he Yukon Prize for Visual Arts may have only been launched last summer, but it looks as though it is set to become an annual fixture of the Yukon’s arts and culture scene. The Yukon Prize was created with three main goals in mind: to provide a significant monetary amount to one Yukon artist to help them focus full-time on creating art, to promote Yukon artists and their art

locally, nationally and internationally, and to foster discourse within the Yukon to push artists to their full potential. This year, the six finalists for the prize of $20,000 are Ken Anderson (Khàtinas.àxh), a member of the Teslin Tlingit Council; Amy Ball of Dawson City; Sho Sho “Belelige” Esquiro, a member of the Ross River Dena Council; Krystle Silverfox, a citizen of the Selkirk First Nation from New Westminster, B.C.; Joseph Tisiga, a member of the Kaska Dena Nation from Montreal and Veronica Verkley of Dawson City. The five runners-up will receive $2,000 each. Ken Anderson (Khàtinas.àxh) was born and raised in the Yukon and is of Tlingit and Scandinavian ancestry. Tlingit family and traditions are the foundation of the art he practices. His training and inspiration comes largely through informal self-study. Anderson works

Work by Amy Ball and these themes shape a practice that includes painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and new media. Joseph Tisiga maintains a multidisciplinary practice that is rooted in painting and drawing. His practice includes performance, photography, sculpture and installation, and his work reflects upon notions of identity and what contributes to this construct. Themes in Tisiga’s art such as community, nationality, family, history, location, real and imagined memories are becoming more and more relevant in the current climate. Tisiga’s works explore cultural and social inheritance, as well as the mundane, the metaphysical and the mythological, often all at once. Work by Joseph Tisiga’s The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery in Toronto. “As someone born in the Yukon, it was impressive to see the breadth of practices in the territory, ranging from fashion to photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, beadwork, graphic novels, carving, and everything in between,” said Hopkins. “The unique visions of Yukon artists stood out to me, visions that often reflected on the land itself, its deep traditions and ecologies. It was incredibly difficult to choose the six finalists from so many worthy applications and I am grateful to all who took the time to share their work with the jury.”

PHOTOS: Mike Thomas, Marketing & Development Coordinator, Yukon Arts Centre

A curated group exhibition featuring the work of all six finalists will open on September 18, and the first-place winner will be announced at a special gala event planned for the weekend of November 19-21 in Whitehorse. While one artist will take home this year’s prize, all six finalists and all 107 applicants are being celebrated, as is the Yukon’s arts and culture scene in general. “I hope everyone will take the time to see and learn about the outstanding work of these six exceptional artists,” said Julie Jai, who co-founded the Yukon Prize Committee along with David Trick. “A special thank you to all 107 art-

ists who have applied to the Yukon Prize. Collectively they demonstrate the breadth of talent in the Yukon and Yukon’s wonderful ability to develop and attract talented and creative people.” The Yukon Prize comes from a partnership between Jai and Trick, with the Yukon Arts Foundation, the Yukon Arts Centre and a team of volunteers. Eleven people currently make up the committee, meaning it is a small yet fiercely dedicated team behind this initiative. Over the years, a number of people walking in the Millennium Trail area have been followed, challenged and even had their bagged lunch taken from their hands. Many small dogs (some on leashes) and house cats have been taken or killed on the property where they live. It is a stirring moment when you hear coyotes howling and yipping in the distance and that is part of the Yukon outdoor experience.

oyotes are survivors. They have been here in the Yukon for just over 100 years and inhabit all areas of Canada, with the possible exception of Nunavut. They are also present on the islands of Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island, presumably having crossed on ice which occasionally has formed and temporarily connected with the mainland. Coyotes are very adaptable. Unlike other predators, they thrive living in our urban environment. A coyote that does not run away from humans is most likely accustomed or habituated to humans. This generally occurs when the coyote has been fed by humans through pet foods left outside, unsecured garbage, or bird seed from feeders. Coyotes who rely on those food sources are more inclined to begin approaching humans looking for a handout and may also display a “too tame” attitude or aggressive behaviour. Coyote attacks on humans are rare, but a quick Google search will list hundreds of these incidents. The greatest number involve children under five years of age. At this time, two deaths have resulted from coyote attacks. A four-year-old child in California and a 19-year-old woman in Nova Scotia were the victims. Coyote encounters can be a single animal or groups (packs.) In Whitehorse, a four-year-old

AVOIDING COYOTES

• Do not feed them or leave food out where they can access it. • Feed your pet(s) indoors. • Pets roaming free can be a coyote victim. • Spilled bird seed attract small rodents which are on the coyote food list. • Secure garbage. • A fence should extend six feet under the ground surface. • Always be aggressive towards coyotes. Shout, raise your arms, throw a stick. Children and pets should be right with you. • Children need to be taught that coyotes are dangerous and should be avoided. n

harlotte Service-Longépé is the great-granddaughter of Robert W. Service. She remembers struggling with the language when she first read “The Shooting of Dan McGrew” in English, but she has clearly developed some facility with the language since then. This is obvious from the many short videos available on the robertwservice. blogspot.com. Service-Longépé grew up in Paris, but spent a lot of time visiting sites in the Principality of Monaco and Lancieux, where Service spent most of his later years. She heard a lot about her famous relative from her mother, his daughter, Iris. Following the completion of a master’s degree in business administrations studies in Monaco, she spent three years studying Service’s life and work, and wrote Robert W. Ser-

more than 1,200 poems in Service’s output, including a few from family papers that had not been published previously, to assemble this anthology. There are complete poems and snippets of others, grouped together by such themes as work, love, religion,

A montage in the midst of poems about war others are small drawings meant to fit the text. In addition, there are samples from Service’s prose writings and appreciative quotations from fans of his work, some of them used to introduce specific poems.

As one might expect, the classic Yukon poems are represented, but this anthology spans the entire length of Service’s career, including some material that he wrote before coming to the Yukon and other material from

A sketch of the Service home, called Dream Haven, at Lancieux, France the 1950s, a few years before he passed in 1958. I found quite a bit of material that I had never seen before. The book is engaging and I devoured it in large gulps over three or four days. It’s a nice package,

A man and a dog illustrate a series of poems about appreciating nature and freedom with only a few scattered typos. The only actual error I spotted was in her short biography of the poet at the end of the book. This was probably the result of her visit to Dawson in 2016, when she noted that the Service and

London cabins were only separated by a few hundred metres on Eighth Avenue, and didn’t realize that London’s was still out on Henderson Creek when Service lived here. n

hh, the Yukon! A space of boundless nature and mighty, human-built monuments – like my abandoned 1985 Ford Tempo. Rusting and rotting in the woods, our old family car always brings a smile to my neighbour’s face. It’s hardly even hazardous anymore, having dropped its antifreeze in 1999. Better yet, the oil weeped away ages ago. This fine piece of engineering is practically wildlife habitat, given how much the mice like it. And whenever tourists come down this road they will say, “hey, check out that 1985 Ford Tempo! Now I have seen it all!” And really, leaving my Tempo where it rots is the most affordable option. Otherwise, it would really cost me. Between the towing and the fees at either a scrapyard or Raven Recycling, I’ll end up paying out $300. If we were down south, I would be paid for my vehicle and would definitely get this done, but here in the Yukon, why bother? Sarcasm aside, abandoned cars are an unfortunate part of Yukon’s landscape, one that’s impossible to overlook. Since the construction of the Alaska Highway, cars have come up to the Yukon to die, unceremoniously pushed into valleys, creeks and forests. Now some of those old trucks are a source of antique reverence to the past, but today more and more are family cars like my Ford Tempo. These vehicles risk our environment as their hazardous parts degrade and enter our soil and water. With Yukon’s growing population, an estimated 10,000 vehicles will come to the end of their life in the next 10 years. We can predict that a large portion of them will be left to rot away in

CANADIAN GRADE A YUKON EGGS

An abandoned car on the North Canol our “pristine” environment. What we need is a plan to ensure these vehicles make it to scrap yards. That way they can contribute to the repair of vehicles on the road, or to recycling where their valuable metals are sustainably reused. A simple solution would be a fee on new car sales to cover the cost of recycling when the car no longer has any other value. A $400 charge on a $40,000 new car is a 0.01per cent charge at purchase and it would make sure that cars would stop getting pushed into valleys, rivers and forests. This is exactly the model for electronic waste, which has been successful at diverting toxic electrical components (such as mercury and lead) away from our landfills. People across the Yukon are frustrated with the piles of old

cars littering the landscape. It’s time to change this predictable and solvable environmental issue. Raven Recycling and Zero Waste Yukon are pushing for policies that ensure end-of-life vehicles are managed in a way that ensures they don’t enter our landscape and that their hazardous components are disposed of properly. Raven Recycling just wrapped up a photo contest featuring abandoned vehicles on public land to raise awareness about this issue, called Rec(ycle) Your Wreck. To celebrate the conclusion of the contest, Raven will be hosting a car recycling event where a number of abandoned vehicles from our community will be recycled for free. ishes that come together as fast as you can boil water are important for everyone who cooks. This super simple pasta dish gets all its punch from bitter greens, a bit of chili and some lovely little tinned fishes. If you can’t find broccoli rabe you can substitute kale, or even large leaf spinach, but I suggest you hold out for broccoli rabe. It’s a bit more robust and bitter and plays off the anchovies and garlic perfectly. Serves 4

Whole wheat spaghetti with anchovies and broccoli rabe ... cont’d METHOD

1 Bring a large pot of salted water to the boil, cook spaghetti to desired doneness. In a large cast iron skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. 2 Add garlic and anchovies and cook until fragrant, about 3 minutes. Add the broccoli rabe and continue to cook, tossing often until the broccoli rabe is soft, about 4 minutes. Add chili and remove from heat.

3

Once pasta is cooked, reserve 1 cup of cooking liquid and then add drained pasta to the pan with broccoli rabe and return to medium-high heat. Add cubed butter and reserved pasta water 1/4 cup at a time, tossing pasta often until a light sauce forms. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve.

THE RESURRECTIONISTS

with

Larrikin Entertainment presents the world premiere of this dark comedy

Alita Powell plays Magda in The Resurrectionists

A

fter a few years hiatus, Larrikin Entertainment is staging their first production since 2019. The Resurrectionists was written by Calgary-based Meg Braem, who visited the Yukon during the play’s production. Larrikin artistic executive producer Katherine McCallum is excited to be spearheading the dark comedy’s world premiere in the Yukon. The play is a period piece set in mid-19th century Kingston, Ontario. The main character, Magda, is determined to be a doctor, and goes to great lengths to remove the barriers that stand in her way. It’s described as a “darkly humourous gothic tale of tragic romance and anatomical ambition.” Braem got the idea of writing the play after attending a history of medicine conference where a student presented a paper on grave-robbing at Queens University in Kingston. Medical students once engaged in body snatching so they could carry out studies in anatomy. “I thought man, this would make such a fun play,” Braem says. Braem then read of a dark time in the university’s past when women were not allowed to enrol in medicine, then permitted for a short time, then disallowed again. She decided to combine the two ideas to write a humourous play that reflects on how the culture of death and the ethics of medicine evolve to reflect the values of the time. Magda is the character who drives the play, Braem says. The character was also a big factor in why McCallum committed to producing the play even before it was finished. cont’d on page 14 ...

The Resurrectionists ... cont’d

Playwright Meg Braem PHOTOS: Manu Keggenhoff Photography

Calvin Laveck as Andrew and Ben Charland as William in The Resurrectionists “The Resurrectionists really struck me because the character of Magda is so strong and determined and funny,’ says McCallum. Magda is also part of what drew director Brian Dooley to the play. He worked with Braem as a dramaturg during the development of The Resurrectionists. He has great confidence and trust in her as a playwright. “This is a love story,” he says, “But it’s also a story about a woman being empowered, empowering herself through her curiosity, her passions, and her desire to learn on an equal footing with men.” The production of The Resurrectionists was delayed for 10

months or so due to COVID-19. Now that it’s underway, everyone involved appreciates the relative freedom of rehearsing in the Yukon. The cast is able to move freely in the rehearsal room without masks. “We’re excited, the actors are just beside themselves,” says McCallum. “I couldn’t get over having a normal rehearsal process,” Braem says. “Part of me was like, ‘this is a light in the midst of a long, dark time.’” Most of the cast and crew are Yukoners, and both McCallum and Dooley rave about the local talent. “What really excites me

about producing theatre the most is putting a team together where you don’t have to produce much,” McCallum says of the cast and crew. “I found an enormous generosity and sensitivity from everyone involved, the actors and production people,” Dooley says. “They’ve been open and responsive, they’ve brought their talent and skills to this and everyone gets along. There’s a great spirit of collaboration within the room which is what I try to instill.” In addition to an eight-day run in Whitehorse, the play will also be staged at the Globe Theatre in Atlin, the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture Ballroom in Dawson,

the St Elias Convention Centre in Haines Junction, and the Recreation Centre in Watson Lake. “I think I might actually be certifiable,” McCallum says of the idea to take such a large cast and crew on the road. However, McCallum feels it’s important to share the production in communities beyond Whitehorse. She reasons that Larrikin Entertainment received a fair amount of public funding so she’d like to reach a broader audience. “I do think the communities deserve to see some of the spoils of what we are blessed with,” she reasons. “We get lots of money to make awesome stuff happen.”

Braem and McCallum both express gratitude for the opportunity to premiere The Resurrectionists in the Yukon. “I’m beside myself with relief and excitement,” McCallum says, “I just feel lucky – super lucky — that we can do this.” “It’s the best,” Braem affirms. “Now I feel like all new work should be premiered in the Yukon.” Tickets for Yukon Arts Centre performances are available at yukontickets.ca. Meet Ramses!

July - October 2021

Ramses is a 9-month-old, male, Medium Mixed Breed. He can be quite shy when first meeting with people, but once he warms up he is a little goofball and loves to play! Ramses has a thick woolly coat that will require regular brushing, and with that thick coat he can be a wonderful winter adventure buddy, he knows his obedience basics but would benefit from additional training (eg leash work) and socialization, however, he is a fast learner and will do great with consistency and patience, also he would benefit from moderate exercise. Ramses would do well with older children, and with the proper introduction with other dogs but it is unknown how he is with cats. If you are interested in adopting Ramses, please fill out an online application https://humanesocietyyukon.ca/adoptions/dog/ramses If you already have a pre-approved application with us within the last year, call 633-6019 to put your application towards him.

THE WONDERS OF OUR TERRITORY

with

Manus Hopkins

Manus Hopkins is a Whitehorse- and Toronto-based journalist, musician and lover of heavy metal and cats.

British folk-noir duo Wonders of the Yukon take inspiration from the scenery and peacefulness of the Yukon

“That beauty and that wilderness just really seems to fit with the music we make.” While he hasn’t made it up quite this far yet, Campbell did visit Canada with his wife around 12 years ago when they did a road trip across the Alberta Rockies from Calgary to Jasper. “It was fabulous,” he says. Campbell was surprised to have media from the Yukon reach out to his band, and didn’t get what he was expecting when he was quizzed about the territory in a radio interview. He thought he would be talking about the band’s recently released single, and was completely caught offguard, though he admits it was quite funny.

W

onders of the Yukon frontman Andy Campbell lifts up his guitar to his webcam to display a pin of the ubiquitous Klondike miner seen on the license plates of Yukoners, and many more places, on his guitar strap. “I just got that off the internet,” he says with a chuckle. Though his band is from West Yorkshire, England, and has never been to the Yukon, a shared fascination with the territory’s mystical aura—the “nature, wilderness and rugged beauty”— between he and his bandmate Dave Langdale led the two to land on the name Wonders of the Yukon, after learning the band name Yukon Territory was already taken. “I kind of knew vaguely that it was a place in the states—or in Canada, sorry,” he says, adding that the name Wonders of the Yukon sounds sort of sciencefiction, like something out of Flash Gordon, and that he could picture himself opening a magazine and seeing “Wonders of the

It’s definitely our kind of place since we’re both into nature.” Campbell says at a certain point in their lives, he and Lang-

dale had become “disillusioned” and quit music altogether, before meeting through their wives and building a friendship. When they decided to write together, and went on to perform and record, things were different, and the overall feel was more fun and less risky, in that they were no longer trying to make a career out of it. As Campbell entered middle

age, he came to a reflective, existential point of his life, and found himself reflecting on the fact that he’d lived more life than he had in front of him. The idea of a peaceful, tranquil spot where time can seem to stand still was an image that helped keep him grounded, which is where part of his fascination with the Yukon came from.

In March, Wonders of the Yukon released a new single titled “Rachel (And All The Goofs And The Stars),” a song that shows a slight departure from the band’s usual sound, incorporating more upbeat melodies and pop elements. Campbell was pleased with how people reacted to the change of pace, and while he doesn’t want to jinx it, there are a few reasons he’d like the single to push Wonders of the Yukon forward. “If lockdown ends and we become a bit more successful and we could come and play a date in the Yukon, how great would that be?” To keep up with Wonders of the Yukon, head over to their Facebook page at https://www. facebook.com/wondersoftheyukon/. n

luane National Park and Reserve is a land of epic proportions that beckons extreme adventurers to its rugged landscapes. They scale Canada’s tallest mountains, navigate remote white water, and crush multi-day hikes to glaciers. And then there are those of us looking for a wilderness experience a few notches lower on the intensity scale. While Brook Land-Murphy is no stranger to long hikes and swiftly flowing river trips, starting a family with husband Malcolm changed how they approach backcountry adventures. “It’s more challenging once you have kids, everything changes,” says the Whitehorse-based mom and outdoor enthusiast. “But we were determined that we would find ways to continue being able to enjoy the outdoors and expose our kids to that as well.” So when her husband headed out for his annual solo trip in early July, Land-Murphy decided to pull out the kids’ wee backpacks and her own giant one and head to St. Elias Lake in Kluane National Park and Reserve with their daughters — Ellie, 6, and Meg, 4 — for an overnight hiking adventure. “We’re so lucky to have so many options here in the Yukon and, what an amazing thing to have a trail to a beautiful alpine lake that’s less than four kilometres.” The St. Elias Lake trailhead is 60 kilometres south of Haines Junction off the Haines High-

The trail then leads into a coniferous forest before descending into a sub-alpine valley of dwarf birch and willow. Near the lakeshore there’s a camping area with four tent pads, a fire pit and outhouse. “I liked the distance. And of course, it’s beautiful … it gets

nice views of the mountains coming in,” says Land-Murphy. “And then the campsite being right on that lake is gorgeous, too. So it’s really high return on a relatively low amount of effort.” While she was carrying most of the gear for the three, the kids helped by shouldering their own lunches, water and sleeping pads. The trail also easily accommodates all-terrain strollers with sturdy tires. When hiking with

young kids, Land-Murphy recommends keeping it fun, taking the time to make the (many) stops they need on the trail, and considering what activities you’ll do once you get to camp. “We brought in their flower books, and were busily ID’ing flowers … it’s a nice way for them to pay attention to their surroundings too and to learn a bit more about their natural environment.”

During spring and early summer, wildflowers of the area are showing off their eclectic shapes and colours. Binoculars come in handy for spotting wildlife like bear, moose, beaver, spruce grouse, loons, ducks and mountain goats. The lake is the perfect place for cooling off on a hot day or even catching a Dolly Varden for supper. There is a canoe cont’d on page 23 ...

Late season visitors are treated to the warm brilliance of fall foliage. St. Elias Lake is a manageable and rewarding day hike or overnight experience that can be a great stepping stone for gauging how your kids manage in the backcountry, or just a beautiful destination in and of itself. For Land-Murphy, “In the end, what really matters is that we’re outside together.” n
