365 days of Copenhagen
A
fter what has been the coldest winter in Denmark for decades, the first signs of early spring has just hit Copenhagen. As we write this, the windows facing the street below us have been opened, letting in a soft breeze and the sound of laughter from the sidewalk café down the street. They’re serving their first cup of outdoor-latte in months and by the sound of it, people are queing up, eager for their first spring time coffee to go. That’s how we know spring is here. When we were children, we knew it had arrived the night we were allowed to go back out to play after we had eaten dinner. These days, it’s when we can go down the street for coffee and sit outside and drink it. It’s the little things as they say. No matter what the season is, Copenhagen always shows its strength and its charm.
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
Whether it’s July and you’re in the park or on the beach with thousands of local Copenhageners, or you’re walking through the Tivoli Christmas market in December, the city always seems to show itself from its best angle. We might be drinking coffee outdoors right now, but that doesn’t mean we don’t miss the intimacy of Copenhagen in winter or eagerly await the opportunity to spend a rainy November day in one of the city’s many museums, cinemas and art exhibitions. In other words, we love Copenhagen 365 days a year and we hope the magazine you’re now holding shows you why. Every year, we make an international edition in English. We want it to be your very own personal tourist guide, telling to you where to go, what to do and when to do it. It’s our aim to provide you with the best possible insight to why
Danes – and Copenhageners in particular – are considered the happiest people on the planet. It might not be the biggest city in the world, but Copenhagen still offers some of the best shopping, entertainment, dining, nightlife and culture – or just living as we like to call it – you’re bound to experience on any trip. Take this magazine and find everything you’re looking for, and hopefully something you didn’t know you were looking for as well. We’ve even included a free map of the city so you don’t get lost along the way. We hope this 10th international edition of WHERE2GO will make you come back to our city. Even when they’re not serving coffee out-of-doors down the street. Enjoy your stay where2go

Henrik Adamsen
Photographer Henrik Adamsen shot our front page fashion spread. He has only just returned to Denmark from a photoshoot in Los Angeles where he got the opportunity to work at the aweinspiring mansion Sheats Goldstein Residence, home to world famous philanthropist James Goldstein. This lavish mansion is legendary and was used for location in films like Charlie´s Angels and The Big Lebowski. “It was just surreal. James Goldstein is wealthy beyond belief. Luckily he is also really into fashion and the house proved to be a spectacular location for our shoot”, Henrik Adamsen tells WHERE2GO. To Adamsen, getting that perfect picture is not just about focusing on whoever is being photographed, but rather to focus on the whole experience.
Benita Marcussen
Benita Marcussen is the woman behind the camera for the guides to Kystbanen the Copenhagen Quarters. Benita got her first camera when she was 13. “I got it from a mail order catalogue. My motivation for becoming a photographer came from such a teenage daydreaming scenario: I saw a photographer in Melrose Place on TV and I really wanted to be like that.”. But Benita´s passion to become a photographer was didn't just come from TV. A sense of freedom and the opportunity to work around the world drew her in. To name a few of those around-theworld shots, Benita and her camera have visited Bangladesh via Danish Church Aid and Qatar for news paper Berlingske Tidende.

Danes: rude without knowing it!
Many Danes have pretty bad manners on the street, in trains and on busses. If they bump into you without apologizing, try to ignore it. They do not apologize to each other either!
Transportation The Metro: all week, all night. Some nightbusses and S-trains available nights as well. Any destination in Copenhagen is probably within the 1+2 zone area. A 2-zone ticket is 23 DKK (2010). Save money with a multi-trip ticket, 10 trips = 135 DKK.
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
Each adult traveller is allowed to take 2 children aged 0-12 with them for free, in busses, S-trains and Metro. All cabs accept international credit cards. At movia.dk you find more info on the 24 hour ticket, 7 day Flexcard and other discounts.
Danish does not have any direct equivalent for please, though sometimes you will hear the word tak. Danes often forget to say please in English, and may inadvertently seem rude.

* In case you travelled to Denmark just to see The Little Mermaid, you might just get a little dissapointed. In May 2010, the world famous statue at Langelinie leaves for China where she will be on display for the World Expo. At the time of writing, there is still no news of any sort of replacement for the young lady.

Whether you are looking for world music, indie rock, string quartets, jazz or opera, Copenhagen has it all. WHERE2Go proudly presents some of the finest venues in town.
VEGA
is one of the top venues in Copenhagen. It is uniquely housed in a beautiful building drawn by renowned Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen. The house was built for the Danish labour movement, to be their head office. And it was, for almost 40 years. VEGA is the home of two separate concert halls in one building. Lille VEGA (Little VEGA), with a capacity of 500 guests, mostly features upcoming bands or semi-known bands. At Store VEGA (Large VEGA), with room for 1500 guests, bands are more popular or just more wellknown. VEGA has had the who´s who of rock and pop on stage:
Prince, Backstreet Boys, Suede and more recently, Arctic Monkeys, Grizzly Bear, Antony & the Johnsons, Florence & the Machine. VEGA also has its very own popular nightclub called Nina Bang, as well as a bar at ground level: Ideal Bar.

The Music When it comes to music, Copenhagen has plenty to offer. We highly recommend a visit to one of the city's many venues.

Koncerthuset is a new concert
hall. Blue, flourescent, meteoric, this cubic building can be seen miles away. The inside is equally mindblowing. The acoustics are impressive – attend one of the many concerts of RadioUnderholdningsOrkestret and be amazed. Most concerts at Koncerthuset are classical concerts, but Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright and others have made unique performances here too.
Operaen
– the new opera house in Copenhagen might not be as famous as the renowned Sydney Opera house drawn by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. Still, Operaen is a spectacular building, drawn by architect Henning Larsen, also a Dane. This building was given as a gift by ship owner and business magnate Mærsk McKinney Møller to Denmark. Operaen is, obviously, a must-visit for tourists with a passion for opera.

Studiestræde has been home to many memorable concerts for more than 20 years. Danes were introduced to Grunge in the early 90´s here: Pearl Jam and The Smashing Pumpkins played their first gigs in Denmark at Pumpehuset. Today, the venue mostly features well-established Danish pop-rock acts.

orget medium rare steaks or french fries sweating saturated fat. 42* RAW, a new shop in the heart of Copenhagen, is offering you a way to revolutionize your eating habits. Proprietor Jesper Ryvang says it is inevitable that raw food will become everyday food in the future. The philosophy behind raw food is simple. No food must be heated beyond 42 degrees Celsius. Anything warmer, will ruin the biochemical structure. Those who believe in this rule of raw food believe humans were never meant to eat heated food at all. Jesper Rydahl explains: “When time began, humans
were herbivores, feeding on raw food only. Today humans are the only species heating their food, and we believe this to be a key factor in the increasing numbers of cancer, cardiovascular and other lifestyle diseases.” You will not find meat, bread, sugar or any dairy products in 42*RAW. But you will find food carefully chosen to nourish your body.

he idea of your bum scantily clad in a bikini bottom in the bright light of spring can be rather intimidating. So why not try a Butt Treat? The treatment tightens and smoothes the skin. Think of it as a sort of upside down facial treatment: steam, peeling, fruit acids followed by refreshing and regenerating masks. A thorough in depth massage helps reduce cellulite. For best results, book three sessions with a one-week interval between each.

he preferred champagne at The Paul is ”R” from Ruinart. Ruinart is the oldest champagne house in the world, and ”R” is in the absolute champagne elite. But it is not one of the most wellknown. A great pity, says restaurant manager Daniel Walter Fumanek:“People happily splurge on Dom Perignon, Mumm and other strip club champagnes just because of the brand. Ruinart is all about quality”.
The menu at The Paul is custom made for champagne. Fumanek explains: “Ruinart complements our light cuisine perfectly. Champagne is a perky drink, and so is the food we serve. We want our guests to leave our restaurant feeling happy and full – not bloated and heavy”.

mong all the delicious wines we offer, this is my personal favourite”, says Maj Kaltoft, restaurant manager and wine purchaser at Famo (Saxogade) and Famo51 (Gammel Kongevej). “This is truly a nerdy wine. Made from the Sangiovese grape, it is 100 % natural. The character of the wine is not obtained in a cask. The character of each vintage is based on the various conditions of that particular year. Nuances in the Sesti Brunello Di Montalcino changes every year – each bottle has a personality of its own”. The wine is environmentally sound too – no chemicals used, sustainable farming.
unique way of drawing wine makes Bistro Boheme a haven for casual sippers ordering wine by the glass. At Bistro Boheme your single glass of wine will not be from a bottle that was opened days ago. The wine menu at Bistro Boheme offers a staggering 32 wines to choose from. Restaurant manager Andreas Haugaards personal favourite is Neckenmarkt Alte Reben Moric 2006 – a wine not sold by the glass. “This Austrian wine is made from local grape Blaufränkisch, and is 100% biodynamic. The wine is nicely balanced: fruit, tannin, acids, with notes of szechuan pepper and pencil, dark berries and soft tannin, burgundy style”, Haugaard says. “Austria has been making wine for centuries, but these wines have only become trendy recently. Quality wine is coming out of Austria, and Neckenmarkt Alte Reben Moric 2006 is really top-of-the-range”. The wine is purchased at local wine store Österreich Vin, right across from Bistro Boheme.

Nightstand Need something to read on your trip back? And why not take home a piece of Danish furniture design with you as well?
Books You have probably heard of Hans Christian Andersen and Karen Blixen. But the Danish authors of today are talented too. Here are some of the best Denmark can muster in print right now. In English, of course.
Danish Architecture since 1754 This book describes the development in Danish Architecture from the royal palace of Amalienborg to the Tietgen Dormitory’s circular building in the new Ørestad. Organized in ten chapters, this book is an introduction to Danish architecture not just for professionals, but for everyone interested in the connection between the building’s history and the development of a society. The Danish Architectural Press 350 DKK Christian Moerk – Darling Jim
The Washington Post wrote : “A spellbinding new novel from Danish-born, Brooklynbased Christian Moerk. Aglow with fairy-tale inflections, this hypnotic, neo-Gothic suspense story unfolds like a hothouse bloom, lush and pungent; it’s a sprig of nightshade, all petals and poison. And it heralds the arrival of an astonishingly gifted storyteller.” And yes, it really is that good. Henry Holt 175 DKK
Piet Hein – Collected Grooks I

Danes The Danish cuisine is famous for open faced sandwiches, Danish pastry, Lurpak butter and bacon. But Danish food has more to offer. While dishes such as Pork and Brown Cabbage and Old Cheese with Aspic requires an acquired taste, most will be able enjoy Danish Meatballs and the numerous tasty fish dishes this small book has to offer.

Design The best of contemporary Danish design.
Ride in style More than 1,3 million kilometers are being pedalled away every day in Copenhagen, so having a decent bike is essential. The modern Copenhagener has enough fashion savvy to want more than a bike that just runs well - it has to get those heads turning in the streets as well. Functionality and wow!factor are elegantly combined in the bikes made by Cykelmageren.
C
ykelmageren was established by Rasmus Gjesing in 1994 and has been working incessantly since on designing and developing custom made bicycles. This has ensured attention from the media around the world - including The New York Times, Wallpaper and Elle Decor. At Cykelmageren all bikes are handmade. The measurements of each customer, the design and functionality of the bike are all key factors in creating a new bike. Your height and inseam length are checked, then you choose frame and colour and finally you pick the features you want on your bike. How many gears? Rear bicycle rack, hand brakes, rear child seat, magnetic lights? All frames are handmade from scratch at the bicycle workshop on Frederiksberg and are sold on the internet or from Cykelmagerens showroom in Store Kongensgade. Venturing into something new, Cykelmageren has now begun making handlebars, brakes, seat posts and hubs. This makes it possible for you to have a 100% custom made bike, a bike that answers all your needs down to the very last itsy bitsy bolt.

Bicycle paths and tte cigare t s ubs
International events like Cop15 and World Outgames drawing thousands of visitors, made 2009 a great year for Copenhagen. But there is still much work to be done, says Lars Bernhard Jørgensen, the director of Wonderful Copenhagen . Words Andrea Bak Illustration Mads Bastell
I
n 2009 Copenhagen made its mark in the world with a bang. President Obama visited twice – even TV-goddess Oprah Winfrey was here. Back home she told millions of American viewers how Danes are happy all the time, and how we all live in designer appartments and munch away on rye bread every chance we get. But Oprah and Obama are gone and the average American viewer yet again believes Copenhagen to be the capital of Sweden. So what happens to Copenhagen now? Lars Bernhard Jørgensen is the managing director of Wonderful Copenhagen. He appreciates the attention Copenhagen got last year. However, he
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
also believes it has created a challenge that has to be met. “As Copenhagen expands and becomes a more global city, we see the downside to this expanding too, e.g. a rise in gang crime. This is a challenge to the liveability of this city, one of our trademarks. It might turn into a threat to our brand”, Jørgensen says.
The mindblowing wonder of bicycles Before becoming the director of the (then) newly launched Wonderful Copenhagen in 1994, Lars Bernhard Jørgensen worked in the administration at Christiansborg. Since 1994 the number of tourists in Copenhagen has doubled, very much owing to the mar-
keting tactics of Wonderful Copenhagen. The number of tourists may have doubled, but in cities like Barcelona the numbers have quadrupled. This does not deter Lars Bernhard Jørgensen: “Copenhagen has no cathedrals, no Eiffel Tower, but the city has the Copenhageners and their way of life. This is a huge part of our image. We own Copenhagenism. Copenhagen is perceived as a very attractive city around the world. We have a good work/life balance and many green areas in our city”. Lars Bernhard Jørgensen names the many bicycles in Copenhagen as something tourists notice. “Many visitors find the numerous bicycles to be mindboggling, exotic and fantastic.
“Copenhagen has no cathedrals, no Eiffel Tower, but the city has the Copenhageners and their way of: Copenhagenism.

38 An interview with Mr. Copenhagenism
Danes just ride their bicycle as part of their everyday lives, but visitors are really blown away by this, and it is considered to be a mark of first class living standards. This is the very thing we need to transform into financial growth.”
“Copenhagen is seen as an open and tolerant city with few barriers. We are perceived as informal, and this tolerant image does not really tally with our visa restrictions.”
Stop littering, stay openminded Lars Bernhard Jørgensen says he wishes for more quirky hotels and vegetarian restaurants in Copenhagen. And to stop the littering. “I welcome the city of Copenhagen's “Ren By” (Clean City )campaign with open arms, but we have a long way to go. Lots of people just throw their cigarette stubs everywhere or dump their pizza box in the street. It gives the impression that Copenhageners do not give a hoot about their own city, and it causes great damage to our image. Liveability is built on mutual respect and collaboration, the realization that Copenhagen is home to us all. Littering does not belong in that picture. You do not stub out your cigarette on your living room floor, do you?” But there are more challenges ahead besides cigarette stubs and bad manners. Politicians in Copenhagen also need to help make Copenhagen a great city, for inhabitants as well as visitors. “Copenhagen is seen as an open and tolerant city with few barriers. We are perceived as informal, and this tolerant image does not really tally with our visa restrictions. So, just like that, we do not seem open-minded at all. Copenhagen must be an openminded city, we can not afford to shut our gates. The world must be felt in Copenhagen, and Copenhagen must be felt in the world.”

Restaurant Kanalen
Looking like Copenhagen's own Venice, Christianshavn is home to top designers, stylish architects and scruffy hippies from Christiania. Christianshavn is perfect for a stroll, with beautiful houses and charming ships and boats of every kind lining the canals. Christianshavn is the home of world famous freetown Christiania and ditto restaurant NOMA. But hidden gems are glimmering everywhere.
Hidden away on a narrow canal quay near Wilders Plads, you find one of the most charming and romantic restaurants in Copenhagen. This tiny eatery is a favourite among business people in the area – and perfect for a date! The chairs are by Wegner, local artists exhibit on the walls and the menu is based on seasonal produce – and classic dishes. Try traditional Danish lunch dishes such as herring or fried beef tartare. Or go for dinner; local produce prepared á la France. The idyllic canals where2go APRIL 2010 international edition

Christianshavns Bådudlejning (Boat Hire) On a pontoon right next to Christianshavns Torv (Christianshavns Square) you find one of the most legendary spots in this area. This is not just a place for hiring a boat, this is also a cosy café with outdoor seating and a great chill-out spot for chilling-out connoisseurs. Elderly ladies sip coffee, young guys throw back some beers. This pontoon haven also offers some renowned fish cakes. If you are allergic to smoke (or smokers), stay away. Most Christianhavners like a little tobacco to compliment their beer. Few come here for the actual hiring of boats. But you can, no sailing skills required. But you can not hire a boat if you are drunk!
Whenever supermodel Helena Christensen visits her native Denmark, be prepared to bump into her on Christianshavn. Helena always likes to hang out on Christianshavn, and her mother has a great vintage shop in Skt. Annægade. The shop offers a variety of designer goodies at almost half price. A long time ago, Vesterbro was the largest working-class district in Copenhagen, with endless rows of run-down, chock-full tiny apartments. These buildings were crammed together, no sun reaching the dingy back alleys. Children living in this backyard slum spent their childhood years in “the paupers sun” – the dim light reflected from the windowpanes. Today, no one has to make due with “paupers sun” at Vesterbro. An extensive renovation in the mid nineties redeveloped and tranformed Vesterbro into the hippest neighbourhood in Copenhagen.
Dunkel
Dunkel means dim in English. Dim is also a perfect description of the décor in this club. Dunkel is for you if: You do not care if you are dancing with gay or straight people, closing hours make you frown, you keep doing your moves even if the music is quirky and unknown. Dunkel is renowned for letting the DJs spin it as they please. The drinks are very cheap, the music is very loud, the atmosphere a wee bit out of control. Akademihaven at Carlsberg Today Carlsberg is known for probably the best beer in the world. But way back then old man brewer Jacobsen also had a keen interest and appreciation of architecture. Perfect for romantic walks and stolen kisses under leafy trees. Compared to other parts of Copenhagen, Østerbro is definitely more quiet, less hectic and somewhat more discreet. Not saying Østerbro is dead and deserted by 6pm, but with a demographic mainly made up of young families and high income workers, they are not exactly dancing in the streets on Østerbro. But it is the part of Copenhagen that offers most recreational areas – such as the city’s largest public park, Fælledparken – and some of the finest restaurants and cafées, Copenhagen has to offer. MUD
Men Under Development – or Mud as it is commonly known – is the perfect place to go in Østerbro for men´s casual fashion. The shop carries brands such as NN07, Diesel and Tommy Hilfiger, and is run by people who clearly know what they are talking about. There is no loud dance music, no teenage assistants who do not know their arse from their elbow, so if you are looking for a new pair of jeans, the latest in sneakers or those desert boots you have been dreaming about for months, MUD is definitely the place to go. Kastellet Kastellet – or the Citadel – is one of Copenhagen´s biggest tourist attractions, mainly due to the world famous Little Mermaid statue located at Langelinie. Whether you are interested in old architecture (there is an absolutely beautiful old English church right next to the Mærsk headquarters) or just in the mood for a walk, Kastellet will let you experience Copenhagen from a completely new angle. Not only is it one of the world’s best preserved fortresses, it is also used by the locals as a recreational park for jogging, picnics and sports. Do not be alarmed if you see soldiers walking around. Some of the buildings are still used by the Danish defence. Kastellet Kastellet 1
Fru Heiberg When it comes to fine dining, Østerbro is often associated with the Michelin Star awarded restaurant, Paustian. Which, of course, comes highly recommended. But this part of Copenhagen also offers lesser known, yet still fantastic restaurants. My personal favourite is Fru Heiberg (Mrs Heiberg), which is like a small piece of Paris right in the centre of Østerbro. Not only does the kitchen excel when it comes to French cuisine – the service is also extremely friendly and very apt when it comes to recommending the right wine for your dinner. It is an intimate and small restaurant, so I strongly suggest you book in advance. Fru Heiberg Rosenvængets Allé 3 Sun-thu: 17-22, fri-sat: 17-23 fruheiberg.dk www.where2go.dk

Looking older than you are? Do you look older than your age or does your youthful looks make people think you are much younger? Whether babyfaced or not, the key to this mystery seems to lie in the activity of a certain enzyme in your skin.
S
cientists and the skin care industry have spent years and huge amounts of money in an attempt to solve the mystery of the ageing process of the skin. Today we all know that smoking, the sun and super oxide free radicals cause wrinkles, lines, loss of elasticity and other signs of ageing, but lots of questions remain unanswered. One of these is the importance of internal factors - what lies hidden under your very own skin. ďƒŠ

The war on ageing
skin. The enzyme is called arNOX and is located on the cell surface. This enzyme generates its own free radicals on the skin surface. ArNOX seems to be hibernating while we are still young, but accelerates as we get older. We all have our own unique level of arNOX. To find out just how arNOX causes our skin to age, scientists from Purdue University and Stanford School of Medicine studied a group of women aged 45 - 65. They were accessed based on appearance, and via results from an analysis apparatus especially made for revealing damage to the skin not visible to the human eye. This apparatus also reveals
aging. Blood samples were taken to determine the level of arNOX and finally all the results were compared.
Stop smoking
Scientists discovered that the subjects with the lowest findings of active arNOX looked seven years younger than their biological age, while subjects with a high level of arNOX looked seven years older than they were. So we are now a bit wiser when it comes to the aging of the skin. Luckily scientists have developed a method for reducing arNOX, and thereby strongly reduced the ageing process altogether. So with this in mind, and if you stay out of the sun and stop smoking, you are en route to a youthful look for many years to come.
Words Andrea Bak
Outer factors such as sun and nicotine are known to make your skin age. But internal courses need to be factored in as well. Through some groundbreaking research, scientists are getting a bit closer to solving this wrinkly mystery. Scientists at Purdue University, Indiana, USA, have found an enzyme very likely to be a key factor in the aging of the

E
arly one September morning in 2007, the police stormed a first floor apartment on Glasvej. The residents, two brothers, had been under surveillance by the PET (The Danish Security and Intelligence Service) for some time, and the brothers were believed to be plotting a terrorist attack. The police stormed ten other apartments around Copenhagen simultaniously, and made seven arrests. Two of the men arrested, Hammad Kürshid and Abdoulgani Tokhi, were accused of making the explosive TATP. They had been testing this explosive in the stairwell on Glasvej. They had even filmed these tests on mobile phones. They denied the TATP was made for terrorist use, but the amount of evidence against them were so extensive that they were held in custody. During the investigation the police tested the TATP by blowing up a city-bus, using a bomb equivalent in force to the ones the two suspects were accused of making. In June the suspects were sentenced to 12 and 8 years in prison. Abdoulgani Tohki will be expelled from Denmark when he has served his time. www.where2go.dk

The taxi driver and the Jaguar
Adelgade 63, st.tv., Kbh K
I
n the early hours of Holy Saturday, Easter 2005, two men stumbled upon something horribly macabre: two dismembered human legs and one human arm leaning against a dumpster. At first the two men thought the limbs were just parts of a mannequin doll. But they were not. 24 hours later the remaining parts of a dead body was found in a basement lightwell near Adelgade 106. The body was identified as that of 41-year old taxi driver Torben Vagn Knudsen, known as Taxi-Torben (Torben-the-taxi-driver). He had been stabbed repeatedly and had died from his wounds. The body had been dismembered into six parts. On the night of the killing Torben Knudsen had been seen at Andy´s Bar. He was seen leaving the bar at dawn with one American and one Asian-looking man. When the police stormed the apartment – it turned out to be the crime scene – they discovered that a Sudanese man, Numan Isaac Rahma, also known as The Jaguar, had been living there. He was a DJ and had been quarantined from several nightlife spots because of his extensive drug use. A few days after this brutal murder, a DJ from Philadelphia, Jared Heller, turned himself in to the police. He told them he had been forced to make cuts in the deceased, and that he had also been involved in hiding the body parts. The actual killing and dismembering had been done by the Jaguar alone. Jared Heller was sentenced to four months in prison for unseemly conduct towards a corpse, and was expelled from Denmark for five years. The Jaguar has never been found and is believed to be hiding out in Sudan. Each of the men has a wife and child in Copenhagen.

O
n a spring morning in 1989 a man crashed his car near Birkerød. He sustained potentially fatal injuries and his face was so badly bruised it took some time to identify him. The man turned out to be one Carsten Nielsen. In the car the police found wigs, walkie-talkies, picklocks and numerous envelopes containing large amounts of money in foreign currencies. A bill made out for a computer company “PC-85” was found on the floor of the car. Company adress: Blekingegade 2, first floor. The police also found three keys. All three turned out to be keys to the door at Blekingegade 2. Behind this door the police found a somewhat twisted version of Aladdin´s Cave. Police and postal service uniforms were found in a secret room. The apartment was crammed with hand grenades, explosives, pumpguns and much more. The police soon realized they had found something they had been hunting for for months: they had caught the gang who had shot and killed a young police officer during a violent robbery against the post office at Købmagergade. The gang, instantly named Blekingegadebanden by the press, had been involved in crime since the early 70´s to raise money for the Palestinian organisation, PFLP. Two years after the police unlocked that apartment door, the members of this group, or gang, received their sentences. Three members were sent to prison for ten years, others were sentenced to eight, seven, three and one year. The killer of the police officer remains unnamed. A cold case of double murder
Peter Bangsvej 74, 3.th., Frederiksberg
O
ne of the most intriguing mysteries in Denmark´s history of crime took place on February 20th, 1948, in the otherwise peaceful and respectable Frederiksberg. On this day, in the early morning hours, the maid Asta Hansen found both her domestic employers, Vilhelm and Inger Margrethe Jacobsen, dead. They had been beaten to death, with heavy blows to their faces, and had been laid
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
out in a very peculiar manner. Pillows had been pushed under their dead bodies, and they were covered up by towels and duvets. The murderer (or murderers) had taken plenty of time to clean up the place, and had even left some odd leads, only to obstruct the investigation. Walking sticks had been placed at the side of each body, Vilhelm Jacobsens wrists had been slit and Mrs. Jacobsens combs, earrings and fake teeth had been put on display on one of the radiators in the living room. The police found no fingerprints at the scene and the murder remains unsolved. Many guesses have
been made. One theory linked the Jacobsens´ to a black-marketeer called Iglen (The Leach), another suggested the couple might have been Soviet spies killed by the KGB. Perhaps Mrs. Jacobsen had scorned a secret lover, or perhaps the Danish Resistance Movement had finally caught up with Mr. Jacobsen – he had been accused of collaborating with the Nazis during the war. And finally, just perhaps, Vilhelm Jacobsen knew things about high-ranking police officers and had been killed off.

Girlie treats at Royal Café
Words Karne Lykkebo and Søren McGuire Photos Carsten Seidel
Most traditional lunch in Denmark? A local speciality: Smørrebrød! A slice of rye bread. Pile on cold meats, egg, bacon, salmon, salad, shrimp, cress, mayo, parsley…well, not all at once. WHERE2GO helps you eat your way into the very heart of Danish culture.
Y
ou might not enjoy eating a solid meal in a pub with dim lighting. You might like fine china, welcoming rooms lit by daylight and a sprinkle of exquisite design. Then the Royal Café is for you. The canapé-sized smørrebrød at Royal Café are called smushies. This is a feminine, waist-friendly version. If you are not counting calories, the petiteness of these treats means you can explore a wider variety of meats and trimmings. It is possible to compose a full meal too: start off with a platter of herring specialities, then fill any gaps left in your stomach with smushies. Order one, two, three pieces at a time – every order is served with elegance on beautiful Royal Copenhagen china. The smushies might leave you room for desserts. Luckily, the counter at Royal Café is brimming with homebaked pies, voluminous layer cakes and other guilty pleasures of the sugary kind. The Coffee, hot and strong, is served in eggshell china cups, a perfect grande finale for a ladies´ lunch. At every table women in all shapes and sizes are relishing the food, chatting and perhaps taking a load off during a shopping trip. Visiting the Royal Café feels a bit like being in a lavish doll house, this is oestrogen territory, so do not expect to meet your future husband here. But you will have a lovely time in the company of some of the best bread, coffee and cakes in Copenhagen. Royal Café

Classics at Kanal Caféen
K
anal Caféen is within a stone´s throw from Christiansborg (home of the Danish Parliament). In this cave-like restaurant Danes have been enjoying a glass of beer and a few pieces of smørrebrød for 150 years. Inside, it looks like nothing much has changed over time. The overall impression is darkbrown, medium brown and lightbrown. Seascapes on every wall. The waiters just might be the original ones too: black-vested, beer-gutted men´s men with tongue-in-cheek remarks for everyone. At Kanal Caféen you are in a bustling hot pot of journalists, renowned politicians and civil servants, all reminding you that politics are going down close by. Add the occasional Swedish tourist and yourself to the picture. The menu is traditional. Herrings: pickled, marinated, au naturel, some cold meats and a modest selection of cheese. You simply tick off what you want on the menu, and seconds later your order is before you. Served on giant platters, the food is decent, but no venture into gastronomy. But then the food is not really why you are here. You are here to soak up the buzz that is going on – and has gone on for 150 years – in these very rooms. So look around you, listen, absorb. You will not find this kind of living history anywhere else in Copenhagen. Kanal Caféen

You can relish this delicious food right on the spot in the bright and welcoming shop at companiable longtables, take it home or relocate to the adjoining Aamanns restaurant area. Whichever you choose, the service is quick and competent. Ask away about produce used or how the food is prepared – you are sure to get informed answers. International and Danish media alike has given Aamanns rave reviews. Sometimes this causes restaurants to slack off and double their prices. However, Aamanns has maintained their high standards, and their superb smørrebrød can still be enjoyed at a reasonable 50 Dkr á piece. The menu at Aamanns changes with the season. SMØRREBRØD
A house, a tree and a truly traditional meal
A
t the corner of Gammeltorv and Vestergade you find Huset Med Det Grønne Træ (The House with the Green Tree). A large, open-spaced room with high ceilings welcomes you. The décor seems unaltered since opening in 1900. But the premises are neatly kept and inviting. While waiting for your order – it is not a long wait – have a look at the numerous old photographs and drawings from a Copenhagen long gone. The food here is not part of the latest culinary revolution, but it represents craftmanship in its finest form. Huset Med Det Grønne Hus is also famed for its moist ground beef, reputedly one of the best to be found in Copenhagen. We also recommend the plaice, gently bronced in butter, with homemade tartare sauce on the side. Do not forget to check out the impressive cheese & dessert menus. Equally impressive is the list of different schnaps available. Huset Med Det Grønne Træ also offers excellent beer from local gourmet breweries Fur and Nørrebros Bryghus. Huset Med Det Grønne Træ is a favourite among connoisseurs and traditionalists. The restaurant is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle, there is a hushed feel of time warp here. The food is the kind that leaves your mother green with envy. Huset Med Det Grønne Træ Gammeltorv 20 33 12 87 86 Price level: Medium

If you are up for another tasty drill, here comes the main course and dessert marching up. Flanked by a seductive selection of cheese. The wine selection is carefully chosen to match each course. You can find something suave on (Acquamarina affiliated restaurant) Era Ora´s impressive wine menu. Or ask for guidance for something a bit more humble. Whichever you choose, you are served by attentive and knowledgeable waiters. Acquamarina modestly claims to be a trattoria. But the cuisine as well

The fishing harbour – here today, not so sure about tomorrow
Getting to the fishing harbour is a bit tricky. You have to go past the Nordhavn S -train station, corporate buildings and seemingly endless rows of containers. Not much fishing is going on here, no cuisine to be found other than ice cream cones. So why did we lure you here? To experience a certain vibe. In this Klondyke corner of Copenhagen, people are living in outdated, planked huts. Krølle, an old man with a long, white beard is selling smoked ale from a chipped, wooden boat. A moped purrs by. The fishing harbour is a hazy bubble in a glitzier, busier Copenhagen. If you want to experience this almost extinct part of Copenhagen, hurry. It will all too soon be gulped up by more office buildings.
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
Fiskerestaurant was established in 1910 and has been going strong ever since. Back then the square in front – Gammel Torv – was abuzz with fishmongers, mostly amply chested women wearing white aprons shouting and filetting, market style. Yes, they might have been tattooed. Today, Gammel Torv is a quiet little nook in the heart of the city, and Krogs Fiskerestaurant the only survivor. At Krogs Fiskerestaurant you are facing a culinary fork-in-the-road: The Menu or Á la Carte? The menu offers ten excellent courses, each with a more modern take on fish and seafood. But since you´ve endured the waiters long enough to get a table, why not go all the way, go á la carte. This is
the real, classic Krogs Fiskerestaurant extravaganza: Caviar, oysters, lobster and truffle accompanied by legendary dish Sole Madame Walewska. The guests at Krogs reflect the nauseating price level. Well-to-do tourists, businessmen out to impress. It is all part of the Krogs experience. Krogs Fiskerestaurant is a unique chance to revisit history, a visit we highly recommend. Fish afficianado? Krogs surprise menu. It is – well, a surprise! But it is fish and it is fabulous. Fish virgin? Fried salmon. And a quite tempting dessert menu.

His former restaurant MR at Kultorvet was awarded a Michelin Star – only to be closed when the main investor withdrew from the project. A few months later MR reopened – now specializing in fish. The decor is exclusive, romantic, inviting. And Mads Refslund is back in full force. The food is elegant, innovative, phenomenal - inspired by Heston Blumenthal and other molecular gastronomists. Choose between a four or seven course meal. Even the seven course dinner will not leave you feeling bloated or heavy – the food is perky, sprightly and light-footed. If you opt for just the four course option, beware: you are missing out on an extra couple of excellent samples of wine from the ambitious wine cellar, and even worse: you are missing out on dessert - a famed Mads Refslund speciality. The world’s oldest and funniest amusement park
BAKKEN About 10 kilometers to the north of Copenhagen, in the south-east corner of Dyrehaven, you find the world´s oldest – 400 years! - amusement park: Dyrehavsbakken. Or just Bakken, as it is called by most Danes. Dyrehavsbakken is a colourful and fun-filled gem situated in the middle of the beautiful Dyrehaven; formerly the hunting grounds of Danish kings.
D
yrehaven is the most stunning of all the woods surrounding Copenhagen; 1600 hectares of wood, shrubberies and plains – Bakken is the only amusement park in the world to be so happily situated. Deer, stags and sikas stroll about, easily seen from the paths cutting through the area. This unique piece of Danish nature; woods, plains, lakes, rolling hills, the Kings hunting castle (Eremitagen) – draws 7,5 million visitors each year. The season at Bakken runs from late March to late August. 2, 7 million guests every season rings in Bakken at number 2 among most visited attractions in Denmark. Bakken is also on the European Top 10 of most visited amusement parks in Europe.
where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
This is quite remarkable – Bakken has a tough competitor close by, Tivoli in Copenhagen counting 3 million visitors in its summer season. These two amusement parks, located within 10 kilometers of each other, has an impressive joint attendance figure of 6 million guests in a season of roughly 150 days. Bakken has a policy of free entrance that might seem a bit odd today. But Bakken holds on to this 400 year old tradition. It has always been free to visit Bakken and so it shall continue to be, seems to be the overall attitude here: “It contributes to the unique Bakken atmosphere that all are welcome”. The old roller coaster at Bakken is still up and running, today it is one of 34 rides, making Bakken the amusement
park in Scandinavia with most rides. Though the wooden rollercoaster is 80 years old, it easily holds its own in competing with the more modern and hair-raising thrill-rides turning people – literally! – upside down. Apart from exploring the rides, visitors can try their hand at some of the many game stalls, or why not exhibit your talents : throw some balls or darts, shoot that air rifle or slingshot. Great prizes lined up on wooden shelves, yours for the picking. Or try your luck in one of the many amusement arcades at Bakken. The numerous slot-machines in the arcades makes Bakken the largest casino in Denmark. Do as the Danes have done for hundreds of years: Go to Bakken!

Home of Hamlet Get inspired by Shakespeare, Picasso, Blixen – or by a famous gas station! Get on board Kystbanen for a scenic train ride along the coast.
Kystbanen, a Danish main traffic artery, runs along the coast of the blue Øresund from Copenhagen to Helsingør (Elsinore). In just 45 minutes you arrive in Helsingør, but we highly recommend a few stops along the way: You will find sublime, world-class modern art and architecture and even some tasty food. Join WHERE2GO on the right track to Elsinore, home of Hamlet.
F Arne Jacobsen gas station
irst stop: Klampenborg Station – especially if you are an architecture buff. At Kystvejen 24 you find what is probably the only listed gas station in the world, drawn by Danish architect Arne Jacobsen famed for designing the chair Ægget (the Egg). The gas station is a functionalist white tiled mushroom roofed by a large ellipse. No alterations has been made since 1936 – this has to be
one the most stylish places to fill up your tank. Next stop: Rungsted Kyst, the Beverly Hills of Copenhagen. Huge villas, rich kids and sportscars in the summer. Visit the small harbour in Rungsted with its Mediterranean ambience and tiny wooden houses lining the pier. If you get hungry, we recommend cosy café and restaurant Lastrummet on www.where2go.dk

Here you get to relish not only the view, but also a cold drink and the homemade burgers, Italian treats or the popular barbecue buffet. The menu is in Danish only, but all waiters speak English. If you are into live music, jazz and cover bands entertain throughout the season.
Rungsted Harbour
Rungstedlund
At the pier´s outer end you find another gem, Club Royal, home to the Royal Danish Yacht Club. The café & restaurant here has a distinct feel of “ay ay skipper!” and with front row seats for the Oresound, Club Royal is perfect for chilling out by the sea. Cafe Royal is also a great place to do some celebrity spotting: Danish Crown Prince Frederik – a keen sailor – sometimes comes here. Directly across from the harbour you find Rungstedlund, museum and last resting place of world famous Danish author Karen Blixen (also known as Isak Dinesen). She became even more famous when her novel Out of where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
Africa was turned into a movie – starring Meryl Street and Robert Redford. Rungstedlund was her home in life and here she has remained. Today Rungstedlund has been turned into a museum, but it still looks and feels like a real home. Karen Blixen rests peacefully underneath a beautiful tree, crowned by a large and leafy treetop, in the gardens of Rungstedlund. A must-visit for Blixen fans and literature fans in general.
Warhol in the woods Next: Humlebæk Station. This is where you find internationally renowned Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Louisiana is a haven for fans of architecture and modern art alike.
Modern buildings and a huge old villa covered in ivy melt into the steep hills and lush lawns surrounding Louisiana. The grand view of the Oresound will take your breath away. Exhibits change throughout the year, but Louisiana has a collection comprising over 3000 items by the likes of Warhol, Picasso, Giacometti, Kirkeby – to name a few. This splendid museum is constantly changing, it seems to be a living organism of its own. Be prepared for surprises or check out Louisiana´s website (in English). The sculptures, beautifully scattered about in the Sculpture Park, are on permanent show and so are the paintings in the new Asger Jorn Room: In this room you find the expressive and abstract works by Danish painter (and COBRA co-founder) Asger Jorn.

make a leap for the far end of the room. Here you find a large sheet of glass in the floor. Behind the glass is part of the original city wall surrounding ancient Helsingør, and rumour has it that this is also a secret passage leading all the way to Kronborg. Walking along Strandgade you find yourself in the beautiful center of Helsingør. Skyttegade and Anna Queen Stræde are lined by charming half-timbered houses, and the cobbled streets create a scenic and romantic atmosphere. A Danish movie about the composer Carl Nielsen was shot here, it seems appropriate; these are streets of sweet harmony. On Stengade – the main street – you find cosy eatery Madam Sprunck, established in circa 1775, a place we recommend for lunch and / or a really nice dinner. Enter through the gateway, look for the sign and watch out for that steep step at the entrance!
Madam Sprunck offers traditional specialities: various fish dishes and open sandwiches (smørrebrød), alongside fois gras and tenderloin. We are told by a waiter that most tourists boldly tries out the traditional Danish dishes and as Madam Sprunck has a menu in English, you have just run out of excuses: take a culinary plunge into a world of herrings and liver pâté. After feasting on Danish specialities you might be up for some more exploring. Take a walk about town, have a look at the fascinating Karmeliter cloister and Helsingør cathedral Sct. Olai - boasting a 68 meter church tower reaching into the sky. Hundreds of years ago Kronborg was the protector of Helsingør. Today, locals find the protection they need by installing firewalls on their computer. But they still believe in the myth of Holger Danske. Just a bit, of course.

Beer, byttemærker and a day out with the dead June Basar is from India. She has lived in Copenhagen for six months. That makes her an expert on Copenhagernes. So read this. It might just save your life. To be a true Copenhagener, you must 1) Wear waterproof mascara 2) Do the Hygge. The mascara is for the unpredictable now rainy, now sunny, now windy, weather. Hygge, on the other hand, is the cosiness that you must create to live your life here, especially when the days are grey and cold. The ingredients needed for hygge are candles. They are not just candles; it’s a burning flame of the cosy and the shining light of Danish life philosophy. The city Rather provincial is what Copenhagen feels like when you have formerly lived in the bustling mega city of Mumbai. Old buildings, shops closing at 6 pm, empty streets at midnight, quiet Sundays - these qualities make the city both charming and exasperating. It is a modern city with 150 year old buildings, a modern city with a gaping lack of elevators; good for the hamstrings and the environment - two things you don’t care about when you are pregnant and hauling groceries to your fourth floor apartment. If you plan to do the hygge with a Danish partner, without protection, I suggest you find an apartment at a lower level. where2go APRIL 2010 international edition

For Copenhageners, the party is where the beer is, and it is usually at their homes, parks, concerts, beaches, the canals, even graveyards. Where the living Copenhageners love to picnic and play ball just above the dead. The history of Copenhagen is best learned at vinstues / bodegas where veteran Copenhageners keep alive the glorious Danish tradition of getting drunk. Behind the tightly drawn curtains of these bodegas, people who have been drinking all their lives will tell you about Copenhagen as they knew it when they were sober. Often you also find younger people looking for one more drink when the hip cafes and bars have closed. Unless you are the kind of person who pays to enter

could break the ice by making jokes about people from Jutland, their countryside cousins, but with caution. The joke, it turns out, is on the Copenhageners since most of them are actually from Jutland. These former Jutlanders love Freedom of speech- When invited to a party please carry a bunch of flowers and a little speech. No occasion is complete without a speech. Byttemærke-They love getting presents, they love returning presents even more. Be careful and make sure your present has a byttemærke / exchange sticker on it. Arne Jacobsen- Well, who doesn´t, but when he designed his dining chair so loved by Copenhageners, he forgot to take into account that Danes dine for hours. Those chairs are hard! Carry a butt cushion; be prepared to eat for four hours. Flags on the buses, on the buildings, on the tables, on the birthday cakes. Nothing nationalistic about this one. When in doubt, carry the Danneborg to show that you come in peace. Beer- At first, it was strange to see guests arriving with crates of beers when invited to dinner. Later I was glad, because the measly six-pack of beer I bought for two guests ran out in two minutes.
the now closed Museum Erotica or Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, most of the good things in Copenhagen come for free. Make the most of the national museums, galleries, castles, gardens which do not charge an entrance fee. More life, less things – that is the philosophy you should live by to be a real Copenhagener. It’s not very difficult to do that when almost 50% of your salary disappears in tax. Think riding bikes in sub zero temperatures and fashionably minimalistic apartments. Some apartments are so minimalistic they don’t have inbuilt showers. The pain of having a common shower by the fire escape is cushioned by 100.000 kroner worth of furniture in the living room. Minimalistic Danish furniture comes at maximum cost. How to make friends with people who have expensive furniture but no showers: Copenhageners are friendly though a bit reserved. You where2go APRIL 2010 international edition
How to communicate with a Copenhagener CAUTION! Miscommunication can kill. Make sure you learn the word “hej” - say it once for hello and twice for goodbye. Be cautious when using your scant Danish with Copenhageners. They have exacting standards for correct Danish accent and pronunciation. You do not want to be the bleeding haemophiliac (prone to excessive blood loss) Norwegian, who died at a Copenhagen hospital. The staff sent him home; they thought he said he was a homosexual. One missed syllable can kill you, so it is a relief that most Copenhageners speak English. You may however say Rødgrød Med Fløde. Copenhageners’ love it. Making foreigners say Rødgrød Med Fløde is a national sport. Beer, the preferred drink of former Jutlanders living in Copenhagen, best summarises this city and its people. It is not a city with people on the run. It is a fuss free place, best enjoyed at leisure and in good company. Enjoy your stay!

136 goodbye
A goodbye does not have to be an ending. It might as well be a hello to something new. Every month WHERE2GO invites a public figure to share the story of a goodbye that turned out to be a hello to something new. This week guitarist Billy Cross says goodbye to his worries and to his anger over politics.
Goodbye: Billy Cross
Words Andrea Bak
G
uitarist Billy Cross grew up in New York, but has been living in Denmark since the late 70´s. He has worked with Bob Dylan and has produced an array of Danish records. Normally, Billy Cross is a mellow minded dude. But a while back he felt himself becoming bitter and increasingly frustrated, as his anger over the politics of the Danish government grew. He then made a choice: he said goodbye to his anger and parted with his concerns on whether or not Denmark is turning into a nation fuelled by hate. »New York is the only 100% integrated multiethnic society I know. New Yorkers just do not care what your race, your origins or your religion is, or about how you choose to dress. If you are civil and good at what you do, you are welcome. When I came to Denmark I encountered what I call anthropological racism,« Cross says. Billy Cross has no sympathy for the current conservative government in Denmark, as it has made its strict immigration laws a key issue. A political agenda that has not gone unnoticed abroad. »I witnessed a very good friend of mine becoming more and more frustrated and indignant with the immigration politics of this government and the increasing privatization of the health sector, and I felt just the same. Then I realized I could not do anything. This anger would simply eat me up alive, so I decided to stop worrying. I still care. I just decided to put all of my energy into playing my music, into making people happier, to contribute with something positive in a world that has given me so much. I can not do that by sitting in a corner, venting anger«, Cross says. see you again MAY 6th where2go APRIL 2010 international edition

WelCoMe In this issue of Louis Nielsen Magazine, we take a look at some of this year’s new glasses at Louis Nielsen, including sunglasses and the new Nordic collection that tailors to Danes’ advanced taste. We have an honest sit down with Pernille Aalund, who is preparing for a life with glasses. And we pose a simple question to the 21% of Danes who have lost a pair of glasses: what happened to them?

deNMArk’S MoSt SuCCeSSful oPtICIAN ChAIN The Louis Nielsen optician chain was founded on a groundbreaking approach that set new standards in the industry. In 1978, optician Louis Nielsen founded the company, which was the first to sell contact lenses on a subscription basis. Furthermore in 1994 the city of Aalborg issued a tender for glasses, and the Danish Association of Opticians attempted to gather the city’s opticians under a common bid, but Louis Nielsen refused. He submitted his own bid and won the tender. Customers flocked to his stores and a modern business success story took flight. Louis Nielsen A/S now has 63 shops in Denmark and plans to increase this total to 86 shops within the next two years. Louis Nielsen sells approx 250,000 pairs of glasses and 25 million contact lenses annually. Since 2005, the Louis Nielsen optician chain has been a part of the world’s largest privately owned optician chain, Specsavers.

WhAt dANeS look for wheN BUyINg gLaSSeS We aren’t like all the rest. At least not when it comes to choosing glasses. Danes often choose sophisticated glasses with a simple design, which is the exact focus of Louis Nielsen’s new Nordic collection. In Norway, they prefer well known brands. In Finland, they have rather conservative taste. The Dutch are totally out there. And everyday Brits are light years behind the latest glasses trends. There are major differences in glasses preferences in the different European countries. Denmark is at the forefront with Swedes when it comes to keeping up with the latest glasses trends, says Stig Engelbreth Hansen, Nordic Product Manager at Louis Nielsen. Whereas most European countries are devoted to brand name glasses with large logos on the side bars, Danes are moving in the opposite direction: “Danes are looking to the design, especially the form on the front of the frame. We conducted a study that shows that 97% of Danes buy glasses
based on the design and what looks good on their face. They are less interested in the brand name,” explains Stig Engelbreth Hansen. Daring Danes Denmark’s status as a pioneering country in terms of glasses fashion is due to its many talented designers, says Stig Engelbreth Hansen: “We in the Nordic countries are extremely good at selling quality and we have had extremely talented designers in Denmark over the years who have locked in on the latest trends.” In recent years, Danish designers have created a wide range of large retro glasses that hearken back to 70s and 80s. And these glasses are a complete mystery to the English: “People in England think that we are completely ridiculous. Our glasses
trends are a bit too daring for them,” says Stig Engelbreth Hansen. Sophisticated taste This distinctive taste in glasses poses challenges to people like Stig Engelbreth Hansen when developing new glasses for the Danish market. “In other countries, you can just examine which models are selling well and then make some different versions of them in a couple of new colours. In Denmark, we have to team up with designers who are in touch with the very latest developments,” he explains. And that is exactly what Stig Engelbreth Hansen has done in his work with Louis Nielsen’s new Nordic collection, where the designers have tailored to Danes’ desire for simpler glasses with more sophisticated design.

“We are focusing more on the front of the frames and their actual form, while toning down the details on the side bars. This new collection features a more toned down look that caters to Danes’ sophisticated taste in glasses,” he says.

I’ll tAke the GlASSeS Over the whIte caNe Pernille Aalund can no longer read the morning newspaper. But the solution to her problem is simple, even though it has taken her years to accept it: Pernille needs glasses. You probably know Pernille as the QTV host. And you may also know her as an author, business owner and guest speaker – but one thing is certain: You don’t know her as a woman who wears glasses. Until now: “My vision has deteriorated gradually over the past seven or eight years. And it became a full-blown catastrophe when I couldn’t read my paper any more,” says 48-year-old Pernille Aalund to Magasyn. One visit to an optician revealed the indisputable truth: Her vision was no longer perfect. Her eyes were having difficulty focusing and the problem was only going to get worse with age. “I was ready to die at the optician’s. It’s a matter of age, after all. And I said to myself: There is no way I’m that old.” Pernille Aalund bought a pair of reading glasses, but she has not yet gone over to life as a full-time glasses wearer. “Both of my parents have glasses, but I just can’t bring myself to use them full time – yet. I am so vain that I only take my glasses out when I have to read something. And that is pretty absurd: I bought magnifying glasses

to have around the house. There’s one in the bathroom for reading all the small bottles, and one in the kitchen so that I don’t put cinnamon in my curry.” She is well aware of the comical nature of her situation: “It’s highly entertaining when we hold editorial staff meetings at Aller. I have extreme difficulty reading the small text if we’re reviewing something. So then it’s ‘Out with the glasses, Pernille’ and everybody laughs.” “I really need the glasses. I can’t see a thing. I can only see television at home, because we have a huge flat screen. And I know that getting used to them is only a question of time. I’ll take the glasses over the white cane,” laughs Pernille Aalund. Her daughter leads the way Even though Pernille does not use glasses full time yet, she has spent plenty of time browsing at the optician’s: “My nine-year-old daughter has worn glasses since she was quite young. And I’ve made a sport of ensuring that she has had a ton of really cool glasses. Right now she has huge glasses that are nearly as big as
her face, but she has had rectangular glasses, round spectacles and gaudy Dame Edna glasses,” she explains. When Pernille Aalund speculates about a life with glasses, she can just look to her daughter: “Her glasses are a part I haven’t of her identity. If she is planning to accepted go out, she looks the fact through them that I need like others look glasses yet. through jewellery or scarves. And But I will that’s how I’m soon. And going to be when I start wearing it’s going glasses.” to be fanShe can clearly see the advantastic! tage of wearing – Pernille glasses: Aalund “Glasses are the quickest way to change your look. meetings at work? Am I Pernille who fires, hires, inspires, motivates, or am I Pernille who lounges on the sofa with two dogs and fat crime novel? All of those Pernilles need glasses. I will have different glasses for the morning and afternoon. I can start a work day with business glasses, but in the afternoon I can loosen up and let down my hair, which means it will be time for the Dame Edna or femme fatale glasses.” It sounds like she is going to need a lot of glasses in her wardrobe and Pernille is already making room in her budget for a massive glasses buying spree: “Right now I am spending my money on shoes and bags, but I can certainly see myself transferring my love for expensive accessories to glasses. Just like some people have walk-in closets, I would be the type to have a glasses closet.” Pernille Aalund is not yet sure when we will see her with glasses on “QTV”. “I haven’t accepted the fact that I need glasses yet. But I will soon. And it’s going to be fantastic!”

the doG ate my gLaSSeS 21 percent of Danes have lost a pair of glasses. We asked them what happened to their glasses and heard amazing stories of starving dogs, evil bees and very festive evenings on the town. We are completely lost without them, but more than one out of five Danes have lost a pair of glasses, due to sometimes amazing circumstances. We asked the question “What happened to your glasses?” and the result was clear: The world is full of danger for those with glasses. Here are some of the most imposing threats: Critters and brats “My dog ate them,” claim a number of Danes. Small human creatures are also a threat to all glasses-wearing people. “My daughter knocked my glasses into the harbour,” recounts one person, while another lost her glasses “in a kindergarten class where I set them down on a table momentarily”.

Lost in the water Denmark is surrounded by 7,300 kilometres of coastline, so it comes as no surprise that water poses another serious threat to bespectacled Danes. “I went swimming with glasses and lost them.” says one Dane, while others have been subjected to more jarring events. The explanations range from “fell off my boat” to “lost them in the water when doing an Eskimo roll in a kayak” and the risky “lost them while fishing when a friend’s fishing pole swiped them off my face”. Forgetful glass eyes And finally, the biggest threat against these bespectacled Danes is probably themselves. The most common reason for losing one’s glasses is simple forgetfulness. We forget our glasses in the bus, on the train, in cafes, on
top of our cars and even, “in a motel in California”. Or, as one of the survey participants cryptically explains: “I have this mania about taking off my glasses when My I work. And then daughter suddenly it’s ‘Wife, have you knocked seen my glasmy glasses ses?’” We usually find them, but into the sometimes we bay. have to give up. Of course, it’s a shame to do without one’s glasses, but sometimes they disappear in festive circumstances: “I was out on the town. A lot of people wanted to try out my glasses. Had such a great evening that I forgot to take them home with me.”

Summer is on the way and contacts make it much easier to find the right pair of sunglasses.
YoU oFTEN SEE BETTER with contact lenses than with glasses. This is principally because you see more clearly in the peripheries of your vision and because you avoid the minor distortions caused by the lenses in glasses. WITH CoNTACT LENSES you avoid reflections on the lenses and having to look through a frame. YoU CAN ALSo see underwater with contact lenses, if you wear goggles. If you open your eyes underwater without goggles, you risk having the contacts slip off your eyes. You also risk the contacts absorbing chemicals and pollution from the water, which can cause eye infections. So remember to wear goggles! YoU CAN CHANGE oR ENHANCE your eye colour with a pair of coloured contact lenses. 21 PERCENT of Danes lose their glasses. In most cases, they simply forget where they put them. You avoid this problem with contacts. SHoULD IT START To RAIN you won’t have to wipe off your glasses all the time. CoNTACT LENSES ARE a handy extra for those who love to wear glasses. You don’t have to make a complete change from glasses to contacts – you can simply wear contacts on the days you go to the beach or play sports, for example.

the NAtIoN’S beSt SpectacLeS wearer Mads Sæbbi won the 2009 Spectacles Wearer of the Year award and he has modelled for Louis Nielsen. You can be the winner of this year’s award. Registration begins this spring. It started with an everyday pleasant evening and dinner with his girlfriend, but ended on the catwalk in Copenhagen and London. For 23-year-old carpenter Mads Sæbbi from Randers, it was the beginning of fantastic experiences and a burgeoning model career. The couple were heading out to eat dinner when they were stopped on the street by representatives of the Louis Nielsen optician chain, who were scouting for prospects for the Spectacles Wearer of the Year model contest. Mads Sæbbi entered the contest. It wasn’t so much because he dreamt of a career on the catwalk, but because his brother-in-law’s dog had just chewed his glasses to pieces and he thought that he might get lucky and win a new pair of glasses.
Mads Sæbbi won Spectacles Wearer of the Year ´09.
From carpenter to top model Mads ended up winning much more than just a new pair of glasses. He made it directly to the finals at ILLUM department store in Copenhagen, together with five beautiful girls. But when the host of the final, Danish singer Szhirley, announced the winner, Mads was the last person standing from the more than 1,000 Danes from 16-30 years old who entered the
contest. Mads won a modelling job for Louis Nielsen, a model portfolio and a gift voucher. He also won the right to represent Denmark at the international Spectacles Wearer finals in London, which proved to be a life-changing experience. In May, Louis Nielsen calls for entries for the 2010 Spectacles Wearer of the Year. You may be the lucky winner of wonderful prizes and a modelling career! You may be called up to the catwalk for this year’s final show, which will be held in August during fashion week in Copenhagen.

CLASSIC PoLARoID The ultimate sunglasses classic. We can safely say that about the American company Polaroid, which presented its first model in 1940. The foundation was laid by Dr. Edwin Land, who invented a synthetic polarising material for sunglasses lenses. Simply put, his invention means that today you don’t have unpleasant reflections in your field of vision when you use Polaroid sunglasses.

1 roGer Moore In 1973, Roger Moore played James Bond for the first time in “Live and Let Die”. He was featured in six more films as the charming agent, thereby cementing his status as a star actor. Roger Moore is a true British gentleman whose elegant look and good taste never go out of style.
2 CASPer ChrISteNSeN “Don’t forget your toothbrush” made Casper Christensen a household name in Denmark, which introduced all Danes to the so-called “media glasses” with a thick, rectangular frame. The style is still found in optician’s shops, even though the modern version of media glasses have slightly rounder edges.

Horn-rimmed glasses were actually invented in the 1910’s, but became truly famous when a rock pioneer insisted on wearing thick hornrimmed glasses on his album covers and tour posters. Buddy Holly died tragically in an airplane crash in 1959. Today he is remembered both for his music and the classic horn-rimmed glasses.
Glasses trends change for most people, but not for the neurotic American director who has worn the exact same round, thick-framed glasses since the 1960s. This year, Woody’s glasses are quite trendy, even though he probably won’t notice.

5 thorVAld StAuNING “Stauning or Chaos” was the election slogan for the Social Democrats in 1935. And the election poster featured Stauning himself with his characteristic small round spectacles. In the modern version, the thinness has been taken out of the round spectacles. The look is less nerdy and more masculine.
