Year in Review
From Whats On Magazine
As if it was yesterday when we were cheering and looking towards a year full of promise and events to cover, 12 months have passed like nothing and 2016 is already knocking on our door! But before we say goodbye to 2015 and move on to the bigger, better things that hopefully await us, we are keen to take one final look back at things. It is a time of reflection and contemplation as I write this - over the years we have seen some of the greatest talent in the world come to the Westcountry of England. What’s On Publications was born in 1996 and in just over a month we enter into our 20th year in providing you the best in Entertainment, Theatre, live music, family days out and pretty much every single major event that has taken place in our locality. Hundreds of thousands of our readers have enjoyed all that we publish. We painstakingly collate and research the absolute best we can find for all to enjoy. Spare time and money are precious so we have always done our best to bring you the best in events and exclusives, most not even featured in the main stream press or anywhere for that fact! We also acknowledge all the hard working businesses that work tirelessly all year round to give us all a great night life and a great social life and enjoy great times with our families on days out, in all the major towns and cities that we cover. We have the largest online reach of any magazine in the South of England so I guess our content is available to everyone who is interested and we are very proud in the
sense that we fly the flag for this region and produce the most comprehensive, accurate and professionally circulated regional publication in the UK. What’s On Magazine award for Artist of the year goes to “The High Kings” from Dublin Ireland and congratulations to Martin Turner founding Member of Wishbone Ash for Album of the Year “Written in the Stars”! For more exclusives, competitions and a complete on-line version of the magazine please visit our official website & Facebook page.
Featured in this edition of “What’s On” Magazine we have Lionel Richie playing at the Eden Project- Cornwall after a triumphant performance at Glastonbury. Nick Tilly - solo artist of the month, Rod Stewart live in Plymouth, Let’s Rock Exeter Festival 2016, The amazing Riverdance Tour 2016, Christmas @ Occombe Farm, AJ’s Big Band, and lots lots more. For attractions & great days out please visit our pages on Hannahs @ Seale Hayne, Paignton Zoo, Exeter Racecourse, Gala Bingo & much much more. We also have Buckingham Lodge – our official highly recommended accommodation provider.
Our theatre section features top quality shows from the Babbacombe Theatre, Palace Theatre, Teignmouth Players, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Brixham Theatre, The Little Theatre and The Northcott Theatre. We also have all the booking details on this year’s Pantomime @ The Palace Theatre, Paignton “Jack & The Beanstalk”. What’s On’s Duo of the month is “Sax & Soul” a fantastic top duo who can adapt to pretty much any style of music from 40’s to present day!! We also have all the live music dates for the Spinning Wheel, Wellies, The Boathouse, The Queens Arms, Alberts Bar, The Babbacombe Inn and lots more featured in our What’s On & Events Guide at the back of the magazine. We would like to wish all of our readers, advertisers and sponsors a very happy, healthy Christmas and a heartfelt thank you for your support in 2015 and helping us making “What’s On” the most comprehensive consistent popular entertainment guide in the Westcountry! We are all brothers and sisters, true love is a reflection of the Saviour’s love. In December of each year we call it the Christmas spirit. You can hear it. You can
see it. You can feel it and I dearly hope it stays with each and every one of you, all year round. This magazine and every word within is dedicated to the loving memory to the families and those who lost their lives in Paris, enjoying the same as I write this magazine for you, listening to live music, sport or just a night out with a loved one and friends. Just remember how lucky we are to have our lives and each other. Here’s to a safe and prosperous 2016 From all at What’s On, Happy Christmas and a brilliant 2016 Jamie Sinclair © 2015

Big Band & Vocalists Brixham Theatre Friday 18th December - 7.30pm The swinging sounds of the big band first came into fashion in the 1930’s and one band in the South West is keeping the flame alive in the twenty first century. Devon based A.J’s Big Band is now into its 33rd year and will be on stage at the Brixham Theatre on Friday 18th December with a packed two set programme of classics from the golden age of swing. The most famous band leader of that era was of course Glenn Miller with best selling recordings such as In the Mood, Chatanooga Choo Choo and Pensylvania 6500. These pieces and

other well known arrangements from Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington will feature in the Brixham Concert. Complimenting the instrumental arrangements on stage will be the band’s stunning vocalist Paula Mitchell. Her unique style she has become a firm favourite with audiences who love her fusion of up beat numbers and sentimental ballads. With Christmas just around the corner, expect a sprinkling of festive songs guaranteed to set the feet tapping.

All Night Long US superstar Lionel Richie to play Eden Sessions
Global legend Lionel Richie is the first superstar announcement for next year’s Eden Sessions with ASUS. The singersongwriter from Tuskegee Alabama, whose smash hits include Hello, Dancing on the Ceiling and All Night Long, will play at the home of the famous Biomes on Tuesday June 14, 2016, as part of his All The Hits world tour. This will be Lionel’s first ever headline show in the South West and his first UK show since his legendary performance at Glastonbury. With more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, Lionel Richie is a global star and music icon with four Grammys, a Golden Globe and an Oscar to his name. Lionel said: “I had such a great time in the UK this year and I can’t wait to visit new places and meet new people. Performing at Glastonbury for the first time was such a thrill for me and given me an appetite to do new things in the UK. I know these shows are going to be very special.” Eden Marketing Director Rita Broe said: “What a massive honour it is to announce that the legend Lionel Richie will headline at the Eden Sessions next summer! His 30 years of hits have been like a soundtrack to many of our lives. Hearing him perform those hits for the first time in Cornwall, against the backdrop of biomes, will be incredible – and what a way to start the Sessions season! Much dancing on the celling ahead!” The Eden Sessions enter their fifteenth year in 2016. Last year saw the legendary Elton John play two consecutive headline shows. The other 2015 Eden Sessions were headlined by Paolo Nutini, Paloma Faith, Motorhead and Ben Howard. Eden’s Inside Track club returns for 2016. Passes cost £15 and give holders the option to buy two tickets for each Eden Session seven days before they go on general sale. E C N A D R RIVE Live Nation is proud to announce that the Riverdance UK Tour of 2016, which marks the show’s 21st birthday, will visit 13 venues across the UK from March 2016. Tickets will go on general sale at 0900 on Friday 2 October 2015 from www.livenation.co.uk or www. ticketmaster.co.uk.
The cast for this tour will feature, for the first time, some dancers who were actually born in the same year that the show first opened; 1995 at the Point Theatre in Dublin! This is an unmissable chance for UK audiences to reconnect with what the Irish Times rightly described as “The Original...The Best”. The Washington Post exclaimed, “Its continued popularity proves that it was, and remains, a phenomenon of historic proportions!” Composed by Bill Whelan, Produced by Moya Doherty and Directed by John McColgan, Riverdance has performed across the UK where it has been experienced by over 2.9 million
14
people in well over 1000 performances and the show has lost none of its magic. The worldwide TV audience for Riverdance is in excess of 2 billion people.
Producer Moya Doherty said, “Twenty one years after the curtains opened on the first show in 1995, we are proud to be still performing all around the world. We always look forward to our dates in the UK and these shows are sure to be very special. To celebrate our anniversary we have enhanced the production with new lighting, new costumes and a new number. The best of Riverdance with new energy from a stunning young cast of dancers many of whom were not yet born when the show started!” Riverdance has received rave reviews globally but perhaps the simplicity of The Guardian’s verdict sums it up: “Dance does not often get so good”. Riverdance is a celebration of Irish dance and culture, presented with sophistication and

vibrancy.” The Hollywood Reporter acclaimed, “The sort of spectacle and experience that comes along once in a lifetime.” This series of dates in 2016 represent a chance for UK Riverdance fans old and new to celebrate
an incredible milestone for an incredible show. Twenty one years after the show first opened, a truly phenomenal piece of theatrical entertainment is back by popular demand. Truly, Riverdance has come of age!

What’s On Magazine
Artist of the Year!
The High Kings Congratulations to the High Kings for being awarded “What’s On Magazine’s” Artist of the Year. Every year at What’s On you can imagine the amount of bands and artists that we see and review is huge. The criteria for this accolade is based on many factors, audience interaction, atmosphere, musical ability, performance and camaraderie within the group which in most bands is the missing instrument. The quality of The High Kings live shows are outstanding and from the whole concept to creation for a brilliant evening is when the band can play to the audience not to themselves. Also the ability to captivate a crowd in the smallest bar to the largest stadium. The High Kings have all this in abundance and more. These guys are without doubt one of the most compelling acts I have ever seen from the Emerald Isle. A close second to 4 boys from Mount Temple Comprehensive School Dublin! In my honest opinion everybody who comes to a High Kings gig feels that bit better about life and themselves upon hearing their music and the profound depth and fun it brings. Congratulations to the High Kings! What’s On Magazine Artist of the Year! After a blinding sold out performance at The Phoenix Exeter South Devon. Here is a little insight into this incredible collection of Irish Gentlemen. The High Kings are an Irish folk group formed in Dublin in 2008 by Celtic Woman manager Dave Kavanagh. The band consists of Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden.
By February 2015, the group had released three studio albums, two live albums, and two live DVDs. All of their studio albums appeared at number three or higher on the Billboard world music chart the first two went platinum in Ireland, and all their albums charted in Ireland. After the release of their first album, the new group moved from a highly staged format to a more natural performance style. Since the inception of the band, The High Kings have toured Ireland, the United States, and Europe on multiple occasions. Together they play thirteen instruments during their performances. The group’s motto is “Folk ‘n Roll,” and their singing is especially noted for its close harmonies. The band has spent the majority of 2015 touring in the USA and their most recent Tour was a sell-out coast-to-coast. In September, The High Kings joined the ranks of the very few Artists to perform live in The Pentagon, in Washington D.C. as special guests to the retiring Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E. Dempsey, who is a huge fan of the band. Speaking from their Dublin HQ, Brian Dunphy from the band said ‘2015 was a hugely significant year for us in the USA, but there is no question that our Irish and UK fans hold a very dear place in our hearts, and we are looking forward to seeing each and every one of them, young and old, in December and January’. For future UK and Ireland dates and to buy Four Friends Live CD and DVD visit the bands official website. Tickets for all shows, merchandise and music are on sale now.

o u Q s u t Sta In their 6th decade, ‘Accept No Substitute’ 3CD and 2DVD releases announced & UK Tour
Status Quo are delighted to announce two career retrospective releases, a 3CD collection entitled ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’, and a 2DVD set entitled, ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’. Both will be released on 20th November 2015 through Universal Music. A 2LP vinyl version will also be made available. The Amazon PreOrder link is http://po.st/QUO On the ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’ 3CD release, for the first time ever, all of the eras across six decades that make up the incredible career of this truly seminal British act are presented together. Drawing a line through from the earliest days, right up until the present time, this is an in depth journey through time. ‘Accept No Substitute’ is a treasure trove of hits, certainly, but also finds space for tracks that provide a narrative of the band’s story.
52
Featuring more than fifty tracks from twenty three of the band’s studio albums, as well as single versions of some key songs and live recordings, this collection offers all the hits and more. ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’ 2DVD offers a vast collection of the promotional videos for a swath of Quo classics, plus some extra special moments from throughout the years – and also some previously unseen material. This is a visual archive that really shows the band at their best. With material drawn from numerous sources, and of course eras, this DVD release is something special. For Quo fans it’s unmissable. Breaking into the big time in 1968, Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan ground out the miles on their relentless tours, bringing their sound and their songs to an ever-growing
army of fans. Quo’s path was never easy, with personnel changes leaving just Rossi and Parfitt at the core of the group. A triumphant set at Live Aid in 1985 steadied the ship and the band have gone on, from strength to strength. Album followed album, tour followed tour. The band, now consisting of Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andy Bown (since ’76), John ‘Rhino’ Edwards (1986) and Leon Cave (2013) continue to bring their music to the fans.
up until the present day. When in March 2013 the ‘Frantic Four’ line-up of Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster and Coghlan reformed, grown men cried with joy, and live tracks are included here. The tracklisting finishes with material from the last studio album ‘Aquostic (Stripped Bare)’ in 2014. Here, the band showed not only a mellower side but also the sheer musicianship and melody within their work, underlining the fact that these songs have stood the test of time.
‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’ is the song that bookends the CD tracklisting and truly charts the band’s trajectory. Opening with the early psychedelic flourish that first made their name, and finishing with the ‘Aquostic’ version, it’s been quite a ride. That early sound quickly became the trademark no nonsense driving rock of the Seventies as the band created a series of stone cold classic rock albums. ‘Piledriver’ [72] was the record that blasted them into the upper reaches of the album charts and set the scene for a truly purple patch; the band’s next 12 albums would each crack the Top 10. As the decades rolled by, Quo went on delivering hit after hit right
‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’ and ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’ collate and define the Quo legacy. These landmark releases serve to collect, document and celebrate the output of one of the world’s most loved and influential rock acts. Status Quo are on tour in the UK in December 2015 – check their website http://www. statusquo.co.uk/ for more information and to book tickets

Rod Stewart Heads to Plymouth in UK Hits 2016 Tour New Album ‘Another Country’ out October 30th Fresh from his triumphant Hyde Park Radio 2 show where he played to more than 50,000 people, and after releasing a brand new studio album ’Another Country’, Rod Stewart announced an eight date UK stadium tour which will include a concert at Plymouth Argyle FC’s Home Park stadium, on Tuesday June 7. Plymouth Argyle chief executive Martyn Starnes said: “On behalf of Britain’s Ocean City, the football club is delighted to welcome Rod Stewart back to Home Park and to the West Country. “Rod’s previous triumphant concert at the stadium is still remembered by those who packed the ground to hear him then, and we are sure that demand for tickets this time will reflect the expectation of what is sure to be another sensational Plymouth night.” The fully seated outdoor tour is being presented by Cuffe and Taylor whose director Peter Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be working with Rod Stewart and his team yet again. In 2014 we worked on three dates and I am delighted we are the sole promoter of the Rod Stewart Stadium Tour for 2016. “The venues stretch right across the UK giving tens of thousands of people the opportunity to see one of the best live acts in the world. It is great that all but two of the venues are new to Rod Stewart and we are confident there will be a lot of excitement as summer approaches.”
With his singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has built one of the most successful and enduring music careers of all time. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has amassed sales of more than 200 million albums and singles worldwide. Throughout his career Rod’s garnered two inductions into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, won a Grammy, the ASCAP Founders Award for songwriting, and in 2007 was bestowed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen. The new album ‘Another Country’ is coproduced by Rod and Kevin Savigar and is released 30th October. It follows the huge success of 2012’s ‘Time’ which entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, setting a new British record for the longest gap between charttopping albums by an artist - while in the US, it marked Stewart’s highest-charting album of original material since 1979. In 2012, Stewart became a New York Times Bestselling author with the release of his autobiography ‘Rod’. Rod Stewart plays at PLYMOUTH ARGYLE, Home Park on Tuesday 7th June and tickets are on sale now. For a full list of tour dates and more information check out the website www.rodstewart.com
