Hello and welcome to the September edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you are having a great summer and that you will enjoy this new edition of the Whitby Advertiser, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker who has picked up the copy of our magazine. The school holidays are now coming to an end and once again it has been a fantastic summer in our wonderful town, though the weather has been a rather mixed bag at times, with the long heatwaves forecasted earlier in the year not materialising. Sadly, the Regatta weekend, which also saw the start of Whitby Folk Week was pretty wet at times, As I am writing this, the Folk Week is now in full force and hopefully the weather will become more settled as the week continues We have been busy at the Whitby Advertiser over the summer months. We have increased our distribution to 23,000 copies by expanding our doorto-door delivery network, and increasing the number of copies available on our dedicated stand at the front of the Whitby Co-op, so visitors to the store can pick up a copy when they pop in for lunch or newspaper, or to do their weekly shop. In August, over 2,000 copies were picked up instore and we are grateful to the store manager Dennis Gilroy for accommodating our stand in his busy store. This month, our magazine boasts 96 pages, and within you can find adverts for businesses both new and long established, interesting editorials from our advertisers, and of course our ever-popular prize crossword which is sponsored by he Hare & Hounds at Hawsker who have kindly donated a Sunday lunch for two for our lucky winner! It’s a truly brilliant prize so come on, what are you waiting for? Grab a cuppa and pen, put your feet up and get your thinking cap on, and you could soon be enjoying a fabulous free Sunday lunch! HOLMANS WIN PRESTIGIOUS RETAS 2016 AWARD

Holmans Bookshop of Skinner Street, Whitby, are the proud winners of the RETAS 2016 award for the Best Independent Bookstore Retailer of Independent Cards. RETAS are the only awards that celebrate greeting card retailing in the UK. Launched by Progressive Greetings magazine in 2005, they are in recognition of the tremendous contribution that retailers both large and small, make to the success of the greeting card industry. Now in their twelfth year, the RETAS Awards bring together the entire greeting card industry, recognising and celebrating the top independent and multiple greeting card retailers regionally and nationally, as well as a new generation of retailers and employees of outstanding excellence. The current owner of Holmans, Angela O’Connor, accepted the “Oscar” style award at the Dorchester

Hotel on 13 July. It is now displayed in the shop’s window. Holmans was established in 1923 and Angela took over the reins in 2014. “I have tried to maintain the excellent range of products and customer service that Holmans have delivered for over 90 years”. Since taking over the business, the shop’s opening times have been extended to 6.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday and 7.00am to 12.30pm on Sundays. As well as the dedicated card department, which is situated in the basement, the shop also offers newspapers, magazines, stationery, art supplies, jigsaws, toys and books. “I was pleased to receive such a prestigious award on behalf of the team at Holmans and look forward to celebrating the shop’s 100th birthday in 2023”.

Coverdales have been operating in Whitby since the 1970s. Its owners, Simon and Lisa Oxby are now changing the way in which they operate their business. Having recently sold the huge freehold warehouse and showroom premises on Whitby Business Parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fairfield Way, the business now runs from storage units situated at the rear of these premises.

Rather than operating like a traditional store, collections can now only be made by prior telephone call and trading is mainly now via our free delivery service, direct to customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s premises. All orders can be placed by phone or email. Coverdales have invested money into a new, large delivery van to carry stock and deliver to most areas within the day and a new computerised accounts system, which allows stock to be sold direct from the van and an

invoice to be raised on an iPad. Cash or card payment facilities are available.

Coverdales have introduced many new product lines,including a new range of quality paper napkins and food packaging items. There are also new cleaning products that incorporate dosing systems to ensure efficient cleaning performance whilst controlling costs. ITS TIME TO HAVE YOUR FLU VACCINE VACCINATION AGAINST SEASONAL INFLUENZA

• The time of year has arrived to remind those readers who might be at particular risk about the importance of having an annual flu vaccination • The single vaccine will give protection against both swine flu and the usual seasonal flu.

• This vaccination is a safe and effective preventative treatment with very few side effects.

• Local GP Practices are offering this vaccination to the most vulnerable people who are at particular risk of the complications of influenza, which can result in very serious illness and hospital admission.

THE VULNERABLE GROUPS INCLUDE • All people aged over 65 years

• All patients between 6 months and 65 who suffer from Diabetes, Long–standing chest problems (including any patient with asthma who requires inhaled steroids or steroid tablets), Heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease and those disabled by stroke or other disease of the nervous system. Those whose immune system is suppressed by disease or treatment and all pregnant women • Children aged 2 – 18 years who have long term health conditions will be offered a nasal spray flu vaccine instead of the injection

WHITBY PREPARES FOR PIRATE INVASION!

Whitby town centre is preparing for the pirates invasion again! The annual Whitby Pirate Festival is now entering its 9th year. On the 9th 10th & 11th September, hundreds of pirates, young and old, will plunder the streets of Whitby, all in aid of the RNLI! The Whitby International Pirate Society (WhIPS),who are well-known around the area for their fundraising work all year round, and are the Organising Committee for the festival. We have been running charity events since 2004. “Whitby Lifeboat plays a crucial part in the safety of this busy coast and we want to play our part in supporting it . There is something for everyone”; This year will see, live music, best dressed pirate,best dressed business, Custom Bike Show, children’s activities, stalls and more! All proceeds of the event go directly to the Whitby RNLI, we don’t take a

STRANGE WHITBY TALES....

The Blue Silk Shawl In days past, Whitby had its share of smugglers and pirates. One especially ugly pirate, who was the captain of his own ship, was successful enough to be considered a good catch by the local young lasses. Despite his challenging appearance, the pirate married the most beautiful girl in Whitby. They were something of a contrasting couple. She was tall and slender - he was short and fat; she was graceful and beautiful - he was as ugly as a donkey. She, however, was penniless and shared a yard hovel with her extended family - he was rich and had a large house on top of the cliffs. They met, he wooed her, she was charmed seemed besotted. Within a month they were wed. Although from a poor family, the new bride had the elegance and expensive tastes of a fine lady. She could see that her man was ugly, knew that he had a murderous heart, but she realised that he could provide her with a good house, nice clothes, not to mention the beautiful jewellery he always brought home from his ‘excursions’. Though she just about tolerated him, he loved and adored her and, as they say, worshipped the ground taht she walked on. During one raid at sea the pirate took over a ship which was carrying a wealthy female passenger. She was wearing a beautiful blue silk shawl. After carefully removing the shawl and her jewels the pirate ignored her pleas for mercy, hacked her into pieces and threw her overboard, along with the rest of the ship’s passengers and crew.

Three weeks later, upon their return to Whitby, the crew divided up their piles of plunder. The ugly pirate made sure that he kept the silk shawl. He knew it would be the perfect present for his wife, the blue of the silk being a match for her own shining eyes. He arrived home with his trunks and baggage and after the usual grilling about where had he been and what had he been up to, he presented his wife with jewellery and perfumes. From inside his tunic he drew out the delicate shawl and handed it to her with a comic bow. Delighted with the softness and fine embroidery of the garment, she hurried into her dressing room to try it 40

on. She threw it over her pretty shoulders and posed before the full length mirror, looking up to see if the blue silk set off her eyes. To her horror, the reflection gazing back at her was not her own, but a hideous, mutilated face. She did not realise it, but glowering back at her was the face of the very lady her husband had so cruelly butchered when stealing the shawl. The poor woman had been dead in the water for weeks, her sword hacked face white and bloated and nibbled by fish. The pirate’s wife shrieked in horror. She flung the shawl to the ground and fled from the house, thinking that the garment was somehow cursed and had made her face a ghastly mess. Grinding poverty and a fat, ugly husband she could have coped with, but not the loss of her looks. She ran screaming to the cliff edge, the baffled pirate scuttling after her, wondering what the problem was, thinking that his wife was somewhat over-reacting if she did not find the shawl to her taste. His horrormaddened wife raced straight over the cliff edge, plummeting to the sea below, where she was dashed against the rocks and sucked under by the treacherous currents. The poor pirate was heart-broken, for a while. His wife’s body had been washed out to sea and was never found. He had no idea why she had run out screaming and flung herself over the cliff, for all he had seen in the mirror was the reflection of her delightful face. After a suitable period of mourning, he packed her jewellery and treasures up into a wooden chest and folded the blue silk shawl over the top, thinking what a lovely set of presents he already had to give to his next bride. He was certain that there would be a new bride. He was hard-working, good at his job and so a good catch. He was sure that there would be another Whitby girl beside him on their wedding day, looking ever so lovely in the blue silk shawl. Chris Firth © 2016

LAST MINUTE VIEWINGS GUIDE AVOID THE STRESS! Many sellers have been there – you get a call from your Estate Agent saying ‘Can a prospective buyer please view tomorrow morning?’ The windows need a clean, the floor needs a hoover and the kids have left toys everywhere. Difficult isn’t it? Do you say no and risk losing a viewing, or say yes and worry that your home doesn’t look quite its best? It is always best to be a flexible as possible when it comes to viewings. Many agents work hard to give at least 24 hours notice but requests can be lastminute. Here are a few quick tips for getting ‘viewing ready’ in no time at all: Buy 4 cardboard boxes: The kids room – label a cardboard box with their names. Pile all their toys which are lying around on the floor into the box and hide it in the wardrobe. You only have to worry about making the bed in the morning now! The teenagers room – If getting your teenager to tidy their room has become a lost cause, then scoop up any clothes, and other items which are lying about, making sure dressing tables and bedside cabinets are clear and place it all into a labelled box. Open the curtains and throw open the windows (weather permitting) before a viewing. General clutter – Walk around the rest of your house. What could be removed to make it look tidier? Shoes in the hallway, pets bedding, paperwork left on the side? Pop it all into a box marked ‘general’ and things should now be looking a lot neater. Home staging kit – Now your home looks clutterfree, it’s time to quickly ‘dress’ it. A box containing luxury cushions, fresh matching towels and lovely toiletries is the way forward. Now dress (your property) to impress! Popping some flowers into a vase, and filling your fruit bowl up, will add a splash of colour. If you want to go that extra mile a bottle of wine out on the kitchen top with a couple of glasses, dining table laid out as if you’re ready to entertain, a soft throw laid over the bed - all little touches but make your viewers imagine themselves living in the house. I read an interesting article recently about what potential buyers are actually looking at when they’re

walking around a house. Research found this is what your viewers have their eyes on: Windows – many are looking at the views, surroundings/neighbourhood through the windows so a quick clean of the glass, and the ledges, to make them sparkle is advisable. Larger storage cupboards – to see what size they are. Viewers are much less likely to open wardrobes – so pop anything you want to hide in your wardrobes rather than filling up your cupboards. Features – such as fireplaces. So make sure to show them at their best Ceilings – the research found people are looking upwards to check out ceiling height, light fittings and cornices etc. Where as floors, and surfaces, only get a quick glance. So with a short time to clean and tidy, prioritising is key. There’s no point spending hours cleaning inside the oven (they’re not likely to open it) and neglecting more important areas. ADDER BITES IN DOGS

The Adder is the only venomous snake native to the UK. Adults are around 50-60cm long and are characterised by having a black/brown zigzag pattern along their back and V shaped marking on the back of the head. They are commonly found on sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorland and woodland edges, particularly in the South of Britain and on the North Yorkshire Moors. Snakes generally only bite in self-defence, so normally bites occur when a snake is stepped on or disturbed by an inquisitive dog. Bites are more frequent in the spring and late summer, especially September. This is when the snakes are more active and can sometimes be spotted basking in the sun. Adder bites result in swelling that is often dark coloured and can become severe depending on how the dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immune system reacts. You may be able to see 2 small puncture wounds in the centre of the swelling. Bites most commonly occur on a dogâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legs or face. Your dog will show signs of pain and may appear nervous. Other signs include pale gums, bruising, salivation/ dribbling, vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration, restlessness,

drowsiness and lethargy. Eventually animals may collapse, have blood clotting problems, tremors or convulsions. Bites on or around the face can lead to swelling of the face and muzzle and result in breathing difficulties. Seek veterinary attention and call us as soon as possible if you think your dog may have been bitten. The sooner treatment is received, the quicker and more likely it is that your dog will recover. Carry your dog if possible, or at least keep him on the lead, to try and reduce the spread of venom around his body. Bathe the wound in cold water to help control the swelling and keep your dog quiet and warm as you transport him to the veterinary hospital. Treatment can include pain relief, treatment of swelling and shock and the administration of anti-venom. Most cases survive with appropriate treatment. But remember, prevention is better then cure; be vigilant and make sure your dog is under control when out and about on the moors. Many moorland areas also have sheep and nesting birds residing there and require dogs to be on leads anyway.
