Safe Beach Guide 2018 Here is a guide to some of the nicest beaches in and around the English Riviera. At What’s On not only is your enjoyment our goal but also to be safe with everything we have to offer - Remember to always keep your children in sight and make sure they wear a life jacket - please see some more safety tips below. ANSTEY’S COVE Anstey’s Cove sits between Torquay and Babbacombe. This quiet, peaceful and incredibly beautiful, small shingle beach nestles between high cliffs and a thickly wooded hillside. This is great place to come if you want to escape the crowds.

the perfect spot for a game of football or cricket. CHURSTON COVE The secluded little cove of Churston is an idyllic spot surrounded by cliffs and wooded hillsides. The beach is peaceful and incredibly beautiful and consists of shingle and sand. There is a steep path leading down to the beach which passes through mature woodland and opens out to reveal a small cove with spectacular scenery.

BABBACOMBE BEACH Babbacombe is a delightful small shingle beach set beneath the cliffs at Babbacombe Downs. An interesting place to explore with rock pools, cliffs and walks.

ELBERRY COVE Elberry Cove is a pretty shingle beach with beautiful clear water which can only be reached by foot along the South West Coast Path from Broadsands or Brixham. This is a beautiful sheltered beach surrounded by wooded hillsides in an idyllic rural setting.

BREAKWATER BEACH Breakwater is a small shingle beach next to the picturesque Brixham Harbour and the long breakwater. With its calm warm waters it is a favourite for scuba diving. There are fish, seahorses, seagrass and interesting underwater landscapes to be seen.

GOODRINGTON SANDS This mainly sandy beach with clean, calm waters represents an unusual combination of attractive scenery, the Quaywest Water Park and Goodrington and Youngs Park, which is an area of established park land.

BROADSANDS BEACH Broadsands is a beautiful long sandy beach in an idyllic rural setting. It’s gently sloping gradient makes it a popular choice for families with children or those wishing to distance themselves from amusement arcades. At low tide interesting rock pools are exposed at the southern end of the beach and there is a large area of parkland directly behind the beach,

HOLLICOMBE BEACH Set below high sandstone cliffs this sheltered beach is a real suntrap. At low tide interesting rock pools are exposed at both ends of this fine red sand beach. This delightful little bay provides the perfect setting to get away from the hustle and bustle of Torquay. The lovely Hollicombe Park is just above the beach. MEADFOOT BEACH Meadfoot is a shingle beach nestled below an array of spectacular cliffs which provides a perfect setting for those who prefer a quieter environment in which to relax. From the beach you can see Thatcher Rock and Brixham on the opposite side of the Bay. ODDICOMBE BEACH Nestled at the bottom of red sandstone cliffs Oddicombe beach is a sheltered haven for those looking for a relaxing day out. This attractive stretch of shingle beach is perfect for simply hiring a deck chair, lying back and enjoying the spectacular views. PAIGNTON SANDS This long stretch of red sandy beach is situated either side of Paignton Pier. It is backed by an area of parkland which is used for various activities, the Geoplay Park and events during the summer season, and is capable of accommodating large numbers of people. PRESTON SANDS Preston is red sand beach just a short walk from Paignton Sands and is very popular with families. Behind the beach is Preston Green which runs the length of the beach and is a safe area for the children to have fun or play a game of football or cricket.

TORRE ABBEY SANDS Torre Abbey Sands is an excellent long sandy beach west of Torquay harbour and is located along the seafront in Torquay. This is the main beach for Torquay and is popular with holidaymakers from the surrounding hotels, day visitors and locals. The sandy beach is great for making sandcastles and rests between rock headlands which provide a safe sheltered area.

SHOALSTONE BEACH Shoalstone is a small shingle and rocky beach just along the coast from Brixham Harbour and breakwater. It is adjacent to Shoalstone Pool, which is Brixham’s outdoor seawater swimming pool and is one of only a few left in the country. At low tide rock pools are exposed which are great to explore and nearby is Berry Head National Nature Reserve.

Have a blast this summer at Splashdown Quaywest The UK’s largest all outdoor waterpark is packed full of flumin’ fun. Tumbling tyre rides, slippery slides and twisting tubes await. Join in the fun, hopefully in the sun, but fear not the water is heated to near tropical temperatures and wetsuit hire is free, if the weather is bit on the changeable side. Climb to the top of the towers to sample some of the best views on the English Riviera, then plummet down almost 20 metres of the Devil’s Drop, if you dare or take a trip on the wild side, or should it be wild slide with the Wild Kamikaze. Plenty more to keep the whole family amused. Smaller children can splash in Tiddler’s Splash Pool or try out the starter slide Submarine Splash. There’s also a swimming pool or why not catch a few rays on the sunbeds for a bit of a breather after all that fluming. When all that splashing around has worn you out there’s plenty of ideas for a pit stop; ice-cream, burgers, milkshakes and much more. Check out the website for money saving meal deal offers. Best of all Splashdown Quaywest is located on one of the best places by the sea in the English Riviera for one of those great seaside family days; sandy

beach, rock pools at low tide, onwater activities, Gold Coast amusements, beach and snack shop for everything you could possibly need for a day out to remember for ever. Look out for tickets that allow you to spend time in the waterpark, on the beach and back again as many times as you wish on the same day if you want the best of both worlds. Splashdown Quaywest is open weekends and Bank Holidays in May and everyday from 29th May to 2nd September 2018. Large Pay and Display Car Park (Torbay Council) next door. Regular Stagecoach bus service nearby and even a steam train calls at Goodrington – see Dartmouth Steam Railway for timetable.

Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Directions In the Teign Valley off of the A3193, follow the brown tourist board signs. Canonteign Falls, Christow, Exeter, Devon EX6 7RH

t. 01647 252434 e. info@canonteignfalls.com

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, and dragonflies. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop. Café Our café offers locally sourced, freshly made selection of delicious salads, open sandwiches, homemade soups and much more. We have a daily specials board with a large variety of additional fayre that always includes a vegan, vegetarian and gluten free option. And why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our delicious homemade cakes or perhaps a traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk? The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely the milking parlour. This season we have a whole new range of stock showcasing unusual and imaginative gifts for all the family, many of which are made locally. These include some stunning new pottery, turned wooden gifts, ornaments, jewellery, pretty scarves and colourful bags, wooden and educational toys, gardening gifts, soaps, ornaments and our new men’s range! Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls tea towels, bags, mugs and prints. We also sell Becky Bettesworth prints, and a range of chocolates, fudges, jams and chutneys from all over the West Country: delicious!

PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY

Karen Thomson first introduced the Torbay and Devon Civic Award (previously known as Torbay Civic Award) in 2005 whilst teaching at Cockington Primary School. Since then it has grown in popularity with 23 schools currently taking part and requests from more than 10 schools next year. The Torbay and Devon Civic Award is for children in their final year at primary school. They need to demonstrate they have achieved: 1. Active Citizenship in their school community. 2. Active Citizenship in their home communities. 3. Commitment to an active hobby and a nonactive hobby. 4. Taking part in residential experience and adventure training. 5. Children also need to adopt a cause or charity which they feel strongly about. Karen’s reasons for introducing the award were these: • It brings about community cohesion through linking school and community • It empowers children to become global citizens – developing their awareness of the works of charities • It develops empathy and the desire to strive for a fairer future. It encourages them to be compassionate and to take responsibility for positive change • It enables children to achieve economic well being through the management of money • It encourages children to be safe – action planning with risk assessments is an important part of the award • It develops self esteem, confidence, resilience and assurance • It develops a team working ethos and promotes related skills of collaboration and independence

torbayanddevoncivicaward

• It supports children in leading purposeful and full lives and is great preparation for both secondary school and the workplace. • It encourages acquisition of important values (respect contribution compassion etc) and allows children to see them in practice • It is about what we all believe in: moral purpose and integrity - developing and nurturing the whole child for life and placing education in a broader and more worthy context

It was also born from a desire to balance the SATsdriven curriculum in Y6 with a human, selfless aspect to help those children become well-rounded, confident and caring individuals who strive to make a difference in their various communities and are prepared to take responsibility for change. Gary Vine from Aspire Direct Marketing joined Karen in 2014 and developed the online presence of the growing award with a Facebook page, a twitter account and a brand new website to showcase students’ achievements and provide information and resources for students, teachers and parents. In June, all students are independently accessed. Assessors include members of the community, local business people and local councillors. Successful children are invited to a Presentation Night where they are presented with their certificate by both the Chair of Torbay Council and Devon County Council. This year’s Presentation Night will be held at St Cuthbert Mayne School.

The name Elt has been a byword for shoes in Worcester and the surrounding area for almost a century and a half. Having spent most of my childhood on holiday in Torquay, Meadfoot Beach being my favourite, it seemed only natural that we should take over a well established business at 5 Fore Street, St Marychurch. 26 years seems to have flown by and we have a small but very important claim to fame. In March 1992 there was 17 other specialist shoe outlets in Torbay. Now there are only 4 including ourselves. From this I would make the fairly bold assumption that we must be doing something right! Our aim is to provide comfortable yet stylish footwear from both International and famous English brands. Ecco, Gabor, Josef Seibel and Rieker are our customers favourites,

not forgetting our English brands VanDal and Barker of Earls Barton. Our shop is both warm and friendly but at the same time fresh and full of innovative styling. Our stay in Totnes has been somewhat less, a mere 15 years! However during that time in both The Plains and Fore Street we have established an eclectic shoe store that clearly fulfils the need of Totnes and the adjacent area. Visit our Website www.robineltshoes.co.uk to read our full history. Modern retailing requires that you remain alert to changing trading conditions- witness the boom in Coffee Shops, Hairdressers and Mobile Phone Shops. When we first moved to Totnes there were 4 other specialist shoe shops- we are now the only remaining specialist multi branded shop. For us to be

Expires: 26th May 2018Â

successful we have to keep pace with trends whilst not losing our loyal customer base for comfort yet stylish footwear. My daughter Jenny has now joined the business and is in charge of the Buying. She represents the fifth generation of Elts in our family business. We are particularly delighted to have just been awarded Men’s Independent Retailer of the Year at the prestigious Footwear Industry Awards at the NEC. This is the third Award recently, having previously won Outdoor Retailer and Independent Ladies Retailer of the Year. In my view we would be nowhere over the years had it not been for the loyal, enthusiastic and most capable staff that run the shops with us. We hope to perpetuate this family tradition for many years to come. Torquay, St Marychurch 01803 327269 Totnes 01803 847878

Distinctly Dartmouth: An Unforgettable Experience

Distinctly Dartmouth Gin is made using locally sourced ingredients from areas close to Dartmouth and the River Dart.

Fresh Locally Sourced Ingredients Our gin features 8 botanicals including coriander, lemon peel and liquorice but also balances its juniper against apples from Hunts Cider Orchards in Stoke Gabriel and elderflower from Greenway House gardens at Galmpton creating a very smooth, floral gin with big notes of apple and an aftertaste of elderflower whilst still holding onto to its juniper roots. At Distinctly Dartmouth we have created a gin that nods to the apples and elderflower rather than screams at it.

At 368 square miles (954 square kilometres), Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England. It has wild open moorland, granite tors and wooded river valleys. At its edge is a landscape of small fields enclosed by stone walls and hedge banks. The open spaces and sheltered valleys give pleasure to millions of people every year. Dartmoor’s blanket bog, upland oakwood, caves and mines are among habitats of international importance. Dartmoor’s landscape is also among the richest in western Europe in terms of its archaeological remains. Dartmoor contains the longest stone row in the world (measuring 3.4km). In fact 60% of all stone rows to be found in England are on Dartmoor and the remains of over 5000 prehistoric hut circles (houses) can be seen. Dartmoor has the greatest number of archaeological sites out of all the UK National Parks.
