Level 42 headlining Let’s Rock Exeter @ Powderham Castle Saturday 1st July 2017 At the beginning of their career, Level 42 was squarely a jazz-funk fusion band, contemporaries of fellow Brit funk groups like Atmosfear, Light of the World, Incognito, and Beggar & Co. By the end of the ‘80s, however, the band - whose music was instantly recognizable from Mark King’s thumb-slap bass technique and associate member Wally Badarou’s synthesizer flourishes - had crossed over to the point where they were often classified as sophisti-pop and dancerock, equally likely to be placed in the context of Sade and the Style Council as any group that made polished, upbeat, danceable pop/rock. The band’s commercial peak came with 1985’s World Machine, but they continued to record and tour sporadically throughout the ‘90s and 2000s. Featuring Mark King (bass, vocals), Phil Gould (drums), Boon Gould (guitar), and Mike Lindup (keyboards), the band formed in 1979. Before they released their first single, “Love Meeting Love,” the band was pushed to add vocals to their music in order to give it a more commercial sound; they complied, with King becoming the lead singer. Released in 1981, their self-titled debut album was a slick soul-R&B collection that charted in the U.K. Top 20, resulting in the release of The Early Tapes. Level 42 had several minor hit singles before 1984’s “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)”

hit the British Top Ten. Released in late 1985, World Machine broke the band worldwide; “Lessons in Love” hit number one in Britain and “Something About You” hit number seven in America. Their next two records, Running in the Family (1987) and Staring at the Sun (1988), were a big success in the U.K Throughout the remainder of the ‘90s and the 2000s, the band’s lineup fluctuated, with King the lone constant and his brother, guitarist Nathan King, on-board since 2001. Level 42 released a studio album, Retroglide, in 2006. Four years later, the band celebrated its 30th anniversary with a special tour, as well as a box set, Living It Up, which included a disc of fresh acoustic versions recorded by Mark King and Lindup. Level 42 are headlining at Let’s Rock Exeter @ Powderham Castle on Saturday 1st July.

THE SMASH HIT UK MUSICAL THEATRE SENSATION WRITTEN BY CAROL HARRISON ANNOUNCES SECOND MAJOR UK TOUR FROM MARCH 2017

ALL OR NOTHING, the new Small Faces musical sensation, will tour the UK in 2017 on its second major outing. The show opened to critical acclaim and nightly standing ovations at the Vaults Theatre in London in March 2016 and extended its sold-out run before embarking on its first UK tour, opening at The Hawth Crawley and playing through to November at venues including the Manchester Opera House, Theatre Royal Norwich and the Rose Theatre Kingston, with its final performance at the Forum Theatre in Billingham. The second UK tour kicked off in Chelmsford at the Civic Theatre on 29 March 2017 before taking to the road and visiting venues including the New Alexandra Theatre Birmingham, Theatre Royal Glasgow, Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Rose Theatre Kingston, Hall for Cornwall, Churchill Theatre Bromley and Theatre Royal Brighton (full list in Listings Information). Written by the award-winning actress Carol Harrison,

ALL OR NOTHING tells the electrifying yet bittersweet tale of Kenney Jones, Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Steve Marriott; four charismatic young kids from East London with humour, attitude, passion and above all talent. They became The Small Faces and were rocketed into the big time, only to discover the path to fantastic success is paved with exploitation, betrayal and ultimately tragedy. ALL OR NOTHING celebrates the unique sound of the iconic Mod band. The musical is packed full of all the timeless hits, including the brilliant Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Tin Soldier, Lazy Sunday, Here Comes the Nice, Itchycoo Park and of course All or Nothing.

The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘face’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed, and streetwise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to ‘Rhythm and Blues.’ The show is endorsed and supported by many of those who feature in its story, including singer P.P. Arnold and Steve Marriott’s daughter Mollie Marriott, who is the show’s vocal coach.

In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded on to the dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were workingclass free spirits who rode sexy streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas.

You can see All Or Nothing locally at 13-14 June Truro, Hall for Cornwall 15-17 June Poole, The Lighthouse 26-28 June Exeter, Northcott Theatre

CHAGSTOCK FESTIVAL 2017

‘The Best Little Festival in The South West’

Headlined by The Shires and Soul II Soul CHAGSTOCK 2017 THEME TO BE ‘SPIES AND DOLLS’, IN HONOUR OF ORGANISER SI FORD’S MOTHER, THE ORIGINAL ‘MISS MONYPENNY’ WHO PASSED AWAY LATE LAST YEAR. Chagstock - “The Best Little Festival in The South West”, returns in 2017 with their biggest and best ever line up. Taking place on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd July, Chagstock Festival will once again showcase the very finest music, food and entertainment from the Westcountry and beyond. Set in 70 acres of farmland on the edge of Dartmoor, Chagstock is renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and non-corporate, family friendly atmosphere. Chagstock showcases the very best music, food and entertainment that the Westcountry and the UK have to offer. Starting life as a small private party, Chagstock has now grown into a major fixture on the Westcountry festival circuit, selling out all 5,000 tickets for the last four years in succession. Chagstock 2017 is headlined by The Shires and Soul II Soul.

16

Hailing from the Home Counties, The Shires made music history by becoming the first UK country act to score a Top 10 album. The duo are at the forefront of the British country movement and the runaway success of recently released album ‘My Universe’ has made them not just the fastest selling UK country artist ever, but one of the biggest-selling breakthrough UK acts of any genre in recent years. Soul II Soul need little introduction. Best known for timeless classics ‘Back To Life’ and breakthrough smash hit ‘Keep On Movin’, they’ve sold over 10 million albums, performed live in over 20 countries, and headlined some of the most famous venues in the world. They’ve been recognised throughout their 29-year career, winning 2 Grammies and being nominated for 5 Brits. Friday night Marquee Stage headliners Slamboree are more than just a collection of musician; they are (almost certainly!) the world’s first ‘Pyro-Circus Rave

Massive’ act. Fusing high octane, fire-breathing circus performance with music that can be best described as ‘traditional Balkan folk crossed with full on wobbly bassline rave’, they are not to be missed! High energy six-piece British folk band Skinny Lister headline Saturday night on the Marquee Stage. They have released three critically acclaimed albums and their infamous live show has blown away audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK they have performed at virtually every major festival, including Glastonbury and Isle Of Wight, and USA highlights including joining the Vans Warped Tour and appearances at both SXSW and Coachella. Also featured on the bill is Raghu Dixit, who’s music is a seamless weaving of Indian ethnic folk, Sufi and classical with other traditional and contemporary influences from across the globe. His unique songwriting and vocal delivery have earned him

FRIDAY 21st & SATURDAY 22nd JULY 2017

a treasured place in the both the traditional and contemporary Folk & World music scenes. Led by indefatigable south-Londoner Barry Ashworth, The Dub Pistols have lived every rock ’n’ roll cliché more vividly than almost any other British band. They’ve burned through record labels, band members, and hundreds of thousands of pounds with their heroic devotion to hedonism. Yet they have worked with heroes like The Specials, Busta Rhymes, Madness and Gregory Isaacs and in this, their 20th Anniversary year, they are busier than ever. CHAGSTOCK 2017 THEME

TO BE ‘SPIES AND DOLLS’, IN HONOUR OF ORGANISER SI FORD’S MOTHER, ‘THE ORIGINAL MISS MONYPENNY’ WHO PASSED AWAY LATE LAST YEAR. Organiser Si Ford writes, “This year, Chagstock will be dedicated to the memory of my dear mother who passed away just before Christmas. It was after all in her back garden that the very first private Chagstock took place back in 2003. Her maiden name was Monypenny (the derivation of which is a long interesting

story of its’ own) , and during the 2nd World War she joined the WRNS and worked at a satellite branch of Bletchley Park working the code breaking machines. Having signed the Official Secrets Act at the time, she was unable even to tell my father what she had been doing until the 1970s. We used to tease her that she was the original ‘Miss Monypenny’. So with all this in mind, and in her honour, we are going for a theme of Spies & Dolls. We will also be formally re-naming the beer tent ‘Miss Monypennys’!

THE PRIMITIVE NOISE BAND If you’ve seen The Primitive Noise Band live and witnessed Becky Brine singing her heart out for all she’s worth, you’ll realise this isn’t just another “newcomer” band on the scene. This is a scorching collaboration between some of the UK’s firebrands of Blues, Rock ’n’ Roll, Rockabilly and Jazz. The band effortlessly takes the coolest fundamental elements of American roots music, to produce their very own perfectly blended original tunes with a raw vintage edge. They released their self-penned debut album ‘Ghosts’ in the spring of 2016, causing an underground tremor which continues to build and spread. On the opening title track Becky sings “I’m running baby, I’m running fast, I’ve got to outlaw all of these Ghosts

from my past”. The lyrics are a fitting analogy for the five band members. Whilst they’ve collectively toured in over 30 countries, appeared at some of the most prestigious roots clubs and festivals in the World, recorded and played live with artists such as Jeff Beck, Robert Plant, Van Morrison, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood, Tom Jones and Eric Clapton, they’re still hungry to keep moving forward, creating something fresh and ultimately, still buzzing about the music they love. The Primitive Noise Band have been touring, spreading the word and winning fans since 2013 with their explosive live show. They serve up a no-nonsense rock ‘n’ roll baptism, aimed at converting non-believers with an “all-killer” set of tunes delivered

with humour, grit and irresistible grooves. Becky has been described as “A white Devonshire Lass whose voice is black, soulful gold” (The Birmingham Metro). They learnt and mastered their trade the old way. As founder members of U.K. rhythm & blues legends The Big Town Playboys and The Nightporters they got out there and did it, touring relentlessly, over 200 shows a year, every year. One day playing a dive, lucky to get out alive, the next playing The Royal Albert Hall and everything in between, all this for the love of the music and the thrill of the show. Nothing has changed, and if you get a chance to catch The Primitive Noise Band when they’re in town, you’ll become a believer too.

You can catch The Primitive Noise Band locally on Thursday 15th June @ The Spinning Wheel, Paignton & Friday 16th June @ The Queens Arms, Brixham For more information and contact details please visit 20

The event - now in its 173rd year - is one of the most popular in Devon with numerous attractions on offer, while the rowing and sailing competitions remain at the heart of the Regatta. In addition to the rowing and sailing there are a number of other sporting events including a road race, golf tournament, a week long tennis tournament, traditional swimming gala and bowls and darts competitions. Every year the Regatta organises a variety of entertainment. The Marquee on Coronation Park is home to evening events, including the prestigious Regatta Ball and Regatta Rock. The Bandstand in Royal Avenue Gardens also has a lively music programme throughout the week with a number of local bands. The Marquee is also the venue for the hugely popular Shopping Village with a variety of stalls. There is also

there will be a fly past by the Red Arrows on the Friday evening.

The arrival of the Royal Navy Guardship is one of the highlights of the week. This year the Regatta looks forward to welcoming the River Class Patrol Vessel, HMS Severn, commitments permitting.

For full details of the programme, including how to book for the Marquee Events, visit the Regatta website.

Another feature of the Regatta this year will be the visit of three vessels from the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships. They are the Caronia, Papillon and Mimosa and they all took part on the famous Dunkirk evacuation. They will be moored close to the centre of town and promise to be a very unusual visitor attraction. The Regatta has a number of fun events for children and families including the ever popular competition, Spot the Oddity, while new this year is stand up paddle boarding - an exciting addition to an already packed river activity programme. One of the favourite parts of the Regatta are the spectacular Firework displays held on Thursday and Saturday evenings at 9pm. The Regatta is also pleased to have been allocated by the Royal Air Force the ever popular RAF Typhoon and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the Friday and Saturday evening and it is planned that

Inspired by his father at the early age of only Six years-old, Kris was already making an appearance on stage before turning Ten. He has since gone on to spend more than twenty years thrilling audiences throughout the globe playing live. The UK based guitarist has extensive experience touring in various bands, throughout the UK, Europe and USA, as both a solo-artist & session-musician. A published author who has written many guitar-technique columns, books and instructional DVD’s; Kris Barras has also been a featured lecturer at the distinguished Academy of Music and Sound. Kris currently writes a guitar technique column for Blues Matters magazine. The band has released two albums: The selftitled debut album in March 2015 and the latest release, ‘Lucky 13’ in April 2016. The second album has been a much larger success, reaching number 2 in the Amazon Blues Charts and number 3 in the iTunes charts. The album has also been voted ‘Pick of the month’ by the Independent Blues Broadcasters Association. “People used to think I was crazy to be fighting in cages, risking damage to my hands. Truth is though, I always enjoyed it and found that the fighting world offered me more opportunities than the Music industry. I got to fight in front of 8000 people in Asia.....I would’ve much rather had played to them instead of getting punched in the face!” The band are able to perform anything from a 30 minute set for support slots, up to 2 x 45-60min slots for pub gigs. We can provide up to a 2K PA System and Lighting Rig for smaller venues, and full back line for Festivals/larger venues.

Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, dragonflies and our pair of black swans, Dame Margot and Rudolph. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop. Café Our menu offers locally made filo pastry pies, homemade soups, ploughmans, freshly cut sandwiches and jacket potatoes: a wonderful feast for weary and hungry walkers! And why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our delicious homemade cakes or perhaps a traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk? The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely the milking parlour. This season we have a whole new range of stock showcasing unusual and imaginative gifts for all the family, many of which are made locally. These include some stunning new pottery, turned wooden gifts, ornaments, jewellery, pretty scarves and colourful bags, wooden and educational toys, gardening gifts, soaps, ornaments and our new men’s range! Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls tea towels, bags, mugs and prints. We also sell Becky Bettesworth prints, and a range of chocolates, fudges, jams and chutneys from all over the West Country: delicious!

“MESMERISING AND MEMORABLE” What an emotional rollercoaster of a show, this is, there are tears, laughter, goose bumps and stunned silences from the audience as the superbly talented cast of 11 seemed to replicate a cast of 30! What impressed me the most though, was just how versatile the vocalists were… yes, they could sing, but their acting and dance skills impressed too. It appeared they all had numerous persona’s, that changed every single time they walked on to the stage. There were so many highlights to this show, here are a few of mine, that I feel are deserving of a mention. The show’s compere, who treated us to anecdotes about the featured musicals, Dean Winter, performed the Ivor Novello & Grammy award winning song, What Kind of Fool Am I. Well I was transfixed, I loved it! Sami- Jane is mesmerising, I had a lump in my throat not once but twice, when she performed her solo Scarborough, from the Girls, and again, when she led the full cast in the glorious number from Blood Brothers, Tell Me It’s Not True. Lisa T Winter, I can sum up in one word…. WOW! Her Diva’s Lament from Spamalot could not have been more different from her solo. Listen, she really went from

being a tragic Diva to a Dream girl, with absolutely no effort. You cannot walk out of this theatre without being impressed by Lily Laight, with her breathtaking performances. Her extremely mature delivery of, Don’t Rain on My Parade, was worthy of a standing ovation alone, as was her fabulous Tap Duet with George Hawkins, in one of the comedic highlights of the night, the Billy Elliot sketch. Becky Bennet, absolutely nailed her performance during a duet with Dean, Money, from Cabaret, and then had the audience transfixed as she belted out, I Have Nothing, with that perfect key changing moment, spot on! You’d be hard pressed to note that the wonderful performance of Nobody Does It Like Me, performed by Debbie Farrell, was not Dame Shirley Bassey herself! As part of the ensemble, Debbie brings enthusiasm and glamour too. Barry Elmer oozes magnetism & with the endearing Luke Sampson, they both really capture the very essence that is Musical Theatre, with outstanding performances throughout. As does Josh Cousins, with one of the most emotional songs of the evening. He performs with Lily, Ghost the Musical.

Every time Josh is on stage, he delivers! For a teen, he shows great promise, as do George Hawkins & Clayton-Jay Peffers who star and share the role of Billy Elliot. What a super opportunity they have been afforded by, the show’s producer and director, Colin Matthews. Les Misérable’s is unquestionably one of the most successful West End shows ever, and it makes for a stunning finalé. Darren Lake performing Bring Him Home, is one of the best versions, I have heard… ever! His voice and stage craft were perfect for this role. He would not be out of place at Queens Theatre in London in the starring role of Jean Valjean. Whatever role or song, everyone engages effortlessly with the audience, and clearly every single one of the 30…oops I mean 11 cast members clearly love doing what they do, almost as much as the audience loved this show. The standing ovation, was a testament to that!
