I make no apologies for inserting this piece about Charlie Hardingham into this programme here again as there must be some people who didn’t get the previous edition against Shepton Mallet and maybe some of you are still unaware of the club’s sad loss. It is with a deep sadness that I open this Homers Lines with the very sad news of the death of long serving club stalwart Charlie Hardingham who sadly passed away on Saturday morning, the 12th of August just after 9:30am, after an illness that had laid him low over the last few weeks. Many of you here will have known Charlie as he was often at the ground doing various bits and pieces i.e. washing kits/frying chips/painting and many other things that he turned his hand to, that enabled us to run the club the way we do Charlie was at this club long before myself, and in fact was the man who asked me to join and become a linesman for the team he was running at the time, which was the under 14’s in which both his son Paul and my son Billy played, that all seems such a long time ago now. I will do a better piece on Charlie in a later programme as he deserves it. Before the Shepton Mallet game we held minutes silence which gave us all a little time to think of and remember Charlie. Charlie’s funeral will take place at the Torbay crematorium at 3:30pm this coming Thursday the 24th of August, and after the ceremony back here at the clubhouse. Thank you

Hello everyone and welcome along to Homers Heath for tonight’s Toolstation Western League Premier Division fixture between ourselves and Wells City. At this point I would like to offer a big warm Buckland style welcome to the players/ management team/club officials and any travelling spectators that have made the journey down to Devon this evening to watch the game. We do hope you all enjoy your short stay with us and will join us in the clubhouse after the final whistle to enjoy a a bite to eat and a pint of before making a safe journey homewards. Tonight sees the first team playing their fourth league fixture of the season of which three have taken place here at Homers Heath, with the first league game seeing us edgeing out newly promoted Wellington by the odd goal in five, with our goals that evening coming from a brace from Richard Groves and Charlie Johansen that was followed the following Saturday when we travel to Chipping Sodbury, a journey that usually takes just under the two hours but lasted almost three as we were held up in some terrible motorway traffic congestion, as must have been the team, who left one hour before ourselves and luckily, they did. The game at Chipping Sodbury was a very entertaining end to end affair with us looking the better of the two teams and playing some really attractive football without really stamping our authority on it. But considering we were down to the bare bones it was a very good result. This game saw the gaffer Ellis having to play all the whole 90 minutes at centre back as unavailability’s left us rather stretched with just three teenagers sitting on the bench, but once again we ran out winners this time by the odd goal in seven which suggests if you want

to watch plenty of goals we are the team to follow. But credit to the lads who did make the game and all of them played very, very well. In the Chipping Sodbury game it was rather strange that all four goals were scored by different people. Charlie Johansen/Richard Groves/Chris Wright and Jared Lewington. Today’s visitors enjoyed a £1500 bonus on the first game of the season when they won their extra preliminary round FA Cup encounter against fellow Western league club Cribbs 2/1 at home, and traveled away to Bideford last Saturday for the first preliminary round. They have also played three league games before tonight’s encounter losing away at Odd Down 3/0 on Tuesday the 8th of August, and drawing 2/2 at home to newly promoted Hengrove on Saturday August the 12th, and their first league win was a 21 victory over newly promoted Wellington. So a bit of a mixed bag so far for Wells city. Our last game here at Homers Heath saw us entertain Shepton Mallett, which turned out to be a very tough encounter which saw us eventually run out the winners by the only goal of the game. The game started at a frantic pace with both sides looking to get an early advantage and the play ebbed and flowed from end to end but the first and best chances fell to the visitors when our keeper Kenny Griffiths pulled off an absolutely brilliant save to deny the visitors noseing in front when he somehow managed to tip a rocket of a shot from close range from Tom Hill over the bar, much to the relief of the home faithful This great save was equalled a few minutes later when once again Griffiths pulled off another remarkable stop to thwart this time

Tyson Pollard, who thought he had scored but Kenny and other ideas. We ourselves also made some good chances the best falling to Charlie Johansen, who headed over from close range with the goal at his mercy. But just before the half-time break Charlie redeemed himself when he tapped in from close range after good approach work by Lloyd Gardner and Jared Lewington had given him the opportunity. The second half saw us beginning to get on top and make a lot of very good chances, but our finishing was very poor, when we did everything but score on at least six occasions three of them being one-on-one with the keeper but somehow Shepton Mallet and their goalkeeper Tom Easterbrook kept the score down to the single goal, and they always looked dangerous when they ventured on several occasions into our penalty area, but resolute defending and with Kenny looking well in control in his 6 yard area we denied the visitors a goal and a share of the points. I was talking to one or two of their spectators in the bar after the game and they felt they had done enough to earn a draw, but I think although we looked a bit dodgy at times we deserved the three points for the number of good opportunities we created especially in the second period. It’s always a nail-biter when you only have the single goal lead, especially for us older spectators with various heart problems, but when the final whistle sounded the relief amongst us all was clear to see, and after the first three games we have secured all nine points which is the start we were really looking for when this term started. The second team have played a couple of pre-season friendlies since there are two games in the Throgmorton Champions Cup which we made history in becoming the first

South area side the lift the trophy since its conception about three or four years ago The game against a lively Bishopsteignton side ended with a 3/1 victory to our lads which was a credit to them, seeing as the second team have been hit hard this season with good players leaving to play elsewhere, whether this is to do with the long Jam situation that stops them being promoted into the Peninsula league I don’t know. But noticeable players who have moved on are last season’s captain Sam Peardon: Ryan Harrison/White: Gordon Fice: Shane Gill: Lewis Perring with rumours that Matt Beer and Nick Hayman will also be on the move soon. This is half of last term’s league winning team. But on the other hand we have not been idle and several new players have been signed on to replace them. So we wait and see what will happen in the second team this season. The third team likewise have also lost three or four players who have all moved on block to Liverton in the south-west peninsular league division one East where Chris Newnham’s father Leon is now the first team manager, once again we have an influx of new players. Many of which are youngsters from our youth team last season. They also have played a couple of friendlies winning their first won comfortably eight Neil here against Newton Rovers, but going down 2/1 in their second friendly when they travelled to Dawlish to face a very useful black Swan team and were just edged out by the odd goal in three with one of our youth team players scoring the goal. The ladies first team also played one friendly here against a very strong Bristol city academy side who played some great football and beat

us 5/1, although that was no disgrace they really were a good useful outfit, including a couple of Welsh under 19 internationals so a good learning curve for our ladies. The next fixture here for the first team will be yet another home fixture this time when we entertain Brislington this game with a 3 PM kick off this game on Saturday the 26th of August. As you can see we had a free Saturday last weekend which I suppose wasn’t a bad thing in view of the fact that we are still missing influential midfielder Danny Griffiths, who has to serve a one match ban which is going to take a long time and he will miss all the games we play in August, waiting for Dartmouth to play their first league fixture and that will bring him again for us, I do believe Dartmouth have offered to play our second team on Friday night the 1st of September down at Longcross will allow him to take part in the Melksham home fixture here on the 2nd of September, with many people thinking even at this early stage in the season it could well be a six pointer. But as I have pointed out before, this season three teams will be promoted into the Southern league South and West division, so a good season would be very useful in our quest to take another step up the pyramid system and moved into that Southern league. Well that’s it for this time. See you all the next game. Cheers for now Roy Roy Homer Holmes

Manager’s Say Good evening all and welcome to tonight’s league fixture vs Wells City. Last week’s win against Chipping Sodbury was certainly hard fought as we struggled to find rhythm and pace to our game and really causing our own problems with sloppy play going forward, but we did defend well at times and I was pleased with our clean sheet with goalkeeper Kenny Griffiths making some great saves. With no game at the weekend we had a rest from training as we now go into a run of games against some well prepared Western League sides starting with tonight visitors. We will need to be at our best at both ends of the pitch to get the three points and keep our unbeaten start to the season going. Enjoy the game Ellis

Liam Head - Captain After a good start to our league campaign t was a shame not to have a game on Saturday to keep it ticking over. But the players will have no excuse on Tuesday after having Saturday off, so we should all be full of energy and hopefully put another 3 points on the board. We have had three different kind of wins so far, the latest being a game we should of made easier for ourselves but showed we can see a 1-0 out as a team and keep our defence solid. All eleven players on the pitch worked hard and the subs when coming on. Tuesday will be a tough game as is any game in this league but we will go out there to win. Liam

Success was immediate winning the first ever Somerset league title a feat repeated again the following year. In 1892/93 Wells entered the Bristol & District league, the forbearer of today’s Toolstation Western League of which Wells is a founder member. It was

wottonprinters.co.uk

recorded that it was a Wells player who scored the first ever goal on the opening day of the season in a 2-0 victory Vs Mangotsfield. In 1893/4 Wells re-joined the Somerset Senior league as well as moving to their present location at Rowdens Road. Wells were invited back into the Western League in1928/29 and competed in both the Somerset and Western leagues eventually leaving the county league in 1931. After the war years Wells competed in Div. 1of the Western league eventually winning being crowned champions in 1949/50 pipping Poole Town on goal difference. Success became more difficult in the following years and Wells City re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960-61 with the Reserves competing in the Mid-Somerset Football League. The club finished very much mid – table until 1965-66 when they were third behind Street and Welton Rovers Reserves. They were Runners-Up behind Paulton Rovers in 1971-82. Between 1977 and 1998 Wells suffered from the yo-yo effect, promotion to the Premier division one year, relegation the next. It wasn’t until the 1999/2000 season that Wells once again cemented themselves in the County’s premier division. Wells City became Somerset Senior Cup champions in 2006-07 season defeating Burnham on Sea at Weston super Mare’s Woodspring Stadium 2-1. After an absence of almost 50 years, Wells City returned to the Western League Division 1 in 2008-09 with a mid-table finish. Wells City was crowned Toolstation Western League Division One Champions at the end of 2009-10 season. In 2011 Wells reached the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup with a home tie to Woking Fc with the visitors coming away comfortable winners. That was to be the highlight for Wells as after only a brief spell of 3 seasons in the Premier division found them relegated back into Division 1 in 2012-13. A period of rebuilding was needed and a few

Our Visitors Today - Wells City seasons in the lower mid table positions followed. A change in direction late 2014 which has seen a gradual change in fortunes resulting in Wells having their most successful season to date; gaining promotion back to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division and becoming

Champions of Somerset beating Taunton Town, Frome Town, Weston S Mare and a thrilling 2 – 1 victory over Larkhall Athletic in the final to lift the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time in the clubs history.

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Wells City Tonight we give a very big warm Buckland welcome to Wells City for this Toolstation Western League Premier Division game. We welcome their management team, players, club officials and of course their supporters that have made the journey here to Homers Heath this evening. We hope that you all enjoy your time here and make use of the facilities we have to offer and later on all have a safe journey home. Their new league campaign started away at Odd Down (Bath), and that ended in a first defeat 3-0, they then entertained new boys Hengrove Athletic at home, and they picked up a first point for the season with a 2-2 draw, L Hadergjonaj and D Maynard scoring, and that was followed by their first league win of the 2017-18 season 2-1 at home against the other side promoted from Division One, Wellington 2-1, B Harris and R Padfield scoring. So at the time of writing that points haul means they were in tenth place in the Premier Division table. Their season actually started with an FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round game at home against fellow Western League Premier side Cribbs, and they won this tie 2-1, and picked up a cheque of £1500 in the process. On Saturday they were back playing in the FA Cup in the Preliminary Round when they will be away at Southern League South & West (Step Four) side Bideford, but they went out of the competition when they were well beaten in North Devon 6-0. They have played them once before in this competition way, way back in the 1949-50 season when they were in Western League One, in the 2nd Qualifying Round and away they drew 2-2, but were

wottonprinters.co.uk

beaten in the replay at home 3-2 in that run which started in the Preliminary Round against Glastonbury away winning 4-1, then in the 1st Qualifying Round they won at home 1-0, Bideford were in Western League Three at the time of this run. The furthest they have been in the competition was the 4th Qualifying Round again this was way back in the 1954-55 season, the run started in the 1st Qualifying Round at home against Bridgwater Town (who were in Western League One), which they won 2-1 at home. In the 2nd Qualifying Round they were away at Clandown (Western League Two), winning this tie 2-0, in the 3rd Qualifying Round they were at home against Radstock Town (Western League Two), they won that game 4-0, then in the 4th Qualifying Round they were at home against Newport IOW (not known which league they were playing in at this time), and they were beaten 4-1. After tonight’s game they are at home against the third new team this season relegated Bridgwater Town, and that is followed by another home game against Willand Rovers, and in eight Premier Division meetings they have collected ten points, at home they have played four games, winning one, losing three, scoring eight, conceding seven, gaining three points. In last season’s Premier Division game they were beaten by the East Devon side 1-0. They are then away at Cribbs, and in last season’s corresponding game they drew 2-2. They are now into their second spell in the Western League Premier Division, the first one starting after they were promoted from Division One

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Wells City for the start of the 2010-11 season, in which they finished in ninth place, the following season, 2011-12 they dropped down to finish in 12th place and finally in the 2012-13 season they finished down in 19th place, and were relegated back to Division One, in those three seasons they had played 108 games, winning 36, drawing 18, losing 53, scoring 178, conceding 211, gaining 126 points. The 2016-17 season was the start of their second spell and to date they have played 41 games, winning 11, drawing 11, losing 19, scoring 71, conceding 96, and gaining 44 points. Premier

Buckland Athletic’s Record Versus Wells City We have only met Wells City four times in the Premier Division, and the first season was 201213, as at the end of that season Wells City were relegated into Division One, and it has now taken them three seasons to get back into the Premier. The next time was in the 2016-17 season, when they again won promotion from Division One again to the Premier. We first met them at home on Wednesday 6 th March and we won this game 4-2, in front of a crowd of 73. The team that played: K Griffiths, B Head, D Gaze, L Burgess, C Kelly, D Lewis, J Mudge, M Booth, G Hammon, C Wright, D Stevens, with substitutes L Drew who replaced Lewis, E Phillips replaced Booth, S Revell replaced Wright, the scorers on the day were C Wright with two, M Booth, and E Phillips. Both J Mudge and L Head received yellow cards in this encounter. We played away on the Monday 1st April and won this encounter 4-1 with the crowd being 56 on this day. The team that played: T Buckler, L Drew, D Gaze, B Head, C Kelly, L Burgess, B Carter, M Booth, J Mudge, C Wright, D Stevens, substitutes were Hammon on for Mudge, E Phillips replaced Booth. We have also met them once in the FA Cup in the 2013-14 season, when Wells City were in Division One, it was in the Extra-Preliminary Round here at Homers Heath on Saturday 17th August, and we were well beaten by them on the day 3-0, played in front of a crowd of 79. The team that played: K Griffiths, K Green, D Gaze, L Burgess, B Head, A Jeannin, B Carter, M Booth, E Laight, J Micklewright, S Revell, with substitutes J Havlin and L McAuley, and Burgess was booked.

Fisher, M Booth, C Roles, A Jeannin, J Havlin, B Carter, G Hammon, L Head, J Micklewright, with substitutes K Green replaced Roles, M Beer replaced Hammon, J Webber replaced Jeannin, with the goals coming from J Havlin with two, G Hammon and C Roles, and B Carter received a yellow card. So now onto the last season 2016-17, we first played at home on the 6th September and we ran out 5-2 winners, with Jared Lewington scoring a hat-trick, and Gavin Hammon and Charlie Johansen also on target, the game played in front of a crowd of 115. The team that played was: G Fisher, L Drew, L Perring, D Griffiths, S Laughton, L Head, S Revell, R Groves, G Hammon, J Lewington, L Gardner, with substitutes C Johansen replacing Gardner, N Rudge replaced S Revell, with Laughton and S Revell receiving yellow cards. The return game away was on the 4th February and we completed the double over them winning 2-0 away, with G Hammon, and C Johansen scoring our goals, with the crowd being 54. The team that played: G Fisher, C Wlaters, L Drew, N Rudge, K Green, L Head, D Griffiths, R Groves, G Hammon, J Lewington, L Gardner, substitutes C Johansen replaced Hammon, S Laughton replaced Green, with both Green and Groves were booked in this game. So in four Western League Premier Division meetings we have managed to get the twelve points from those meetings, at home we have won both games, scoring nine, conceding four, gaining six points, whilst away we have won two, scoring six, conceding one, gaining six points.

We also met them in the Les Phillips Cup 2nd Round this season on the 19th February and it was here again at Homers Heath, and we ran out 4-0 winners in this cup tie, the attendance was 43 that day. The team that played: T Buckler, L Drew, G

Midweek Action: Melksham Town tasted victory for the second Monday on the bounce, defeating Odd Down 3-0. A tight Premier Division affair turned dramatically midway through the secondhalf when Kane Simpson was given his marching orders and Melksham took advantage of the extra man instantly thanks to the prolific Gary Higdon. After plundering 28 league goals last season, Higdon has already taken his season tally to six in three games this time around with a nine-minute hat-trick to single-handedly end Odd Down’s unbeaten start. The following evening, Bradford Town claimed their third straight win too, thanks to a 5-0 thrashing of Longwell Green Sports. Dan Cottle got the scoring underway in the 19th minute, before Martin Lenihan doubled the advantage ten minutes later. Nathan Loader and Anthony Conradi both scored either side of the hour mark to put the result beyond doubt, before Karim Rendall added a fifth in injury time. Charlie Johansen maintained his strong start to the season, scoring the only goal in Buckland Athletic’s 1-0 win over Shepton Mallet, while Craig Herrod scored twice and Steve Murray once in Street’s 3-0 derby victory against Bridgwater Town. Wells City claimed their first three points of the season, with goals from Ben Harris and Ross Padfield helping them defeat Wellington 2-1, and at The Lawns, Ben Dowdell notched a brace in Cribbs’ 3-0 win over Cadbury Heath. Goals from Daniel Clement, Steven Fitzpatrick and Jake Thomas fired Chipping Sodbury Town to a 3-1 away win over Bitton, while Tyler Davis scored just after the hour mark to salvage a 1-1 draw for Hallen against Brislington who had taken the lead through Aaron Cornwall. On Wednesday, Luke Alden scored either side of the break in Willand Rovers 5-1 win away at Bridport, while Hengrove Athletic and Clevedon Town drew 0-0. In the First Division, Bristol Telephones kept up their perfect record with a 4-1 win away at Almondsbury. Lee Pitman and James Batch each scored doubles for the victors, with Almondsbury still searching for their first point of the season. Devizes Town remain unbeaten after goals from

wottonprinters.co.uk

Rob Mitchell and Tom Slater helped them see off Warminster Town in a 2-0 win, while a solitary strike from James Rustell saw Radstock Town edge to a 1-0 win over Sherborne Town. Kieran Jones scored in either half as Malmesbury Victoria defeated Chippenham Park 30, handing the away side their first defeat of the campaign in the process. Matthew Brown also scored twice, adding to goals from Kyle Box and Craig Wilson in Keynsham Town’s 4-2 win over Portishead Town, with Corsham Town claiming their first point following a 0-0 draw against Westbury United. Goals from Josh Dakwa and Sam Downes helped Bishop Sutton come from behind to win 2-1 away at Wincanton Town, while Calne Town recovered from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2 with Oldland Abbotonians thanks to strikes from Billy Gleed and Mark Dolman. There was also a 2-2 draw at Bowdens Park, where Tom Smith scored deep into stoppage as Welton Rovers denied Cheddar their first league win of the season. In Wednesday night’s fixture, all the major action took place after the break in Chard Town’s 2-2 draw with Roman Glass St George. Sam Wentland put the Saints ahead soon after half-time, but before long they were behind with Max Westlake and Steve Friend scoring a quick-fire double for the hosts. Those goals looked to have wrapped up the win, but Roman Glass had other ideas, and in the second minute of stoppage time they secured a point with Joe Swift converting from the penalty spot. FA Cup: Willand Rovers are through to the next round of England’s biggest cup competition thanks to a 2-1 win over last year’s Western League champions, Bristol Manor Farm. Willand were ahead after just three minutes thanks to Brad Ausden’s second goal in as many matches, but saw their late disappear in the opening minutes of the second half when Troy Simpson equalised for the visitors. Just as it looked as though a replay would be needed, a calamitous mistake in the Manor Farm defence allowed Willand to snatch victory with Luke Mortimore rolling the ball into the empty net. Odd

Down were another to beat higher ranked opposition, with Asa White scoring the only goal of the game in their 1-0 win over Mangotsfield United. Steve Holland’s ninth minute strike helped Bridgwater Town see off Brislington in a 1-0 victory, while a brace from Mark Salter plus an injurytime strike from Declan Cornish saw Bridport defeat Street 3-1. On a disappointing afternoon for Wells City, doubles from Craig Duff, Ryan Turner and Billy Tucker saw them unceremoniously dumped out of the competition following a 6-0 defeat away at Bideford. Clevedon Town were also knocked out following a 1-0 loss at Barnstaple Town, with Hengrove Athletic’s run also over thanks to a 4-1 home defeat Buckland’s conquerors, Bodmin Town. Justin Bishop’s second half goal wasn’t enough for Chipping Sodbury Town who fell to a 3-1 defeat against Bishops Cleeve, but there was joy for Cadbury Heath who saw off the challenge of Yate Town thanks to Sacha Tong’s 51st minute header. Premier Division: In a reduced league program, two goals from Joe Morgan led Shepton Mallet to 2-1 win at home to Wellington, while at Trowbridge Road, there was a goalless draw between Bradford Town and Bitton. First Division: Bristol Telephones remain the only side with a 100% record, after defeating Welton Rovers 2-1 at West Clewes. It was the home side who went ahead just before the break, with Alex Chapman converting a penalty after Joe Battrick had been felled in the area. No sooner had the game kicked off, and the league leaders were back on level terms with Michael Grist converting a penalty of their own ending a frantic few moments at the end of the first half. There was just one goal after the break, and it belonged to Leon Britton who headed home to make it four from four for the Phones this season. Jack Miluk’s fourth goal of the campaign was followed soon after by George Butler’s first as Warminster Town got back to winning ways thanks to a 2-0 triumph at home to Portishead Town. At the other end of the table, Almondsbury picked up their first points of the season

wottonprinters.co.uk

following a 4-1 thumping of Devizes Town. Alex Bisp scored twice for Neil Bailey’s side, with Marley Walters and Jack Dempsey also getting themselves on the scoresheet. In the game of the day, Oldland Abbotonians left it late before claiming a 3-2 win away at Sherborne Town. The hosts had taken the lead just before halftime through Henry Vanderville, only for Oldland to hit back and move ahead thanks to a pair of goals either side of the hour mark from Luke Lecrass and Josh Williams. Sherborne managed to get back on level terms thanks to substitute Jon Delahaye, but that wasn’t the end of the scoring and Oldland grabbed all three points when Tayako Nembhard found space for a stoppage time winner. Westbury United remain unbeaten this season, after Joe Kirkpatrick’s goal handed them a 1-0 win away at Bishops Lydeard, while Radstock Town and Calne Town drew 1-1 at the Southfields Rec with James Rustell scoring for the hosts, and Billy Gleed for the away side. Cheddar claimed their first win of the season, as Sam King’s 4th minute strike helped them see off Roman Glass St George, with Corsham Town also winning 1-0 against Ashton & Backwell United thanks to a 69th minute penalty from Leigh Rogers. Bishop Sutton picked up their second win of the week, with goals from Nathan Rendell, Mason Dagger and Chris Hind helping them come from behind to beat Keynsham Town 3-1. Elsewhere, there was a 1-1 draw between Wincanton Town and Chippenham Park, while Malmesbury Victoria defeated Chard Town 1-0.

Memory Lane Aston Villa v Liverpool 15 December 1984 Hello everybody and welcome to the journey back in time together when we will look at a programme from the distant past. Today’s trek back in time takes us to 1984 when I will look at a programme I bought on eBay to add to my own stock of programmes that I had collected from games that I had actually been myself to see. Today’s programme sees me looking at an Aston Villa edition when the visitors to Villa Park were Liverpool. The front cover gives us all the information we need about kick-off time etc and mentions that the league sponsors at this time were Canon, it also tells us the price which is 50p. The front cover contains a photograph of several Villa players at the local airport and mentions today’s match sponsor is Mid Wales Development. Page 2 is called kick off and looks at what has happened in the division since the start of the season in August, also on this page is a list of all the Villa dignitaries i.e., president/ chairman/directors etc. Page 3 is called Team Talk and is written by current manager Graham Turner, where he looks back at the last couple of matches and forward to today’s encounter. Page 4 is a full-page advert for Mita coppiers who are the main shirt sponsors of Aston Villa. Page 5 is called Where Are They Now and looks back at three former Aston Villa players, namely Ian Ross Ray Gradon and George Pritty and gives a quick run-down on what those people on being these days. Page 6 contains two black-and-white action photographs from the recent 1/0 win here against Sunderland with the goal collected all

three points being scored by Paul Rideout. Page 7 is called Sidelines and gives several bits and pieces of news and gossip throughout the club, including listing what is on sale at the club shop and would make a good Christmas present. Page 8 has two adverts the top one being for the Aston Villa programme fair and the bottom one being for Mark Walters Motors who specialise in Austin Rovers. Page 9 is another one called Sidelines and carries on in the same vein as the previous Sidelines page news, gossip and bits and pieces. Pages 10/11 are devoted to today’s visitors Liverpool with the usual pen pictures of the squad and a couple of small photographs. Page 12 is a full-page devoted to an in-depth interview by Villa player Peter Withe with team mate Mike Beddow. Page 13 is a full-page advert for the Mid Wales Festival. Page 14 is another full-page advert for Welsh Country Holidays. Page 15 contains two adverts the top one being for National Express coaches and the bottom for Super Ted holidays aimed at the younger generation. Page 16 is another concerning the Mid Wales Festival 1985 listing how the events are planned and where they take place throughout the summer months. Page 17 is full page coloured action photograph of Peter Withe sporting a bushy full beard. Pages 18/19 contain several black-and-white photographs of various people, including club owner and chairman Doug Ellis supporting what is called the Ethiopian airlift which is sending food and supplies and to Ethiopian which makes now more sense of the front cover and the players sitting on some of the supplies due to be sent. There is a couple of photographs of the aeroplanes being loaded with various goods.

Page 20 contains two adverts the top one being for Colliers Cars who specialise in Rovers, the bottom half is an advert for the update coming FA Cup third round fixture away at Liverpool on the 5th of January, with seats available at £4.50 and £3.75 with standing at £2.50 [the good old days]. Page 21 is called looking back and looks at fixtures of the area Saturday to today 10 15 and 20 years ago with a report of those games with 10 years ago a good home win 4/1 over York city 15 years ago a 2/0 home defeat by Watford and 20 years ago a 1/0 defeat away at Leeds. Also on this page there is an announcement that Aston Villa club shop goods can now be bought via mail-order. Pages 22/23 are the stats pages with all the games for this season listed with the games played so far having all the information inserted i.e. the result, the attendance who played through cable a substitute and who scored for Villa. Also on these pages we have an up-to-date league table for the three Aston Villa sides, league division one, central league and Midlands intermediate league. There is also a list of first-team appearances and goalscorers. Page 24 is a full-page advert for a video called the race for the championship and looks back over the last season and go through how the championship was won. Although this seems very expensive at £17.50p. Page 25 contains two coloured photographs from a recent friendly match played here against the Australian National football team. Page 26 is entitled, The Coach Reports and is written by Aston Villa’s coach Bill Shorthouse, where he looks at some of the up-and-coming youngsters who were playing

in both the Central League and the Midlands Intermediate League. Page 27, is another stats page, this time mostly concerned with both the second and third teams with their results so far this season and fixtures to come inserted along with appearances and goalscorers for both those teams. Page 28, the outside back cover contains the two teams lineups the today’s fixture along with a bunch of all three officials, and today’s club mascot 12-year-old Emma Stokes and also a big thank you to match ball sponsor Mr Bill Rodgers. The two teams were Villa goalkeeper Nigel Spink: 2 Gary Williams: 3 Colin Gibson: 4 Allan Evans: 5 Brendon Ormsby: 6 Alan Curbishley: 7 Paul Birch: 8 Paul Rideout: 9 Peter with: 10 Gordon Cowens:11 Mark Walters: 12 Tony Dorigo: Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar: 2 Phil Neal: 3 Alan Kennedy: 4 John Wark: 5 Steve Nichol: 6 Alan Hansen: 7 Gary Gillespie: 8 Craig Johnson: 9 Ian Rush: 10 Jan Molby: 11 Paul Walsh: 12 Ronnie Whelan. A little bit of research tells me this game finished goalless in front of 24,007 spectators. Also, the league champions this season were Everton with 90 points from 42 games, runner-up Liverpool 77 points third Tottenham also 77, relegated this season were Stoke city who had only 17 points and they were joined by Sunderland who had 40 points. That’s it for this journey together. Bye for now. Roy.

Hi Everyone and welcome to this evenings Toolstation Western Premier league fixture against Wells City.

on board, I am looking forward to working with you.

After the disappointment of the narrow defeat to Bodmin Town here in the FA Cup Ellis and the lads have bounced back and started their league campaign with three straight wins, so lets hope they can put in another decent performance tonight and claim another three points.

Finally once again I need to thank Roger Mann and his team at Wotton Printers for helping us out with producing tonight’s match day programme.

For those of you that go online you will notice over the next few weeks a lot of activity with the club website and Facebook page. Jamie Sinclair from the ‘What’s On’ publication is a big Bucks fan and has kindly offered his help and expertise to set up a new BAFC website which will be updated at least two or three times a week, Also he is revamping the clubs Facebook page to make it more accessible to the general public. Our aim is to bring more supporters through the gate here at Homers Heath, so we really need our social media to be ‘top notch’ to get the message across to people that there really is a great football club right on their doorsteps. A club that is friendly and welcoming whilst also being hugely ambitious and aiming to play at the highest standard it can achieve. Thank you Jamie for your involvement, this is an exciting project and as a club we are delighted to have you

Jamie and I will have some more exciting news coming up soon so please keep buying the programme and watch this space!

Following the very sad passing of long time club stalwart Charlie Hardingham last week naturally Paul has been unable to produce the last two editions, but Wotton Printers have been amazing and helped us out by producing another top class programme. So just remember folks if any of you need professional printing carried out please contact Roger Mann at Wotton Printers who are based in Newton Abbot on the Brunel Industrial estate. You can contact Roger by email at info@wottonprinters.co.uk or telephone 01626 353698. Please give them a call, they do a top class job. Enjoy the game, and please join us in the clubhouse after for a drink. JP John Piller Commercial Director

Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards. 2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th. In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues. The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division. We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award. The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts. Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years. The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2. The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides. The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one. Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign. The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds. For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons. What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football. Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them. Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football. 2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls. We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be

Buckland Athletic - A Club History & Honours led by Lee Chapman with the 3rd Team having Nigel Holmes in charge. The Ladies1st and 2nd Teams keep their management structure for this coming season, with the 1st Team now in the SWWL Premier Division and the 2nd Team in Devon Women's League Premier Division. There will also be more junior sides added in both boys and girls teams,. The club continues to grow, and with everyone pulling in the right direction, which includes our fantastic loyal sponsors, and supporters he sky is the limit to what we can achieve. The club continues to thrive both on and off the field of the play and this is due to the hard working ethics of all the volunteers within the club.
