It’s a lovely sunny day as I write this introduction to the latest issue of the Whitby Advertiser. Yes, it’s the May issue already - isn’t this year flying by! Is anyone keeping a count of the shopping days to Christmas?! Joking aside, I bid you a warm welcome as always to our magazine where you will find adverts from businesses both old and new - from carpet cleaning to drain clearing, foot health to photography and cycle repairs to computer repairs. Speaking of the Whitby Co-op, please do take time to read the article about the People’s Fridge, a new project which has recently started in Whitby along with the People’s Kitchen, a community cafe. Whitby Co-op are now donating food at the end of each day to the People’s Fridge - food such as bread, cakes and some dairy items which would otherwise end up in landfill. More local shops and businesses are encouraged to do the same, and volunteers are needed for this excellent initiative! Well, Spring is well and truly here and we have enjoyed some really warm and sunny weather in April. There was some snow too, so perhaps I should remind you of the old saying ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May is out’ which basically means ‘do not discard your winter clothes until summer has fully arrived’! Hopefully there will be no need for snow shoes and winter tyres on our cars in May so we can safely put them away until next winter! The challenges of Covid-19 are still with us, but it is good to see the strict lockdown measures easing and both society and the local economy beginning to re-open. Spirits have been boosted, particularly by the pace and success of the vaccination programme and the lovely Spring weather. Confidence is returning as the clouds finally part for businesses after an enduring year defined by challenge after challenge, and visitors are once again returning to Whitby to enjoy all that this wonderful town has to offer. THE PEOPLE’S FRIDGE OFFERS A WARM WELCOME TO EVERYONE! The People’s Fridge is Whitby’s very own Community Fridge and is located at Flowergate Hall Community Arts Centre, a new community base for arts activities and functions or concerts in the heart of Whitby. Just pop down the alleyway between Bits N Pizzas and the Trinity URC Church at the top of Flowergate and our doorway can be found on the right hand side.
