Well, the months are certainly flying by this year and here I am once again welcoming you to the latest issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine regarded as the number one choice for advertising here in Whitby and the surrounding district. Yes, it’s a new month and it is July, the midsummer month when the weather gets hotter (allegedly!) and less work gets done as many of us take our annual vacation. Kids rejoice and cheer because school is out (remember that 60s song by Gary US Bonds?) and huge crowds descend on Whitby to enjoy all that the town and surrounding area has to offer. Once again, you will find that our magazine is supported by a great range of advertisers offering a variety services to everyone, making our publication essential reading whether you are a resident, business owner, visitor or holidaymaker. Details of upcoming events and activities are in our comprehensive What’s On guide, and our Dining Out guide is full of ideas and great meal deals if you are looking to eat out. The prize in our ever-popular prize crossword is a £25 store kindly been donated by that most splendid and dapper chap Nick Henderson at Hendersons Sales and Lettings Agents. What more can I say except pour yourself a nice cold beer, glass of wine, or whatever tipple takes your fancy, park yourself on the patio or in some local beer garden and enjoy reading this latest issue of the Whitby Advertiser! Speaking of events and holidays, I need not mention that 4 July is Independence Day in America, and no other day is more significant than this on the American holiday calendar as the country celebrates the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a declaration which proclaimed to the world the emergence of a new sovereign nation as the continent separated from Great Britain, the British having ruled over it since the 16th Century. significant days on the American calendar that caught my eye, and all centre around food: National Gingersnap Day (July 1), National Fried Chicken Day (July 6), National Ice Cream Day (July 21) and National Hot Dog Day (July 25). Moving away from America and food, we find that World UFO Day is celebrated on July 2, Stay Out of the Sun Day on July 3 (could be a bit of a non-starter here in the UK if the weather is similar to what it was mid-June!), International Free Hugs Day on July 6;, Elderly Men Day on July 15 (celebrated in Kiribati), and my favourite has to be ... wait for it... National Sleepy Head Day which is celebrated in Finland on July 27! Here in the Whitby Advertiser office, you won’t find any sleepy heads as we are always wide-awake and alert, out and about in the area and on the phone engaging with business owners old and new who wish to advertise with us, as well as seeking out events, articles and competitions to fill our magazine each month. We recently celebrated our 13th birthday and I would personally like to thank all our advertisers and readers for your continued support. Following on from Rabbit Awareness Week last week I thought it would be a good idea to refresh our knowledge on rabbit care! The RSPCA estimate that there are 1.5 million pet rabbits in the UK, they come in a variety of breeds, shapes and sizes but generally need similar care. They are highly intelligent little animals and owning them can be extremely rewarding. They can become part of the family but, as sensitive animals, are best suited to teenagers and adults. Children should only look after rabbits under parental supervision. Despite popular belief they are not an easy pet to keep and do require certain considerations to be cared for properly. • Typically they live anything from 6-12 years.
