EXPERIENCE THE OPEN MOUNTAIN WITH HELLY HANSEN
SPRING/SUMMER 2024
SPRING/SUMMER 2024
The Open Mountain is Helly Hansen’s global campaign to inspire and encourage all people to experience the power of spending time in nature.
For more than 140 years, Helly Hansen has been trusted by outdoor professionals to create performance-driven gear that allows them to stay and feel alive. Through continued storytelling that features select professional partners—with 40-year-old, US-based guiding company Mountain Madness as the focus for Spring/Summer 2024—The Open Mountain explores how life-enhancing it can be to spend time outside and what it means to be a professional in the outdoors, enabling those experiences.
In support of The Open Mountain and to further enable seasoned outdoor-goers and novices alike to get outdoors, Helly Hansen also facilitates connections between outdoor enthusiasts and seasoned professionals worldwide through a variety of global and regional activities, educational resources and inspiring content. Please visit https://www.hellyhansen.com/open-mountain for more information and to find an event near you, especially during “Open Mountain Month” this June 2024.
The mountains are open to everyone and Helly Hansen wants you to feel the pure joy that being in the great outdoors can bring.

Helly Hansen’s Spring/Summer 2024 campaign film, The Open Mountain, follows US-based Mountain Madness guide, Sean McNally, and two clients as they attempt a summit in the North Cascade mountains of Washington State. Through their journey we discover they not only achieve their goal of reaching the summit, but also experience the deeper successes achieved through spending time in the mountains. “Everyone has a different reason for wanting to reach the summit,” explains McNally. “Though often it’s the bits in between you remember the most – the time spent with people, the friendships, the experiences, the knowledge sharing – before making it safely to the top.”
On an equal level, the professionals experience the value and reward while teaching others to stay and feel alive in the outdoors. “I really enjoy watching people as they grow throughout a trip,” explains McNally. “It’s great to see the struggles as well as the high peaks; and being able to help them achieve what they can obviously already do…I wouldn’t trade it for anything else in the world.”
Founded in 1984 and recognized as one of the leading mountain guiding and trekking companies in the world, Mountain Madness became a household name in 1996 when Scot Fischer, the original founder, died on Everest as described in Into Thin Air. In 1997, Christine Boskoff, the leading female high-altitude climber at the time, took over ownership until sadly, during the fall of 2006, Chris and well-known American climber Charlie Fowler perished in Tibet in an avalanche. After that, in 2008, Seattle-native Mark Gunlogson became owner and has provided steadfast leadership ever since. In addition to offering award-winning trips in more than 25 countries, Mountain Madness has a solid philanthropic drive with involvement in many projects relating to conservation, support of women in mountain communities, school building in the regions they travel, donations through fundraisers and more.

Helly Hansen’s new Durawool lightweight tops for men and women combine the comfort and performance of wool with the enhanced durability of nylon to create the ideal base layer for staying cool and dry when active outdoors.
Merino wool is an excellent choice for regulating body temperature as it efficiently wicks moisture away from the skin, and the yarn is soft and naturally odor resistant. During the spring and summer when base layers are often exposed as the outer layer, however, they are more prone to wear and tear. By combining ZQ-certified Merino wool and Cordura®, Helly Hansen has created a short sleeve and long sleeve that provides all the benefits of wool along with the added durability of nylon.
“By blending 150g merino wool with Cordura nylon, we combine the soft hand feel from merino while delivering an exceptional durability thanks to the strength of Cordura yarn. Our lab test proved that this fabric is 10 times more resistant to abrasion than a classic 100% merino wool fabric, and it has 1000% higher bursting strength! The wool used in this fabric blend is also ZQ certified, meaning it’s sourced from sheep in the high country of New Zealand and ensuring that it’s high quality and ethically sourced.”
Raglan sleeves and flatlock seams offer additional comfort and freedom of movement. Whether packing for a multiday mission or wanting a piece to transition with you from the mountains to the city, these Durawool styles are a fantastic staple to add to your outdoor wardrobe.
Importance: A layer that adds insulation and warmth, when needed, and is oftentimes used as the outer layer when stronger waterproofing is not necessary.
