Rockology, Crossfire & Jai Rocks With 2013 upon us & looking busier than ever, it’s safe to say that Rod Scott, Jaime Darling & Nigel Pike; all known for their successful music careers in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s are today at the forefront of Torbay’s local live music scene…. But how did they come to be…? The guys were performing with each other in the cabaret band ‘Something Else’ in 2003. The new millennium brought a change in the music scene and a big shift happened towards the acoustic style. In 2004, Rod and Jai attended Drew Millin’s (Jai’s Uncle) solo gig and Drew suggested the guys play.

They proceeded to blast out an acoustic rendition of Deep Purple’s ‘ Smoke on the Water ‘ and their performance went down so well they were offered a Sunday spot at EJ‘s on the spot and so gave birth to ‘Rockology’! Rockology went on to become one of Torbay’s most popular Hard Rock Duo’s. They have now introduced newer material, a bigger sound with drums & bass on backing tracks; performing the music of Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Deep purple, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and many other big names from the Hard Rock World. After a successful year of Rockology, Jai needed to get back on the drums, EJ‘s wanted an in-house band for a Jam night and so Jai & Rod enlisted on bass their good friend

Nigel Pike and the three now gig under the name of ‘CrossFire’ with a set that includes the music of Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Gary Moore etc. 2008 was a busy year for the guys and Jai found himself doing a handful of solo gigs using studio quality backing tracks. Jai came up with a Meat Loaf like alter ego known as ‘ Jai Rocks ‘ performing the songs of Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, Poison, Tom petty, U2, a selection of 70’s glam Rock and 80’s pop. Over the past 4 years Jai has firmly made his mark as one of the best vocalists in the area. Jai & Rod with Rockology will be celebrating their 9th year, 8 yrs of Crossfire with Nigel Pike & 4 years of Jai Rocks. Not forgetting of course, to help secure the live music scene in Torbay Jai & Nigel have joined forces with local guitarist Scott Mcgowan to host a weekly Jam / open mic night at The Lime Tree, Paignton on Wednesdays, from which two local bands have been formed.

Spotlight on Local Talent

The Simmertones The Simmertones have been together since 2007 and have quickly become festival favourites in their native South West UK, building a strong following across the region’s music venues. The band’s first album “Presenting the Simmertones, Volume 1”, featuring a wild reworking of the Dr Who theme tune was recorded under the guidance of Richard Digby Smith (who has previously worked with the likes of Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Sparks and Free at Island Records). 2011 was a great year for The Simmertones. It saw the release of our E.P “Every Things Coming Up Ska”. Featuring Ocean Colour Scene/Paul Wellers guitarist Steve Cradock on three of the tracks. One of our own compostitions “Bring You’re Lovin To Me” received airplay on Alex Lesters and Gideon Coes shows on Radio2. In July of last year the Simmertones held a launch party for the E.P to a crowd of over 500 fans in a venue in Torquay. Joining us on stage that night was Steve Cradock; It was a superb night!

Another highlight for the band last year was working with the actor Phil Daniels. Phil came to one of our gigs where we asked him if he would do a voice over for a promo video for the EP. He agreed to help us but in return asked if we would record a song that he had written! This is very exciting for the band when you think the last song he featured on was Parklife with Blur. This year has got off to a good start. With all the radio airplay we have been receiving we have had to register our record label; Windrush Recordings. (Named after HMS Windrush, that brought over the first immigrants from Jamaica in the 1950s). It was these people along with and the help of Island Records Chris Blackwell that brought Ska music to these shores. The Simmertones are to ‘defend’ their South West Music Award as Best Ska/Reggae Band which they

won in 2011. Regardless of the panel of judges decision The Band will have built on their success and became the headline act for many festivals this year. Most exciting news is that the guys are currently recording at Music Mill Studios for their new CD entitled ‘Presenting The Simmertones Vol 2’. News of a very special guest appearing on the record is a tightly guarded secret, but they are bursting to make an announcement! Brand new original self penned songs are now in the set-list and going down well at gigs. With trusted & respected Producer Richard ‘Digby’ Smith, formally of Island Records, the studio wares should lift The Simmertones profile further.
