Homers Lines For the second time in a very short period I have to start my Homers Lines, with a sad announcement, this time to let those who don't already know of the sad passing of Steve Feasby who finally lost his long battle with illness a short time ago. Steve was a great bloke and was often at our First and Second Team games here at Homers Heath and was known to many of you who come along and support. It has been sad watching Steve get gradually worse over the last few months, but having said that he still made his pilgrimage here to watch the lads play football whenever he could and felt strong enough to do so. Our deepest sympathies go out to his loving wife Di and also to his three sons, (all of whom have played for us at Buckland Athletic over the years), Mark, Darren and Paul, and their respective partners and children. So in a very short time we have lost two well-loved people here at Buckland Athletic, firstly, Charlie Hardingham and now Steve Feasby. I will give more details on arrangements for Steve's funeral when I do know more. I do know a bit more now Steve's funeral will be on Friday 29th September at Torquay crematorium with the service starting at a 11.15am. Afterwards we welcome everyone to come back to the clubhouse for a get-together and remember Steve in style.

At this moment in time of writing this Homers Lines todays visitors have had a reasonably good start to their league campaign playing five matches, winning two and drawing three with nine points and a goal difference of plus seven, so at the time of writing this they are unbeaten this term. But on Wednesday night they entertained Bridgwater and this piece will have gone to the printer before I can update it, or at least that's what I envisage. Last season today's visitors Clevedon did the double over us winning at their home ground 4-3, with our goals coming from, Charlie Johansen, Liam Head and Nick Rudge, in the return fixture here at the Heath we lost 2-0. So hopefully today we will be looking to reverse that procedure and collect all three points ourselves in our quest to climb the pyramid system into the Southern League South and West Division.

We ourselves were also due to have played on Tuesday night but the league officers in their wisdom, decided that it was to be called off to allow Bridport a free week before their FA Cup tie against fellow Western League side Cadbury Heath, who by the way also had their fixture called off away at Bradford Town. I don't know how the people at Bradford Town felt but I was really annoyed that the league can ride roughshod over the fixtures when they feel they have to. I was asked initially whether I would agree to postpone the fixture here against Bridport last Tuesday but said I would not do it willingly as we last year had a superb run in the FA Vase, and no one offered to call any games off for us to have the best of chance. Also I remember the season before last having to travel to the Bristol area four times in eight days towards the end of the season. Once again, no respite was offered to us. But I do apologise most profusely if anyone made the journey here on Tuesday night expecting the fixture against Bridport to have taken place. Rant over.

Let's move on to our comprehensive away win last Saturday at basement side Longwell Green Sports who have played six times up to our visit and hadn’t got a point and in fact hadn't scored a goal until they faced us when they notched their

Homers Lines first effort on target of the season. A big thank you here to the Enid Blyton style famous five who made the long journey to Shellards Road for this fixture Pete Middleweek, myself, Bob Hext and Paignton Nick in the one car and Richard-Chris Wright's father. We bossed the game from the first whistle to the final one, and to be honest the hosts looked a rather poor outfit and you can see why they have been struggling up to now, having lost most of last year's team when the manager moved and took several players with him at the end of last season. Having said that the hosts could have taken the lead when a penalty was awarded to them after Karel Green had whipped one of their players down inside the penalty area but the resultant spot kick was saved with ease with Kenny Griffiths almost having time to kneel down and save it as it approached him at not much more than eight miles an hour I would have thought. It wasn't long after we were in front when Chris Wright fired home from close range, we had two more tremendous efforts brilliantly saved by the home keeper Adam Forster, but Richard Groves and Lloyd Gardner increased our advantage to 3-0. The hosts were to score their first goal of the season when a long range effort from San McAndrew took a wicked deflection to leave Kenny rooted to the spot. Before the final whistle sounded we had scored again when Groves slotted away a penalty to put the cherry on the cake. Although those of us who travelled thought if we had scored seven or eight it would have been a truer reflection on the ninety minutes of play.

The previous Saturday we had entertained title challengers Melksham Town here at Homers Heath in a good game and a splendid advert for Western League football. The game ended in my opinion fair at 2-2 and a point each was what each of the teams had to accept, although we left it late to get our equaliser that after being down to ten men with the dismissal of Liam Drew not helping our cause, but Jared Lewington's late strike keeping our unbeaten run going.

Last Saturday the Second Team had no fixture, but did play here on Wednesday evening against

Ivybridge Town Reserves, but Paul wanted my Homers Line’s into him by Wednesday evening, so I cannot report on that game. Hopefully we can say we got the three points.

With no game here last Saturday it was a rare occasion for the Third Team to be able to use the facilities here at Homers Heath, and they marked the occasion by winning by the only goal of the game against cross-town rivals Newton 66 in a tight match, our goal coming from a Danny Harry 25-yard screamer that rocketed into the top corner of the goal. I am led to believe this game was played in front of about fifty to seventy people, which is great for the Third Team.

Also on the day the lads had received their new Kit courtesy of sponsor Nick Parker Funeral Services and had some really decent photographs taken in front of the grandstand.

Also last weekend the Ladies First Team played here in the SSE Women's FA Cup First Qualifying Round, when the visitors were Exeter City Ladies who also play in the South West Women's Football League Premier Division like ourselves. The game turned out to be a bit onesided, with our girls running out winners 9-2, with our goals on the afternoon coming from a Kirsty Caunter hat-trick with goals in the 4th, 15th and 47th minutes, not to be outdone fellow striker and prolific goalscorer Laura Gough also notched three times in the 59th, 81st and 82nd minutes with the other three goals coming from one each for Hayley Chamberlain, Emily Hannaford and Abigail Meyer, to leave the Exeter City Ladies side shell-shocked at the margin of our victory. Winning this game entitled us to an away fixture tomorrow at Marine Academy Plymouth in the Second Qualifying Round but the home side have decided they cannot raise a side to play us.

So we received a walkover into the Third Qualifying Round, as of yet we do not know our opponents and whether we will be at home or away on the 8th October, one thing we do know for sure is the long awaited local Derby between ourselves and Torquay United here at Homers Heath will have to wait for another day.

Homers Lines There were other wins last weekend when the Under 14 team managed by former Bucks favourite and goalkeeper Neil Montandan (Monty to us) won their Devon County Cup encounter here at the Heath 5-0 against Plymstock United Colts, and as the same as the Ladies Team are awaiting the draw for their opponents in the next round.

The Buckland Devon Girls League Under 13 Team also won their first game of the season away at Budleigh Salterton 6-1 to start the season in fine form considering half the team had left during the summer break for pastures new at Galmpton.

Our Under 18 side travel down to Lakeside in Plymouth on the Sunday to play their Devon County Cup fixture, only to find when they arrived the referee called the game off just fifteen

minutes before the kick-off time due to a waterlogged pitch, that game now will take place here tomorrow although at the time of writing, I do not know the kick off time, if you are interested please ask someone during the afternoon in the clubhouse I am sure it will be sorted out by then.

Well that's about it for this time apart from just a little reminder that the First Team travel away to Tiverton Town on Tuesday 19th September for a St Luke's Bowl fixture with a 7.30pm kick-off, before playing yet another home game here on the 23rd September, when one of the leading contenders so far this term Bradford Town will be the guests.

Attendances are up slightly this year, which I firmly believe is down to the extra advertising being done in and around the Newton Abbot area. Combined with our superb Twitter feed, we now also have a modern well presented Facebook page and superb Website. These things along with the big A4 size fixture lists which are circulated to over one hundred pubs and shops in the South Devon area every three months are certainly having a positive effect. Finally a lot of credit must also go to Ellis and the lads for

putting together a great run of results propelling the club to the top of the Toolstation Western Premier league. Well done guys, hopefully you will be able to keep the good run going with a positive result this afternoon.

Buck’s Ed’s Say Hello and a very good afternoon to everyone attending our Toolstation Western League Premier side, we hope that you all enjoy your time here at Homers Heath and make use of the facilities we have to offer before having a safe journey home.

The 1st Team extended their unbeaten run in the Premier Division to eight games, dropping just four points in that run, which started in our first league game of the season, and has included games against both Melksham Town and Street.

When we played Longwell Green Sports on Saturday 9th September we reached another milestone when Buckland Athletic 1st Team played their 1000th league game, those games started in the 1987-88 season, and we have won 579, drawn 168, lost 253, scoring 2426, conceding

1396, gaining 1907 points, which means that we have won 58% of those games, drawn 17%, lost 25%, scoring 2.4 goals per game, conceding 1.39 goals per game, gaining 1.9 points per game. At home in 501 games we have won 307, drawn 88, lost 106, scoring 1327, conceding 634, gaining 1009 points, which means we have won 61% of those games, drawn 18%, lost 21%, scoring 2.64 goals per game, conceding 1.26 goals per game, gaining 2.01 points per game. Away in 499 games, we have won 272, drawn 80, lost 147, scoring 1168, conceding 762, gaining 896 points, this means that we have won 55% of those games, drawn 16%, lost 29%, scoring 2.34 goals per game, conceding 1.52 goals per game, gaining 1.8 points per game. That very first 1st Team league game was in the Devon & Exeter League Senior Division Three, and was played on the 22nd August

October with a 7.30pm kick off. Our away game against Bradford Town (was on the 11th November) is now Saturday 21st April 2018, with a 3pm kick off.

Well all our senior sides have started the season well, the 2nd Team have beaten Dartmouth 5-1 as they kick off their league campaign in the South Devon League Premier Division, and all this done after a major rebuilding job over the summer after losing twelve of last seasons title winning squad, and they won on Wednesday evening 4-2 at home against Ivybridge Town 2nds, C Srdinko getting a hat-trick and J Ewing.

The 3rd Team have now played two league games winning one (home against Newton 66 10) and drawing one (home against Babbacombe Corinthians 3-3), in South Devon League Division One, and again they have to rebuild after losing a few players from last seasons squad.

Our Ladies 1st Team started the season very well, in the SSE Women's FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round when they defeated Exeter City Ladies here at the Heath last Sunday, winning this tie 92, and that is against a team in the same South West Women's League Premier Division this season. They were due to have played Marine Academy Plymouth Ladies in the 2nd Qualifying Round, but I am told that they have pulled out of the fixture as they say that can't raise a side too play this tie. Our Ladies 2nd Team (Development side) started their season in the Devon Women's League Premier Division with a League Cup game on the 3rd September at home against Shaldon and they ran out 4-0 winners, with Chloe Driscoll and Helena Ruffles each getting two goals.

There will also be two Girls sides this season in the Devon Girls Football League, the Under 13’s in the Winter League 1 and they kicked off their season with a 6-0 win away at Budleigh Salterton Girls. The new side this season are the Under 11’s, and they will be playing Crediton, Cullompton Rangers, Moors Youth, Newton Fire, Twyford Spartans and West Exe, with their season having not kicked off just yet. Club Nickname The Seasiders CLEVEDON TOWN FC – A Short History Clevedon FC are one of the oldest clubs in the West Country and were founder members of the Western League in 1892, having played friendlies and in county competitions up to that point.

They only stayed in the Western League for 3 seasons before dropping into local leagues until returning for a second spell up until World War One. They played their early matches at the local cricket ground at Dial Hill before moving to a new site at Old Street (later named Teignmouth Road) in 1895, remaining there until 1992. After the Great War, they played in the Bristol & District and Bristol & Suburban Leagues before moving to the more senior Somerset Senior League in 1933, staying there until the outbreak of the Second World War. They continued to play throughout the war years, mainly in the Weston & District League, before returning to their original home, the Western League, after the war, remaining there until they won the League title for the first time in their history in 1992/93, when they were elected to the Southern League.

The period after World War 2 was to be one of their best spells and they achieved some national recognition for their exploits in the FA Amateur Cup during the 1950’s in particular. For a small West Country club they enjoyed many excellent runs in that competition, playing some of the then giants of the amateur game such as Harwich and Parkeston, Pegasus and Billingham Synthonia, even enjoying a cameo appearance on the emerging television network, with notable victories being achieved against Salisbury, Briggs Sports and Ilford. It was in cup competitions that Clevedon had already gained success and they won the Somerset Senior Cup several times throughout their early history, going on to

Our Visitors Today - Clevedon Town win the more senior Somerset Premier Cup as well in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Clevedon spent much of their history playing at junior level, during their early years and in the 1960’s, or in the more senior Western League competition. However they finally achieved the next stage of their development when they won the Western League in 1992/93 and were promoted to the Southern League. The 1992/93 season also saw them move home for the first time in nearly a century when they moved to a purpose built stadium, The Hand Stadium, named after the Hand family who had been instrumental in the running of the club from the 1890’s. In their first season at The Hand they went unbeaten and took their first Western League title, in front of an average gate of 421, breaking all kinds of scoring records on the way.

In their first ever season in the Southern League they finished in a very creditable fifth place under manager Steve Fey, all the more remarkable when considering that he took over the side in June with just three players remaining from the championship squad. The club settled into the Southern League and the 1998/99 season saw them win the Midlands Division and gain promotion to the Premier Division, where they remained for two seasons before suffering relegation. The club again gained promotion to the Premier Division under manager Phil Bater in 2006/07 and, in the same season, reached the 1st Round of the F A Cup for the first time in their long history, losing out to Chester City in front of a club record crowd of 2,261 at The Hand Stadium.

However, in common with many clubs, gates and income gradually fell and the club slipped back into Division One in 2009/10. Worse was to

follow in summer 2011 when The Hand Stadium was sold outright and the club found themselves as tenants of their former home. There was however some success to cheer in 2011/12 when the club won the Red Insure Southern League Cup beating Premier Division team Banbury United 2-1 on aggregate under manager Micky Bell. Despite finishing 18th in 2014/15 Clevedon Town were demoted back to the Western League due to problems with their floodlights but under Owner and Chairman, Mark Lewis, the club is looking to build new foundations and emerge on a more stable basis. In October 2015 a sponsorship deal was agreed with a personal fitness company and the Hand Stadium was renamed The Everyone Active Stadium. Micky Bell returned to take charge of the team and his young inexperienced squad ended their first campaign back at Step 5 in 19th place. In 2016/17 they improved on this by finishing 14th.

No history of Clevedon would be complete without paying tribute to the Hand family, without whom the Club would almost certainly not exist.

H G Hand (Secretary 1895-1912) and A W Hand (Secretary 1918-1968) were followed by Doug Hand, who retired as Club President at the end of the 1994/95 season after 50 years service to the club, much spent in the same way as his father and grandfather, as Club Secretary. Doug sadly passed away in November 2013 aged 92.

Without their enthusiasm and hard work over the years, the club would probably not be in the position it is now and it was only the wisdom of A W, in buying the Teignmouth Road site, which laid the foundations for the present successful club. It was a fitting tribute that the present ground was originally named The Hand Stadium after them, and the families’ service to the club has been recognised by the FA.

Kevin Camargo – Signed for the club in March 2016 from Hallen, where he was player-coach, Kevin has also played for Bishop Sutton and Brislington amongst other local clubs.

Sam Holden - Joined first joined the club in January 2016 after playing on a football scholarship at Limestone College in America. Sam also had spells with Bristol Academy, the Clevedon U-18 squad and Weston-super-Mare Youth and returned for a spell last season and again in August 2017.

Morgan Davies - Member of the successful Under 18 side at Clevedon, promoted to the first team at the start of 2017/18.

Liam Dempsey – Made his debut for Clevedon in July 2017 after previously graduating through the Academy at Weston-super-Mare and then going on to play for them in the National Conference.

Clayton Fortune – Originally signed in September 2011 after playing at Aldershot Town, Clayton played for Spurs Youth, Bristol City, Port Vale, Leyton Orient, Darlington, Rushden & Diamonds, Mangotsfield United and Weston-superMare during his career. He returned in 2012/13 before moving again to Weston-super-Mare and then Hereford United before returning to Clevedon in July 2017 as Assistant Manager/Coach.

Damien Freeman – Goalkeeper who signed in August 2017 having previously played for Thornbury Town, Winterbourne United and Yate Town.

Kaine Gazzard - Midfielder from the U-18 squad who made his senior debut in December 2012.

After leaving for spells at Bridgwater Town and Bristol Manor Farm he returned to The Hand in July 2016.

Ryan Gissing - Ryan started with the North Somerset Football Development side and went on to Clevedon United before joining us in July 2015.

Conor O’Sullivan - Former Southampton scholar released in May 2012 before joining us in July 2013 after trials at Plymouth Argyle and Cheltenham Town. He subsequently left us for spells at Weston-super-Mare, Paulton and Bridgwater before returning to the Seasiders in July 2017.

Alex Russell - Alex first joined the club in July 2012 after leaving Bath City. He started his career at Burscough before going on to play for Rochdale, Glenavon, Cambridge United, Torquay United, Bristol City, Northampton Town, Cheltenham Town, Exeter City and Yeovil Town, making over 400 Football League appearances in the process. Alex re-joined Clevedon in July 2017 after initially retiring in 2013.

Sekani Simpson – Sekani joined Clevedon from Weston-super-Mare in November 2016 having started his career in the youth ranks at Bristol City. After leaving City he had loan spells with Forest Green Rovers and Tamworth before joining Bath City, where he spent nearly 10 years and went on to make 376 appearances for the Romans before joining Weston-super-Mare in March 2016.

Lucas Vowles – Making his debut as a substitute against Cheltenham Town in a friendly during 2016/17, Lucas is a youth player associated with the North Somerset Football Development squad.

Alex White (Player-Coach) - Experienced player who signed in July 2015 having spent the 2014/15 season coaching with the North Somerset Development Team and has since carried out coaching at Clevedon; made an emergency appearance in goal in the 2016/17 season.

Danny Wring – First signed for Clevedon from Mangotsfield United in November 2008 after starting his career at Bristol City, Torquay United,

Team Bath, Worcester City, Weston-super-Mare and Newport County. He later re-joined Mangotsfield United, returning briefly to Clevedon from Yate in July 2013, and then moved on to Bath City and Weston-super-Mare, before rejoining Clevedon in July 2017.

The Management Team Mickey Bell (Player/Manager) - Micky was first appointed manager at Clevedon in May 2010 and was re-appointed in July 2015 after a spell as manager at Weston-super-Mare. He started his playing career at Northampton before moving to Wycombe Wanderers and Bristol City, where he spent 8 years before being released in the summer of 2005. After joining Port Vale for a short spell he then moved to Cheltenham Town, where he helped them gain promotion, as he had Bristol City. Injuries forced him to retire from the professional game and he moved to Team Bath as player-coach and then Weston-superMare in 2008, before leaving the following summer. He continued coaching youngsters in North Somerset and had a spell on the coaching staff at the Southampton FC Academy before being appointed at the Hand Stadium as a manager in his own right for the first time.

Buck’s Ed’s Look At Clevedon Town League Premier Division meeting. We welcome their management, players, club officials and all those supporters that have made the trip to Devon. This season, 2017-18 is their second season in this Premier Division, the league campaign started on the 12th August at home against Bitton and they picked up their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw, K Ingram scoring, and it was another draw coming away at Hengrove Athletic 0-0, and then recorded their first win away at bottom side Longwell Green Sports on the 22nd August, winning this game at a canter 5-0, D O’Connor with two, O Barnes, C O’Sullivan and I Reid scoring.

Next up was a home game against Hallen, and they won this game impressively 3-1, L Dempsey with two and K Gazzard scoring, then their first league game in September they picked up another point with a 1-1 draw at home against Cadbury Heath, O Barnes scoring. They were also in action on Wednesday evening at home against Bridgwater Town, with this game ending in a 2-1 win, I Reid and own goal getting the points..

Writing this on Sunday they are still unbeaten in this league campaign, having played six games, and collecting twelve points from those games, and they were in eleventh place in the Premier Division table.

In the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round they were at home against Bitton, which ended in 2-2 draw, K Gazzard and D O’Connor and they won the replay at home 1-0, O Barnes scoring. In the Preliminary Round they were away at Southern League South & West side Barnstaple Town and lost a close game 1-0. In the Les Phillips Cup Preliminary Round they were at home against Division One side Wincanton Town and won this tie 2-1, G Hayer and I Reid scoring. They also started in the FA Vase 1st Qualifying Round last Saturday away at Division One side Almondsbury and won this cup tie 2-1, K Gazzard and D

They will now be at home against Wellington in the 2nd Qualifying on the 23rd September After today’s game, they are then away at Brislington, and in four Premier Meetings they have collected one point, away they lost two, conceding three, gaining no points, and in last season’s corresponding game it was a 2-0 loss. Then they are away at Willand Rovers on the 30th September, and again in four Premier meetings they have picked up three points, and away they have won one, lost one, scoring one, conceding five, gaining three points, and again in last season’s game there it ended in a 5-0 defeat, the win coming in the 2015-16 season, 1-0.

This is their second spell in the Western League Premier Division, that first spell lasted for sixteen seasons, and it started in the 1977-78 season and it finished in the 1992-93 season when they were crowned champions and were promoted to the South League Midlands Division, that lasted one season and they were then transferred to the Southern League Southern Division and they were there for four seasons, but in the 1998-99 they were moved back to the Midlands Division and once again this lasted a season, as they were crowned champions and promoted to the Premier Division. They were there for two seasons, but were relegated at the end of the 200001 season and went into the Western Division and stayed there for five seasons and were crowned champions in the 2005-06 season, and again were promoted to the Premier Division.

This time they lasted for four seasons, before being relegated after finishing in 21st place in the 2009-10 season, and this time they went into the South & West Division and they were there for five seasons before their relegation.

In the first spell in their sixteen seasons in the Western League Premier Division, they played 647 games, winning 257, drawing 160, losing 230, scoring 1018, conceding 900, gaining 670 points, the lowest position they finished in was 17th place in both 1978-79 and 1984-85

Buckland Athletic’s Record Versus Clevedon Town The first time we met in the Western League Premier Division was in the 2015-16 season, after they were relegated from the Southern League South & West Division. The first league game came away on the 20th February and we ran out easy winners 6-0, L Moseley, L Gardner, G Hammon, S Gill, E Laight and an own goal doing the damage with the attendance being 81.

Team that played: T Buckler, L Drew, L Perring, N Rudge, S Laughton, L Head, J Lewington, D Griffiths, G Hammon, L Moseley, L Gardner, substitutes S Gill replaced Moseley, C Johansen replaced Gardner, E Laight replaced Hammon.

We played at home on the 30th April and we won this game 5-0, L Moseley and G Hammon each getting two, and C Johansen scoring, and the attendance was 108.

The team that played was: T Buckler, G Buckmaster, L Perring, M Revell, N Milton, L Head, L Gardner, D Griffiths, L Moseley, J Lewington, C Johansen, substitutes E Laight replaced Moseley, A Robertson replaced Gardner, and Hammon replaced Griffiths, with both M Revell and L Head being booked.

We actually first met this season on the 15 th August in the FA Cup Extra-Preliminary Round and we won that game 3-0, E Laight with two and J Lewington scoring, and the attendance was 133.

Moving onto the 2016-17 season, we first played them away on the 12th October and were beaten 4-3, N Rudge, L Head and C Johansen scoring and it was played in front of 79 spectators.

The team that played was: T Buckler, C Walters, L Perring, N Ridge, L Drew, L Head, K Green, R Groves,G Hammon, J Lewington, C Johansen, with substitutes R Dabbs replacing Head, E Laight replaced Groves, with Perring, Head, .

So in four Premier Division meetings we held the upper hand in the first season we met but Clevedon then went on to beat us twice in the second season, which means that honours are even. In those four games, we won two, lost two, scoring fourteen, conceding six, gaining six points. At home we have won one, lost one, scoring five, conceding two, gaining three points, whilst away we have won one, lost one, scoring nine, conceding four, gaining three points.

They were also in action on Tuesday evening and faced a tough game away at a team that has scored nine times in each their last two games, Cribbs, with this game ending in a very good 1-0 win. Today they are in league action and are at home against Street, and they have now played them twenty-two times in the Premier Division and have collected thirty-four points from those games, at home they won three, drawn four, lost four, scoring nineteen, conceding twenty-two, gaining thirteen points, and in last seasons corresponding game 2-1 defeat, their last win coming in the 2010-11 season 1-0. Then comes an away game at Hengrove Athletic, and in their only Premier game against them back in the 2013-14 season, and they won this game 1-0.

In their league campaign last time out they were well beaten away at Chipping Sodbury Town 4-1, lost 1-0 away at Odd Down (Bath), beaten 4-1 here at Homers Heath by ourselves, Buckland and won at home against Cribbs 2-1. They were back in league action on Tuesday evening at home against fourth placed Melksham Town with game ending in an impressive 2-1 win. Today they are away at new boys Wellington, and in six Premier Division meetings they have collected seven points, away they have won one, drawn one, lost one, scoring nine, conceding four, gaining four points, and the last time they played them in this division back in the 2010-11 season they picked up that only away win 6-0.

In their last league game they had a very good 4-1 win at home against Brislington, before that they were beaten away at Bradford Town 21, lost 3-0 at home against Willand Rovers and before that they drew 2-2 at home with high flying Melksham Town. They were in league action on Wednesday evening way at new boys this season Hengrove Athletic, which ended in a 4-1 defeat Today they are at home against Cribbs, and in last season’s corresponding game ended in a 2-1 win.

They are then away at Shepton Mallet and in last season’s meeting there it was a good 2-1 win.

Today they are away at Odd Down (Bath), and in twenty-two Premier meetings they have collected twenty-six points, away they have won three, drawn three, lost five, scoring eleven, conceding twenty-one, gaining twelve points, and in last season’s meeting there they were beaten 4-0, and their last win came in the 2011-12 season 1-0.

Last Saturday they were at home against ourselves, Buckland they were beaten 4-1, although they did register their first goal this season. Before this they were thrashed at home by Cribbs 9-0, lost 6-0 at home against Melksham Town, lost 5-0 at home against Clevedon Town, and lost 5-0 again this time at home against Bradford , they were also defeated away at Street 4-0. They faced an important game on Tuesday evening away at nineteenth placed Hallen, with this game containing the leagues bottom two sides, and the game ended in another defeat 3-0. Today they are in league action and are at home against Shepton Mallet, and in six Premier meetings they have picked up twelve points, at home they have they have won one, lost two, scoring seven, conceding twelve, gaining three points and in last seasons corresponding game ended in a 3-2 win.

Wright sandwiching a Joe Chamberlain header during their 3-1 win at home to Wells City. Stuart Windsor scored twice, and Billy Gleed once in Calne Town’s 3-1 win away at East Cowes Athletic, and a Lewis McCarron double led Chippenham Park to a 2-0 win on the road against Pewsey Vale.

In one of the most entertaining games of the day, Malmesbury Victoria overcame a two-goal deficit to claim a 5-3 extra-time win over Chipping Sodbury Town. Two goals from George Box and a strike from Justin Bishop helped Sodbury claim a 31 lead just after the break. Malmesbury then scored twice in quick succession through Josh Russell and Scott Reynolds to level things up, and with their tails up they pushed on in extra-time to claim victory.

Matty Jenkins gave the Vics their first lead of the afternoon, and they had goalkeeper Adam Clatworthy to thank for preserving that after he saved a penalty to stop George Box completing his hat-trick.

Man of the Match Josh Hughes wrapped up the victory for Malmesbury, scoring their fifth late on.

Clevedon Town left it late before booking their spot in the 2nd qualifying round after winning 2-1 against fellow Western League side Almondsbury. Town went ahead in the 31st minute through Daine O’Connor, before the home side got back on level terms in first-half injury time thanks to a free-kick from Jack Dempsey. Then, when extra-time looked like a certainty, Kaine Gazzard popped up with a winner for Clevedon in the first minute of stoppage time. Tom Morris and Dan Wise were on the scoresheet for Wincanton Town as they won 2-1 at Bridport, while Willand Rovers ran out 1-0 winners against Welton Rovers thanks to a 25th minute chipped finish from Luke Mortimore. At Weymouth Street, captain Charlie Walton scored twice, and Liam Gibbens once as Warminster Town claimed a 3-1 win over Folland Sports. Corsham Town fell to a 1-0 defeat away at Petersfield Town, but there was success for First Division leaders Westbury United who won 3-0 at Cove following a brace from Mark Robinson and a late Jamie Jordan strike. Two Neikell Plummer free-kicks were pivotal in Brislington overturning a 1-0 deficit to defeat Bitton 3-1, and Hallen fell to a 2-0 loss at Tavistock. The FA Vase is over this season for Keynsham Town, Sherborne Town and Devizes Town, with the Western League trio all falling to away defeats against Bovey Tracey, Plymouth Parkway and Windsor respectively.

Premier Division: Buckland Athletic extended their lead atop the table following a 4-1 win away at bottom side Longwell Green Sports. The home side did score for the first time in the league this season but it wasn’t enough as goals from Lloyd Gardner, Chris Wright and Lloyd Gardner secured the win for Buckland. Melksham Town and Street shared six goals in a 3-3 thriller at the Oakfield Stadium. The visitors surged ahead in the early stages thanks to a goal from Harry Foster, but Melksham soon hit their stride and grabbed the lead following a quickfire double from Joe Stradling and Dan Demkiv.

Demkiv then added his second just after the hour mark to double the advantage, but Street had the last word grabbing a point thanks to goals from David O’Hare and Steve Murray. Shepton Mallet defeated Hengrove Athletic 1-1 thanks to a goal from Joe Morgan, while a late own-goal salvaged a 1-1 draw for Bradford Town with Odd Down who went ahead in the 62nd minute through Kye Simpson.

First Division: James Boyland starred in Chard Town’s 3-2 win away at Bristol Telephones, ending their hosts perfect start to the campaign. A thirdminute own-goal put Chard in front, before Boyland jumped on an error from the Phones back-line to double the lead after just ten minutes. The home side came out firing in the second half, and got themselves back into the game in the 59th minute when Leon Britton headed home. The game’s second own-goal got the home side back on level terms, but ten minutes from time Boyland fired home a 25-yard screamer to grab all three points for Town. In the game at Lakeview, Bishop Sutton moved up to sixth following a 2-1 win at home to Portishead Town.

Down Memory Lane Hello everyone and welcome along to another journey back down the long and distant road in time, which will see us today stop in 1969, where we will look at a programme from the Notts County versus Lincoln City in a League Division Four fixture, courtesy of a batch of programmes I bought on eBay to add to my own collection of memorabilia.

Today's edition is from Wednesday 17th September, 1969 when the hosts Notts County were to entertain Lincoln City, all this information is on the front cover along with the price of the official programme was one shilling. Page 2 is divided into two adverts, the top one being for the spot the ball competition in the local Football Post and News Newspaper, with the second advert being for the South Notts Coal Board where they are looking for electrical and mechanical apprentices to work for the National Coal Board. Page 3 is

packed with information about Notts County and covers the seven games played so far this term.

It also looks at a couple of new signings and is generally very informative about what's happened and what they hope will happen during the season. Page 4 is called ‘Here Today’ and gives a detailed run-down on the visiting team today, looking at their history from their formation in 1884 and mentioning what honours they have won. Also there is a very brief pen picture of the players from Lincoln, who may play this evening. Page 5 is divided into two halves, with the top half containing a list of players from Notts County, with their playing records for this season in both the league and league cup, for example, appearances and goals scored, etc. The bottom half is an advert for J K Adcocks-who are a local building company.

Page 6 has two adverts on it the top half for Filigree Quality Lace and Nets, which I assume is to do with curtains. The bottom half of the page is an advert for the Halfway Garage Nottingham Ltd-who sell new and used Austin Riley and Vanden Plas Princess cars.

Page 7 again has two adverts on it, one for the Carlton Hill Service Station, which besides serving petrol and oil has a comprehensive range of used cars. The bottom half of this page is an advert for Sketchley Cleaners who we all know so well. Pages 8 and 9, the centre pages contain the two team line-ups in the one to twelve format. But once again we do have a mixture of some adverts around the two teams for Morley Ashmore Limited Printers of Baker Gate Nottingham, there is one for The Commodore Banqueting Rooms, next we see one for Shipstones Beers-where they are advertising their Basford bitter. Finally, the last advert is for Trent Travel-a coach company who are doing a special excursion next week for the Aldershot game with the return fare being 28 shillings. Page 10 is a fullpage devoted to new signing Barry Watling, a 23 -year-old goalkeeper who has joined Notts County from Bristol City but hasn't played yet. In the interview he gives his reasons for swapping clubs and hopes soon to be given a chance to

Down Memory Lane show what he can do at Notts County but fully realises the present keeper has to be ousted first. Page 11 once again has two adverts, the top half being for the Nottingham Car Auctions, with the bottom half being for Neale and Sonproperty advice and management developers.

Page 12 sees the top third devoted to a list of the dignitaries here at Meadow Lane with the names of the chairman, directors, secretary and club doctor are all mentioned. The rest of the page is taken up with a full list of fixtures for both the League Division Four team and the Reserves who play in the North Midlands Football League.

The results of the games played so far are inserted along with the attendance at each game and anyone who scored for Notts County.

Page 13 has several bits and pieces on it. Firstly, advertising the gold tickets with the result of the Notts County versus Grimsby Town game, which was 20 minutes and 19 seconds with the winner receiving £10, also it lists the next three games here at Meadow Lane on the 20th Exeter City will be the visitors in a Fourth Division encounter and on the 22n the Reserves will play Bradford City Reserves and 27th September the Reserves entertain Hull City Reserves, the rest of the page is taken up by the obligatory half-time scoreboard with the letter N being Plymouth Argyle versus Stockport County, the letter O being Reading versus Torquay United and the letter P Exeter City versus Aldershot. Page 14 has a black-andwhite photograph of a presentation and a testimonial cheque to former Notts County captain Alec Gibson, whose testimonial raised £675, the bottom quarter of this page sees another advert Redmayne and Todd Ltd-sportswear specialists.

Page 15 contains one big advert on the behalf of Notts County Football Club, advertising the Unbeatable Bobsworth-a lottery competition run by the club that cost is one shilling a week and could win you £1000 top prize. Page 16 the outside back cover sees a full-page advert for Players Number 10 Cigarettes, although it doesn't say how much it calls the 20, it's really good to

see an advert for cigarettes, which would be banished now by the nanny state we live in.

The two team line-ups for today were as follows: Notts County: Goalkeeper - Mike Rose, 2 - Geoff Ball, 3 Keith Smith, 4 - Brian Stubbs, 5 - David Needham, 6 - Dennis Oakes, 7 - John Ryan, 8 - Barry Butlin, 9 - Richie Barker, 10 - Don Masson, 11 John Hobson, 12 - Les Bradd.

Lincoln City: Goalkeeper - John Kennedy, 2 - Graham Taylor, 3 - George Peden, 4 - Tommy Brooks, 5 - Ray Harford, 6 - Jimmy Grummett, 7 - David Halliwell, 8 - Phil Hubbard, 9 - Rodney Fletcher, 10 Billy Taylor, 11 - Dave Smith, 12 - Jack Lewis.

A bit of research tells me this game was won by Notts County 2-0 with Masson and Barker scoring the goals, the game was played in front of 6479 spectators. At the end of this current season the league champions of Division Four were Chesterfield, who managed 64 points from their 46 league games, bearing in mind in these days it was only two points for a win. In second position were Wrexham with 61 points and third Swansea with 60 and fourth Port Vale on 59. I assume all those four were promoted into Division Three as there were no play-offs in these days. Relegated or applying for re-election were Bradford Park Avenue with 23 points from their 46 fixtures and Hartlepool with 30 points, Peterborough finished in ninth position with 48 points and Lincoln City in eighth position with 50 points.

Local side Exeter City finished in 18th position with 39 points. This was one of the few seasons that Torquay finished top of all the Devon sides finishing in 13th position in the League Division Three with 45 points, with Plymouth Argyle in 17th place with 43, well that's it for this journey back in time and do it again soon.

Buckland Athletic - A Club History The club was formed in 1977 purely as a junior club. We started life in the Torbay Pioneer League and Sandringham Park was our home pitch. As a junior club it was the biggest in the area, running a total of six sides in six different age groups for several seasons. We won many titles over the years including the Devon Youth Cup. In the season of 1987-88 we were accepted into the Devon and Exeter League and started our senior football life in Senior Division Three playing home games at Coach Road with Roy Holmes still in charge. In our first season we won the Championship and were promoted into Senior Two in 1988-89. Well in the 1989-90 season we gained promotion once more into Senior One these two promotions were gained with a very youthful side. In 1990-91 we were on the move again this time to Decoy and this season saw us win the Wheaton Trophy. We finally achieved our dream of being promoted to the Premier Division in 1992-93, having now moved to our old ground at Homers Lane and the club hasn't looked back since that move took place. In 1994-95 season saw Roy Holmes step down as first team manager and Nigel Holmes and Roger Madge took the job on. Reserves went through the season undefeated in the Devon and Exeter Senior Division Two and were promoted to Senior One. The first team ended the season in sixth place in the league table and were beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup. 2002-2003 was another successful season in the life of Buckland, the Reserves won the Devon FA Senior Cup at Coach Road, beating Princess Yachts International 3-0. They were also promoted to the Premier Division of the Devon and Exeter League after finishing in third place, that was only decided on their last game of the season when the top three sides were all in with a chance of securing the title. The First team finished up third in the table which at the start of the season was, as many supporters said beyond them but the managers got good players in at the right times through the season. We also won the Devon League programme award and finished 29th out of a total of 1100 non league programme in the renowned Wirral awards.

2003-2004 was a new era in the club’s history, a third senior side was established and went on to win The South Devon League Division Seven Championship with ease. The First team finished in eighth place, with Gary Taylor stepping down from his assistant manager position, their lowest position since joining the Devon League. The Reserves finished in fourth spot in The Devon and Exeter Premier Division, Manager Simon Glanfield stood down as manager. The programme finished first in the Devon League section of the Wirral programme awards and 11th out of 1100 non-league programmes. 2004-05 we did better than the previous season by finishing in 7 th place. Throughout this season the new ground was being worked on by a loyal band of club people. In the final year of the Wirral programme awards we finished in our highest position of sixth out of 1100, winners were Exeter City. For the 2005-06 season we started life playing our games at our new permanent home, Homers Heath on the Kingskerswell Road. The move went very well, and the ground was opened on Saturday 13th July when an estimated 300 + people turned out to see Steve Perryman cut the ribbon to open the pitch. Plymouth Argyle bringing a team up on Wednesday 13th July followed this up. And Argyle Chairman Mr Stapleton officially opened the clubhouse. Paul Feasby and Andy Paddon were in charge of the First team and we finished in our lowest league position of 13th.

In the 2006-07 season all the talk was about the re-structuring of the Devon League and South Western League. One League with three Divisions was being formed called the South West Peninsula League. We managed to finish the season in 12th place under the leadership of Phil Bayliss and Gary Taylor and we had done just enough to meet our goal of qualifying for the SWPL

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Premier Division along side the topsides in both the South Western and Devon Leagues.

The 2007-08 season was an extremely successful one for the club, the first team finished in 14th place in the new South West Peninsula League Premier Division.

We won the SWPL Premier Division best ground award, which is voted by the other clubs visits to Homers Heath we also won the SWPL Programme award.

The Reserves won the South Devon League Division 3 title, were runners-up in the prestigious Herald Cup, Devon Intermediate Cup Winners and Divisional Cup winners. The 3rd Team won the SDL Division 6 title, the Fred Hewings Cup and their Divisional Cup Final. In the 2008-09 season, the club enjoyed another successful season, the 1st team finished the season in 3rd place in the SWPL Premier Division, and for the second season running we won both the ground and programme award for the Premier division. The 2nd Team had a highly successful season, winning the South Devon League Division Two title and getting promoted to Division One, they also won the Devon Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over Lifton at Coach Road, this for the second time in the club's history. However, 2nd Team manager Ian Miller decided it was time to step down and concentrate on his now role as the clubs commercial agent having enjoyed huge success with the 2nd Team. The 3rd Team finished in second placed in the SDL Division Five and gained promotion to Division Four. Our Under 14 side also were very successful, winning their league title and league cup and winning the Devon FA County Cup at Coach Road with a fine 41 win over Plymouth Kolts.

Buckland had a phenomenal season in 2009-10, the 1st team did the double, winning the SWPL Premier Division title and the Throgmorton Cup pipping Bodmin Town to both, in what was manager Phil Bayliss’ last season in charge. They lost just three times in the league and were unbeaten in all their 19 home games. We also played in the famous FA Cup competition for the first time in the club’s history. They actually won the league on goal difference from Bodmin Town and they also beat them 2-1 after extra time in the Throgmorton Cup final played at Cullompton’s Speed Meadow. This was a wonderful way for Phil to hand over control to new manager Steve Massey for the 2010-11 season. The 2nd Team had a very successful season once again, this time they won the SDL Division One league title and they retained the Devon Senior Cup Final beating Elburton Villa Reserves at Coach Road 3-1. Again the 2nd Team manager Jim Barrett also decided to resign at the end of the season and Adam Castle will now be in charge of their new quest in the SDL Premier Division. The 3rd Team won the SDL

Division Four league title, and they will be managed again this coming season by Scott Chisholm, who has guided them to many successes over number years.

The success kept coming in the 2010-11 season, the 1st Team retained the SWPL Premier Division title, by an eight point margin, they also became the lowest ranked club to win the Devon St Lukes Bowl when they defeated Tiverton Town on penalties in that final. The 2nd Team finished in 3rd place in their first season in the SDL Premier Division, and they did win the George Belli Cup, defeating Totnes & Dartington 2nds 4-2.

The 3rd team also finished in 3rd place in SDL Division 3, are they achieved promotion. They also won the Fred Hewings Cup for the second time, when they defeated WBB 2nds 1-0. The Junior side of the club continues to grow, but we have lost both Under 16 sides, but a lot of those players ware now signing senior forms for club, so hopefully we will find a number of young stars for all three senior sides.

The 2011-12 season was another significant one in the history of Buckland Athletic. Although the 1 st team relinquished their grip on the SWPL Premier Division title, beaten into second place by a very good Bodmin Town side, we had done enough to secure promotion to the Toolstation Western League Premier Division at Step 5. We were also beaten finalists in the Throgmorton Cup, again losing out to Bodmin Town, but we did retain the prestigious Devon St Lukes Bowl, again we played Tiverton town (Step 4) in the final, this time at the Heath, but this season we ran out worthy winners in 90 minutes, 4-0. The 2nd Team finished as runners-up in the SDL Premier Division, but they did win the Herald Cup for the first time in the clubs history, beating Watcombe Wanderers in that final 3-2 after extra time. They also made it through to the semifinals of the Devon Premier Cup, beaten by eventual winners and SWPL Division One East winners Liverton United. The 3rd Team didn’t win any silverware this season, but they had a great season, finishing in fourth place in the SDL Division Two table, and were beaten finalists in the Lidstone Cup. But the most pleasing part for the 3rds were the amount of the previous seasons Under 16s side made it into the side throughout the season. Manager Scott Chisholm has now decided to stand down as 3rd Team manager, he has been in charge of them since the teams formation in 2003, and had won promotion every season, until this one.

Scott will be missed but he will remain involved with the club off the field, with former 1st team stalwarts Neil Montandon and Ben Williamson taking on the manager role with help from Nigel Holmes for the 2012-13 season. Antony Lynch will again lead the 1st Team, alongside his assistant Tom Kelly, but we have lost another stalwart for the new season, as assistant manager

Buckland Athletic - A Club History Jaimie Carwardine has now moved away from the area and has had to stand down, and again he will be sorely missed. Adam Castle will once again be in charge of the 2nd Team assisted by Paul Tucker, Simon Dungey and Steve Giles. The 1st Team’s first season in the Toolstation Western League ended in a tenth place finish, but the club did the Hospitality award and programme award in this first campaign.

The 2nd Team won the South Devon League Premier Division title for the first time in its history, they also lost out in the finals of both the Devon Premier Cup and Herald Cup to Exmouth Town and Watcombe Wanderers respectively. The 3rd Team finished in third place in SDL Division Two, and were promoted to Division One, they also won the Fred Hewings Cup beating Totnes & Dartington 3rds.

For the 2013-14, our highly successful 2nd Team manager, Adam Castle will now be in charge of the 1 st Team for its second season in the Western League Premier Division. There is a new man in charge of the 2nd Team, Simon Dungey will be the man to lead them in this campaign, while the 3rd Team will be once again lead by Neil Montandon. In his first season in charge of the 1st Team, Adam Castle led them to an 11th place finish in the Toolstation Western League Premier Division. The club retained the Premier Division Programme award. The 2nd Team finished in 4th place in the South Devon League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup, going down 3-1 to Watcombe Wanderers. The 2rd Team finished as runners-up to Dartmouth in the South Devon League Division One, but they retained the Fred Hewings Cup by beating Watcombe Wanderers 2nds 2-1, this was their third win of this trophy in the last four seasons.

What another great season for the club was 2014-15, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished as runners-up in the Western League Premier Division (Step Five), which was a great achievement, we also won the Premier Division programme award for the third consecutive season. The 2nd Team led by Neil Snell ended this season as Champions of the South Devon League Premier Division, and our 3rd Team managed by club stalwart Nigel Holmes also finished as champions, this time of the South Devon League Division One, and they also retained the Fred Hewings Cup winning it for the fifth time, they also introduced a few of our talented Under 16s players into senior football.

Now onto the 2015-16 season, firstly there was substantial drainage work done to the playing surface during the summer, and we must thank Viridor Credits

for their help in funding these works. Onto the football, the 1st Team managed by Adam Castle finished in 4th Place in the Western League Premier Division, but not good enough to reach our goal of promotion. The 2nd Team managed again by Neil Snell retained the South Devon League Premier Division title, and were beaten finalists in the Herald Cup. Our 3rd Team finished the season in the South Devon League Division One as runners-up, in what was manager Nigel Holmes last season in charge. The club fielded it’s first Ladies team managed by Grant Fisher, in the Devon Women's League Division One, and they didn’t drop a point when winning the league title, and they then added the League Cup, in what was a fantastic season for them.

Also during the season a lot of work was carried out at Homers Heath, including a new covered standing area, which incorporates two new turnstiles. The ground was fenced in, and an impressive outside toilet block was built. This work allowed the club to achieve a ‘D’ Ground Grade which is good enough for Southern League football.

2016-17 was another very good season for the club, the 1st Team finished in 4th place in the Western League Premier, and collected their best points tally since joining the league. The team also reached in the last eight of the FA Vase, going down 2-0 away against Bromsgrove Sporting, this means that it was very good season for new manager Ellis Laight. The club also won the Western League Hospitality Award and best programme award this season. The 2nd Team won their third consecutive South Devon League Premier Division title, under the leadership of Lee Chapman and Ben Robertson. Our 3rd Team under Phil Bearne and Paul Sharples finished as runners-up in the South Devon League Division One, and won their sixth Fred Hewings Cup trophy. Now on to our all conquering Ladies 1st Team who won the South West Women's League Western Division, dropping just two points over their unbeaten season. They also added the Soccerworld League Cup and the Devon FA Senior Cup to that success which saw them end this season as treble winners. Our Ladies 2nd Team finished mid-table in a very hard Devon Women's League Premier Division, and were beaten finalists in the Devon FA Supplementary Cup. There were also varies successes for our Junior sides, bot boys and girls.

We now move onto the 2017-18 season, again the aim is for the 1st Team to gain promotion to the Southern League, which in turn would allow the 2nd Team if they finished in a promotion position to move up to the South West Peninsula League. The 1st Team will again be managed by Ellis Laight, and have kept all but one of last season squad. The 2nd Team will be

The Ladies1st and 2nd Teams keep their management structure for this coming season, with the 1st Team now in the SWWL Premier Division and the 2nd Team in Devon Women's League Premier Division. There will also be more junior sides added in both boys and girls teams,. The club continues to grow, and with everyone pulling in the right direction, which includes our fantastic loyal sponsors, and supporters he sky is the limit to what we can achieve.

It has a constitution which sets out the rules that govern its relationship and membership, and elects a committee to run the organisation on behalf of its members.
