Homers Lines around in the FA Vase.

Hello everyone and welcome along to Homers Heath for this afternoon's fixture when we entertain old rivals Bradford Town in the Second Round proper of the FA Vase here at Homers Heath. This is our first game in the competition this season as we were exempt until this round after our good run last season, which saw us get down to the Quarter-Final stages, I am not sure whether this is also Bradford Town's first game of this competition, or whether they have played in a previous round after a quick phone call to Mark my friend at Bradford Town, I can confirm this is also their first fixture in the competition this term. Many of our regular supporters will remember the battle of the unbeaten teams here a short while ago when a good Bradford Town side just edged the competition by the odd goal in three, hopefully that won't be the result today. In that fixture our goal came from our leading scorer Jared Lewington with Sam Jordan and Will Hailston securing the points for the visitors. At this stage in the Homers Lines today, I would like to give a big warm Buckland style welcome for the second time this season to the players, management team, club officials and all the spectators that will have made the journey down here again for the second time this season. We hope and probably know that you will all enjoy yourselves today here at Homers Heath like you normally do, and we are always pleased to welcome you lads from Bradford, you are a credit to your club not only in the way you support your team but in the way in which you all conduct yourselves. The only thing is I would like to send you home disappointed today, as after your win here in the league hopefully it's our turn this time

wottonprinters.co.uk

Today's fixture is the middle one in a batch of three home games we are playing here at Homers Heath, last Saturday we were beaten by a very useful Cadbury Heath side in a league fixture. Today we are involved in an FA Vase game and next week we will be home again to Corsham Town in the Les Phillips Cup competition, which is the League Cup for the Western League. We seem to be in a bad run of form and confidence is a little low at the moment as we have only won two of the last seven fixtures, which we know we can do a lot better, but with injuries and suspensions, and as I said low in confidence things don't seem to be going our way at the moment but hopefully that can be turned around starting today. The last seven fixtures have seen us lose at away at Tiverton Town, home to Bradford Town, we did have a good win in a tough encounter away at Cribbs, the following week, we took a thumping up at Bridgwater Town, before winning a tough encounter once again here at Homers Heath over Bridport, then we lost by the solitary goal away at Bitton, which was followed by last Saturday's disappointment here going down by the odd goal in five to Cadbury Heath. It's difficult to put the finger on what is going wrong at the moment as all the players have a good quality about them but the rub of the green has not been with us. Last Saturday's game here was a major disappointment when somehow we managed to let a two goal advantage slip and ended up on the wrong side the five goal encounter. To be fair to the visitors from Cadbury Heath when we did take the lead through a well taken Gavin Hammon goal on the half hour mark, it was well against the run of play but who cares as we do need to score more goals. It really was good to see Gavin back after his long layoff and actually starting a game from the beginning instead of coming on as a substitute for a few minutes towards the end of each fixture, so hopefully he may now be fit enough to be considered for

Homers Lines selection each Saturday. Despite being a goal in front we really rode our luck and when the whistle sounded for half time it would have been no injustice had the visitors been 3-1 up. We increased our advantage in the 55th minute when our top marksman Jared Lewington toe poked home from six yards out to give us, what many of us thought was going to be a big enough advantage to collect all three points despite the visitors playing some very good attacking football. Not long after this second goal we had a very good shout for a penalty turned down by the man in the middle, much to the annoyance of the majority of the 142 spectators in attendance. But Cadbury Heath had other ideas and fought their way back into the game when George Boon scored a well taken goal. The fat was in the fire not long after, when Sacha Tong charged down a clearance and ran towards goal and then brought the scores level when he made no mistake from close in. We were all getting edgy now and with just ten minutes left we suffered yet again when Boon scored his second goal much to the huge delight of the players and the few travelling spectators than that made the journey on the coach. Despite pushing hard for an equalising goal it wasn't to be, and the home players and spectators couldn't fail to hide their disappointment at another three-points slipping away. Having said that, congratulations must go to a very useful Cadbury Heath team who secured their first ever win here at Homers Heath since we joined the Western League in the 2012-13 season and my good friend Martin from the Cadbury Heath, had the biggest grin I have ever seen on his face, when he came into the clubhouse for a hand shake and a celebratory pint or two before making the journey home on the coach. Next Saturday will be a first when Corsham Town will visit us in the Les Phillips Cup competition more details to follow in next week’s edition. Saturday saw our Second and Third teams bothsecure wins, the Second Team travelled down to Paignton for a fixture against Roselands in the Herald Cup competition. My informant tells me although they didn't play well at all they

wottonprinters.co.uk

managed to return home winning the fixture by the odd goal in five after being 3-0 up at one stage the goals coming from a Lewis Placket double and a solo from up-and-coming young striker Jordan Ewing, at the time of writing this piece I am not sure who we have drawn out of the hat for the next round. On the same afternoon the Third Team were at home at Forches Cross where they were entertaining East Devon side Kentisbeare in the Devon Senior Cup. My informant on this one tells me it was a close run game with the visitors taking the lead just before the half-time whistle to go into the break with a one goal advantage. Lee Pike reduced the arrears and made things all square after a good free kick and set him up but up popped Pike to head home the winning goal with very little time left on the clock to give our lads an away fixture in the next round when they will travel to Chagford. This weekend sees the Second Team travelling away to near neighbours Kingskerswell and Chelston for a South Devon Premier League fixture. The Third Team according to my information are due to play home at Forches Cross, once again when they will entertain Newton Spurs Second Team in a South Devon League Division One game. Last weekend saw the Ladies First Team winning their game here at Homers Heath against Yeovil Town Intermediate by 7-0 with Laura Gough scoring twice and singles from Abigail Meier, Kirsty Caunter, Sarah Stacey, Amber Coates and Leah Brooks. The Ladies Second Team were without a fixture. Yet again I believe that's three weeks in a row with no game, but tomorrow they do play when they will face Halwill up at Forches Cross with a 2pm kick-off. Tomorrow the ladies First Team have a big Woman's FA Cup fixture here at Homers Heath when they entertain Brislington from the Bristol area this game also will kick-off at 2pm, but should the scores finish level at the end of ninety minutes there will be extra time

amount for the club coffers, which by far is the biggest fundraising day of the year.

I will just finish the Homers Lines today by giving a very big thank you to all those volunteers who helped out on the evening of our bonfire and firework display fundraising evening, which took place last Friday. There must have been at least twenty to twenty-five volunteers not only working to get everything prepared, for example, all the fireworks in place and ready to be let off along with the organising and stacking of all the wood and pallets that made such a tremendously spectacular bonfire, all of which work was done during the day. Also of course to all the volunteers who turned up in the evening to be stewards along with all our regular volunteers who man the kitchen and bar also those who volunteered to organise the outside barbecue where I am led to believe all the hot dogs and burgers were cooked to a treat. I can't name you all because I would for certain forget someone and then feel awful about it. So you know who you were and you all deserve a big pat on the back as we raised a good

Also a big thank you to those who organised and worked and attended and spent a few pounds at the recently organised Rowcroft Hospice charity fundraising day in the clubhouse, I can let everyone know that just over £1000 was raised on the day thanks to everyone's generosity and donations, etc. Finally today I would like to give a plug to a very good book I have come across about the 125th year anniversary of the Western League called ‘ANOTHER VIEW FROM THE TERRACES’ written by Sandie and Doug Webb and priced at £12.50. It really is a must for the anoraks amongst us and would be a good stocking filler for someone as a Christmas present it is packed with all some good reading and interesting history of the Western League since its conception and we have a page to ourselves which is good. Cheers, Roy Homer Holmes - Club Chairman

JP’s Commercial Columns very kindly sponsor a player or other things around the club. No matter how small your contribution you can all rest assured that every penny helps. We as a club would like to thank you all very much, it really is most appreciated, I mean that most sincerely. Whilst on the subject of sponsors, some of you may have noticed the new Kitson Solicitors advertising sign at the entrance to the ground. Kitsons have been supporters of the club, ladies and men's teams, for a while now and have recently extended their sponsorship to include the new roadside advertising at the main gate. Thank you for your increased and continued support. Whilst talking about advertising at the main entrance I would like to give a big thank you to Dan Hooper from Teignbridge Taxis who has agreed to extend their sponsorship package for another 12 months. Teignbridge Taxis are the biggest taxi company in Newton Abbot so usually have a car available when you need one. So if you need a taxi in Newton Abbot please call 01626 333333 and they will be happy to help you.

Attendances are up slightly this year, which I firmly believe is down to the extra advertising being done in and around the Newton Abbot area. Combined with our superb Twitter feed, we now also have a modern well-presented Facebook page and superb Website. These things along with the big A4 size fixture lists which are circulated to over one hundred pubs and shops in the South Devon area every three months are certainly having a positive effect. Enjoy the game everyone, thank you for your support and don't forget....UP THE BUCKS...!! JP. John Piller - Commercial Director Sponsors for the Cadbury Heath game were Southern Lubricants, and they chose Heath’s Sacha Tong as the man of the match. Ryan Piller of Southern Lubricants shown handing over the award to Sacha.

The area around the main entrance really is a great advertising spot which gives maximum exposure to those that want to advertise their business there. So If anyone would like to advertise at the entrance to the club please contact me at jpbafc@hotmail.com or call me on 07836 774048 and I will be happy to quote you a very competitive price. Some of you may have noticed the new club Facebook page, well now we also have a brand new club website. Please go to www.bucklandathletic.com to see the new site. Expertly put together by Jamie Sinclair and his dedicated team at 'What's On magazine, it is still being built although there is already a fair amount of content, with loads more to come. Thank you Jamie, you are doing a fantastic job, keep up the good work.

Our Visitors Today - Bradford Town Ground Bradford on Avon Sports and Social Club Telephone 07801 499168 Founded 1992 Nickname The Brad Colours Blue Change Red League Western League Premier Division 2016-17 Western League Premier Division, 5th Postcode BA15 1EE Website www.pitchero.com/clubs/bradfordtownfc Directions On entering Bradford on Avon follow the signs for A363 to Trowbridge. The ground is after a mini roundabout and behind a stone wall on the right hand side. Twitter @BradfordTownFC HONOURS Western League Division One Winners 2013-14 Bradford Town Football Club History Bradford Town FC was formed by Les Stevens and his wife Pat in 1992. They started playing at St. Laurence School in Bradford on Avon, in the Wiltshire County League where the pitch had to be roped off before every home game, and the half time tea made in the boot of a car. In the 1993-94 season they gained promotion to the Wilts County Premier League. They then started to ground share with Trowbridge Town at the old Frome Road ground in Trowbridge until moving to their present ground in Bradford on Avon in 1996. They gained promotion to the Western League in the 2005-06 Season under the management team of Mark Hodkinson, Andy O’ Pray & Ted Miluk after finishing runners up in the Wilts County Premier League the previous season. In their first season they finished 10th but slipped to 17th & 13th in the following two years. For the 2008-09 Season we had a new management team of Paul Shanley and his assistant Mark Edwards – both ex players, who were team members when the club was formed, indeed

wottonprinters.co.uk

Paul was the first club captain. 2008-09 also saw the installation of the Club’s floodlights officially switched on by Steve Phillips of Bristol Rovers. We then had our best season to date finishing 3rd in the league after challenging for promotion. Season 2009-10 saw the installation of another stand complete with seating for 100. The team reached the second round proper of the FA Vase losing out to Wellington in a very close game. After a blip in mid season following the result of losing prolific goal scorer Matt Minis to Frome Town, the team got back on winning form and finished 4th in the league. 2010-11 Season saw the team finish 6th and 2011-12 Season finishing 5th in the league. Season 2012-13 saw Paul Shanley added Ali Belcher to his management team. This season saw the management team guide the team to 3rd, where with fewer injuries and silly loses may have seen us in with a shout of promotion, which just eluded us. Early exits from both the FA Cup and the FA Vase were a disappointment and Paul hoped that we could improve on this for the season 2013-2014. The 2013-2014 Season saw the club focus on the first team, following the disbandment of the Reserve Team. This season saw the Town’s push for promotion succeed when they won the Division One league by a clear 13 points with our top goal scorer Sammy Jordan netting a total of 77 goals and winning the League’s Top Goal Scorer award. Manager Paul Shanley also picked up the Div.1 Manager of the Year award. The team were runners up in the Wilts Senior Cup losing out to Melksham Town on penalties after an exciting final at Chippenham Town’s ground in front of a 500+ crowd. The FA Cup was disappointing as we went out in the first game, and we didn’t fare much better in the Vase where we went out at the second stage. 2014-2015, our first season in the Premiership was a very good one for the most part. Our Visitors Today - Bradford Town progressed to the 3rd round of the early stages of the FA Cup. We were even more successful in the FA Vase where we got through 6 rounds before missing out on the quarter finals having been beaten by Highworth Town 2-1. We made it to the quarter finals of the Les Phillips Cup and once again ran out runners-up in the Wilts Senior Cup. Most of the season saw us in contention with the top three but we fell away badly at the end of the season. Injuries, suspensions and poor play saw us finish the season in 8th place. 2015-2016 saw us finish in 8th place once again in the league. We progressed to the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup getting knocked out by Chippenham Town in front of a crowd of nearly 400 & reaching the 4th round of the FA Vase

losing out to Hartley Wintney. After years at the helm Paul Shanley decided to step down as manager. 2016-2017 started with a new management team of Danny Greaves former assistant manager of Bristol Manor Farm, assisted by former fans favourite Aaron Wilson. The club also saw a new Chairman Mark Hodkinson & Vice Chairman Jon Phillips, both who have always had long standing connections with the club. Danny guided the side to their highest league position in the clubs history, finishing in 5th position. The club start the 2017-2018 season with the majority of last years players, alongside some new additions, including the return of goalscoring favourite Sam Jordan.

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Bradford Town Today we give a big warm Buckland welcome to our visitors Bradford Town for a second time this season for this FA Vase 2nd Round cup tie this afternoon. We welcome their management team, players, club officials and of course their supporters that have made their second journey down to Devon this season. We hope they all enjoy their time here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities that we have to offer and later on have a safe journey home. Have started their fourth season in the Premier Division, and this league campaign started away at Brislington and they won a tight game 1-0, M Wall scoring, and they picked up their second league win when they defeated new boys Wellington at home 3-0, A Conradi, D Cottle and W Hailstone all on target. It was a better in their third win, away at strugglers Longwell Green Sports, winning this one 5-0, with five different scorers on the scoresheet, A Conradi, D Cottle, M Lenihan, N Loader and K Rendall. They were held to a 0-0 draw with Bitton, but were back to winning ways when they defeated Chipping Sodbury Town at home 2-1, D Cottle with both those goals. But they had drawn their last three league games, starting with a 2-2 draw away at inform Shepton Mallet, Cottle and Hailstone, 1-1 at home against Odd Down (Bath), own goal getting them a point, and then they were held to a 0-0 draw away at Wells City, they were the visitors here at Homers Heath against ourselves, Buckland on the 23rd September, and it was meeting of the divisions two unbeaten teams and it was Bradford who kept their run going winning for the first time in the Premier Division against ourselves, 2-1, S Jordan and W Hailstone getting the all-important goals. They were at home against Bridgwater Town next and again it was a 2-1 win, Jordan and R Scott scoring, and a third consecutive 2-1 win came away at Clevedon Town, Jordan and Scott again on target, and they made it twelve games unbeaten when they defeated Cribbs at home 4-1 K Rendall getting two, D Cottle and Jordan scoring. That great uneaten start to this league campaign came to an end on the 28th October when they were beaten by league leaders Street away 2-0, but it was back winning ways last Saturday with a 2-1

wottonprinters.co.uk

success away at Hengrove Athletic. So they arrive at the Heath up in fourth place in the Western League Premier Division and are real title contenders this season, and they have lost just once in fourteen league games, picking up thirty-one points. They are unbeaten at home having played six games, winning four, drawing two, scoring twelve, conceding four, gaining fourteen points, and they have won their last two games there. Away they have now played eight times, winning five, drawing two, losing one, scoring fourteen, conceding seven, gaining seventeen points. They have attracted 631 spectators to their six home league games, at average of 105.16, with their highest attendance being 152 when they played Bridgwater Town on the 30th September, their lowest crowd was 66 when Wellington were the visitors on the 12th August. In the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round they were beaten at home by Odd Down (Bath) 4-3, Cottle, Hailstone and Lenihan on target. In this seasons Les Phillips Cup Preliminary Round they were away at Division one side Calne Town and went through when they defeated them 4-2, S Jordan with a hat-trick and Conradi scoring. In the 1st Round of this cup competition they will be away at league leaders (and the only side to beat them in the league this season so far) Street on the 18th November. Buckland Athletic’s FA Vase History Our FA Vase adventure started off in the 200809 season when we were a South West Peninsula League Premier Division team, and started and finished in the 2nd Qualifying Round, when we were beaten away at Porthleven (SWPL Division One West) 4-3, that coming after we raced into a 3-0 lead. In 2009-10 season, we again started in the 2nd Qualifying Round and again we went out early this time at home against Saltash United (SWPL Premier) 4-2. The same thing happened in the 2010-11 season, again in the 2nd Qualifying Round, this time we went out against Bridport (Western League Division One) at home 2-1. We went just a bit further in the 2011-12 season, in the 2nd Qualifying Round we defeated Elmore (Western League Division One) at home 5-1, but went out in the 1st Round when we were beaten away at Falmouth (SWPL Premier) 5-2. In the 2012-13 season we were now members of the Western League Premier Division, and we started this season in the 1st Qualifying Round at home against Portishead Town (Western League Division One) and we won this tie 5-1. In the 2nd Qualifying Round we were at home against Porthleven (SWPL Division One West) and won his tie 7-1, in the 1st Round we were away at Saltash United (SWPL Premier), and we won a tight game 1-0, but we went out in the 2nd Round when we were beaten at Homers Heath by Downton (Wessex League Premier) 5-2. In the 2013-14 season we began in the 2nd Qualifying Round away at Exmouth Town (SWPL Premier) and we won this tie 2-0. In the 1st Round we ran out 4-0 winners at home against Bristol Manor Farm (Western League Premier), but again went out in the 2nd Round at home against Saltash United (SWPL Premier) 3-0. That took us into the 2014-15, and we started in the 1st Qualifying Round at home against Cullompton Rangers (SWPL Premier), winning 1-0. In the 2nd Qualifying Round we were at home against Wellington (Western League Division One), running out 7-1 winners in this tie. In the 1st Round we were at home again, this time against Longwell Green Sports (Western

and again we won a tight a tie 1-0. In the 2nd Round it was our fourth home tie of this run, this time against Bristol Manor Farm (Western Premier) and we won this 2-1, meaning we made it into the 3rd Round for the first time ever, and we were at home again, this time against Bodmin Town (SWPL Premier), but we went out of the competition beaten 4-1 on the day. In the FA Vase 2015-16, we started in the 1st Round away at New Milton Town (Wessex League Division One), and we won this tie 5-0. In the 2nd Round we were at home against Sholing (Wessex Premier) and past winners of this competition and we won this tie 2-1 after extra time, to took us into a 3rd Round tie at home against Bradford Town (western League Premier), and we were beaten in this tie 2-1. The 2016-17 season ‘s run in this great competition will be remembered by all, and we started in the 1st Round and were away at Sholing (our second meeting in two seasons) and we won this tie against the Wessex League Premier Division side 3-0, Groves, Lewington and Gardner all on target. In the 2nd Round we were at home against Newport IOW of the Wessex League Premier and we won a very tight tie 1-0, and it was an own goal that took us through. In the 3 rd Round we were away at Horsham YMCA from the Sussex Combination Premier and we won this tie 3-0, Laughton, Groves and Gardner all scoring. Onto the 4th Round and we were on our travels again, this time at Chichester City again from the Sussex Combination Premier and we won this tie 3-1, Lewington getting two, and Gardner. Into the 5th Round and it was another long journey when we were away at Hinckley AFC from the Midland League Division One and won a great game of football 4-3, Gardner getting two, Hammon and Groves, and it was played in front of a crowd of 418. That took the club into the 6th Round (Quarter-Final), and a very tough game away at Bromsgrove Sporting from the Midland League Division One, and they ended this league season as champions, in the Vase they were beaten in the semi-final, and we fell just a little short and were beaten 2-0 on the day, played in front of a great crowd of 2984 on a Sunday afternoon.

Bucks Ed’s Say Hello everybody that is attending todays FA Vase 2nd Round tie against Bradford Town, we hope that you have an enjoyable after here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities that we have to offer, before later on having a safe journey home.

nineteen points, second placed Waldon Athletic have played six games and collected sixteen points, whilst in third place Kingsteignton Athletic have played six, picking up thirteen points. Our 2nds are now in fifth place having played just five games and collecting nine points.

The 1st Team are having a sticky patch of form at this time, after starting this league campaign with a run of nine games unbeaten we have now lost four league games in the six, picking up just six points in this run. This has now seen us fall down into fifth place in Premier Table, with Street (top), Willand Rovers, Melksham Town and todays visitors Bradford all climbing above us in the table, and at this time we are starting to fall behind, so we now need to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible.

In the South Devon League Premier today they are five league games, they are Ashburton versus East Allington United, Kingskerswell & Chelston versus Buckland Athletic 2nds, Paignton Villa versus Kingsteignton Athletic, Roselands versus Upton Athletic and Waldon Athletic versus Brixham AFC 2nds.

In the League last Saturday Ashburton 31 Brixham AFC 2nds, Dartmouth 4-1 Paignton Villa, East Allington United 8-0 Loddiswell Athletic, and Upton Athletic 3-2 Ivybridge Town 2nds. Midweek Action: In the Premier Division on Tuesday evening, Cadbury Heath came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw at Brislington. Ben Harris fired Brislington ahead ten minutes into the second half, before Simon McElroy grabbed an equaliser for the Heath. On Wednesday, a goal in either half from Craig Veal and Brad Ausden led Willand Rovers to a 2-0 win at home to Hengrove Athletic. In the First Division, Kyle Box and Matt Brown were among the scorers as Keynsham Town claimed a 3-2 win away at Ashton & Backwell United. Despite taking a one-goal lead through George Mapletoft, Sherborne Town were knocked out in the first round of the Dorset Senior Cup, going down to a 2-1 defeat at Verwood Town. There was better news for Bridport the following evening, with an early double from Mark Salter helping them to a 2-0 win over three-time winners, and current cup holders Weymouth. Premier Division: Cadbury Heath pulled off a remarkable late fightback to defeat Buckland Athletic 3-2 at Homers Heath. Gavin Hammon gave Buckland the lead on the half hour mark, with Jared Lewington then doubling the hosts’ advantage early in the second half. With less than 30 minutes left on the clock, Cadbury were staring down the barrel, before two goals from George Boon and a strike from Sacha Tong helped them to turn the game on its head as they left with all three points. Street maintained their three point lead at the top of the table, with Steve Murray scoring either side of half-time in their 2-0 victory over Shepton Mallet. Willand Rovers have now won four of their previous five league games, after romping to a 4-0 triumph at home to Brislington. Craig Veale headed them ahead in the sixth minute, with Luke Alden then doubling the lead after James Blake had had a penalty saved for the hosts. Veale grabbed his second of the game just after the hour mark, before Brad Ausden completed the scoring 20 minutes from time. Bradford Town held on to defeat Hengrove Athletic 2-1 thanks to a pair of goals close to half-time. In first-half stoppage time, Alex Monks knocked home a penalty to put Bradford

ahead, and then in the early stages of the second half they increased their lead through Sam Jordan. Hengrove pulled a goal back on the hour mark through Ben Crewe, but they failed to find an equaliser as Bradford held out for all three points. Melksham Town’s strong home form continued, with Ryan Bole scoring the only goal of the game during the second period in their 1-0 win over Clevedon Town who had Ollie Barnes red-carded late on. In the battle between the bottom two, Wells City moved seven points clear of Longwell Green Sports, after goals from Harry Davidson and Brendon Abood led them to a 2-0 win. There was also a 2-0 victory for Odd Down at home to Wellington, with Asa White and James Dunn each scoring before the break. Bridgwater Town made it three away wins on the bounce, after goals from Shaun Copp, Harry Horton and Ryan Burrows fired them to a 3-0 triumph over Cribbs at The Lawns. Goals in either half from Aaron Anglin and Tom Bradley helped Hallen defeat Chipping Sodbury Town 2-1, after they had fallen behind to an early strike from Jonathan Morgan. First Division: Chris Pile scored for the sixth consecutive game to lead Welton Rovers to a 20 win at home to Malmesbury Victoria. Pile opened the scoring five minutes after the break, before adding a second late on as Welton moved up to third. Westbury United remain top of the table despite falling to a 1-0 defeat at home to Calne Town for whom Stuart Windsor was the goalscoring hero 11 minutes from time. Secondplaced Cheddar had Robbi Maggs to thank for the goal in their 1-0 win at home to Almondsbury, while a brace from Dan Wise, plus a goal from Gary Chapman saw Wincanton Town defeat Bristol Telephones 3-0. Alex Stafie equalised in the 32nd minute for Chard Town during their 1-1 draw with Keynsham Town who had taken an early lead through Cameron Shorney. Devizes Town fought back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw with Roman Glass St George. The visitors were two-up at Nursteed Road thanks to a long range effort from Joe Swift and a headed finish from Ryan Radford. Devizes

then got back into the game just before half-time through Jake Roberts, before claiming a share of the points when Jake Walters slotted home a penalty during the second half. Radstock Town continued their rampant form at the Southfields Rec, with a brace from Jack Biddiscombe sandwiched by goals from Matt Minnis and James Rustell in their 4-2 win at home to Portishead Town. Billy Cookson played an influential role in Corsham Town’s 2-1 win away at Bishop Sutton. After laying on the assist for Ben Wickens opener, Cookson then scored a terrific winner midway through the second half after the hosts had got back on level terms. Two goals after halftime from Olly Trevarthen followed an opener from Josh Southway as Oldland Abbotonians claimed a 3-1 victory away at Bishops Lydeard. Sherborne Town are no longer bottom of the table, after they claimed an impressive 4-2 win away at Chippenham Park. Ben Pring and Ryan Tyrell bagged goals for the hosts, but they were outdone by Sherborne for whom Harry Vanderville scored twice alongside goals from Marc Caines and Elliott Mann. Paul Uppington was another man to score a brace, adding to goals from Sam Thomas and Sol Shearer in Ashton & Backwell United’s 4-3 win away at Warminster Town.

Down Memory Lane Hello everyone and welcome to another down memory lane, where we will travel together back into the distant past and have a look at a programme from a fixture a professional football encounter.

Today's memory lane comes courtesy of some programmes I purchased on eBay to boost my own collection so as I could continue writing this feature in our match day programme. Today's look back sees us travelling to Molineux to look at a Wolverhampton Wanderers programme from November 1968, when the visitors were West Ham United. This programme is slightly larger in area than our own Buckland one, and the front cover contains a black-and-white action photograph along with the two team line-ups, it also tells us the names of the three officials and the addition is one shilling in old money (5p now). Page 2 contains two adverts, the top half for Billinghams Motors-who specialise in Ford cars, the bottom half of the page is an advert for Ansell's

wottonprinters.co.uk

Beers. Page 3 is entitled ‘Ronnie Allen Calling’ and is the thoughts of the manager, where he looks back on the last few games and forward to today's fixture with West Ham, he mentions they have not conceded a goal in the last four matches. Also on this page is a list of the dignitaries at Molineux, for example, chairman, secretary, directors and president. Page 4 is entitled ‘Getting To Know You’ and has an in depth look at Wolves player Mike Kenning, where he answers questions put to him by the programme editor, there is also a picture of his wife Gill and son Gary. Page 5 is divided into two halves, the top half advertising Five Ways Pharmacy, at the bottom half making sure we buy the Sporting Star Newspaper every Saturday evening. Page 6 is called ‘Have Your Say’ and is devoted to letters written to the club with a short answer provided. Pages7, 8, 9, are devoted to today's visitors West Ham United, they contain a black-andwhite photograph of the squad and an in depth pen picture of each of the players in that squad. These pages also contain the club history and various other bits and pieces of interest, including the fact they were founded in 1895 as Thames Ironworks. Page 10 has a full-page devoted to one of today's visitors, Geoff Hurst, which is a pleasant read. Page 11 is entitled ‘Backtrack’ and looks back at previous encounters between the two sides and mentions that the clubs have met sixteen times previously in the league of which Wolves have won six, West Ham seven and there have been three draws. Pages 12 and 13 contain four black-and-white action photographs from the recent away game against Nottingham Forest, which ended goalless. Page 14 is divided into two half page adverts, the top one being for Mitchell and Butlers Limited-marvellous beers, with the bottom half being taken up by Don Everell Motors-who invite you to test drive a brand-new Ford. Page 15 is yet another letters page entitled ‘You Say’, and once again there are half a dozen letters on the page with a short answer from the editor. Page 16 is called ‘The Wolves Way’ and is

Down Memory Lane written by Gerry Summers and covers several aspects of the training regime at the club along with some other bits and pieces. Page 17 is called ‘In Reserve’ and looks at what is going on with the Second Team and what players will be good enough to join the First Team in the near future. Also on this page there is an advert for the Wolves Pool-the clubs lottery, which guarantees paying out £1000 every week, also it is looking for agents to sell the tickets to increase the sales and of course prize money. Page 18 is divided into two halves, the top half looking forward to next week's game away at Burnley and states they are looking for revenge for the two-nil defeat suffered recently at Turf Moor. The bottom half of this page is devoted to John Chapplecoach travel, who are the firm usually used by Wolves Supporters Club. For the trip to Burnley on the 16th it tells us the fair for adults return will be 15s 9d about 80p these days and the coaches will leave Molineux at 10am. Page 19 gives a detailed route to Turf Moor if you are travelling by car, it also tells you the price of admission at Burnley along with a detailed map of Burnley itself when you arrive in the town, so as you can find your way easily to the ground. Page 20 is called ‘The Social Scene’ and is full of tittle tattle and gossip about what's going on behind the scenes at the club with a list of artists appearing soon at the social club. Page 21 is divided into two parts, with the top three quarters written by Alan Williams of the Daily Express, where he looks at each of the managers in the First Division and how they are doing at this present time. The bottom quarter is an advert for Andrews Heaters-who supply industrial heaters for hire, not only to the trade but also to the public. Pages 22 and 23 are the statistics page and contain the usual bits and pieces that most other clubs have, a list of all the fixtures for the First and Second Teams this season with the games already played having the information alongside the fixture, for example, home or away attendance, score and goalscorers. There is also an up -to-date league table for each of the two teams, League Division One and the Central League for

wottonprinters.co.uk

the Second Team. It lists the next four up-andcoming games in detail and also lists the clubs leading goalscorers in each of the two teams, there is also a section called ‘Match Digests’, where it gives a bit more detail about the last four games played by each of the two teams. Page 24 the outside back cover is divided into two lengthwise, on the left the famous A-Z halftime scoreboard and on the right an advert for the Staffordshire Tyre Company. The two team line-ups for today's fixture were: Wolverhampton Wanderers: Goalkeeper - Phil Parkes, 2 - Derek Parkin, 3 Bobby Thompson, 4 - Mike Bailey, 5 - Dave Woodfield, 6 - John Holsgrove, 7 - John Farrington, 8 - Peter Knowles, 9 - Derek Dougan, 10 Les Wilson, 11 - Dave Wagstaff, 12 - Frank Wignall. West Ham United: Goalkeeper - Bobby Ferguson, 2 - Billy Bonds, 3 - John Charles, 4 - Martin Peters, 5 - Alan Stephenson, 6 - Bobby Moore, 7 - Harry Redknapp, 8 - Ron Boyce, 9 - Trevor Brooking, 10 - Geoff Hurst, 11 - Trevor Hartley, 12 - Brian Dear. A bit of research tells me the game ended in a 20 win for Wolves in front of 29,704 people. At the end of this season the league champions were Leeds United with 67 points from their 42 games, second were Liverpool with 61 points and third Everton with 57, Wolverhampton finished in 16th place with 35 points and West Ham in 8th with 44 points. Well that's it for this time will go down memory lane again soon. Cheers, Roy Homer Holmes.

Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our runners-up in the league, we also picked up the Sportsmanship Cup and Programme Award. 2001-2002 was great season for the club as the

wottonprinters.co.uk

Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards. 2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th. In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues. The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division. We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award. The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts. Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years. The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2. The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides. The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1 st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one. Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign. The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds. For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons. What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football. Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them. Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football. 2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls. We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be

Buckland Athletic - A Club History & Honours led by Lee Chapman with the 3rd Team having Nigel Holmes in charge. The Ladies1st and 2nd Teams keep their management structure for this coming season, with the 1st Team now in the SWWL Premier Division and the 2nd Team in Devon Women's League Premier Division. There will also be more junior sides added in both boys and girls teams,. The club continues to grow, and with everyone pulling in the right direction, which includes our fantastic loyal sponsors, and supporters he sky is the limit to what we can achieve. The club continues to thrive both on and off the field of the play and this is due to the hard working ethics of all the volunteers within the club.
