Danish furniture Design at israels sraels PlaDs Pla In inner-city Copenhagen, Israels Plads is the square where it’s all happening. This is where people meet up to eat, drink and pick up groceries in the city’s new mecca for foodies, Torvehallerne. And right opposite you’ll find one of the biggest producers of Danish furniture design - Fredericia. Fredericia’s new flagship store is a space dedicated to the Nordic aesthetic. A space where you can experience the most outstanding furniture design created by Danish, as well as international designers. Furniture from the grandmasters of the

1950s, such as Børge Mogensen, Nanna Ditzel and Wegner, alongside more contemporary trendsetting designers, including GamFratesi, Space, Shin Azumi and Cecilie Manz. With a history of furniture production spanning over a century, Fredericia’s new flagship store provides an amazing insight into the very best of Danish and international furniture design.

EDITOR'S LETTER

O

• WHAT WE THINK •

o get your brain

“Rome. I love the Romans’ take on life, their food, and of course their mad driving skills.”

STIRRED ...

ne of my favourite pastimes is reading the comments on Tripadvisor. Especially the really ranty ones. I am thoroughly amused by people complaining about noise from the pub downstairs when it says clearly on the hotel’s website that some noise must be expected, or by a series of photos showing dark shadows underneath the bathroom sink. (Apparently sleeping in a hotel room where there are dark shadows underneath the bathroom sink is a very horrible experience.) An especially enjoyable review came from a Danish lady who traveled to London with her husband and was apalled to find one king sized duvet in their hotel bed. She immediately requested – and was provided with – a second duvet so that they could sleep with each their own. Despite this friendly and helpful gesture and what seemed like an overall satisfaction with the hotel, she gave only one star. Because she felt like the hotel staff should have paid more attention to what was custom in the homeland of their guests. “When in Rome” clearly doesn’t apply to this one. I love to travel and one of the reasons for this is that so much is different from home. The food, the atmosphere, the people, the way the street lights works, how to take the bus, how to get a good price at the market, the sound the ambulances make – everything. I find it very inspiring – like being stirred in the brain. And I think that going away makes my love for my beautiful city even stronger. Especially when I don’t draw comparisons to how things are at home. Andrea Bak Editor

It is where we have always had our design studio. We always had a dream to open a little shop/gallery and recently we realised that we had the extra space to use as a storefront. So now is the time!

WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT SØNDER BOULEVARD?

When we first moved to Sønder Boulevard (late 2008) it wasn’t that special. The meat packing district was just beginning to house creative businesses and nightclubs, but we couldn’t afford it there. So we found an old base-

This bottle is for those who love tequila and also for those of us who think we don’t because of past disappointments with the stuff.

THE BOTTLE ”The focus on tequila is increasing internationally. It’s one of the only spirits that’s actually affected by its terroir – just like wine”, Daniel says. Of course, Studiestraede features several tequila-based drinks on their constantly evolving, seasonal menu. Try, for example, Count N’s Dirty Little Daughter, Mango T 95 or the highly delicious, ”onemore-please”, Tequila Thyme. t’s hard to choose, simply because Studiestraede Bar & Spirits have so much to choose from. The two owners, Daniel Nunez Bascunan and Gromit Eduardsen, are pulling down different spirits from the shelves. Studiestraede Bar & Spirits works both as a bar as well as a boutique where you can buy liquers, spirits and bar equipment. A one-stop-shop where you can obtain – amongst many other things – ice, lime, herbs, sugar, booze or mixers to take home so you can serve up drinks, either to your guests or even yourself after a hard day. Gromit and Daniel finally make their brave choice: a tequila from the producer Viviana. ‘Brave’, because tequila definitely isn’t on a Dane’s top-ten list of favourite beverages. ”First of all, forget all about the tequila-thing with the red hat you’ve tried that ended up with a massive hangover,” Gromit says, and judging by the look on his face, ‘tried’ means ‘had 15 shots in a row’. ”Tequila needs a revival”, he continues. ”It’s still quite easy to get your hands on a good tequila at a reasonable price. Real tequila is, by the way, based only on the agave-plant.” WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 2 9

MONSTER CULT MOVIE

1

A HITCHCOCK THRILLER The award-winning director, Alfred Hitchcock, cut loose in Copenhagen. In his political thriller Torn Curtain (1966), Paul Newman plays a scientist on his way to a conference in the communist East Berlin. He arrives in Copenhagen on board a cruise ship and during the movie, he passes both Nyhavn, Tivoli and Kongens Nytorv. Apparently Hitchcock liked what he saw; three years later he returned to make another thriller in Copenhagen, the movie, Topaz. FILM TORN CURTAIN (1966) INSTRUCTOR ALFRED HITCHCOCK

In the monster movie Reptilicus (1961), a giant lizard invades central Copenhagen in true Godzilla-style. Reptilicus, among other things, destroys the twisted spire of Børsen (the building at Christiansborg, used, up until 1800, as a commodity market) before it ends its days at the Town Hall Square. Today, the movie is a true, almost comic cult classic because of director, Paul Bang’s, diligent use of special effects which, let’s be honest, is something else compared to today’s standards. FILM REPTILICUS (1961) INSTRUCTOR POUL BANG

3

MIDT OM NATTEN (IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT) This movie – which is just as famous for its soundtrack made by bigmouthed, national troubadour, Kim Larsen, as it is for its political history – the audience is taken to the South Harbour (Sydhavnen) in Copenhagen, where a group of homeless people have created the freetown: Haveje. 'Midt om Natten' paints a great picture of Copenhagen in the mid 1980s with its references to squatters, yuppies, police, urban renewal, and political tycoons.

Denmark loves The Olsen Gang. In total, no less than 14 movies have been produced to tell the tales of Egon Olsen, Benny and Kjeld, who, utilising very creative methods, rob banks and companies for millions, but somehow always end up with Egon being put behind bars in the Vridsløselille prison. Besides Fængselsvej in the town of Albertslund (which in 2004 changed name to Egon Olsens Vej), the movies feature a lot of places in Copenhagen, from Asta Nielsens Vej in Valby (where Kjeld lives with Yvonne and their son Børge) to Enghave Brygge in the South Harbour (Sydhavnen), Nytorv, the National Bank and the Police Headquarters. rtRebels’ office is located on Nørre Voldgade, in the middle of Copenhagen. This is typical for the creative community – being in the middle of everything. Where it all goes down. Where the hipsters become hipsters before any of us even knows the meaning of the word. “I have always had a huge network of creative people around me. The things that drive me the most in my work are inspiring people and having fun”, Hjort says. “I’m very ambitious about Copenhagen and the possibilities that the city presents. It was my

goal to create a community where all kinds of creative people can meet across branches and backgrounds, and I think we’ve succeeded.” Success is one of the first words that come to mind when talking to Carla Cammilla. All her life, she has done what her passion and curiosity drove her to do. When she was 18 years old, she decided to travel the world for two years and go where her mind and heart led her. She studied as an Osho Rebalancing therapist in India, which fuelled her spiritual side. “That experience was amazing in every way and it developed my entrepreneurial side a great deal. I think that the trip around the world gave 

It made me able to trust myself and my ability to succeed at a very early age”, she continues. Returning from the trip around the world, Carla Cammilla didn’t quite know what she wanted to do with her life. She had always loved writing and so she entered a short film manuscript contest for the Danish newspaper, Politiken. That experience convinced her to go to Ebeltoft to study film, only to realise that she didn’t want to be a film director. No, it was the music that had caught her ears. She went to the bank, borrowed a lot of money and bought herself a couple of turntables. “I practised a lot in my living room. I arranged a party where I invited all the right people. One thing led to another and suddenly I was part of a DJ-duo, The Doll & The Dyke, playing almost every weekend,” she says. “The DJ-ing led to the electroduo Faggot Fairys, which became a big success. We had a lot of fun with that project for a couple of years and it was also just before this project came to life that I actually started ArtRebels.” To help and to have fun – that’s the goal The long, endless list of things that Carla Cammilla has done is quite breathtaking and it seems like everything, that she puts her mind to is bound to succeed. “I have always had an understand-

ArtRebels started out as a small project – an idea and a passion. Today, it has over seven employees and many more freelancers working with culture in a variety of forms. “I have found some extremely lovely and skilled people who, like me, have a need to do something meaningful with their lives. We are very different from each other and that is essential when you run a business. We each have a passion, whether it’s economics, art, technology, IT or marketing. The important thing is that we all work for the same cause; to make ArtRebels a community for all areas of art to meet and exchange ideas. We work together every day to make that happen and that is a huge privilege to me.”

ing for business and I have always been interested in entrepreneurship. On my travels, when I was younger, I found calmness within myself, which I have been able to use a lot in my work”, Carla Cammilla says. “For me, work has always been about creating something meaningful and helping others develop their talents. Everything I do just leads up to the fact that I seek to have a fun and meaningful life.”

Copenhagen – a place for creative entrepreneurs It is no coincidence that ArtRebels are based in Copenhagen, the city where Carla Cammilla grew up and still lives. Even though she travels often to gather inspiration, working in Copenhagen is a passion in itself. “Once a year I travel to Ibiza where I meditate, exercise and clear my thoughts. It is pure medicine for me and I use that trip for inspiration. I also travel to big cities, such as New York, once a year. That city is very inspiring. It is so alive and full of creative subcultures. I bring that home with me in the form of ideas and projects that I would like to realise here in Copenhagen”, she says.  WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 4 3

INTERVIEW

Even though Copenhagen, in many ways, is a first mover when it comes to supporting art projects and entrepreneurship, the city still lacks a few things, especially when it comes to making use of urban spaces for cultural events. “Copenhageners could easily be more open to each other and not be so afraid of rejection. But what we could really use more of is the exploitation of our street spaces, open areas in the city, and our many, deeply talented architects. We need more installation art in the city – to make use of our beautiful spaces and create something interesting,” Carla

“We are very different from each other and that is essential when you run a business.” Cammilla explains. Having said that, Copenhagen is still a place that Carla Cammilla enjoys showing to her foreign friends. “I am proud of Copenhagen because there are so many possibilities for entrepreneurs. The city is full of creative people, and I really want to create the best conditions for them. Every time I have visitors from other countries, I show them the underground movement in Copenhagen where all the fascinating art, music and film is being created. It’s not even difficult to find those places – you just have to ask around on the streets when you get here, or visit our website for advice”, she smiles. 44 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

WINE

Dan sh W nes When Canada, Slovenia, France and Germany are producing wine – why shouldn't Denmark also join the old guard and rising stars of winemaking? WORDS SANDRA NANETTE SKRIVER

46 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

D

enmark has been producing wine since 2000 when it was approved as a winemaking country by the EU. It now has four regions: Jutland, Fyn, Sealand and the Isle of Bornholm.

With its cool summers and fewer hours of light, one could argue that Denmark’s climate is naturally better suited to the growing of white wine grapes – a great example being those from Lilleø (especially Arwen) which are praised internationally. Yet, we stubbornly try to make red wines that, in many cases, still have some way to go. Now, the Danish producers and estates make both small and large batches of wine in a variety of styles, including red, white, rosé, sparkling and sweet wines. Danish wines still have some work to do before they can truly compete with the better-known wine producing countries – especially when you compare the prices – but progress can definitely be seen. Here are some of the more interesting ones we’ve stumbled upon recently. Skål!

Nordlund ’07 ( AV E D Ø R E , S E A L A N D )

The Danish Wine Center was one of the heavy influencers on the promotion of Danish wine with the prestigious cuvée Nordlund which has been produced since 2002 with the last vintage on sale at the moment being the 2008. This wine is made from two of the more ‘traditional’ Danish grapes, Rondo and Leon Millot. It has a dusty, gauzy kind of nose, and not much sign of fresh fruit with a bit of a metallic tang also appearing in the mouth. There’s a hint of some interesting umami flavours along with cheese, but it’s quickly replaced with high acidity and too much wood in the mouth. I love and respect you, Nordlund, but you’re damn hard to drink.

Rich, with a nice applely acidity and structure like ripe, Granny Smith apples. Vanilla, slightly metallic, rhubarb and a hint of asparagus. A bit fizzy on the front of the tongue. A rather light white wine that could be drunk alone as well as with spring dishes. In the nose, a slight hint of cardboard appears, but we can quickly eliminate the possibility that the wine is corked since it has a screw cap.

WHERE TO SAMPLE DANISH WINE

Cherry wine!? You betcha! Frederiksdal’s wine is possibly one of the most prestigious wine projects on Danish soil and words like ”best cherry wine in the world”, as well as ”wine to compete with Port, Banyuls and Maury” are some of the claims that are being passed around. This ‘basic’ dessert wine oozes with dark, sun ripened cherry. Salty, rich, spicy and intense, but still with a nice acidity that catches and balances the concentrated sweetness. Small, black olives and almond in the nose – simply just happiness in a glass. Also try out the other smashing wines in the series – for example the ‘Reserve’ and the highly interesting (and even more ”fresh cherry”-ish) 'Sur Lie'.

Malus Unika Nobilis 2012, Cold Hands Winery

Malus Unika Cuvée Pink 2011, Cold Hands Winery

(RANDERS, JUTLAND)

(RANDERS, JUTLAND)

One of two ‘wines’ in this list made not from grapes but rather Elstar apples – a socalled fruit wine utilising the champagne method of production. A little something extra has been added to this wine: Nobilis spruce. A sweet, rich nose with unfiltered, oxidized apples and perfumy, almost soapy notes with the presence of the spruce. Fresh herbs, cucumber with some metallic taste as well. A kind of bitterness is also evident but it still feels fresh and ‘cleansing’ in the mouth. Musk, high acidity and goat!

Here’s something for the ladies (and the fellas, when the ladies look away). Made also from Elstar apples, but also with pear quince and dry redcurrant, which are added during vinificaiton. Beautiful, bright red in colour and big with wild bubbles that appear in the glass helping the scent of honey, together with soda-pop raspberries, steam up from the wine. Nice acidity yet quite sweet with a good mouth-feel and taste of pear and almond.

When I first call up the producer of Ørnberg, he’s in his fields looking after his grapes. Something I get the impression he does a lot. And you can feel something close to love in this wine too. A noble, sweet wine made from the grapes Solaris and Ortega. The wine only comes in 0.5 litre bottles but with this intensity, that’s more than enough. A very sweet dessert wine, which I assume would also go very well with heavy, creamy cheeses. A very good balance between sweetness, acidity and freshness from the fruit.

Hvid Burgundia 2012

Ørnberg Perle 2012

Gabriel Cuvée No. 117

(BORNHOLM)

(SJ. ODDE, SEALAND)

(TØLLØSE, SEALAND)

Edible quality products from Bornholm have ridden a wave of success the last few years: from liquorice and juices to free-range meat and poultry. Now the time apparently has come for the first wine from the sunny island, which is made from the grape Orion by the winery Lille Gadegaard. Light, perfumy notes steam up from the glass. It almost feels a little 'pétillant' (or sparkling) in the mouth, which gives a refreshing ‘zing’. A fruity, aromatic yet simple wine that will be enjoyed to its fullest in bright, warm sun and large gulps. Currently, the only place to taste this wine is in the restaurant Kofoed in Copenhagen.

48 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

Another bubbly, this time a blend made from Phoenix, Siegerrebe and Solaris grapes. It almost smells like a fruit wine made from elderflower. Highly perfumed nose, like you would find with an Italian Asti. Nice bubbles and very noticeable acidity resembling a Granny Smith apple. Has some sweetness too, which unfortunately does not feel well incorporated in the wine as well of a weird, dull smell that sometimes overpowers the other aromas. But, drinkable? Yes.

(SJ. ODDE, SEALAND)

This fairly new producer of Danish bubbly uses a minimum of sulphites and is perhaps one of the most interesting wineries in the market right now. Big, bright bubbles are integrated in a golden, almost misty, wine. Very perfumed (perhaps muscaty?) in the nose. Summer berries, redcurrant and a whole lot of oxidized apples blend on the tongue with vegetable and tomato notes. Full in the mouth, and with a degree of sweetness that suits the oxidized tones.

We took a stroll to explore the (very) varied opportunities this place has to offer.

FOOD

PALÆO

CAVA BAR

WE opt for the Meatza with goats cheese and the Elixir of Life-juice made of fresh apple, spinach and cucumber for a total of 99 kr. The big, minced, organic beef patty of the Meatza is satisfyingly juicy and greasy with intense meat flavour and a nice, almost caramelized surface. The dark, pickled mushrooms and red pepper purée don’t impress the taste buds, but the parsley pesto is tasty and intense. The cucumber-juice lacks some zing or deepness so we try another made with apple, strawberry, lemon and chili (39 DKK for a small juice) which is much more satisfying.

WE move out into the open in the space between the two halls and order two glasses of Cava El Veijo Brut (40 DKK) filled to the top of an open glass called a coupe, which is perhaps more suited for growing cress. But with the simple, fruity, roughly textured yet nicely balanced cava (as well as the sun on our faces) it actually works rather well. There are several cavas to choose from, including a semi-sweet version with a bright red colour. If you crave solid sustenance, it’s possible to dig into a shellfish platter (125 DKK) with langoustines, mussels, clams and tiger prawns, as well as oysters and other seafood. Every Thursday (17-19) and Sunday (15-17), and if the weather is good, there’s live music in the small square.

FOOD

ARLA UNIKA

LE PETIT

DENMARK'S largest milk producer and buyer is, without doubt, Arla who are responsible for both a number of good and some bad cheeses. The cheeses at Unika are on the good (if not great) side. The Arla Unika series is represented at many top restaurants in Copenhagen (previously the only place to taste them), but with this stand in Torvehallerne, ‘ordinary’ people now have the opportunity to not only taste them, but take them home as well. Anders Boas Halkiær is one of the jolly cheese men behind the counter and is always ready to provide you with good advice – or some weird chutney you discover goes perfectly with your cheese. Arla Unika also has a small selection of interesting wines to match the cheeses from France (especially Jura), Germany and Denmark. In terms of cheese, we chose the young Blue Gjesing and a more aged Havarti style cheese. The blue cheese was, as Anders advised us, very mild and creamy, while the Havarti was intense and almost buttery to the taste with nice salt crystals.

COPENHAGEN'S most special wine bar is situated in Torvehallerne – and actually couldn’t be anywhere else. Whereas other bars in Copenhagen, by obvious necessity, consists of a small closed space behind an inviting door, Le Petit’s open bar is randomly squeezed together between the diversity of the other shops in Hall 1 – next to Arla Unika, an icecream shop and across from a fresh pasta-maker. There, you can prop yourself against the cosy wooden counter with a good glass of specially selected wine. We opted for a glass of Bourgogne Blanc from Alain Chavy (55 DKK). Refreshing, crisp, good minerality and a light, quite perfumed nose. To accompany the wine we chose a plate of very tasty salami and Serrano ham.

A XOCO

OMEGN

IT'S definitely worth paying a visit to the A XOCO stand where you’ll find some very nice chocolates, even if it’s positioned pretty high on the hype-scale. Although created by big Danish producer, Anton Berg, this niche brand demonstrates a different and interesting path for chocolate. We picked ten different chocolates from the counter with fillings made from fresh cream (75 DKK). Along with piemonte nougat with salt crystals and orange marzipan was bacon with tomato, white chocolate with pastis and goats cheese with thyme (You can, of course, choose how adventurous you’re willing to be). Each little confection had good bite to the chocolate and a soft and harmonic filling inside even if some were a little on the unusual side.

THIS is the place to go if you crave good quality and hardto-find products – often ecological and always as close to ‘local’ as possible. Here you can find chickens from Dalbakkegaard who have lived a proper life eating proper food, free-range eggs, excellent cheeses, Danish beer from the Herslev brewery as well as from the great Gitte Holmboe who is behind Bøgedal Beer (also available on draft at Omegn). There are also organic jams and juices from Sweden, Danish smoked bacon, flour of all sorts, salami of red deer or pheasant, pates and honey from bees living in the city. It’s also possible to have a bite while you’re here. For example, the classical Danish dish ‘Skipperlabskovs’ (mashed potatoes, beef and homemade pickled beetroot).

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, ART Copenhagen is filled with amazing galleries, both big and famous as well as small and hidden. WHERE2GO guides you to a small, but versatile, selection of galleries with both a lot and nothing at all in common – besides art, of course.

Galleri Jules Julian Palægade 7, 1261 Copenhagen K Galleri Jules Julian features Danish and international contemporary art in a variety of media and styles. Some of the artists associated with the gallery are well recognised by the international art scene while others are young, newly hatched artists with both talent and potential. With regularly changing exhibitions, the gallery aims to present skewed, evocative and thought provoking work where the boundaries between art and reality are questioned. The natural and the artificial are challenged and blurred.

Galleri Tom Christoffersen Skindergade 5, 1159, Copenhagen K Opening in 2002 at its location in the centre of Copenhagen by director Tom Christoffersen, the gallery has now become quite an institution on the Danish gallery scene, with ever-changing exhibitions and hence, a lot of openings. The gallery's diverse and experimental program presents a variety of media and approaches to art from both emerging and established Danish and international artists. A small part of the gallery is called Cube and is run as a parallel show to the main exhibition space and is primarily reserved for artists working with photography.

Gallery Kontraframe Flæsketorvet 77-79, Copenhagen V Just next door to the much more famous (and very hipster-ish) V1 Gallery is Kontraframe, situated in an old offal processing factory, dominated by tiles and stainless steel. The two photographers behind Kontraframe, Thorbjørn Hansen and Tobias Dinesen, exhibit their own as well as others’ photographic projects using a patented printing method that the gallery is named after. The opening parties have acquired an almost infamous reputation, offering a well stocked bar with great sparkling wine and cheap beer. The bar may be cheap, but be careful, you may catch yourself thinking ”maybe I’ll just buy some art, since I’m here anyway”.

Gallerie Mikael Andersen Bredgade 63, 1260 Copenhagen K Established in 1989 and dedicated to exhibitions of Danish and International contemporary art, the profile of Gallerie Mikael Andersen relies on some very talented artists of the younger generation as well as a number of important Danish and International artists that emerged on the art scene in the eighties and nineties. Located in the art epicentre – judging by the density of galleries in the area – Mikael Andersen offers an often very interesting and brave line-up of artists in its white painted room and parquet floors.

IMO Ny Carlsberg Vej 68, 1760 Copenhagen V IMO was established in 2009 and is an artist-run gallery located in a spacious garage in Copenhagen. The gallery was founded by a group of artists in early 2009 with the aim of creating something that was part gallery, part party space, and part cultural centre. IMO represents the founding artists and they present what appeals to them, hence the name (In My Opinion). The diversity of IMO’s artists is reflected in the versatility of the programme with everchanging ideas, points-of-view and artists, whether it’s new or old, art or culture. As long as it’s a little bit weird – and preferably a bit provocative too.

SHOPPING GUIDE

SHOP STYLISH, SIMPLE Riding high on the international hype surrounding all things Scandinavian, Danish fashion has never looked better. We’ve set our sartorial sights on the best Copenhagen has to offer in Danish design.

C

openhagen’s small size and pedestrianised streets make shopping in the city a pleasant and no-fuss experience with an impressive array of retail therapy options for the fashion conscious. Start your shopping trip at Vognmagergade, to the right of The King’s Garden, and make your way through the criss-cross of shopping streets. The tour ends near Strøget, Denmark’s most famous pedestrian street from where you can continue your shopping tour.

76 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN The trip begins in Baum und Pferdgarten’s recently opened flagship store on Vognmagergade in Copenhagen’s centre. Baum and Pferdgarten is a renowned Danish brand established in 1999 by Rikke Baumgarten and Helle Hestehave who set out to create a fashion line that differed from the masses. The brand is internationally recognised for its quirky prints, playful attitude and innovative design. In the store you will also find the Danish brand, Bruuns Bazaar. VOGNMAGERGADE 2

RÜTZOU Continue down Gammel Mønt, and turn left onto Store Regnegade. At number 3, you will find one of Denmark’s most exclusive brands for women. Step inside and experience the feminine, modern and eclectic design that has made Rützou one of Denmark’s most recognised fashion brands. Feminine prints, materials and cuts constitute the DNA of the brand, founded by designer, Susanne Rützou. The store is the perfect place for a spot of Danish retail therapy. STORE REGNEGADE 3

AND SCANDINAVIAN

GANNI A little further down Store Regnegade, you’ll find the vivacious and energetic fashion brand, Ganni. Ganni is one of Denmark’s youngest fashion success stories. The design of the brand focuses on sexy and lively pieces that aren’t governed by short-lived trends and fleeting fads. The designers prefer to create instant wardrobe favourites through classical, wearable and vibrant styles that let the personality of the wearer shine through. STORE REGNEGADE 12

MUNTHE PLUS SIMONSEN Continue down Store Regnegade and turn right into Ny Østergade. When you hit Grønnegade, turn right again. Stop at number 10 to discover Munthe plus Simonsens’ elegant flagship store. The designer, Naja Munthe, finds her inspiration in the rough Scandinavian nature and culture which she combines in designs that are both laidback, feminine and glamorous – always with a raw edge. The clothes are made from an uncompromisingly high quality of materials, such as wool, silk and leather.

WOOD WOOD On the corner of Grønnegade and Gammel Mønt, you’ll find the hip, urban store, Wood Wood. Treading the fine line between feminine and masculine, Wood Wood plays with minimalistic cuts and humorous prints while always maintaining a classic, yet edgy, style. The three designers have reinvented street wear by creating exclusive and smart items that have turned into something of a Copenhagen phenomenon. The store is unisex, and has a wide range of other brands such as Comme des Garçons and the newly revived Kenzo. GRØNNEGADE 1

BRUUNS BAZAAR Turn around and continue back up Pilestræde. Turn left onto Kronprinsensgade. Bruuns Bazaar is located in number 8 and 9 where you will find women’s and men’s wear respectively. Nothing quite demonstrates clean-cut, simple, understated and elegant Scandinavian design quite like Bruuns Bazaar. With its mixture of feminine and masculine cuts, luxurious fabrics and soft, graceful colours, the brand is always effortlessly stylish with pieces that work season after season. With his playful and sexy style, Mads Nørgaard has been at the forefront of Danish fashion for almost three decades. We checked in with Mads to talk about personal style, Danish fashionconsciousness and his favourite spots in Copenhagen.

MADS NØRGAARD 82 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

Words Luise Gregersen

DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

WHAT'S YOUR GO-TO EAU DE COLOGNE?

My style is a bit understated and casual, but I always try to keep an edge. I don’t want my clothes to be too loud and attention-seeking. My aim is to have an understated look so that people will appreciate the overall impact.

All of my colognes are from Commes des Garçons, but it’s hard to pick a favourite.

WHAT IS COPENHAGEN’S MOST STYLISH AREA FOR PEOPLE SPOTTING?

I would have to say central Nørrebro or Vesterbro. That’s ‘where to go’, when it comes to cultural happenings and it’s where you’ll find the highest concentration of young and stylish people.

WHICH BRAND DOMINATES YOUR WARDROBE?

Often I try to wear my own creations. I could wear design samples to see which items work and have the potential to go into production. Besides from my own brand, I have quite a few sneakers – most of them from Adidas.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO SHOP IN COPENHAGEN? WHICH MAN OR WOMAN WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE WEARING YOUR COLLECTION?

COMME DES GARÇONS, EAU DE TOILETTE ’ZAGORSK’ 50 ML, 490 DKK. Spotted on polyvore.com WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO DO A DESIGN COLLABORATION WITH?

Mads’ favourite sneakers are from Adidas.

WHICH ITEM HAS BEEN IN YOUR WARDROBE THE LONGEST?

I have a pair of A.P.C. Jeans that are at least 15 years old. I don’t wear them often, but I used them for a few years and then lent them to Chris Pedersen (editor of Cover, a Danish fashion magazine, ed.). He then used them for a couple of years, before giving them back to me. Now I’m just waiting for him to ask for them back. So in a way, you could say that Chris and I have shared custody of the jeans.

My ultimate dream would be if Rei Kawakubo, who is the creative director of Commes des Garçons, would co-design our iconic Nørgaard paa Strøget T-shirt no. 101. We have done that a couple of times before, most recently with Acne.

We are designing a football scarf, and it would be really cool to see Zlatan Ibrahimovi (Swedish football player, ed.) wearing it. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ITEM FROM YOUR OWN COLLECTION?

There are a couple of shops that I really like. Danish designer Henrik Vibskov’s shop in Krystalgade is an amazing place with an astonishing ambience. Cinnober, which is an independent bookshop near the Round Tower, is always a unique and extraordinary experience and I always enjoy visiting Torvehallerne.

My favourite item from the summer collection is a jacket from the men’s collection. It’s grey with dark blue dots and it looks really sharp.

Henrik Vibskovs quirky boutique in Krystalgade is one of Mads’ favourite shops in Copenhagen.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE DANES’ FASHION SENSE TO A FOREIGNER?

JACKET, MADS NØRGAARD, 900 DKK

YOUR FATHER IS THE ‘GRAND OLD MAN’ OF DANISH FASHION. WHAT IS THE BEST FASHION ADVICE HE HAS PASSED ON TO YOU?

T-SHIRT, NØRGAARD PAA STRØGET, 235 DKK

It has always been very important to him that fashion should be seductive. Of course it’s also important that the items are practical and warm – especially in a country like Denmark – but above all, fashion should always aim to be seductive.

Casual, laid-back, sensible and sexy! Often it’s hard for foreigners to understand how fashion can be the least bit sensible while still being sexy. For Danes, the correlation between sexy and sensible comes naturally. It’s also worth noticing that we are very fashion and design conscious without really being aware of it ourselves. YOU ARE VERY KNOWN FOR YOUR STRIPES – DO YOU EVER TIRE OF THEM?

Yes, but then I just throw on something with dots instead …

PROMOTION

TURN BACK TIME Do you wish you had smoother skin, higher cheekbones, or fuller and more kissable lips? Well, who doesn’t? WHERE2GO’s Tove Hunter has tested the miracle filler, Restylane, on her own skin, and as a result she feels several years younger.

I

am always looking to improve my skin and look my best – especially now, with summer just around the corner. However beautiful skin and youth stick together and let’s face it – I’m not getting any younger. One of the things that’s been bothering me lately is that my cheeks seem to have lost their youthful smoothness and full look. I am very excited to try Restylane and to see if it can give me back a few years on my cheeks.

THE TREATMENT The minute I walk in the door at the Alfa Omega Clinic I am greeted by a warm and relaxing atmosphere. Mitte, the owner and nurse that is going to perform the treatment on me, takes me through the procedure, and I feel completely safe and wellinformed. The surroundings are luxurious and the beautiful allwhite décor gives off a trusty professional vibe that takes away any anxiety, I had before I arrived. As I am lying in a comfortable white-linen bed, surrounded by candles and fresh flowers, I’m relaxed and ready to embrace the small pain I expect to experience, when she takes out the needle. However, I quickly discover that in this particular area, there is no pain to fear. I feel a tiny poke in my cheek, and with a small thin needle the gel is placed under the surface of my skin. Surprisingly, the injection of Restylane in this area doesn’t hurt at all, I can barely feel it. Afterwards Mitte hands me a mirror, and I immediately see the result. I am amazed – it looks completely natural, the last ten years magically seem to have disappeared from my skin. The treatment has given me back my perky full cheeks and on top of this, the small lines around my chin and jaw area benefit from the effect as well as they have been straightened out a bit. Summertime – here I come!

88 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

ALFA OMEGA KLINIKKEN Højbro Plads 21 1200 København K Tel: +45 32 203 203 www.alfaomegaklinikken.dk Restylane Treatment: Price starting at 3.500 DKK

WHAT IS RESTYLANE?

Restylane is a filler that adds moisture to your skin from the inside. It’s ideal for smoothing out static wrinkles, especially on your forehead, around your eyes, at the corner of your mouth and on your neck and hands. With a fine needle Restylane is placed underneath the wrinkle and by means of natural hyaluronic acid, which consists of small crystal shaped particles, your skin becomes more glossy, and the small, fines lines are flattened. Your neckline attains youthful look and the visibility of veins your hands is reduced. Restylane gives your skin a better elasticity and structure and it is scientifically proven that products improve the quality of your skin. The result of a treatment can be seen immediately and the effect will normally last from 6-12 months. With repeated treatments the effect of Restylane is prolonged and in some cases the effect can become permanent.

Give your body

A BOOST

of energy

The key is five basic elements that will boost your body and mind.

W

e all know the feeling: The dark and cold winter has left its mark, and the body is lagging behind. It seems impossible to gather energy after an 8-hour work day, 5 km on a bike with the chilling wind in your face, shopping, cooking and checking the last work e-mails. The urge to relax on the sofa every night is overwhelming. How do you pull yourself up by the boot straps? Above all, it takes a mental change and willingness to change bad habits.

A healthy start

First of all, how you start your day is important to keep up a good energy level. Breakfast is the fuel our bodies need to kick-start the day and the first thing we take in. If you choose to eat a healthy and nutritional breakfast with lots of fruits, nuts and wholegrain, it will optimise your cells’ ability to function throughout the day. The internet is filled with amazing recipes for inspiration like, for instance, the colourful food blog GreensKitchenStories.com. Try the tasty Raw Buckwheat porridge or the healthy banana and blueberry pancakes; it will give you a boost of energy and keep you going until lunch.

Supplement your healthy diet

A precondition for having a healthy and energised 92 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

body is to load it with necessary nutrients. Over the last decade, the focus has targeted the inside of the body when it comes to beauty, wellbeing and energy. For the same reason, there is a wide variety of good, natural food supplements available on the market. Treat your body to extra energy with Ginseng, which has been used through the ages and is well known for its beneficial effects. Ginseng not only induces awareness of the mind it also boosts strength and energy of the body and is exactly what is needed when the body feels drained. Also, be sure to treat your body with other supplements like vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fish oil – it will all boost the natural energy production of the body.

Exercise

Bad excuses are easy to make and extra time is hard to come by – especially when it comes to exercise. This is the case for many of us. At the same time, most of us can agree that energy does not increase when we sit still. Basically, the body functions like a wind turbine. When it stands still, it stops producing energy and when it moves, it starts producing energy. Give your body the opportunity to produce energy by using energy. Take the bike to work, make time for a walk during your break or throw down a yoga mat in front of the TV and do some exercises.

Prioritise your time

A newly launched ginseng product that targets the genes and energy at the core is the supplement R2 from Pharmanex. If you want extra energy, this innovative product provides you with strength during the day with R2 Day, and allows you to reload and cleanse the body at night with R2 Night. PHARMANEX R² NIGHT 60 CAPS. AND R² DAY 180 CAPS., 951 DKK AT WWW.NUSKIN.COM

The human body needs to recuperate in order to be able to maintain a constant energy level. But when you’re juggling with a career, family life, friends and hobbies, it can be challenging to find the time to relax and slow down. Listen to your body’s signals. Prioritize your calendar and forget about spending time with people or being in situations that cause you stress. It is your life and the relationships in it that are the most important things, so be selfish once in a while and say no instead of yes. If you say yes to everything, your list of things to do will become extremely long and you will end up disappointing yourself and the people

around you. So prioritise correctly and you will see your energy level rise.

Breathe and meditate

Allow yourself to have a break a couple of times a day. Sit down in a quiet place and take a few deep breaths. Mindfulness is a great way to gain immediate energy and concentration in a stressful, everyday life. A key point about mindfulness is that you can learn to relax, be present and have full attention on what is right now. Use it and you will feel a renewing wave of energy. Download one of the many available apps and use it whenever you have a moment. Your body will thank you with a revitalising kick of energy. WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 9 3

STRESS-FIX PEDICURE

Are you prepared to parade your feet around in cute summer sandals or are they screaming for a little TLC? WHERE2GO’s Cathrine Park has tested the ultimate treatment for tired and over-worked feet.

I

am so ready for the sun, sea and sandal season, but my feet, not so much. They’re still showing signs of months spent in socks and heavy, closed shoes and a tiring work schedule. Thus, with dried out heels, toenails looking less than lovely and feet that are simply just too tired of carrying me around – I am excited to try the new ‘Aveda Stress-Fix Pedicure’ at Palma Salon & Spa in the heart of Copenhagen. The treatment: This certainly isn’t your everyday 'pedi' – it’s an experience that combines the traditional beautification of your tootsies with the power of acupressure, reflexology and aromaology to revitalise you senses, refresh your spirits and melt away tension. I’m greeted by Sarah who takes me into a beautiful and modern treatment room that oozes

of Scandinavian design tradition with its light wooden interior and cool and tiled shower unit. The treatment begins with a breathing exercise that incorporates an aroma blend of certified organic French lavender, lavandin and clary sage, which is clinically proven to reduce feelings of stress. While my feet are soaking in the foot bath with essential oils and I’m enjoying my herbal tea and dark chocolate, Sarah not only pampers me with exfoliation and the essential filing, buffing, cutting and removal of cuticles, she also tends to my arms and hands with a nice massage to relieve any tension. All in all, this treatment is the perfect remedy for slightly abused feet, and the foot massage that follows is simply icing on the cake. I’m now resting comfortably on the treatment bed while Sarah meticulously massages my feet and toes using acupressure and reflexology. It feels great and doesn’t hurt at all. In fact, it feels so relaxing that I’m almost dozing off. But all good things must come to an end and before I’m ready to let my feet and toenails see the light of day, Sarah paints them to perfection with a polish of my choice. The drying of the nail polish demands patience but the waiting time is delicious since I’m spoilt with a refreshing elderflower sorbet and a glass of ice water. Bliss!

aving a stressful schedule has taken its toll on my complexion which leaves a lot to be desired. So when I do finally find the time to get a facial, I’m not simply looking for a relaxing pampering with the beautician tip-toeing around my problem areas, I’m after results in the form of visible improvement to my skin. Cue the iS FiSZZ Facial. The treatment: If you ask me, there are two types of facials. Those that give you that lush, indulged feeling that lasts for twenty minutes, and the ones that work on a no pain, no gain basis and last for weeks. The iS FiSZZ facial has managed to combine the two into a glorious and effective treatment that you can tell is working without the least bit of discomfort. The promise? A revived, smoother and brighter complexion. The first step of the facial is the sweet-smelling and gently warming honey cleanser. Next, a clarifying mud mask is applied to my skin, which is supposed to purify and drain toxins from my pores – a slight tingling sensation tells me the ingredients are working their magic. While wearing the FiSZZ Masque System, my face is sprayed with a copper mist which creates the unique effervescent sensation that has given the treatment its affectionate nickname, ‘The Champagne Facial’. You can feel the bubbles popping against your skin, working to revive your complexion. My tingling face is then swiftly cooled down with cold compresses and a reparative moisturizer before an SPF is applied. The verdict? The results are both immediate and long lasting. Days later, my skin continues to look clean and vibrant.

THE HOLLYWOOD TREATMENT

Have you ever wondered how super stars always seem to sport a radiant, youthful and utterly flawless complexion? The reason is JetPeel, a facial treatment that is now finally available in Copenhagen. Cathrine Park checked it out.

W

hen the opportunity arose to try the so called JetPeel treatment, I jumped at the chance. I’m not exactly 20 anymore and don’t feel the need to look like I am, but still, I’m curious to try out the popular facial that so many celebrities use as an alternative to cosmetic surgery or Botox. The treatment: Although I must admit the

words ‘jet’ and ‘peel’ don’t exactly inspire confidence when talking about treatments for one's face, the pre-treatment brief does sound utterly promising: JetPeel Complete works by removing layers of dead skin cells, hydrating the skin with a moisturising jet stream and infusing oxygen and vitamins into the deep dermis to recharge cells and stimulate collagen production. It is painless, has no down time, uses no chemicals and is suitable for all skin types. Sign me up, asap! My treatment begins with a conventional wash followed by the microdermabrasion. My therapist, Linn, uses a high-speed instrument with an abrasive wheel to remove the outer layers of my skin. It feels quite effective and it’s really nice to know that she’s sloughing off dead cells and gunk that aren’t doing my complexion any good. Next, the jet peel begins. Linn warns me that it might feel a little cold and unusual and she’s right. It feels as though

“ D ID YOU KNOW THAT MANY CELEBS USE JET PEEL AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO BOTOX?"

a cold mist is being blasted onto my face through a straw. But the supersonic infusion technique simply allows for better penetration of the oxygen and the rejuvenating vitaminrich solution and I’m happy to observe that it does make my skin feel and look truly refreshed and hydrated. Finally, non-invasive light therapy PDT (Photo Dynamic Therapy) is used to stimulate deeper skin tissue and to reduce redness and inflammation, which is why the treatment is actually ideal for problem skin such as acne and rosacea. So does it work? Am I now ready for the red carpet? My skin has never felt so thoroughly clean, smooth and soft before. Obviously this sort of treatment works best after a course of five or more sessions, especially if you want the full benefits and lasting results. But a single treatment gives me a glowing and healthy complexion fit for a night out on the town. WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 9 7

Why do you live in Copenhagen? My heart belongs for better or worse to a Dane. When we decided to move to DK from the USA back in the early 90s, I agreed to live here for a 5 year run with an option. I took the option. What do you like most about living here? That it feels like home and can still be really foreign at the same time. What do you like least about living here? The obligation to go outside if the sun is shining and fast female bicycle riders laying heavy on the bell. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? That after a couple decades living in Copenhagen some locals still ask if I 'like' living here. What’s your favourite place in Copenhagen? As a tourist, there is no more grand site in Copenhagen in my opinion than the view from Knipplesbro facing the city. Especially just near sundown when the skyline is in silhouette biking back to the city centre from a hazy visit to a cool cafe in Christiania. I think I have several favourite places in there. Who can choose? Anywhere in the sun is my final answer.

Why do you live in Copenhagen? I have lived in Saigon, Chamonix, Geneva and Washington D.C, but my heart and mind belongs in Scandinavia and Copenhagen. It is a wonderful city with so much to offer. What do you like most about living here? I love that I can take my bike all around the city in no time. On my bike, I can feel the fresh winter frost on my cheek, the warmth and the wind in my hair in the summer and I feel connected to the people of the city. What do you like least about living here? So far there’s nothing I don’t like, but it would be great if there were a greater selection of foreign restaurants. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? There are so many creative people here and therefore lots of activities – there is always something to do. I feel young and vibrant with all these exciting things going on. What's your favourite place in Copenhagen? That’s, with absolute certainty, Vesterbro. When I came to Copenhagen 11 years ago and researched every area of the city to find a spot for my restaurant, I fell completely in love with this place and I’m still in love today. Why do you live in Copenhagen? Love. My ex-wife is Danish and we have three wonderful children who are extremely happy to have their father living here. What do you like most about living here? The people. I have made some really good friends in Copenhagen and Copenhagen has the most wonderful architecture and design, which can be found everywhere from schools to hospitals. What do you like least about living here? The weather sucks 80% of the time but when the sun is shining, the mood of the city changes completely. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? The lack of understanding that we are living in a market economy, which in reality means that there will always be an inequality of resources between the people. What’s your favourite place in Copenhagen? Landemærket Sandwich, where you can find the best sandwiches in town. Beau Marché Cafe is a cool place to meet friends and at night, La Fontaine has an eclectic mix of people listening to live jazz. 104 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

Why do you live in Copenhagen? I fell in love many years ago with a Copenhagener. It’s been six years and still going strong! What do you like most about living here? I love chilling with friends in small cafes. I love riding my bike across the city when the sun is out and sitting by the lakes listening to live music, reading or just enjoying the scenery. What do you like least about living here? I think there’s too much concrete in Copenhagen, especially in the inner city – it would be great with a bit more green nature. Apartments are also a nightmare to find and it would be great to have a few more summer months! What surprises you most about Copenhagen? In the six years I’ve lived here, I’ve only met my neighbours at most once or twice, but when I lost my wallet a while ago, my neighbour found it and handed it to me. So even though we’re invisible to each other, it seems like we care and look out for one another. What’s your favourite place in Copenhagen? It’s Nørrebro – my hood. I love the mix of cultures here and the fact that you have everything you need around you, plus it’s only a few minutes bike ride to get downtown. WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 1 0 5

Why do you live in Copenhagen? The reason for living here in Copenhagen has actually changed several times since I moved here. Now, it's because I really like Copenhagen as a city, as a ‘place to be’. It's a very easy city to find ‘your place’ in. What do you like most about living here? It's a place where you can find an amazing balance between ‘work’ and ‘play’. The systems allow you to have great opportunities to fulfil many aspects of your life, which brings you joy. What do you like least about living here? It has a lot to do with people’s attitude towards each other. In my opinion, people aren't nearly as friendly with each other as they could be. It steals away from the city's charm. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? The fact that it is such a village. I never envisioned that when moving here – I thought that it would be much more of a buzzing capital. At the same time, this is also one of the very comforting things about Copenhagen. What’s your favourite place in Copenhagen? My favourite place in Copenhagen is anywhere by the water. There are a lot of great places to sit and enjoy the view. Growing up in a land-locked province with the ocean far away gives a person a huge appreciation for the water. 106 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

Why do you live in Copenhagen? I would never have imagined living in Copenhagen until I met the love of my life one crazy evening in Paris. After a while I decided to move up here with him. What do you like most about living here? Using my bike daily – just crossing the city in only few minutes. I also love the simplicity of its inhabitants and the idea of living so close to the beach. What do you like least about living here? The wind... brrrr! And I hate the lack of light during wintertime. Thank God for your julefrokoster (Danish Christmas parties) in December – I now understand the meaning of ‘hygge’. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? Its hibernation during wintertime. There is no one in the streets and only a few people in the shops and restaurants. Copenhagen is totally different when the nice season comes and everybody is out – the city becomes more lively. What’s you favourite place in Copenhagen? I love the museums – Glyptoteket and Statens Museum for Kunst. I love the collections and the architecture. Why do you live in Copenhagen? The reason I am living here is that I can enjoy city life and the changing of the four seasons at the same time. What do you like most about living here? I like the fantastic view of Copenhagen from my office window, which is located on the 9th floor of a tall building near Fisketorvet. My favourite view is the Opera House and dozens of wind turbines beyond the canal. What do you like least about living here? I don’t like the tall and large chimneys of the district heating facilities, which are always discharging smoke. They don't match Copenhagen. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? The bike riders enjoy a higher priority than pedestrians. For instance, after snowfall they clean up bike lanes first, leaving pedestrians way behind. The changing of the weather and the way Copenhageners talk about the weather is also surprising. 108 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

Trips to the ‘Udlændingeservice’ office! Any foreigner reading this will know exactly what I mean. Something really has to be done about the system for obtaining a work permit. What surprises you most about Copenhagen? Over the past five years that I have lived in Copenhagen, I have really enjoyed witnessing all of the new cocktail bars and well-priced restaurants open. This together with the evolution of Nordic food culture has really made Copenhagen an exciting place to live. What’s your favourite place in Copenhagen? Driving by the lakes in the winter when the sun is shining, the flowers popping out of the grass in Frederiksberg Have in the spring, swimming at Charlottenlund Fort in the summer and the colours of the leaves in Dyrehaven in the autumn. A

fter two years of extensive renovation, Hotel d’Angleterre reopened in May, and “The White Lady”, as the hotel is popularly called, has truly sprung back to life. At over 250 years old, d’Angleterre emerged from behind the scaffolding where skilled craftsmen had been sensitively reviving the enchanting classical façade and injecting new life into the hotel’s interiors to ensure the Sleeping Beauty can once again take her place as the queen of Kongens Nytorv and as a landmark in the city. Throughout the years, the hotel has welcomed notabilities such as Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Bill Clinton, Grace Kelly, Winston Churchill and Karen Blixen. Copenhageners have

referred to the five star hotel as being the height of luxury and many have enjoyed an Afternoon Tea in the restaurant overlooking Kongens Nytorv. But, as any other lady ageing gracefully, the hotel needed a little extra care to get back to the glory of former years. The hotel opened with 35 rooms and suites, and will achieve its full capacity with a total of 90 rooms – of which 60 are suites – by the end of the year. The hotel has retained the famous white façade while the window frames have been replaced with the capital’s characteristic ‘Copenhagen Green’. The new lobby area has opened up with its large glass frontage and offers a beautiful view of Copenhagen. WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 1 1 1

FACTS ABOUT

D’ANGLETERRE D’Angleterre means ‘England’ in French and was attributed to the hotel in 1791 due to the “Englishmen’s Club” that shared the premises at the time. Restaurant Marchal is named after Jean Marchal, who ran a small restaurant with his wife Marie Coppy, which would later become the Hotel d’Angleterre. The Balthazar Champagne Bar serves over 160 different bottles of Champagne and Champagne cocktails. Hotel guests can enjoy the spa “Amazing Space d’Angleterre” with private treatment rooms as well as a fully equipped fitness room. The swimming pool will open in August.

Every floor has been modernised using handpicked deluxe-quality textiles, soft carpets, silk wall paper, hardwood, marble and stone. The original fireplaces have been kept throughout the hotel. The newly renovated Palm Court has a new 300 square metre wooden floor laid out in a Versailles pattern. During the renovation, an original balcony was discovered and has been rebuilt with space for a choir or orchestra under the mosaic roof. Hotel d’Angleterre is owned by the Remmen Foundation whose chairman, Else Marie Remmen, has been personally responsible for the interior design along with Creative Director Alan Evensen. “The heritage of the d’Angleterre is built on a love story; the love between Jean Marchal and Marie Coppy and similarly, our decision to take on this renovation task been an act of love. Love for the hotel and for Copenhagen,” says Else Marie Remmen. The Remmen Foundation is a charitable organisation and as such, all the profits go towards supporting charitable projects. “Working with people from all over the world is extremely inspiring,” Emborg says. Many people have wanted to work with the well renowned chef, but few have been granted access to the kitchen. Ronny Emborg’s concept for the restaurant does not involve any gastronomic fusions or special Nordic experiments. The menu is designed so that you can order food on an on-going basis as the night progresses and your appetite is aroused. Guests who prefer a more traditional approach will love the well thought out and stylish á la carte menu in the restaurant proper, where four ‘favourite dishes’ are personally selected and composed by Ronny Emborg himself. “My goal is to seduce our guests with the food we serve,” he explains. “I work with many different textures in each dish, beautiful colours and lovely aromas, so that every bite is tasty and perhaps also a little surprising,” he explains. “I would like for my guests to say ‘I have to taste the next dish too’ and for them to love what they are being served.”

INTERVIEW

I NEED TO Success as founder of clothing brand DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, the owner of several large houses, father of two kids from a long-term relationship – still something simple was missing in Keld Mikkelsen’s life. The answer for him was a return to his childhood love of music. It allowed him to let go of his need to have full control over things. WORDS MICHAEL KJÆRGAARD PHOTOS MARTIN BUBANDT

LE G TH O O T IN F GS WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 1 1 7

INTERVIEW

"I dream of, one day, being much better at making up my mind and being able to let go of my full control of DAY." nly ten years after he founded his own clothing brand Keld Mikkelsen was able to call himself a self-made millionaire. DAY Birger et Mikkelsen hit the spot right from its start in 1997, but success seldom comes without feeling the consequences of the work required to achieve it. Those consequences became clear to Mikkelsen on a day of sun and relaxation under Carribiean skies with longtime friend, drummer, Claes Antonsen: "Damn it Keld, you’re bloody stressed. You need to do something that doesn't involve taking charge of things. We're forming a band together," was his friend's diagnosis. And, as it turns out, music became an essential part of Mikkelsen’s life from that moment. THE GUITAR OF HIS DREAMS

To a teenage Mikkelsen, playing his guitar in Ringkøbing – about as far from rock ‘n’ roll as one could possibly get in 1970s Denmark – music was the very essence of ‘cool’. Curiously, music would become his passport to starting out in the fashion business when the founder of the clothing company, Bestseller, Troels Holch Povlsen, visited Ringkøbing's only music instrument store where Mikkelsen was working in 1976 – a job that gave him a little exposure to life outside his native provincial town. His talent for selling with a smile was apparent, and as he handed over a guitar to Mr. Povlsen, Mikkelsen was offered a job right on the spot. Following that, he rose quickly through the ranks at Bestseller to occupy several top positions. Almost forty years later, Keld Mikkelsen is sitting in the headquarters of DAY Birger et Mikkelsen in the heart of Copenhagen, surrounded by designer chairs and pillows. His hair and beard are both grey and long. He 118 | SUMMER 2013 | WHERE2GO.DK

looks as if the rock musician of his youth has come back to life – spirits are high. The effect of following his friend's advice by turning up his guitar's loudspeaker and surrendering to the camaraderie of band life shows on his face. "Music is, once again, playing a part in my life. I have finally bought the Gibson guitar of my dreams – it cost a fortune," he says with a smile. “The amazing thing about playing with friends is that I have re-discovered how much it means to me to do something I enjoy in the company of other people. I really get a kick out of it when we play and share a bottle of wine and when someone starts to tell a story or shares something personal. Though it certainly isn't the same kind of conversations we had 40 years ago on the tour bus, but playing music together is still great for helping grown up men share personal things," he says. HELP FROM BUSINESS PSYCHOLOGY

While Mikkelsen has been enjoying playing old rock classics on his guitar, he finds himself to have become more shrewd and insightful as the head of Day Birger et Mikkelsen. In the rehearsal room, he is able to let go of things and doesn’t have to make any business decisions. This liberation has put ideas in his head: "I dream of, one day, being much better at making up my mind and being able to let go of my full control of DAY. Just a little at least. We have recently launched a new, young brand called 2ND DAY. If I were to have anything to do with this brand, something would be very wrong. It would simply be a sign of arrogance if a 55 years old man were to decide what young people are to wear. I absolutely believe that many of the decisions in the company can, in the long run, be better made by younger employees, if they’re given the freedom to do so," he says.

INTERVIEW

"Unfortunately, I tend to make the decisions in the company simply because I am so used to it" owever, things are not always this simple when it comes to reality: "Unfortunately, I tend to make the decisions in the company simply because I am so used to it. If I could somehow begin to accept some outstanding person’s outstanding decisions, it would definitely be great for me and for the company, but it will not come easily to me," he says. To Keld Mikkelsen, this delegation of responsibility is essential which is why he is attending sessions with a business psychologist to help him learn how to let go: "I have a very complex character and the ability to see things from different angles at the same time. I tend to have several opinions on the same subject, and so decisions can depend on which side of me dominates at that moment. I definitely need to do something about this behaviour," he says. A COOL GUY

Seeing as it was serendipity that got Keld Mikkelsen into the clothing business in the first place, he often wonders why he has been so lucky to have had such great opportunities and how he has managed to make DAY both an internationally respected brand and commercially successful company: "I never find myself sitting with a whisky in my hand and a big cigar in my mouth telling myself how cool I am. I do remember one time though, sitting in a plane shortly after having launched DAY thinking to myself, 'yes! Now I’m in charge of things.' That gave me a wonderful feeling of freedom. Mind you, shortly after that, I realised how much work you need to put in if you want to be independent as a businessman," he says. A large amount of money came along with

the many hours that Mikkelsen spent in airplanes, hotel rooms and meeting rooms. For that reason he appreciates the lifestyle that money buys him when he’s having coffee in cafés in the Caribbean, with celebrities sitting at tables nearby: "It probably has to do with my being a hillbilly that I get a kick out of such things," he ponders as he laughs. HE BUYS HIMSELF SOME UNREST

Whether the stardust has rubbed off on him or not, Mikkelsen is under no illusion that the blessing of money is the path to happiness: "I certainly don't feel more happy now. Sure, I have the opportunity to experience the world, though not necessarily in a better way compared to booking myself a cheap charter holiday and staying at the cheapest hotel. However, now that this is my lifestyle, I wouldn't want to give up the things money buys me," he says. Just as he can't help seeing things from several angles at once when taking business decisions, Keld Mikkelsen is, at the same time, both the sensible businessman with full oversight of his economy and the happy consumer with loose pockets: "For me there is no doubt that a healthy economy gives me peace of mind. Therefore it makes me wonder why I tend to act in a manner where I end up risking my peace of mind, either by investing too much money in one shop, because of emotions rather than a business plan, or by buying something for myself that, in the end, means even more expense. It’s as if I am a bit scared of falling asleep inside. So, at the same time money gives me some freedom, I tend to act in such a way that ends up putting restrictions on my freedom." WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 1 2 3

FAVOURITE SPOTS Sundby Idrætspark

Morten Svendsen ART DIRECTOR

The home of my local football team, Fremad Amager. This is football as it used to be in the good old days; small stadium, cheap beer and an atmosphere of working class camaraderie and grilled sausages (really big and tasty, by the way). At the stadium, you’ll meet locals who have supported the team all their lives. It’s what you’d expect in England, but it actually exists at Fremad Amager too. Matchday is Sunday at 1 pm. Turn up 10 min before kickoff, grab a beer and if the sun is shining, find a place on the small lawn behind the goal. Enjoy. Englandsvej 61, 2300 Copenhagen S

McKluud

Nielsen & Co.

Kaffebaren

I’m not a coffee connoisseur and I really just prefer my coffee black. In Copenhagen you’ll find a lot of coffee shops (although not like the ones in Amsterdam…), but the coffee shop, Kaffebaren, located on the island of Amager is a hidden gem. It’s simple, quiet and cosy. They have a rich variety of coffee as well as homemade cookies. Be sure to try their famous ‘æblekage’ which goes along nicely with coffee. Downstairs they have a small selection of vinyl records for sale. What’s not to like? Æblestien 2, 2300 Copenhagen S www.facebook.com/kaffebarenamager

The coffee shop, Kaffebaren, located on the island of Amager is a hidden gem. It’s simple, quiet and cosy.

I am a big fan of polo and button down shirts – just ask my girlfriend. The best place in town to find those is Nielsen & Co. in the centre of Copenhagen. Among other brands, you’ll find Fred Perry and Pretty Green. So if you like to dress simple and sharp, don’t hesitate to visit the shop. Christian IX’s Gade 3, 1111 Copenhagen K, www.nielsenogco.com

Just as I like my coffee black, I like my beer cold. It’s dead simple really. And if you would like to have ‘a cold one’ as the Danes say, you owe it to yourself to visit one of Copenhagen’s many ‘værtshuse’, which are spread all over the city. There is no fancy interior, it’s mostly brown furniture and the people you’ll meet there are often working class or students – people just having a good time. My recommendation is McKluud in Vesterbro. It has all of the above, plus the beer is cheap and the music, excellent. Cheers. Istedgade 126, 1640 Copenhagen V, mckluud.dk

Restaurant Sundby Sejl

Back to the island of Amager. Near the beach you’ll find the restaurant, Sundby Sejl. The restaurant is located in a sailing club, situated on the waterfront, you’ll find peace and quiet after a long day of sightseeing. Just jump on the Metro and it will take you almost to the doorstep of the restaurant. You don’t have to be a member; it's open for everyone. The menu offers traditional Danish food with open sandwiches for lunch and steak, pork or fish for dinner. Prices are reasonable and, yes you guessed right, the beer is cold. Amager Strandvej 15, 2300 Copenhagen S, sundbysejl.dk

FAVOURITE SPOTS La Petanque

Tango y Vinos

One of my favourite places to enjoy a good glass of wine is at the Argentinian wine bar behind the old Royal Theater. The bar – with Malbeccoloured walls – is also a low-key tapas bar and during the weekends, they have musicians playing jazz, bossa nova, blues, soul, swing and of course, tango. Herluf Trolles Gade 9, 1052 Copenhagen K, tangoyvinos.dk

I’m still trying to eat my way through all the different kinds of pancakes they serve at La Petanque, which is a cosy and unpretentious French Crêperie. They also serve traditional French home cooking like onion soup and snails and of course they also provide loud Frenchmen in the kitchen. Rømersgade 9, 1362 Copenhagen K, lapetanque.dk

Chéz Ferial

I always love a good bargain and at the luxury second-hand shop, Chéz Ferial in Vesterbro, you will find a lot of good designer clothes and accessories, all at a very fair price – and new (well, old) stuff will be on the shelf every week. Valdemarsgade 36, 1667 Copenhagen V, chezferial.com

At Madsvinet the portions are generous, the prices are fair and the atmosphere is great. Madsvinet

Dansehallerne

I spend a lot of time at Dansehallerne for ballet practice, but even if you are not a dancer, it’s still a fun place to visit if you find yourself in the old historical Carlsberg area. The old brewery is now undergoing a big city renewal program and a lot of interesting things are happening around the area – outside bars, playgrounds, galleries and at Dansehallerne’s stage, you can see a contemporary dance performance or enjoy a nice meal at the restaurant Elefanten. Pasteursvej 20, 1799 Copenhagen V, dansehallerne.dk

On the outskirts of Vesterbro (in the suburban end as I call it) you'll find Madsvinet (the food pig). A small and trendy, ‘city-style’ restaurant located in a former butcher’s shop. Here you can get a rustic, but modern menu all cooked in the open kitchen. The portions are generous, the prices are fair and the atmosphere is great. They also serve some very tasty cocktails! Take a bus to the Little Mermaid and say hello to our biggest tourist attraction. Then follow the waterline south all the way until you reach Fisketorvet shopping mall. It'll take you about an hour, but it’s a fantastic way to discover Copenhagen. Wear good trainers for the walk.

A barbecue in the park

Copenhageners love to barbecue in public parks and I recommend you to try it too. Buy a ready-to-use barbecue in a supermarket, along with meat and veggies of your choice and then find a spot in Islands Brygge, Christianshavn, Ørstedsparken, or one of the many other parks. Please be considerate, be careful not to set the grass alight and do ask people around you if you have any doubts.

FAVOURITE SPOTS Amager Beach Park

Ved Stranden 10

This cool and cosy wine bar in Copenhagen, that goes by the name of its address, is one of my favourite summer hangouts. On warm days, you can sit outside at the tables and chairs along the canal and enjoy a nice glass (or three) of one of the many great wines, often meticulously selected from an array of biodynamic producers from France, Germany and Austria. They don’t have a wine list, but don’t worry, you don’t need to be a wine specialist to figure it all out – just show an interest in wine, and the friendly staff will take care of the rest. Bottles and glasses, available in a wide range of prices, can and really should be paired with the tasty selection of tapas! Ved Stranden 10, 1061 Copenhagen , vedstranden10.dk

Just down the street from where I live (and only 10 minutes by Metro from the city centre), you find the artificially constructed beach Amager Beach Park with a large sand island and an inner lagoon. There is usually a good range of activities going on such as kite surfing, diving, sea kayaking, skate boarding, beach volleyball, jogging and biking. I come here on the weekends all year round whenever I need a good, long walk. There’s an impressive view of the Øresund Bridge and you can also look across the water to Sweden. Take the Metro towards the airport and get off at Øresund or Amager Strand. Amager Strandvej 110, 2300 Copenhagen S

Restaurant Pluto

I have a crush on New York City – who doesn’t! Luckily, this restaurant gives me a taste of the Big Apple thanks to its raw interior with a lively and informal atmosphere. The menu is divided into snacks, cold meats, small and larger servings and you can either order your own dishes or share them with everyone at the table ‘family style’. Sharing is caring, so I clearly prefer the latter. I also highly recommend having the waiters mix you a cocktail … one that you can keep all to yourself of course! I really appreciate this unique and exclusive jewellery boutique. Here, originality and creativity come first.

Palma Salon & Spa

Being a beauty editor surely has its benefits. I have been fortunate enough to visit many spas around the world and I have to say that the beautiful and exquisite Palma Salon & Spa can compete with the best of them. FAVOURITE SPOTS L’Esprit du Vin

Sandra Skriver FACEBOOK-EDITOR

As an experienced champagne drinker (…), I’ve of course made an effort to try and find some of the best bubbly wateringholes in town. One of my favourites is l’Esprit du Vin, owned by the uncrowned champagne king Jøren Krüff, who knows a terrifyingly amount about champagne. I’ve tried some amazing champagnes in his company, including Selosse, De Sousa and Fleury. The boutique in Snarregade is now called XOTC, and frequently hosts indulgent tastings of wine-todie-for paired with oysters as you might never have had them before. Go down there and have a chat with him or any of his knowledgeable staff, but approach with caution – he talks an awful lot. Snarregade 6, 1205 Copenhagen K, esprit-du-vin.com Nimb Bar

When I have an ‘out of the office’-day, I like to put my computer in my bag, cycle to Nimb, order a nice glass of wine or a big bottle of the tasty sparkling water and then hide in the back of Nimb Bar in the very last room, where you’ll find a lot of green plants and colourful flowers as well as expensive-looking, big chairs and sofas that you can fall into and hide from the world outside - or whisper secrets to your best friend. Also, Nimb Bar itself is nothing short of an über-decadent, sacred place where time stands still. The waiters wear newly pressed uniforms, and are extremely professional. Be sure to test out their cocktail making skills too! Bernstorffsgade 5, 1557 Copenhagen V,

The habour front

I love living in Copenhagen, not least because of the fact that we’re surrounded by the sea. I wouldn’t spend summer anywhere other than in the Danish capital, and the harbour front is one of the most amazing places to hang out, eat, drink, talk or look at boats, people and everything else that happens to drift by.

The harbour front is one of the most amazing places to hang out, eat, drink, talk or look at boats, people.

John Michael Jensen isn’t ‘just’ a hot dog guy, he's the BEST hot dog guy in the entire city. John has a background as a chef as well as pastry chef, but a back injury put an end to the kind of career that entails working in a busy kitchen. That didn’t stop John though – luckily for us hot dog fans, who can now indulge ourselves in red deer or pig and ramson sausages with, for example, chipotle mustard, beetroot chutney, fennel or pickled onions made with different kinds of Mikkeller beer. You'll find John’s Hotdog Deli at Copenhagen Central Station by the Bernstorffsgade exit, across from Nimb Hotel – and often everywhere else.

Vogelkop

Very close to my home in Vesterbro is a coffee bar named Vogelkop. At first I have to admit that I was quite sceptical about yet ANOTHER café in this not exactly coffee-deficient part of town, but Ronald, the owner, definitely proved me wrong. There’s always something happening in Ronald’s bar, whether it’s a cool, intimate concert, loud release parties or poetry readings – besides nice coffee of course. Jægersborggade, Nørrebro

The street where I have lived for the past 16 years – a narrow, cobbled road that has taken a giant leap from trashy to trendy in the course of the past five years. Here you'll find small shops selling arts and crafts, specially made biscuits and caramels, (probably) the world's only restaurant serving just porridge (in different variations, but still ...), cafes and restaurants. Manfreds and Relæ are both really good restaurants and are worth checking out, however booking is essential.

I recently visited this cocktail bar in Vesterbro for the first time and immediately liked it.

Assistens Cemetery

The Coffee Collective

I’m a big fan of always having a double latté within reach, so I am a regular customer at several of the many of the coffee shops here in town. I am especially fond of The Coffee Collective in Jægersborggade. Their coffee is available all over town, however. Jægersborggade 10, 2200 København N, coffeecollective.dk

AQUARIUM

n Christmas morning in 1934, engineer Mogens Højgaard and his son walked through the forest in Charlottenlund. His son explained his dream about opening a large aquarium with fish, reptiles and plants for the public to enjoy, and Mogens Højgaard replied that “this sort of thing can be worked out.” Five years later The Danish Aquarium opened. It was an immediate success with more than 77.000 visitors in the first month. People had to be let in one group at a time and in spite of the roomy construction, the air was tight and several guests passed out. For more than 73 years, the original building in Charlottenlund was the setting for enjoyment and education for all ages. In recent years, however, the establishment was run down and a continuous demand for expansion and high-end technologies was the order of the day. In March this year, 3.000 fish and sea animals were moved from the old aquarium into their new home along with 17.000 newcomers. This spring, The Blue Planet opened its doors to the excited public. Located on the beach of Taarnby, it features 53 tanks varying in size from the small to the gigantic with a whopping total of seven million litres of water. The architecture is splendid and well worth the 

visit in its own right. Inspired by a whirling vortex and entirely surrounded by water, it is visible both from land, sea and air. In the restaurant, The Blue Planet offers a varied menu with special attention paid to fish and seafood for all ages. The restaurant is inspired by the Nordic kitchen and has a terrific view of the Øresund. The Blue Planet expects to receive 700.000 visitors annually and to be ranked among Denmark’s top five destinations. With opening hours every day, all year round – from 10 to 18 – visiting opportunities have been maximised. Every Monday is Blue Monday, where the entrance is open until 21. denblaaplanet.dk

ANIMALS

The Blue Planet is home to 20,000 fish and other aquatic animals, showcasing 450 different species. The majority of the animals have been flown in from all over the world – mostly from Asia. In a 10 metre long sensory aquarium, guests can touch ordinary aquatic animals from the sea around Denmark. The largest animals are the hammerhead sharks which can be up to 3-4 metres long.

THE TANKS CORAL REEFS One huge aquarium displays colourful fish of many species living in and by the coral. The variety of animals is separated in four different aquariums the division of which is invisible to the human eye – in the middle, the living corals; on both sides, the beautiful coral eating fish; and in the back, the reef predators such as bass, Napoleon fish (humphead wrasse), and sharks.

OCEAN TANK The largest of all the aquariums, is the ocean tank. Here, in the four million litre basin, spectacular hammerhead sharks, elegant rays, mystical moray eels and hundreds of small fish swim around. Through a 16 metre long acrylic tunnel below the water, visitors can experience the animals at very close range and from a large amphitheatre stand facing the huge (16 x 8 metre), specially designed glazing, visitors can watch the other residents such as giant

bass, barracudas and tropical mackerels.

AFRICA’S LAKES Nowhere else in the world there are so many lakes with such a variety of different species as in Africa. Five large aquariums demonstrate the diversity of life in Africa’s greatest lakes: Victoria, Tanganyika, and Malawi. These gorgeous aquariums are fitted with African granite rock. All ornamentation from sand and rock to canoes have been selected and collected in Africa by the staff at The Blue Planet. Apart from the many colourful fish, dwarf crocodiles, sump turtles and the big Nile perch can be found.

AMAZONAS The world’s longest river, the Amazon River, holds an incredible range of wildlife, which is on display in the large rain forest hall. Here, you will find free-flying birds and butterflies in a myriad of colours. The rain forest hall also has

four large aquariums which can be observed from both above and from underneath. Here, Europe’s largest colony of 3,000 piranhas plus a male and female anaconda (one of the world’s largest snakes) inhabit the area near the great waterfall. Also residing here are giga arapaimas, red tailed catfish and a cousin to the piranha, the omnivorous pacu.

THE FARO BIRD CLIFF In this specially made display, visitors get a first-hand experience of the peculiar life below the waves off the Faro Islands and the many birds that live by the sea there. The construction, which rises 15 metres into the open sky, is the home to puffins and other sea birds while siki sharks, halibut and catfish swim in the water.

OUTDOOR DISPLAY Outside The Blue Planet, there is a lake with carp and sea lions. The sea can also be seen from inside the aquarium. WHERE2GO.DK | SUMMER 2013 | 1 3 5

YOKO ONO - HALF-A-WIND SHOW Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Gl. Strandvej 13, 3050 Humlebæk 388 Ø to Humlebæk Yoko Ono is a pioneer in the artistic fields to which she has devoted her life over the years: performance art, visual art, installation, film, music, literature and activism. In the early sixties she was already known for her ground-breaking experimental, conceptual and performance works, which were shown at the time in New York and later, in Japan. The point of departure for the Louisiana’s retrospective is Yoko Ono’s classic works from the 1960s and 1970s, elucidating among other things her crucial influence on the Fluxus movement and her later conceptual and performance art. But poetry, film, photography, drawing and music – all important media for her artistic expression – are also covered. louisiana.dk

Visit the museum from your living room googleartproject.com Thanks to the inventive and friendly people at Google you can now check out the works of art at various museums around the world from your computer at home.
