We Are Whitby, the group that organised the last big Beach Hut Christmas Market in Whitby in 2014 now have a team working every week to plan the next big Christmas event: ‘Whitby Winterfest 2016’ and are holding an official launch day at the Pavilion Cafe on Thursday July 7th with two sessions at 2pm and 7pm. You will be able to find out more about all that is being planned for this fantastic event, how you can be involved, and more about the ‘Weird, Wonderful, Wacky Winterfest Wear Parade! The We Are Whitby team are also planning a few Winterfest fundraising events so we can put on this exciting community event. Hello and welcome to the July edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you will enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a resident, business owner, visitor or holidaymaker to the area.

Well, here we are in the middle of summer and the schools will soon start their long summer break, but what is going on with the weather this year? It is late June as I write this and there has been so little sunshine this month, just lots of rain, mist and well below average temperatures. Newspapers reported that Britain would experience the hottest Spring weather in 170 years with temperatures soaring beyond 30° C by the second half of May, then ‘extreme heat surges’ from the continent would bring heatwave after heatwave throughout June and July making it the hottest summer in decades. Hmmm. It hasn’t happened so far! Hopefully, all will change in July – better late than never as they say! The unsettled weather hasn’t dampened anyone’s spirits here at the Whitby Advertiser though, as our issue stands at a bumper 104-pages this month and we have squeezed as much as we possibly can between the covers. As always, you will find adverts from new businesses as well as our regular advertisers, so whether it be home and garden, dining out, health and beauty, pets, motor spares or holiday accommodation that interests you, you will find it covered here in the Advertiser. STRANGE WHITBY TALES....

Grape Lane & The Burning Beauty At the eastern end of the old swing bridge, on the corner of Bridge Street and Grape Lane, is the site of an ancient tavern, presently called The Dolphin. The building there now is a relatively modern construction, built in 1912. Once, the area below The Dolphin housed the town’s dungeon, a damp, pitch black nest of cells that were prone to flooding at high tides. Several prisoners, while shackled and chained, were said to have ‘committed suicide’ – this meaning that they drowned in their cells at high tide while their jailors were busy getting drunk up above. The basements and lower kitchens, which stand on the site of the old dungeon, are well known to be haunted. Many a barmaid and serving lad has refused to go down to the cellars and kitchens because of the strange atmosphere and ghostly shadows there. Grape Lane itself, once the home of Captain Cook, was formerly known as ‘Grope Lane’. In the days before street lamps, people had to literally feel their way along the narrow and twisting lane, ‘groping’ their way along through the darkness at night. Many an affray erupted due to inappropriate groping, some of the fights proving fatal, leaving restless spirits still wandering their way along the little street. There is a terrifying yet very pretty spirit that appears on the lane as a warning of danger. This is the ghost of a young woman, Mary Clark, who was also known as ‘Bella’ because of her great beauty. Bella would brush whale oil into her hair three times a day, and was famous for her long golden locks. In the old Whitby Archives there is a fragment of a poem that recounts her plight:

‘Once a sweet bonnie lassie lived down on Grope Lane, So pretty, a fairy, ‘Bella’ her sweet name; A face like an angel’s, with long flaxen hair, She’d brush it with whale oil to keep it shining and fair...’ In those days it was common for households to take their cooking pots down to the local bakers where, for a penny fee, they would be placed in the bottom of the bread ovens. Bella would often take a pot of stew down the bakers on Grape Lane (now the second hand book shop) and later collect it for that evening’s family meal. Tragically, while removing the pot from the oven one evening, a single strand of hair uncurled from her headband and brushed upon the embers at the bottom of the oven. As the poem fragment puts it:

‘Her father, a fisherman, was bound for the sea, So a stew-pot she made up for his farewell tea, Such a good lassie, to her kith and kin true, Off she went down ‘the bakers with her jug of stew. Then back home again with an hour to spare-o She set with the whale oil and brushed through her hair-o, Flowing and curling, gold, flaxen and fair, She set with the whale oil through her long shining hair. Then back down to the bakers, her hair up in braids She opened the oven for the stew that she’d made, But just at that moment, one strand, it sprang free-o, Down past her shoulder, past hip, thigh and knee-o. So pretty, so bonnie, with long flaxen hair, One strand to an ember – beauty flamed to despair...’ Whale oil was highly flammable, being the main source of lighting fuel for house lamps at that time. Bella’s loose braid caught fire, flaming up past her shoulder like a fizzing fuse. Within moments, her whole head of hair had erupted into flames. She dropped the stew pot which smashed upon the stone floor and like a human candle, she fled out of the shop along the darkening lane, shrieking out, ‘My hair, my hair...oh my hair...’ From the flames of her hair, Bella’s clothes caught fire too, and though she was quickly doused with buckets of water by her neighbours, it was too late. She died in the local infirmary from her terrible burns that very night. To this day, on certain evenings, Bella’s spirit wanders up and down Grape Lane, her ghostly form illuminated with spectral flames. When sighted, she is heard whispering, over and over: ‘My hair, my hair... oh my beautiful hair...’ The stain of the stew she dropped in her terrible panic could never be removed from the stone flags of the old bakery. Rust red, like old blood, the stain is still there on the floor of the book shop. It’s just to the right of the serving counter. You don’t believe me? Well go and see it with you own eyes then - and perhaps the ghost of Bella too - if you dare! Chris Firth © 2016

Summer is a great time for leisurely evening walks, sandy sandwiches on the beach, barbeques and music festivals. It is also a perfect time to sell your home. Your property is never likely to look better than it does in the summer and, with long, light evenings ahead, the hours in which potential purchasers can view your accommodation in daylight are hugely increased compared to the short winter days. Also, this is the time of year when, if you are lucky enough to have a garden, you can really shout about it. Here is our guide to selling in the summer months:

KERB APPEAL IS KEY

Focus on the front of your home as kerb appeal is extremely important and a viewers first impression, as they are approaching your property, really counts. Make the area is as visually appealing as possible. If you have a front garden – make sure the lawns, plants and shrubs are all in good order. If you have a drive – make sure it is well kept. You can add some colour by adding some pots of pretty plants, or putting a bright hanging basket up. Common sense prevails and repairing that broken fence or gate, de-cluttering your front porch or trimming the hedges which surround your front lawn, can stop viewers from being distracted and ensure they are focusing on what they should be – how nice your house is!

BE FLEXIBLE

Of course, summer is a time you will be thinking about family holidays and weekend trips away but, when you are selling your home, it is wise to be as accommodating and as flexible as possible when it comes to viewings. It is advisable that vendors, even those who prefer to conduct viewings themselves, leave a key with their estate agent if they are heading away. It would be a shame to miss the perfect purchaser if they happen to come along when you are away on your travels.

KEEP UP APPEARANCES

It may seem very obvious but a good Spring (or should we say ‘Summer’) clean can ensure your accommodation is looking at its best. Also, opening all the doors and windows on a sunny day contributes to creating a light and airy feel to your home. If you are selling a flat, then making sure the communal areas are looking neat and tidy is important as, if viewers are turned off before they even walk through your apartment door, your chances of selling will drop like a lead balloon!

TIME TO GET THOSE FINGERS GREEN

Or even if you are not a keen gardener at least make sure all dead plants, weeds and leaves are removed. Cutting the lawn not only neatens up your outside space but also gives that lovely freshly-cut-grass smell! Garden furniture should be looking clean and a small touch, like throwing some colourful cushions onto your patio seats, can brighten up the area.

So many clients ask me on a regular basis “What can give my house that edge to make it stand out when it goes on the market?” Whilst it seems such a panic for people and somewhat daunting, my answer is simply don’t worry as there is a buyer for every property and generally the “feel” of the property will sell a house on top of it matching specific criteria. However, here are a few tips to help you feel more at ease and realise it really isn’t nearly as daunting as you may think.

What do I do next?

After deciding that you want to go ahead, any vendor will no doubt be running around like a headless chicken telling their family that under no circumstance can they even sit on the sofa with the ‘hand chopped’ cushions (which I know can be satisfying and makes you feel like a Jedi master!) and the symmetrical plumping of the large sofa cushions, along with the chair being “foofed” so much you cannot even sit on it comfortably... not to mention the “no fingerprints rule” on any gloss surface in the house because “they are coming to take pictures of the house today!” DON’T PANIC! There are much simpler steps to take to get your home ‘photo ready’.

Everybody’s home is lived in, unless you are selling a new build home and you have staged it. Prospective buyers are not going to expect a family home to be 100% immaculate throughout, especially if there are young children living there. So don’t beat yourself up about it. 9 times out of 10 people buy a house because it matches their criteria and it has a certain “feel” about it, and there is no nicer feel than a happy home. Don’t worry about the sticky Nutella fingerprint on the fridge front, it is not going to be a make or break decision on purchasing the house! What do I do to my home to get it photo ready? My advice is to follow these 5 simple steps :

1: Always open the blinds and let as much natural light flood the rooms.

2: De-clutter your surfaces, especially in bathrooms and kitchens. A kitchen is always a massive selling point for a house so if you have lots on the sides put them away for the purpose of the photos and any viewings. Same with the bathroom, we are all guilty of having half-used shampoo and bubble bath bottles around so clear them away and replace with a nice candle or decorative bath salts or get some decorative soaps in a glass bowl. A bathroom is a place to relax so the trick is to make it as relaxing and clutter free as possible. 3: If you have a wood burner or open fire light it. Everybody loves a real fire and it gives a real warmth to the house and makes people feel cosy and imagine themselves snuggled up on a cold winter’s night. 4: Fresh cut flowers add a decorative touch which looks and smells good making your home more inviting. It doesn’t need to be expensive either, I went into a house not long ago and they had Kilner jars with sweet peas dotted around and a glass bowl in the centre of the living room with peonies in and it made such a difference. Simple but effective. 5: Tidy the garden. Gardens again can have a huge impact on selling a house. If you have a large garden with lots of flowers and shrubs just cut them back and make it neat and tidy. Large gardens are wonderful but if they seem overgrown and like a jungle people can be put off just by the sheer work that needs doing. If you have a garden that really is just lawn or terraced then add a splash of colour with decorative planters and colourful flowers.

Here comes summer... part two - seasonal allergies The Beck Veterinary Practice

Last month we discussed the delightful flea and how it can set up camp around your home, making your beloved pet extremely uncomfortable. But did you know your dog or cat can suffer from seasonal allergies just as you do? According to a survey conducted by Novartis Animal Health, over half of pet owners aren’t aware their fuzzy family members can also spend the spring and summer seasons feeling miserable thanks to pollens and other environmental allergens. This can cause them to itch and scratch as if they have fleas. The main two allergies are food and environmental. If your pet gets itchy during spring or summer, they’re probably reacting to seasonal, environmental allergens. But if their symptoms continue year-round, it’s more likely that their sensitivity is due to something in their diet. One exception to this is when seasonal allergies progress to chronic year-round allergies, which we’ll cover later. In people, seasonal allergy symptoms usually involve the respiratory tract. In dogs and cats it more often takes the form of skin irritation. This is called allergic dermatitis. If your pet has allergies, their skin will become very itchy and they’ll start scratching excessively. It is common that pets will rub their face along the carpet, chew at paws and use corners of furniture to itch on. They are trying to relieve the miserable itchiness by any means possible. As the excessive itch-scratch cycle continues, the skin becomes inflamed, and sometimes areas of hair loss, open sores and scabbing occur. Pets with allergies also often have problems with their ears. The ear canals may be itchy and inflamed as part of a generalized allergic response, which in turn may grow infected with yeast or bacteria. Signs your pet’s ears are giving them problems include scratching at the ears, head shaking and hair loss around the ears. If infection is present the ears will smell bad and be excessively dirty. Allergic reactions are produced by your pet’s immune system. The way their immune system functions is a result of both their genetics and environment. In practice, the following often happens. A young puppy begins with a little red tummy, itchy ears, and maybe a mild infection in one ear. His regular vet treats the pup symptomatically to provide it some relief. The next year when the weather warms up, the pet is brought back with very itchy feet, another ear infection, and some hair loss. Again, the vet treats the symptoms until the weather turns cold and the signs disappear. Year three and the same pet suffers from May through September with red, inflamed skin, some hair loss, frequent ear and skin infections, and a tendency to chew their 86

paws or scratch until he bleeds. By year five, all the symptoms have grown significantly worse and the animal’s suffering is now year-round. The pet’s regular vet continues to treat the symptoms rather then to find the cause. This is what usually happens with seasonal environmental allergies. The more your pet is exposed to the allergens they are sensitive to, the more intense and long-lasting his allergic response becomes. Here at Beck Veterinary Practice, we want what is best for both pet and owner. From the outset, we aim to address the potential root causes at the first sign of an allergic response. We do this to reduce the risk of an escalating response year after year. Be assured our vets will become Sherlock Holmes and work along side you through a process of elimination to find the main cause (or causes!) of your pet’s allergies. Come and visit us if your are concerned and any if of the indicators sound familiar. Although we want to treat the symptoms and help relieve your pet’s discomfort, we are not about a quick, short-term fix and want to get to the bottom of the problem. A few common treatments, most of which you can do at home, include: • Frequent baths give complete, immediate relief to an itchy pet by washing away the allergens on the coat and skin. A range or special shampoos are available from us, your vet will advise the most appropriate one for your pet. • Foot soaks are a great way to reduce the amount of allergens your pet tracks into the house and spreads all over her indoor environment. • Keep the areas of your home where your pet spends most of it’s time as allergen-free as possible. Vacuum and clean floors and pet bedding frequently using simple, non-toxic cleaning agents rather than household cleaners containing chemicals. • Changes of routine (e.g. you may walk your dog past field full of a certain culprit allergen). • A change to a specialist anti-inflammatory or hypoallergenic prescription diet, various types and flavours are availble from the practice. • Individually formulated allergy vaccines to help reduce sensitivity.
