here’s this thing about the Danes that always seems to surprise foreigners; our habit of having picnics in our churchyards. While eating our lunch and playing with our kids among the – or, more correctly, on top of the sadly departed, might come across as being somewhat morbid to some, it doesn’t seem to bother us, nor spoil our appetite for that matter. But to tourists, immigrants and visitors, it just seems plain odd that we apparently have absolutely no respect for the dead. But we do. We just like picnics too, and what better way to celebrate the lives of those sadly passed than to enjoy a frikadelle or a cold beer in their company? The things that might seem strange about Copenhageners are too many to mention here. My own father was born in Scotland, but has been calling himself Danish for almost 40 years, and yet, there are still things about us he will never truly understand. Be it our excessive use of flags (you’ll notice how we place them on everything, from birthday cakes to busses – even the average Danish Christmas tree has flags on it) or the fact that drinking alcohol in the public seems to be widely accepted, especially among teenagers. Andreas, the feature-editor of this magazine, married a girl from India a few years ago. She packed up everything, including her dog, to be with him in Denmark, and by the looks of it, their marriage is about as happy as they come. I might be wrong here, but I also think a part of this is because of her willingness to accept the customs of her husband and his country, now on its way to becoming hers as well. I know she finds it strange, perhaps even rude, that Danes reserve the right to return a present if the color is wrong or it wasn’t on our wish list, or that she’s more or less required to bring flowers whenever she’s invited for tea. The same goes for my father. I know he didn’t always agree with my mother’s somewhat liberal approach to discipline when it came to my sister and I, and I know it took him years to accept the fact that my sister would always carry a second, and less ”proper”, set of clothes hidden in her bag when she went out with her friends. But he’s still here, and so is Andreas’ wife (read more about her on page 84) – and one day someone will be dining on their graves, making them even more Danish.

He has worked with international top models and his clients include Danish and international fashion magazines. Besides from travelling the world during his fashion shoots, he is currently working on a book with stylist Simon Rasmussen called ‘Great Danes’ about the lovely girls of Denmark – including pictures of model Lykke May and singer Medina. What do you love the most about Copenhagen?
“That it has everything a city is supposed to have – the cafés, the shops and the lively feeling. And of course I love all the beautiful women that I work with all the time.”
ISSN 1603-0079 København, Aller Tryk A/S Oplag: 30.000
Photographer Thomas Skou spends most of his time behind a lens shooting musicians, artists, fashion, and directing music videos, while working on various book projects on the side. When he is not taking pictures, Thomas is riding his BMX in the local skate parks. He is the proud owner of 12 bikes that takes him anywhere in Copenhagen. In this issue, he has documented everyday life at Christiania his all time favorite place in Copenhagen. “I love the diversity of that place. I can spend hours walking around looking at the crooked, crazy, colorful houses and buildings. It is a place of its own and has a special feel to it like no other place in the world.”

YOU
t is always a pleasure to welcome guests to Copenhagen – especially in the summertime when we can offer you the opportunity of acting as a real Copenhagener. Be inspired and enjoy the open-air lifestyle in the city by taking a swim in the harbor baths and explore the city by taking a bicycle ride. We see the extensive use of bikes as a means of transportation and swimming in the harbor as a source of inspiration for a greener and healthier lifestyle. Like other big cities, Copenhagen is dealing with climate changes. We have chosen to set the bar high: By 2025, Copenhagen is to be the world’s first

carbon-neutral capital. This is an ambitious goal – a goal we can only achieve through close cooperation with the best scientists, and the most focused businesses, and with the participation of our citizens and visitors.
An expanding city
The message is “we can have both in Copenhagen”: We can be climatefriendly and still have a high quality of life. We can be green and still secure the economic growth that is necessary in order to provide our welfare. Copenhagen’s population is increasing. In 15 years, the city's population will have increased by 60,000,
which requires 25,000 new homes, new schools, kindergartens and an efficient infrastructure. For this reason, we are developing new areas of the city: Ørestad, with the famous concert hall designed by Jean Nouvel. Sluseholmen, the Dutch inspired canal-city, and the new North Harbor area to be developed in the city’s former industrial docks. I wish you a pleasant time in Copenhagen. If you need help or inspiration, I recommend you take a glance at the planned bicycle routes and the feature articles on architecture in Copenhagen at the website cphx.dk

You have most likely already experienced how much Copenhageners love their bicycles. But there are some who prefer to ride around in proper style. We bring you three locals and the cars they couldn't live without.
The German racer When a colleague one day rolls
up in a white 912 Porsche, the already car crazy Henrik Milling turns almost insanely jealous. For six months Henrik searches everywhere and when he one day receives a good tip from his friend Jacob, something finally happens. A Dutch couple has put their silver 912 Porsche up for sale. The car was
registered in the USA in 1968 – the same year as Henrik was born – by a guy called Clyde and has until the year 2000 been driving in California. Shortly after Henrik has arrived at the Dutch Citroën dealership, which sells the car for the couple, it is on its way to Denmark, with a very excited owner behind the wooden wheel. WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

A thirsty beauty Jaguar 240
YEAR 1968 PRICE Jens’ grandfather traded his Ford Fairlane and
threw an additional 56,000 DKK in the deal Estimated value today: 100,000 DKK ENGINE 2.4 liter, 6-cylinder in-line-engine TOP SPEED 170 km/h HORSE POWER 133 BONUS INFO During the period 1960 to 1967 this Jaguar model was called an Mk 2. Afterwards they started naming the car after their engine size, so a 2.4-liter model became a 240 It all began on May 8th 1968 in
the town Vanløse, where the car crazy grandfather, plumber Ulfeldt, of Jens Ulfeldt traded his Ford Fairlane and 56,000 kroner to a beautiful, grey Jaguar. When Jens’ grandfather died, Jens’ mother inherited the car and drove it for twenty
years. When she stopped driving in 2002, it was passed on to Jens. “I only drive it in the summer time,” Jens explains. “But then it turns into pure joy. The engine sounds good, and I find it to be a very beautiful car.” It's unnecessary to say that you easily come in contact with
people when you own a veteran Jaguar. “They just have to ask a question or two, like how far it goes to the litre and such.” The answer to that question, by the way, is about eight kilometers, so this is truly a thirsty beauty.

has always been a member of the Morris Minor Club and therefore her fortune was made, when a mechanic gave her father a tip about one being for sale 12 years ago. He made his move and an elderly gentleman drove by with the classic English car. He
could no longer attend to fixing it and wanted to get rid of the car, which he had won in a lottery in 1959. The tickets back then only cost 100 kroner, but he would not sell it for less than 25,000 kroner. “My father bought it cash down, in order for me to use it as a delivery

G New kids off the block (of wood)
Rabbit (1957) The Rabbit was one of the last animals to be designed by Kay Bojesen. Alert and always on the move, the Rabbit is a perfect addition to any playroom or office. Kay Bojesen said he never tried to create true representations of animals, but strove to give them personalities and make them pleasant to hold. Mr. Rabbit is no exception.
WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
Hippo (1955) Perhaps the most exotic addition to the family, the Hippo is unlike its brothers and sisters both functional and full of fantasy. The hippo is the most angular of Bojesen’s animal designs and, with its moving mouth, is also the only one with any real practical use – Kay Bojesen used his as a pencil holder. The Hippo is produced in oak.
Words Oliver Enné
Kay Bojesen’s animal figures have been the gold standard of iconic Scandinavian design for more than 70 years now. His mantra has always been the same: good design should feel human, warm and alive and perhaps that’s why the toys are so beloved by everyone – from kids to design connoisseurs. We took a look at the treasured toys.
Dachshund (1935) Bojesen’s Dachshund has become a true collector’s item. Playful and charming, the iconic toy shares breed with the dogs of the Danish royal family, which are known for sometimes getting a little too close to the Danish guards in Amalienborg – but that’s another story. Bojesen’s Dachshund won’t bite you. Probably because it’s produced in walnut.
Rosendahl Design Group just introduced three old friends to the Kay Bojesen family: the Dachshund (1935), the Hippo (1955) and the Rabbit (1957). The figures were last seen on the shelves in 1990, when Kay Bojesen’s store in Bredgade closed - but now they’re ready to return. The beloved figures are produced from polished oak and walnut – so aging just makes them more handsome. The animals are still created in close collaboration with Kay Bojesen’s family. Wallpaper magazine endorsed Bojesen’s cheeky monkey, and marked it out as the embodiment of Danish Design in their 2008 magazine. Kay Bojesen was born in 1886 and was apprenticed as a silversmith at Georg Jensen in 1910 - he started designing toys in 1922.

e all feel changes happening as the years pass by; our energy is just not the same. Our bodies may accomplish the same challenges as before, but recovery begins to take longer. Our sex drive goes up and down through our lives and the physical performances, the joy of learning new things, how quickly we comprehend and process information etc., well, that varies too. However, it’s a fact that the older we get, the more often we experience our energy failing us. So, is the youthful energy and enthusiasm something, which is only temporary? Are we given a carefully measured dose that unavoidably runs dry one day when we get older? Many years of genetic research seems to find the answer learning towards a no – just
WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
the opposite. Anti-ageing is a word that pops up more and more frequently in the beauty industry. Meanwhile, anti-ageing is a field of research, which is given a lot of attention these days. But can you really stop the body’s processes? Despite of everything, it’s biological factors that have the last say and the body ages whether we like it or not. That’s at least the most common belief, but it’s also on these points that genetic research has a lot of new information. PIONEERING RESEARCH FROM THE US
The farthest into our DNA you find the biological reason as to why ageing is progressing. And there, in the innermost constituents of our body, is the answer to the fountain of youth. At LifeGen Technologies in the US, are two professors from the University of Wisconsin-
Madison, Richard Weindruch and Tomas A. Prolla, studying the genetic background of the ageing process. Their goal is to prolong the time in which we can live healthy and lively. The pioneering research done by LifeGen Technologies has resulted in several patent applications, among others for the usage of what is called gene expression profiling, as a measuring method for ageing on a molecular level. In short it can be explained as follows: After decades of research, it’s been possible to identify gene clusters in the body that has a specific expression in the early years. These expressions change, the older we get. In our cells are the mitochondria, which are the “engines” that turn food into energy for the cells. With age, the number of mitochondria diminishes and efficiency is reduced. This is noticeable through decreased vitality in several areas. The identification of these gene clusters has also led to knowledge of how to turn the function and activity of the mitochondria on and off, in order to copy the gene expression of youth. Nuskin now launches the world’s first dietary supplement that handles these exact energy depots. By regular use, it affects and enhances the body’s basic energy level. The result? A more vigilant and vigorous human being – both physically and mentally.

You are the face of the new ‘BOSS Orange Man’ fragrance – why did you say yes? I’ve never been big on fragrances, but when I was approached to do BOSS Orange, I really liked the concept – the whole positive and casual vibe of it all. The fragrance is warm and individualistic, and I immediately felt it was something I would wear all the time. It was a really good fit. You always seem very optimistic. What brings you down – if anything? Then you haven’t seen me first thing in the morning. Just kidding, well, anything can bring me down really… when I get cut off on my motorbike for instance. However, I tend to keep a balanced and positive outlook because I’ve been very fortunate. But yeah, I have a temper … I’m only human. How do you deal with stressful moments? I’m quite physical. I like to be
outdoors. I ride my motorbike, and I mountain bike. I also love to be in the mountains snowboarding, if I find the time. That’s a great way for me to blow off steam. When do you have the biggest impact on women … casual or red carpet look? I think probably casual. When I’m casual, I’m comfortable and more myself. The whole red carpet concept on the other hand is very uncomfortable and contrived. Any grooming rituals? I don’t really like being done up … I keep my hair natural, and I have like one cream that I use, and now a fragrance. I’m a guys’ guy. I’m not a big groomer. However, my girl has made me a bit more groomed, and is making me use her new organic skin care line Kora. So she is starting to make a slow shift in my brain about taking care of my skin… but I haven’t thought too much about it otherwise. WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

Any makeup routines? Actually, I don’t wear a lot of makeup. If I am going out in the evening, I use a little mascara and liquid foundation. I don’t use powder anymore – only mineral powder. However, I often feel it clogs my pores. How do you stay in shape? Bicycling, my 7-year-old son and living on a ranch with four horses, four dogs and chickens. What is true beauty to you? It’s an essence. Charisma is beautiful. Women like Vanessa Redgrave and Meryl Streep are simply stunning – the way they carry themselves and the
self-confidence they exude is very inspiring. Beauty has nothing to do with age. Do you worry about getting older? I don’t and sometimes I do, but then I think about all the women I meet such as Vanessa Redgrave and Lauren Hutton – women who are women and who age gracefully, and then I’m not so concerned. What is it like belonging to the older generation of models? Despite being 44, I am still pretty busy. I am not overworked, but that actually works out perfectly with my responsibilities as a parent. Also, to my advantage, age and older models are in fashion right now. It seems like people are getting sick of looking at the same blank canvas. I mean, 16-year-olds are gorgeous, but they have no life experience and charisma … yet!

hristiania is famous for its Pusher Street where a great deal of the cannabis sold in Copenhagen is dealt from small stalls lining the short cobblestone pathway. A street that is essentially Christiania but at the same time the cause of trouble, whether it be rivaling drug gangs or as the ever thorn in the side of politicians. But more than anything, Christiania is an alternative town like nowhere else on earth – a playground for the free. Established on 85 acres of the most beautiful piece of land in Christianshavn, Copenhagen in a spirit of freedom and creativity, where all decisions are made jointly between the around 850 residents. Christiania welcomes all the people that society has no place for – but don’t think you can just buy yourself a piece of heaven: No houses can be owned and your hipster coolness will get you nowhere in the long line of people who await permission to live in one of the historic buildings and quirky houses. So do like the curious tourists and the creative class of Copenhagen: Breathe in the freedom from the constraints of outside society while taking a stroll along the lake, eating delicious organic food or seeing a gig at Operaen or the iconic Loppen where most musicians worth mentioning have played at the wooden venue before they became famous. WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
The end of Christiania is nigh
Since its establishment in 1971 the history of Christiania has been tarred with controversy and attempts to close down the commune that began as a social experiment and as a result of the lack of housing in Copenhagen. The days when the people of Christiania lived there for free, sponging off society are over and it is now one of the biggest tourist attractions in Denmark. However, the government’s attempt to normalize Christiania still seems to be inevitable. The legal clampdowns of 2004 appeared to favor the people of Christiania, but in fact the free town has just lost the right to be an independent commune: Houses along the lake are to be torn down, day fines will be issued to those who stay there without the acceptance of the state and the free town within the city is to be put under administration. Right before this edition went to print, the Supreme court ruled in favor of the Danish government, giving them the right of use of the property. But even though the battle is lost, at least for now, some Copenhageners still call Christiania their home. Over the next pages, you can meet three of them.
Tata the shoemaker, 55
Originally from Sicily, Tata has lived at Christiania since 1976. She has two children with Fakir-Henrik (the children now live outside Christiania) and she makes handmade orthopedic shoes. She never considered having a shop outside Christiania. It would complicate her life. “I have my freedom and I can work when I want to and pick my nose when I want to. I want a simple life. I am slow, and I don’t want thoughts about economy in my head. I have what I need here. I want to evolve as a person and contribute to the community.” Do you feel like an outcast? “No, not an outcast. Maybe a hippie - and definitely the black sheep of my family. We are a community of black sheep. I live on another planet compared to my family. I don’t live in fear like they do – they are afraid to die and they are afraid to live. They don’t trust nobody. Here, we have to socialize with each other and create something we believe in together.” WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

Te(i)s feels like he lives at Christiania, but he actually doesn’t. “The other day I decided I didn’t want to have the ‘i’ in my name no more. It is tiresome when people have to spell it. So now it is a bit shorter. I don’t know if I’ll be married one day.” Do you skate for Alis (the street wear- and skate brand red.)? “No, I don’t think so. We don’t have a set deal, but I wear the stuff.” How many years have you been coming here? “Since my mother told me about it. She said to be careful, because all sorts of people come here from all over the world. It’s perhaps one of the best places because of the way Christiania is with other people.” Do you feel comfortable outside Christiania? “Sometimes. But sometimes there are too many rules. It’s hard. You have to know so many things just to step outside your own door. The demands of society are strong and it’s exhausting.” Can you live off skating? “I live when I skate, that much I know. And that’s a pretty good sign. I have a desire to meet other people. Some WWW.WHERE2GO.DK

people have a fear of others. We have to be nice to them as well. Once, I had to learn to be patient, so I decided to read a book of more than 1000 pages in a foreign language. It taught me that there are other things beside myself in the world.” Do you have a favorite trick? “I have many. I just want people not to get hurt. But you have to accept that sometimes you do – get hurt. As well as being wrong.”
Tanja Bjørn Zabell the rollergirl, 29
Tanja has lived at Christiania for three years in a tiny old site hut. It’s red with yellow windows. She calls it her little castle by the highway, because it is right by the bridge on the lake where a lot of people pass every day. It has no water or toilet. “People ask how I can live under such primitive conditions, but I feel super privileged – I open my door and half a meter away is the lake. Christiania is the only place where I don’t feel like a freak. I love colorful clothing and I always roll around on my skates, and that’s not quite the standard for all the Danes living out in Normalia. Out there I am often met with raised eyebrows and sour faces. In here, there is room for diversity and it is the only place in Copenhagen where the bohemian way of life still exists to a certain degree.” What’s with the skates? “I got my first pair when I was two years old – the kind WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION

you tied to your shoes that made sparks. I travelled the world on skates and they have just become a part of me. My boyfriend and I have our own underground TV-production company and I’m the rolling reporter.” What is Christiania? “It is the last bastion of freedom. Christiania is bigger than you and bigger than me. And one of the few things Denmark can still be proud of. I try to be a good ambassador to the place, to show that it is so much more than Pusher Street. I don’t smoke hash myself, but that street is a part of Christiania – always has been and probably always will be. But Christiania is also a place where we take care of the crazy and the rest of society’s so-called trash. If Christiania is to be shut down in March, inner Copenhagen is going to be flooded with all kinds of mental cases who have no place else to go.”

Brian Nielsen the outsider, 59
Brian lived in Christiania for 32 years, but moved out two years ago. Why did you move? “It was cheaper. I save 1300 kroner a month.” Do you miss it? “I live five minutes away and I come here every day. I still have a key to my old house and I can use the garden. I have a shower now. I haven’t had that for 28 years. And I have more money to myself with what I save, so I can travel during the winter. But in two years I have only said hello to two of the people in my building. Out here everybody knows each other. You get very close to people. ” What do people not know about Christiania? “That we pay a hell of a lot in rent and consumption. I don’t know why people think we live here for free. We all pay right of use and consumption of water, heating and electricity. And we have to fix everything ourselves even though we rent.”

hen Abercrombie & Fitch opened their first Nordic flagship store on Købmagergade last year, it was one of the most talked about store openings in the history of high street shopping in Copenhagen. Not only due to Abercrombie & Fitch’s popular all-American design, but because this chain is famous – and perhaps even infamous – for bombarding both their customers and random passersby with ‘Fierce’, the store's very own signature scent. In other words, the customers smell like Abercrombie & Fitch even long after they've left the store. Jens Trillingsgaard, director of VisionAroma, explains: “They play on the senses and smelling is one of them.” VisionAroma helps Danish and foreign businesses to brand themselves through scent. This can be everything from the Optician, who wants a light citrusy scent in the store to the florist or baker, who wants the scent of fresh flowers and newly baked bread. Other stores want their very own scent developed, avoiding the risk of the store next door smelling the exact same way.
How should we smell?
Seeing that 40% of our mood is developed from the impressions we get from smelling, shouldn't the City of Copenhagen consider having its own signature scent? A scent that would greet tourists in the Metro, at Kongens Nytorv and other popular places. WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
“Perhaps a minty scent, with a touch of sea breeze,” suggests Jens Trillingsgaard. He explains that the most important thing for the scent is to be mild, since that's what most companies seek when they contact VisionAroma. “In Poland they want a sweet and more powerful scent. In Denmark we have noticed that the scent has to be light, Scandinavian and understated.” However, Mette Reissmann, who is the Social Democratic spokeswoman at the Copenhagen City Council and also a member of the Engineering and Environmental Committee, does not believe that it is an assignment for the City of Copenhagen to take on. “It is fine if a company wants to develop an oceanic scent for Copenhagen, but it will not be with taxpayers’ money.” Her colleague, Lars Berg Dueholm, who is the Liberal Party’s chairman at the Copenhagen City Council, agrees and does not believe that “there should be a sprinkler system on Strøget with a signature scent” and he has not personally experienced cases where specially designed scents have been incorporated in the local city planning. And yet, he does not reject the idea that the overlooked sense of smell could be incorporated in city planning in the future. “When thinking of the small pocket parks we are establishing, it is an obvious opportunity to integrate scent to the city planning. Even if it is only a big lawn, which can give the scent of newly cut grass,” says Lars Berg Dueholm. He does, however, not believe it to be a good idea to

establish new places in the public space, which are only meant to offer an olfactory experience. He says, “in Denmark we are climatically challenged, because the scents belong to spring and summer. This is why we cannot build a place for scents alone – it also has to have a function.”
THE TOURISTS SMELL … but they cannot smell anything. We asked the guests what they thought of the scents of Copenhagen.
The strength is in the nuances
In 2010 Wonderful Copenhagen announced that they wished to find the “sound of Copenhagen”, which could market the capital internationally. It could be the sound of a bicycle bell that should be the “sound of the city” just like the vuvuzela became the symbol of Africa during the 2010 Football World Cup. A scent of the Danish Capital, however, is not something the tourist association will focus on, says Martin Bender, director of events at Wonderful Copenhagen. Actually, he is quite satisfied with the fact that Copenhagen doesn't really have a particular smell. “We are happy that Copenhagen doesn't smell of car exhaustion or chimney smoke. That would put out the wrong signal compared to how we would like to portray our city as a sustainable, green bicycle city,” he says. This doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of olfactory oases to be found around Copenhagen. “On Langelinie you can smell the fresh ocean air of Øresund, on Nørrebrogade you can smell the ethnic restaurants and in Tivoli it is candy floss and candied apples,” WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
JURA SILVA, Brazil “Copenhagen has a fresh smell. I like to breathe the air here and it does not smell like car exhaustion. It is a cold smell.” IRINA FLEMMING (Switzerland) “It does not really smell of anything. Sometimes near the restaurants, but otherwise not. In Switzerland there are more cars; here you use your bicycles more, so there is not that smell of gasoline.” DIETER HUPPERTZ (Belgium) “Right now, there is the smell of…nothing. Maybe it has something to do with the season. I am from the country and there it smells a bit like cows… and that which cows do.” LARS ANDERSEN (Jutland, Denmark) “If we turn it around, then what should the city smell like? It's not like you notice the exhaustion from the cars either, but if it wasn't there, something would be wrong! It's like when city-dwellers move to the countryside, and complain about the smell of pig. But we already know that in the country, because that's the way it has always been.”

pends on where you are in the city. In my opinion, it is a fundamental factor that we are so close to the ocean. There are many scents of water. Often, you can smell the harbor and the fresh water from the lakes.” One of Joel Leonard Katz’s favorite places – also when it comes to smells – is found beyond the city limit: Frederiksberg Have. “Frederiksberg Have is very unique. Its composition of water, trees and flowers is very distinctive and successful,” he says and adds that Copenhagen in general has a very powerful smell of nature. “I have lived in many big cities through out my life and in my opinion, Copenhagen has many fresh scents compared to other cities. The industrial sector is limited and that is a positive thing.”
We are understated - so is our odor
says Martin Bender, though he still has trouble describing an overall scent of Copenhagen. “Copenhagen does not have just one characteristic scent, but many nuances that the city can play on and I see that as a strength that puts demands on the visitors.”
It smells like nature
The internationally recognized scent designer, the DanishAmerican Joel Leonard Katz, is an educated anthropologist and has written a thesis on “scents as cultural expressions”. Among many other things, the Danish scent expert has designed scents for the furnishings at the Michelin restaurant NOMA and perfumes for the royal family. He also agrees that Copenhagen doesn't need a signature scent. “Copenhagen smells of a lot of different things. It deWHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
Even the different city districts have their own distinctive mark when is comes to smells. Joel explains: “At Nørrebro you get a lot of different scent impressions, which reflect other cultures – for example of spices which are not traditionally used in Danish food and butchering methods that are not Danish. At Østerbro the smells are more limited. It is cleaner and people stay inside most of the time, so you don't get that many scent impressions from the people in the street.” The most “Danish” scent comes when you move towards the city center. “It is clean and the smell is understated. Compared to other cultures, the Danish culture is very underplayed in general. You do not wear brightly colored clothes, the music is not too loud and people’s tone of voice is restrained. This is especially found at the city center scent wise,” he explains and adds that the Danes do not smell so strongly of perfume. If you still want to go about “sniffling” Copenhagen, among other places, he mentions the Christiansborg riding grounds, Dyrehaven, Kongens Have and Nyhavn as places where you can get a special olfactory experience – of everything from horses and animals in heat to flowers, buildings and the smell of the canals and the harbor meeting. And it comes highly recommended, because the smelling sense is an overlooked sense if you ask the expert. “We are living in a very visually focused society, so you tend to think mostly about what you see, but the smell is almost more forceful in its influence. I would say that the smelling sense is the most important of the senses.

When summer hits Copenhagen, you'll never have to travel far to cool down. Over the next few pages, we'll take you on a tour of the city's many beaches and harbor baths. THE HARBOR BATH ON ISLANDS BRYGGE The harbor bath at Islands Brygge is the most popular in town and justly so. The big lawns around the area provide a comfortable feeling of being “at the beach”. There's a diving pool with a grand diving tower, a pool for swimming and two children's pools. Despite these facilities, the best thing about the harbor bath at Islands Brygge, is that you're right in the middle of the city.

KASTRUP SØBAD At the cadastral plot by Oresund you'll find Kastrup Søbad. With its raw woodwork Kastrup Søbad looks and feels like a Finnish bath. Like a spiral staircase, the construction is winding and opens into a diving tower. At night the structure is illuminated by lights in the woodwork, which gives you a unique bathing experience.
Amager Strandvej 301, Kastrup Opening hours (June 1 – September 15): Monday – Friday: 15-18 (June), 11-20 (July), 15-20 (Aug.-Sep.), Saturday-Sunday.: 11-18 (June), 11-20 (July-Sep.) taarnby.dk/fritid HELGOLAND BADEANSTALT Situated on Amager Strandpark, the oldest public bath in Copenhagen mirrors beautifully in Oresund. Since 1938 Helgoland has been the rallying point for water crazy Copenhageners and understandably so. The salty ocean water is a big advantage for the bathing experience. The attendant caretaker is very talkative and happily shares his anecdotes from the long history of Helgoland. If you like sand between your feet and a fresh ocean breeze, then Helgoland is the place to be.

HAVNEBADET FISKETORVET The view alone makes a swim at Havnebadet Fisketorvet, also known as the Copencabana, an unforgettable experience. From both the big pool and the children's pool, you have a fantastic view down through the harbor. The Copencabana is right next to the Fisketorvet shoppingcenter, so when you're done swimming, there are plenty of shopping and dining opportunities available to you.

SVANEMØLLE STRAND One of the most recent, artificially landscaped beaches in Copenhagen is Svanemølle Strand (beach), which is situated at Østerbro and spreads over 4,000 m2. After having transported several tons of sand from Oresund, the beach opened only a year ago and was an instant success. This also means that on the hottest of days you quickly get to lie very close to your fellow Copenhageners. On the bright side, for those who cannot keep away from the water, they also built a very beautiful wooden pier which stretches 130 meters out into the water.
AMAGER STRANDPARK The largest beach in Copenhagen is situated on Amager. With a 4.6-kilometer coastline there should be plenty of room for everyone to scamper about. A two-kilometer long island was in 2005 landscaped next to the beach. One part of the island is a park, while the other is a scenery of sand dunes, where you can hide away when sunbathing. The beach has many facilities such as showers, a kiosk, restrooms, handicap facilities and of course the public bath Helgoland. Amager Strandpark is also the place to go if you are looking for a more active trip to the beach: you can rent kayaks, play volleyball and get lessons in diving and kite surfing. 86 ASK JUNE
D “
on’t worry, you will soon become Danish”, is what my Danish friends say when they hear of my struggles in Denmark. “That is so Danish of you”, my friends from India comment if I act out of character. I know a foreigner who has the Danish flag tattooed on her back. I don’t know if that makes her Danish or just plain stupid. Anyway, here I am, 17 months into my life in Copenhagen, one foot placed gently on the threshold to the Danish way of life and the other firmly rooted in India. I am living the Danish life, adopting some ways and rejecting others.
WHERE2GO MARCH 2011 INTERNATIONAL EDITION
FOR ME, LEARNING TO TRULY TREAT EVERYONE EQUAL HAS BEEN CLOSE TO SPIRITUAL Except from men peeing in the open, India and Denmark are poles apart. I moved 6000 miles away only to be met by more men who consider trees and urinals the same thing. At Roskilde festival, I saw women pissing on the sidewalk. I hope I never get that drunk or that Danish. After much resistance, I now eat a cold Danish lunch of rye bread instead of a warm meal. Convenience won over habit. Cycling on the other hand, I started willingly. Like a true Copenhagener, I ride my bike come wind, rain or snowstorm. I still balk at the price of groceries, but the almost Danish in me finds it okay to pay more if it means that the cashier at the local supermarket makes a liveable minimum wage.
exist? It holds as much joy and mystery as executing a contractual obligation. Presents should be from the heart. I will keep my Indian norm of accepting gifts graciously and freecycling those I don’t like. Family holds the highest importance to Danes and workplaces accom-
TIME OBSESSION
I am shedding my IST (Indian Standard Time) or Indian Stretchable Time attitude. In India, an 8 PM invite might see the first guests arrive at 11 PM. Danes, on the other hand, are obsessive planners – fanatic about time. My Danish friends send out casual coffee invitations a month in advance! It is hard to commit to, I don’t know if I will feel like coffee at 15.30, 31 days later. I am learning to be punctual, but I also have to remind myself to remember to stay spontaneous. This no nonsense, pre-planning attitude also makes Danes a bit boring. Can someone explain why wish-lists for Christmas and birthday presents
modate parental commitments. Your boss won’t give you the stink eye if you come in 30 minutes late after dropping your kid off at kindergarten. But this devotion to family seems to disappear when the kids grow up. Appointments are made in advance for simple family dinners and parents are checked into retirement homes run by the state. I hope to be able to incorporate the Dan-
ish care for the young with the Indian way of caring for the old. Family members must take care of each other, this is not a job for the state.
EGALITARIANISM
Danish men and women cook, clean, babysit and share work. Gender equality is almost a reality. But women who choose to stay home as full time mothers are uncommon and I dare say, looked down upon. I wish that just like in India, being a full time parent had respectability. The most Danish trait in me, is sadly a boring one. For a country that has 8 months of bad weather, Danes discuss the weather a lot. I find it uninteresting, but I can’t stop talking about it! On the top of my must adopt list is Danish egalitarianism. Everyone is considered equal; there is mutual respect and informality in interactions irrespective of socioeconomic class. Coming from a highly stratified country, egalitarianism to me was just a theory. In India I didn’t have any friends from outside of my socioeconomic group. Here in Copenhagen, my friends are businessmen, doctors, chauffeurs, bankers, cleaners, waiters, students and people who are unemployed. Danes go to India to find spirituality. For me, learning to truly treat everyone equal has been close to spiritual or something like that. If this means being Danish, I am very proud to be næsten dansk, almost Danish.

The troubadour to end all troubadours José Gonzáles & The Gothenburg String Theory April 13 Koncerthuset, Emil Holms Kanal 20 Half-Swedish, half-Argentinian, but known all over the world. It only took José Gonzáles one record – the amazing Veneer from 2004 – to become one of the most loved modern troubadours, armed with an amazing voice and an equally amazing sounding Spanish guitar. We’re not completely sure if this makes any sense, but if you imagine James Taylor hanging out with Silvio Rodriguez in a bar in Northern Sweden, you won’t be too far off. koncerthuset.dk

Robin Gibb plays the greatest hits of The Bee Gees June 2 Forum Julius Thomsens Plads 1 We’re not sure he really needs that much of an introduction, but for those unfamiliar with modern music history, Robin Gibb used to be in a band called The Bee Gees who pretty much gave birth to disco music (well, John Travolta had some say in this as well, we suppose). Anyway, for one night only, Robin Gibb will be performing the greatest hits of The Bee Gees, so put your voice in high pitch and prepare yourself for songs such as Stayin’ Alive, You Win Again, Jive Talking and Tragedy. He might even play some songs from before the Australian band of brothers went disco. Like Craise Finton Kirk Royal Academy of Arts, for example. You can’t really dance to it, but it’s a great song nonetheless. forumcopenhagen.dk

LEGENDARY guitar licks Jeff Beck June 16 Amager Bio Øresundsvej 6 He’s one of the most talented guitarists ever to come out of Britain, and now this rock n’roll legend finally returns to Denmark. Equally famous and infamous for being far from mild-mannered (look him up on Wikipedia – there’s a whole entrance about him losing his temper all of the time). Jeff Beck has been in the middle of rock history ever since joining the legendary The Yardbirds in the mid-60’s. This year, the event will feature some of the biggest names in heavy metal and hard rock – from Judas Priest and Korn to Morbid Angel, Mayhem and Gwar. Welcome! W
e would like to welcome you to Copenhagen, a city, where you would have to ask at least 94 people if they are happy living here, before you meet just one person who hesitates in answering yes. Copenhageners are unusually happy with living in this city and to this there are many reasons. In this magazine, we would like to take you by the hand and show you all the places that make us so excited about this city. We’ll lead you to some of the city’s many beaches and harbor baths, where you can get cooled down – and we’ll show you where, on your way, to find the most delicious ice cream temptations. However, we also feel you need to experience something truly Danish. Therefore, we recommend you taste the Danish liquor, the schnapps, to which we’ll provide you with a beginner’s guide. Before you start off with the schnapps, it would, however, be a good idea to fill your stomach. Copenhagen doesn’t only have the best restaurant in the world, Noma, but also the world’s best chef. We’re quite proud of this, but Danish food is more than what just engenders Michelin stars and therefore we’ll guide you through all the aspects of the Danish kitchen. Our city is, however, much more than simply food and beverages, so we’ll take you on a tour to the most beautiful and impressive examples of Danish architecture. We’ll swing by the classic sights that any guest of Copenhagen should visit and then you can finish by shopping your way through the best stores in town. We’ll show you where to go. So welcome – we hope you’ll come to love Copenhagen just as much as we do. Further tourist information on visitcopenhagen.com or in the Visitor Centre on Vesterbrogade 4A

What’s up with those Danes?
The Danes, themselves, believe they have a really good sense of humor – judge for yourself – at least they always tend to use a lot of irony. So count to ten before you get offended by some seemingly crude remark – more often than not the Danes will just start laughing at their own ironic jokes. A lot of tourists consider the Danes to be a very subdued people – they don’t talk loudly or gesticulate wildly when they, for example, tell a funny story. But that shouldn’t hold you back – though be prepared that some prudish Danes might send you a sour look, if you laugh a bit too loudly in a restaurant. Most Copenhageners speak very good English. It will, without a doubt, be easier to speak English when communicating with them rather than taking on the tortuous Danish language. It is however, a good idea to know these few essential words: Cheers! = Skål! Thank you = Tak Yes = Ja No = Nej

e’re not sure if you can smell it walking off the plane at the airport, but trust us, you’ve surely come to the City of Fine Dining. Not only do we have the officially best restaurant in the world - NOMA, voted so last year by Restaurant magazine - and the world’s best cook in Geranium’s Rasmus Kofoed who recently won first place at the Bocuse d’Or – there’s also an abundance of fantastic restaurants all over Copenhagen. Some have Michelin-stars, some don’t, but all of them are well worth a visit. However, if you’re willing to settle for less, try one of the so-called Pølsevogne – hotdog stands on wheels – that will cure your hunger in minutes and give you the opportunity to catch up on current Danish affairs while doing so – courtesy of the always talkative hotdog sellers. In other words, Copenhagen offers the finest in dining and the best fast food in the world. And then there’s everything in between. Over the next pages, we’ll show you what to eat and drink, and most importantly, where to do so. Dinner is served. Velbekomme!

Dining like a Dane The Danish food renaissance continues to expand in all directions – some seek inspiration in times long gone, while others move forward. From the world’s best restaurant NOMA to rolling fast food stands, we sought out the best, tastiest and most interesting dining experiences our city has to offer. So start making your reservations NOW. Words by Oliver Enné
Northern soul food
Named best restaurant in 2010 by Restaurant magazine, NOMA is without a doubt the most refreshing and exiting new place for food in Europe right. With its “back to basics” concept, love for local ingredients and sense of quality, NOMA’s head chef, René Redzepi, has created a gourmet restaurant that specializes in pure Scandinavian cuisine. In other words, you won’t find any foie gras at NOMA. Reservations are hard to get, so the only way to get a table with short notice is to get on the waiting list.
14 | visitcopenhagen.com
Furthermore, NOMA is currently the only Danish restaurants with two stars in the Michelin Guide. so it’s safe to say that visit to NOMA is a dining experience you will most likely never forget. w NOMA Strandgade 93 +45 3296 3297 noma.dk Metro: Christianshavn

Relæ, Marv & Ben & Paustian restaurant relæ
The Scandinavian kitchen has bloomed during the past few years, and that is the reason why Copenhagen, despite its size, is among the gastronomic capitals of Europe. An example of this is the large number of new gourmet restaurants in the City. If you have a taste for fine dining, we suggest you visit former El Bulli and NOMA chef Christian Puglisi’s Restaurant Relæ on Nørrebro. Here, they’ll serve you a proper gourmetmenu without having you leave the place broke. In Relæ you pour your own drinks and the table is only yours for two-anda-half hours. On the other hand, the prices are lower and the quality just as good as in your ordinary gourmet restaurant. Also worth visiting is Marv & Ben: A restaurant committed to serving biodynamic dishes from its own garden, and the Utzondesigned Restaurant Paustian in the Northern Harbor.

As you might know, the hotdog stand – or the Pølsevogn as the Danes call it, is a key part of the Danish fast food culture that allows trespassers and city walkers to enjoy the guilty pleasures of the Danish culinary tradition. However, just because it is fast food it does not mean it has to be unhealthy or lack quality. The latest invention in the Pølsevogn business is the world’s first organic hotdog stand. DØP (The
DØP (The Organic Hotdog-Vendor)

Another Danish classic is roasted pork with parsley sauce – and yes, although it might sound strange, we think very highly of it here. One of the many places where you can enjoy the classic Danish dish is restaurant Sans Souci in Frederiksberg. The décor of the restaurant is old fashioned and probably looks a lot like it did when the restaurant opened back in 1902. A visit to Sans Souci allows you to experience old-fashioned cooking in intimate and rustic surroundings. The restaurant is a favorite among Copenhageners, so don’t be surprised if you find yourself feeling a bit more like a Dane when you leave than when you arrived.

EATING Ida Davidsen
Go open!
A cornerstone in the Danish lunch tradition is the concept of smørrebrød. Take a slice of rye bread, top it with everything from cold meats, shrimp and herring to bacon, egg or parsley (perhaps not all at once) and voila! – That’s smørrebrød for you. For a bite of the national treasure, try Ida Davidsen’s lunch restaurant on Store Kongensgade. It’s no wonder that the restaurant is extremely popular among both Danes and tourists. The Davidsen dynasty is a family business with decades of experience in serving the infamous open sandwich. for starters Schnapps – or the Whisky of the North as some call it - is definitely not for the weak hearted, but once you’ve had a taste, you’ll most likely want to have another – if you’re still standing, that is. We’ll show you what to drink and where to drink it.

e’ll be the first to admit that schnapps doesn’t have the best reputation among most Danes. Maybe it’s because it’s often linked to office Christmas parties and the hangovers that usually ensue, but by all means, do not let that put you off trying our national spirit. Schnapps has been around since the thirteenth century, but it was not until the eighteenth century that it became recognized as a
mean of intoxication, and not only – as had been the case for centuries – meant for medicinal purposes. According to Jens Tholstrup, author of The Book About Schnapps, schnapps and especially the more exclusive kind, is bound for a comeback. Owners of lunch restaurants all over Copenhagen speak of a growing interest, especially among younger Danes who have opened their eyes to exclusive schnapps, just as the small distilleries have expanded
Classic but contemporary Here you can taste world-class schnapps
A stone’s throw from the Danish Parliament is the lunch restaurant Slotskælderen hos Gitte Kik. For more than 100 years, this restaurant has satisfied the hunger and thirst of Members of Parliament and other guests with a taste for the traditional Danish cuisine. This was where famous, former Prime Minister Thorvald Stauning poured down his herring with spiced schnapps and it’s because of his preservation of the building that the restaurant still exists in the same way as it did in 1910 – even though the Food Standard Agency states that the ceiling is too low. Mix it up 1105 Cocktailbar
When you look at the cocktail bar 1105 from the outside, it is not apparent that behind the black outer walls behind the matt black facade lies one of the hippest cocktail bars in Scandinavia. Here you can get your drink mixed from the Danish cocktail champion, Hardeep Rehal, who among others serves the competition winning, signature drink Cucumber Yum Yum, with JubilÌums Akvavit schnapps. 1105 is old fashioned British styled with dark, striped walls, classic interior and bartenders dressed in coat-like bartender’s jackets from the 1920s. The bar has existed since 2008 and cocktails have certainly gained ground with the Copenhageners during that period. The cocktail menu is diverse and bar manager Rehal uses only Nordic produce when it comes to creating new cocktails. At the moment, three of the house cocktails have schnapps in them, but they are already experimenting with new flavor combinations. The bar manager suggests you taste a schnapps and tonic or a Bloody Mary with schnapps; that is if you want to taste some of the classics with a twist. w 1105 Cocktailbar Kristen Bernikows Gade 4 +45 3393 1105 1105.dk Metro: Kgs. Like in the old days Four steps down from Hauser Plads behind Kultorvet, you’ll find Restaurant Schønnemann, which has been serving traditional Danish smørrebrød (rye bread with toppings) and schnapps since 1877. You have to book a table seven weeks in advance,

if you expect a table during the weekend, but then you’re also allowed the pleasure of enjoying beer and schnapps at the Lunch Restaurant of the Year 2010 according to the Danish Restaurant Guide. Apart from Schønnemann’s own schnapps you can also taste rare variants from Norway, exclusive Danish produced summer schnapps and the world’s perhaps most exclusive and expensive schnapps. Unlike other places who store their bottles in the freezer, Schønnemann prefers putting them in wooden buckets behind the bar. The decor is far from aesthetic, but has an almost
cultural charm with the white tablecloths, petroleum lamps and colored windows, things that combined makes the atmosphere cozy and relaxed. If you want to try all of the house schnapps, you can begin at 11.30 and have one served every fourth minute and then you are probably done in more ways than one by five o’clock when the restaurant closes. w restaurant Schønnemann Hauser Plads 16 +45 3312 0785 restaurantschonnemann.dk Metro: Nørreport

Some you’ll recognise, some you won’t, but we’re absolutely sure that you’ll remember all of it. Let us be your personal tourist guide and remind you why you came to Copenhagen in the first place. So gather round. The tour starts now.

Nyhavn was opened in 1673 and is one of the oldest harbors in Copenhagen. In the good old days you could easily end up getting a beating by sailors and drunks, if you strayed into Nyhavn and the neighborhood kids were strongly admonished to not
walk down those parts. Back then Nyhavn was dominated by pubs, tattoo shops and women of easy virtue, but today the promenade along the canal is one of the most popular places to get a beer after work or a delicious lunch or dinner in the sun. You’ll find an abundance of restaurants
w Den lille Havfrue (The Little Mermaid)
The most famous hallmark of Denmark is the only 165 cm tall mermaid, who is so popular that we had to lend her to the World Exhibition in Shanghai last year. The beautiful bronze figure, which is created by Edvard Eriksen after a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, was presented on august 23, 1913 and every year since we have celebrated the little lady’s birthday on Langelinie. Despite her graceful defenselessness, she has had to endure a lot through the years: She has been covered in paint and her head and arm has been cut off several times and she has even been pushed into the harbor. Further down Langelinie, you can see Den lille Havfrue’s younger sister, created by Bjørn Nørgaard in 2006. Den lille Havfrue Langelinie S-train: Østerport

Copenhagen’s adventurous amusement park was founded by Georg Carstensen and opened its gates for the first time in 1843. On the last day of the first season, Hans Christian Andersen visited the park and this was where he found inspiration for his description of the emperor’s garden in the fairy tale “Nattergalen” (The Nightingale). Every year Tivoli has around 4 million visitors: a mix of Copenhageners, tourists, season ticket holders and other people of all ages. The old park offers everything from rides to both younger and older kids to all kinds of restaurants, beautiful footpaths for romantic walks, Friday night rock, a variety of concerts in the famous concert hall and last but not least the most well-kept flowers in all of Copenhagen. It’s also in Tivoli that you’ll receive excellent service, which is often too seldom, from the well-dressed Tivoli guards. In Denmark we love our royal family. The four palaces were built between 1750 and 1760 by four noblemen, but after a fire in the former royal residence Christiansborg in 1794, Amalienborg became the new royal residence, which today houses the most noble of royalties: Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince Consort live in Christian IX’s Palæ, while the Crown Prince and Crown Princess reside in
the newly restored Frederik VIII’s Palæ. Christian VII’s Palæ is used as a guest– and representation mansion and is the only mansion that, in periods, is open to the public. Amalienborg Visit ses.dk for further information. Free entrance with cOPENhagen CARD Metro: Kgs. Nytorv

The Danish National Gallery exhibits Danish and foreign pictorial art – both older, modern and contemporary art and you can experience everything from classic oil paintings to super modern video installations. The museum’s collection holds 9,000 pieces and the largest part of the older collection is from the art chambers of the Danish kings. The old building from 1896 is connected to the new extension from 1998, which has a glass covered sculptural street. You can also enjoy a delicious dining experience at the museum café, which has a beautiful view of Østre Anlæg.

w rosenborg Castle in Kongens Have The small castle in the middle of the city was built when the famous King Christian IV resided in Frederiksborg Slot 35 km outside of town and needed accommodations in the city. He therefore let the small house be built in the new-laid garden in the years 1606-1607. It was later used as a royal residence until 1710, where Frederik IV let the castle create the framework for the royal collections. It is also here that the highly guarded crown jewels are to be found along with well-preserved interior, portraits and art. Kongens Have opened for the public in the 1770s and is today one of the most popular places for the Copenhageners to relax during lunch break, eat lunch, hold a birthday party in the open or even have a pétanque tournament. Between Christiansborg and Det Kongelige Bibliotek (The Royal Danish Library) and a stone’s throw from the Ministry of Finance is the prettiest, most serene garden with a well-kept flowerbed and large trees. Bibliotekshaven (Library Garden) as it’s called colloquially, was landscaped in 1920 on King Christian IV’s former naval port, Tøjhushavnen, and that’s what the small lake in the middle of the garden is a memorial of. The free town, which houses around a thousand residents, was founded in 1971, when hippies and squatters moved into Bådsmandsstrædes Kaserne (barracks) to create a new society, and “the dream of a life in freedom and the idea of a citizen run city exists” – as it says on the free town website. Even though Christiania is primarily known for Pusher Street and an awful lot of cannabis, the free town (or just Staden) actually does work as a society within society. Concert Hall
If anyone claims to have had an unsatisfactory experience in the concert hall of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), surely the physical environment is not to blame. The concert hall, designed by the French star architect Jean Nouvel, took six years to build and ended up costing 250 percent more than expected – a grand
total of 1,4 billion DKK thus making it one of the most expensive concert halls in the world. But the result is breathtaking. From the outside, the building is impressive but on the inside the concert hall is truly dizzying. Inspired by amphitheaters, the room features 1,800 seats, but despite the sheer volume (28,000 m3) the concert hall seems intimate. In 2010 the magazine Wallpaper awarded the concert hall the prize for ‘Best new public building’ in their annual design awards. Metro: DR-Byen

Danish Library The Royal Danish Library holds a copy of nearly all known printed works in Danish. A collection that impressive deserves impressive surroundings – and it has just that. Nicknamed ‘The Black Diamond’ the 60 million dollar building, covered in glass and black granite, is astonishing whether you approach it from land or from the harbor. The dark exterior is in stark contrast to the bright atrium inside, which is lit by windows in the ceiling and bounded by wavy balconies. Besides 32 million books and other publications the diamond-shaped building houses The National Museum of Photography and the Queen’s Hall for concerts. The Black Diamond opened its doors in 1999 and was designed by the Danish architectures Schmidt Hammer Lassen, who are currently working on a new campus for the City of Westminster College in London and the Queen Mother Library for the University of Aberdeen. gas station
The great Danish designer Arne Jacobsen may be most well-known for his furniture design – he is the man behind chairs like the Ant chair, the Egg chair and the 7 Series – but as an architect Jacobsen was also one of the front-runners of architectural functionalism. Among his works are The National Bank of Denmark, St Catherine’s College in Oxford and… a gas station. In 1938 Arne Jacobsen built a gas station
for the Texaco company – without badmouthing the architectural qualities of a standard gas station it may be the most beautiful gas station in Denmark. The elliptical roof – a precursor of Jacobsen’s famed Ant chair – earned the building the nickname “the mushroom”. Unfortunately the gas station in Charlottenlund remained one of its kind. The building, however, is listed and can be enjoyed in the future, even when gas stations have been made superfluous by electrical and/or flying cars. S-train: Charlottenlund

w Bella Sky Comwell If you suffer from acrophobia, Bella Sky probably isn’t the best place to live. However, if you appreciate marvelous architecture the new hotel in Ørestaden is indeed worth a visit. The architectural vision behind the buildings is two shy bodies being close but leaning away from each other. The two 77 meter high towers incline 15 degrees, amounting to a staggering 20 meters slope difference between the ground and top floor. By comparison the Leaning Tower of Pisa only leans at an angle of less than 4 degrees. The Bella Sky is the first non-steel building in the world to lean that much to the side and the structure is bolted into the ground by 12 meter long steel spears. The Bella Sky hotel, when finished in May 2011, will be the largest hotel in Scandinavia with 23 floors, 814 rooms, 30 conference rooms, 3 restaurants and 2 bars – one of the those is on the 23rd floor and will no doubt make alcohol unnecessary due to the truly dizzying view. w The Elephant
House, Copenhagen ZOO
The inhabitants of one of Copenhagen’s finest pieces of architecture probably don’t appreciate the beauty of the building that much. They care more about regular access to mud and peanuts – since they are elephants. In 1999 Copenhagen ZOO decided to renew the garden’s elephant house, both for the sake of the animals and for the 1.2 million visitors a year. After visiting the British Museum in London, where Norman Foster had just completed the impressive project of covering the
central Great Court with glass transforming it into a large hall, Copenhagen ZOO’s managing director took an interest in the acclaimed British architect. Foster, whose work includes the restoration of the Reichstag in Berlin and the Hearst Tower in New York, accepted the challenge and presented the elephants’ new home in 2008. The house is partially submerged in the ground to minimize the building’s impact in the landscape. It has two large glass domes in the roof to let in natural light, while the barriers between the animals and visitors are discreet – however, the elephant house is well worth a visit even if you don’t care for trunked animals. w The Opera House In 1999 the shipping magnate Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller decided to give the nation a present. Instead of opting for say flowers or a nice bottle of wine, the business tycoon splashed out 2.5 billion DKK (close to 350 million Euros) to build Copenhagen a new opera house. The project was surrounded by some controversy as Mc-Kinney Møller made it very clear that the opera house was a gift, not a gift voucher and insisted on personally assessing every detail of the building designed by the famous Henning Larsen. Most can agree though that the building – covered in limestone and majestically surrounded by water – is astonishing. The inside is no less amazing with a foyer floor in Sicilian marble, lamps designed by Olafur Eliasson and four bronze reliefs created by painter and sculptor Per Kirkeby. Bus: Harbour bus
