South Devon Link Road Project The South Devon Link Road is a 5.5km dual carriageway, which will provide the long awaited bypass for Kingskerswell. The road will bypass the existing A380 between Newton Abbot and Torbay. Currently under construction, the major new road is scheduled to be complete by December 2015. The project was granted full approval by the government in May 2012 and work began in the autumn. The improved access to Torbay and South Devon is

expected to bring lasting economic benefits, leading to the creation of nearly 8,000 jobs in South Devon, with around 3,500 of these in Torbay. It is predicted that the new road will remove 95% of traffic away from Kingskerswell, restoring and revitalising the village.

The A380 between Penn Inn, Newton Abbot and Kerswell Gardens, Torquay is one of the most choked up and heavily used roads in the region, carrying over 35,000 vehicles a day. Running to the west of the existing A380 and bypassing Kingskerswell, the South Devon Link Road will provide a safer, less

congested and faster route for through traffic, with the existing road remaining to provide a quieter route for local traffic, buses, cyclists and pedestrians. This edition provides an update on what’s been happening over the winter and news about forthcoming phases.

Militaryboats Experience @ Torquay’s Inner Harbour

Looking for something to do in Torquay, South Devon?? Dive into the incredible history of Britain’s small attack craft on board these lovingly restored “little ships” Come and visit our fleet of ex-military fast attack craft. We have Gay Archer, a Royal Navy Fast Patrol motor torpedo boat; Humorist, a Royal Army Service Corps Derby Winners class transport launch and ST437, our Royal Air Force Sea Plane Tender Air Sea Rescue launch. Take this unique opportunity to come on board, look around and experience what it was like to defend Britain’s waters with guns, torpedoes and depth charges on these small

but powerful ex-military boats. Explore (and smell!) the engine rooms, sit on the Bofors gun, feel the uniforms and hear the stories of our waterborne Veterans. A great chance to experience real British history for the whole family. P1041 - Gay Archer First of the Military Boats Gay Archer was the first of twelve Gay Class Boats ordered by the Royal Navy and built by Vospers in Portchester. The Gay class was a ‘short’ (23m, 75ft check) class of Fast Patrol Boats, so called because they could be easily converted from motor torpedo boats to motor gun boats; and they were very fast – pulling 40 knots when at full speed.

She is made of double diagonal Honduras mahogany which was felled in 1937; and cost £127,000 to build, with inflation this is equivalent to about £2.2 million in 2012. She was launched on 20th August 1952 and entered service as an RN Fast Patrol Boat numbered P 1041. The FPBs main defensive advantage was their speed and agility to attack either by gun or by launching surface torpedoes. She was also equipped with Depth Charges and flare rocket launches to illuminate the enemy. Humorist Come and see a restoration in progress, rebuilding the original features… Humorist is one of 23 Derby Winners Class boats designed and built by JS Whites, Isle of Wight. They were ordered by the Army in 1940, Humorist was finally launched in 1943. Like Gay Archer she is built of double diagonal Honduras mahogany with copper rivets and bronze screws, but only has a semi-planing hull as opposed

to Gay Archer’s fully planing hull. She was also sealed with a calico layer waterproofed with white lead paste. ST 437 Beautifully maintained with her original engines… Sea Plane Tender 437 was built by the British Powerboat Company in Hythe and launched in July 1941. She was a development of a prototype which had been designed by Hubert Scott Payne of the British Power Boat Company and RAF Aircraftman T.E. Shaw – a pseudonym for the famous Lawrence of Arabia. “In the June/July edition of What’s On South Devon Magazine – on Page 35 next to the Torbay Towns advertisement for Paignton, under the heading “Events” it read ‘Brought to you by the businesses of Paignton Town Centre’. This was incorrect and should not have been included. There are a great many individuals and organisations involved in organising and promoting events in Paignton and we are grateful to them for pointing this out to us. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by the above statement. Jamie Sinclair – Publisher, What’s On Publications”

Torre Abbey

Historic House and Gardens The Cary family had previously lived here in style, from 1840 they fell on hard times and could no longer keep the Abbey in good repair. In 1930 the family sold the property to the local Council, who turned it into an art gallery with a hospitality suite for the mayor in the south-east wing. The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it housed 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The Barn is currently used for functions, such as weddings, and exhibitions. Torre Abbey Historic House is an accredited museum owned by Torbay Council. It has one of the largest art collections in the southwest which is rich in 19th century paintings and sculptures. Browse the shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events. A varied programme of events takes place at Torre Abbey throughout the year. Tours of the house are available out of hours to groups of 30 or more.

Beaches are great places to have fun but please take care and read the following information, here are some simple rules to keep you safe. Please read all of the safety signs!

Great Local Beaches

On the beach and in the water Observe high and low tides – will the beach be there? Take care of sharp objects/litter hidden in the sand Also slippery rocks/big drops from cliffs and harbour walls. Rip currents/dumping waves – they could drag you out of your depth Look out for Jellyfish and Weeverfish, which can sting Offshore winds – don’t get blown out to sea Man-made structures like piers and groynes Other water users – swimmers don’t mix well with powerboats and Jet Ski’s! Children must be supervised at all times

If you see anyone else in trouble, alert the Lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Living Coasts

The Living Coasts Fantastic Fish Festival includes cooking demos by top local chefs, trails, aquarium talks, craft activities and dive shows. Living Coasts’ Clare Rugg: “Some fish species are part of our collection - others are food! Fish are amazing, vital, beautiful and useful. Fantastic Fish is a year-long event promoting sustainable fishing and a greater awareness of just how great fish are.”

The Big Fish Campaign is raising awareness about the problem of aquarium fish that grow larger than the vast majority of home aquaria can accommodate, and to promote responsible buying and selling of these larger species. The Fantastic Fish Festival, sponsored by Kingfisher Brixham, runs from Monday 28th July to Friday 1st August. For more information go to www.livingcoasts.org.uk. Meanwhile, penguins are popping up in shops and businesses around Torquay harbour. The cheeky six inch characters form a fun free trail that runs until the end of September – and it’s all thanks to Living Coasts.

Living Coasts is bursting with things to do inside and out right now. Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium is celebrating fish in all their forms this summer, with looking, learning – and lunching!

Hayley Gibson, from the zoo, explained: “Living Coasts is the home of the penguin, so it’s fitting for our trail to feature this fabulous little bird. The trail is free to enter - pick up a trail sheet from Living Coasts or any of the businesses taking part. Look for the posters displayed with the penguins. Each poster has a letter on it. When you have all the letters, find the phrase that they spell out and hand your answer in at Living Coasts. The prize is a Living Coasts penguin feeding experience.”

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is one of Britain’s leading zoos. The lush, hidden valley on the edge of Paignton is home to some of the planet’s rarest and most amazing animals and plants. All your favourites are here – lion, tiger, gorilla, orang utan, rhino and giraffe – along with more than a few surprises. Look out for two baby orang utans, young giraffes and a new male lion named Lucifer. Paignton Zoo is a full day for all the family, with restaurant, shops, takeaway kiosks, miniature train, indoor and outdoor play areas and interactive learning zones. In addition, as a registered charity the Zoo has a long history of education, scientific research and practical conservation – so your great day out is also a donation towards vital good causes! There’s a brilliant way of visiting both of the English Riviera’s zoos and saving money at the same time. It’s called a Zooper Ticket. The Zooper Ticket is a joint saver ticket for Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts. Available in person from either zoo or online at www.paigntonzoo.org.uk, the Zooper Ticket offers a 20% discount. You can visit each attraction once and it’s valid for 6 months, so there’s no rush. Zooper!

News from the Mayors Office Gordon Oliver and his team have been chosen by voters in Torbay to lead Torbay. Gordon was born educated and trained in Torbay, his whole career being in local business mostly running a property management and estate agency business. He has been actively involved in local business and voluntary organisations throughout his life and has a passionate interest in the history of Torbay.

Torbay organisations benefit from Mayor’s Fund grants.

For many years Gordon represented Torbay on Devon County Council gaining a wealth of valuable Local Government experience in senior Council appointments.

Torbay Mayor, Gordon Oliver presented 46 organisations with cheques at a ceremony in the Palace Hotel, Torquay in April 2014. They each received a share of £26,500 from the Torbay Mayor’s Fund, which was set up after Mayor Gordon Oliver pledged half his annual salary in each year of his four year term of office to give one off support to local groups, organisations and individuals.

With this team of Conservative Councillors he will deliver his “Conservative Promise” to the voters of Torbay, to provide: • Value for Money

Grants of up to £1000 have been allocated to 46 successful applicants to help them drive forward projects in their community.

• Sympathetic Regeneration • A Boost to Local Employment • A Cleaner, Greener Bay

Mr Oliver said: “Local groups do so much for their communities and I am proud to be able to support these hard working and committed people as well as the people they serve.

• Safety in the Bay Gordon has made two personal pledges to the people of Torbay, • To use half of the mayoral remuneration to create a £30,000 fund to provide grants to voluntary organisations supporting the Big Society. • Change the Mayoral system to be more transparent and democratic

I believe passionately in Community involvement and see this as the way forward to ensure local people are involved in local matters”

“I am pleased that there were so many worthwhile applicants for the Mayor’s Fund, which recognises the enormous contribution that local groups make to our community. I look forward to seeing how their projects progress throughout the year. “I would also like to thank our Cross party Group who helped administer the fund this year for all their hard work and organisational support” The Torbay’s Mayor’s Fund is administered by a cross-party panel of councillors - Nicole Amil, Jackie Stockman and Bobbie Davies.

In a joint statement the councillors said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this project. It is a difficult task studying and selecting the applications, because we know how important financial support is to many of these projects. “We would like to thank the Mayor for his generosity in giving half his salary to so many worthy initiatives and look forward to seeing the continuing benefits that the Mayor’s Fund brings to people’s lives in the Bay.”

Torbay selected by UK Government as part of Assisted Area Status map

to improve the local economy and attract and retain jobs and investment.

Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver said: “I am delighted that the Government has recognised the enormous potential in Torbay and has included Blatchcombe, Shiphay and Tormohun in the Assisted Area Status map.

TDA Chief Executive Steve Parrock said: “Designation of Assisted Area Status is testament to the Mayor of Torbay and the TDA’s success in driving home the message both regionally and nationally in public and private sectors that Torbay has much potential as a place to invest.

“This is great news for the whole of Torbay and is testament to the effective partnership between Torbay Council, Torbay Development Agency (TDA) and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership (HOTSW) who have been lobbying together for recognition of these areas to leverage future funding.

“We look forward to continuing to work with our partners in Torbay Council, the LEP and local businesses to put forward robust bids to leverage additional funds to act as a catalyst for regeneration and deliver the benefits for the local community.”

Assisted Area status permits the granting of additional financial support to small businesses and large enterprises in economically disadvantaged locations. The support is to encourage businesses in these communities to grow, innovate and thrive; which will generate a positive effect locally and with wider benefits for the rest of the region and the UK economy as a whole. Assisted Area Status recognises the potential for growth, so whilst it is allocated to areas that are in some way “disadvantaged” they are only designated as assisted areas if the UK Government, followed by the European Union, is convinced that there is significant potential for business growth and that there are robust partnerships in place to address the challenges and drive economic regeneration. The UK is allowed by the EU to allocate a limited number of Assisted Areas; and Torbay Council, the TDA and HOSW LEP have been working together to lobby the UK and EU government to recognise the opportunities in Torbay to help these partnerships deliver the regeneration initiatives that are planned

Assisted Area Status has been awarded to a number of areas in North and South Devon, with a total of 9,658 businesses across Devon, Plymouth and Torbay potentially able to benefit from this announcement. The Heart of the South West Local Enterprise Partnership, which has been campaigning for several months to secure Assisted Area Status for these areas, warmly welcomed the announcement. Its Chief Executive, Chris Garcia, said: “This announcement is great news for our area. Until now, Devon has received much lower amounts of regional aid government assistance than comparable areas in the UK and we are delighted that the Government has agreed to support all our recommendations. “Inclusion in the Assisted Area Status map has huge benefits for the areas concerned. It permits the granting of addition financial support to both small businesses and large enterprises, enabling them, and the communities they support, to grow and become more prosperous.” For more information on Assisted Area Status visit https://www.gov.uk/ government/consultations/assisted-areasmap-2014-to-2020-stage-2

Stay safe splashing about at the beach Splashing, wading and paddling at the beach, a water park or a lake can be a real treat on a hot day. Swimming is a top activity with all ages and can be lots of fun, especially if the sun’s shining. But drowning is a real danger and even people who know how to swim can get into difficulties if they fail to take safety precautions. The British coast is spectacularly beautiful, rich in wildlife and hugely popular, attracting people from considerable distances to enjoy a range of recreational activities. But the seaside isn’t most people’s usual environment so it’s easy to miss some of the hazards, warns the RNLI. Rip currents and offshore winds can drag you out of your depth while jellyfish, sea anemones and weever fish can leave you with a seaside souvenir you didn’t bargain on. Peter Dawes, RNLI Head of Lifeguards, says: “We want people to have a safe and enjoyable time at the beach. The RNLI’s advice is to choose a lifeguarded beach if possible, and swim between the red and yellow flags. “We also advise people not to use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas - and never when the orange windsock is flying, as this indicates an offshore wind that could carry you out to sea. “If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help - and if you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.” The charity, which is funded

entirely by donations and run by volunteers, is hugely busy in holiday periods so is asking people to take precautions to cut unnecessary risks. One lifeboat sent out in Exmouth rescued a couple from an inflatable dinghy with no equipment - not even oars. Blackpool’s RNLI volunteers were kept busy too rescuing two inflatable boats which got into difficulty when strong offshore winds swept them away from the beach. Other rescues included people who had been cut off by the tide, dinghies taken out to sea by rip currents and a man clinging to one of the legs of a pier.

Summer at the National Trust English Riviera This summer at the National Trust English Riviera is set to be a festival of theatre and entertaining outdoor events, whatever the weather. With fantastic outdoor theatre performances lined up at three properties, as well as outdoor cinema for the first time ever at Greenway, there are ample opportunities to bring out your picnic baskets and settle down for an enjoyable evening. At Coleton Fishacre, the country home

of the D’Oyly Carte family (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame), Illyria are performing a fantastic adaptation of a Gilbert and Sullivan classic opera, ‘Pirates of Penzance’, on Sunday 20 July. At Coleton Fishacre there will also be a performance of ‘Treasure Island’ by The London Contemporary Theatre on Saturday 23 August; the sea views provide the perfect backdrop to this swashbuckling adventure.

At Greenway, the beloved holiday home of Agatha Christie on the banks of the River Dart, Heartbreak Productions are bringing to life two literary classics; ‘Pride and Prejudice’ on 31 July and ‘Peter Pan’ on 1 August. The Walled Garden is also set to be transformed into an outdoor cinema on 16 September, for a screening of Agatha Christie’s ‘Evil under the Sun’ starring Peter Ustinov exclusively for the Agatha Christie Festival.

the garden team have plans for the restoration of the knot garden, which is worth revisiting to see the progress made. Coleton Fishacre’s RHS accredited garden is always a joy, and at this time of year is filled with colour and thriving tender plants from New Zealand. Paths lead down through the garden to the South West Coast Path, where you can enjoy views of the tidal swimming pool built for the D’Oyly Carte family in Pudcombe Cove.

At Bradley Manor, the medieval gem in the heart of Newton Abbot, join the Lord Chamberlain’s Men this summer for the world’s greatest love story ‘Romeo and Juliet’ on

6 August. Bring along a deckchair and soak up this traditional, all-male cast performance of Shakespeare’s greatest love story in this evocative and atmospheric setting. The summer months are also perfect for exploring the ever-changing gardens of these charming places. Greenway’s romantic woodland garden, with views over the river, is the perfect place to catch a cool breeze on a warm day, or shelter from the rain amidst the tress on those less than sunny summer days. At Compton Castle near Paignton, the rose garden is at its best from June onwards, and

Above all at the National Trust English Riviera, this summer is about relaxing. With deckchairs overlooking the river at Greenway,

secluded spots in the garden at Bradley, picnic benches under the apple trees at Compton Castle and benches perched on the banks complete with sea views, you can always relax in style.
