PENNSYLVANIA'S TRAVEL GUIDE
Anew, fresh, green, bloom, and anticipation - those are words that are evoked when I think of spring. Nature is bursting with the anticipation of blooms that will embellish and perfume our landscape for months. I’ve always considered myself fortunate to be allergy free. I love the smell of spring; fresh grass, fragrant dogwoods and Pennsylvania’s state flower, the mountain laurel. If I smell mountain laurel, it usually means that I’m hiking in one of PA’s state parks. I’m a firm believer that time spent outdoors is not only beneficial to your physical health, but a balm to the soul. Among the pages of our spring issue you will discover hundreds of things to do, both indoors and out. I’m certain you will find many ways to enjoy spring in Pennsylvania.

East:
This past fall I enrolled in a naturalist course that focuses on the ecosystems in Pennsylvania. Never before had I realized the abundance and diversity of the animals, plants, and habitats found in the commonwealth. Every county has access to unique opportunities to help people connect with their surroundings in nature. The locations mentioned in this article will either unite you with things to do in Pennsylvania ecosystems or educate you about the opportunities to give back to the local environment through a variety of preservation and sustainable business practices. As both a traveler and a lover of nature, I find it encouraging to study the ways in which Pennsylvania tourism is integrating environmental protection initiatives in order to protect its resources for travelers for years to come. These measures will enable us all to enjoy the serenity of our world-class fly fishing streams, the variant shale rock formations found along our hiking trails, the scent of our native pine and maple trees, and the rebirth of industrial towns and buildings into ecotourism destinations.
Ledges Hotel is one of the most beautiful adaptive reuse projects in Pennsylvania. Formerly the home of the O’Connor Glass Factory in Hawley, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, it was redesigned into a hotel and maintains the hand-cut bluestone exterior of the original building. Guest rooms are furnished in such a way as to bring the outside in, and the hotel uses local artisans’ work to decorate the interior spaces. Guests will enjoy toiletry products made from all-natural and organic ingredients during their stay (www. ledgeshotel.com). If you are in town from Friday to Sunday, April 24 to 26, make sure to visit Hawley Earthfest on Main Avenue in downtown Hawley for crafts, speakers, a farmers market, and a festival (www.hawleyearthfest.com). The hotel is part of the Green Lodging Partnership with the Delaware Highlands Conservancy, also based out of Hawley. Being a member of this partnership means that with every reservation, guests are contributing directly the conservancy (www.delawarehighlands.org). Conservancy efforts support protecting land, water, and outdoor recreation in the Upper Delaware River region. Fauchere – Milford, Harrington House Bed & Breakfast – Milford, the James Manning House Bed & Breakfast – Bethany, Roebling Inn on the Delaware – Lackawaxen, Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort - Shawnee on Delaware, Inn at Starlight Lake – Starlight, The Lodge at Woodloch – Hawley, The Settlers Inn – Hawley, The Starlight Lodge – Starlight, and Woodloch Pines Resort – Hawley. Just 40 minutes from the hotel is Grey Towers, the former residence of Gifford Pinchot, who is known as the father of American conservation and was a twotime governor of Pennsylvania. The Grey Towers Heritage Association in Milford offers programs in conservation, the arts, recreation, and more. Built in 1886 by Pinchot’s parents, James and Mary Pinchot, the summer retreat was often filled with friends, family, and supporters of Pinchot’s ideals to protect natural resources from industrialization. Grey Towers Heritage Association continues to preserve the estate in order to support the legacy of this conservation pioneer and first chief of the U.S. Forest Service (www.greytowers.org).

West: Pittsburgh has become the heart of green building innovation in the last decade, a far cry from its industrial steel roots. Consol Energy Center, home of the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team, was the first National Hockey League arena to achieve LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This certification is based on the number of points received from the Green Building Certification Institute on green building techniques and implementations (www.consolenergycenter.com). A 15-minute walk from the center is Fairmont Hotel, which has also achieved the LEED Gold Certification. Guests can tour the green building infrastructure, explore the 26,000 artifacts found during construction, and partake of local, organic, fair trade, and sustainable food on site. Guests may also find comfort in the fact that the Fairmont Pittsburgh has gone above and beyond in energy and water conservation as well as giving back to the local community (www.fairmont.com/pittsburgh).
From the hotel, visitors may hop on a bike for a short 20-minute ride to the Great Allegheny Passage trailhead. The trail is built mostly on abandoned rail beds and runs 150 miles from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Md. Biking and hiking the trail are the most popular activities, but some sections are open to equestrians (www.atatrail.org).
North: The Hyner View Trail Challenge is a trail hike and run for those who are up for a mental and physical challenge. At 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, runners will begin the 50K challenge, and at 9 a.m. the 25K challenge will begin. Registration is open through Wednesday, March 25, or to the first 1,200 runners, whichever comes first. The challenge includes three major climbs, three major descents, and more than 4,300 feet in elevation gain, featuring vistas, stream crossings, and single-track paths (www.hikerun.com). Part of the Hyner View Trail Challenge cuts across the vast West Branch Forest near Lock Haven. The forest has pristine views across 40 miles of mountains from the northwest and southeast and includes a network of old logging roads and trails. Forest streams that wind their way to the Susquehanna River contain Class A wild trout. Intended to serve as a research and demonstration site for sustainable forestry, this protected forest was purchased by the Nature Conservancy to bridge the state-managed Sproul State Forest and Bucktail State Park Natural Area, connecting a total of 18,000 preserved acres (www.nature.org/pennsylvania).

After completing the challenge or your own hike through the West Branch Forest, drive one hour south to stay at the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle State Park in Howard. This inn has also received the LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Some of the green perks include on-site renewable energy, native landscaping, and a rainwater harvesting system. The large windows, decks, patios, and private balconies allow guests to stay connected with nature throughout their stay (www.natureinn atbaldeagle.com).
South: The Appalachian Trail runs from Georgia to Maine, and halfway in between lies the town of Boiling Springs, Pa. The information desk at the Boiling Springs Appalachian Trail Information Center provides information for day hikers, thru-hikers, and section hikers. Individuals will find maps and merchandise to support the Appalachian Trail’s initiative to protect the trail so it can be enjoyed for many years to come. In the warmer months, trail club volunteers may be found on the front porch of the Boiling Springs office to encourage hikers along their journey (www.appalachian trail.org). Take a moment outside in any one of Pennsylvania’s unique habitats and you’ll find abundant opportunities to climb a trail, bike on a former industrial site, lay your head on the grass, and look up into the dark sky with glittery stars all around. Pennsylvania’s recreation is eco-rich and unique, and Where & When, Pennsylvania’s Travel Guide welcomes you to share your favorite escapes in the Pennsylvania outdoors online. South Mountain Partnership works in coordination with state agencies as well as the Appalachian Trail to protect the quality of life in the region of Franklin and Cumberland counties. The partnership sponsors many recreational opportunities in the region, including an extensive geotrail and a speaker series (www.southmountain partnership.org). While you’re in the Boiling Springs area, you can immerse yourself in nature at the Allenberry Resort and Playhouse. The comfortable accommodations keep guests linked to the alluring wildlife and flora of the region. Book your stay in coordination with the resort’s Fly Fishing School with nationally recognized guides Tom Baltz and Eric Stroup (www.allenberry.com).

By Rick Hiduk Nestled in the rolling hills of Sunbury is the family-friendly Owens Farm, which offers numerous hands-on learning activities and experiences for adults and children. While sheep have become a primary focus for educational opportunities, visitors to the Owens Farm will also see humanely raised pigs, beef cattle, chickens, turkeys, horses, and honey bees. “The sheep is such a small animal that the kids can really get their hands on them and really learn things ... not just out of a book,” said Caroline Owens, referring to the farmstead as a living classroom. “Sustainable agriculture is going through a major shift, and the kids are the ones who are going to be carrying on that good work into the next generation.”

The 112-acre Northumberland County spread is actually the second farm run by Caroline and her husband, David, and their three children. They started with 13 acres in New Hampshire as an endeavor in living off the land without the use of chemicals and growth stimulants and soon attracted the attention of their neighbors, who asked them if they could raise and sell some extra animals. “People are interested in their food and where it comes from,” David told a news reporter in a 2009 interview. “There has been a lot of talk in the press about what is actually in our food and if it is really good for us.” Caroline serves as the education coordinator for hands-on activities at the Owens Farm, which moved to Sunbury in July 2008. She holds degrees in animal science and agricultural education from Cornell and Boston universities and has worked as a vocational agriculture teacher, as well as in marketing and equestrian travel. Members of the Owens family are strong proponents of raising animals in a natural setting. Portable fencing and shelters allow them to move a variety of livestock from fields to forest to avoid overgrazing

The Owens Farm near Sunbury offers more than 100 acres of rolling forest and pastures for families to explore while gaining hands-on experience with a variety of livestock and produce. and to promote the health and happiness of their animals. Pigs, cows, and horses often share the same open spaces and live in harmony with each other. Some events have become seasonal staples at the Owens Farm, while other activities, such as “hayfield polo and farm-fresh dinner parties, are offered more occasionally. Registered patrons are kept abreast of special events via email, with a complete listing also available at www.owens farm.com, an impressive website that highlights Caroline’s marketing skills. Popular annual events start in February of each year with Lambing Slumber Parties, which continue into March. Participants age 7 and older arrive on a Friday afternoon and get a crash course in lamb birthing and other aspects of livestock farming. One adult is required to accompany every three children enrolled. Participants at a slumber party event may enjoy a sunset walk prior to a healthy supper, which is followed by a barn check, a discussion on lambing, and an evening movie. A midnight barn check is optional. After rising with the sun and taking care of morning chores, families enjoy a pancake
breakfast before departing. Group sizes are limited, and participants sleep in a carpeted, heated area that overlooks the lambing area. Why so close to the animals? Because February to March is prime birthing season for sheep, and participants may be woken by the clatter below as new lambs are coming into the world. For a more in-depth experience, adults and teens can take part in a Lambing Clinic, which will be held on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Veterinarian Dr. Jackie Rapp will conduct an informative morning session to be followed by demonstrations in the sheep barn and lambing area related to the birthing season. Some 100 ewes deliver lambs between February and March, offering ample opportunities for observation. Boys and girls ages 7 to 12 are invited back to the Owens Farm in the summer to participate in Sheep Camp for Kids. Daily in-

struction in sheep care is offered, as well as games like hide-and-go-sheep and lamb races. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Each child is partnered with a sheep for a week to learn the science and psychology of sheep care and how wool is prepared from a sheered fleece. As cute and cuddly as their livestock may be, the Owenses make no pretense about the fact that many of the animals raised on the farm end up on the dinner table. “We do a session on meats. They learn where the cuts come from and why lamb is so popular worldwide,” Caroline related. “We never lie to them. We don’t sugarcoat it.” Reservations and deposits are required

for all activities, and children under 12 are admitted for free to events more geared toward adults and teens. Activities to be conducted over the next few months include Lambing Slumber Parties on Fridays and Saturdays, March 6 and 7 and 27 and 28; the aforementioned Lambing Clinic; Pastured Pork Day on Saturday, April 18; and Sheep Camp for Kids on Mondays to Fridays, June 15 to 19, June 29 to July 3, and July 13 to 17. The Owens Farm also offers an Adopt-aSheep program. Ongoing Guided Farm Tours are conducted on Wednesdays through Saturdays as available and run from one to two hours depending on size of group and age range. The open, 500-foot sleeping area utilized for the Lambing Slumber Parties will be available for lodging, with bunks to accommodate up to six guests, beginning Wednesday, April 1, and continuing through Sunday, Nov. 1. A self-catering kitchen and full bath are situated on the first floor. Early registration is encouraged for all activities, and regular customers are given priority. There is also a full range of farm products for sale on site, and orders can be made in advance through the website. For more information, readers may call 570-286-5309.

Perfecting the Craft in Southcentral PA
Wine trails have become a popular weekend destination in Pennsylvania. Lately, though, it’s a beverage of a different kind that’s getting a lot of attention. Craft beer production in the state and particularly southcentral Pennsylvania is on the rise. And why not? With a growing number of consumers who put a great deal of emphasis on buying local products, it just makes sense. Still, despite the increase in popularity, terms like microbrewery, craft

beer and brewpub can be a bit confusing to the novice. According to the Brewers Association a microbrewery is a brewery that produces fewer than 15,000 barrels of beer per year with 75 percent or more of its beer sold off-site. Like the microbrewery, a craft brewery is usually a smaller independent brewer, but more importantly it uses traditional ingredients, like malted barley. Innovative ingredients are often added to achieve a distinctive flavor. More often than not, craft beer is produced in a microbrewery. Along with many other cultural influences, German immigrants brought their love of beer to Pennsylvania. In fact, Pennsylvania had more breweries than any other state in the nation before Prohibition. We can’t discuss

BLAZING THE CRAFT BREW TRAIL In 1987, Ed and Carol Stoudt opened Stoudts Brewing Company in Adamstown when there were few craft brewers in Pennsylvania. Carol was the first woman to open a brewery since Prohibition. Pioneers in the craft beer movement, the Stoudts don’t do anything cookie-cutter. Wacker was the last brewery standing in a long line of breweries in the city. When the Lancaster Brewing Company (LBC, originally called Lancaster Malt Brewing) opened for business on the corner of Walnut and Plum streets in 1995, it ended the 39year drought in Lancaster’s brewing industry that was created when the Wacker Brewery closed. Whether you’re sampling an LBC Boss Hog Double IPA or feasting on a tasty Po Boy sandwich, or both, guests can see the brewery operation from the bar and restaurant. The Lancaster Brewing Company prides itself on artisan quality that creates consistently great beer. Those brews include eight year-round beers and about a dozen limited-release and seasonal beers. LBC has locations in Lancaster and Harrisburg.

In 2014, Bryan Kepner brought the Wacker Brewing name back to life. Kepner’s great-grandfather worked for Wacker before it closed. Today, the brewery on Grant Street produces two traditional Germanstyle beers, but it has plans to add seasonal and English-style beers in the future.
