SPOTLIGHT

Local Talent

They were soon spotted by Andy Howard who recommended they should play on the introducer stage at Butlins Minehead GIANTS OF ROCK along with TOTO, Hawkwind and many others and this has been agreed and Ethyrfield will open the introducer stage on Friday 26th January 2018.

This editions Spotlight on Local Talent is local band Ethyrfield. The boys formed the band in July 2014 and called themselves New Project, it was soon noticed they had a certain something about them. They are Zach Cornish 17 Bass and lead vocal, Ben Cornish 15 lead / rhythm guitar and backing vocal and Dan Aston 13 on drums. They write and perform their own songs influenced by Black Sabbath, Sound Garden, Alice In Chains and Rush. They also perform a couple of covers from Black Sabbaths Into The Void and Diamond Heads Am I Evil. In January 2015, they entered the National Rock The House under 19s in London and WON the competition. They were then invited to play at the American Ambassadors residence Regents Park London in front of industry people, including keyboard legend, Rick Wakeman.

The boys are also playing at local venues including the brilliant food and music festival Fishstock on 9th September and The Tavistock Wharf on 10th September. Ethyrfield have released two singles on iTunes and Spotify and they are called Bag Of Bones and Black Sky. However, they will be back in the studio at the beginning of August to record two more songs which will be included in an EP along with their previously released singles. Please check their Facebook page for all details of up and coming gigs and their live video - Â facebook.com/ethyrfield. For more information have a look at the website www.ethyrfield.com

Later in the year, Sky TV approached Ben and asked if he would like to take part in a new TV show Guitar Star on SKY ARTS and with a nervous yes, Ben agreed. On the show he was mentored by legendary Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath and played a brilliant jam session which Ben thoroughly enjoyed. Tony Iommi has continued to mentor Ben and Zach with their song writing up to this day which both Zach and Ben thoroughly appreciate. In 2017 they were advised to change their band name and came up with Ethyrfield.

THE MARE & FOAL SANCTUARY APPEALS FOR MORE FOREVER HOMES An appeal has gone out to find loving homes for three of the Mare & Foal Sanctuary’s longest standing residents. Ponies Billy3, Hercules and Velvet have so far been overlooked by horse lovers looking for a four-legged friend. Billy3 – an eight-year-old Dartmoor Hill Pony – had a troubled beginning and it was clear he needed the help of the Sanctuary. He is being rehomed as a companion pony. Head of Equine, Sally Burton, said: “Billy3 is a wonderful character and we’d love to find him a loving home. He has such a big personality – and a really willing nature. “He loves people and as much fuss as you can give him. He is good to handle and would make a great companion. We’d love to see him finally find the home he deserves.” Hercules had a bit of a rocky start in life and was rescued as part of a large welfare case. He loves people and attention but needs a calm handler to give him confidence. He is being rehomed as an unbroken young horse with loads of future potential. Sally added: “We really want all our ponies and horses to lead useful and happy lives. They come to us, through no fault of their own, badly needing help.

Billy3

Hercules

“They are often poorly, or traumatised but once we have rehabilitated and trained them we need the support of animal lovers to give them a chance – and somewhere they can finally call home.” Handsome little Velvet needs a home as a ridden pony, but with an experienced person to continue with his training. He really enjoys his work and hacking out and so far has been willing to take on any new challenges. Sally said: “This characterful Dartmoor Hill Pony is still green but we believe a child, with the help of an experienced family, would be able to learn along with him to make a great partnership.” The Mare & Foal Sanctuary retains ownership of the foals, horses and ponies they rehome and runs several loan schemes offering the help and support of the experts in the charity’s Equine Department. Anyone wanting to rehome one of our horses or ponies can visit the Sanctuary’s website at www.mareandfoal.org or call our Honeysuckle Farm headquarters on 01626 355969.

whole Torquay United brand, introducing the new kit, new logo, new shop, new website, new programme and a new approach. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far but there is a long way to go.

This summer at Torquay United has been on a whole new level, as we have introduced a new brand for the club, while manager Kevin Nicholson and his staff have worked tirelessly on recruiting a squad capable of taking on the National League.

“Nike is one of the leading brands in the world and we’re very grateful to have them and Pro:Direct on board. There are always a range of opinions when it comes to a new kit but I do know the players and coaching staff are very happy. They feel good in what they’re wearing, which is very important.

It has been an exciting time for all of us but the biggest satisfaction for general manager Geoff Harrop has been the incredible backing and loyalty shown by our supporters. “We have sold over 800 season-tickets and a fantastic response from the Yellow Army,” said Geoff. “We’re very pleased with the support Torquay United people have shown to the football club. “Things are going very nicely on the season-tickets and we still have people coming in to sign up for the season, despite the early bird now having expired. We’re very thankful for that support and already looking forward to the opening game of the season against Tranmere. The signings Kevin has made over the summer and the buzz around the backroom staff feels like we are turning the corner. We have worked to refresh the

Home to England’s highest waterfall, descending a staggering 220ft, Canonteign Falls is a breathtaking Devon attraction, and a wonderful day out for all the family. Canonteign Falls is a hidden gem and one of the most idyllic places to see and explore with children. Perfect for outdoor adventure, our children’s play area and children’s assault course will keep the little ones happy, and our lakeside café, snack bar and gift shop will ensure that your every need is catered for.

Directions In the Teign Valley off of the A3193, follow the brown tourist board signs. Canonteign Falls, Christow, Exeter, Devon EX6 7RH

Situated within Dartmoor National Park in the heart of Devon’s Teign Valley, the waterfalls tumble down ancient rock formations to meet the lakes below, offering some of the most spectacular waterfall and ancient bluebell woodland scenery in Devon. A breathtaking sight, described by one visitor as “one of the most magical places on earth ”, wildlife thrives in the peace and tranquillity that makes the Falls a haven for both adults and children. Well-marked pathways take you on three scenic walks, suitable for varying ages and abilities. Our Victorian fern garden at the top of the Falls is a magical hidden treasure of Victorian landscaping. We have seven interconnecting lakes. The main Lily Lake has a central island with beautiful purple flowering rhododendrons and provides safe cover for the many Mallard ducks and Canada geese. Clearing of trees has been undertaken at the Falls end of the lake and visitors can now enjoy much enhanced views whilst walking around it. The six lower lakes are linked up with grassy walks and bridges. Planting combinations of fox dogwood, acers, gunnera and pampas grass provide year round texture and colour. Taking the path leading to the wetlands and lower lakes is one of the most fascinating nature walks in Devon, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl, dragonflies and our pair of black swans, Dame Margot and Rudolph. The Canonteign bees have an idyllic corner in the old orchard where they busy away making delicious honey. Honey harvesting is done on site and our fresh honey is on the shop shelves usually within 48 hours of collection from the hives. The Pirate Ship climbing structure within the large play area offers rock hold walls, a fireman`s pole and pull up ramps or children can go below deck and create a den. So gather up your treasure chests “me hearties” and let’s set sail! You can even add to the fun with pirate hats and other related items available from our shop. Café Our menu offers locally made filo pastry pies, homemade soups, ploughmans, freshly cut sandwiches and jacket potatoes: a wonderful feast for weary and hungry walkers! And why not enjoy a delicious latte or cappuccino made with freshly ground Italian coffee and a slice of one of our delicious homemade cakes or perhaps a traditional Devon Cream Tea after your walk? The Gift Shop at Canonteign is situated in the original farm buildings of Canonteign Estate in what was most likely the milking parlour. This season we have a whole new range of stock showcasing unusual and imaginative gifts for all the family, many of which are made locally. These include some stunning new pottery, turned wooden gifts, ornaments, jewellery, pretty scarves and colourful bags, wooden and educational toys, gardening gifts, soaps, ornaments and our new men’s range! Our branded merchandise includes Canonteign Falls tea towels, bags, mugs and prints. We also sell Becky Bettesworth prints, and a range of chocolates, fudges, jams and chutneys from all over the West Country: delicious!

The New Jersey Boys A celebration of the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons plus a tribute to Showaddywaddy Following an amazing run of sell-out shows, West Country tribute act The New Jersey Boys will be returning to The Palace Theatre, Paignton on Monday 31st July and each Monday in August. Before returning to the UK in 2008 the show’s originators, Gary Gould and his son-in-law Einar Vestmann, had performed many of the Four Seasons’ hit numbers at venues in Spain. Realising the enormous appeal of a complete Jersey Boys show and with the West End production breaking all records, Gary and Einar worked hard to put their own stamp on this family show. All round entertainer Gary brings more than twenty five years of musical experience to the show, combining tongue-in-cheek humour and audience participation. Einar Vestmann is an Icelandic, classically trained musician brought up in Sweden. His remarkable falsetto and sheer vocal range frequently attracts standing ovations. Vocalist Ricky Lee White from Plymouth, who has performed in the West End production of ‘Oliver!’, provides strong support with both harmonies and solo spots. Singer Tom Giles, the show’s most recent member, blends well into this vibrant and popular show which has built up a loyal following. An added bonus to The Palace Theatre evening will be a tribute to another great rock and roll band, Showaddywaddy. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing and dancing!
