A Unique Museum
The Museum of Illusions opened last month in the Arizona Boardwalk destination in Scottsdale. Here, you can walk on walls in the Rotated Room, defy gravity in the Tilted Room, and appear to grow and shrink in the Ames Room.
There are more than 60 exhibits at this latest installment of the museum, which has 35 locations worldwide. Via holograms, stereograms, and optical illusions, learn about vision, perception, and the human brain, as well as experience firsthand the science of how the eyes can trick the mind. Exhibits range from classics to the never-before-seen.
“While our museum certainly is visually engaging and has those photoworthy moments, it is about so much more,” says Stacy Stec, director of sales and marketing for LOL Entertainment, the parent company of Museum of Illusions Scottsdale. “We’ve carefully and thoughtfully designed this museum to provide an educational experience that will leave guests feeling inspired long after they leave. We can’t wait to challenge minds and provide a hands-on, immersive experience for all ages.”

Ready for a sweet treat? The newest ice cream shop in town is Jeni’s. The nationwide ice cream shop, which builds ice creams completely from scratch using a unique recipe honed and perfected over more than 20 years by its founder, Jeni Britton, recently opened in Old Town Scottsdale.
Jeni’s prides itself on “flavors inspired by our curiosities—art, history, pop culture, and beyond—that simply don’t exist anywhere else.” For example, there are classics such as the Brambleberry Crisp and Brown Butter Almond Brittle, or the recent limitededition Biscuits with the Boss, which was inspired by the Emmy award-winning series Ted Lasso (the flavor featured shortbread cookie crumbles folded into a salted butter sweet cream ice cream). 7051 E. Italian, With a Twist
A sister restaurant to one of the Valley’s beloved Italian locales—Pomo Pizzeria— recently opened in Downtown Phoenix. Created by Pomo Restaurant Group, Rosso Italian offers a contemporary take on premium Italian cuisine, drawing inspiration from global flavors and influences.
The 5,000-square-foot space is sleek and rustic, with a touch of Italian warmth. There is also a bar, and a pet-friendly patio.
As for the menu, it features a selection of carefully crafted entrees, appetizers, seafood, and the signature Napoletana pizza from Pomo Pizzeria. Some standout menu items are the Tagliata di Manzo, Pork Chop Milanese, House-Made Gnocchi Burrata, Fusilloni Rosso, Yellowtail Crudo, Tuna Tartare Burrata, and Beef Carpaccio.
“I have always harbored a dream of expanding Pomo Restaurant Group with a new twist,” says owner Stefano Fabbri. “The energy and vibe of Downtown Phoenix, combined with the perfect location and ambiance, solidified my belief that Rosso Italian would be the ultimate dining experience.” 2 E. AN OASIS IN THE DESERT
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX, CAREFREE DESERT GARDENS, DESERT BOTANICAL GARDENExplore these unique destinations, where landscapes delight and serenity abounds
BY MICHELLE GLICKSMANWhen you think of Arizona, the word “garden” probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. Mountains, cacti, and vistas of desert brown, perhaps, but for most, garden isn’t top-of-mind. Although they may not be filled with the typical lush landscapes with flowers that you might think of when you picture a garden, these public locales each offer a way to explore a unique landscape and flora, and to find perfect moments of serenity.
DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN
Set on 140 acres–with 55 under cultivation–amongst the red rocks of Papago Buttes in Phoenix, is Desert Botanical Garden (DBG), one of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and an Arizona icon for nearly 85 years.
Here, you can view more than 50,000 desert plants showcased in outdoor exhibits. There are five themed trails to explore. The Sonoran Desert Nature Loop Trail features sweeping mountain views, telescopes, and an organ pipe cactus forest, while the Center

And on the Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert Loop Trail, wander through five diverse desert habitats and discover the variety of ways Indigenous people used native plants for food, shelter, and more.
The Garden also hosts a variety of special exhibits and events. This month, view Playing With Stars: Rotraut at Desert Botanical Garden, where the bold and lyrical large-scale sculptures of Rotraut are featured on various Garden trails, and a selection of her paintings and small sculptures are displayed in the Ottosen Gallery. JAPANESE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN OF PHOENIX
In the heart of Phoenix lies an unexpected treasure—a Japanese garden. Named RoHoEn, it is a joint project between the City of Phoenix and its sister city, Himeji, Japan. The idea for this 3.5-acre garden was proposed in 1987 as a way to solidify the bonds of friendship between the two countries, as well as the two cities.
The destination features a stroll garden, tea garden, a stone garden, and a courtyard garden. The stroll path is a loop that takes visitors through four different regions, hidden in a “hide and reveal” aspect that is typical of Japanese gardens.
Benches are strategically located throughout. There are also stone footbridges, lanterns, a koi pond, streams, a waterfall, and more than 50 varieties of plants.
The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix offers a monthly authentic tea ceremony (October through June), although this season is already sold out.

Other features include a children’s playground, a splash park, and a pavilion for events.

It’s not just for tandem jumps though—those who are experienced can also skydive here, and for those who want to earn a skydiving license, that’s available, too. And, the locale offers
