Eric Clarke and Michael Russell. Unfortunately 'Tini' passed away a couple of games into the 200607 season, shortly after being awarded the great honour of being made a life member of the Toolstation Western league.

Fred Weaver and brothers Walt & Stan Noad. Odd Down, then a self-contained village on the outskirts of Bath in Somerset, played in the Bath & District Football League in its formative years.

Tini's sad passing caused great problems off the pitch, which were only compounded when the greatly respected General Secretary of the main Odd Down Club, Steve Keen, also passed away during the season.

During the 1920's the Club found itself playing in the Wiltshire Football League and prior to World War II had graduated to playing in the Somerset Senior Football League. Re-grouping after the war, Odd Down started off again in the Somerset Senior League and in the 1946-47 season finished as runners-up to Somerton. They also won the MidSomerset League that season, a league formed to make up for the shortage of Somerset Senior League fixtures at that time.

On the field of play the club has gone through lots of change in terms of management and playing personnel. In the 2007/08 season after a period of instability in terms of management and leadership Odd Down found themselves relegated to the first division. However, in the 2009/10 season Chairman Dave Loxton, Treasurer Paul Gover and the New Football Committee appointed Lee Burns as Manager. Lee had previously played over 300 games for the club and is well known in the Western League circuit after playing over 28 seasons. He immediately appointed Odd Down legend Mark Keen as his Assistant and Alan Moxham as Director of Football.

From 1967 to 1972 the Club formed a steering committee which worked hard to provide a social Club, eventually opening one on 5th April 1972. The hard work paid off as Odd Down gained admittance to the Western Football League for the start of the 1977-78 season.

Lee, Mark and Alan worked extremely hard to turn the fortunes of the club around. They created a new exciting squad, with a blend of youth and experience. In deed their hard work paid off handsomely as the new look team produced some outstanding results and finished runners up in the Toolstation

Our Visitors Today - Odd Down (Bath) League First Division gaining promotion back to the Premier League. Dave Loxton and his team worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure the work was completed in time. The club has definitely got the feel good factor with exciting times ahead. In the early part of 2012-2013 season, work commitments led to Lee Burns stepping down as manager, however his then assistant manager Terry Moore took up the reign and in 2013 – 2014 season with Ray Johnston as his assistant steered Odd Down FC to fourth place in the Premier League. 2014-2015 season saw the resignation of Terry Moore, but Ray Johnston was ready to step up to the challenge and appointed Lee Rendell as his assistant. Ray and Lee proved to be a winning partnership and in their first season in management roles achieved 5th spot in Toolstation Western League Premier Division. 2015 – 2016 has seen Ray retain all but one member of last season’s squad, and with a successful preseason campaign behind them the coming season looks promising for Ray, Lee and their squad.

What a season 2015 -2016 turned out to be for the club, Over the closed season a mixture of 1 st Team, Reserve Team and U18s players secured the title in the Fry Club Tournament which gave them a good preseason workout and set the scene for the coming season culminating in Odd Down being crowned the Western League Champions for the first time in the club’s history, 2016 – 2017 With Ray Johnston and Lee Rendall still at the helm, it wasn’t such a good season however the 1st team and reserves both finished 7 th in their respective leagues, with the U18s taking runners up spot for the second successive season. The crowning of Odd Down Reserves as Somerset FA Senior Cup Champions was to a terrific end to the season. 2017-2018 The team of Ray and Lee continue with the first team again for this season, Jason Maggs has a new side kick in Richard Griffith well known around the local football scene, and Stewart Bradley & Shaun Wiles- Richards have taken over the reins for the U18s team.

Bucks Ed’s Look at Odd Down (Bath) This new league campaign began on the 8th August against Wells City, and it started with a very good 30 win, A White getting two and J Sage scoring, and it was a 2-2 away draw at Willand Rovers, Kye Simpson getting both of those goals. They fell to a first defeat in their third game away at Melksham Town, losing this one 3-0, but they were back to winning ways when they defeated Hengrove Athletic at home 1-0, White scoring, with another impressive win coming when they defeated Street away 2-1, White getting both of those goals, and a third consecutive win came when they defeated Brislington at home 1-0, Kane Simpson scoring. Their first league game in September, on the 9th, they drew 11 away at Bradford Town, Kye Simpson scoring, but that draw was followed by two defeats, both at home against firstly Shepton Mallet 2-1, White, and 2-1 against early season strugglers Hallen, Kane Simpson on target. They drew 0-0 away at Cadbury Heath, and then in their first game in October they drew 2-2 at home with Bitton, Kane Simpson and White, and they won 2-0 away at Chipping Sodbury Town, A McGrane and M Tippens scoring. They were beaten in their last game in this month at home by Bridgwater Town 1-0, but they then defeated Wellington at home 2-0, J Dunn and White scoring in this first game in November. Their first game in 2018, on the 13th January ended in a 3-1 home defeat against Chipping Sodbury Town, Kye Simpson once again on target. Last Saturday the 3rd February they were beaten for the ninth time in this league campaign away by Hallen 2-0. They were also in action on Tuesday evening at home against title challengers and second placed Willand Rovers, and this game ended in a very good 2-2 draw. At this present time they are in fourteenth place in the Western League Premier Division table, having played twenty-two games and picking up twentyseven points from those games. Their best overall

wottonprinters.co.uk

form this season in this league campaign was an unbeaten run of four games, which included in three consecutive wins, the worst was no win in five games, although they did draw three of those games. Then came their great achievement when in the 2015-16 season they were crowned champions for the very first time, then in the 2016-17 season, they finished in seventh place. In this spell they have played 282 games, winning 139, drawing 60, losing 82, scoring 571, conceding 396, and gaining 482 points, so they have won 49% of their games, drawing 21%, losing 30%, scoring 2.02 goals per game, conceding 1.4, netting 1.71 points per game.

So we have met ten times in the Premier Division

Bucks Ed’s Say Hello and a very good afternoon to everyone attending this Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture against Odd Down (Bath). We also hope that you enjoy your time here at Homers Heath, and make use of the facilities we have to offer and later on have a safe journey home. Well the 1st Team has seen a few changes over the Christmas period, firstly, we have welcomed back a true Yellow in interim manager Adam Castle. This is

wottonprinters.co.uk

a huge commitment from a man who truly has yellow blood in his veins, travelling over from his new home in Ireland to see us over this time of change. He has been working his magic already, having to contend with the loss firstly of the very talented and top scorer Jared Lewington, who has made the move of two divisions higher by joining Southern League Premier Division high flyers Tiverton Town, this was Jared fourth season with the club and he had made an impressive 125 league and cup

westwardgroup.co.uk

Bucks Ed’s Say appearances and has scored 77 goals, we wish Jared the best of luck with his club, and the step up, we know he is a very talented footballer and we wish him every success. We have also lost another very talented young player, Charlie Johansen has chosen to move on, and he made 93 league and cup appearances scoring 24 goals, again we which Charlie every success at his new club. But Adam has been very busy in the run up to Christmas, and has announced three major signings, with maybe a one more to come, his first signing is Kai Fisher a very talented centre-half who has spent most of his playing career playing Southern League football we signed home from South & West Division Barnstaple Town, and he brings a wealth experience at that higher level. Adam said “Kai has had a number of clubs recently and I’m hoping he will feel at home with us and settle in and become a mainstay of the side, he has a lot of ability that’s confirmed by recent spells at Bideford AFC and Barnstaple Town, both Southern League clubs”. We welcome Kai into the Buckland family and hope he settles in well with our great club. A second signing has been made, and it’s another defender, a left sided one Connor Clifford, and he has also joined from Southern League Barnstaple Town. Adam said about this great signing, ‘Bringing Connor in at this crucial time of the season means we now have competition for places in every position in the team. Square pegs in square holes is what I’m looking for with this squad, I don’t think that was possible with the squad I inherited so another natural leftie was always on my wish list. Connor is another that’s moved around a bit recently but the majority of that movement has been at higher league clubs than ourselves so not only does he bring a huge amount of ability with him he also brings a wealth of experience for someone so young’. Again we welcome Connor into the Buckland family and again hope he settles in really quickly to help get the season back on track. Our third signing is Ryan Bush from South West Peninsula League Division One East side Teignmouth. Adam said “When I first took back over from Ellis I was informed from the outset that it was likely Jared Lewington would be moving to Tiverton Town in the Southern league, so Ryan was an obvious replacement in my opinion. I had a look at him

wottonprinters.co.uk

3 years ago and just thought he was a little light weight at that point but he’s 6ft 2” now and filled out so that along with his rapid pace and eye for goal it’s a complete no brainer as far as i am concerned. We have a history in recent years of signing players (Jordan Havlin, Jared Lewington, Charlie Johansen) from lower league clubs and developing them into better players for the good of the club and also the player. I see Ryan being a huge hit in the team and having no problem adjusting to the step up to the Premier division of the Toolstation Western league. I must thank Teignmouth AFC for their professional approach to the transfer. Right from the outset they wanted what was best for Ryan and I think that’s extremely refreshing in this modern era of football, thank you Teignmouth. A third Buckland welcome to Ryan. There have been a further two signings, Craig Duff has joined the club on dual registration with Bideford, and he scored the winner at Clevedon on Saturday, and this is a second spell at the club he has now made five appearances scoring four goals. Also Chris McPhee has joined us from Bodmin Town. So we welcome both players to the club. Interim Manager’s Notes Hi Everyone and welcome to this afternoon's league game versus Odd Down FC, I hope you enjoy your afternoon at Homers Heath and have a a safe journey home later. After a very frustrating spell of wet weather our season got back underway last Saturday with a hard fought win up the M5 at Clevedon Town. A single goal is all that separated the sides at the end of ninety minutes, but as 1-0 matches go is was a good one with both sides playing football and looking to open up each other. Defensively we were outstanding and the clean sheet was much deserved. At Clevedon we included two new signings in Craig Duff and Chris McPhee, Craig has played for us

wottonprinters.co.uk

before on "Loan" but he has now made us his first choice club, which is great news for us and he marked his "Debut" with the winning goal last week. The 2nd signing is the vastly experienced Chris McPhee who has joined us from Cornish giants Bodmin Town, Chris will bring some much needed experience to what is a young squad, last week we introduced Chris for the final twenty-five minutes to help us see out the game and you can tell that not much will ruffle him. We now have a squad of eighteen which is crucial we maintain over these next few months, it’s no surprise our defeat at Melksham came when we could only name three substitutes. Richard Groves misses out today as he's on holiday, other than that all the lads are good to go! Cheers, Adam.

In eleven Premier meetings they picked up eight points. League Placing: 20th Last six league games: LLWDWL MELKSHAM TOWN….have now equalled our run in last season’s FA Vase, as on Saturday they won their Fifth Round game at home against Tring 2-1, in front of a great crowd at Oaklands Park of 1236, with their goals coming from Robert Hobbs and Michael Perrott, Tring play their football in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division (Step Five), and they were towards the bottom end of that league, in seventeenth place, but we all know that cup football makes all teams equal. In Mondays draw they will be at home again, this time they will take on Thatcham Town who play their football in the Hellenic Premier Division (Step Five), and they are in second place in that division having played twenty-eight games and collecting seventy points, so this will be a massive test to our Western League friends, and Thatcham Town defeated our victors in our quarter-final tie last season Bromsgrove Sporting 2-1, although there was reported there was a little crowd trouble at their tie last Saturday. The Quarter-Finals will take place on the 24th February and we send all our good luck

STREET….game at home against Bitton was lost once again to this lousy weather, before that the league leaders won 2-0 at home against Hallen, won 3-2 away at Bridgwater Town, won 3-1 away at Longwell Green Sports, won 1-0 at home against Hengrove Athletic and won 3-0 away at Chipping Sodbury Town. They remain out in front and in first place in the Premier Division table having played twenty-three games and collecting fifty-nine points, and are unbeaten in their last nineteen games, and they have won their last fifteen games, which really is champions form and look odds on for promotion this season as a top two finish seems guaranteed. At home they have won eight, drawn one, lost one, scoring twenty-three, conceding six, gaining twenty-five points, whilst away they have won eleven, drawn one, lost one, scoring thirty-six, conceding twelve, gaining thirty-four points. WELLS CITY….last played on the 13th January when they were beaten at home by Cribbs 2-1, before that they were thrashed away at title challengers Willand Rovers 7-1, they did pick up a point with a 2-2 draw away at Wellington, were thrashed again away at Hengrove Athletic and again it was 7-1, lost 3-0 at home to our visitors today, Odd Down (Bath) and lost 2-1 away at Clevedon Town. This all means that they have now dropped down to nineteenth place in the Premier Division table having played twenty-three games and picking up twelve points, which sees them just three points above bottom side Longwell Green Sports. At home they have won two, drawn two, lost seven, scoring ten, conceding fifty-one, gaining eight points, whilst away they have won one, drawn one, lost ten, scoring eleven, conceding forty-two, gaining just four points on their travels, and probably with two being relegated this season, they are in dire trouble and face being back in Division One next season. Today they are away at Bridgwater Town, and they were beaten by them at home on the 26th August 3-0. Then comes a Les Phillips Cup 2nd Round tie at home against Cribbs. At home they have won five, drawn two, lost four, scoring fourteen, conceding fifteen, gaining seventeen points, whilst away they have won two, drawn one, lost nine, scoring fifteen, conceding thirty-six, gaining seven points, and this really is a poor away record this season. First Division: Roman Glass St George overturned a half-time deficit to defeat Calne Town 5-2, keeping up the pressure on the top two. After Jordan Yeo had given them the perfect start, Roman Glass found themselves behind at the break following a quick-fire double from Stuart Windsor. The home side regrouped during the interval and after Ryan Radford had struck the equaliser, substitute Ken Oni fired them back into the lead. Alex Lewis was then dismissed to hurt Calne’s chances of getting back into the game, with Lewis Wentland and Jacob Watson each scoring late on to complete the victory. At Hardenhuish Park, goals in either half from Dan Kovacs saw Westbury United secure a 2-1 win away at Chippenham Park, for whom Lewis McCarron struck before the break. Be sure A strong performance from Corsham Town helped them to gain a 2-2 draw at the Crown Fields, ending Keynsham Town’s eight-match winning run in the process. After James Ollis had opened the scoring from long range for the league leaders, Corsham grabbed an equaliser in the 25th minute through Adam Mitchell. A bullet-header from Nick Chandler edged Corsham into a surprise lead at the break, but midway through the second half, Keynsham rescued a point thanks to a powerful header of their own from Adey Harvey. Bishops Lydeard plundered five goals away from home for the second week on the bounce, registering a 5-2 win against bottom-side Portishead Town. Harry Millar struck twice during a five-goal first half for the visitors, with Ryan Brereton also getting on the scoresheet, yet the major plaudits went to Mark Clunie who scored two long-distance screamers for the rampant Lydeard. A curling left-footed effort

from Callum Elms set Welton Rovers on their way to a 3-0 win at home to Sherborne Town, with Joe Garland and Chris Pile adding further goals either side of the break. Chard Town have now scored for 21 consecutive games in all competitions, after defeating Bishop Sutton 4-1 at the Dening Sports Field. James Boyland put the hosts ahead after half an hour, with substitute Steve Friend, Alex Stafie and Liam Cleal then adding goals after the break for the eighth-placed Chard. Warminster Town grabbed a crucial point in their fight for survival, with Matthew Dyer stabbing home an equaliser from Jack Miluk’s cross to claim a 2-2 draw at home to Wincanton Town, while the fixture between Almondsbury and Oldland Abbotonians remained goalless throughout. The bottom two were Brechin City with 20 points and just above the Meadowbank Thistle 22. The second programme in this look back, is from a Scottish First Division fixture on Saturday 4 th February 1978 between Heart of Midlothian and Hamilton. Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our runners-up in the league, we also picked up the Sportsmanship Cup and Programme Award. 2001-2002 was great season for the club as the

wottonprinters.co.uk

Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards. 2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th. In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues. The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division. We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award. The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts. Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

wottonprinters.co.uk

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years. The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2. The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides. The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1 st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one. Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

bucklandathletic.com

westwardgroup.co.uk

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign. The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds. For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons. What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football. Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them. Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football. 2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls. We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be
