February 2017
Hello and welcome to the February edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker to the area. February may be the shortest month of the year, but it is the month that brings us St Valentine’s Day, the day dedicated to lovers all around the world. Red is the colour, hearts are worn on the sleeve and love is well and truly in the air. Restaurants, bars and flower shops are the focus of sweethearts young and old as they celebrate the loving spirit that this day brings. Why not take a look through the pages of this month’s edition for some great Valentine’s ideas that will help you enjoy the loving spirit with your loved one? Passion may be the fashion on special days such as Valentine’s Day, but here at the Whitby Advertiser, passion is in fashion all year round as we have a passion for not only seeking out advertising opportunities to fill our new issue each month but also a passion for seeing local businesses succeed. Our passion is what makes the Whitby Advertiser the success that it is today and the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area. If you are interested in advertising with us, the advertising section on our website gives all the information you will need, including advert prices and sizes, advertising deadline dates and a map of where we deliver to. A couple of important dates coming up are Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday 26 March this year, and Easter Sunday, which is Sunday 16 April. We already have reserved space for advertisers in our coming issues for these events but still have space available so if you are a pub, bar, restaurant, retailer or business planning to host a celebratory event or offering a special promotion, please do get in touch. Our graphic designer Graham is happy to work with you to create your advert at no extra cost. As always, I encourage you to sit down with a lovely cuppa and browse through this new edition and then have a go at our prize crossword competition. Drop us a line with the hidden mystery word and your name will be entered in our prize draw to win a £20 voucher which has kindly been donated by Meadow to spend in their shop on Skinner Street. The Whitby Advertiser – bringing business to your door in 2017. Have a great February folks!!

WAR VETERANS COMMUNITY CLUB
Safety Catch is a war veteran’s community club which has been established here in Whitby. It offers a first response help and advice not only to those who have served in the Armed forces, butalso to those associated, for example, family, relatives, colleagues and lost friends. When someone is lost who gave their lives during a conflict of war, and on operations, It can indeed affect the whole community. Often termed the aftermath of war and the invisible scars left on people, issues such as the consequences of battle fatigue, P.T.S.D and other service related illnesses can be difficult to understand. Safety Catch aims to improve the quality of the lives of war veterans and their associates by offering both advice and assistance in areas such as housing, law, welfare benefits, pension rights, and compensation claims as well as acting as a gateway to other organisations. The chairman and founder of Safety Catch is Chris Moulds, a former serving member of the Armed Forces.

LOCAL FAMILY BUSINESS MAKE QUAYSIDE THE BEST!
Of 12,000 fish and chip shops, Quayside was judged to be the best in the UK in 2014 when they won the coveted and extremely prestigious title of Fish and Chip Shop of the Year. The awards are run by Seafish, who are the UK’s authority on fish and seafood. This is no mean feat, considering the amount of competition in the country and the rigorous judging process. ‘Winning an award like this takes years’ explains Stuart Fusco, who heads up Quayside for the long standing Whitby family business. ‘The judging process is not solely focussed on the product, there are inspections in the kitchen, the way we train our team, how we source our products as well as how well we fry fish and chips. It’s very important we excel in all areas of the business.’ With the judging process being so detailed, it takes a huge amount of preparation, investment and good management to be considered as a finalist. Quayside was purchased by the Fusco family in 1999 and is now in its 18th year of operation. Over the years, it has seen many improvements to the take-away, the restaurant, the kitchen and preparation areas. Last week saw the arrival of a brand new frying range which also features a griddle. This new addition will mean more menu flexibility and the ability to respond to ever changing customer habits and it seems the Quayside team are ready to embrace the change. ‘2017 is going to be a good one’ says Stuart, ‘Whitby remains a fantastic place to visit and customers need to look no further than Quayside for our traditional fish and chips and some new, exciting dishes.’ Quayside is open daily from 11am; please visit www.quaysidewhitby.co.uk for more detailed opening times. 17

GP’S URGE PATIENTS WITH FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS TO THINK ABOUT SELF-CARE
GP surgeries across Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby areas have seen a rise in patients with flu-like symptoms and are urging these patients to look at self-care options. Winter can generally bring more seasonable illnesses such as the flu-virus. November saw an increase in patients visiting their GP with flu-like symptoms which can potentially be managed at home or by visiting a local pharmacist.
Dr Charles Parker, local GP and Clinical Chair of NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group said:
• Dr Charles Parker, local GP and CCG Clinical Chair
“Our surgery has definitely felt added pressure due to patients making appointments before they have looked at other ways to manage flu-like symptoms.
“Flu is a common infectious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes. It is caused by a different group of viruses to the ‘common cold’ and the symptoms tend to start more suddenly, be more severe and last longer. “However, spreading of the virus can be avoided by unnecessary contact with other people whilst infectious. If you are otherwise fit and healthy, there is usually no need to see a doctor if you have flu-like symptoms. Patients should try to rest at home, keep warm and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. It’s also worthwhile checking your medicine cabinet and purchase paracetamol, aspirin or ibuprofen in anticipation of any illness. “You can visit your local pharmacist or supermarket to buy paracetamol or ibuprofen to lower a high temperature and relieve aches if necessary, instead of requesting antibiotics. The NHS and other health organisations across the world are trying to reduce the use of antibiotics, especially for conditions that aren’t serious. 26
“The overuse of antibiotics in recent years means they’re becoming less effective and has led to the emergence of “superbugs”. These are strains of bacteria that have developed resistance to many different types of antibiotics.
“GP surgeries are also under severe strain, particularly throughout the winter period, so it would really help if patients tried more self-care methods. Of course, there are circumstances where patients are more at risk. If you’re 65 years of age or over, or you’re pregnant, or you a long-term medical condition for example, you may need medication from your GP to treat or prevent complications.” Look out for leaflets and posters with the ‘Stay Well This Winter’ logo to get advice on flu and protection against the season’s biggest ailments. Details of local healthcare options available to help you get the treatment you need as quickly as possible can be found on the Your Health website: www.yourhealthvoice.org

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SELL MY PROPERTY?
Article courtesy of Nick Henderson Hendersons Estate Agents, Whitby
Now that Christmas feels like a distant memory, the mince pies have all been eaten, the decorations have been taken down and we’re all back at work – we keep getting asked the same question again and again here at Hendersons: Should I put my property onto the market now or wait until the Spring? Unfortunately, there may be many who are not even asking the question and just taking it as a given that it is not worth trying to sell in the winter months. Seriously buyers do not care whether there is snow, or there are daffodils, on the ground – they are looking all year round. Let’s take a look over all 12 months of the year and confirm why any time of the year is a good time to sell your property: JANUARY / FEBRUARY With other people waiting until the Spring - there are not as many properties on the market and, therefore, not as much competition. A lot of what is available will likely be old stock and buyers love a property which is fresh on the market. Only serious buyers are looking at this time of year and everyone else is having a rest and staying warm and cozy at home. Anyone selling their main residence at this time, will be in a strong position to purchase a new house when the flood of properties come onto the market in Spring. MARCH / APRIL Traditionally a really strong time to sell and many of those selling will also be looking to buy - so lots of activity all round! However, in Spring, it is especially important that a property is realistically and competitively priced so that is stands out from the competition. MAY / JUNE Time to take advantage of the fact that lots of those who put their property onto the market during the busy period in Spring are now looking to buy. There are also lots of people looking to purchase, and complete on a sale, before the new school term starts in September. JULY / AUGUST With long warm evenings and the garden looking at its best this really is a great time to have viewings.
SEPTEMBER / OCTOBER Traditionally the second busiest time to sell (after Spring) The kids are back at school, many teenagers have headed off to uni and the end of the year is in sight - so many are looking to the future and want to buy and be in their new home by Christmas. NOVEMBER / DECEMBER Many of those who sold in Autumn are now looking to buy. Also, what is more homely than a home which is decorated for Christmas? So, as with a competition - you have to take part in it to be in with a chance of winning it! The same goes for selling - you have to be on the market to be in with the best chance of selling and you certainly won’t be moving if you are not! In a nutshell- it is always a great time to sell and with more sold properties in 2016, who better to call than Hendersons. Speak to a member of the team today book your free valuation - and let’s get started! 41

DON’T LET DOG BREATH SPOIL YOUR VALENTINES DAY!
This February is National Pet Dental Health Month and we want to use this as an excuse to help raise awareness and management skills of pet owners across the local area. Even the most contentious and caring of owners seem to accredit their beloved pet’s bad breath to being ‘just one of those things’. But don’t turn your nose to Fido’s or Fluffy’s bad breath! It is most defiantly not normal. That odour might signify a serious health risk, with the potential to damage not only your pet’s teeth and gums but its internal organs as well. The high level of bacteria that builds up can lead to septicaemia, heart infections, severe diarrhoea and kidney damage to name but a few.
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS
effective thing you can do to keep their teeth healthy. It may reduce the frequency or even eliminate the need for periodic dental cleaning procedures. Daily brushing is best, but it’s not always possible and brushing several times a week can be effective. Most dogs accept brushing, but cats can be a bit more resistant – patience and training from a young age are important. Please remember that there are special pet toothpastes available, use of human toothpaste it not safe in our pets due to the high fluoride content. Also, dog and cat tooth brushes are specifically designed for the job making them easier to use and more effective.
Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian to spot signs of a problem as early as possible. Here at the Beck Veterinary Practice, this is something that we check routinely at all vaccination appointments. Our vets amalgamate all their knowledge to give your pet a full ‘MOT’. It is estimates that 60-70% pets have some dental disease development by the age of 3 years. It is a common problem and is certainly not reserved for the older animal. Here are some other things to be on the watch out for: • Teeth that are discolored or covered in tartar
• Abnormal chewing, drooling, or dropping food from the mouth
• Reduced appetite or refusal to eat • Pain in or around the mouth • Bleeding from the mouth
• Swelling in the areas surrounding the mouth • Broken or loose teeth
• Extra teeth or retained baby teeth
Some pets become irritable when they have dental problems . Always be careful when evaluating your pet’s mouth, because a painful animal may bite. Often the worst problem areas are on the large, muti-rooted teeth (carnassial) towards the back of your pets mouth. These can be difficult to check properly. Pop in anytime and one of our team will help you have a look.
Prevention of the most common oral disease in pets consists of frequent removal of the dental plaque and tartar that forms on teeth that are not kept clean. Regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the single most 84
We offer free dental health checks with our team of friendly and knowledgeable nurses. Advice on brushing and other ways of managing your pet’s dental health can be discussed at these checks. Other methods we advise include: • Recognised dental health diets with specially shaped kibble. • Enzymatic additives for water or food. • Mouth washes and rinses.
Special dental treats can be a good addition but these do not substitute for other methods - and be aware that certain well known brands are nearly completely ineffective and very high in fat and calories.
Prevention is so much better then cure; severe periodontal disease can make your pet feel very poorly and painful. Plus the required corrective surgery can take many hours itself followed by a lengthy recovery time. Stick to your new year resolution and carry on make your doggie’s dental health part of your daily routine.

WORKING WITH AUTISM - BENS STORY
30 year old Ben Guyers from South Otterington, North Yorkshire is just like any other chap his age; he loves beer, rugby, spending time with friends and watching his beloved football team, Middlesbrough. Ben also works. He is currently employed in the NHS by Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). But things have not always been easy for Ben and his family. He was diagnosed with Autism at the age of eight.
“At just six weeks old, Ben wasn’t very well at all. He was also severely bullied as a child both at school and where we lived. We just didn’t think we could get the support back then where we were living – so we moved.” said his father, Frank. The Guyers family moved to North Yorkshire and instantly felt Ben was “at home”. At the age of twenty two and after seeing his confidence improve a little his parents decided to help Ben look for work.
“The last thing we wanted for Ben was for him to just sit around at home. We wanted him to have a role in life – something to get out of bed for. We were introduced to Kevin Ward at North Yorkshire County Council’s Supported Employment who really cared about Ben and wanted to get him work as soon as possible.” said his mother, Gillian.
She added, “After a couple of tries which didn’t quite work out, North Yorkshire County Council told us about a local NHS organisation based in Northallerton. They told us that they were very happy to welcome someone with Ben’s challenges and asked us to pop in for a chat. We went with Kevin and met the team at NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group who were really friendly and understanding.” On 24 June 2014, Ben started a fixed term contract as General Reception Assistant at the CCG.
“There was too much noise in some other places – it seemed quite a calm office with friendly people. Kevin stayed with Ben in the office to make sure he was comfortable and then started to withdraw when he seemed confident enough.” said Frank.
On 1 April 2015, Ben was offered his role permanently at the CCG working 8.45am to 3.45pm every Tuesday and Thursday. Daily responsibilities for Ben include preparing 90
meeting rooms, collecting printing, helping with shredding, answering the main reception telephone and greeting guests. The CCG offers a relatively structured day providing a ‘to do’ list but it also encourages Ben to ask other staff if they need any help, for variety and the chance to learn new skills. When asked what he thought of his job and what he most liked to do, Ben said: “I was a bit nervous on my first day. But as the days went on I felt more comfortable and relaxed. I now really like this job.
“I like working with people and making friends making people laugh with jokes. My favourite thing is telling people to smile and annoying Richard [Ben’s line manager]! “I really enjoy fire training and showing people where they need to go in case of fire and what to do. I next want to learn how to scan documents from the printer.” said Ben. Richard Kirby, Ben’s line manager at the CCG said: “Having Ben in our office really is fantastic. If you’re having a bad day, rest assured he will be there to cheer you up with a really, really terrible joke, a chat about football or an impression. “Visitors forget everyone else’s name – but they don’t forget Ben’s.”
Janet Probert, CCG Chief Officer said, “Every day Ben’s in the office, he literally lights up the room and makes sure his colleagues are always smiling. Ben’s humour, caring nature and sensitivity are welcome in the team and I honestly couldn’t imagine the place without him. “I cannot express enough the value of having Ben around and urge any organisation to consider offering similar opportunities to others.” “Ben’s learnt a lot since he started work. He’s learnt more about technology. Ten years ago, we wouldn’t have imagined seeing Ben in front of a computer screen, typing an email. It’s experience he can put on a CV.” said Frank.
He added, “We get sent photos and updates from Richard, and Ben’s treated as part of the team. For his 30th birthday, we couldn’t believe how generous the staff were. They took him out for a curry (his favourite!) and gave him lots of presents including his very own Middlesbrough football shirt. At Christmas, he was made Secret Santa and we saw pictures of him standing in front of everyone making speeches and giving out presents.
“Ben has two older brothers who both live and work away. Now, they can share stories about their days at work.” said Gillian.
She added, “Since his first day, we have seen Ben’s confidence improve. He’s happier and seems to have a more diverse view of life. It’s nice to know he’s earning his own living, getting a pension and contributing to the workplace and country.
“I think that employing a person with special needs can produce huge benefits within the workplace. Not everyone has the opportunity to meet someone with Autism in their day-to-day living. So being able to introduce colleagues to the challenges that special needs employees encounter on an everyday basis, can promote teamwork and compassion. “If any parent of a special needs child is anxious about the workplace environment, I would say to “go for it”. Do your research and get advice and support but give them the chance. Autism is such a massive spectrum so everyone is different. You never know if you don’t try and it can open doors.
“We know that Ben has developed as a person and has learned so much as a result of being given such a fantastic opportunity to work. And that success is due to Supported Employment and the openness of employers.”
