“There are many paths in life from which to choose,” says Batz. “In writing about the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix and Northern Arizona’s restaurant renaissance, I was reminded that both the literal and metaphorical paths we choose to take along our life’s journey may lead to something magical.” Batz is a freelance writer.
“I loved learning that the Tucson International Airport is providing a unique venue for local artists to showcase their work,” says Everson, a freelance writer and editor. Everson’s work has been seen in magazines, newspapers, and online outlets across Arizona and nationally.
“I was born and raised in Arizona and I had no idea we are home to a restaurant so rich in history. It was fascinating to learn about the Flores family. Writing this piece made me realize I need to get out and explore even more!” says Fuchs. She is a mother, wife, writer, and founder of the mom-friendly lifestyle website Yay Baby! blog
“While researching women chefs in Phoenix, I was blown away by the
sense of community. The chefs want to be a part of something bigger and bring joy through their food.
The article about guest ranches takes me to my childhood. I grew up on horseback and there’s something magical about seeing the desert from a saddle.” Lanier-Graham is a writer and editor, and founder of the online travel publication Wander
“Nosing around Sedona to uncover its secluded spiritual hot spots was soul-stirring for me. Most spots are in natural outdoor spaces, which I found inspirational for meditation and contemplation,” Wittig says. Wittig writes about immersive travel from her home in Munds Park, between two of her favorite places, Sedona and Flagsta . The Arizonan publishes stories about culture and spiritual journeys at www.unstoppablestaceytravel.com.
“The Lost Dutchman Mine is a perfect storm that stand-the-test-of-time legends are made of: Great riches, death, mystery, and adventure-seekers foolishly believing they can outlast a cruel desert fiercely protecting its secrets,” says Yara, a freelance journalist who writes for a number of print and online publications. “Whether or not the mine exists, the lore is very uniquely Arizona.”
The largest metropolitan area in the Southwestern United States, Greater Phoenix encompasses more than 20 cities and towns, including Scottsdale, Phoenix (which is the capital of the state), Cave Creek, Carefree, Paradise Valley, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Glendale. Its nickname is the Valley of the Sun, bestowed in recognition of the average 300 days of sunshine the Valley—so called because the area lies in the Salt River Valley—enjoys each year. Metro Phoenix is known for its high-end spas, golf courses, restaurants, and of course, cacti and scenic views.
Northern Arizona includes cities such as Sedona, Flagstaff, Payson, Pinetop, and Williams. The area features the famous red rocks of Sedona, several mountain ranges—including the San Francisco Peaks—and the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in North America. Of course, it’s also the location of the famous Grand Canyon, as well as Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, the Painted Desert, Slide Rock State Park, Antelope Canyon, and Meteor Crater. Due to its elevation, Northern Arizona experiences more seasonal weather than the Valley of the Sun, often including heavy snow. Skiing is a popular pastime.
There’s a lot of history to explore in Southern Arizona, from ancient ruins to abandoned mines to locales made famous during the Wild West days. Tucson is the region’s largest city, and is today filled with golf courses, spas, and a popular food scene. Tombstone and Bisbee are known for their Old West vibes, while Sonoita, Elgin, and Willcox are popular locations for wineries and distilleries. The area is also home to Tubac, Yuma, and Sierra Vista. Southern Arizona, which borders Mexico, tends to have a warm, dry climate.

The Japanese Friendship Garden showcases water features such as this waterfall.
The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix offers meaningful respite in the heart of the Sonoran Desert
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZThough formal and informal relationships between cities worldwide have been documented for centuries, in 1956—thanks to the support of President Dwight D. Eisenhower—the Sister City movement gained momentum nationwide. The program, meant to foster the open and peaceful exchange of cultural, social, educational, and economic ideas between cities, first made its way to the Valley in 1972 when Phoenix announced its first-ever Sister City as Hermosillo, Mexico. In 1976, Phoenix partnered with Himeji, Japan, followed by eight other cities across the globe.
The Sister City relationship with Himeji is a special one as it led to the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, which is located just north of Downtown Phoenix next to Margaret T. Hance Park.
“The Japanese Friendship Garden was first proposed in 1986 by thenHimeji Mayor Matsuji Totani to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of being Sister Cities, as well as to create a physical representation of the blooming long-term relationship,” says Celina Coleman, executive director of the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix. “A massive undertaking, the garden was completed in stages, fully opening its 3.5 acres of wonder in 2002.”
Both Himeji and Phoenix master gardeners designed the space together as homage to a traditional Japanese strolling garden.
“The garden’s design is deliberate, offering guests who visit a leisurely walk along a path,” says Coleman. “The path encircles a large pond that boasts a 12-foot waterfall, as well as 300plus koi fish. Ducks, fisher birds, prehistoriclooking cormorant, and even heron visit the pond from time to time.”
The presence of heron is special because Himeji considers the bird as its symbol. In addition, the city’s greatest monument, Himeji Castle, is known as White Heron Castle thanks to its sophisticated, white design.
“In Himeji, the Japanese Friendship Garden is even referred to as RoHoEn because Ro, Ho, and En are the words for heron, Phoenix, and garden,” says Coleman.
In addition to the pond, there are more than 50 varieties of plants throughout the garden.
“Japanese gardens place significance on greenery,” says Coleman. “As you can imagine, recreating an authentic setting that matches the lushness and vivid ground cover of a true Japanese garden in the middle of the Sonoran Desert is a challenge.”
To overcome this, gardeners worked directly with their counterparts in Himeji to match the colors and textures of indigenous plants to those in Himeji.
“Japan is known for its brilliant mosses and distinct grasses,” says Coleman. “Given moss could not flourish, we have Kurapia, known for their distinct small-leaf look.”
Kurapia provides similar ground cover but are drought-resistant.
“We also substitute Aleppo pine trees, a drought-resident evergreen tree, for the Japanese black pines one would find across Asia,” says Coleman. “Each is meticulously
pruned so they maintain an intricate, sculpted shape year-round.”
Coleman adds another critical feature in a Japanese garden: Cherry blossom trees.
“Our garden curator and his team re-created the look and feel of these iconic trees, known for their light pink to white blossoms in the spring, by using a combination of Mexican redbuds and select orchids,” says Coleman. “We also have rain lilies that blossom with soft pink and white flowers when the monsoon rains roll in each year.”
In addition to the elegantly structured flora and pond bustling with wildlife, there is also a traditional Japanese tea house at the garden.
“The Japanese Friendship Garden tea house practices Urasenke tea service, which is equal parts ceremony and art that requires formal training and meticulous preparation. This type of ceremony only uses matcha tea and is focused on achieving ichigo-ichie,” says Coleman. “Ichigo-
ichie essentially means that there will never be this very moment again, so participants must be fully present to treasure the shared moment.”
Tea services are held from October through June. Participants watch a tea preparation and then enjoy a ceremony. The experience is 90 minutes, including 30 minutes of complete silence, and is limited to guests ages 12 years or older.
There are several other events that take place at the garden in addition to the tea service. The two biggest events are Otsukimi and Haru in the Garden.
“Otsukimi takes place each October in line with the full moon. This is our big moon viewing festival with art installations, live music, sake, and more,” says Coleman. “Haru is as close to the first day of spring each year as possible and is geared toward families, with several kid-friendly activities, including our koi-shaped kites.”
Visit two craft cocktail bars named among the best in the country
BY GEORGANN YARAFrom left: Brass in Pocket at Little Rituals; Nuts and Berries at Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour. Previous, from left: Diaqurry at Little Rituals; Pleasure Island at Little Rituals.
There’s no sign in the lobby. No placard in the elevator indicating where to find it.
However, pedestrians in the right spot can look up and see a neon sign that hints at something cool above. As the sun succumbs to evening, Little Rituals, a bar located in the heart of Phoenix, beckons to passersby below as floor-to-ceiling windows flaunt a sleek illuminated space accented by an elegant chandelier installment.
Located on the fourth floor of a Residence Inn/Courtyard by Marriott, the locale not only presents an unexpected, elevated bar scene with a clandestine vibe, but it is one of the top-rated cocktail bars in the country. Of the Top 10 from around the U.S., it is one of two from Arizona.
The second is within an easy 374-foot stroll.
With cool, welcoming ambiances and inventive craft cocktails that balance quirky outrageousness with serious spirit mixing, Little Rituals and Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour earned coveted 2022 Top 10 U.S. category bar nods at the Tales of the Cocktail Foundation’s Spirited Awards. These establishments dazzled judges who deemed them worthy of recognition reserved for the most exemplary establishments around the globe.
The bars share owner Ross Simon, the much-lauded veteran barman who hails from Scotland and who cut his teeth tending bar at the London Academy of Bartenders before bringing his talents to a thirsty Phoenix audience yearning for innovative libations like those shaken and stirred at New York City and San Francisco hot spots.
Also named among the Top 4 Hotel Bars in the country by Tales of the Cocktail, Little Rituals’ location adds an unexpected twist.
“We never intended to have it feel like a speakeasy. But the fact that it’s on the fourth floor and hidden does promote a little bit of a hidden find,” says Aaron DeFeo, Little Rituals’ co-founder.
In addition to 500 different spirits, the menu features 30 different cocktail choices, offering a style for truly everyone. Many, like The Ponzi Scheme—a union of marigold-infused Eagle Rare Bourbon, Amaro Montenegro, Benedictine, and angostura and saffron bitters that yield a rich and floral sipper—are connoisseur-worthy and playful. Bring back the coin pinned to the rim on a future visit for an unexpected return on your investment.
“You may get a hat, a tasting of a rare tequila, or a high-five,” DeFeo says. “It all depends on the bartender and their mood.”
A mix of low tables, high tops, bar seating, and sumptuous booths are done in contemporary shades with a pinch of vintage flair. A mural at the bar celebrates great Arizona signatures such as Havasupai Falls, the bridge at Tempe Town Lake, and Phoenix’s Valley Metro light rail. Images of Scottsdaleborn actress Emma Stone, the late Senator John McCain, and Senator Kyrsten Sinema also grace it.
There’s also an image of Alfred Hitchcock. The reason for this is located a two-minute jaunt away, across the street from the other top bar, Bitter & Twisted.
The doors to Bitter & Twisted face the Barrister Building. Built in 1915, it’s featured in the opening sequence in the director’s Psycho as the location for Janet Leigh’s romantic trysts.
Bitter & Twisted calls the historic Luhrs Building home. Built in 1924, it once housed the Arizona Prohibition Headquarters and the Arizona Club, an exclusive men’s club. Legend has it that during Prohibition, officials poured illegal booze down the drains only to have maintenance men collect it below for their own informal happy hours.
Incorporation of the original pillars and rafters overhead are subtle reminders of the building’s past to 21st-century imbibers. Amid these vintage environs is where the state’s most acclaimed bar runs its cutting-edge cocktails program that utilizes modern methods and futuristic formulas to create its unique offerings.
“It’s such a new city and there’s not a lot of history. So, we are very lucky to have a one-of-a-kind space … on top of a fun little cocktail bar, as well,” Simon says.
Game-day goers, out-of-towners, and whiskey aficionados are equally at home at the sophisticated yet unpretentious establishment that aims to be a gateway to the cocktail scene. The outrageously huge drink menu engages and packs a wow factor by boasting dozens of cocktails spanning classics, spins on classics, and unheard of concoctions that cannot be passed up—all brought to life by premium ingredients, inhouse infused spirits, and homemade syrups.
“We try to have fun and be creative as far as we can, from the mix of flavors and ingredients to the vessel we serve the drink in,” Simon says.
Case in point: The Duck Bath Punch made with Hendricks
gin, Earl Grey tea, and other magical touches. Cucumber air is pumped in for the bubble bath effect, and rubber duckies bob in their porcelain mini bath tub.
Even with all the national accolades and attention, the opportunity to make the best first impression remains a thrill.
“I love when people get off a plane and they’ve still got their bags with them because we’re their first stop before they check in anywhere,” Simon says. “When we can be part of that, it gives us the warm and fuzzies.”

Female chefs are making their marks on the Valley’s culinary scene
BY SUSAN LANIER-GRAHAMThe Valley of the Sun’s culinary scene is booming, and female chefs are helping lead the charge to make it one of the best in the country.
Between them, they’ve won an impressive range of awards. They’ve also cultivated a unique camaraderie and network of support.
The awards and accolades include the annual James Beard Foundation Awards. Charleen Badman, co-owner and chef at FnB in Scottsdale, was a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest from 2015 through 2018, and took home the winning title in 2019. Phoenix restaurateur Lori Hashimoto, co-owner and chef of Hana Japanese Eatery, joined Badman on the James Beard list as a semifinalist for Best Chef: Southwest in 2022.
Whether they have won awards or not, each of these chefs shares a passion for food and loves the connections the industry fosters.
Badman opened FnB in Downtown Scottsdale in 2009, and her James Beard Awards are well deserved. Every dish comes out of the kitchen with love and local ingredients.
“We have great farmers here,” she explains. “I enjoy that I’m able to showcase how much everyone produces in the state.”
FnB guests are always surprised at the variety of fruits, vegetables, and grains grown in Arizona.
Badman shares how—despite tough times during the pandemic—female chefs in Phoenix rallied.
“Women in my industry came together and tightened up,” she says.
In fact, the Let’s Talk Womxn forums began in 2020 as a way to connect more than 350 women restaurateurs and owners across 12 cities. One of the results here in Phoenix was the launch of AZWomenInFood.
“We’ve all needed the encouragement,” Badman explains. “You get on a call, maybe not in a good mood, but you get off the call feeling much better. It helps to know that you’re not alone.”
AZ Women in Food members include Badman, her fellow James Beard nominee Hashimoto, and 13 other female chefs. Some of the most well-known members of the group include Jennifer Russo of The Market by Jennifer’s Restaurant & Bar; Jennifer Caraway, whose The Joy Bus Diner—a nonprofit restaurant at Shea Boulevard and State Route 51—supports The Joy Bus, which serves local cancer patients; Maya Bartlett of Maya’s Cajun Kitchen, serving Cajun-inspired vegan food at the Downtown Phoenix Farmers Market; and Tracy Dempsey, whose Tracy Dempsey Originals is a Valley favorite for sweet and savory confections.
Female chefs across Phoenix are shaking up the food scene in many
ways. Melissa Harlan, owner of Drink Me! Tea Room in Tempe, fell in love with afternoon tea on a trip to London. But, as a plant-based and gluten-free eater, she wanted something different—so she opened Drink Me! Tea Room as a vegan and gluten-free tea experience in her Tempe neighborhood.
Harlan says the best part is providing a safe place for people with food restrictions.
“We had a family whose young daughter was hospitalized for four days, only to discover she is celiac [gluten allergy],” relates Harlan. “One month later, she was enjoying gluten-free and diary-free food in our tea room.”
Harlan offers traditional treats and savory items that everyone—with or without food allergies—can enjoy.
“We make everything from scratch in-house and use only organic or non-GMO ingredients,” she says.
Drink Me! Tea Room serves 30 different teas and offers a Special-Tea cocktail menu.
Harlan, like Badman, finds the support of other women business owners to be crucial to her success.
“I’ve been able to connect and partner with other small businesses to help support each other in the community. That has been invaluable to me.”
Samantha Sanz, chef de cuisine at elements at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain, places much of her success on industry connections. Sanz, who began her culinary career in her grandmother’s restaurant, Trocadero, in Nogales, Mexico, eventually received a culinary degree from Scottsdale’s Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts.
“Phoenix has been welcoming and supportive to me,” she reflects. “I achieved some of the goals on my bucket list because of the support I have received here in Phoenix.”
She sees great things ahead for women chefs and the Phoenix food scene.
“There are many more restaurants opening up with chefs who want to showcase their creativity and aren’t afraid to be adventurous,” she says.
Female chefs in Phoenix say they find inspiration from the past, from other women, and from their customers.
Dana Dumas, head chef and owner of SugarJam The Southern Kitchen in Scottsdale, fell in love with food as a child. In fact, Dumas expanded her home-based bakery into the bakery, bar, and brunch restaurant to serve her grandma’s cooking style—Southern with an eclectic touch.
Dumas also credits B. Smith, the first African American model on the cover of Mademoiselle magazine, with inspiring her.
“She grew her empire to become a restaurateur in New York, to write cookbooks, and have a line of home goods. She broke down doors!”
Dumas hopes her success as a chef can inspire other women.
“I hope I am an example of pride, passion, dedication, and perseverance for other young girls—both those who look like me and those who don’t. As a woman, you can be what you want to be! Have the desire, develop a plan, be around inspiring people, and push forward,” she says.
For more than a hundred years, the Lost Dutchman Mine has drawn wealth-seekers from around the globe on a chase for a treasure that may not even exist
BY GEORGANN YARABelow: The Superstition Mountain Museum has been the site of several movie sets, which have included this replica Wild West town complete with a Western jail, as well as the Elvis Chapel and Apacheland Barn. Opposite: The Superstition Mountains.
Its fiercely protective terrain has claimed lives from hubrist treasure hunters. Yet for more than a century, many have been a fool for the gold promised in the legend of The Lost Dutchman Mine.
Located in the Superstition Mountains about 40 miles east of Phoenix, the yarn has drawn wealth-seekers since the 19th century, and inspired books, articles, and films, including the 1949 Western Lust for Gold, starring Glenn Ford. Amid the publicity, the treasure’s location remains a mystery. And, there hasn’t been any real proof it even exists. Still, visitors are convinced it does. Modern-day sleuthing on Google Earth or of published clues are the basis of their claims.
“We get a lot of people coming in from around the world who stop by and say, ‘I found the mine. Come up with me and I’ll show you,’” says David Raring, acting manager of the Superstition Mountain Museum, which is the on-site host of the Lost Dutchman Exhibit.
But, there are reasons why some who follow their hunches never make it back to confirm them: Magnetic rock that stymies compasses. Brutal inferno-like summers and hyperthermia-inducing winters. Treacherous geography that tests the most experienced hikers. Desert dwellers with deadly bites. A dizzying and disorienting maze of canyons. All of these comprise nature’s defense system.
A cell phone is often useless, too.
“There have been a lot of pieces of bodies found. You break an ankle … no one’s going to find you,” Raring says.
The theories are abundant. But the man for whom the mine is named and
that he possessed gold are confirmed facts.
Ironically, he was not Dutch. Nor was he lost.
German native Jacob Waltz was a prospector who mined for wealth across the country after moving to the U.S. He arrived in Arizona in the 1870s to chase a gold mine, part of a fortune belonging to the Peralta family who mined in the Superstitions.
On the Peraltas’ last expedition in 1848, the party was ambushed by members of the San Carlos Apache tribe on their way back to Mexico. A surviving descendant supposedly revealed the location to Waltz.
Waltz’s treasure hunt was a success. He hid high-grade ore under his bed and later bequeathed to friends. Some of the treasure ended up sold to a mint in San Francisco. Slivers were incorporated into a stunning matchbox that is currently in the possession of one of the museum’s founders.
Waltz later moved to Phoenix, where he disclosed the mine’s location to a neighbor who cared for him during his last days before his death in 1891. Neither she nor other adventurers were successful.
Today, Raring and the handful of experts who have intensive knowledge of the area—and spent more time in it than anyone else— seriously doubt the mine’s existence.
So why does the Lost Dutchman Mine legend live on?
“I don’t think there’s a story in Arizona or in the West that bears the potential of great riches like this one. It’s a fascinating story of great legend and lore,” Raring says. “It’s such an intriguing story that people believe, ‘If no one can find it, well, I can do it.’”

INTERVIEWED BY MICHELLE GLICKSMANWhat do you love most about football?
Football has been foundational to my life since I was a kid. Through the sport, I have learned lessons in resilience, leadership, dedication, work ethic, grit, and more. But above all, the camaraderie with my teammates and coaches is what I love the most. You go through a lot with your teammates and coaches, and I’ve built trusted and lasting friendships that are incredibly rewarding.
You spent your entire career with the Arizona Cardinals— what was it about the Cardinals organization and the city that kept you here?
The Arizona Cardinals gave me my first shot to live my dream of playing in the NFL. I was drafted by the Cardinals in 2004, and I really grew up in the organization. I learned from the example set by Mr. B. to the leadership of Michael Bidwill, who I am honored to call a friend. I definitely feel the love
from the Arizona community and the fans here. I feel fortunate that this community has embraced me, and I have loved putting roots down here. Arizona is home.
Do you have a favorite football memory?
There have been so many exciting games and great plays with my teammates, but some of my favorite football memories have happened off the field. Being a professional athlete provides a platform to make a positive impact on the community. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Visiting with kids facing serious challenges and getting to see the hope and joy on their faces is special beyond words.

You are very philanthropic. Can you tell us about The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation? The mission of The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation is to support youth education and breast cancer awareness. We aim to create opportunities for young people to thrive in safe and healthy environments, where they can reach their full potential. Additionally, we provide resources, education, and support to those impacted by breast cancer by supporting organizations that serve those in need.
someone who was just diagnosed with a serious illness, and seeing the impact it had on their families, gave me a unique insight most kids that age don’t have an opportunity to experience. That, along with my mom’s commitment to be of service to others, lead to a deep desire to help. I also believe kids need positive mentorship and guidance. I’m truly passionate about these issues, and I want to give back to the youth as long as I’m on this earth. They are the future. It’s my way of giving back to the world and my community.
What’s the next big thing for you?
Is there an achievement you’re most proud of?
Without a doubt, receiving the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award in 2016 was the proudest accomplishment of my
Why is philanthropy important to you?
Growing up, I got to see my mom doing work in her nonprofits involving HIV/AIDS and breast cancer. Being in the room with
My main focus going forward is really leaning into philanthropy and expanding the impact of The Larry Fitzgerald Foundation. I am excited to build up the Foundation to reach its full potential to give back. I also enjoy investing in businesses that enhance our community and help create a more sustainable world.
