Another month has flown by and here I am once again writing an introduction to our latest edition. Summer is sadly on its way out and on some mornings you can certainly feel a real sense of autumn in the air as you poke your nose out the door to go to work, and there is enough of a chill to need a jacket. Yes, here we are in September and I bid you a very warm welcome to the September issue of the Whitby Advertiser, the popular local magazine now firmly established as the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you will take time out and browse the following pages of this new edition, whether you are a local resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to our wonderful town. Well, it has been another fantastic summer for Whitby with seemingly even more visitors than in previous years despite the weather being rather unsettled at times. Dark clouds did allow a drop or two of rain to fall on the Regatta weekend at times, and even some thunder and lightning, but rain or shine, but it was a great weekend nevertheless and it remained dry for the fabulous firework display which brought the event to a close. As I write this, the legendary long-standing Whitby Folk Week is under way and the town is heaving with people once again as hundreds of locals, performers and visitors gather for this celebration of traditional music, dance, song and ballads and take part in many concerts, workshops and of course street performances! Will you be tapping your toe to ‘Rattle on the Stovepipe’ or fascinated by the story told by Jimmy’s Fiddle? After the end of the Folk Week, the school holidays will almost be over and the children will soon be back in school. Did you manage to keep your kids entertained through the long summer break? While some parents may be heartbroken to see their little ones go back to school, I am sure that there are others rejoicing, almost driven mad to the point that they are counting the days, hours and minutes to when school starts again!

OCTOBER ISSUE
Deadline for advertisers: FRIDAY 13th SEPTEMBER
Here in the Whitby Advertiser office, our eyes are always firmly fixed on the calendar and the clock, aware of the days, months and minutes to when our next issue goes to press. We are always conscious of the time, and there never seems to be enough hours in the day to get out and about in the area to engage with business owners old and new who wish to advertise with us to fill our magazine each month. The office phones keep ringing, emails continually fill our Inboxes, and the postman is a regular visitor, bringing the many entries to our ever-popular prize crossword which is sponsored by that most splendid of fellows Nick Henderson and his admirable team at Hendersons Sales and Lettings on Flowergate. Do you enter our crossword competition? Our crosswords are not that difficult you know, so grab a cuppa and pen, put your feet up and have a go! You could win the £25 Mastercard gift card donated by Hendersons! You don’t even have to post your entry (think of the poor postman climbing the two flights of stairs to our office with his heavy mail sack) – you can simply email your answer to the mystery clue to us! Thinking of advertising in the Whitby Advertiser? Just call into our offices at the Green Lane Centre and have a chat with us! Alternatively, I am happy to visit you at your business or home if this is more convenient to you. The benefits of a cash lump sum with no monthly repayments are easily seen. However, there are a number of things to consider. Some schemes contain hefty early redemption penalties which means that moving house could be difficult or even impossible. It is worth considering how your property may meet your needs in the future. For example, is it large and expensive to heat, is there a large garden to maintain and can modifications such as stair lifts be installed if necessary? The receipt of a large cash sum could also impact on any state benefits currently being received and will reduce the value of your overall estate for any beneficiaries. Q Is equity release for me?

Q What kind of advice should I look for?
A If you are considering equity release, you should take financial advice from an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA) who is listed on both the Financial Conduct Authority Register and also the Equity Release Council Member Directory. Your IFA will be able to suggest the scheme that is most suited to your needs and circumstances. As equity release is similar to any other type of mortgage (a lender is either buying a percentage

YORKSHIRE LOFT LADDERS, QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

EQUINE INFLUENZA: VACCINATION REMINDER
A reminder for anyone who started their influenza vaccinations during the vaccine amnesty, your 3rd vaccination will be due. This can only be carried out 150-215 days after the second vaccination (please double check days prior to booking an appointment) The 3rd vaccine is vital in boosting immunity to ensure maximum protection is achieved and sustained until your yearly boosters. Without this your horse is not fully protected. There have been 213 confirmed cases of flu, so far this year, compared to 2 last year. This is very much still an active problem with vaccination the only means of slowing the spread. What is equine influenza? Equine influenza (flu) is highly contagious so will spread rapidly through an unvaccinated population of horses. It does not usually cause long term or fatal illness, but can lead to horses having large amounts of time off work and can effect your whole yard. It also has financial implications in terms of cancellation of events and the cost of treatment. It can also lead to serious complications in very young or old horses. How is equine influenza spread? Equine influenza is an airborne virus and can spread quickly and easily through a yard. Under favourable weather conditions it can spread up to 5km. It can be transmitted by direct horse-to-horse contact and also via people, tack, feed and equipment. What are the signs of equine influenza? Signs are caused by an infection of the respiratory tract and typically include: Dry, hacking cough, Nasal discharge, Fever, Lack of appetite, Lethargy Do all horses show the same signs of equine influenza? The severity of signs depends not only on numerous horse-related factors such as age, stress, exercise level and vaccination status but also on how potent the infecting virus is. Unvaccinated horses, who have never been exposed to the virus before are likely to show marked signs whereas vaccinated horses should only display mild signs, if any at all. Can my horse die of equine influenza? The disease carries a low rate of mortality so it is unlikely that your horse will die from infection, although there has been 2 deaths this year. The virus can cause a form of pneumonia which may prove to be fatal in foals or yearlings. 90
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE
Brogan Proud RVN of BECK VETS
Are there any long term consequences of equine influenza? Most horses recover within two weeks however in some horses a post-viral cough can persist for a much longer time and in some individuals it can take up to six months to regain full health. There is also the potential that horses can develop sore muscles and myocarditis (heart muscle inflammation), which can subsequently cause an irregular heartbeat. How is equine influenza treated? There is no specific treatment for equine influenza and although antibiotics may be useful to control a secondary bacterial infection they will not treat the virus itself. Your horse will need a minimum of six weeks rest to recover and your vet will advise you on this. For more information about equine influenza, vaccinations and your horses health please visit www.msd-animal-health-hub.co.uk
