WRITING COMPETITION! There is a writing competition now open to gather more tales for the book from local writers. Stories of 1000 words or less should be e-mailed to info@electragladepress.com and marked as ‘Whitby Stories’ in the subject bar.

The closing date for the competition is Sept 1st 2016. The chosen stories cannot be paid for but the selected writers will receive 3 copies of the publication, will retain full copyright of their story and will be invited to read their tale at the Whitby launch of the fundraising book. STRANGE WHITBY TALES....

The Blue Lady The White House Inn is on the fringe of Whitby, perched on the cliffs, overlooking the sea and beautiful Sandsend down the coast. Once, the building was a fine home for a family of the local gentry. Rebuilt in the 19th Century, and modernised internally since, it is a lovely place, with its restaurant, spectacular views and ever-friendly bar staff. Who would have thought that a place so grand could be the home of a whole colony of ghosts? Perhaps the best known of The White House ghosts is The Blue Lady, also known as The Rustler. She drifts about the rooms and gardens of the house, pausing before the windows, peering in or peeping out, the rustling of her silk dress alarming anyone who happens to be about. A passionate Belgian Duchess, Sophia Hertzenbaugh, is the alleged human source of this troubled but harmless sprite. Sophia was held prisoner at The White House during the Napoleonic wars. She happened to be touring the area with her entourage at the outbreak of war. She was taken into protective custody, her fellow travellers and servants, of lower social orders, imprisoned in the dungeons at York. Sophia’s English was good but she had a certain give-away accent which meant that if allowed to travel on she would have aroused suspicion as a possible spy and thus placed herself in danger amidst the ever patriotic Yorkshire folk. The Duchess was said to have been a lover of Napoleon himself, and often sent letters abroad addressed to Mon Monsieur Bonaparte. Being of the genteel class, she was made ‘house-guest’ of The White House’s owner at that time, Lord Chapperman, who lived down the coast in a grand hall, also now a hotel, that for reasons of hostelry rivalry must remain nameless here. Sophia had free range of The White House halls and gardens but was instructed not to leave the grounds. Lord Chapperman was something of what we now call a ‘love rat’. Though married, he liked to flirt and rumple with his maids, cooks and delivery girls. Some say he seduced Lady Sophia - others declare that, lonely and bored, she decided to toy with him. Whatever the dynamics of the liaison, the result was the same – his wife found out and demanded that Lady Sophia be banished from The Whitehouse. The accounts of her demise are varied and confusing. One version has her desperate and discarded by

the man she had fallen head over heels for, running from The Whitehouse in her blue silk dress with the curses of his jealous wife in her ears. She ran toward the nearby cliffs, pausing only once to shriek out a blood-curdling scream before plunging to her doom in the foaming ocean. Another version has her sitting in her attic window, looking out and seeing Lord Chapperman pass by arm in arm with his beautiful wife and their three pretty little children. Knowing that such marital bliss could never be her destiny, with either Chapperman or Napoleon, Sophia hung herself from an oak tree in The White House gardens, her final lonely gaze cast back toward the house facade with its jumble of windows. The Blue Lady is a harmless ghost: she only looks and stares, never tries to frighten or interfere. She does not break plates or rattle doorknobs, or awaken children to terrifying screams after a short, sharp whisper in their ear. She simply drifts around the grounds and corridors, the whisper and rustle of her silk dress often heard even when she is not seen. If you do happen to be lucky enough to be visiting The White House Inn, and if you do see the faint form of a fine lady drifting toward you in the evening gloom, please nod and smile a hello and perhaps give her a little wave. For she is lonely. She is so bored and so lonely as she awaits the end of the stupid war, and for the letter that will summon her back to her true love, her Little Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. Laminitis: what lies beneath The Beck Veterinary Practice Laminitis is inflammation of the sensitive laminae in the equine hoof. Laminae hold the pedal bone and hoof wall together. Laminitis can cause irreversible pedal bone dropping and rotation, ultimately leading to euthanasia in severe cases. Laminitis is often caused by an underlying disease, which is important to identify when managing cases. The two main underlying causes are Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID) or Cushings. PPID is caused by over activity of the pituitary gland in the brain, resulting in an increased production of certain hormones, including adrenocortotropic hormone (ACTH). Clinical signs include any of the following: •

Excessive hair growth / curly coat / retaining long hairs / abnormal colour

•

Increased sweating even without a coat chang

•

Increased drinking and urination

•

Lethargy

•

Diagnosis is usually made on an ACTH blood sample by your vet and a clinical examination. Treatment can successfully reduce the incidence of laminitis. EMS animals are often overweight and have laminitic episodes. EMS occurs from a combination of genetic and environmental factors such as lush grazing and concentrate intake. Once diagnosed by blood sample, it can be controlled with a combination of medication and weight management. If you suspect your horse has laminitis, call the vet immediately. If the horse is able to walk, remove them from pasture, place on a deep bed, ensuring access to soaked hay and water. Currently the lab fee for ACTH sampling is FREE. STRUGGLING TO GET A FOOT ONTO THE PROPERTY LADDER?..

A few years ago, when the country was wallowing in recession, first time buyers became about as extinct as the dinosaurs! Preparing to buy your first home could mean paying a fortune in rent, whilst trying to save up a large deposit, and playing catch-up with steadily rising house prices. Not easy!

Thankfully the situation is now looking a lot brighter for people looking to purchase for the first time, and a range of Government Schemes now mean that potential buyers can do so with as little as a 5% deposit. Interest rates on high loanto value mortgages have fallen, making mortgage repayments more affordable and leaving more money for people to repay capital. There has also been high competition among lenders, resulting in increasingly attractive deals. With the gap between the cost of paying mortgage interest and renting growing increasingly wider – now is the time to buy. Help-to-buy schemes have helped to kick start the mortgage market. The ‘Help to buy ISA’ allows prospective first time buyers to have their savings boosted, by the government, by 25%. The maximum bonus you can receive is £3,000. The ‘Help to Buy Equity Loan’ is a ‘leg up’ for those looking to buy a newly built property. The government will lend the buyer 20% of the cost of your newly built home, so only 5% cash deposit and a 75% mortgage are needed to make up the rest. It may seem like madness but but being a good saver, and never borrowing, does nothing for your credit score. Your credit rating is, obviously, very important when applying for mortgage finance so getting a credit card and keeping up with the payments is a good idea. Also checking your credit score on a website like ‘Experian’ around 6 months before you start house-hunting is

advisable (this gives you time to make sure any inaccuracies on the file are corrected) GET ON THE ELECTORAL REGISTER

If you do not have a permanent address registered, and therefore the ability to vote, this can shave valuable points off your credit score. Move around a lot? - then register at your most permanent base (or even at your parent’s address) FIND OUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN BORROW

The time to do this is before you begin searching for a property so as to not over-stretch yourself. Online mortgage calculators can give you a very rough idea of what you may be able to lend, but speaking with a mortgage advisor will result in having a very clear picture of what you maybe able to borrow based on your savings and income. Being able to boast that you have mortgage finance ‘Agreed in Principle’, when you make your first offer, will make your bid all the more attractive to the vendor. FACTOR IN ADDITIONAL COSTS

This may be stating the obvious but – it costs a lot of money to move house!
