For the Love of Fall
Fall is a special time of year in Pennsylvania. Outdoor activities are seldom hampered by temperatures that are either too hot or too cold. In fact, after another steamy summer, I have a little extra pep in my step! I can't get enough of the comfortably warm days and crisp, cool nights. And, don't get me started on campfires. Let's just say it doesn't get any better than friends and family around a campfire on a chilly autumn night. This issue celebrates all there is to love about fall in Pennsylvania. From harvest festivals and county fairs to fall foliage and football, no place does it better than PA! We put together lots of ideas to get you started planning your fall getaway in Pennsylvania. For more information on things to do anytime of year, visit whereandwhen.com and follow whereandwhenPA on social media. CHEERS TO FALL!

Route 6 Road T Two Spectacular Structures Conn
By Morgan Christopher
Tunkhannock Viaduct photo by Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau
T
here is an interesting thing that visitors do not realize about Pennsylvania Route 6 until they have explored the highway. Travel the road connecting the counties of the state’s northern tier, and you will discover two colossal structures: Wyoming County’s Tunkhannock Viaduct, often referred to as an “engineering wonder of the world,” and McKean County’s Kinzua Skywalk (formerly the Kinzua Viaduct). Constructed as infrastructure that allowed for the advancement of transportation and industrialization during the Industrial Revolution, today, both structures offer breathtaking scenery for visitors. Allow these two structures to serve as “bookends” as you put together a unique trip across the heart of Pennsylvania’s northern tier. Going east to west along the route, consider these stops when planning a fall foliage tour of Pennsylvania’s northern tier.
1
Tunkhannock Viaduct - Named for the creek it crosses in the town of Nicholson, this century-old structure was built to shorten the train route between the Great Lakes and New York City. A visitors area offers fantastic views for photos and sightseeing. The restored Nicholson Train Station is set to open in the coming months (check out the website for details) as an interpretive center sharing the story of the construction and legacy of the viaduct.
2
Quilted Corners of Wyalusing - Along Route 6, you will see large, brightly painted quilt squares adorning structures that pay tribute to the art of quilt making that generations of farm families continue to practice. The stories of the squares can be enjoyed while touring historic barns, orchards,

wineries, and other businesses listening to the OnCell Audio Tour on your drive. Stop by the Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce on Main Street to pick up the brochure.
3
Marie Antoinette Lookout/ French Azilum - One of the great panoramic views along Route 6 can be enjoyed from the overlook between Wyalusing and Towanda. This breathtaking view of the Susquehanna River valley is a “must see” for leaf peepers. From the lookout, take in the farmlands of the French Azilum, the historic site where a community was planned for gentry fleeing the French Revolution. Enjoy the overlook named for the most famous resident who never arrived, then drive down to the site to learn more about this unique chapter of Pennsylvania history.

5
Pennsylvania Grand Canyon/Pine Creek Rail Trail - Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks on opposite sides of Pine Creek Gorge (aka the PA Grand Canyon) offer incredible foliage viewing points of the 47-mile-long glacially carved canyon. The vast abundance of hardwoods and evergreens offer stunning shades Pine Creek Gorge photo by Tim McBride of fall color. The Pine Creek Trail running along the canyon floor provides a view from the “bottom up” that can be enjoyed from an immersive ride through the foliage aboard the popular Ole Covered Wagon Tour.
5
Pennsylvania Lumber Museum - Viewing fall foliage is a delight, but at the lumber museum, you can also learn about the trees you see! This state museum offers interactive displays and interpretive exhibits chronicling the story of Pennsylvania’s lumber history. The on-site lumber camp, sawmill, and Shay Locomotive displays offer a chance to spend time on the grounds surrounded by the lush foliage of Potter County.

Austin Dam Memorial Park
Austin Dam Memorial Park - In September 1911, a flood destroyed the town of Austin and is remembered as the sixthworst dam failure in U.S. history. Today, a 76-acre park surrounds the ruins and offers a beautiful spot for hiking, biking, camping, and recreation. Fall offers fantastic foliage displays and a great place to connect with nature.
7
Kinzua Skywalk – The incredible skywalk which offers breathtaking views in and around Mt. Jewett in McKean County, was constructed on six of the historic Kinzua Viaduct towers that survived the tornado of 2003. Once the highest and longest railroad viaduct in the world, the structure has been revitalized as a popular attraction extending 624 feet into the Kinzua Gorge, offering visitors panoramic views. At a stunning height of 225 feet above the valley, the partial glass overlook gives visitors the chance Kinzua Bridge Skywalk photo by Allegheny to “walk the tracks across the sky.” National Forest Visitors Bureau
Connecting all these suggested stops along the heart of Route 6 between Wyoming and McKean Counties are seasonal businesses like orchards, roadside stands, and cider mills, as well as farmers markets and wineries/microbreweries that offer fall favorites. Pick up a pumpkin or two on your journey, enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, and discover the magic of autumn along Pennsylvania’s beautiful northern tier on Route 6.

izza has become a staple of the American lifestyle, because of its relatively inexpensive ingredients and seemingly simple preparation. That's just part of why it was so appealing to the coal mining families of northeastern Pennsylvania when its mass production in corner bars and mom-and-pop restaurants started in the 1920s. In Old Forge, at the southwest corner of Lackawanna County, a unique version of pizza has outlived its creators and has become as much a cultural icon as it is a popular food item.

Delores Revello works the dough in the family restaurant she and her husband started in 1967.
Historians differ as to who started making rectangular trays of pizza with the unique crust that is crispy on the bottom and soft in the middle. But owners and managers of more than a dozen pizza shops in Old Forge credit Philomena Ghigiarelli, who made trays – not pies – and served cuts – not slices – to the coal miners who participated in card games run by her husband, Erminio, as early as 1926. The concept spread like wildfire up and down the coal-rich valleys, with classic red and double-crusted white remaining the most popular varieties. While one might think that Old Forge pizza could be easily duplicated, local consensus dictates that it simply isn't the same when served outside of Old Forge, the self-proclaimed Pizza Capital of the World. "There are a lot of pizza places in Scranton, but this is better," said Scranton resident Dorothy Mancia, who has been taking her now-adult daughter, Chrissy Volovitch, to Revello's Pizza at 502 S. Main Street for decades. "There's no pizza like Old Forge Pizza."

Revello's manager Mario Monocelli puts together a classic red Old Forge pizza before it goes into the oven.
Revello's Café & Pizza opened in 1967, serving a wide variety of Italian favorites and some sur-prises reflecting the diverse ethnicity of Old Forge.
"I don't know if it's the cheese they use or the crust," Volovitch pondered. "The dough is made fresh every morning," Revello's server Jeannie Cusumano explained. "I think starting off with a good foundation is what makes the difference." Joseph and Delores Revello opened the restaurant's doors in 1967, and they have served Old Forge Pizza from the start. Their son, Patrick Revello, currently runs the business with a dedicated staff that he considers family. He credits their pizza
recipe to Anna Bianco, a long-time employee of his parents. "Family" would almost seem to be an overused term in Old Forge, but its legitimacy can't be denied as one goes from one pizza shop to the next. "We consider a lot of customers to be our extended family," said Arcaro and Genell co-owner Angelo Genell. His manager, Amanda Krappa, who started working at the restaurant 18 years ago, refers to Genell as her "work dad." Genell's parents opened the business at 443 S. Main St. in 1962, and it has grown from a bar to a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, a takeout deli, a large banquet room, and a famous bocce ball court on the side of the building. The shop owners are adamant that there is plenty of room for them and their pizza-making counterparts. They frequent each other's establishments. According to Anthony Salerno Jr., who manages Salerno's Cafe at 139 Moosic Road, it's not uncommon to help each other get through supply

shortages and even with deliveries. "There's no competition among any of us really," Salerno maintained. "It's a small town. We all know each other." Started nearly 100 years ago by Vito Salerno, the cafe has also evolved from a bar into a family-style Italian restaurant. Anthony's father ran it with his wife, Anna, for many years, and sons Mike and Joe and Mike's wife, Terry, built it into the business it is today. The menu has grown to include homemade pasta like ravioli, fusilli, and gnocchi. Tripe, soffritto, and chicken parmesan are other customer favorites.

Indiana County’s biggest claim to fame might be that it is the childhood home of beloved actor Jimmy Stewart. In more recent years, a group of area artists has been making a name for itself as well. Dotted throughout Indiana County, you’ll find studios dedicated to making pottery. 2021 will make the 15th year that studios will open their doors to welcome visitors to the Potters Tour. “This year we’ll have eight studios with 19 potters set up,” explained Nancy Smeltzer, potter and owner of Little Mahoning Creek Pottery in Smicksburg. Nancy’s studio is among those featured in this year’s event. She will be hosting three additional guest potters on her studio property. The Indiana County Potters Tour will be held on October 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. This selfguided tour allows visitors to see throwing demonstrations and find out the inspiration and technique behind the work fashioned by the artists. Each potter will also have some of their creations available for sale.

The potters on the tour are a close-knit group who are supportive of each other. “We have a good exchange of ideas when we get together. We really are a community,” Smeltzer shared. After deciding to cancel the event in 2020, the artisans are looking forward to welcoming guests again. One of the perks of having the tour in the fall is that guests experience the Indiana County countryside in all its autumn glory.
