Arizona Restaurant Week—which happens just twice a year—is a foodie’s dream, with participating locations across the state offering three-course prix fixe menus for just $33, $44, or $55 per person.

It’s a perfect time to explore the state’s culinary breadth and the talent of chef-driven establishments. Dishes not normally served are often featured on these menus, giving chefs a chance to truly get creative and use very seasonal items, while giving diners a taste of something new.

Not Your Usual Liquor Store

Yes, Trevor’s Liquor sells wine, spirits, and beer. But this locallyowned destination—which recently opened a second Valley locale—is not your typical liquor store. It’s so, so much more.

UP ON THE ROOF

Old Town Scottsdale’s newest rooftop restaurant and bar, Pour Decisions Patio & Kitchen, offers perfectly chilled drinks, top-notch eats, live entertainment, and a rooftop view of the mountains.

This casual, yet elevated gathering spot is a hip locale where you can sip and sample a curated lineup of wines, local beers, and classic cocktails.

The dining menu offers an array of elevated bar food classics, like a unique and interactive take on a classic chopped salad (a dish layered inside a mason jar where the dressing is added and shaken tableside), as well as made-to-order street tacos, hot-toasted sandwiches, and individual artisan pizzas.

Eat, Drink, Golf

There’s a new place to golf—and drink and dine—in the Valley. PopStroke is an experiential golf and casual dining concept merging a dynamic, technologically-advanced golf environment with food and beverages.

The technology-infused venue features golf superstar Tiger Woods’ TGR Design team’s one-of-a-kind golf experience with two 18-hole putting courses.

There’s also an outdoor dining area with a full menu, craft beer, wine, signature cocktails, an ice cream parlor, an outdoor game area, and a playground.

The putting courses were created entirely with synthetic turf, incorporating undulations, fairways, bunkers, and rough as seen on traditional golf courses. The Tiger Red Course challenges even the most experienced putters with strong contouring and tricky hole locations. The Tiger Black Course has softened contours to create an ideal course for families and anyone new to golf.

TIGER WOODS’ TGR DESIGN CREATED THE 18-HOLE PUTTING COURSES

A Slice of the Mediterranean

The elevated Mediterranean concept Arboleda recently opened in the Valley. Designed to be a place to experience, not just dine, the space features floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the patio, a deep gray barrel-vaulted ceiling, and a 14-foot olive tree as a centerpiece.

“Arboleda means grove of trees in Spanish,” says co-owner Björn Kock. “We wanted the space to have that organic feel and sense of space—playful but beautifully refined. We want people to be engrossed in the whole experience, not just what is on their plate.”

The concept incorporates locally and globally sourced ingredients while adding a modern twist. Find dishes such as a whipped foie gras cone; charred Portuguese octopus; butternut squash ravioli; the 32oz Flannery 28-day aged ribeye “el Jorge;” and a red royal shrimp dish called gambas píl píl or iberico pork “pluma,” which is made using the end loin on the Iberico pig which many consider the wagyu of pork.

There’s also an innovative cocktail menu and an extensive wine list.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A CHEF?

I’m a fourth-generation restauranteur, so I always say it’s kind of in my blood. Some of my first memories are eating bread and gourmet cheeses in the kitchen with my dad late at night while he told me about his day. I started helping in his restaurants when I was 5, and there’s honestly nothing else I ever considered doing. I love it.

We are a collection of neighborhood restaurants that focus on delivering the highest-quality food and outstanding service, where everyone feels like part of the family. The key is having an amazing team that helps me run the restaurants and continue to make our company better.

MOST POPULAR DISH ON YOUR MENU?

Charred Brussels Sprouts. We put them on the menu when we first opened Twisted Grove (now Collins Bros. Chophouse) and

they’ve gotten such a following over the years, we’ve added them to almost every concept’s menu. I also love that I feel like I have tricked all the neighborhood kids into liking Brussels sprouts.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN THE VALLEY?

This is where I grew up and I love that my own kids are now growing up in the same community I did. My dream was always to open a local restaurant company, and having our communities support us so profoundly us over the years has only deepened my love for Arizona.

THREE PLACES YOU ALWAYS TAKE VISITORS?

Bartlett Lake—everyone is always stunned that Arizona has so many beautiful lakes! A Phoenix Suns Game. Hiking/a mountain bike ride at South Mountain Preserve.

WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A CHEF?

I never really wanted to be a chef, but my senior year in high school I started watching the Food Network’s Iron Chef. The food they were putting out looked like a work of art. I was always interested in automotive work, so at the time I wanted to work in the automotive field. I asked my dad what I should do, and his answer was, “If you’re a chef you will always have clean hands.” That conversation made me think about really going to culinary school. In the last months, I asked every girl in my class who would they rather date, a chef or mechanic. Not one said a mechanic, so I went to culinary school. Lol.

DESCRIBE YOUR RESTAURANT …

Anhelo is the restaurant that Downtown Phoenix never knew it needed. A true fine dining contemporary American restaurant where we put the guest first.

MOST POPULAR DISH ON YOUR MENU?

Currently the classic Beef Wellington.

ANY COOKING TIP YOU CAN SHARE?

Don’t be afraid. At the end of the day it’s just food. If you ruin it, it’s okay to start over and learn from your mistakes.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT LIVING IN THE VALLEY?

It’s a great place! I lived in Downtown Phoenix before becoming a father. Now I live in Tempe and it’s the perfect mix for me.

THREE PLACES YOU ALWAYS TAKE VISITORS?

A Phoenix Suns game. Dad activities/Tempe Town Lake (you can catch me hanging out with my family on a picnic with our two corgis). Any of the hiking trails or beautiful parks our state has.

If I’m going out with family, Ocean 44. If I’m inviting friends who love interior decor, I’ll take them to Tia Carmen. It’s by far the most beautiful restaurant in Arizona. If I’m hanging out with friends who love hospitality, I’ll take them to Café Monarch.

YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL FOOD BRANDS OR ITEMS?

I’m big on supporting the people behind the brand or item, not just the product. That being said, I will always support my friend Brian from Hypha Foods.

We’ll never know. I cannot see myself doing anything else outside of hospitality industry.

PHOENI CHARS LIVE

This Phoenix nightclub is a go-to for live R&B, blues, jazz, funk, and more. It was originally built as a family house in 1944, then converted to a ballet studio in the ’60s before becoming a bar in 1981. After a few years, Chars officially hit the scene in 1985— and the rest is history. In 2022, under a new ownership and management team, Chars LIVE underwent a facelift and reopened to offer more live music.

A rock and roll bar in the heart of Downtown Phoenix that offers classic and contemporary rock, this location has been playing live music on its unique stage since 2010. THE NASH

This jazz lounge in Downtown Phoenix is named after local Phoenix musician Lewis Nash. It originally opened in 2012 as a nonprofit educational center, but has now grown into hosting large jazz performances. New Spots to Sip At

Though not yet halfway through 2023, the year has already been among the biggest when it comes to the Valley’s cocktail culture. Here are just some of the new spots to sip at around town.

DRINKS WITH A VIEW

The Valley has two new sky-high spots for drinks with a view: Pour Decisions Patio & Kitchen (www.pourdecisionsscottsdale.com) and The Rooftop at STK Steakhouse (www.stksteakhouse.com). One of the only rooftop bars in Old Town Scottsdale not connected to a hotel, Pour Decisions does not believe in “well-drinks,” meaning cocktails made with lower-cost, mass-distributed spirits, and instead focuses on “well-made” drinks made with fresh, premium ingredients and quirky twists like alcohol-infused ice cream, as well as modern takes on all things tiki. The space also boasts a 16-foot LED TV screen with an elevated stage for popular televised events and live entertainment.

The Rooftop at STK is an elegant extension of STK Steakhouse and offers guests the opportunity to enjoy STK’s craveable menus al fresco with a beautiful view of the canal, complete with a gorgeous fireplace as its centerpiece. Here you can enjoy an extensive specialty cocktail menu that includes options such as the Spiced Watermelon, a tequila offering with watermelon water, fresh lime and jalapeño, and French Love, a gin and champagne masterpiece.

FLOCK, YEAH!

Flock, yeah! Night Owl (www.nightowlaz.com) has had guests flying high since March with its cocktail bar-meets-arcade-meets-skateboard museum-meets-pizza parlor concept, which is truly unlike any other in Arizona. The venue features a full-scale arcade with pinball machines, vintage arcade games, more than a dozen table and/or board games from which to choose, multiple pop culture art pieces with skateboard- and owl-themed art installations, and even a psychedelic funhouse mirror that leads the way to the restrooms. The bar itself is made from retired pinball machines, and the drink menu boasts more than two dozen beers by the bottle or on draft, select wines by the bottle and glass, and 10 specialty cocktails.

HIDE AND SEEK

In 2022, Wren & Wolf (www.wrenandwolf.com) roared into the Valley. Equal parts coffee shop, casual afternoon eatery, fine-dining destination, and modern nightclub complete with DJs, the exceptionally eccentric-yet-excellent cocktail menu with an over-the-top presentation made headlines everywhere. In a bold move, the concept announced an expansion earlier this year with Trophy Room (www.bestcocktailbarphoenix.com), a secret lounge inside of Wren that neither allows photography nor phones to keep the experience a surprise for all those who enter.

FYPM (www.fypmphx.com) is similarly hidden from plain sight. Located inside of Disco Dragon on Roosevelt Row, this ultra-progressive bar is the brainchild of the team behind Disco Dragon, Killer Whale Sex Club, and Pour Bastards. Reservations are strongly suggested, and the booking fee covers a welcome shot, snack, and each guest’s first cocktail.

CHEERS TO DOWNTOWN!

Joining Wren, Trophy, and FYPM in opening in Downtown Phoenix in recent months—but easy to find and not hidden away—are Quartz

(www.quartzphx.com) and Teddy’s Preserve (www.teddyspreserve. com). Quartz is a standalone bar from the teams behind Sin Muerte and The Rebel Lounge. Its focus is to showcase libations in a way that touches all five senses, especially through vibrant visual presentations. The menu is inspired by deserts around the world, and of course, includes several nods to the surrounding Sonoran Desert.

Despite the name, Teddy’s Preserve is not a Build-A-Bear with drink service. It is named for President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and decked out with greenery in every direction as homage to his tireless work to protect national parks. For those unaware of the connection, Roosevelt doubled the number of sites within the National Parks system while in office and established the Antiquities Act, allowing the protection of national landmarks, including Arizona’s Montezuma Castle, Petrified Forest, and Grand Canyon. There are rustic, experiential, shaken, stirred, and even frozen offerings on this eclectic and fun menu.

GLOBAL GLASSES

Need a vacation? Both Arboleda (www.arboledaaz.com) and 50 Shakes of Sake (www.50shadesofroseaz.com) offer it by the glass. Arboleda is an exquisite new eatery and bar whose dishes and drinks are love letters to the coastal eateries that border the Mediterranean. The cocktail program features seven specialty recipes, as well as sangria made with ruby port and several European beers and wines.

50 Shades of Sake is a pop-up experience available through the summer, which takes over 50 Shades of Rosé. As one might guess, it is all things Asian, from its glowing signs and anime wall art to its assortment of wildly garnished cocktails. Think Nintendo, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, and more.

TWICE AS NICE

Finally, Trevor’s Liquor (www.trevors.com) recently opened a second Scottsdale location. Well beyond a “liquor store,” Trevor’s features an artisanal pizza kitchen; games; two golf simulators; a trendy cigar lounge; a walk in-humidor; a luxury champagne room; and a full bar featuring draft beer, fine wine, craft cocktails, rare spirits; and more.

MUSIC IN THE GARDEN

As the sun sets, head to Desert Botanical Garden for Friday nights filled with music, memories, and a full Sonoran Desert experience. The Garden, which is set on 140 acres and has 50,000-plus plants displayed throughout, hosts its yearly Music in the Garden series. Doors open at 6 p.m. each Friday, and the concerts are held from 7-9 p.m. The featured artists change weekly. May 5: Bluesman Mike & The Blues Review Band (blues). May 12: R.
