Distinctly Gin: An Unforgettable Experience Originating from Dartmouth Devon, The Distinctly Different Spirits Company creates Aromatic short run gins Under the ‘Distinctly’ Brand using locally sourced produce from areas close to Dartmouth and the River Dart. Fresh Locally Sourced Ingredients Our gin features 8 botanicals including coriander, lemon peel and liquorice but also balances its juniper against apples from Hunts Cider Orchards in Stoke Gabriel and elderflower from Greenway House gardens at Galmpton creating a very smooth, floral gin with big notes of apple and an aftertaste of elderflower whilst still holding onto to its juniper roots. At Distinctly Gin We have created a range of gins that nod to the juniper roots and yet taste of the real fruits of South Devon.
‘Tracing the journey of the River Dart we take our botanicals within a 07590 023 555 mile of the banks and offer up the very essence of the Southwest.’ sales@distinctlygin.com www.distinctlygin.com ‘Distinctly Gin Distilled in Devon’

The Rugglestone The Rugglestone is a traditional Dartmoor pub, complete with wooden beams, an oversized hearth with a roaring fire which burns year-round and a long history of coachmen and their antics. The food here is hearty and delicious – just what the doctor ordered after a long day in the great outdoors – and the beer garden is a pretty wisteria-clad backdrop, perfect for afternoon beers. Widecombe in the Moor, Newton Abbot, Devon. Tel: 01364 621327.
Cromwell Arms This award-winning pub which sits at the gateway to the Moors in Bovey Tracey is a comfortable and friendly spot for beer drinking. Rooms are available, and the food here is great, but, as a village pub, the atmosphere is second to none. Log burners keep the place toasty in the colder months, and the sunny lawn is popular in summer. Fore St, Bovey Tracey, Devon Tel: 01626 833473.
Plume of Feathers The Plume is Princetown’s oldest building, and it feels like it. But that’s not to say that that’s a bad thing. This traditional historic pub is perfectly placed for walkers, hikers and tourists in the area and is decked out in proper granite walls and wooden beams. The beer on tap is local and delicious, and the staff are very friendly. The Square, Princetown Tel: 01822 890240.
The Post Inn The Post is another one of those traditional Dartmoor pubs from the 16th century. It’s a formula that works well in these parts, and this pub is a warm welcome from the often hostile Dartmoor elements. There are tons of local ciders, beers and ales on tap, as well as a big menu which is sure to not leave a single soul hungry. Exeter Rd, Whiddon Down, Okehampton, Devon. Tel: 01647 231242.
Country Pub Guide
Bearslake Inn The Bearslake is what we call a real pub, and by that we mean that locals don’t even have to ask the bar staff for their next drink. The restaurant here is of exceptionally high quality, and a good selection of beers are available. Bearslake is believed to have once been a working farm that dates all the way back to the 13th century, so there’s a hell of a lot of history in these walls! Lake Sourton, Okehampton Tel: 01837 861334.
The Globe Inn The Globe’s life as a coach house started way back in the 1600s, and since then its role in the community hasn’t much changed. Of course, the building is now much warmer and the plumbing much more reliable, but some things just don’t change. Comforting home-cooked food comes out of the kitchen, and the two well-stocked bars all serve the finest local tipples. 9 High St, Chagford, Newton Abbot, Devon. Tel: 01647 433485.
The New Inn The New Inn is just about everything you could wish for from a country pub. Full of character, great beers, better food and a welcome atmosphere. The kitchen is run by Master Chef’s Malcolm Whybrow, his wife Karen and Michelin-trained Matthew Buscombe. As such, all aspects of this menu are beyond excellent, especially the puddings. Green Hill, Sampford Courtenay, Okehampton, Devon. Tel: 01837 82247.
Dartmoor Halfway Inn The Dartmoor Halfway Inn food is locally sourced where possible and is freshly cooked to order. The specials board changes daily and the menus with the seasons. Real ales and fine wines complement the menu, not to mention a good selection of spirits with over six different gins, a great selection of malts & vodkas to try. Bickington, Newton Abbot, TQ12 6JW Tel: 01626 824011.

What’s On South Wests’ Exclusive Interview with
Gary Barlow WOSW How did this show come about? GB It had been three years since I was last on a TV show, I didn’t want to be part of an existing show, I wanted the challenge of coming up with something. So I sat down with the creative teams and we came up with this idea of having bands battling each other. WOSW Did you have the idea for the stage show before Let It Shine was created? GB Yes, the stage show came first. The stage show had been in development for about two years. As I was getting more and more experience in theatre, the ultimate thing for me was to have a show with all the music of Take That. We’ve got 25 years of music that documents our life together and a lot of other people’s lives, I thought it would be really nice. We’ve got a brand new story, no one knows about that yet, but the one thing we needed was a group and that’s where this show comes in. WOSW What was it about Let It Shine that you liked so much? GB I think the underlying thing for me was we were looking for five young men to work as a team. Having young kids, in this day and age children aren’t socialising like they did years ago. I don’t think they are working as teams like they did. I’m looking at my kids and their friends and they are very insular,
reflecting on the past, the present and Let It Shine
they are on their phones or Playstation, they are not working as a team. So I think this show was to remind people of not only the strength of working as a team, the challenge of working as a team but also the feeling of success as a team. That feeling of success as a team is far better than success of someone sat in a room on their own, thinking ‘Great, I did it!’. When you’re in a team and you win, there’s nothing like it. So that idea of seeing these teams going through their good and bad days, taking on a challenge and beating it, being ambitious together - that rallying of a team is exciting. I wanted people to watch the show and think, ‘I want to be in that gang!’. We definitely need some team spirit right now, that’s for sure. WOSW Tell us about the prize GB As a judge, to be sat there promising these young kids they’re going to be a star or whatever, I don’t even know what that means anymore. So to give them a job was something everyone could understand. It wasn’t an easy job either. The contract was for 12 months, eight shows a week. WOSW Tell us what Martin Kemp brought to the show GB Of course! Martin was in my favourite boyband as a kid. I used to go to the shop with
50p and I’d either buy a Duran Duran record or Spandau Ballet. I used to dress like him so getting him was important to me because one, he was in the original boyband, and two, he has acting skills which I don’t have. So he would be perfect to give critique. WOSW What about Dannii Minogue? GB Dannii’s got a relationship with Take That when we first started she was
doing her pop career too so we would see her at awards. We’ve known her for a long time. I thought she was brilliant on X Factor, she was always the one every week that I thought would make great comments. For our contestants it was great to have someone on the panel who is so good at spotting talent. WOSW The final judge during auditions was Amber Riley, why bring her over from the States? GB I wanted someone from the States to bring a fresh perspective on it, and she doesn’t know who Take That are. The one thing I didn’t want was for people to think they were casting us: they weren’t, this wasn’t a tribute act. I didn’t want look-a-likes and they were not even referred to as Take That in the show. So she came at it completely fresh, I mean, she’s only been to the UK a couple of times before, so it was exciting. I think she’s an unbelievable singer and the fact she’s on stage in the West End, it just all felt great. WOSW One thing audiences didn’t see was eccentric acts, was that a conscious decision not to put people through just because they make good TV? GB Listen, those kind of acts are loved by the audience so we could have ended up with someone in the stage show who shouldn’t be in the show and we would be stuck with them for 12 months touring around the country. So I didn’t want to take that risk, there wasn’t room for that. We wanted talent from the word go.
WOSW You’ve made a crossover into musicals lately, where has this interest come from? GB A friend of mine from school, who was a few years above me, left and became a playwright. I left and did music. Ten years later he told me he had his first film coming out. Five years ago he called me up and said he wanted me to come and watch the play of Calendar Girls. I went to watch it and it was great but I could hear all the music and knew what it should sound like, what the flavour should be. He told me he wanted to make it into a musical so we’ve been working together for the last five years. So that’s what started me on this path.

Stay A healthy diet and lifestyle can really take a hammering over Christmas. The extra nights out mean there are more opportunities for temptation, and less inclination to be active the next day. No one wants to spoil the fun but it’s worth arming yourself with a few facts on how beat the bulge. Experts estimate that most people gain one pound, or 0.5 kg, over the Christmas period - that’s around 3,500 extra calories in a couple of weeks! The trick to preventing this is by trying to make small changes to reduce what you normally eat over the festive season, or by taking the opportunity to be more active during your free time. Reducing your portion sizes is probably the best - and simplest - way to keep your diet under control. That way, you can eat a little bit of all your favourites, rather than cutting out seasonal treats completely.
Over Christmas Here are a few switches to you help avoid those extra inches: * Eat one mince pie instead of two - save 185 calories. And take the pastry top off your pie and save an extra 80. * Skip the Christmas pudding and cream after dinner, you can have it for tea later on instead of something else - save 329 calories. Swapping Greek yoghurt for cream will add to your tally. * Always have a glass of water when you are drinking alcohol - cutting down by one glass of wine (125 ml) will save you around 100 calories. Adding a handful of ice to your wine glass before pouring will also shave off another 80. And beware huge wine glasses drinking out of a smaller glass will reduce your calorie intake. * Substitute diet or slim line mixers in your G&T and save 40 calories. * Have mashed potato and skip the roasties save 379 calories for three medium roast potatoes.
* Take a small portion of turkey instead of a large one - save 120 calories. Steer clear of the skin and avoid an extra 50 calories. * Opt for a small portion of ham instead of a large one - save 170 calories * Eat two chocolates instead of four - save around 90 calories * Don’t munch on bowls of crisps and nuts at parties, just take a few and then move away. 30 grams of crisps contains around 150 calories and a handful of nuts gives you 256 * Swap a glass of Baileys at 180 calories for champagne and save 70 calories * Substitute two sausages on sticks for two chicken satay pieces - save 80 calories Of course parties are the time when we relax and our guard is down so it makes sense to eat something like wholemeal toast with an egg or peanut butter to take the edge of our hunger before heading out on the town.
Thirst is often mistaken for hunger so staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water before a party will ensure you don’t drink wine to quench your thirst which inevitably lowers your resistance to calorieladen snacks. If you’re chilling out at home, keeping snacks covered or even out of reach will encourage you to eat less. And don’t snack in front of the TV. Above all, staying active over Christmas has huge benefits for your body and mind. Get outside, clear your head and walk your way to a healthier New Year.

The
g of regular cyclin Cycling has long been recognised as one of the best forms of exercise, but exactly what benefits can this simple activity provide? Research has shown that a wide variety of health perks can be obtained by regularly getting on your bike. Our immune system, which protects against infections and various systemic diseases, can be boosted by the activity created when we cycle, as can the many muscles which need to be in good shape and used regularly to keep good fitness and health. This is particularly important in older people, and cycling can be an ideal form of moderate exercise for this age group. While cycling we use an amazing number of muscles; leg muscles for pedalling, back and abdominal muscles for stabilising the body and arm and shoulder muscles on the handle bars. We may not be conscious of using all these different muscle groups, but nonetheless they are all being exercised, making them stronger and more efficient.
The skeleton is also benefited by the exercise, which has a positive effect on strength and bone density, and of course as the muscles are strengthened, they help to protect the skeleton to which they are attached. The bones of the spine, in particular, can benefit from cycling; the posture required and the movement of the legs strengthens the muscles of the lower spine and works the smaller muscles around the vertebrae which are not often exercised. All of this strengthens the spinal column and helps reduce back problems by holding discs in place. Those who suffer with diseases like arthritis can benefit from cycling because the circular motion transports energy to the joints, which aids the movement of both cartilage and joints, and most doctors will recommend that sufferers exercise. Many fear pain while doing so, but in fact exercise like cycling will keep the joints mobile for longer and can help in reducing the advancement of the disease.
Another often unknown benefit of cycling is that of stress reduction. Few things are more relaxing than cycling along through pleasant surroundings at a steady pace, with nothing more to worry about than control of your bike. In addition, oxygen is flowing into yourlungs and heart, which produces a feeling of wellbeing and thus a stress-free mind. The heart in particular benefits from regular cycling - working the heart makes it stronger and less vulnerable to disease. In fact, regular cycling has been shown to reduce the risk of a heart attack by up to 50%. For those who are overweight, cycling can be the perfect activity. As well as burning off calories, 70% of the body weight is carried by the saddle, allowing for safe and comfortable exercising. Whatever your age group, body weight or shape, cycling will definitely improve your fitness, health and well-being, so get out in the fresh air and give it a try.

Winners of the NODA “Best Pantomime” in the South West award in 2014 and 2017 this Christmas Paignton Pantomime Productions brings another eggciting eggstravaganza to the Palace Theatre, Paignton with Mother Goose. PPP has been bringing top quality pantomime to South Devon audiences since 1935 and built an enviable reputation for fast moving, colourful and thoroughly entertaining pantomimes. It’s nice to be rich but is it better to be nice? Poor and lovable Mother Goose, faced with eviction from her goose farm, must choose and the fate of Pricilla, the Goose Princess, who has laid golden eggs to help her become rich, rests on her decision. With her new found wealth will she be just as nice or will she turn mean and horrible? A hilarious professional script, a live 5 piece professional band, fabulous costumes and sets, great dance routines
and a highly talented cast, many of whom are new to the Society, will be on hand to present a top quality pantomime. As usual there will be some wonderful set pieces for the audience to remember. 2016 ticket prices have been held for a second year so pop along to the theatre box office and book your seats, telephone 01803 665800 or go to the “Buy Tickets” section of Palace Theatre website to book your seats online. A feast of Christmas entertainment awaits and you won’t be disappointed. This year our retiring collection will be for the Louisa Cary Children’s Ward at Torbay Hospital

At 368 square miles (954 square kilometres), Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England. It has wild open moorland, granite tors and wooded river valleys. At its edge is a landscape of small fields enclosed by stone walls and hedge banks. The open spaces and sheltered valleys give pleasure to millions of people every year. Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves and mines are among habitats of international importance. Dartmoor’s landscape is also among the richest in western Europe in terms of its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world (measuring 3.4km). In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and the remains of over 5000 prehistoric hut circles (houses) can be seen. Dartmoor has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks.
