Summer by the Sea

Torquay’s coastal zoo is an oasis in the middle of the bustling waterfront area. Beneath the vast net canopy you will find nearly one hundred penguins of different species plus fur seals, puffins, wading birds and sea ducks. The site is easy to get around with prams and wheelchairs and there is a full daily programme of animal feeds and keeper talks. Plenty of Living Coasts is undercover, with underwater viewing areas, indoor arts and crafts and play areas for toddlers. There’s nowhere better to spend a long, hot summer than on the coast. At Living Coasts there’s plenty to see and do every day. In addition to the usual timetable of feeding time talks about penguins, seals, otters and other species, there will be extra activities on most days through the summer. The theme for the season is Dive and Flight, looking at the different ways in which birds - and mammals use these behaviours. Watch out for colourful mini Polar bears this summer which have invaded Torquay harbour! Spot them all to be in with a chance of winning a Junior Keeper Experience. Trail sheets can be picked up from Living Coasts until 31st August. If your children are feeling creative and practical then they’ll be able to join craft sessions, helping staff and volunteers to make environmental enrichment - that’s animal toys to us non-scientists - for playful South American fur seal pup Gemini. What’s more, you’ll be able to test your enrichment at the underwater viewing window and see if Gemini will play with you.

Everyone will be able to watch as enrichment including ice blocks is given to the animals by keepers at various times each week - so keep an eye out, especially on warm days. The Living Coasts education team will be holding story telling sessions out and about on site, mainly at Penguin Beach and Seal Cove - so sit down and enjoy a good story. There will also be fun interactive games, puppet shows, on the spot quizzes and trails with themes including Dive and Flight. Look at the web site, www. livingcoasts.org.uk for more information. The Wild Coasts Week Summer Playscheme runs from 24 to 28 August. It’s for children aged 8-12 years and includes arts and crafts, games and activities and maybe the odd peek behind the scenes in the Zoo. Call 01803 202470 to book. On Wednesday 2 September there’s a rare afterhours event at Living Coasts - Supper with the Seals. It’s an exclusive opportunity to get closer to the zoo’s South American fur seals. Guests will be able to help the keepers with feeding time and enjoy talks on how staff care for the seals in the zoo and how conservationists work with them out in the wild. The event will begin at 6.00pm and end at around 8.00pm. A mini portion of fish and chips is included with each ticket. Booking is essential. Tickets are priced at £13.00 members, £15.00 for nonmembers. All proceeds raised from the evening will be used to support conservation work at Living Coasts.

Cockington Country Park achieves the Green Flag Award Cockington Country Park, which is managed by local conservation charity Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, is proudly flying the Green Flag again this year after being awarded the coveted flag for being a quality green space. The Green Flag Awards are judged by an army of more than 700 green space experts, who volunteer their time to visit applicant sites and assess them against eight strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement. Cockington Country Park is one of Torbay’s most loved green spaces and it attracts thousands of both local and visiting families every year. The park is cared for and maintained by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust’s team of gardeners and volunteers, who spend hours making sure that the Country Park is always looking its best. The Trust’s Countryside manager Chris Lingard said: “We are delighted to accept the Green Flag Award for Cockington Country Park, for another year. The award is

testament to the efforts of all of our staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.” The award is especially important as the Trust is currently trying to raise the last £50,000 for the Cockington Green Heart Appeal, a fundraising appeal that will see the restoration of key areas of Cockington Country Park. As well as Cockington Country Park, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust cares for over 1750 acres of Torbay’s premier spaces including Anstey’s Cove, Berry Head National Nature Reserve and Occombe Farm. Being an independent charity, the Trust relies on the support of the local community to continue its conservation work. Everyone’s Welcome at Torbay Velopark Penwill Way, Paignton In 2012 Bradley Wiggins won the Tour De France and our recent successes at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games have rekindled the nations love of cycling. Bicycles are already gaining in popularity as an environmentally friendly means of transport, providing an escape from the daily queues in the car and of course cycling also helps with fitness. Torbay Velopark opened in July 2014 and offers cycling seven days a week away from the traffic environment. Serious cyclists share the 1500km track with children taking their first tentative steps towards a lifetime or peddling. It is the only outdoor closed circuit cycling facility in Devon and Cornwall. The track is open from 9.30am – 5pm everyday and has evening rides during the summer evenings. Prices range from £1.50 for juniors and seniors over 60 and £2 for adults. Don’t worry if you haven’t got your own bike an excellent range is available to hire for just £4. The track is open to the entire family with trailers available to hire for younger children and even trikes for people with less balance. The track is very cleverly designed to European standards with gradients

no greater than 4% up or down. The track is silky smooth so tyres can be pumped to maximum pressure making progress efficient.
