The name Elt has been a by word for shoes in Worcester and the surrounding area for almost a century and a half. The family firm was founded by Albert Elt (photograph above) in 1872 when he took over the two businesses of his brothers Harold and David, locating his new store in the Shambles. In the Victorian tradition Albert had named his son Albert Edward, commonly known as Bert. With Ada his wife, they already had a shoe store in High Street, Worcester. When father Albert died in 1923, Bert and Ada took on the Shambles business. The premises they bought at that time had been the Old Market Tavern. Around this time Bert and Ada’s son Roy joined the business. After World War II, through Roy’s vision, the fairly mediocre Shambles premises were transformed into a

luxurious shoe store. This stood out conspicuously in a street populated mainly by Butchers, Fishmongers, Green Grocers, Pubs and two way traffic!! Success breeds success. Roy expanded into a new store in Malvern in 1948, followed by Stratford and Leominster in 1953 and 1966 respectively. Roy’s son Robin joined the business in 1964, which means to date he has had 53 years at the helm. Like father like son, Robin saw potential in other towns with a similar trading profile to Worcester and has since opened in Hereford, Ludlow, Pershore, Abergavenny Torquay and Totnes. All beautiful towns that are strong tourist destinations. Modern retailing requires that you remain alert to changing trading conditions. Witness the current boom in coffee shops, mobile phone shops and hairdressers! When Robin

Expires: 31st January 2018

took on the business, Worcester had no fewer than 16 stand-alone shoe shops. Now there are only 5 other shoe retailers – how times and the High Street change! Robin is extremely proud of the Shambles heritage where characterful neighbours included Pratleys China Shop, Maggs Clothing, Thompson’s Fish Store and Sigleys Sweet Shop, who have now sadly passed into history. When we took on Torquay in 1992, we acquired a very dressy business which over the years has evolved into what our store is now. We specialise in high quality men’s and ladies formal shoes but with a strong emphasis on casuals. We have had the Torquay shop for exactly 25 years this year. When we opened we had 17 competitors in the Bay as stand alone shoe stores - now we have two! We must be doing something right! Totnes 01803 847878 Torquay, St Marychurch 01803 327269

.... BUT THIS IS NO FAIRY STORY As Christmas approached Baron Hardup looked dejected. “Where can I take my family to see the best value for money pantomime in Torbay and how can I afford it?” he said to himself. Suddenly there was a flash of light and a beautiful Fairy Godmother appeared before him. “Go to the Palace Theatre in Paignton this Christmas and see everybody’s favourite pantomime Cinderella” she proclaimed. “The £45,000 production has a total cast of 40 with experienced principals, excellent dancers, babes and chorus together with a live five piece professional band. There is a very witty script for all your favourite Cinderella characters, lavish costumes, modern songs, sparkling dance routines and a special appearance of Bob the Bunny”. Baron Hardup sighed. “Is all this going to cost me a lot of money?” he said. The Fairy 52

Godmother laughed. “It will only cost the same as last year as all the seat prices have been held at 2016 prices with tickets starting at just £11. The pantomime runs from the 21st December 2017 to the 3rdJanuary 2018 and you can book by going to the Palace Theatre or telephoning 01803 665800.” Suddenly the Fairy Godmother looked thoughtful. “Last year over 4100 patrons saw the Paignton Pantomime Productions panto at the Palace and tickets will undoubtedly sell fast again this year so – DON’T DELAY – BOOK TODAY. NOW DON’T KEEP THIS TREAT TO YOURSELF – TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS – but book your own tickets first.” and with another flash of light she was gone. Baron Hardup smiled his first smile in ages, quickly reached for his mobile and tapped:

01803 665800.

Ten Years a King The High Kings celebrate 10th Anniversary with new album ‘Decade – The Best of the High Kings’ - out 3rd November 2017

…followed by an 18 month World Tour starting in Ireland in December. Marking ten years of great music, The High Kings release ‘Decade – The Best of The High Kings’ on 3rd November. Decade features fan favourites such as Rocky Road to Dublin, Marie’s Wedding and Spancil Hill as well as 5 brand new recordings. Ten years ago, The High Kings’ concert was broadcast on PBS stations across America and launched the band onto the music scene overnight. Their self-titled debut album quickly followed and reached an impressive No 2 in Billboard’s World Music Chart. Within months the four members– Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden – had clicked as a creative unit as well as friends and knew that they were embarking on something special.

To say that The High Kings are charting a new course for Irish ballad music – equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful – is an understatement. They are, essentially, marking out a new and bright era for Irish folk music. Ten years later, The High Kings have achieved what many had thought improbable, if not impossible: moving the Irish ballad tradition into the here and now. While Martin has sadly left the band, we are delighted to announce that Irish folk singer George Murphy will be joining The High Kings as a special guest on their forthcoming shows. George has a remarkable, unmistakable powerhouse of a voice; his familiar yet unique and magnetic tone is clear from the first note he sings.
