TECH

Lifa Infinity™ is a waterproof and breathable microporous membrane made from LIFA®, Helly Hansen’s proprietary technology based on the hydrophobic properties of polypropylene. The microporosity of the Lifa Infinity™ membrane is achieved without the use of chemical solvents which are commonplace in garments that include a breathable membrane. Through a process called hot-melt extrusion, LIFA® is repeatedly heated, stretched and folded back over itself to create a microporous membrane without the use of chemicals.

Building off of this membrane, Lifa Infinity™ includes a face fabric that is constructed using recycled materials and a PFC-free DWR treatment, creating a garment that is both professional-grade and highly responsible to the environment.

Lifa Infinity Pro™ is Helly Hansen’s most innovative and environmentally responsible waterproof/breathable technology to date. Challenging the industry norm, this first-to-market technology pushes the envelope in apparel design through advanced textile engineering and development. Using LIFA® fibers, a Helly Hansen technology that is lightweight and hydrophobic, the fully waterproof/breathable membrane and durable water repellent outer shell are achieved without the use of chemicals.

Combining the Lifa Infinity™ membrane with 100% LIFA® hydrophobic face fabric, Lifa Infinity Pro™ is a groundbreaking technology meeting the extreme waterproofness and breathability of HELLY TECH® Professional construction.

OCEAN BOUND RECYCLED MATERIAL

Ocean Bound plastic is plastic that is sourced within 50km (30 miles) of a coastline or main waterway in regions where waste is mismanaged. Discarded plastic waste ends up in streams and rivers which eventually all end up feeding into the ocean. By collecting the plastic at this stage, it is prevented from polluting oceans and harming marine life in the first place. The plastic is then recycled into one of two materials, polyamide or polyester, both of which are repurposed to create high-quality gear with the environment in mind. Spring/Summer 2023 marks the first use of Ocean Bound Recycled Material within the Outdoor Collection.

In an effort to make everyone in the outdoors searchable and help rescuers save lives, Helly Hansen has been partnering with RECCO® for over 15 years. Traditionally used with winter sports and ski outerwear, awareness is now growing to also being searchable in the spring, summer and fall when more people actually go missing while hiking and backpacking, for example.

Integrating RECCO® reflectors into backpacks and the arms, legs and hoods of outdoor garments make your gear searchable and can help a rescue team in a helicopter find you if you get lost in the mountains. RECCO® technology is a two-part system featuring an active detector, carried by the rescuer, and a super small and lightweight passive transponder that’s always on, carried by the user.

With the production of high-tech textiles comes concerns regarding water, energy and chemical consumption. That’s why Helly Hansen partnered with bluesign® in 2008 and over 70% of the sportswear line is bluesign® approved.

The widely recognized and independent bluesign® system acts as a global guiding tool for the entire textile industry’s production chain. It’s not about testing finished products, but rather starts from the ground up ensuring that the process is done right from its first stage all the way through. All components, from chemistry applied with raw materials and dye stuff to textile manufacturers, should meet the criteria. Bluesign’s input stream management system ensures specific threshold limits for chemical substances in finished chemical products. The limits follow a precautionary and hazard-based approach where bluesign system partners carefully track that no unwanted substances are used in any manufacturing step. The goal is to ensure that products are produced in an environmentally responsible way and pose no health hazards.
