Simple Minds have just started a huge 28 date UK tour, performing their Greatest Hits Live Following a summer of high octane festival appearances plus their hugely acclaimed 5X5 tour. The band are on top form, with the latest single Broken Glass Park getting extensive radio air play and regarded by many as a sign that Simple Minds are still on top of their game, consistently creative with over three decades in the music business. Without question Simple Minds are one of the UK’s most successful rock groups to date. Having topped America’s Billboard chart, the Glasgow band have achieved six No.1 albums in the UK as well as hitting the top spot in countless other territories including Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Australia and New Zealand. Simple Minds are also arguably one of the best live bands in the world and over a thirty year career have been responsible for some of the most innovative and enduring anthems in rock music. Expect to hear songs from their extensive back catalogue including ‘Alive and Kicking’, ‘Don’t You (Forget about Me)’, ‘Waterfront’, ‘The American’, ‘Promised You A Miracle’, ‘Someone Somewhere in Summertime’, ‘ New Gold Dream’ and many more along with the odd rarity.
The band has many influences from David Bowie to Kraftwerk and in the beginning the keyboard sounds and effects played an integral part in forging the sound of Simple Minds that have preserved to this very day. The job of this mastery now belongs to fellow Glaswegian Andy Gillespie, following in the footsteps of original keyboard player Mick McNeil. Since the departure of Mick around the turn of the 1990s Andy has held this post and contributed greatly to the grace and continuation of Simple Minds on albums such as Black & White and Graffiti Soul. I managed to catch up with Andy before the start of the tour to get an insight into how he recreates the original sound of Simple Minds and ultimately how to stay on top of the game for so many years amidst a job that holds such a responsibility. JS
AG
8
Andy how do you recreate the authentic sound of Simple Minds for example the sounds on the recent 5x5 tour and going back to the late 70’s, 80’s?
In order to recreate as authentically as possible the sounds on the original recordings of Simple
Minds, I had to use a variety of synthesizes and other programming methods – some of which are really technical. I was pretty much up to speed with the keyboards used by original keyboard player Mick McNeil, but was obviously restrained by the amount of equipment we could
realistically carry with us. In the end, I used my Access Virus synth, a Roland Jupiter 8 which was Roland's first truly professional analogue synthesizer. The legacy of the Jupiter synthesizers is due to their unique voice architecture and design, creating sounds that were so unreal and amazing
that they have to be heard! No other synths in the world can create analogue sounds as cool and authentic as these and a Roland Juno 106 for most songs… The Wurlitzer, Fender Rhodes & Farfisa organ sounds were easier to recreate as these are widely available from a variety of keyboards these days & they are pretty much a part of my touring rig anyway. The real challenge was programming the sounds on the Virus & Juno to recreate those early unique sounds. In the end, I thought it sounded pretty good, although some sounds are just impossible to recreate without using the actual model of synth used at the time….
JS
AG
As well as being responsible for the Keyboards and programming what are some of the highlights with being involved with the creative process?
I contributed greatly to songs on the album “Black and White” such as Kiss the Ground and Different World. The album was written and recorded in Taormina and Glasgow, with the final recording in Wisseloord Studios, Holland, March 2005. The album was mixed by legendary Bob Clearmountain, it was a great time for the band as this collection of songs were very enjoyable, the whole process came together very well.
I also worked on some songs from “Graffiti Soul”, including the title track Graffiti Soul and Kiss & Fly. The collection of songs on the album have a great feel, recorded at Rockfield studios in Wales. JS
AG
Simple Minds have pretty much toured constantly over the last 10 years, what are your personal thoughts on being on the road, endless travelling and life revolving around a tour bus?
I really enjoy touring & travelling – it has become an integral part of Simple minds pretty much since I started. After all the songs deserve to be played live and I knew this when I joined the band.
9
AG CONTIUED. . . We have fans all over the world from Australia to Brazil and recently we even did a gig in the Arctic Circle. It is great playing all the different kinds of venues that we get the chance to play. We give 100% every night and this could be in the smallest nightclub to some of the larger stadiums around. It doesn’t really matter the size of the crowd – every time we give it our all but if I was to choose a wee favourite of mine – for atmosphere and intimacy you can’t beat a small club. I also really enjoy meeting fans from all around the world & being part of the community that is Simple Minds. The reaction we get most nights is incredible & there’s never a dull moment on tour. My favourite part of being on tour is definitely travelling & spending time in all those different & amazing cities. We’re big on sampling local culture, which invariably includes local food & wine!
This is my twelfth year with the band!
JS AG
Time flies when you’re having fun!
Where you are now in relation to any new material?
The new recordings are progressing well with Jim & Charlie doing the bulk of the work! It’s mainly been done in Bath at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios. The current material that we are working on is sounding great. We are working with producer Steve Osborne who has worked with a wide variety of musicians, such as New Order, Doves, Vanessa Carlton, U2 and KT Tunstall. I’ve got a few tracks in the running, but nothing has been decided yet about what’s hot & what’s not! As always this is part of the process and we always get there in the end.
JS AG
Finally what is the best thing about playing live.
The best thing is without doubt the interaction with the audience – for me the smaller the venue the better – the big gigs are great 50,000+ people is amazing, but you can’t beat the buzz & energy from a smaller crowd tightly packed into a small venue! It is a great accolade to be known as one of the greatest live acts in the world but maintaining our live reputation is constantly challenging – however every time we walk on stage we all rise to the challenge!
You can catch Simple Minds on tour for the whole of the month of April all over the UK. The band are on top form and not sitting back on the reputation they have – they go out and earn it every night. The arrangements of the songs and the live reaction is as great as it has ever been and long may it continue.

THE MOODY BLUES Exclusive interview with Justin Haywood LEGENDARY rock band The Moody Blues are embarking on a 14-date UK tour throughout June that will take them up and down the country. Relaxing at his home in the south of France, Justin Hayward is neither moody or blue, and as lead singer, guitarist and songwriter for The Moody Blues, he’s feeling good about things. “Everything’s pretty good in the band, we’re three guys who really want to go out and play.” He continues. “For me, this is the best incarnation of the band, and it’s all very enjoyable The Moody Blues was formed in the early sixties by Graeme Edge, Ray Thomas, Mike Pinder, Clint Warwick and Denny Laine; but after a number one hit with the R’n’B song ‘Go Now’, things didn’t go too well. Laine and Warwick left in 1966 and were replaced by Justin and John. The band’s dynamic changed and their first album with the new line up became a classic. “Days Of Future Passed’ contained the hit singles ‘Tuesday Afternoon’ and the song for which they will always be remembered ‘Nights In White Satin’. A string of hit albums and singles followed, and the band became one of the biggest in the world and was one of the first so-called ‘Stadium Rock’ bands.
20
‘On The Threshold Of A Dream’, ‘A Question Of Balance’ and ‘Every Good Boy Deserves Favour’ all topped the album charts in 1969, 70 and 71 respectively, whilst ‘Seventh Sojourn’ hit the top in America in 1972. (‘Long Distance Voyager’ returned them to the top in America in 1981. Singles included the likes of ‘Isn’t Life Strange’, ‘Voices In The Sky’ and the sublime ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’, which charted in 1988. “’…Somewhere’ (known simply to the band as IKYOTS) is my favourite song to do on stage, I love singing it.” Justin confided. Going back to the single ‘Question’, when it charted in 1970, it had an impact on the band as Justin told me.
“The recording session was booked for Saturday and the other boys – as usual – expected me to come up with something.” “On the Friday night I still hadn’t got it, but I had two other songs in the same key and I just changed some of the words.” “I was so relieved and all the guys liked it. Actually, there’s hardly any double-tracking on the song as we were making a conscious attempt to get more of a live feel as some of our songs were complicated to do live.” The enduring popularity of the band – apart from the excellent music – all started with a bit of good timing. “We went to America in 1968 and it was the best thing we ever did.” Justin said.
“We hadn’t had experienced that kind of hit single before. ‘Nights In White Satin’ was a slow burner really (it only reached #19 in 1967, but returned to the charts in 1972 reaching #9 and got to #14 in 1979).”
Justin has been a member of The Moody Blues for over 40 years and he is still enjoying it.
“’Question’ had an immediate impact and then everything looked a bit different for us.”
“I love it even more than I did before; I wasn’t sure for the first 20 years,” he laughed.
He continued. “We played the Isle Of Wight Festival on the back of this huge record.”
For this tour, the nucleus of the band - Justin, John and Graeme will be augmented by four other musicians.
The song had an unusual birth as it was originally two songs. The blond singer-songwriter took up the story.
“It was just as FM radio was starting over there and our music was perfect for it.”
“We’ve got Gordon Marshall on drums, he’s quite a showman; and Norda Mullen on flute, guitar and bass. – she’s been with us now since Ray Thomas left us in 2001”
“Julie Ragins is on keyboards and backing vocals and there’s Alan Hewitt on keyboards – he’s a fairly new boy although I’ve known him for years.” As regards the set the band do have a slight problem, as Justin explains. “The problem is not what we put in, but what we have to leave out.” “There will be songs from most of the albums in the set, and we tend to speak on the tour bus and work out what we’re going to leave out and put in.” “We want to rediscover some of the songs we haven’t played for a while- or even at all.” He says. “Songs like You and Me, one of John’s songs called Nervous; not well-known numbers as such, but the Moodies’ fans know them.” “We might also put in Driftwood, The Day We Meet Again and Say It With Love as well.”
Justin has recently released a solo album entitled Spirits of the Western Sky, but it won’t feature in the show.
“I can’t see us stopping at the moment, but if one of the three of us stopped then it would be hard for just two to continue.”
“No,” he states emphatically. “Not at all, this is a Moody Blues tour.”
He concluded.
And there are also a couple of places that he is looking forward to playing. “Yes, I like going back to Birmingham for John and Graeme’s sake as they are from there and their families come. (Justin is from Swindon). Also Plymouth is nice as my daughter lives there.” Justin, might be 66 now, but he is still optimistic for the future of The Moody Blues. “The Moody Blues is my band – by that I don’t mean that I have any proprietorial hold on the band, it just means that I belong to the band.”
“I hope it doesn’t happen because it’s great music to play.” The Moody Blues will bring their exemplary catalogue of music to the Plymouth Pavillions on Tuesday 18th June. Tickets are priced at £39.50 (subject to a booking fee) and are available from all the usual agencies or online from www.livenation.co.uk and www.ticketmaster.co.uk . A legendary band with an enviable repertoire and reputation, The Moody Blues remain one of the top touring bands in existence. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a truly important band doing what they do best. Martin Hutchinson.

Spotlight on Local Talent
Husbands n knives Husbands N Knives are an exciting 4-piece female fronted punk rock act from Torbay with their mind set on becoming Devon's answer to X-Ray Spex. Husbands N Knives were born from a longing to channel that loud, angsty ugly sister whose feet are too big for the glass slipper and who, instead of marrying the Prince, would rather drink cheap wine at Ryan's Bar and listen to the Dead Kennedys. The band's own brand of energetic rock music marries gritty poetry with tongue-in-cheek punk farce, addressing issues of female empowerment, dreamy witchcraft and every-day suburban life. The high-pitched, girlie vocals reminiscent of Polly Styrene are backed by catchy guitar riffs, groovy bass lines and furious drumming, giving the band a rather unique sound on a scene saturated with metal and indie bands. Guitarist Julie and singer Lou originally bonded over their love of Riot Grrrl, a genre of 1990s punk rock that puts young women in the front seat of artistic expression, encouraging them to write music to heal and reinvent themselves. They started writing music in 2008 and
later recruited partners in crime in the guise of bassist Craig McCracken and current drummer "Hermit" McDermott. Since playing their first live shows in the Bay, they have gathered a steady local and international follow-up and have played at a variety of shows and festivals as far as Cornwall, Brighton, Bristol, London, Coventry and Nottingham. Lead singer Lou's statement of intent in a Manchester fanzine says it all : "We take pride in our prowomen stance. Our dream is to inspire female members of the audience to discover their own creativity and start using music, writing and art as a tool to liberate themselves. But Riot Grrrl bands don't have to be all-girls bands. Women's issues affect everyone : the boys in HnK are both doting dads to two little girls and in our audience are fathers, lovers, brothers and friends who have been fantastic in supporting what our band stands for."
In 2010 Husbands N Knives released a well-received debut album, 'Raised On Synthetic Bitch Milk', the vets supply product referenced in the title being, in the band's own words, "a bitter metaphor for being force-fed a superficial, trashy, plastic pop-culture since childhood ". Husbands N Knives have since appeared on various radio shows and compilations, including Riot Grrrl Berlin in help of Russian fellow girl-rockers Pussy Riot. In 2012 they gigged extensively. They are currently finishing their second album, "Virosa Ebriosa", which they have announced as "a punk ode to the archetypal spirit of female rebellion", to be released in the Spring.
