At the time, Whistler Mountain has been officially open for 12 years, and the Village as we know it has only just begun being built. Now, fastforward to the current year. As the longest serving real estate company in the community, we have not only maintained our position as the number one real estate brokerage in Whistler-Pemberton, but we are proud to have been an integral part of our town’s development. Despite the valleys and peaks of the ever-changing markets, through building booms, Olympic glory, economic downturns and through a global pandemic, The Whistler Real Estate Company continues to be a locally run company.
With 40 full-time, professional realtors, we pride ourselves on local knowledge that will serve our clients, whether buying or selling. Our market knowledge and expertise, coupled with over 500 years of combined experience, will ensure your real estate transaction is seamless. WHISTLER SOUTH WHERE IT ALL BEGAN
While Whistler Village is the main hub for the majority of the resort’s amenities, Creekside is where this town entered the history books. It’s where the lifts first spun on Whistler Mountain in 1966 with hopes to secure the Winter Olympic Games. In 1989, local ski racer Rob Boyd crossed the finish line at the bottom of Dave Murray Downhill to become the first Canadian to win gold at a World Cup Downhill race on home soil. When the Olympics did arrive in 2010, Creekside base (in particular Dusty’s Bar) was where spectators and fans celebrated long into the night.
“I lived in Nordic Estates for 27 years and I love this location. We have the Valley Trail just over the pedestrian overpass and convenient access to Alta Lake. We are situated between Creekside and the Village making it easy access to shopping, biking trails, skiing and golfing all within minutes.”

The neighborhoods of Whistler South stretch from Nordic (just south of Whistler Village) to the southernmost neighborhoods of Cheakamus Crossing and Function Junction. The choice of homes is equally diverse; cozy condos to stylish chalets, rustic cabins to spacious townhomes and even a gondola-accessed luxury home community!
The newly updated high-speed, ten person Creekside Gondola is one of the main arteries to access Whistler Mountain during ski season and as well as the Whistler Mountain Bike Park during the summer months. The base area is home to cafes, bakeries, a fully-stocked grocery store and a range of boutique retail shops. Two of Whistler’s highest-rated restaurants; Rimrock Cafe and Red Door Bistro are within minutes’ walk of Creekside base, as are green space parks on the shores of Alpha Lake and Nita Lake. A few minutes south on the highway and you can visit craft breweries, art studios and more specialty shops in Function Junction.
There are many reasons why this is one of the fastest-growing areas of Whistler, but the convenience and amenities have always been hard to beat. Southsiders grow prouder of their little slice of Whistler every year.

MERCEDES NICOLL ANGELA DALLAGO
From her start as a skier and figure skater as a child, Mercedes Nicoll picked up snowboarding at the age of 13 and never looked back. Having competed in the halfpipe discipline at four Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Vancouver, Sochi and Pyeongchang, she now lives in Whistler and divides her time between announcing, coaching and hosting her podcast Dropping in.
How early did you feel you had a shot at competing at the Olympics?
I feel like it didn’t become real until I qualified for Team Canada, which was the year leading up to the 2006 Olympics. It had been a goal of mine since 2001. I was training in Chile and there were all these athletes around me trying to make it to the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City. I competed for the next four years with the goal of qualifying, but you don’t know if you’re actually going to the Olympics until two weeks before the event.
What was your standout memory from the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and Whistler?
I’d have to say the crowds. I’ve never been to a competition where the whole city was just so into it. It’s something I’ll never forget. But it wasn’t just Vancouver and Whistler, either. It felt like all of Canada came together. As an athlete, you felt the presence and pride of every Canadian who was there.
Angela Dallago’s first foray into painting was on the tiniest of canvases – human nails. With a knack for colours and paints and an urging from family members, she began to try her hand at larger paintings and discovered her true calling as an abstract artist.
When did you realize that you could go full-time with your art?
My husband and I were building a home and we needed some large pieces of art for our walls. We couldn’t really afford to purchase anything big so my husband said, “let’s see what you can do.” I’m not a landscape artist or anything, but I knew I wanted to try something more abstract. I ended up producing two pieces; a 5’ x 10’ and an 8’ x 3’ for our home and put it on social media for friends and family to see the house. A friend of mine who owns the Adele Campbell art gallery here in Whistler approached me and said, “we have to get these into the gallery.” That sort of kicked it all off.
What’s the biggest inspiration for your work?
I have a strong passion for the ocean and water. In the last couple of years, most of my work has been inspired by aerial views of bodies of water and waves crashing, that sort of thing. I’ll jump on any chance I get to spend time near the ocean, but we don’t get to travel as much as we’d like, so I do look for inspiration from photos online as well. Just in the last six months, I’ve gotten into oil paintings and am drawing inspiration from places like Howe Sound and all the mountains and forests that complement that landscape.
LIVING IN A PAINTING
A MODERN SKI CHALET
When interior designer Mandy Simmons had the opportunity to renovate and design her own modern ski chalet in Whistler, she made sure to take advantage of the prominent views of Rainbow and Sproatt mountains from the site on Sunridge Drive. Enlisting the services of architect Sean Anderson from Progressive Concept Design, the home utilises expansive windows to let in natural light with dark window frames to provide accents and shade.
“The windows create a dramatic effect on the surrounding nature, it looks almost like a painting,” says Simmons. “The colour palette is mostly black and white, which is inspired by how the mountains look in the winter. The design itself inside the house is to create a sense of glamour, elegance and luxury together with a warm, pleasant atmosphere.”
The practical elements of a family home were not ignored, either. A spacious mudroom was designed with both summer and winter activities in mind, with lots of cubbies to store all the gear associated with active Whistler lifestyles.
The ground floor of the home promotes social integration and many of the visual barriers were removed. Only strictly necessary walls from the original home were preserved. The open plan concept extends to the rest of the house with the kitchen, bar area and living room all flowing together as a single space.
“It’s a chic and inviting space that works for quiet contemplation as much as it works for an apres ski party,” says Simmons. “This is a really sought-after layout, it was created with simplicity in mind and something we kept from the original home’s floor plan. The closely-linked combination of functionality and aesthetics of a ski home creates a sense of identity for those living in it.”
Whistler can sometimes feel like you are living in a painting. This ski chalet in Sunridge Plateau raises that painting to the next level of luxury and elegance.
It’s a chic and inviting space that works for quiet contemplation as much as it works for an apres ski party.
WHISTLER CENTRAL
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Whistler was first settled in 1914 by Alex and Myrtle Philip, who together opened the Rainbow Lodge Fishing Resort on the shores of Alta Lake. Guests would arrive every summer by railway and be greeted with views of what would many years later become the separate ski resorts of Whistler and Blackcomb. Today, it is still one of the most desirable places to live in the Whistler valley.
“I have lived in the Whistler Cay neighborhood for the last 17 years and love it! My husband and I have built 2 homes in the area and although there are lots of great neighbourhoods in Whistler, we couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. We love the convenience of being so close to the village, as well the trails, beaches and golf course are literally just out our door. My daughter walks or bikes to the school up the street, making life convenient when you have a busy career! – Marika

A short distance from the Village, the quiet streets and cul-de-sacs of Whistler Central are now home to many local families and second homeowners. The convenience of the Village is a few minutes’ drive or a bike ride away, with lakes, parks and community sports fields even closer.
One of Whistler Central’s most treasured assets is the Valley Trail, a paved network for walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters and cross country skiers. It links the neighborhoods to the Village and the entire Whistler Valley, encircles the Whistler Golf Course and provides quick access to four different parks on the shores of Alta Lake. Whistler Central allows non-motorised transportation to almost every amenity while offering the breathing space one desires when escaping into the mountains.
Much of the inventory is detached houses, ranging from modest log homes to expansive chalets and waterfront properties on the shores of Alta Lake.
A secluded retreat that’s never far from the action, Whistler Central really does offer the best of both worlds.

AFTER
A CLASSIC INVIGORATING RE- BEFORE
Classic 80s era houses are still in abundance throughout the Whistler valley, harkening back to a time of neon-clad skiers, fixed-grip chairlifts and rapid resort growth. As nostalgic as these dwellings are, many have seen almost a half-century of Whistler winters. So when Tim Regan—Whistler local, and principal of award-winning homebuilder Vision Pacific—decided he wanted to breathe some new life into a tired 1983 house on Balsam Way, he approached the project pragmatically.
“The bones of the house have to be good,” says Regan. “These houses are tricky because you don’t want to get into a renovation where the costs start to get to a point where it’s cheaper to buy a home and knock down the existing structure.”
But cleaning out and replacing much of the existing interior and exterior of the house was just the beginning. A whole second renovation added a garage, mudroom and office, increasing the liveable amenities and square footage.
“It was a very cute house so we carried as much of its original character as we could,” says Regan. “These old houses tend to be quite dark, even with ceilings with generous height. While our additions actually lowered the ceiling height slightly, adding pot lights into the ceiling finish made it feel like a larger space. The house is much brighter and warmer as a result.”
Regan wanted to make the house feel like an efficient, modern build while maintaining its existing character, as well as removing what he described as “some funky odours” that permeated the original build. This required stripping down the interior to the studs, fixing any electrical issues, installing Outsulation and triple pane windows, residing the house and upgrading the roof.
In terms of exterior aesthetics, the desire was to make any renovations feel like they’ve always been a part of the original structure. While contemporary flat roof homes create more vertical space on the top floor, it won’t necessarily fit with the rest of the house.
“I’m a bit of an architectural purist,” says Regan. “I wanted the roofline addition to be a mirror of the existing house so it didn’t look like it was bolted on. Visually, with anything we added, you wouldn’t know from a glance that it wasn’t part of the original house.”
Whistler is a very different place than it was in the ‘80s, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hold onto some of its classic character with home renovations.
It was a very cute house so we carried as much of its original character as we could.

UNDERSTANDING WHISTLER’S PHASE 1 & PHASE 2 PROPERTY COVENANTS
If you are considering purchasing a property in Whistler as an investment opportunity with the intention of renting it out, you will encounter some unique property covenants designed to bolster the supply of tourist accommodations in Whistler. Two key designations you will need to know and understand the difference between are Phase 1 and Phase 2 properties. While Phase 1 and Phase 2 property types have some general rules that apply to them, there are always nuances and exceptions to those rules, so it is important to work with a local agent to help you navigate the landscape.
WHISTLER PHASE 1 PROPERTIES
With a Phase 1 property in Whistler, the owner has unlimited use. Generally speaking, this means the owners can occupy the property year-round or can choose to rent it out either long-term or on a nightly basis. Phase 1 properties are typically townhouses and some condos found in larger condo buildings throughout Whistler Village and the Benchlands. Based on the details of the covenants, if the property is not owner-occupied it may need to be made available for rental. Something else to consider in this situation is that the Strata rules may also require you to use a particular rental management company.
PHASE 2 PROPERTY QUICK FACTS
More restrictive than Phase 1
Basic allotment for personal use of the property is up to 28 days in the summer season and up to 28 days in the winter season
When not in owner user, the units must be available for commercial rental
LOOKING TO PURCHASE AN INVESTMENT PROPERTY IN WHISTLER?
Contact one of our Whistler Real Estate Company agents to learn more.
PHASE 1 PROPERTY QUICK FACTS
– You can occupy the property on a full-time basis
– You can rent the property on a monthly basis
– You can rent the property on a nightly basis (ie. Airbnb)
WHISTLER PHASE 2 PROPERTIES
Phase 2 property usage is much more restrictive than the use of Phase 1 properties. The owner is restricted in usage to 28 days in summer and 28 days in winter. How and when the property can be used, including the potential for additional owner use, is detailed in the covenants. The owner owns the full property but must book their personal use days in advance and place the property in the integrated rental pool which is managed according to the strata and chosen rental management company for the rest of the time. Phase 2 properties are typically located in hotel complexes for example: The Four Seasons Resort Whistler, The Westin, Whistler Village Delta Inn and Suites, and the Pan Pacific hotels, to name a few.
Phase 2 properties are generally considered commercial ventures and are taxed at a commercial rate. You will need to check with each individual property to find out if the revenues are pooled (all the property) or individual. Similar-looking properties will have a large variation in price depending on how the rental contract works and how much revenue is left at the end of each year for the owners.

WHISTLER OLYMPIC HISTORY
One question that we often get asked at the Whistler Museum is “Was the Whistler Village built for the Olympics?” While it is true that the development of Whistler Mountain began in the 1960s with a dream of hosting Olympic Games, the Whistler Village was designed and constructed well before any Olympic bid involving Whistler was successful. However, three earlier plans to build a town centre in the Whistler area were proposed by the Garibaldi Olympic Development Association (GODA) and predated the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), which was formed in 1975. These plans were purpose designed to host the Olympic Winter Games and look a little different from the village we know today.
1968 Olympic Winter Games
GODA first put forth an Olympic bid in 1963, with hopes of hosting the 1968 Olympic Winter Games. At the time, they proposed to build a town centre at the base of the lifts planned for Whistler Mountain, today’s Creekside. This bid was not successful, mainly because in 1963 there was still no highway, power station, or ski runs or lifts, but this idea of a planned town centre continued to be developed by further bids.
1972 Olympic Winter Games
GODA next submitted a bid to host the 1972 Olympic Winter Games in 1968. By this time, the province had extended Highway 99 from Squamish north to the Whistler area and Whistler Mountain had been operating for two full seasons. The plans from this bid placed the town centre at the same location as today’s Whistler Village. According to a painting of the proposed development, this town centre would have included a large plaza area with a view of the proposed ski jumps on Whistler Mountain, an airport, and a landing area for helicopters, as well as lodgings and retail spaces.
Like the bid for 1968, this bid was unsuccessful, in part because Whistler had not yet become firmly established as a ski resort.
1976 Olympic Winter Games
By 1970, however, when GODA was putting forth a bid for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games, Whistler Mountain had become better known and the available amenities had increased significantly since 1963. Garibaldi/ Vancouver was selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee as Canada’s official national bid for 1976 and a full International Olympic Committee (IOC) bid was developed. This has left behind lots of official material that gives insight into the Canadian Olympic organizers and their vision of the Whistler area as an Olympic venue, including architectural drawings for a proposed town centre in the official 1976 Vancouver/Garibaldi bid book.
WHISTLER REAL ESTATE
1976 According to the bid book, a prominent selling point for this proposal was the idea of a single-host area, with events for all ten disciplines held within four kilometres of the town centre at the base of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. As well as the events that Whistler hosted in 2010, facilities would also have been built for figure skating, ice hockey, and speed skating.
The town centre envisioned in the bid book is not too different from the 1972 bid. Ski Jump Plaza provided views of the ski jumps on Whistler Mountain and was accessible through a pedestrian concourse. The concourse was lined on either side by tall, angular buildings and lifts began at the concourse to carry skiers and spectators up the hill. Close by was an ice rink, biathlon course and other Olympic venues.
The proposed development for the 1976 Games looks different from the village that was planned by the RMOW just a few years later, but certain elements, such as a focus on pedestrians and lift access to Whistler Mountain, are defining features of the village we know today.
Though GODA’s bid for the 1976 Olympic Winter Games was promising, Vancouver/Garibladi ended up being taken out of the running because the IOC chose Montreal to host the Olympic Summer Games in 1976.
1980, 1988 & 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games
GODA submitted two subsequent bids to host the Games in 1980 and 1988. However, it was not until a bid was developed for Vancouver and Whistler to cohost the Games in 2010 that a bid involving the Whistler area proved successful, by which time the Whistler Village that we know today had been constructed. While not all events of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games were held within Whistler, multiple facilities were built here for the 2010 Games. The Whistler Sliding Centre on Blackcomb Mountain hosted bobsleigh, skeleton and luge events while Nordic and ski jump events were held at the Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley. The Whistler Athletes Village constructed in Cheakamus became the beginnings of the Cheakamus Crossing neighbourhood after housing the competing teams in the 2010 Games came to an end. Within Whistler Village, Celebration Plaza hosted medal ceremonies and concerts. Today, Celebration Plaza has been redeveloped as the popular Olympic Plaza and is the only part of the Whistler Village that was built specifically because of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
WHISTLER NORTH
WHERE LOCALS LOVE TO LIVE
A few minutes’ drive north of the Village and it soon becomes apparent why so many homeowners chose to settle in this part of the Whistler Valley. Quiet streets wind their way up the mountainside and along the shores of the glacier-fed Green Lake. The homes themselves boast some of the most picturesque vistas in the Sea to Sky Corridor, the peaks of Whistler, Blackcomb and Wedge mountains towering above the valley floor and bathing in an orange alpenglow in the evenings.
“We chose to live in Alpine Meadows almost 30 years ago. It is a great family neighbourhood with Meadow Park Rec Centre close by and one of the elementary schools a short bike ride away. Most of all, we wanted the kids to be able to get to school on their own once at Whistler Secondary School. The neighbourhood has only gotten better over the years!” – Jill

ALEX FELL JENNA JONES
For Alex Fell, the desire to stay embedded in skiing and ski racing has trumped most of his career decisions. From his time in the gates as a youth to working his way up to offers of career coaching opportunities and eventually earning his Master of Physical Therapy at the University of British Columbia, Fell has always felt the draw to the mountains and continues to serve the high-performance skiers and athletes that live there.
How long have you had The Movement Lab?
Just over two years now. We are by far the newest game in town with respect to physio clinics and rehab centers. I traveled as a coach and for so many years as a team Physiotherapist with Canada’s national alpine and freestyle ski programs. After the 2016 season, I decided it was time to reduce my international work and travel and stay home in Whistler and pursue more family time. After establishing myself in private practice, I decided to open my own space that I could design in my own vision of what a physio clinic could be. I like to think we built a place that would give the highest level of care to the local population.
What drives Whistler’s very high standard of practicing physiotherapists?
I think the standard was established by the early practitioners in town. Many of them would treat elite-level athletes and travel with the ski teams during their season, which comes with some high expectations of the quality of care. That’s perpetuated over the years and the locals have really benefited from it. When the recreation-obsessed locals walk through the door with an injury, they want to get back to their sport as quickly as possible and they’ve come to expect that high standard of care themselves.
Having worked as a massage therapist for the Vancouver Canucks and Cirque du Soleil, Jenna Jones’ experience as a healer has heavily influenced her creative world as an artist. Jenna believes there’s nothing better than making other people feel good. Her art helps her accomplish that.
Tell us about Héritage, the legacy art you create.
It started after my husband’s mother passed. We had received her ashes and were trying to figure out what was the best way to honour her legacy. Neither of us resonated with an urn, she was such an expressive woman and really wasn’t someone we figured should be bottled up. When I saw the ashes for the first time, I realized they were almost identical to the sediments I’d been working with. I asked my husband if we could try making art with her ashes and he was on board. From there it was word of mouth from friends and family members who had also had recent losses of loved ones or pets. I create this memorial artwork to see the silver lining in loss. It’s a new natural approach to honour and celebrate beautiful lives well lived.
How does living in Whistler inspire your creativity?
I love keeping my art and my soul as close to nature as much as I possibly can. The nature and the people here help create that connection to this beautiful British Columbia landscape that we all get to call home. Being able to share that through art is such a wonderful feeling.

ALEX MCNIL AND ANNA RONAYNE SARA STIEL
Alex McNeil and his wife Anna have always enjoyed spending time on the road in Canada. Originally from the UK, they began exploring BC camping in tents before driving across Canada in a Chevy Astro. A design engineer by trade, Alex has applied his design skills to vehicle conversions and he and his wife Anna now run a busy business converting vans for both livability and adventure.
How does your custom van conversion business work?
Alex: Our process is a bit different from other van conversion companies around. We really focus on the Engineering aspect by building out models on the computer, working with data that we have from Ford and Mercedes. We build a series of modules and kits that we work from so when a customer comes to us, we’re able to render what the finished product is going to look like. We then take that Computer Aided Design work and start building custom parts on a CNC machine.
Are there any trends in campervan designs that people are currently gravitating towards?
Anna: We’re seeing a lot of people who want their vans to be able to explore further outside. They want to bring their mountain bikes and skis, but they also want a cozy little home on wheels. We focus a lot on interior design for that feeling of comfort when you’re spending a lot of time inside the van, but also the versatility to explore everything that BC has to offer.

Growing up in the community of Walkerville near Mount Currie, Sara Stiel came up through Whistler Blackcomb’s ski school program before joining the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and beginning her racing career at 11 years old. For the last two years since the 11th grade, she has boarded at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont, combining her schooling with training and ski racing. Sara now attends Burke Mountain Academy as a postgraduate, skiing full-time and preparing for another busy season of racing with the support of local restaurant Hy’s Steakhouse.
What’s it like to have your schooling revolve around skiing? It’s an interesting concept actually. All the kids are really hardworking and it’s nice to be around like-minded athletes. We have a prep period in the summer and fall of just working out, sometimes three times a day. We also play soccer against the other academies in our region. We’ll travel to Europe twice before we start racing to train on the glaciers. School and skiing then happen over three trimesters.
What do you love to ski when you’re at home?
I love doing GS turns down The Saddle when it’s running fast. But I like to ski powder as much as possible when I’m home because we don’t get much of a chance for it the rest of the year. Spanky’s Ladder and the Gemstone Bowls are some of my favourite memories of freeskiing with my dad when I was younger, so I like to get back there as much as I can on powder days.

DEREK CATHERS IRA PETTLE
FORMER HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN, REPAIRMAN AND JACK OF ALL TRADES
Hailing from Vancouver Island where he earned his Red Seal as a technician servicing forestry equipment, a young Derek Cathers sent out resumes across the province for his next life move. After spending a single day in Whistler, to no one’s surprise, he decided this was the town where he wanted to live. After working with fleet maintenance on Whistler Blackcomb’s snowcats for over a decade he decided he wanted to own his own business, which he now operates as Advantage Repairs.
What do you like most about being a versatile repairman rather than a specialized tradesperson?
One advantage of my experience is that I’ve worked on such a broad variety of stuff, that I have gained the experience to service not only machinery, but it has also allowed me to shift my business and skillset to household maintenance, renovations and repairs. I had such an interest in pulling things apart to see how they work, and I found I really enjoyed fixing things to help people out. When something’s been broken for months, you really get to make someone’s day when you fix it.
What’s the most common callout you get for Advantage Repairs?
Rentals are quite a big market because landlords and property managers usually need someone in quick for things like a broken faucet or a hole in the drywall. The other callout I generally get these days is from realtors who are getting houses ready for sale. I love doing that detail work where I get in and make something function better and look better. If the project requires specialist contractors like electricians or plumbers, I’ll do all the painting that is required when the project is done.
A mainstay of Whistler’s now-thriving performing arts scene, Ira Pettle first came to Whistler in 2009 with what was meant to be a one-day visit. Thirteen years later, he’s Whistler’s go-to guy when it comes to performing arts programming, theatre productions, and of course, entertaining Whistler locals and visitors alike.
How have you seen the arts scene in Whistler develop over your years here?
When I first arrived, the arts scene was fairly small. The 2010 Olympics were coming and Whistler was primed for the world stage. I remember feeling a great potential for who I could become here and I was instantly inspired to get involved, performing on the Village Stroll at Family Apres, a municipally funded program that gave me my first stage to play on. From there, the hotels started hiring me to entertain their guests while the local community began to call on me, not only for entertainment, but music, improv, and acting classes for the kids. As it was all unfolding for me, I felt the undertones of an arts renaissance happening in Whistler and now, with more opportunity and funding, that development feels well underway.
What do you think has made the Whistler arts scene as successful as it has been?
Organization and sheer passion, with increased funding, opportunity, and community support, they all work together to elevate the arts in Whistler. It is the leaders and the creative trailblazers, the community at large and the municipal government that really make the arts in Whistler possible. Find Ira online | www.irapettle.com
