News from the mayors office Gordon Oliver and his team have been chosen by voters in Torbay to lead Torbay ahead for the next five years. Gordon was born educated and trained in Torbay, his whole career being in local business mostly running a property management and estate agency business. He has been actively involved in local business and voluntary organisations throughout his life and has a passionate interest in the history of Torbay. For many years Gordon represented Torbay on Devon County Council gaining a wealth of valuable Local Government experience in senior Council appointments. With this team of Conservative Councillors he will deliver his “Conservative Promise” to the voters of Torbay, to provide: l Value for Money l Sympathetic Regeneration l A Boost to Local Employment l A Cleaner, Greener Bay l Safety in the Bay

Gordon has made two personal pledges to the people of Torbay, l To use half of the mayoral

remuneration to create a £30,000 fund to provide grants to voluntary organisations – supporting the Big Society.

English Riviera Global Geopark Geo-Collective Visit Canada A group of artists known as the Geo-Collective and three young people from the Bay visited the bi-annual UNESCO Global Geoparks Conference in Stonehammer, Canada, thanks to a successful bid by Torbay Council for Arts Council funding. Whilst in Canada, the group shared their music and ideas inspired by the English Riviera Geopark - with young people in schools and delegates at the conference from all around the world. They began to collect ideas to inform a new geologicalinspired piece of music to compose on their return. The contacts made and information gathered will be used to create a large-scale piece of work for September 2016 when Torbay hopes to be hosting the next International UNESCO conference on Global Geoparks. All the delegates and young people will be given a newly designed English Riviera Geopark temporary tattoo. The aim is to send everyone back to the four corners of the world to tell their friends, families and colleagues about the GeoCollective and the English Riviera Global Geopark. Torbay Council’s Executive Lead for Culture and the Arts, Councillor Dave Butt said: ‘This was an incredible opportunity for our young people to visit Canada showcasing their talent and make contacts with the Geopark Community. “Torbay is optimistic about winning the bid to host the next international Geopark conference in 2016, and I hope that this trip further adds to our campaign in demonstrating the enthusiasm and passion for the English Riviera Geopark held by our local young people.”

more transparent and democratic

The trip is the next stage of the council’s Geo-Opera project, following the success of this year’s Opera Mash-Up project, which saw 20 young local people performing a newly composed piece ‘Falling’ at the Princess Theatre alongside Welsh National Opera in July.

“ I believe passionately in Community involvement and see this as the way forward to ensure local people are involved in local matters”

Anyone interested in being involved in the next stage of the Geo-Opera project please should visit www.doorsteparts.co.uk and the English Riviera Global Geopark website at: www.englishrivierageopark.org.uk

Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Situated within Dartmoor National Park, in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well marked pathways take you to three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our fern garden at the top of the Falls is a hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, dragonflies and our new pair of black swans, Margot and Rudolph. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner near the lakes where they busy away making delicious honey. Everything is done on site and it is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area, offers rock hold walls, fireman`s pole and pull up ramps, go below deck underneath the platforms and create a den, so gather up your treasure chests ‘me hearties’ and let’s set sail. You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and items available from our shop. Café Our menu offers locally made pasties, hearty homemade soups, ploughmans, freshly cut sandwiches and jacket potatoes. A wonderful feast for the weary and hungry walkers! Also, why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our gorgeous cakes or perhaps a Traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk. The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely to have been the milking parlour! We supply a range of unusual and imaginative gifts, many of which are made locally including pottery, woodturned platters, jewellery, pretty scarves, colourful bags, ornaments, wooden gifts and toys for children along with. gorgeous scented, handmade soaps. Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls jute bags, aprons, peg bags, tea towels and oven gloves. Also, delicious Devon made jams and chutneys, cookies, and a selection of fudges from all over the West Country are available, and not forgetting the wonderful range of ‘Willie`s Cacao’ chocolate also made locally: delicious

Dartmoor N At 368 square miles (954 square kilometres), Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England. It has wild open moorland, granite tors and wooded river valleys. At its edge is a landscape of small fields enclosed by stone walls and hedge banks. The open spaces and sheltered valleys give pleasure to millions of people every year. Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves and mines are among habitats of international importance. Dartmoor’s landscape is also among the richest in western Europe in terms of its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world (measuring 3.4km). In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and the remains of over 5000 prehistoric hut circles (houses) can be seen. Dartmoor has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks. The National Park Visitor Centre at Postbridge has a superb collection of prehistoric finds on display as part of an exhibition telling the story of

life death and landscape on prehistoric Dartmoor. This year prehistoric Dartmoor comes to the city with a major exhibition of the most important archaeological discovery ever made on the moor. The Early Bronze Age burial discovered on Whitehorse Hill contained a wealth of important finds including jewellery and organic remains and all will be on display at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery from 13 September to 13 December 2014. The newly refurbished and updated National Park Visitor Centre in Princetown has a superb free to enter exhibition area where you can find out about the National Park and discover more about the building’s connection with Conan Doyle and how he was inspired to write the Hound of the Baskervilles. Try out the new Sherlock Holmes interactive display, watch stunning films and learn about Dartmoor’s myths and legends. Dartmoor is used for a wide range of exhilarating, exciting and challenging

After Midnight

AFTER MIDNIGHT are the World’s No1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band featuring front-man Mike Hall. The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne long before the term “tribute band” was invented, and named themselves ‘’After Midnight’’ after Eric Clapton’s first solo hit. Their ability to re-create Clapton’s electrifying stage performances really caught the audience’s imagination. In guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, the band possesses a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too! In 1999, Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds, London. Mike has met Slowhand twice, and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu). Playing a set of nearly two hours of Classic Clapton - This is a must for all “Slowhand” fans
