Whitby
December 2016
Hello and welcome to the December edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker who has picked up a copy. Hasn’t this year flown by? It doesn’t seem five minutes ago when we were enjoying the long summer days and warm sunshine, ice cream, and family days on the beach and now December is already here! The shops are full of Christmas goods and festive lights, and Christmas trees and decorations are up all around the town. As I write this, the town has just enjoyed its Christmas Festival organised by Whitby Town Council which was an truly superb weekend of festive fun and activities. Don’t despair if you missed this though – there are lots more festive events to come this month including Winterfest, Robin Hoods Bay Victorian Weekend and the brilliant St Mary’s Christmas Tree Display – check out our What’s On pages for details of these and other festive events taking place during December. Our December issue has everything you need for this special time of the year - ideas for Christmas gifts, Christmas meal deals at local pubs and restaurant as well as tradesmen who can help out with those frustrating problems that have an habit of occurring just when you don’t want them to -boiler breakdowns, burst pipes and other home emergencies. There are the usual bargains to be had on our Line Ads pages and of course our ever-popular prize crossword sponsored by the Hare & Hounds at Hawsker. Just sit back, pour a glass of mulled wine or some other pre-Christmas tipple, have a go at the crossword and then let the following pages help you plan your Christmas! It has been a great year for the Whitby Advertiser. We have seen our distribution rise to 23,000 copies and have upgraded our website. We are always happy to receive feedback on either our magazine or website – our contact details can be found on this page. We often receive praise in our mailbox, which is really nice. For example, Mrs Winfield from Skelton commented on her prize crossword entry today ‘we have just moved into the area and would like to say how interesting and informative the Whitby Advertiser is, so much better than other areas’ and Jim Brown from Lincoln ‘Thank you Whitby Advertiser for being part of my holiday in your part of the world’. I would like to finish by saying thank you too. Thank you to all our advertisers, readers and everyone involved in the production and delivery of the Whitby Advertiser for all your great support over the past year and for making the Whitby Advertiser the success it is today. I would like to wish each and every one of you a most happy and peaceful Christmas. Copyright © Whitby Advertiser Ltd

With Christmas now only a few weeks away, what’s the housing market doing? It is always a busy time for estate agents on the run up to Christmas with buyers wanting to be moved in before the big day. There is always a flurry of activity before Christmas, so when is the best time to get your home on the market? Keen buyers will always look at the property market regardless of the time of year and this can be an advantage as typically this time of year fewer houses do come available on the open market but with the same level of buyers out there you can take advantage of this situation. You will be aware that lighting is a must, I recently viewed a property on behalf of a client and was very shocked to find that the vendors did not have any lights on, apart from in the room where they were sitting and to make things even worse they did not have the central heating on. I can look past that but if it had been your normal vendor this would leave a slight negative in the back of the mind, the property was dark and very cold, then damp then springs to mind, before you know it the property has major issues in your mind and you have discounted it from your search. We have a really handy guide
to viewings in the winter months, which is available from the office and really helps with those what to do and what not to do. It has been another great year for both our rental department and our sales department for which we would like to thank all our clients past and present for their continued support. We have some new ideas planned for next year to make finding your next home even easier but we will keep you posted on that front.

STRANGE WHITBY TALES....
The Hand of Glory A Hand of Glory, a surviving grisly relic of witchcraft and superstition, is on display in Whitby Museum. It is the severed hand of a hanged man, cursed and treated with potions so that it could be used as a candle by thieves. The magical hand would render the robber carrying it invisible, open all locks and put to sleep the inhabitants of the house being robbed. One rarely recounted story about The Hand can be in the old Whitby Archives. The decaying manuscript tells of a time in the late Victorian era when the hand was stolen from the museum. A holidaying youth from wealthy Scarborough took a fancy to the hand when he visited the museum with his parents. He thought that it would look marvellous back home amidst his collection of fossils and animal skulls. On his second visit to the museum, alone, when he was sure the wardens weren’t paying attention, the posh lad slipped the hand from its glass case and replaced it with a pig’s trotter he’d procured from a butcher that morning. Like many any ‘Algerino’, he was not unwilling to steal from his poorer neighbours for his personal gain. The lad made his way back to the family lodgings and hid his booty in his travelling bag. That afternoon, he and his family left for the comforts of home on the Scarborough train. The theft would have been an easy matter, had it not been for the fact that the hand’s glass case had faith-charms about it, and contained a vial of holy water. Removed from the case, the hand wanted nothing more on this earth than to be reunited with its former owner – and worse, the owner was desperate to be reunited with his hand. On the train, posh lad thought he felt the hand twitching and twisting in the bag he’d set upon his lap, but he put this down to the old sinews stretching and contracting now that they were out of the sealed glass case. When he got home he set the hand on his relic table with his collection of fossils and bones then went down to dinner. Back in Whitby a scene of horror was unravelling. As the manuscript from the archives says: ‘For hadn’t a corpse leapt from an unmarked pauper’s grave just beyond the wall of Saint Mary’s graveyard? And hadn’t this corpse, dressed in rotting rags, bits and pieces dropping off it, blundered its way down the steps and along Church Street, all the while mumbling, ‘My hand... I wants back my git hand.’? And didn’t the corpse leap upon a skinny pony, clutching the reins with its one good hand, then spur the terrified beast up toward the Scarborough road?’ In Scarborough, the thief was having a terrible time of it. He’d returned to his bed chamber to find all his fossils and bones shoved to the floor. Only the gory hand remained on the table. Slowly, very slowly, it was drumming its bony finger tips upon the wood. The hideous thing scuttled itself round as if to face him with its tapping, knowing fingers. All but screaming, the lad grabbed the hand and struggled the wriggling thing into a sack which he managed to tie securely. He threw the 60
sack under his bed, thinking that he’d dump the cursed thing in the sea next morning. The archive manuscript continues: ‘And that night didn’t the restless hand scratch and tap - tap – tap in the sack beneath the thief’s bed, keeping him wide awake? And wasn’t a wind wailing, the full moon slashing between speeding clouds, with branches rattling and tapping at the windows? And just then wasn’t there another sound in the awful din? Couldn’t he hear a clip... clop... clip? Over and over. Clip... clop ...clip... Wasn’t that faint hoof beats he could hear? And wasn’t that the sound of a horse being tethered at the gate? And wasn’t something crawling upon the floor boards beneath his bed like a giant, scuttling rat?’ Sure enough, when he plucked up the courage to peek beneath his bed, the sack was empty. The hand had unpicked the knots and was somewhere in the darkened room. He leapt back into bed, covering his head with the blankets. There was a sudden tapping at the window and a hoarse voice moaned: ‘My hand... my hand ... ‘ The window crashed open. Something tall and hideous clambered into the room. Gathering all his nerve, the lad popped his head from the blankets to see what was going on. There was the hand, right in front of him, its spindly fingers reaching out toward his throat. And there in the moonlit room was a terrible thing, half human, half skeleton, the skull of its face wailing: ‘My hand... my hand... I just wants my back my own git hand.’ The terrified lad grabbed the hand just as it reached his face, screaming out: ‘Here’s your hand. Here’s your bloody hand! Take the damned thing and be off with you!’ The corpse reached out, plucked up its hand then was away into the night. Strangely enough, the hand was back in its glass case in the museum the very next morning, and the skeletal thief had reburied himself in his grave upon the cliff. It was said the criminal’s corpse was happy enough that at least one small part of him was safe in a Christian casket, and better his one hand be saved for a little history, seeing as everything else about him was damned for eternity. As for the thieving Scarborough lad well, his black hair turned pure white and stood end up straight with the shock of it all. It never regained its colour nor would never lie flat again, so you’ll easily spot him if he’s ever back in town and thinking of thieving. The Hand of Glory is still there in Whitby Museum. It is well worth taking a look at, although whatever you do, take care not to steal it. You know what will happen if you do!

HIDDEN CHRISTMAS DANGERS
Christmas is coming and it’ll soon be the time to indulge, celebrate and have fun – and as an important part of the family, our pets will normally be enjoying it with you too. But the festive season also presents a world of hidden dangers to our four-legged friends. Many owners are blissfully unaware of just how many of our festive favourites spell out trouble on many levels for our beloved pets. We have tried to give you a few of the most common Christmas dangers for you pet below. It goes without saying, if in doubt about your pet’s health contact us immediately and will advise you. Top of the list...Chocolate! The chemical theobromine, which is a bit like caffeine, is found in chocolate and is toxic to dogs. Even small amounts can cause agitation, hyperexcitability, convulsions and heart problems. The darker the chocolate, the higher levels of theobromine become – with cooking chocolate the most dangerous. Chocolate should always be avoided. Even tiny amounts have the potential to make them at least feel sick. White chocolate does not contain enough theobromine to cause toxicity, but it is still fatty and high in sugar, therefore posing a pancreatitis risk. Avoid putting any chocolate on or under the Christmas tree including tree decorations, as the temptation might be too great for our four legged friends. One of the most overlooked....Grapes Grapes and their dried products (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure.Exactly how these are poisonous is unknown and the volume needed to cause symptoms is difficult to predict. Some dogs will eat one grape and become seriously ill; others can eat many of them without problems. The only way to be safe is to keep them out of reach of your dog. Kidney failure from a toxic dose of grapes or raisins usually develops within 48hours. Please remember Christmas cake and mince pies are all packed full of currants, raisins and sultanas and that chocolate-coated raisins run the additional risk of chocolate toxicity. Bones Once cooked all bones become brittle and splinter easily. This can lead to fragments getting ‘stuck’, causing gut irritation and perforation, or even just difficulty toileting. The best thing to do is take all bones and carcasses straight outside into a sealed bin. Bird bones are hollow, which will splinter either raw or cooked and so must never be given to your dog under any circumstances. Onions (and garlic, leeks, shallots and chives) These all belong to the Allium species and can cause 94

toxicity, whether uncooked or cooked. Initially there can be vomiting and diarrhoea but the main effect is damage to red blood cells, resulting in anaemia. This may not be apparent for several days after ingestion. It is advisable not to give your pet any left overs as all our food tends to contain at least one of these. Decorations Christmas decorations become more attractive with each year that passes; unfortunately this usually means they are also more tempting to your four legged friends. Despite probably not tasting too good, every year we get several cases of dogs who just fancied a bit of garland or that snowman hanging on the tree! Whilst not often toxic, they can still cause significant problems if ingested. Baubles can splinter into shards which can cause irritation, perforation or blockages. Pets tend to enjoy playing with and eating tinsel. They may get a nasty shock if they chew through the electrical cable for your Christmas lights - and don’t forget the fire hazard. Christmas trees, holly, mistletoe and poinsettia All of these types of festive foliage are mildly toxic if ingested and can cause vomiting, drooling and diarrhoea, so should be kept well out of reach. Both dogs and cats are know to regularly decide they would like a munch on the most random of vegetation for no reason so be vigilant! Pine needles can get stuck in paws and cause irritation as well as potentially causing irritation or perforation of the intestines if eaten. Vacuum daily to help reduce the number of fallen needles. Presents We put a lot of effort into hiding our presents on the floor under the tree, which is very accessible to our pets. Be sure to keep any presents that may contain chocolate, alcohol and batteries out of reach. Many families buy their furry little friends their own presents to open with the family on Christmas Day. This is great, but remember your pet doesn’t know how to differentiate between presents when you are not there to help! And one to watch for the whole of our long Whitby winter… Antifreeze Ethylene glycol (antifreeze) ingestion is very dangerous. It is sweet-tasting and very palatable. Even small quantities can cause serious and fatal kidney damage. The longer the delay between ingestion of the antifreeze and initiation of treatment the worse the prognosis. If you suspect that your pet has consumed any anti freeze contact us immediately. From everyone at the Beck Veterinary Practice, have a very Happy AND safe Christmas!
