Whitby

January 2017

Hello and welcome to the January edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker here in town for the holiday season. First of all, a very Happy New Year to all our readers, advertisers, contributors and everyone involved in the publication, printing and distribution of the Whitby Advertiser. 2016 has been another successful year for our magazine; a year which saw our distribution increase to 23,000 copies and many new advertisers place adverts with us as well as the launch of our new website. A special thank you to you all for making Whitby Advertiser the success that it is today – the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding area. Doesn’t time fly? I cannot believe just how quickly the past year has flown by, and 2017 now stands before us! Here’s to a happy and prosperous New Year, and a fond farewell to 2016! Earlier today, I was browsing through New Year quotations online and admit to this one attributed to Edith Pierce as being one of my favourites: “We will open a book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called opportunity and its first chapter is New Years Day." At the Whitby Advertiser, we are always looking around for advertising opportunities to fill our new issue each month. The month starts with many blank pages to fill, then ends with a struggle to find space available just before we go to press! We start this New Year with a packed 96-page issue, so I encourage you to sit down with a lovely cuppa and browse through this new edition. Let the Whitby Advertiser help you fulfil your New Years resolution, whether it be a beauty treatment, a new hairstyle, or a conservatory, loft extension or new kitchen for your home... the list is endless! In the following pages you will find a local supplier or tradesman who has the skills and expertise to meet your every need and make your New Year dreams come true! Don’t forget, all of our advertisers old and new can be found online in our business directory. Just visit www.whitbyadvertiser.co.uk and click on our business directory where you can browse through a comprehensive list of local businesses, sorted into categories for your convenience. The Whitby Advertiser – bringing business to your door in 2017. Happy New Year once again folks!! They progressed to AAT level 1, award in computerised accounts and award in bookkeeping, which gave them the underpinning knowledge to start their AAT level 2 certificate. They’re due to finish this in 2017 and they haven’t looked back! Melanie has been working in the financial sector for 15 years but wanted to gain AAT qualifications. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my AAT courses and use the skills in my current role as an Apprentice Accounts Manager at Eldwick Limited in Whitby. I now have the professional qualifications to support my experience in preparing budgets and have found my training in Sage and Excel for manually checking financial information, has been invaluable for our construction projects. I also made some great friends and had a supportive tutor. I would definitely recommend it to others looking for a professional accountancy qualification.” Rachel also has experience in the financial sector and was looking to gain a nationally recognised professional qualification in accountancy. “Progressing from the introduction course to level 2 has been really useful for my day to day role at Guy Bentley Limited in Whitby. The skills learnt have enabled me to gain a better understanding of the year end processes and underpinning day to day financial transactions for plant hire. I’m looking forward to progressing onto the 8

THE WILLOW BRANCH ENDS YEAR WITH AWARD NOMINATION Less than 7 months ago ‘The Willow Branch’ opened its doors, returning the popular ‘Staircase’ Café site on Golden Lion Bank to a coffee lounge / gift shop. The mission – to serve freshly baked cakes and scones alongside a modern ‘light lunch’ café menu with an emphasis on the use of good quality, local ingredients. Complimenting this with freshly ground ‘Baytown Coffee’ and a choice of 18 award winning loose leaf teas the owners are quickly building a keen reputation with locals. As the year has progressed this reputation has been further enhanced with the addition of ‘Afternoon Tea’ bookings and most recently an evening 3-course Christmas Fayre Menu for groups of 4-14. Credit for the Willow Branch’s hard work culminated in a nomination for ‘Best Small Business’ in this year’s 18

prestigious ‘Scarborough Evening News Business Awards’, an awards ceremony acknowledged by Prime Minister Theresa May in a letter to the organisers. Owner Natalie Williamson said “It’s been a hectic year but this nomination really was the icing on the cake. Everything is made fresh and all our cakes, scones and bakes are baked on site so it’s been all go, but this makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

Why should people buy from you and not the place down the road? Every business has something that’s their own, or something no one else has claimed as their own yet. FedEx wasn’t the first company to deliver packages overnight, but they were the first to use it as their USP – and then to guarantee it. So, before you begin choosing and implementing your marketing plans, take some time to work out your USP. Write out a list of at least 100 reasons why your business is great and people should buy from you. Get your team to help you. Look at your business 42

from the outside and ask yourself what makes you stand out from the competition. Ask your best customers why they choose to do business with you. Ask your employees what makes them proud to work for your company. Have fun with this! Then, once you’ve got this list of great things about your business, turn them into benefits to your customers of buying from you. One of the great things about my service is that I teach business owners how to define their USP. This turns into a benefit to my clients that they can get more customers from their target market and increase their sales and their profits. Work through all the great things about your product or service in this way. It should boil down to 6 or 7 benefits to your customers which will be the starting point for some great marketing. Your USP is the combination of the benefits to your customer of buying from you. A strong USP should be truly unique and exciting to your target market. It should also get people talking and can’t be easily copied, or people will recognise that’s been copied! Then, turn that USP into a great marketing tool that entices customers to start knocking on your door. Above all, have fun with this!

FESTIVE FUN IN WHITBY! In Whitby we know how to eat, drink and be merry... whether it’s relaxing with a glass or two of mulled wine or indulging in traditional Yorkshire grub, there’s plenty of opportunity for festive fun in Whitby this year!

The Christmas countdown is well and truly on and as usual there’s loads of fantastic events happening throughout town over the festive season. The Whitby Winterfest was certainly not to be missed with its ice rink, beach hut themed Christmas market and fabulous live music. The annual Santa Express, running from Whitby to Glaisdale, is a Whitby tradition loved by kids young and old where you can meet Santa himself in his winter grotto aboard the train while sampling delicious mince pies. Those feeling particularly brave can take part in the annual Boxing Day Dip and, even if you don’t fancy paddling in the cold waters of the North Sea, the fancy dress on display is a sight to behold!

The shops on Church Street have lots of fabulous little gifts for last minute Christmas shopping and pottering along the cobbles and looking in the windows at all the

pretty little trinkets and locally crafted gifts is certainly giving us some great ideas for our office Secret Santa! We’re feeling very festive in our office on Flowergate, our Christmas tree is now taking pride of place in the window and is decorated with our adorable pompom Ingrid Flute sheep! We also have a Christmas tree on display at St Mary’s Church where every year local businesses, community groups and local schools fill the Church with a variety of beautifully decorated trees. From the traditional to the wacky, there’s a tree for all tastes and we are happy to be celebrating our 5th year of being involved! This year we’ve been encouraging all our cottage owners to get into the Christmas spirit too by decorating their properties or leaving special welcome packs for guests. From Christmas cake and chocolates, to carrots and cookies for Santa and his reindeerthose little touches are always appreciated by guests and ensure a great first impression upon entering the holiday cottages. It certainly is great to see so many of our fabulous holiday homes decorated for the festive season: the trees are up, the twinkly lights switched on and the log fires burning- what a lovely and cosy place to relax after a great day having festive fun in Whitby! BRICKS vs CLICKS

A growing number of Online Estate Agents have burst onto the scene offering to sell properties at rock-bottom prices. Adverts from these companies have filled day-time advert breaks and left people wondering – why would I pay more for a high street Estate Agent when online agents say they can sell my house for as little as £400? The popularity of Online Estate agents has not taken off as quickly as predicted and, in most areas of the country, they have had little impact on High Street Agents. This could be mainly down to the fact that there is much more to selling a house than placing basic details on a few property portals. So what are the differences between these 2 types of agent and who should people trust to handle their most important financial transaction.

PERSONAL SERVICE

High Street Agents- Allow the luxury of being able to walk into an office and get advice from an experienced member of staff in person. At Hendersons our office is open on weekends and until 7pm on week-days meaning we’re available to see our clients at times which work around their work schedules and busy lives. Online Agents– Many operate from nation-wide call centres, meaning customers will often converse over the phone with someone without local knowledge and face-to-face meetings are not an option.

MARKETING

High Street Agents- A good agent will pay a visit to measure rooms, draw a floorplan and take the most attractive photographs possible to ensure the accommodation is being marketing to its full potential and standing out from the crowd. Online Agents- Again, it varies. However, many request owners take their own photographs and floorplans are often none-existent.

VIEWINGS

Online Agents – Different companies offer different packages but the majority arrange viewings but usually leave property owners to carry them out.

VALUATIONS

High Street Agents – Spend time carrying out research, looking over comparables and visiting homes to ensure that the right market price is set. Many potential sellers opt to have valuations carried out by several local agents before making a decision on which is best suited to them and their accommodation. Online Agents – Sometimes send out a representative, usually from from out of the area, but also often value using just online data.

FEES

Online agents will always beat High Street Agents hands-down when it comes to fees. An office, advertising on major portals, experienced staff able to effectively conduct viewings and carry out valuations, interactive touch screens, keeping a modern and evolving agency website running, LED window displays, newspaper advertising, professional photographs, and all the many other services a really good high street agent will offer, can not be done for a few hundreds pounds. Would an online agent offer value for money? A high street agent is not just trying to sell their vendor’s properties – but trying to sell them for the best possible price for the owner. This can be most easily and effectively achieved by an experienced negotiator. Also, bear in mind an online agent will likely ask for an up-front fee as opposed to the no-sale-no-fee approach meaning they have been paid regardless of whether they manage to sell the property or not and regardless of what price. Anyone confused about what type of agent to use would be best advised, as a starting point, to look online at the quality of marketing different agents offer. Also, researching into the services they offer, as well as the level of market exposure, could set you well on the way to deciding between bricks and clicks.

High Street Agents – Will happily take care of viewings meaning that whether vendors are busy, on holiday or at work, viewings can take place. A member of staff with first-hand knowledge of the property can show potential buyers around and answer any questions they may have.

NINE NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS...

New Year means only one thing, time for Resolutions! This year considered involving your pet to help improve their health and well being too. Here are a few ideas to help get you going: 1 DIET AND EXERCISE!

With over 50 percent of pets in the U.K classified as overweight, there’s no better time for owners to commit to a new diet health regimen for their pets. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise, the right kind of foods, and plenty of clean water. Many owners guess by sight their pet’s daily intake, resulting in overfeeding and weight gain. It’s important to use scales to weigh the food your pet should be getting for their ideal weight. The recommended feeding guidelines on the bag are good place to start to figure out how much food Fido (or Kitty) really needs. Older and neutered pets usually have lower energy needs than young, intact animals. It is important to remember that growing pets, especially large breed dogs, have very specific nutrient requirements to ensure their bodies grow properly. Choosing a diet specifically tailored to your pet’s life stage is a great way to keep them in optimal health. Please call us to book a free nurse consult with us to discuss your pet’s diet. 2 UPDATE PET ID INFO.

People move, get new phone numbers and often forget to update their pet’s details. They tend to only remember once the pet is lost. If any of your contact information has changed in 2016, update their tags and microchip information today. It’s the best way to ensure a lost pet returns home safely. At the beginning of 2016, it became law to have dogs microchipped. if your dog is not done, make an appointment with us now. 3 GET YOUR FOUR LEGGED FRIEND NEUTERED.

It really is for the best. Your dog and cat will have a lesser chance of developing cancers in the reproductive organs, and will have a less volatile personality and better behaviour overall. Your pet will also be less likely to mark territory, wander and contribute to an already overloaded pet population. Don’t hesitate to call us to discuss getting you pet neutered.

4 PRACTICE GOOD ORAL HYGIENE HABITS WITH YOUR PET. Daily tooth brushing is the best way to keep tartar and plaque at bay — just be sure to use a toothpaste meant for dogs and cats. Water additives, dental diets, and pet mouth washes all help to reduce tartar and improve oral health. Please be aware that ‘dog breath’ is not normal and is usually causes by poor teeth. Certain breeds are much more predisposed to having bad teeth. Our 86

MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS

friendly nurses are more then willing to check your pooch’s teeth and offer home dental care advice. 5 GROOM YOUR PET DAILY.

Brushing your pet serves many purposes. It removes excess fur from the coat, reducing the amount you find in your home. It helps distribute oils from the skin to the fur, keeping the coat shiny and healthy. Grooming is a therapeutic and bonding activity. 6 MAKE A DATE WITH US!

Yearly examinations by the veterinarian are a key component of good preventive care. Many medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, or obesity are common in aging pets and much easier to manage when detected in the early stages. Veterinary visits are also the perfect time to ask us for any advice. All our team love to meet our patients, so even just call in and say hello! 7 INCORPORATE PLAYTIME INTO YOUR ROUTINE.

Cats love the thrill of chasing various toys; just don’t tell them it’s exercise! Toys that trigger a cat’s predatory instinct are a great way to get them off the couch and engaged in a little aerobic activity. Experiment to see what really gets your cat going. Try lasers, catnip toys, crinkly balls, and climbable cat trees.

Prevention really is better then cure. No one wants their lovely little companion to suffer unnecessary distress, pain or discomfort. By keeping up to date with vaccination you will be helping protect them for a wide variety if unpleasant and potentially fatal illnesses. And with an increased prevalence of both worms (internal) and ticks and fleas (external) parasites, it has never been more important to have a regular date in your diary and not miss any treatments. 9 SOCIALIZE YOUR DOG WITH OTHER DOGS.

If your dog isn’t given the opportunity to hang out with other dogs on occasion, then problems can arise. For example, when you’re walking your dog, he may display aggressive behaviours as soon as he sees another dog. For this reason and more, it’s always a good idea to allow your dog to socialize with other pets as much as possible. This is best done from an early age. Here at the Beck Veterinary Practice, we are offering free puppy parties throughout 2017. This is the perfect opportunity to socialise your young puppy and learn about good pet husbandry. Please call us for more info

From everyone at The Beck Veterinary Practice, have a happy and healthy New Year!

COMMUNITY NEWS

IT’S NOW OR NEVER WITH? MUSIC IN HOSPITALS

A charity whose aim is to improve the quality of life for people in hospitals, care homes and day centres through the use of professional live music has requested a little less conversation and lots more rock and roll in their search for Elvis Presley performers.

Music In Hospitals (North East) whose strap line is ‘creating joy through live music’ has listened to patients and service users’ requests and is now looking at rock and roll to soothe the soul.

The charity arranges around 1000 concerts per year across the North of England with professional musicians engaging patients and their families. For many years, the popular genres of music have included traditional folk, popular show tunes000 and wartime reminiscence songs but increasingly, some patients are asking for Elvis to entertain them. Alison Forbes who is the Development Officer in the North East is looking for professional Elvis and other rock and roll performers to audition.

“We work with professional musicians who are carefully chosen by audition and who all have the right communication and engagement skills to help them to interact with the audience irrespective of their illness, disability or age.

“We will be auditioning acts in the New Year in Newcastle and I’d urge any one who has the talent to perform and the passion to benefit vulnerable people to come forward. We operate across the whole of the North of England, so we hope to find a number of suitable performers. “ Prospective Elvis Presley’s should have a band (max 3 in total) or perform solo with an acoustic guitar. Backing tapes aren’t acceptable as Music in

88

Hospital only provides live music. Successful artists will be eligible for paid work.

One talented musician who is looking to work with the charity is Jamie Bell who fronts the successful Baldy Holly Band. “ This is a great charity and they have got it right when they say that people want to hear rock and roll. I’ve been hooked since I was a small child when I heard Buddy Holly and Elvis. They inspired me to get a guitar and perform.”

To apply for a Rock and Roll audition, please email your contact details, a short biography and a You Tube or website link to a live performance to alison.forbes@musicinhospitals.org.uk by the 9th January 2017.
