Cruise for GREAT PEOPLE AND NICE CARS Written By and Photography By </ Tom Edwards >

n article in the September 22, 2016 edition of the Forest Lake Times had this headline: “Community to come together to benefit fallen heroes”. That was all this veteran needed to read before going to the Cruise for Troops website. The Home page features: “Our Mission – Cruise for Troops, as part of the Tribute To The Troops 501c3 Non-Profit organization, pays tribute to our fallen soldiers while raising money to help fund the education of the children who are left behind. Whether it is a hero’s death in combat or a veteran suicide the aftermath the children and families must endure lasts a lifetime. Our goal is to honor the sacrifices made, help restore a sense of normalcy to the families left behind and ease a financial burden while providing a solid education foundation for their children’s future”. What an honorable endeavor. What began as a tribute to this nation’s troops with a 35 car get-together among friends has evolved into the largest car and motorcycle cruise in the Midwest. Much to the delight of many, it has become a day celebrated by thousands. The 8th Annual Cruise was on September 24, 2016 with Running Aces Casino and Racetrack in Columbus serving as the registra PAGE

tion site. Their parking lot had a large section set aside for the display of hundreds of great looking hot rods, muscle cars, classic cars and motorcycles. Shortly after we arrived my wife Cathy and I saw the USA-1 Monster Truck drive over and park on top of 2 compact (now very compact) cars. When I saw that my first thought was “Finally, a truck that is a perfect fit for a Minnesota winter”. Cathy pointed out it wouldn’t fit in our garage so I’ll have to pass on getting one. The 18 wheel Operation Respect rig is what we saw next. It features a Freedom Isn’t Free banner, a replica of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a POW/MIA flag. When you see a great looking white 1950’s Pontiac Bonneville with skirts and a continental kit, you know you’re at a car show that will have plenty of great looking rides. I should point out now that virtually every car, truck and motorcycle there was in like-new condition. When was the last time you saw a Red Ford Falcon convertible? If you were at this event you would have seen one of the best. DEC 2016

When I spotted an Oldsmobile hot rod with a hood vent, I know it was time for another photo. Two Edelbrock carburetors poking through your hood is a clear indication that the engine they’re sitting on top of isn’t what was in the car when it rolled off the assembly line. A black 1960 Chevy Impala with an NHRA sticker in a back window told me that car had been a drag strip more than once. Going with a more ‘just the way it looked on the showroom floor’ approach was a 1957 white over yellow Ford Fairlane. Speaking of Fords, a blue Cobra with a 427 that barely fit under the hood was eye catching. Talk about a great horsepower to weight ratio. Well done Carroll Shelby. I liked the ‘Land of the Free Because of the Brave’ tire cover I saw. True that. For a nice color combination on 2 cars rolling in, a yellow Chevy hot rod followed by a gold Falcon was a nice look. As a long time car fan I have thought for years every car show should have at least a few ’32 Fords and this one had that and more.

A green fender less hot rod had a classic look. I’m pretty sure it didn’t have the original engine. I saw another well done yellow and white paint scheme; this time it was on a ’56 Chevy that had a stock appearance except for very shiny chrome wheels.

Quite possibly the vehicle with the most appropriate name was a red Dodge Power Wagon. We’re talking about a truck that just looks like it has power and more power. If you need a tree stump pulled or a house moved you may want to consider a Power Wagon. When I was a kid there was a large scale model you could by: The Big T by Monogram. As a draw to sell them, it was outside a store that sold them at a mall not far from where I lived. The Big T was a red ’23 Ford T bucket and I saw a car that could have passed for a close relative. I’m sure every Mopar fan enjoyed seeing a black Dodge Charger that had a paint job that looked deep enough to dive in to. I have always like panel wagons so a red ‘57 Chevy caught my eye. For most car fans, that year Chevy as a panel wagon, Nomad, convertible or coupe is a winner. A red and black Chevy pickup with a sun visor took the lead in a 3 truck group that rolled in. Let’s hear it for pickups. For me, a sun visor is just a great addition for cars and trucks from the ‘50’s and ‘60’s era.

As the day progressed the red ’23 Ford T bucket must have wanted some company and 2 more arrived. A yellow car followed by a burgundy convertible with the black top that was up were lookin’ good. I’m sure every GTO fan checked ‘The Judge’, an orange version of that classic. I’m a baseball fan and as a teenager I still remember going to the Polo Grounds, the home of the New York (now San Francisco) Giants from 1911 until their last game of the 1957 season and the home of the New York Mets for their first 2 years. I went from Connecticut to New York in a ’53 Cadillac so seeing a black top down convertible from back in the day brought back some fond memories. It was nice to see the 2 wheel set have plenty of space for their rides. Having followed drag racing since the 1960’s a front engine fuel injected dragster was certainly a nice touch for an amazing array of cars.

During the event raffle tickets were sold and the winner of the drawing was handed the keys to a 2016 Polaris Sportsman 450. The goal of the raffle, to quote of Cruise For Troops site “is looking to be the best ever and we are going to raise a TON of money to help the families of the fallen”. A TON of money sounds about right to me. Frequent Wheels of Thunder readers may recall I mentioned in the Vettes for Vets article that veterans are a sorority/fraternity unlike any other. What was for Cathy and me our first Cruise for Troops event that was confirmed by those responsible for everything that went into this get-together. If you served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam or in more recent times we are brothers and sisters in arms and it is comforting to see how often we have each other’s backs.

While I was on the Cruise for Troops site it was great to see a long list of corporate sponsors, in particular Platinum Sponsors Polaris and Plasti Dip International supporting such a great event and its worthwhile efforts. Those sponsors joined 19 other businesses to help make the 8th Annual Cruise for Troops memorable. The long and interesting list of items available in the silent auction, everything from tickets to a Minnesota Wild game to attending a performance by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra helped raise funds for families of those who have given their all. I’m convinced you can never have too many tee shirts or baseball hats so Cathy purchased one of each with the Cruise for Troops logo that I think Santa will leave under our tree this year. They will be just the right thing to wear to the 2017 Cruise for Troops. I’ll go out on a limb and guess everyone reading this is a fan of cars that fit into one category or another. If that’s the case, allow me to encourage you to visit www.cruisefortroops.org to make sure you will know the date for the 2017 event. Trust me, a good time will be had by everyone there. Bringing a camera is also a good idea. //

Don’t even try to tell “Maria Mustang Sally” Erickson to slow her Mustang down (or slow anything down for that matter). This woman has a passion for life that emanates from every pore in her body. From cars (Mustangs in particular), her family, her job, and giving back to the community, it seems limitless. At age 59, Erickson is comfortable in her own skin and has a made peace with the fact that she isn’t your stereotypical female. But it wasn’t always that way. Growing up in large family with eight brothers, Erickson says she “didn’t stand a snowballs chance of getting out of being into cars.” Growing up, her family lived on the North side of Minneapolis and was “pretty poor.” Erickson remembers her brothers were always working on some old junker. But as a 7 year old girl, Erickson had, as she puts its, “no interest whatsoever in the difference between a 1964 and a 1965 Thunderbird!” Somewhere along the line though, she started paying attention. That led to dating guys who were into cars. “They had the all American muscle cars; Mustangs, Cudas, 442’s and Novas. It didn’t matter, they were into them,” says Erickson. Then at 17, she dated a guy whose brother had a ’65 Mustang. “That’s where my love of Mustangs really started. I wanted that car so bad I couldn’t see straight.” Erickson did not forget about that car. In fact when she met her husband Carl, she told him, “My first car is going to be a 1965 Ford Mustang.” And she was dead serious. They couple has owned several cars since those days but she never let Carl put her name on any of them. “I meant what I said and I was sticking to my guns.” Erickson’s eldest son Lucas found a ’65 and she finally got her Mustang when she was 48 years old. It was a long time coming, but age was not stopping this go-getter of a lady DEC 2016

from enjoying the full experience of a dream come true. “It was my car,” she says proudly. “I bought and paid for it myself.” The car, aptly named Sally, is a 1965 Ford Mustang Coupe with a 302 Engine, C4 Automatic Transmission, 4bbl carb with beefed cam, GT P40 heads-ported out, Magna Flow Headers, and plates that read “65Sally.” The story could end there, but it doesn’t, not even close. “I had my car and couldn’t have been happier,” says Erickson. “I wasn’t even thinking about another one, but these deals they kind of come in and drop in your lap so what are you going to do?” The deal she is talking about is baby #2, a 1978 Ford Mustang Cobra II. This time, it was her son Jesse who found the car. He had planned on keeping it for himself, but with a wife and baby on the way it just wasn’t the practical choice. So, he called up Mom, who of course couldn’t resist saying yes. “I didn’t want to take out a loan to buy it though,” explains Erickson. “I wanted this to be a car that I owned outright and nobody could come and take away from me.” Her solution was to sell leftover gold and silver from her past jewelry business. Luckily, she bought at low prices and sold at very high prices, which enabled her to not only buy the car, but to also pay for needed body work and detailing. “It really didn’t cost me a cent. The car was basically free.” The Cobra, as she calls it, is completely stock (for value reasons), has a 302 Engine with C4 Automatic Transmission and plates that read “78CBRA”. The dash was signed

by John Chun (original designer of the Ford Cobra) one week before he passed away. They say three is a charm so why not say yes when yet another opportunity falls in your lap? That’s just what Erickson did. She says she was with her son on the way to get pizza and drove by an ’06 convertible for sale. “I slammed on by brakes and almost put my son through the windshield! And then when I told my husband Carl, [who by the way has been very supportive and encouraging of Erickson’s car buying all along] he actually said, why to do you need another one? To which I said, because I can!” The two talked it out and in his infinite wisdom, Carl told her, “There are fewer days in front of us than behind us so if you want the damn car, buy the damn car!” That made Erickson the proud owner of not one, not two, but three Mustangs. The 2006 Ford Mustang Convertible “Shelby” has a V6 Automatic Transmission. Erickson says, “It has been completely stock-restored BACK to factory specs…just because.” That might explain the plates that read “Purbred.” Somewhere between the first car and the second car, people started calling Erickson “Mustang Sally.” She says she can’t say for sure but she thinks it started back when they used to promenade cars down the main drag at shows. “As soon as I got in line I would pop in my CD, play Mustang Sally, and crank it up super loud. So I think that’s where I got the name. Plus, it’s a lot easier for to remember Mustang Sally than Maria!” Promenading is not the only driving

Erickson does on the main drag, and she may deny it if you ask her in the wrong company, but she has been know to partake in the occasional street race. “It really isn’t cool and I know it,” she says. “But I can’t help myself.” Erickson says she has never been arrested, ticketed or even pulled over in any of her classic cars. “I’m smart about it. I’m only going to pick a spot that I know is safe, and believe or not we don’t go over the speed limit. It’s not about speed. It’s about whose car is quicker off the line.” Both Erickson and her husband also race at the annual Super Secret Fun Run at Brainerd International Raceway. The race is put on the by the MSRA the last weekend in August and is for members only. This is the only organized race Erickson currently competes in. “Neither of us have any drag strip experience,” she says. “This gives us a chance to get that.” Erickson is self-admittedly car crazy and knows that some people might see her as a little over-the-top (she even named her dog Rear Differential, A.K.A Posi). She confesses that her children were concerned, but only for a time. “All three of my kids have gone from saying, you know Mom, we think you’re taking this to PAGE 18

a level that is really not healthy, to saying, I really get this now!” Her husband gets it too. In fact, she bought him a 1968 GTO for Father’s Day! What might have driven a wedge between some couples, actually bonds these two car lovers together. “We have traveled all over the country with our Mustangs,” Erickson points out. “We did the 50th Anniversary Mustangs Across America run where over 550 Mustangs went from L.A. all the way to North Carolina. In doing this amazing thing we also helped raise over $15,000 for the NC Patriot Guard.” The run ended in grand style for Erickson. Her car was featured in the Mustangs Across America 2015 documentary, and she got a big surprise on the last morning. “They had everyone gather together with their cars and they filmed us all screaming the song Mustang Sally at the top of our lungs in the middle of a parking lot,” Erickson reminisces fondly. “It was SO cool!” To put the icing on the cake, after the run they joined 1600 Mustangs and drove 16 miles, setting a new Guinness Book record for the longest Mustang cruise. When not traveling, the two love wrenching on their cars together.

Being able share a passion as a couple and learn from each other is special and something neither takes for granted, especially Erickson. She admits that growing up she never felt like she fit in. She was a tomboy and liking cars didn’t make things any easier. As an adult, she says that feeling of being different remained. “Carl and I are very involved in our church and even there, I still felt like I didn’t quite fit the mold.” Erickson does point out that this feeling is “on her”, not on others.” “I don’t think people deliberately ostracized me, it was really about me and how I felt different and uncomfortable. I felt very much not a woman because I was into cars.” Things are different now that she has come to embrace the beauty of being her own person, her own kind of woman, and being “different” if you will. “If nothing else, I am going to be an ambassador for women who love cars,” says Erickson. “I never thought there were other women out there like me but I am learning that is not true. There are a lot of women out there who love their cars. It doesn’t matter if it’s a rice burner, American muscle or modern, they just love their cars.” Perfect examples of such women are DEC

2016

Erickson’s “sistas from another mistas”, as she calls them, the MnCarQueenz. This new group of car enthusiasts is made up of all women. “Even though I am probably the only the only woman with an American muscle car, I am really, really proud of this group,” says Erickson. “Most of the women have modern cars but those girls crank on their cars and love on them just the same as I do.” That respect is mutual says Erickson. “This is a group of young women. I am probably the oldest girl in the group but they are interested in my classic cars and what I bring to the table.” There might be age differences and car differences but as Erickson points out, “These ladies are excited about their cars, they’re excited about the newer cars, they’re excited that they are women who found other women who are into cars.” The Car Queenz is only one of the many clubs of which Erickson is a member. She and Carl also belong to the Upper Midwest Region Shelby Club, MSRA, GTSA, and DragLinks. Choosing which clubs to belong to is not something Erickson and her husband take lightly. “We decided that car shows are great, car clubs are wonderful, but if they don’t give back to the community then what’s the point?” DEC 2016

Erickson says they love all of the clubs they belong to and credits them all with doing great things to give back, but the DragLinks is special to them. “We see it as “our club” because when it first started it was just a bunch of long time friends who got together on weekends.” She says the club was great back then but it has turned into so much more. To summarize the club’s philosophy as stated on their website, members are committed to contributing their time and talents to charitable causes they believe in. Erickson stands firmly behind that philosophy adding, “If you are not giving back to the community, why bother?” For Erickson, giving back doesn’t stop with the car clubs. Her job with Hill-Rom (a manufacturer and provider of medical technologies and related services for the health care industry) also allows her to do good things and help others. “I work in the patient financial assistance department which is a really good place for me,” says Erickson. “The devices and equipment are very expensive and people just can’t afford them, especially with all the changes in insurance. It is my job to try to help bridge that gap and help the find ways for them to get the things they need.”

The financial and emotional strain of medical expenses is something that hits home with Erickson. After raising three kids of her own, all with special needs (two with Tourette Syndrome and one with learning disabilities) Erickson’s can relate to the stress and worry her client’s experience. “It is my job to alleviate some of that and to give them hope.” Erickson also gives hope and support to other families who are affected by TS by speaking out and educating others about the neurological disorder. “In 2007, I was the state spokesperson for the MN Tourette Society Association. I wanted to do something to help children and if I could go around talking about TS that’s exactly what I was going to do.” And she did. For a year she traveled around giving speeches at VFW’s, American Legion’s and anywhere else she could. This led to Erickson running for Mrs. Minnesota in 2007 (she ran as Mrs. Blaine). She didn’t win the title but she is okay with that. For her it was a platform to educate people about Tourette Syndrome as well as a chance to make peace with the past. “The point of my running was to check off a box on my bucket list,” she explains. Continue Page 20

“When I was 18 years old, I had a chance to do something like this and I didn’t think I was pretty enough or smart enough. I was a tomboy and just didn’t think I could win.” Erickson says that looking back, what really broke her heart was that she didn’t even give herself a chance. So, she gave herself a do-over. “Sometimes,” she says, “you can go back.” (By the way, she might not have won the title of Mrs. Minnesota but she did win Most Photogenic, Best Pitch book and Mrs. Congeniality. Not too bad for a tomboy!) Erickson says she knows she is blessed. “If I were to die today I would die one happy woman. I’ve been married to the same man for almost 38 years. I have three amazing individuals for children and five adorable grandchildren. I have two beautiful classic cars and one soon to be classic car. I have a beautiful home, a great job and the very best of friends. My life is very, very good!” Her story is one of a blessed person but it is also one of perseverance and passion (on many levels) and in typical Mustang Sally fashion she hopes it touches, inspires or gives hope to even just one person. “If someone out there reads this and thinks to themselves, I’m not alone, then I’ve done something good.” Mission accomplished, Maria, mission accomplished. // PAGE
