A CREW OF VIETNAM VETERANS VISITED THE
SAN DIEGO AUTOMOTIVE
Written By </Tom Edwards>
MUSEUM
The Swift Boat Sailors Association is a fraternity of ‘Brown Water Navy’ veterans that were involved in Swift Boat operations during the Vietnam War. I have been a member for 10 years. We hold a reunion everyother year and for 2017 we were in San Diego. That’s where training for Swift Boat crew members was held and a Swift Boat that was given to the nation of Malta after the war has been returned and restored to operational condition and is now a part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego. For each reunion we make it a point to schedule a number of events that will peg the fun meter. This year one of those activities was a visit to the San Diego Automotive Museum. If you find yourself in San Diego, and the Chamber of Commerce calls it ‘America’s Finest City’ for a reason, do yourself a favor and check out this first class facility. It is in Balboa Park. At 1,200 acres it is the largest urban park in the country and home to 17 museums. The museum’s building was one of many constructed in 1935 as part of the California Pacific International Exposition. The Expo was originally scheduled to run from May 29, 1935 to November 11, 1935. It proved to be a successful and popular event so it reopened on February 12, 1936 and closed for the last time on September 9, 1936.

During World War II the building served as an auxiliary facility for the Navy Medical Center - San Diego. The museum library has more than 4,000 books, 36,000 magazines and 113 magazine titles. Many are available for purchase. If you’re looking to do some research or just want to enjoy some casual reading, the library is a great place to check out. As is the case with other museums, the San Diego Automotive Museum periodically brings in a rotating selection of other vintage cars for their displays. 2013 saw a “60 Years of Corvette” display that consisted of 15 cars that covered the 7 generations from C1’s with a 1954 to a 2014 C7. That newer model can cover a quarter mile in 12 seconds flat right off the showroom floor.

As a member of the National Hot Rod Association I can assure you that is a bunch quicker than the 1954 with a 6 cylinder Blue Flame would need for the same distance. One of the C1’s on display was a near-mint condition white 1959 owned by Bob Brown, a member of the Swift Boat Sailors Association. The 283 cubic inch engine has 2 four barrel Rochester carburetors on the manifold and produces 245 horsepower using hydraulic lifters. It has a 4 speed manual transmission. One of the photos at the “60 Years of Corvette” has a red 2014 in front of a row of the 6 previous generations; all white. I think that shot captures the amazing evolution of America’s sports car.
The graphics the museum used to explain the cars history throughout the exhibit were detailed and informative in their descriptions. The C2’s featured my favorite Corvette, a 1963 split window, a ready-to-race 1965 roadster and a 1967 roadster with a big block 427. The C3’s had the longest run in Corvette history being built from 1968 to 1982. Two C3’s, a 1969 and a 1971 in the museum represented that era. The first C4 was a 1984 sold in March of that year. The production of C4’s ended in 1996. The following year saw the introduction of the first C5; that run finished in 2004. Up next, the C6. It debuted in 2005 and the last car of that generation rolled off the assembly line in 2013. JUL / AUG 2017
The current production model, the C7 was manufactured and released in 2013 and introduced as a 2014 model. As a Star Trek fan I think the 2014 would blend right in on the set of the next movie. In the 2009 film Star Trek, a very young James Tiberius Kirk, decades before he became the Captain of the Starship Enterprise takes a red 1965 convertible Sting Ray out for a drive in Riverside, Iowa. The scene that shows the speedometer has young Kirk hitting a brisk 80 MPH. That’s a little short of warp speed but still impressive for a 10 year old driver. Another film that features a Corvette is Apollo 13. Tom Hanks drives a 1970 coupe. Speaking of astronauts, Alan Shepherd, the first American in space drove his 1957 Corvette to astronaut training school. General Motors became aware of that and gave him a new 1962 after he safely returned to Earth. I’m sure Captain Kirk knows that Corvette is also a classification for one of the craft in Star Fleet Command.

Currently on display, a 1967 Datsun Fairlady in front of a 1953 Jaguar XK 120 isn’t a pair of cars you see every day. The Fairlady name was used on cars sold in Japan and Australia. For the rest of the world they were known as a Datsun Sport. The Jaguar represents the next to the last year for that particular line that began in 1948. Not far from the Jaguar is a car fans of the Roaring 20’s automobiles will enjoy seeing; a 1929 Cord L 29 Brougham. The for-its-time relatively low ground clearance was achieved with the implementation of front wheel drive. That pioneering design concept allowed passengers fortunate enough to be riding in such a great looking automobile to be seated behind, not in front of the drive mechanism. Power was provided by a Lycoming straight 8 and hydraulic brakes, not common in that era, brought the car to a stop. Museum Facility Manager Patrick Heffernan gave my wife Cathy and me a tour of this great looking museum so that certainly made a fun day even better. During our visit he showed us some of the features on what the museum calls “Louie Mattar’s Fabulous $75,000 Car”. To say the 1947 Cadillac is different would be a huge understatement. When was the last time you saw a car that had hydraulic jacks that allow the tires to be changed on the run? Me either. Refilling the radiator and changing the oil on the run are just a few of the features on Louie’s car that aren’t options on anyof the cars I’ve ever seen. No surprise here; it is the world’s endurance record holder.
PAGE

Louie and a team of 2 other drivers were behind the wheel in 5 hour shifts and drove round trip from San Diego to New York and back to San Diego, 6,320 miles from September 20 to the 27th, 1952. Pickup trucks are among the vehicles I enjoy so checking out the 1922 Mack Truck parked outside the museum was on my to do list for the day. The radiator/grill is ornate with: International Motor Co. on the top left side, Mack in the middle and New York, USA on the right. The chain driven truck looks like it would still blend right in on a construction site.

Two wheel enthusiasts will have plenty to see. Happy Days fans will want to make it a point to check out one of the three motorcycles famed builder and stuntman Bud Ekins built for Fonzie that was used on that long running TV show. Ayyyyy, to quote The Fonze. What would a motorcycle display be without an Evel Knievel example? The HarleyDavidson on display here was used in the 1977 film Viva Knievel. How long has it been since you saw a near mint condition 1924 Indian Chief in front of a 1913 Indian advertising banner? The ad lets us know “The Twins the Thing”. Good to know. I’m reasonably certain the $250 price shown sadly, doesn’t apply. To take a look at this great museum on the web go to www.sdautomuseum.com. More photos from the event on page 8 JUL / AUG 2017
