I love summer! It seemed like it took forever to get here this year, but it finally arrived! There are so many things to do, and I have been diligently making my list. For many who are downsizing their summer vacations or are thinking of not doing anything at all, this is great news! With Pennsylvania being about 300 miles east to west and 170 miles north to south, a tank of gas can get you pretty much anywhere you’d like to go within its borders. I am hard-pressed to think of anything that you cannot do in Pennsylvania. There are beautiful beaches, lakes, parks and gardens. Hiking and biking trails are the finest. History will be big this year, honoring the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Amusement parks let you be a kid again. Golf, shop, and antique to your heart’s content. Plan a day trip to Downtown, PA, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind shops with unique items. Along with this issue, check out whereandwhen.com for additional information and videos. Use the handy Itinerary Planner, and you’ll always be ready to impress your friends with something to do! Or, use the Preferred Destinations and have most of the planning done for you! My problem is, my list keeps getting longer and longer, and my time keeps getting shorter and shorter! I hope you have the same problem; it’s a good problem to have! Happy summer!

Dictionary.com defines a “foodie” as a person keenly interested in food, especially in eating or cooking. In that case, most of us are foodies. Who doesn’t love to eat good food? Lucky for me, as a Pennsylvanian, I’ve always had access to delicious food from many different ethnic cultures. Over the winter I started asking our Facebook followers to share their PA Foodie Favorites -- where they go to get the best slice of pizza or juiciest steak. Because we truly have the best Facebook followers, the response was amazing. Since they were so willing to share, I thought I’d share some of their ‘faves’ with you.

s the Europeans began their westward migration in the 18th century, Cook Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania was the fertile hunting grounds of the Seneca Nation of the Iroquois. Facing the prospect of losing their precious land to the ever-encroaching British, the Iroquois took up arms with the French during the French and Indian War. On June 11 and 12, Cook Forest will come alive again with the sounds of cannon and musket fire for the annual French & Indian War Encampment. For two days, re-enactors will demonstrate cooking and primitive skills, including 18th-century surgical techniques, bow making, blacksmithing, flint knapping and sheep shearing. The event, sponsored by the Sawmill Center for the Arts, features artists and craftsmen displaying and demonstrating French & Indian War era art.

Tactical engagements will take place along Black Bear Trail, where 150 skilled British, Colonial, French and Native American re-enactors bring the “Peril in the Forest to life. What Do You Have Planned For Dad This Father's Day?

46 - W&W Summer 2011

hy is it that dads W seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to their holiday? Father’s Day gifts are notorious for being predictable, boring or downright tacky. If you really want to make dad’s day special, skip the gadgets and spend the day with him at the American Helicopter Museum in West Chester. The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center is the nation’s premier museum devoted entirely to helicopters. Among the collection are more than 35 aircraft, from the small civilian Benson Gyro-Copter to the huge military V-22 Osprey. The museum also houses more than 12,000 historic documents, photos and films that are available to the public. The museum hosts several events throughout the year, including RotorFest, the world’s largest all-helicopter air show. This year’s event takes place on September 24 - 25.

On Father’s Day, June 19th, the American Helicopter comes alive with FatherFest, a one-day celebration of the “big boy toys” dads love. Hot rods, antique and classic cars, motorcycles, food and music will make this Father’s Day one that he won’t soon forget. Helicopter rides will also be offered during the festivities. If you’re set on getting him those glow-in-the-dark boxer shorts, go ahead, but take him to FatherFest for a great time for the entire family! ~W&W If You Go: What: FatherFest Date: June 19, 2011 Time: 11 am to 3 pm Where: American Helicopter Museum 1220 American Blvd., West Chester, PA 19380 Phone: 610-436-9600 Website: www.helicoptermuseum. org
