Spring has finally arrived in Minnesota. Lakes are finally warming up, drivers are preparing for the race season, and the enormous root beer sign has started spinning after a long winter at The Drive In Restaurant in Taylors Falls, Minnesota. It’s time to grease back that hair, lace up those saddle shoes, and take a trip down memory lane to the most nostalgic and delicious drive in the west side of the St. Croix River has ever seen. Since 1956, hot rods have been filling the sixteen stall drive in to get the juiciest burgers and sweetest root beer from poodle skirt wearing waitresses. Some things never change, and the Vitalis family recognized that craving the simpler times is one of them. Wade Vitalis, an old customer turned new owner, revived this car hop in 1988 and it MAY 2016
has been thriving on the restaurant scene as one of the best ever since. From their farm-to-plate, melt in your mouth food you can smell sizzling on the grill from miles away, to their eighteen-hole miniature golf course you cross their bridge to meet, The Drive In Restaurant is a top destination in the Midwest. It’s the most to say the least.
respect for vintage to bring the smells, tastes, and sounds of the fifties back. He kept the iconic sign, poodle skirts, root beer and burgers, but with his own home-town spin.
Wade opened the familiar doors twenty-eight years ago after returning home to his quaint river valley after spending years on the island of Maui where he worked as a restaurant’s general manager. With experience and a business degree in hand, Wade jumped on the opportunity to open up the doors of a once franchised Frost Top. Wade teamed up with his wife and sister with new ideas and a WWW.WHEELSOFTHUNDER.NET

The seventeenthousand pounds a year of hand-packed custom specification ordered ground beef reach the picnic tables of The Drive In Restaurant from WW Johnson Meat Company that’s been producing butcher shop quality since 1946, their bison comes from only ten miles away, and it’s an even shorter trip for their healthy, organic produce. The Drive In Restaurant’s buns are from a rare local scratch bakery that makes the taste and texture even more unique. Wade values fresh, organic food, and this certainly is an essential mouthwatering factor. They don’t even need to add sugar to their homemade coleslaw because Minnesota soil provides all the nutrients that add up to deliciousness. PAGE 6
There’s no better pair to popular items like patty melts and grilled chicken than their 120-pound sugar per batch (the rest of the recipe is kept secret), freshly made root beer. It’s no secret, though, that the Taylors Falls water has a hand in making this root beer the best you’ll ever taste whether it’s in a frosty mug, float, or freeze. Local and fresh home-made food isn’t the only thing that pulls people in from nearby neighborhoods and faraway countries alike. It’s the total experience. In 1995 every kids’ dream came true when Wade added an eighteen-hole miniature golf course with ponds and waterfalls, allowing families to eat and play. Wade wanted The Drive In to be a total family experience where kids could freely run around while customers chowed down at the picnic tables on the patio and admired

the frequent visits of hot rods and bikes, all while Elvis sings to everyone through the outdoor speakers. he Drive In Restaurant isn’t only an experience for their customers, but also for their staff. Wade takes pride in helping the young people who grow his business also grow. When you look around you’ll see Wade teaching his staff of teenagers values in business and serving their community.

There’s a lot of excitement in the future of The Drive In Restaurant – hopefully in your own neighborhood! Within the past couple of years, the Vitalis’ have set up shop in Milltown and Grantsburg, Wisconsin where the nostalgia is also captured in classic old buildings and root beer signs that are soon to be spinning. Another nine holes are in the works for Taylors Falls, and their very own orange cream soda will soon be in mugs. These additions are sure to bring even more awards to the list of existing ones like “Best of the Twin Cities” and grabbing a high spot in “Best of Summer” guides. Drive on in with your old vehicle and save ten percent, and if you have a kid in the back you’ll receive a two-for-one coupon. When the old root beer sign is spinning on the weekend during the summer,

WRITTEN BY Tom Edwards
A Look Back at Don Prudhomme’s Amazing Career
PHOTOGRAPHY BY Tom Edwards
Don “The Snake” Prudhomme has one of the most appropriate nicknames in sports. Some nicknames just fit. Yogi, for example. It was a name Don didn’t like initially but, as he has said in interviews, he came to enjoy it. Long-time drag racing and collector car announcer Bill Stephens had an idea years
win at the Smokers March Meet, a legendary race in Bakersfield, CA. In 1965 Prudhomme made racing history. Behind the wheel of Roland Leong’s “Hawaiian Dragster” he became the first driver to win the Winternationals and the U.S. Nationals in the same season. That’s a tough assignment now and there are a
ago that I liked a lot. He pointed out Hollywood has the Oscars and the music business has the Grammys so for drag racing Bill thought there should be a Coolie award established for the unquestionably coolest people in drag racing. No surprise here, Bill has Don Prudhomme on the top of his list. I agree, along with a legion of Don Prudhomme fans.
lot more races on the schedule. Four seasons after his first U.S. Nationals at Indy, he did it
again. The following season The Snake (say it with me) was in the Indy winner’s circle. I n 1973 Don was driving a ‘Cuda Funny Car. Guess how he did at the U.S. Nationals. Correct; he won for his fourth Indy race. The next season saw him in the Army ‘Cuda fuel coupe. No surprise here, he won the U.S. Nationals for the fifth time and added a win at the Gatornationals in Florida. In 1975 Don became the first Funny Car driver into the 6 second zone. Of the 8 NRHA races that year he won 6 of them. As America celebrated its Bicentennial in 1976, The Snake celebrated by winning 7 of 8 races. Everyone in drag racing knew if Don Prudhomme was in the other lane, your chances of winning were somewhere between very slim and zero. 1977 proved to be another banner year. He won the U.S. Nationals for the sixth time and earned his third consecutive Funny Car championship. The next season Prudhomme won his fourth
It didn’t take Don a long time to establish he knew what he was doing on a drag strip. In 1962 the 20 year old driver of the Greer-Black-Prudhomme Top Fuel dragster earned his first

title in a row. At that point The Snake could have changed his nickname to Butter. He was on a roll. The highlight of the 1980 campaign took place at the Gatornationals when The Snake set a new NHRA elapsed time record with a blistering 5.93 second run. In 1981 he drove to two more national event wins. Driving the Pepsi Challenger Trans Am for 1982 Don re-set the elapsed time mark with a 5.63 second run in Indy and added the first 250 MPH Funny Car pass at the Baton Rouge, LA race. At the 1987 Gatornationals his Trans Am brought him to the winner’s circle. In 1988 he established another Funny
Car elapsed time record with a 5.305 showing on the Seattle Washington time slip. Sweeping the Bud Shootout and winning the U.S. Nationals for the seventh time made the 1989 season memorable.
The start of a new decade saw The Snake back where it all began, in the seat of a Top Fuel dragster. In 1991, showing he hadn’t lost touch with how to drive the long skinny cars
he earned three more national event wins in seven final rounds. As fans, his 1994 “The Snake’s Final Strike” season was something my wife Cathy and I enjoyed seeing get started at the Winternationals in Pomona, CA,
the birthplace of drag racing. He finished the season second in points. Moving to the ownership side of a race team Don hired second generation racer Larry Dixon to drive his dragster. It proved to be a great choice. Larry won the Bud Shootout, the U.S. Nationals and was named the NHRA Rookie of the Year. The Snake had a knack for selecting drivers that would be chosen for that award. His Funny Car driver, Ron Capps, won it for the 1997 season. In 1998 Capps went on to win five races and Larry Dixon joined his dad, Larry, Sr. as Top Fuel winners at the season opening Winternationals. Also in 1998 my wife and I were at game three of the World Series; my New York Yankees and the San Diego Padres. Shortly before the game started, Larry Dixon and Ron Capps sat in front of us. I told them I’m a member of the NHRA and we had a nice conversation. As a memorabilia collector I was pleased to get a commemorative World Series envelope at the game.
I saw Baseball Hall of Fame writer Phil Collier and asked him to autograph it. When I asked Dixon and Capps to sign it, Capps looked at it and said “Phil Collins is here! Is he singing the National Anthem”? I had to break the news that the autograph Ron was looking at was Phil Collier and I don’t think he sings. Great writer though. I asked Ron and Larry if The Snake was at the game. They told me he was and where he was sitting. Between innings The Snake signed the envelope too. I’ll guess there aren’t a lot of World Series envelopes autographed by member of the baseball Hall of Fame and the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. The following season saw Dixon break the 4.50 second barrier with a 4.486 run in Houston, Texas. The 2000 season marked Don’s inevitable selection as a member of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. 2002 was the 40th anniversary of Don Prudhomme Racing. Larry Dixon went to 19 final rounds, winning 9 and his first Top Fuel championship.
He must have enjoyed doing that; he did it again the following year with 8 wins in 13 final rounds. In 2005 Dixon won the U.S. Nationals for the third time. Do you think Don Prudhomme enjoyed being at Indy? That season Don’s Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson, Jr. opened the season with a Winternationals victory. The 2007 race in New Jersey had Dixon and Johnson earning wins to give The Snake his fourth “Double Up”. In 2010 Don Prudhomme decided it was time to call it a career. He retired with 6 championships and 112 race wins. An amazing career. I thought it was very cool that
The Snake and Tom “The Mongoose” McEwen had small roles in the feature film Snake and Mongoose. That DVD is a part of my drag racing collection.
During our careers my wife and I worked in San Diego, CA and that placed us not too far from Don’s shop and offices in Vista. Once a year Don had an open house at Snake Racing and it was always a fun get together. Seeing The Snake’s first prominent race car, the Greer-BlackPrudhomme dragster next to the Final Strike Top Fuel car he drove was a graphic showing of how much drag racing had evolved over the years. Wall to wall race cars and hot rods. Good times.

PRITCHETT
To COMPETE AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS Avon, IN (April 20, 2015) - Leah Pritchett will continue to compete in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag
Racing Series driving the Nitro Ninja Top Fuel Dragster owned by the Lagana family at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods this coming weekend in Charlotte, NC. The dragster will be primarily sponsored by FireAde 2000, with associate backing from Boninfante Friction and Aerodine Composites Group. Up until last week, Pritchett was driving under the Bob Vandergriff Racing powerhouse, and even won her first NHRA Top Fuel Wally at the CARQUEST NHRA Nationals in Phoenix, AZ just a few weeks ago. Last Monday, team owner Bob Vandergriff Jr. shocked the drag racing community when he announced his immediate retirement, leaving Pritchett to explore new opportunities with other teams.

“It has been a whirlwind of a week, but continuation of my pursuit to compete in Top Fuel has been made possible by FireAde 2000, with joint efforts of longtime partners Boninfante Friction, Aerodine Composites, and of course the Lagana family. Having partners able to come in clutch at the last moment enables me to enter one more race at this time, and will help me stay relevant in the NHRA Mello Yello Series Championship Point standings,” said Pritchett. “This will also buy me a bit more time to work on sufficient funding for the rest of the season to compete with a readily available team.” Pritchett began her partnership with FireAde 2000 when they signed on to be a multi-race sponsor of Pritchett’s BVR dragster for 2016. Although circumstances have changed, the manufacturer of innovative, and environmentally friendly firefighting, tank cleaning, and dust control products have stepped up to support Pritchett for this unique NHRA event. “Just as the FireAde products continue to surpass industry standards, whether fighting blazing wildfires on the land, in the oil fields, or with a can of FireAde 2000 that should be in every garage or household, they continue to exceed my expectations. FireAde is helping me get through this high temperature of a time, and as a dedicated partner, I look forward to representing them as best I can for as long as am I able to.” Ron Thames, CEO and Founder of FireAde is also excited about this weekend stating, “In a short time Leah has proved to be an incredible ambassador for our company, on and off the track, and we are pleased to be able to continue our partnership with her and support her efforts during this time”. Pritchett is grateful for the opportunity to race this weekend in Charlotte and not let her many fans down who have supported her at a track that has delivered multiple Wallys in the Pro Mod division, and numerous round wins in Top Fuel over the past years. APR 2016
“Beyond working alongside and being close friends with the Laganas, I feel fortunate to bring the proper resources to their operation to compete at this event. Experiencing this portion of my journey with people I know, respect, and trust, makes this quick turnaround of a time, that much more rewarding.” Although the Nitro Ninja team competes on a limited NHRA schedule, the FireAde backed Top Fuel entry, with John Stewart as Crew Chief, has a proven track record of being a quick and consistent contender. Ironically Pritchett will be driving the same dragster that she competed against just two weeks ago at the famed NHRA Gatornationals in the first round, driven by nitro newcomer Tripp Tatum. “I will even have a couple of my former crew members from my BVR dragster driving down and working on the car with me this weekend.” The NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods gets underway Friday with the Nitro qualifying sessions at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (EST.) Television coverage will be on FOX Sports 1 with qualifying coverage on Saturday at 10 p.m. and eliminations Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (EST.)

Springfield, Ill (April 19, 2016) - Not only will Tim Wilkerson be competing at the NHRA Four-Wide
Nationals presented by Lowes Foods, but his son Daniel will also be behind-the-wheel of a Nitro Funny Car. Tim will be driving his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang this weekend in Charlotte, NC and Daniel will be in the Brian Stewart Nitro Funny Car.
“I was just excited to finally be able to watch the Four-Wide Nationals from the stands. I don’t get to travel to this race since I work in public accounting and it’s usually held during tax season. Now to be driving in the event is amazing,” said Daniel. The last NHRA Mello-Yello Series race Daniel competed in was St. Louis back in 2013. The last event he participated in was a match race against Tim in Cordova last year. Brian Stewart’s Funny Car that Daniel’s driving this weekend is actually the car that Tim Wilkerson won with at the NHRA race in Phoenix earlier this year. Tim sold “Bessie” to Stewart before unveiling his new Murf McKinney chassis at Las Vegas. “I’m excited to have Daniel driving in the NHRA again. I think this will be a really good experience for him,” admitted Tim. “I really want to thank Brian Stewart for giving Daniel the opportunity to drive his car in Charlotte.” The NHRA Four-Wide Nationals is a once a year spectacle for fans, that can also be tricky for drivers to conquer with double the competition and two Christmas Trees to watch. Daniel believes his long break in driving will actually be an advantage for him. “I don’t have a regular starting line routine, so when it comes to zoning in on the right tree and lights, I think I will be fine,” said Daniel. “Don’t get me wrong though; I’ll be down at the starting line doing my homework on Thursday night. I picked a heck of a race to make my return to driving.” Tim is one of those drivers who fell victim to the four-wide tree confusion at the 2015 event. He lost during the first round after leaving the starting line late. “I really was never a fan of four-wide racing, but I’m warming up to it,” said Tim. “We have to look at it as another race in the series on the way to the championship. I’ve put the unfortunate event of last year’s race behind me and I’m ready to go for the win this year.” And who will family matriarch Krista be cheering for at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals: husband or son? “I don’t think she cares as long as we are both safe and sound at the end of the day,” said Tim. The NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods gets underway Friday with the Nitro qualifying sessions at 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (EST.) Television coverage will be on FOX Sports 1 with qualifying coverage on Saturday at 10 p.m. and eliminations Sunday at 4:30 p.m. (EST.) MAY 2016

Wilkerson WINS
SECOND RACE OF THE SEASON AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
Concord, NC (April 24, 2016) – Tim Wilkerson drove his Levi, Ray & Shoup Nitro Funny Car to the
Winner’s Circle at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowe’s Foods. The victory on Sunday marked Wilkerson’s second win of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series and his 20th career win. Wilkerson came into race day qualified No. 8 with a 3.970 E.T. at 319.07 mph. This is his first FourWide Nationals win and an accomplishment he is proud of. “I got this off my bucket list,” Wilkerson said. “I’ve been in the finals twice here, so I am really happy to get it done,” said Wilkerson. “The whole year has really been exciting; especially with the new TV package and the way everything has been going for us. The Four-Wide is really a neat deal, especially since I won.”

Wilkerson powered past the competition in the final round with a performance of 3.967/315.56 in his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang. He was followed across the finish line by Cruz Pedregon with a 3.995/313.37,and then Ron Capps and Matt Hagan coming in third and fourth. Wilkerson’s machine was the top Funny Car on race day, finishing first in all three quads he raced. He opened with a win against Jeff Diehl, top qualifier Alexis DeJoria and series points leader Robert Hight. In the round two quad he outran Pedregon, Courtney Force and Jeff Diehl. “We were the fastest car out there every round and I was pretty proud of that,” said Wilkerson. “I told my guys: that’s one thing you need to be proud of. You got money running out your ears at those two big camps over there, but you guys were the fastest dogs out there every round. You need to be proud of that.” This is the best start to a season Wilkerson has experienced and he credits his crew and their hard work ethic. “We work hard. I have a great bunch of kids on my crew. The other teams may out-spend us, but they will never out work us,” said Wilkerson. “My guys really do try hard and have a lot of heart.” Wilkerson is one of the few drivers who also tunes his own car. He did double-duty this weekend helping out his son Daniel, who drove Brian Stewart’s Nitro Funny Car. “Yeah, I had my plate full. I left my trailer at 10:45 last night if that tells you anything. I was up late working on the time curves for Daniel’s car as well as mine,” said Wilkerson. “Those poor kids over there had two lines crossed and the blower safety switch caused the car to shut off in round one. Daniel had a good car; it was going to go a 4.05, so he would have easily been in the second round of racing. But that is how you learn. I’m really proud of those kids over there.” This win at the Four-Wide Nationals pushes Wilkerson up to the No. 4 position in points in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Standings. The next race for Wilkerson is the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series is the Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston, TX April 29 – May 1.

SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT
DOUBLES-UP AT NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS
Concord, NC (April 24, 2016) – Summit Racing Equipment put two drivers in the Winner’s Circle at
the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods. Jason Line won his third race in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series this year and the fifth race in a row for KB Racing in Pro Stock. Tim Wilkerson drove his Nitro Funny Car to his second win this season.
JASON LINE Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS
Sunday’s victory marks the 40th career Pro Stock win for Line. This was also the fifth straight final round this season for the two-time Pro Stock world champion. Line came into race day the No.3 qualifier with a 6.584 E.T. at 211.10 mph. This is the first time Anderson has won the Four-Wide Nationals. “It’s really a big deal and exciting to win here at home. It is tough to win the four-wide and I have never won the four-wide. I won’t say that I don’t like it, but I have never been very successful at this race,” said Line. “We are taking a lot of pride in this win because we probably had more changes to make engine-wise, than everybody else did. So it feels very good and it is special and as you get older; you realize how difficult it is to win these races and it becomes more and more special.” In the final round quad, Line posted a winning time of 6.565/211.33 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro and finished in front of teammate Bo Butner, who trailed with a 6.591/210.77 in his Jim Butner Auto Camaro. Drew Skillman and Chris McGaha, also driving Camaros, were third and fourth in the quad final. PHOTOGRAPHY BY & WRITTEN BY Nicole Clark-Erickson, Aries Media LLC

Line made his way to the final by beating Kenny Delco, Vincent Nobile and V. Gaines in the opening quad and then held off Skillman, Delco and defending world champ Erica Enders in the round two quad. Line leaves the NHRA FourWide Nationals No. 1 in points in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Standings.
GREG ANDERSON Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro SS
Greg Anderson came into race day as the No. 1 qualifier for the second time this season with a 6.576 E.T. at 210.41 mph. In the first round quad Anderson ran 6.562/211.99 defeating Chris McGaha, Allen Johnson and Shane Tucker. In the second round quad Anderson was defeated by Chris McGaha, Bo Butner and Deric Kramer. “We had a problem on the race track and we had to be first pair and we haven’t been anywhere near the first pair all weekend,” said Anderson. “The track is just not the same for first pair and we just overestimated it and we just got too aggressive.” This is the only race of the year where four cars race instead of two and this presents many unique obstacles for drivers. One of the biggest hurdles is having two Christmas Trees and four staging lights, which can cause some confusion.
MAY 2016
“Well, the problem was the guy in the left lane staged and then he rolled right through the light or something. You are sitting there staging and all you know is that the stage lights are all on and then they were all off and then the tree went on. So you are confused, but all you can do is stay on the limiter and wait and see if the tree comes on,” confessed Anderson. With this race, Anderson has now surpassed Warren Johnson for the most consecutive starts without a DNQ at 304 races. He is only second to John Force with 395 consecutive races. Anderson has not had a DNQ since 2002. Anderson leaves the Four-Wide Nationals No. 2 in points in the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Standings.
