Homers Lines Hello everyone and welcome along to Homers Heath for this evenings Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture between ourselves and near neighbours, or at least one of the closer clubs to us, Bridport. We give a big warm Buckland style welcome to the players, management team, club officials and any spectators from Bridport who have made the journey to Devon for this evenings game, we hope you all enjoy your short stay with us tonight and will join us in the clubhouse after the final whistle to enjoy a bite to eat and a pint, or a soft drink if that's what you prefer, before making a safe journey home. This game originally was scheduled for the 12th September but the league, in their infinite wisdom, decided to move it to this evening to help Bridport have a better chance in their FA Cup fixture on the following Saturday 16th September at home to fellow Western League club Cadbury Heath, this game ended all square 2-2 in front of healthy crowd of 262 people. The replay the following Wednesday evening also ended all square 2-2 after the ninety minutes but today's visitors scored the all-important winner in extra time, to earn a nice cash bonus of £7,500, this game also had a decent crowd of 203 watching. This saw Bridport draw an away tie at National League South club St Albans City and after a brave display were just edged out by the odd goal in three, with once again a rather good attendance, this time 683 people. Looking at the draw for the following round had they (Bridport) won that fixture they would have had a home tie against Boreham Wood a club in the same division as Torquay United, the National League with the winner of that particular game collecting a £12,500 bonus. Because of their involvement in this FA Cup run today's guests are slightly behind with their fixtures. Our last game here at the Heath saw the only two unbeaten teams in the division facing each

wottonprinters.co.uk

other and disappointingly it was Bradford Town who kept their record with ours disappearing after being defeated by the odd goal in three. Bradford Town are one of the best supported sides that come here each year as they always fill their team coach with spectators to travel down for the fixture, so for them it was a great day out. The game was a closely contested affair as probably we thought it would be, Bradford took the lead deservedly so in the 12th minute when Sam Jordan headed home a cross from Dan Cottell. Jordan had a chance to double his tally and the visitors lead ten minutes later, but his shot whistled past the far post. We could have been three behind before a goal deep in stoppage time levelled things up when a superb cross by Dan Griffiths was met with a great header from Jared Lewington to send the teams in all square after the first period. Early in the second half we missed two sitters within a fiveminute spell and add to that two superb saves from visiting gloves man Jamie Bartlett meant we were still looking to get in front for the first time in the afternoon. Just as the game seemed to me to be ending in a draw with both sides maintaining their unbeaten run the visitors snatched all three points close to the final whistle when a deep cross from Ricky Scott was met by Will Hailston who looped his header back across goal and into the net to send the travelling spectators wild with delight as they were the team still carry the tag of ‘unbeaten’ so far this term. It must have been a very nice journey home on the coach for those who had made the effort to get themselves to Homers Heath for this top of the table clash. The following Saturday we put the disappointment of the defeat at home to Bradford behind us and travelled to Cribbs for what would be once again a very even encounter (as those who follow us know there are no easy games in the Western League, a bit unlike the South-West Peninsular League, the Western League is a lot harder]. About fifteen of us made the journey to The Lawns home of Cribbs and once again we were treated to probably the best playing surface in the Western League, not only on the main pitch but there are also three other full-size

Homers Lines pitches on the site who all look to be in pristine condition, and as we know, Bristol Rovers use this site for their training and friendly matches at the lower level so it's bound to be good with almost a full-time groundsman in charge. This game once again was tight one, and certainly a game of two halves as the saying goes, with us with the wind at our backs playing towards the clubhouse end were well in charge of the first forty-five minutes and really penned the hosts into their last third with them only threatening us on the occasional breakaway although Kenny Griffiths to make one good save in this first period but mainly it was us on the attack and in the ascendancy. Our first goal came in the sixth minute courtesy of Ben Carter, who finally scored his first goal for the club after nearly seventy appearances, when he picked his spot from fifteen yards out then he rifled the ball just inside the post giving the home keeper no chance, this time much to the delight of us travelling faithful. There was no doubt we were the better side playing some very good football but chances came and went before Nick Rudge scored a splendid goal around the half hour mark when he picked the ball up about twenty-five yards out and went on a jinking run, leaving several home defenders in his wake before planting the ball inside the post on the opposite side of the goal this time, once again leaving the home custodian with no chance. We made several more very good chances but once again our finishing let us down and when the half-time whistle blew it was two-nil in the yellows. The second half was a different kettle of fish, as now the home side had the wind at their backs and began to press us back as they pushed forward looking to get something from the game. Despite the amount of pressure from Cribbs we still made a couple of half chances at the other end. The inevitable goal arrived when Kenny was lobbed as he advanced forward. The blues now have the bit between their teeth and really pressured us but some brilliant defending and a couple of good saves by Griffiths ensured we hung on for all three points. But you can't help looking back at the first half and suggesting (as we have done many times

wottonprinters.co.uk

before) If we had put away a couple more of the very good chances we had fashioned in the first forty-five minutes the game probably would have been over, as it was last season when we thumped six goals in the Cribbs net with our marksmen on that day, being Lloyd Gardner with two and one each for Dan Griffiths, Richard Groves, Gavin Hammon and young Charlie Johansen. The following Saturday 7th October saw us slump to our third defeat in four games when we were soundly beaten on our first ever competitive game at Fairfax Park, the home of Bridgwater Town going down by four goals to one, in a game aptly named in the clubhouse after by one of the travelling faithful as the slaughter at Bridgwater. It was a disappointing ninety minutes from our lads especially in view of the fact that fiftythree people had travelled to watch the lads perform. We got off to a bad start when in the second minute the hosts took the lead when an effort from Shaun Copp fifteen yards out beat our gloves man Kenny Griffiths. This poor start meant we were now going to have to work extra hard against a rapidly improving Bridgwater team who haven't had the best of starts in this Western League since there relegation from the Southern League South West Division. Our lads drew level, much to the delight of the large Buckland following contingent when in the 14th minute a through ball saw Jared Lewington control it with his chest, turn and fire home from fifteen yards out to complete a brilliant goal. Two minutes later the hosts were back in front when we lost possession on our left flank and were punished severely when Dave Pearse after winning the ball immediately hit the back of the net with the shot. The cock-a-hoop hosts were now rampant and further increased their lead in the 29th minute after good work by Pearse had given Jack Taylor a simple tap in from eight yards out. We managed to keep the score to 3-1 at the half-time break. In the second half we again battled away without any success and were to concede yet again in the 56th minute when this time Mike Duffy's cross was met by Taylor's with his head to double his tally. It's difficult to comment

Homers Lines on a poor performance like that but the hosts certainly latched on to the fact that we had no recognised left full back and as far as I remember all four goals came from attacks down that side. We just have to put that behind us and start winning again as our aim is still a promotion spot and promotion into the Southern League. I would just like to thank all those who made the journey to Bridgwater to cheer their lads on and I am convinced the hosts would also like to thank you for all the beer you drunk and hot food you consumed from their cafe. As Dawlish Dave pointed out the last time we travelled in such numbers was a couple of years ago to Gillingham, where we also lost 4-1. On the same afternoon the Second Team also lost going down by the only goal of the game in a Devon Premier Cup fixture away at Elmore, the Third Team produced a good display and ended up drawing their game with highly fancied Watcombe Wanderers 2nds with our goals in the 2-2 draw coming from Lee Pike and Owen Coldwell.

On the Sunday the Ladies First Team produced a superb result winning away at New Milton Town Ladies, where they came away 4-1 winners in the Ladies FA Cup Third Qualifying Round tie with Laura Gough netting a hat-trick with the other goal coming from Kirsty Caunter in front of just over sixty people, of which several were the Ladies Second Team players and officials who had no game that afternoon and travelled in support of the First Team which is really great. This takes the girls into the First Round proper, and after the draw on Monday 9th October they will now be at home against Brislington Ladies (from the FA Women’s FA Premier League), on Sunday 12th November with a 1pm kick off. This is a great achievement by our Ladies in what is only their third season in existence, so please keep that Sunday free and get along to Homers Heath to cheer our Ladies on. Cheers for now, Roy Homer Holmes – Club Chairman

JP’s Commercial Columns Good evening everyone and welcome to this evening's Toolstation Western Premier league fixture against our Dorset neighbours, Bridport, who have made the journey down the A35 to be with us tonight. Buck’s Ed’s Say Tonight we give a warm Buckland welcome to Bridport for this Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture. We welcome their management team, their players, their club officials and of course their supporters that have made the trip down from Dorset this evening. We hope that they all enjoy their time here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities we have to offer and later on have a safe journey home. The 1st Team are struggling for a bit of form at this time, and have now won once in the last four games, losing the other three, in the St Lukes Bowl away at Tiverton, lost 2-1 at home against Bradford Town, and lost away heavily at Bridgwater Town in our last league game. This run comes after we were unbeaten for the first eight league games. We all know the players are good enough to stop this mini drop in performances, but we did drop into second place in the Premier Division, with Street climbing above us, and the chasing clubs have narrowed the gap at the top. We have made a new permanent signing this week, Nick Barker has joined us full time from Southern League South & West side Bideford, he

wottonprinters.co.uk

joined Bide in 2005 and went on to make 391 appearances for the club, scoring 34 goals. . Nick has helped us out during the last two seasons and is a very experienced player on the left side, with experience of playing in the Southern League South and West and the Premier Division, Bideford manager Sean Joyce spoke very highly about him, not only as a player but also as his assistant. Joyce said: "Nick’s been with me for 12 years – I got him from Totnes & Dartington as I’ll always give lads a chance, and what a servant he’s been. "He’s been outstanding and you can’t fault him, he’s got a great attitude and he’s a really good friend outside of football, which always helps "He’s played for me, he’s been captain for me and assistant manager to me, so he’s a big loss, but he wants to play regular football, which I can’t offer him at the moment. "Nick’s gone to one of my ex-players, Ellis Laight, and Buckland are lucky to have him. "I’m disappointed he’s gone but we had a chat and we came to the right conclusion, as maybe I’ve got to start looking at bringing younger lads through now, because you want to build for the next couple of years. "He’s always welcome back – he’ll be involved on Saturday for me as Buckland don’t have a game, so I wish him all

Buck’s Ed’s Say the best and the door’s always open for people like Nick Barker." The 2nd Team have now lost their last two games, in the Devon Premier Cup against Elmore 1-0, and on Saturday Kingsteignton Athletic completed a league double over us with a 20 win at Homers Heath, which now sees them in fourth place in the Premier Division table with nine points from five games. The other results from Saturday’s South Devon League Premier Division were, Brixham AFC 2nds 3-0 Loddiswell Athletic, Dartmouth 1-0 East Allington United, Ivybridge Town 2nd 4-4 Watcombe Wanderers, Paignton Villa 0-1 Ashburton, and Waldon Athletic 4-1 KIngskerswell & Chelston, and Waldon have won all five of their league games this season, and are early favourites to win the title this season. On Saturday the 2nd Team are away at Watcombe Wanderers in a league encounter. Our 3rd Team won on Saturday in the Devon Senior Cup at Broadmeadow 2-0, but the week before they were held to a 2-2 draw at home against Watcombe Wanderers 2nds. This means that they are in sixth place in the South Devon League Division One table, with only two league games taking place last weekend in Division One, on the Friday evening Newton Spurs 2nds drew 1-1 at home against close rivals Newton 66. Finally Beesands Rovers drew 4-4 at home against Babbacombe Corinthians. Harbertonford lead this division having picked up thirteen points from five games, with the 3rd Team having picked up six points from five games. On Saturday the 3rd Team are in league action and are at home against Beesands Rovers (Forches Cross).

League South West Division One On the 12th November with a one o’clock kick off, which is one league higher than our Ladies (the same as Plymouth Argyle Ladies who they played last Sunday). So on Sunday they were involved in another cup game this time in the Devon FA Senior Cup and they faced Plymouth Argyle 1st Team, at Homers Heath and this game ended in a 4-3 defeat after time, Gough with two and Chamberlain scoring. Our Ladies 2nd Team (Development side) were also in action on Sunday at home (Forches Cross) in a Devon FA Supplementary Cup 1st Round tie against Lakeside Athletic, and this game ended in a fine 5-1 win. There are three club events coming up, the first is this Elvis Night with James Burrell. The second is a day fundraising for Rowcroft Hospice and also our Firework Extravaganza, these two details are on the next couple of pages, please take a look and get there if you can.

Our Ladies 1st Team have made it into the SSE Women’s FA Cup 1st Round on the 8th October when they had a long trip to play away at New Milton Town and they won this tie 4-1, with the prolific Laura Gough scoring a hat-trick and Kirsty Caunter got the other goal. In that 1st Round they will be at home against Brislington Ladies who play in the FA Women’s Premier

They were among the founding members of the Dorset Combination in 1957. They joined the Western Football League in 1961 where they played until the 1983–84 season when they resigned and their record was expunged. Taking their reserve side's place in the Dorset Combination, the club finished 3rd in 1984–85 and then went on to win the league three times in a row.

wottonprinters.co.uk

Following the third title, Bridport was accepted back into the Western League, this time playing in Division One. A runners-up performance in 1993–94 allowed the club to return to the Premier Division, but an 11 year run in the top flight came to an end with relegation following the 2004–05 season. For the 2007–08 season, they are once again playing in Division One. Former Crystal Palace player Paul Hammond took over as manager from Kevin Donovan in the Summer of 2006 and led the club to a respectable mid table position. Boosted by a cash injection of nearly £250,000 in June 2007 from the Football Partnership which meant Bridport Football Club were able to plan major development of the dressing rooms and club house. All seemed set for the club to set about a real promotion push. However, on 22 June 2007, manager Paul Hammond resigned. Former reserve team manager Royston Davies, who Hammond sacked in October 2006, was appointed as first team manager on 30 June 2007. After a poor run of results, Royston Davies resigned as manager on 20 March 2008, citing health reasons for his departure. Davies' assistant and long-time Bridport player Mark Lock took over as caretaker manager – his first game in charge was the Good Friday game against Sherborne Town. In May 2008 ex Weymouth player Ian Hutchinson was named as the new manager. With work commencing on the new dressing rooms, there is an air of quiet confidence for the future of the club. One of the negatives of the new dressing rooms is that The Bees must play the first six league games of the 2008–09 away from home, and they have had to forfeit home advantage in both the FA Cup and FA Vase. Son of ex-player and caretaker manager Mark Lock, Darren Lock has been appointed club captain for 2008–09. The philosophy of the club is to play young, local talent, yet, being unable to pay their players appearance money, the Bees are finding life difficult. In June 2009 Ian Hutchinson left The Bees to rejoin Weymouth as Assistant Manager.

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Bridport Tonight we give a warm Buckland welcome to Bridport for this Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture. We welcome their management, their players, their club officials and of course their supporters that have made the trip down from Dorset this evening. We hope that they all enjoy their time here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities we have to offer and later on have a safe journey home. They have started this new league campaign in indifferent form, their first game was away at Cadbury Heath and they won this convincingly 41, with both L Thomas and R Hebditch scoring two each, but their second game at home against Willand Rovers ended in a heavy 5-1 defeat, the Port consolation goal coming from Hebditch. In the second home league game they suffered a second defeat, this time against new boys this season Wellington, losing 3-2, T Richardson and L Thomas scoring, but they did pick up a point when they drew 1-1 away at another new boys Bridgwater Town 1-1, M Salter on target. They won for the second time away at Wells City 2-1, T Richardson and B Wood scoring, and they then went onto to defeat Bitton away 5-0, M Salter netting four of those goals, R Hebditch with the other. They secured a fourth league win when they defeated Shepton Mallet at home 2-1, E Butcher scoring both of those goals, and in their last league game they drew 3-3 away at Cribbs, T Richardson, M Salter and L Sweet scoring.

wottonprinters.co.uk

They are the time of writing are in twelfth place in the Western League Premier table, and have played just eight league games collecting fourteen points, winning four, drawing two, losing two, scoring twenty, conceding fifteen. At home they have played three games, winning one, losing two, scoring five, conceding nine, gaining three points, whilst away they have won three, drawing two, scoring fifteen, conceding six, gaining eleven points, which shows that their away form is very much better than their home form so far this season. Comparing their away form from this season to last shows that in the 2016-17 they won just four times on their travels, and drawing just three games, gaining just fifteen points on their travels, and after just five games this season they are only four points behind last season’s total. They are now unbeaten in their last five league games, winning three consecutive games in that run. Down Memory Lane Today's trip back in time takes us to the 1965-66 season when I will look at a programme from the batch I bought on eBay some time ago, to add to my own collection of programmes I had collected over the years from games I had been to watch personally.

We look at today a programme from Tuesday 28th December 1965 produced by the home club Manchester city who were to entertain Rotherham United in a League Division Two fixture with a 7.30pm kick-off and the price of this edition is 6d in old money, all this information is contained on the front outside cover. The overall size of this programme in area size is exactly the same as our Buckland Athletic edition but this one only contains sixteen pages including both front and back covers. Page 2 is divided into a top third that lists all the club dignitaries, for example chairman, secretary, board of directors, etc and

wottonprinters.co.uk

also lists the current manager, the well-known at the time Joe Mercer. The bottom two thirds contains a Christmas message to all spectators from the present chairman Mr Alexander. Page 3 is entitled ‘From the press box’ and is written by Peter Gordimer of the Manchester Evening News where he looks back at the last two or three games and forward to the next New Year's Day clash with Huddersfield Town and also once again wishes everyone a very Merry Christmas. Page 4 contains a full page advert for Stone Dri a company that manufactures rain coats and weather-wear. Page 5 is written by Ronald Crowther and looks at the change in line-ups at this period in time with clubs playing with no wingers and how people have to get used to the new 4-2-4 and 4-3-3 setups (it's a little ironic that the following year Sir Alf Ramsey won the World Cup with England playing exactly that way, without wingers so wasn't all that bad). Page six is divided into two halves, with the clock tower containing an advert for Truman's (steel) Limited. The bottom half of this page lists all the goalscorers so far this term for the First Team and the Reserves who play in the Central League, leading marksman at this time for the First Team was Mike Somerby another wellknown name from the past. Page 7 contains a black-and-white photograph of the sixteen players in the Rotherham United squad. Page 8 contains the half-time A to Z score board that was very common around this time, well before mobile phones could be people in touch and under the letter ‘O’ I see Aldershot are at home to Torquay United. The rest of this page is made up of two adverts, the first one for the Pall Mall Restaurant and the second for Finglands Luxury Coach Travel. Page 9 contains the two team line -ups for this evening's encounter listed in the one to twelve manner and it also mentions the referee is Ken Howley from County Durham with lino is A Gorton and G Bestly. Page 10 has four adverts, top left quarter is an advert for the Royal Corps of signals are based at the Blandford camp in Dorset. In the top right quarter is an advert for a sportswear shop Roy Clark Ltd. Bottom left is an advert for Richard Bates and Sons

Down Memory Lane who run a printing service and finally bottom right advertises the Evening News football pink edition. Page 11 is called ‘Rotherham United’ items of interest and looks that the Yorkshire club's history over the years from its formation in 1925 it lists their successes over the years which aren't that many most notably being losing finalists in the football league cup in 1960-61 they had also up to this time one the Third Division North once in the 1950/51 season. Page 12 is divided into two halves with the top half advertising that the Belle Vue Manchester venue will be hosting an international circus from December 23rd until the 5th February. The bottom half of this page contains an advert for the Manchester city club shop and lists some of the items on sale and the price thereof. Page 13 is ‘Called today's visitors’ and contains a pen picture of each of the players in the previous black-and-white photograph of the team squad. Page 14 is completely taken up with a cross reference results grid of games to be played and the results of the games played by each club so far this term. Page 15 lists the fixtures for Manchester City's First Team down the left-hand side and the fixtures for the Second Team down the right-hand side with the results of each game played so far inserted, the bottom third of this page contains an up-to-date league table of both the First and Second Team under their fixtures. Page 16 the outside back cover contains a full page advert for British Rail where it tells us we can travel on the Midland Pullman to London from Manchester for 52 shillings in new money that would have been 2.10pm, second-class or 85 shillings-£4.25p in modern-day terms, this offer was open until 16th April. Bad weather meant that this fixture did not go ahead and the two met later, on 12th January 1966

Manchester City: Goalkeeper - Harry Dowd, 2 - Bobby Kennedy, 3 - Cliff Sear, 4 - Mike Doyle, 5 - George Heslop, 6 - Alan Oakes, 7 - Mike Summerbee, 8 - John Crossan, 9 - Glyn Pardoe, 10 - Neil Young, 11 David Connor, 12 - Roy Cheetham. Rotherham: Goalkeeper - Rodney Jones, 2 - Harry Wilcockson, 3 - Colin Clish, 4 - Chris Rabjohn, 5 - Peter Madden, 6 - Brian Tiler, 7 - Barry Lyons, 8 - Les Chapple, 9 - John Galley, 10 - Robin Hardy, 11 Keith Pring, 12 - John Haseleden. A bit of research tells me this game was won by Manchester City 3-1 with Somerby scoring two and Pardoe for City and Galley for Rotherham played in front of 25,526 people. At the end of the season the league champions for Division Two were indeed Manchester City with 59 points from their 42 games, second Southampton 54 points and third Coventry 53. Rotherham finished in seventh place with 46 points. Relegated were Leyton Orient with 23 points and Middlesbrough with 33 points. Well that's it for this journey we will do it again soon, Cheers Roy Homer Holmes.

The two team line-ups for that fixture were as follows:

PIGGY’S BANQUETS Why not take a look at what our function team can create for weddings, parties and indeed corporate days for companies. Our Team have great flare with both buffets and decoration of the clubhouse, to make any function held here very special for the people involved. You can contact Christine Holmes on 01626 369345 (Home) or 01626 361020 (Club) as she deals with all the bookings and indeed all the functions needs. She does have a brochure which includes a DVD available showing some of the clubhouse decorations that they have done over a number of years, so why not ring and have a chat to Chris about this fabulous location.

Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. This was the season we won our first Premier Division Championship, a crowning glory to our runners-up in the league, we also picked up the Sportsmanship Cup and Programme Award. 2001-2002 was great season for the club as the

wottonprinters.co.uk

Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards. 2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th. In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues. The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division. We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award. The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts. Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

wottonprinters.co.uk

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years. The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2. The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides. The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1 st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one. Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

clubwebsite.co.uk/bucklandathleticfc01

westwardgroup.co.uk

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign. The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds. For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons. What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football. Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

wottonprinters.co.uk

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them. Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football. 2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls. We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be

clubwebsite.co.uk/bucklandathleticfc01

westwardgroup.co.uk

Buckland Athletic - A Club History & Honours led by Lee Chapman with the 3rd Team having Nigel Holmes in charge. The Ladies1st and 2nd Teams keep their management structure for this coming season, with the 1st Team now in the SWWL Premier Division and the 2nd Team in Devon Women's League Premier Division. There will also be more junior sides added in both boys and girls teams,.
