FROM THE EDITOR

hen I was interviewing our Real Weddings couples in August, I was struck by a common theme: when designing their weddings, many were told to consider how they decorate their homes. Why reinvent the wheel? What you love in one place can provide inspiration for what you love somewhere else. The worlds of interior design and wedding decor are merging, and one of the biggest trends we’re seeing in both is a move toward maximalist design. Consumers desire personality in big, busy strokes. Couples don’t need ‘permission’ for anything these days, but the more indulgent the experience, the better. Our top ways to manifest maximalism are on page XX.

8

What’s Up? Weddings

Since there’s no such thing as a free lunch, it’s wise to establish a budget before the blowout. Many couples receive financial help from their parents, but it can be a difficult topic to broach. We tackle the ins and outs of talking to your folks about footing the bill on page XX. Every issue, we search Maryland for the most gorgeous, inspirational wedding celebrations that have happened in the past year. 2022 did not disappoint: we found an Easton reception with the most romantic rattan bow napkin rings; a travel-inspired Navy wedding with enormous botanical arrangements, and a garden party in downtown Annapolis that ended on a boat. We hope these pages help to make the planning experience less stressful and more fun! A wedding is a beautiful thing, no matter what. All my best,

Gloves In the olden days, white gloves were like custom koozies: marrying couples gave them out as party favors. While etiquette no longer dictates gloves for every guest, we’re excited that brides are donning them again. OBSESSIONS

Q&A with Constance Polamalu:

Salt and Pepper Diamonds The chief operating officer of Zachary’s Jewelers explains why these speckled, smoky stones are forever fun.

Is it true that salt and pepper diamonds can be more affordable than traditional diamonds? CP: Yes, they should be much

less expensive than diamonds with a higher clarity. There is a smaller market for imperfect diamonds, so that keeps the price lower. That said, the diamonds that have a particularly attractive display of inclusions can still command a higher price than one might ordinarily expect for the category. For example, a diamond that looks like a striking dalmation coat might trade higher than a stone that looks like a murky pond.

So, what are the drawbacks of salt and pepper stones? CP: Because of the inclusions in the stone, salt and pepper diamonds can be more brittle than traditional diamonds. For people like me, who are really hard on their jewelry, a salt and pepper diamond as an engagement ring wouldn’t work. But as an earring, I wouldn’t have issues. Wendy Hickok Photography

First things first: we’re a little confused. What are salt and pepper diamonds? Constance Polamalu: Salt and pepper diamonds

are heavily included diamonds. Unlike a traditional white diamond, which is flawless, these diamonds have something trapped in the crystal structure, which creates a peppered effect.

It seems salt and pepper diamonds are suddenly very desirable. Why now? CP: A few really smart designers found the beauty in salt

and pepper diamonds and started doing cool things with them! For a long time, people were really set in their beauty standards, but we’re seeing those standards change across the board. Consumers who are looking for something different and unique are [especially attracted] to salt and pepper diamonds. No two diamonds are alike ever, but that’s even more apparent with salt and pepper diamonds.

16

What’s Up? Weddings

Does brittle mean prone to breaking? What would happen if you wore a salt and pepper diamond ring every day? Yes,

most people know that diamonds are the hardest substance known to man and think that means they are indestructible. In reality, the Mohs Hardness Scale, where diamonds are ranked the hardest, refers to scratch resistance. Additionally, inclusions are an interruption of diamond structure, which can create more fragile sections of a diamond. Do you have any advice for someone looking to purchase this unusual stone? In my experience, it takes a little longer

to find the right one. The best way to start is with a picture, to make sure that we are on the same page about what is meant by “salt and pepper.” I also tell couples to keep an open mind. People often think they know what they want but they end up falling in love with something else.

Unexpected Arrangements The secret to French country style is that it is simultaneously chic and unfussy. These unexpected arrangements seem to follow that recipe: a potted plant makes a ceremony feel homey, while a baby’s breath-wrapped tree is striking in its simplicity. Florals these days skew big and bigger, but sometimes all you need is a little intrigue.

FOOTING THE BILL

HOW TO

CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR WEDDING

BY J E S S I C A G R E E N S M I T H

Craft a vision Before you broach the subject with your parents, talk to your fiancé about the type of wedding you would like to have and what it might cost. Consider how much money you can afford to contribute as a couple, so you can set a realistic budget before you share your vision with others.

ne of the trickiest aspects of wedding planning is deciding on a budget, especially when there is a question of who might be footing the bill. Modern couples are different than their forebears, in that they often fund the festivities themselves. But that doesn’t mean traditional notions of who pays for what are eschewed by everyone. And therein, lies the rub. There is no definitive answer for how costs should be divvied up. You’re better off letting go of expectations and initiating a conversation with the involved parties head-on. According to the Knot 2021 Real Weddings Study

51% 49%

OF WEDDING EXPENSES are covered by family members

OF WEDDING EXPENSES are covered by the couple

Schedule a time to talk with your parents Give your parents a heads-up that you’re interested in discussing wedding finances, so they have plenty of time to prepare for the conversation and assess what they are able to contribute. You can open the discussion by sharing your plans and any research you’ve conducted, but don’t act as if you’re entitled to a specific amount. Here are some questions you can ask to get the conversation started:

Do you want to help with the costs of our wedding? How much money would you like to contribute? How involved do you want to be in the planning? Do you have any expectations about how this money will be spent?

Try to land on a specific number Some parents won’t want to give a straight answer, for fear of disappointing their children. But it’s important to encourage your parents to be explicit. Vague responses like “We’ll make it work” will only cause undue stress as it’s impossible to make decisions without knowing the exact amount you’re receiving.

Express your gratitude

Steer clear of comparing

If others are helping you to fund your special day, it’s important to keep them in the loop on major decisions. Don’t forget to say thank you, no matter how big or small the contribution is.

Finances are already a stressful topic, so don’t make it worse by discussing how much each side is giving and inciting a guilt trip. Unless you have an extremely intimate relationship with your in-laws, it’s a good idea to ask your significant other to talk to his or her parents alone. That way, nobody feels embarrassed about what they can or cannot give.

n case they didn’t tell you: Minimalism retired. We’re living in the age of cluttercore and cottagecore and weird girl aesthetic, which all boil down to one single theme: more is more. The people want excess, and purple, and paisley! Here are eight ways to live out your maximalist wedding fantasy.

1

3

Get busy Set the white tablecloths on fire and bring some pattern into your reception. Maximalist design is pro-frills, pro-color, pro-clashing. Meaning: pick what you like and, ideally, pick its most extreme form. For luxe linens, see BBJ La Tavola and Nuage Designs.

Choose a bold dress code We’ve moved way beyond black tie and semi-formal. Pick a color, any color, and see what your people do! Just be sure to include your attire expectations (as specifically as possible) on your invitation and website.

2

Switch up your setup Unconventional table configurations remind your guests this is no ordinary wedding. Our perpetual Pinterest covet is the super-long table that disappears into the sunset. It’s called a serpentine table and yes, it is very curvy.

4

Enshrine your cake

6

Tall cakes are back, baby. More tiers mean more flavors to gorge on and a spectacular effect when your tribe walks into the reception. For further fanfare, create a cake display with a spiral stand or floating tiers.

Share your favorite things You could rent furniture or you could buy it to have forever and ever. In need of a new coffee table? Amazing giant bowl? Repurpose them for your wedding, so you can showcase your personal style and imbue your objects with instant nostalgic meaning.

7 5 Insert costume changes Maybe you have an alter ego that would appreciate a reception cameo or you’re finally admitting your dream gown is a touch stiff. Either way, a second look is a fun way to set the mood as you transition from ceremony to reception. Set aside 15 minutes minimum for your wardrobe switcheroo and don’t forget to clue in your vendor team, because you’ll want the pics.

8

Roll in style A getaway car is essential because you need a DD. Make it cool and suddenly you’ve got an epic photo opportunity. Blanchard Limousines rents a Rolls Royce Ghost, while Concours Vintage Limousine chauffeurs a white 1961 Silver Cloud II and a 1939 Wraith Limousine. If you’re looking to move a larger crew, the Towne Transport Trolley, with space for 23, is iconic.

Give good gifts Think less ‘Dollar Store’ and more ‘Santa.’ Pick pretty favors and pass on anything that will live in a junk drawer (or wilt on a shelf).

LATE NIGHT SNACK: GRILLED CHEESE + TOMATO SOUP SHOOTERS

I N SI CKNE SS + I N HE A LT H Emily and Thomas met during their first year of law school, but became close while on a study abroad trip to Rome. “I liked that he was very smart; he always had these random facts in his back pocket about Italian history,” she says. Emily was also impressed by Thomas’ nurturing personality. They had adjacent hotel rooms, and Thomas would bring Emily breakfast every morning and kept her mini fridge stocked with Diet Cokes. When Emily got sick on a weekend trip to Venice (technically, the couple’s first date!), Thomas was the person who nursed her back to health.

Buttercream Bakeshop replicated the lace overlay from Emily’s Carolina Herrera gown to create a beautiful pattern for the cake. What’s Up? Weddings

A V ENUE NEAR MOM Emily considered throwing a wedding in New York, but when she started planning, COVID restrictions had the state on lockdown. The Eastern Shore, where her parents had just bought a house, was more open. Plus, having started a demanding job as a federal prosecutor, Emily knew she would need to rely on her mom for a lot of help. “If the wedding was in Maryland, it would be easier for her to meet vendors,” Emily explains. Emily and her mom quickly settled on the Oaks Waterfront Inn as the site for the ceremony and reception. “We loved that we had the whole venue to ourselves and that it had both indoor and outdoor spaces,” she says.

Emily had a hard time choosing a first dance song, but ultimately picked “Latch” by Sam Smith because of the romantic lyrics.

REAL WEDDINGS

T H E ‘PA NDA’ MOTIF Bold colors are not Emily’s thing, so she selected a neutral palette mixing whites and ivories, with touches of black. On the recommendation of a family friend, she hired Devon Pearce of Pineapple Productions to bring her vision to life. “From mini insert cards in the invitation suite, to the bridesmaids’ bouquets and dinner table centerpieces, to the hand-painted cookie favors, Emily’s favorite flower, the Marianne Panda Anemone, was woven throughout her wedding,” Devon says.

AN ‘ E XCE P TI ON AL’ B AND One especially superlative vendor, Emily says, was Veronica Martell and the City Social Band. They were hard to book (they had recently broken up because of COVID), but worth the added effort. “Our guests still talk about how good the band was, to this day,” Emily says.

THE DETAILS

LO V E LIBS Guests were invited to fill out a “Love Lib” for Emily and Tom, as part of the guest book designed by Cheree Berry Paper. Inspired by the popular “Mad Libs” game, these “Love Libs” prompted friends and family to think about the secret to a [adjective] marriage, or how Tom should surprise Emily with [noun] when he walks in the door before whisking her away to [verb]. Since both Tom and Emily are lawyers, the most personalized “Love Lib” asked guests to describe how [noun] is evidence of Emily and Tom’s love for each other.

Remi Maggio + John Dillon Chesapeake Bay Beach Club | Kir2Ben Photography

FAVE DETAILS: THEIR LUGGAGE TAG ESCORT CARDS

SYRACUSE SUD S Growing up in Syracuse, NY, Remi and John had definitely met before. Their high schools were across the street from one another, they had mutual family friends, and they had attended some of the same parties. But it wasn’t until one freezing night in December 2014 that they actually had the chance to talk. They closed down the bar, talking about their missed connections and what was coming after they finished college. John was headed back to the Naval Academy, while Remi was flying to Nashville, which meant their first date didn’t occur for another six weeks. With 700 miles between them, they settled for a first date weekend, which turned into a week-long staycation when Nashville was hit with a legendary ice storm and John’s flight was cancelled.

Remi and John paid homage to John’s career in naval aviation with decor elements, like a luggage tag seating chart and table names referencing favorite places the couple had visited together.

W E L COM E TO THE B AY An Annapolis wedding meant a destination wedding for all their guests, so Remi and John wanted to ensure their reception included all the quintessential Bay elements. “The Chesapeake Bay Beach Club was everything we could have dreamed of, from the beautiful views to the exceptional service and amazing food,” Remi says. The reception venue was the couple’s biggest splurge, and they had zero regrets. “It mattered the most to us to make sure our guests were well taken care of and left with nothing but great memories from the evening.”

Since Remi was living out-of-state in Washington, she enlisted Caitie Hanrahan of Betty Lou Events to help her plan. “There is no way I could have done anything without Caitie,” Remi says. “She was so knowledgeable and connected.”

G O IN’ TO T H E C H APEL John worked as a tour guide at the Naval Academy the first summer the couple dated, so one weekend, he took Remi on a private tour of the grounds. “When we got to the USNA chapel and he opened the doors, I had a huge moment of butterflies seeing him there with the altar in the background,” Remi says. “Although it was still very early in our relationship, I couldn’t shake the feeling that one day, we would be back.” When they started planning their wedding, Remi found out the sentiment was mutual; getting married at the chapel was one of the easiest decisions they made.

REAL WEDDINGS

2 7 32 DR ESS E S Remi tried on an impressive 32 dresses at Klenfield Bridal before saying ‘yes’ to the very first one she tried on, a silk chiffon ballgown by Anne Barge. “I still can’t believe it myself, but no other dress made me feel the way that first one did,” she says.

A FO RG O TT EN HEIRLOOM Remi was devastated that her grandmother, who passed away in February 2021, couldn’t be at her wedding, so it was all the more special when Remi’s father discovered a pearl heart brooch of hers tucked away. “No one in my family remembered that it existed, but the day before my father left for our wedding, he was looking for a pair of cufflinks his father had given him in 1990,” Remi explains. “He opened an old jewelry box and the brooch was right there staring back at him. She was with us all day as I pinned the brooch to my bouquet.”

L AST M I N U T E SON G S WA P Remi and John knew they wanted their first dance song to be country, since their relationship started in Nashville. They took private dance lessons and started to choreograph a routine to “Dance with Me” by Morgan Evans and Kelsea Ballerini, but ended up scrapping everything the day before their wedding, when they heard “You” by Dan + Shay for the first time. “We immediately knew it was more us,” Remi says.

Amanda Kerley + Brandon Myers

TIME SPENT BUILDING THEIR PHOTO WALL: 10 HOURS

Kent Island Resort | Kemp Collective

HOW THE Y M E T Brandon and Amanda met at Anne Arundel Community College in 2013. He was the “kid” (three years younger than her) who sat behind her in math class. At the time, the age gap was a deterrent, so much so that Brandon wasn’t even on Amanda’s radar. But when Brandon messaged Amanda on Facebook two years later, she said yes to bagels. Brandon proposed on August 9, 2021, the night they moved into their first home in Severna Park.

I SO SOM E P L ACE W OND E RFUL Amanda found Kent Island Resort through a Google search. “We weren’t sure what we were looking for, only that we wanted our venue to feel ‘right,’” she recalls. “I loved the fact that I could make the Farmstead my own. It is a beautiful barn structure with warm, neutral colors that enhance whatever vibe you are going for.”

Brandon and Amanda picked out childhood photos of them with their dads to iron onto the back of their ties. “It was a sweet touch and a great keepsake for them to remember such a special day,” Amanda says. What’s Up? Weddings

REAL WEDDINGS

I N NEO N LIG HTS Amanda envisioned an organic, effortless feel for her wedding day, with baby’s breath, wood details, and greenery. To help with the July heat, she ordered wooden fans from Amazon that were placed on every seat. Most of the decor was DIY, from the wooden coaster escort cards her brother-in-law laser-cut to the photo wall Amanda and Brandon built and outfitted with faux flowers, balloons, and a “Better Together” neon sign, also purchased on Amazon. “We had so much fun building it and so many laughs through the trial and errors,” Amanda says.

B R IDE K NO WS BEST Amanda discovered her Made With Love gown on Instagram. “I immediately fell in love with it,” she says. “I loved the 3D lace, the little bit of sparkle, the low back, and the intricate details of the skinny straps…it was everything!” She made an appointment to try the gown on at Lovely Bride and was not disappointed. The second dress she tried on that day, it was “everything she hoped for and more.”

T H E C US TO M BAND ANAS Personalized bandanas are a Kerley tradition that go all the way back to Amanda’s aunt’s wedding, when her brothers wore the table napkins on their heads like bandanas. Every Kerley wedding since then has had a table napkin moment, only this time Amanda’s dad leveled up. “Brandon and I are big into fishing, so my dad got a graphic of a fishing boat with us and our dog Charlie printed on bandanas, along with our names and wedding date. It was a great keepsake not only for us but all our guests.”

“We practiced dancing so many times at home because we were nervous to dance in front of that many people. As soon as [our song]

started playing, it

One of the best experiences of the day, Amanda says, was their sunset photo session. “It was such a treat for Brandon and me to take a moment to ourselves and do sunset portraits. Taking that time not only gets you beautiful pictures but also lets you step back and take it all in. It was an amazing feeling walking in the fields and looking at how beautiful the venue was and at all who came to celebrate us!”

Samantha Scruggs + Bart Quinton Smith

FAVE BITES: POPCORN + BOOZY SLUSHIES ABOARD THE HARBOR QUEEN

William Paca House | Britney Clause Photography

L OND ON CAL L I N G Although Sam hails from Maryland, she was living in London when she met Bart the modern way, on Bumble. Their chemistry was instant; holed up in a cozy Chelsea pub, they chatted for hours, sharing gin and tonics and a kiss(!) before the night was done.

THE M ARYL AND P I E CE OF THE P UZ Z L E Sam and Bart were thrilled to show their friends and family from the UK the part of the world where Sam grew up. “We both loved the classic, colonial look of the William Paca House & Gardens (and didn’t want the party to end too early!), so we looked at where we could extend the celebration,” they said. A sunset cruise aboard the Harbor Queen was an easy decision. “It’s a true Annapolis icon! We loved the charm of the Harbor Queen, lined with life jackets along the ceiling on the bottom deck and an open top deck to enjoy the Maryland views.”

Sam and Bart thought up a savvy way of selecting their first dance song, “Itty Bitty Pretty One” by Thurston Harris. “No matter if we are in good spirits or bad moods, we often dance to this song in the kitchen!” Bart says.

A CR O SS TH E POND PLANNING Planning a Maryland wedding from the UK had its challenges; Sam and Bart did many late-night calls with vendors and committed to both of their venues with only a FaceTime tour. They credit Sam’s parents for doing the physical labor of visiting venues when they could not. Their best advice? “Take each item day by day! It is all worthwhile.”

T HERE’S A SQUASH IN THOSE FLO W E RS Sam favored bold colors and unconventional accents, like the fruits and vegetables she asked her godfather, Domingo Vega, to incorporate into the table arrangements. Her bridesmaids all chose vivid, patterned dresses and for party favors, the couple doled out citrus-shaped candles from Esh, a British designer that Sam loves. “It was important to us to have elements at the wedding represent our style and what we would have in our home,” Sam says. Other favorite brands that made cameos at the wedding were Matilda Goad (a giant clam shell, to hold cards), Sarah Goodwin Design (‘Q’ and ’S’ prints), and Bridie Hall (alphabet pen holder).

REAL WEDDINGS

N O RO O M F OR THAT TRAIN Sam tried on many dresses, but none of them had the “wow factor” she was after until she slipped on a mermaid gown from Vera Wang’s Iconic line. “It was nothing to the simple dress I had envisioned,” she says. Her second gown, the Stella gown by Bronx and Banco, was a matter of necessity when she realized her ceremony gown wouldn’t fit on the boat!

“[Afterwards], our friends mentioned that every time they were about to leave the dance floor, the Timmie Metz Band started playing another amazing tune and they just couldn’t go!” Bart says. “They were awesome.”

W E D D I NG KRE W E Sam and Bart agree that the most spectacular part of their day was the walk from the William Paca House to the Harbor Queen. Unbeknownst to their guests, they hired the Naptown Brass Band to provide a musical accompaniment as they paraded down the streets of Annapolis. “It was truly pure joy,” Sam says. “We received waves from people outside of their homes, cheers from people dining outside, and congratulations from the many boats parked along the harbor. To top it all off, it was the most perfect Annapolis sunset. The parade by Naptown Brass Band turned into an unexpected street party with all our guests involved! It was an experience to remember.”

GRACEFUL GRANDMILLENIAL WEDDING DATE: MAY 21, 2022 NUMBER OF GUESTS: 120

Maggie Perkins + Jake Jarboe

FAVE DETAIL: THE CHAMPAGNE CART THAT BECAME A CAKE CADDY

Tidewater Inn | Kimberly Florence Denn

TE RP HAV E & TE RP HOL D Mutual friends introduced Maggie and Jake to one another in 2014, while both were students at the University of Maryland. They bonded over nights out at their favorite college bar, RJ Bentley’s, and at football tailgates. “We were lucky to have so much in common, between growing up as Maryland kids and learning that each other’s families spent the summers in Rehoboth Beach,” Maggie says.

THE CHARM I N G I N N The Jarboes wanted to find a venue that would allow them to celebrate all weekend long. They considered options in Rehoboth, but quickly realized that transportation there would be a hurdle. “Our incredible planner, Alex, took our vision for a weekend of coastal fun and suggested the Tidewater,” Maggie explains. The couple fell in love with the inn as soon as they laid eyes on it. “The town of Easton looks like a movie set; it has amazing stores and restaurants and the most charming homes and streets,” Maggie says. “Melanie, the Tidewater Inn’s coordinator, and her entire team are the kindest people and made our weekend so easy.”

Alex encouraged Maggie and Jake to name their guest tables after their favorite places. She commissioned an artist to make sketches of each place for the escort wall, which said, “This Must be the Place,” as a nod to one of their favorite bands, The Talking Heads.

A D A SH O F GRAND MA CHIC Maggie went for a classic, grandmillenial aesthetic with soft pastels, lots of greenery, and a black-andwhite checkered dance floor. “I had so much fun working with Alex on all of the small details—bow napkin rings, a watercolor crest, and a beautiful map of our favorite places in the DMV, [which we] put in the guests’ welcome bags with their weekend itineraries,” she says.

P RE TTY P O U R S Maggie and Jake didn’t want a “typical wedding band” and instead hired the Benderz, a Dewey cover band. “They made the night!” Maggie says. “They learned our dance songs, and then kept the party going with their incredible energy.”

Alex Nesterak also brought Jake’s dreams to life with a draft beer bar, courtesy of White Glove Rentals, which was situated in the garden during the reception. “It was an awesome spot for people to hang out, [enjoy] a beer, and smoke a cigar,” Maggie says. Jake coordinated with a favorite brewery, Dewey Beer Company, to provide the beverages.

REAL WEDDINGS

THE G RAND P RE V I E W Maggie and her mom started working on the design for her wedding a year in advance. “We met Alex at the Tidewater Inn and got to hear all of her amazingly creative ideas while we walked through the space,” Maggie says. A few weeks later, Alex presented the couple with a design plan and organized a sample day for them to see everything in person. “It was so cool to get a preview of the tablescape and florals!” Maggie says.

M OST VAL UAB L E V E ND O R Maggie and Jake also looked to their planner for help finding vendors. “It was such a relief,” Maggie says. “We knew that she trusted each one from working with them previously, which helped us to feel super comfortable.” Maggie says her photographer, Kimberly Denn, was especially standout. “There aren’t words to describe how much we adore our photos and how perfectly she captured the day. Kimmie and her husband Andrew were so fun to be around, and their energy is unmatched. Kimmie even surprised us with a beautiful, framed portrait delivered to our house soon after the wedding!”

Kelly Kolb + Dwaine Wintz, Jr. Wylder Hotel Tilghman Island | Brooke Michelle Photography WEDDING DATE: OCTOBER 23, 2021 NUMBER OF GUESTS: 95

NO W ORD S Kelly and Dwaine matched on Hinge and had their first date at a ramen bar. Initially, Dwaine was so quiet that Kelly was worried he wasn’t having a good time. But his reserved demeanor was a cover for his surprise. “He later told me he was shocked that he had finally found someone he could see himself spending the rest of his life with,” Kelly says.

THE W YL D E R HOTE L Early in their relationship, Kelly and Dwaine attended a friend’s wedding in Cape Cod, which ended up providing a lot of the inspiration behind their own celebration. While they chose to stay closer to their Virginia home, they set out to find a venue that captured that casual, coastal ambience. They found the Wylder Hotel and fell in love with its lush green lawn, sailboat scenery, and chic crab shack restaurant. “It was the perfect mix of classy coastal, with a laid back ‘no shoes necessary’ kind of feel,” Kelly says.

To add a touch of fun to the ceremony, Dwaine and his groomsmen arrived by boat. The Wylder Hotel helped coordinate the charter of Working Girl from St. Michaels. What’s Up? Weddings

P E TT I C LO SE Kelly picked her dress years in advance—the only problem was that it was way outside her price range! She took the essence of her dream gown and headed on down to BHLDN, where she was able to find a gown with a lace bodice and similar silhouette. “When I tried it on, it wasn’t love at first sight because something wasn’t quite right,” she says. “I realized that it needed a little more fluff and body in the skirt, so I purchased a petticoat to go underneath. After that it was finally the dress that I had been dreaming of!”

Dwaine insisted on a fall wedding because, in his words: “I sweat too much to be outdoors in a suit on my wedding day in the summertime.”

THE I R FAV ORI TE SONG S A big John Legend fan, Kelly knew she wanted to do her first dance to one of the R&B star’s lesser-known songs. While making Valentine’s Day dinner, Dwaine suggested “Stay With You”—the sweet lyrics reminding him of their upcoming promise to “stay with you…through the ups and the downs.” For the processional, Kelly alluded to her love of rom-coms with the Crazy Rich Asians version of “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Kina Grannis.

HOM E M AD E HOM I L I E S One of the couple’s favorite memories from their wedding was writing their own vows and having Dwaine’s dad officiate the ceremony. “[While both tasks] were a little daunting, it made our wedding feel so much more personal and meaningful to us,” Kelly says.

D ANCE AL L N I G HT Kelly and Dwaine anticipated spending the majority of their night out on the dance floor, so splurging on a live band instead of a DJ was a no-brainer. “We both love the energy that a live band brings to a wedding,” Kelly says. That Dwaine joined the band onstage to perform his go-to karaoke song only made the decision even more worthwhile. “It was goofy and playful and the perfect way to end the night!” Kelly says.
