E C E N C A N D A R E D V I R RRIVE Live Nation is proud to announce that the Riverdance UK Tour of 2016, which marks the show’s 21st birthday, will visit 13 venues across the UK from March 2016. Tickets will go on general sale at 0900 on Friday 2 October 2015 from www.livenation.co.uk or www. ticketmaster.co.uk. The cast for this tour will feature, for the first time, some dancers who were actually born in the same year that the show first opened; 1995 at the Point Theatre in Dublin! This is an unmissable chance for UK audiences to reconnect with what the Irish Times rightly described as “The Original...The Best”. The Washington Post exclaimed, “Its continued popularity proves that it was, and remains, a phenomenon of historic proportions!” Composed by Bill Whelan, Produced by Moya Doherty and Directed by John McColgan, Riverdance has performed across the UK where it has been experienced by over 2.9 million

people in well over 1000 performances and the show has lost none of its magic. The worldwide TV audience for Riverdance is in excess of 2 billion people.

Producer Moya Doherty said, “Twenty one years after the curtains opened on the first show in 1995, we are proud to be still performing all around the world. We always look forward to our dates in the UK and these shows are sure to be very special. To celebrate our anniversary we have enhanced the production with new lighting, new costumes and a new number. The best of Riverdance with new energy from a stunning young cast of dancers many of whom were not yet born when the show started!” Riverdance has received rave reviews globally but perhaps the simplicity of The Guardian’s verdict sums it up: “Dance does not often get so good”. Riverdance is a celebration of Irish dance and culture, presented with sophistication and

vibrancy.” The Hollywood Reporter acclaimed, “The sort of spectacle and experience that comes along once in a lifetime.” This series of dates in 2016 represent a chance for UK Riverdance fans old and new to celebrate

o u Q s u t Sta In their 6th decade, ‘Accept No Substitute’ 3CD and 2DVD releases announced & UK Tour

Status Quo are delighted to announce two career retrospective releases, a 3CD collection entitled ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’, and a 2DVD set entitled, ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’. Both will be released on 20th November 2015 through Universal Music. A 2LP vinyl version will also be made available. The Amazon PreOrder link is http://po.st/QUO On the ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’ 3CD release, for the first time ever, all of the eras across six decades that make up the incredible career of this truly seminal British act are presented together. Drawing a line through from the earliest days, right up until the present time, this is an in depth journey through time. ‘Accept No Substitute’ is a treasure trove of hits, certainly, but also finds space for tracks that provide a narrative of the band’s story.

14

Featuring more than fifty tracks from twenty three of the band’s studio albums, as well as single versions of some key songs and live recordings, this collection offers all the hits and more. ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’ 2DVD offers a vast collection of the promotional videos for a swath of Quo classics, plus some extra special moments from throughout the years – and also some previously unseen material. This is a visual archive that really shows the band at their best. With material drawn from numerous sources, and of course eras, this DVD release is something special. For Quo fans it’s unmissable. Breaking into the big time in 1968, Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan ground out the miles on their relentless tours, bringing their sound and their songs to an ever-growing

army of fans. Quo’s path was never easy, with personnel changes leaving just Rossi and Parfitt at the core of the group. A triumphant set at Live Aid in 1985 steadied the ship and the band have gone on, from strength to strength. Album followed album, tour followed tour. The band, now consisting of Francis Rossi, Rick Parfitt, Andy Bown (since ’76), John ‘Rhino’ Edwards (1986) and Leon Cave (2013) continue to bring their music to the fans.

up until the present day. When in March 2013 the ‘Frantic Four’ line-up of Rossi, Parfitt, Lancaster and Coghlan reformed, grown men cried with joy, and live tracks are included here. The tracklisting finishes with material from the last studio album ‘Aquostic (Stripped Bare)’ in 2014. Here, the band showed not only a mellower side but also the sheer musicianship and melody within their work, underlining the fact that these songs have stood the test of time.

‘Pictures of Matchstick Men’ is the song that bookends the CD tracklisting and truly charts the band’s trajectory. Opening with the early psychedelic flourish that first made their name, and finishing with the ‘Aquostic’ version, it’s been quite a ride. That early sound quickly became the trademark no nonsense driving rock of the Seventies as the band created a series of stone cold classic rock albums. ‘Piledriver’ [72] was the record that blasted them into the upper reaches of the album charts and set the scene for a truly purple patch; the band’s next 12 albums would each crack the Top 10. As the decades rolled by, Quo went on delivering hit after hit right

‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits’ and ‘Accept No Substitute: The Definitive Hits & More’ collate and define the Quo legacy. These landmark releases serve to collect, document and celebrate the output of one of the world’s most loved and influential rock acts. Status Quo are on tour in the UK in December 2015 – check their website http://www. statusquo.co.uk/ for more information and to book tickets

Album of the Year Martin Turner – Founding Original Member of Wishbone Ash –

Written in the Stars Martin Turner – founding original member of WISHBONE ASH and lead vocalist, bassist and key creative force on iconic album releases such as “Argus”, “Pilgrimage”, “There’s the Rub” and “New England” – returns with this long-awaited studio collection of new compositions.

having an authentic progressive feel which Martin has become known for from day dot. Expect to find the signature guitar harmonies and the real infusion of musical styles such as blues and folk with a new age feel. Track by track review.

Written and recorded with Turner’s touring musicians and other collaborators, “Written in the Stars” follows a critically acclaimed period of worldwide live activity. Turner’s present live band consists of Danny Willson (guitar/vocals), Misha Nikolic (guitar/vocals) and Tim Brown (drums/ vocals). Turner describes this new album as “a guitar- based set of songs which represents an extension of the Wishbone Ash legacy, with an emphasis on the melodic qualities that the classic line-ups of the band were known for.” I was looking forward to receiving a copy of this album as it’s not every day you get the chance to review work from such an iconic artist as Martin laced with a rich musical history going back over four decades. ‘Written in the Stars’ has an astronomy theme which is carried throughout the whole album. You could almost say a concept album – which is a rarity these days. The album features a crescendo of musical styles and emotions whilst still

THE BIG BANG (OVERTURE) Instrumental A shooting star of a song – a haunting melody full of powerful emotions and dynamics which leads onto the beauty of chaos, with windy guitars and Martin’s unmistakable base line. THE BEAUTY OF CHAOS Instrumental This song jumps into the blue almost like going from black and white to colour, minor to major, with shooting stars flying all over the mix. The guitars sit really well with a 17

great acoustic undercoat. If you play this track loud enough I am sure you would actually take off. WRITTEN IN THE STARS The title track ‘Written in the Stars’ is without question one of my favourite songs on the album. Straight into Wishbone’s signature twin guitar harmonies and the vocal on this track is probably the most sympathetic to the true core of the Wishbone sound. The harmonics and down strokes of the guitar with heavy harmonised vocal works beautifully – a cosmic work of art! LOVERS Lovers has a very melancholy feel yet again an acoustic driven tune. A song that keeps the kindred spirit of a loved one lost. We are a love song without an ending. To me it has a very American feel to it still a great song! VAPOUR TRAIL Yet another song which starts with a very Latin American feel to it. Almost about to burst into Flamenco with beautiful harmonies and excellent guitar work with an acoustic foundation. THE LONELY STAR Instrumental This is the intergalactic Parisian walkways with guitar harmonies piercing all over this song with a smooth jaded feel. An instrumental which I find takes you on a real journey. Sometimes in music it’s what you don’t play that makes the killer difference. FOR MY LADY A beautiful song – the space from the guitars has that Walking on the Moon vibe. PRETTY LITTLE GIRLS One of the edgiest songs on the album which was born to be played loud. Another song that to me has an American feel – kind of Jimmy Ray Vaughan vibe. The chorus crashing through the verse in true progressive style. 18

FALLING SANDS A tidy little tune confirming Martin’s ability to take a ride or trip within a song, a dream within a dream – possibly the most easy listening track on the album. MYSTIFY ME One of my favourites on the album featuring great guitar work from Danny and Misha. If you could bottle that sound you could create your own Wishbone condiment that you could sprinkle over everything musically. Mystify Me, Pacify Me, Take me to your King, Let me see the darker side of you. INTERSTELLAR ROCKSTAR Without question one of the most beautiful songs on the album. Originally written and composed by Mark Emery and Ivan Jewel. The perfect song to end the album. As with The Big Bang – these two songs book end the album perfectly. Interstellar is a very haunting almost spiritual song. Melodies of beauty ring out is true to the word. A great guitar solo to end this album. Mark also produced the album with Martin and I can’t really fault any of it. The track selection couldn’t be better. The theme and dynamics are noticeable from the start – you can just feel how much work has gone into this collection of songs. All this album would need is David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and I don’t think you could find a better collection of songs to have that intergalactic feel. I hope everyone who worked on this project is absolutely over the moon with the results (no pun intended). I dearly look forward to hearing these songs played live – congratulations to all concerned. Exeter Racecourse is chomping at the bit for when jump racing action returns to Haldon Hill on Thursday, October 8 and to celebrate the racecourse has teamed up with SouthDevon-based trainer Martin Hill to offer racegoers the chance to win a share in a racehorse. The competition is open to anyone who prebooks to attend either race meeting on October 8 or October 20. Anyone who signs up to the Exeter Racecourse e-newsletter will also be entered into the competition and the winner will be drawn at the racecourse on October 20. Terms and conditions apply to the competition. With the roar of England rugby fans set to resonate across the length and breadth of the country with the World Cup Rugby taking place, the racecourse is also offering anyone who has a ticket to watch any qualifying matches halfpriced entry to the races - simply bring along your ticket. The second meeting of the season takes place on Tuesday October 20 with the Best Mate Novice Chase the feature race of the day. The race is named after the legendary three-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate who still holds a place close to peoples’ hearts despite passing away ten years ago. Tuesday, November 3 is when the Haldon Gold Cup is staged and it’s a day not to be missed. It’s run over two miles one furlong and spectacular leaps are guaranteed as the horses jump the fences at the quickest pace feasible in jump racing. There have been some stunning winners in the past - Cue Card, Best Mate, Edredon Bleu

and Viking Flagship to name a few - and some brilliant horses who have lined up but failed to land the spoils including 2005 runner Kauto Star, the greatest racehorse of our era. On our mid-November raceday on November 11 we will be holding a two minutes silence as a tribute to all those who have lost their lives fighting for their country. This will happen at midday, rather than the traditional 11am, to enable racegoers to participate. Racing on this day is typically filled with excitement too with many top young horses coming under starters’ orders. The racecourse’s renowned Devon Day, on November 22, the famous Clydesdale horses take centre stage. Their thundering hooves and flying feathers look set to really capture imaginations as they race down Exeter’s home straight with professional jockeys on board. A fund raiser for the Devon Air Ambulance, racegoers can become a Clydesdale owner for the day (just get in touch with the racecourse and we will give you the details) and enjoy the experience of standing in the paddock, chatting to jockeys and enjoying the Owners’ and Trainers’ Bar. Devon is renowned for its food and drink and you’ll be able to buy from various stands too. Make your Christmas party extra special and combine it with a day at the races with two December meetings – on Friday 4 and Thursday 17. You could book a table in the Desert Orchid Restaurant or entertain your guests in a private box. Whatever option you choose, you’ll enjoy a wonderful experience at Exeter

Shopro - Open for Business! Innovation, of course, is as old as time. But what feels different about today is the range and number of individuals and companies that are upending business models around the world. Whether it is the plethora of social media or the advances in technology that have transformed the way we order clothes, the latest film or a taxi. The disrupters are everywhere. Disruption is typically destructive, forcing companies out of business and, often, people out of jobs. But disruption also presents huge opportunities — for consumers, for the disrupters themselves, and for other companies as new techniques become available to all.

“We have seen an explosion in online and mobile technology aimed at the residential market over the past 15 years but this has not filtered down to other types of property. Offices, warehouses, shops and land are all marketed by a plethora of different agencies and formats. Somewhere along the lines, the user has been forgotten while online sites clamber for business that cater to the largest most powerful agents”

Rod Stewart Heads to Plymouth in UK Hits 2016 Tour New Album ‘Another Country’ out October 30th Fresh from his triumphant Hyde Park Radio 2 show where he played to more than 50,000 people, and after releasing a brand new studio album ’Another Country’, Rod Stewart announced an eight date UK stadium tour which will include a concert at Plymouth Argyle FC’s Home Park stadium, on Tuesday June 7. Plymouth Argyle chief executive Martyn Starnes said: “On behalf of Britain’s Ocean City, the football club is delighted to welcome Rod Stewart back to Home Park and to the West Country. “Rod’s previous triumphant concert at the stadium is still remembered by those who packed the ground to hear him then, and we are sure that demand for tickets this time will reflect the expectation of what is sure to be another sensational Plymouth night.” The fully seated outdoor tour is being presented by Cuffe and Taylor whose director Peter Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be working with Rod Stewart and his team yet again. In 2014 we worked on three dates and I am delighted we are the sole promoter of the Rod Stewart Stadium Tour for 2016. “The venues stretch right across the UK giving tens of thousands of people the opportunity to see one of the best live acts in the world. It is great that all but two of the venues are new to Rod Stewart and we are confident there will be a lot of excitement as summer approaches.”

With his singular voice, narrative songwriting and passionate live performances, Rod Stewart has built one of the most successful and enduring music careers of all time. In a career spanning more than five decades, he has amassed sales of more than 200 million albums and singles worldwide. Throughout his career Rod’s garnered two inductions into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, won a Grammy, the ASCAP Founders Award for songwriting, and in 2007 was bestowed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by the Queen. The new album ‘Another Country’ is coproduced by Rod and Kevin Savigar and is released 30th October. It follows the huge success of 2012’s ‘Time’ which entered the UK Albums Chart at No. 1, setting a new British record for the longest gap between charttopping albums by an artist - while in the US, it marked Stewart’s highest-charting album of original material since 1979. In 2012, Stewart became a New York Times Bestselling author with the release of his autobiography ‘Rod’. Rod Stewart plays at PLYMOUTH ARGYLE, Home Park on Tuesday 7th June and tickets are on sale now. For a full list of tour dates and more information check out the website www.rodstewart.com

Conducted by Christopher Fletcher

Elijah is a particular favourite of amateur choral societies. Its melodrama, easy appeal and stirring choruses have provided the basis for countless successful performances. Elijah has many outstanding qualities: imaginative orchestration, spontaneity of the counterpoint, dramatic impetus, and the sheer beauty of many of the arias and choruses. Above all, there is no mistaking the work’s considerable dramatic impact, epitomised by the vivid characterisation of Elijah himself. The concert is being held at Plymouth Guildhall, Armada Way, PL1 2AD
