Whitby slimmers lose lbs and raise £s for charity! Caring members of the Sneaton Castle and Eastside Community Centre Slimming World groups have bagged up their clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Jo and Sal, weight loss Consultants who run the Whitby Slimming World groups, encouraged members, their friends and families in Whitby to spring-clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for the Whitby Cancer Research UK shop. The groups, in Whitby have lost a stunning 487 stone since January this year, were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the ‘Big Slimming

World Clothes Throw’. Last year Slimming World’s Big Clothes Throw raised £1.7m for Cancer Research UK, and this year the organisation aims to raise £2m for the charity. With each bag worth up to £25, hopes the contribution from the Whitby groups will help to reach that total. “The incredible members of our groups have amazed us with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and we can’t believe just how many bags my members, their friends and families have managed to collect for Cancer Research UK. It’s been so rewarding and we are so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause!”

Whitby Area Musical Theatre Company Celebrating 50 years with ‘Something Wonderful’ 50 years ago, in September 1966 an advert, placed in the Whitby Gazette by David Richardson, led to the formation of the Whitby Amateur Operatic Society, and in May 1967 “The Pirates of Penzance” by Gilbert and Sullivan was presented for 4 nights at Caedmon School. By the following year the society had expanded enough to become affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association and, changing its name to Whitby Area Musical Theatre Company in the late1990s, the group has now staged musical shows in Whitby continuously for half a century.

The Company would like to invite everyone who has been associated with these productions over the years, as actor, singer, dancer, director, musician, stage crew, wardrobe team, chaperone, subscriber, or in any other way - to join them in a very special 50 year celebration. The Celebration begins with a concert, “Something Wonderful ~ 50 Musical Years” which opens at the Whitby Pavilion Theatre on Thursday 2nd June 2016 with a repeat peformance on Friday 3rd June. Both performances start at 7.30pm and feature a compilation of some of the most memorable songs from the shows that the Company has presented since 1967. Celebrations will continue on Saturday 4th June with a Gala Day, for which the Company is in the process of planning a series of activities and/or workshops followed by a dinner in the Northern Lights Suite at the Whitby Pavilion. STRANGE WHITBY TALES....

The Black Eyed Lass & The Aislaby Waif Whitby has a plethora of child ghosts. In the past it was much more common for children to perish than it is now. People were not as healthy and children died in epidemics of chickenpox, measles or scarlet fever. Fatal work accidents involving child labourers in the jet workshops and fishing yards were not unusual. Times have changed remarkably for our children – the young ones were not so lucky and pampered once upon a time. The Black Eyed Lass of Columban woods has mysterious origins. She became a common sighting last century with the opening of the nearby Caedmon School. The Lass is said to be the spirit of a girl murdered in the 19th century by a roving Punch and Judy man, Mad John Dory, one of the country’s first serial killers. Entranced by the girl’s beautiful, shining eyes, he attacked her, gouged her eyes out then set them in one of his puppets for a special effect in his evening show. When The Lass is sighted, often by middle aged couples, she is sobbing and crying amidst the trees, her back turned as they approach. She is always dressed in an old fashioned white dress. Her long black hair is neatly plaited. As the couple approach to try and comfort the distressed child she stops sobbing then spins around, her hands covering her face. She starts laughing like a maniac, her face still covered. The alarmed couple take a step back. It is then that she drops her hands and stares at them - with terrifying pits of black hollows where her shining eyes should be. The couple inevitably scream in terror and flee from the woods. It is not uncommon for those who see The Black Eyed Lass to have their hair turn white with the shock of the encounter – hence, so it is said, that there are so many white haired folk in Whitby these days. The spirit of another child is known to haunt the attics and cellars of The Forge, a pleasant hostelry up in Aislaby. The Aislaby Waif is sometimes sighted, although she is more often 44

heard. The sound of a bouncing ball comes from the attics, faint and soft - a dull bump... thump... bump - followed by the padding of footsteps over the floor boards as she runs to retrieve her ball. Then there is a clatter and banging on the stairs themselves, as though someone goes tumbling down, head over heels. The daughter of an 18th Century inn owner, The Waif is said to have been locked up in the attic or cellars whenever he had business to attend to around the county. A widower, he could not afford a maid to look after his lonely daughter. She would be in the tavern ‘home-alone’ for days on end, with nothing to do but peek out of the windows and bounce her beloved rubber ball. One day her ball span out of control and went bouncing down the stairs. She ran after if but tripped on the hem of her ankle length dress. She went tumbling down the staircase – some say the attic, others the cellar – snapping her little neck in the terrible fall. Those who have spied The Waif peeping out of the high window all say the same thing: she looks sad, pale and lonely, but is wearing a lovely dress that shimmers with stripes of gold, amber and bronze. The Forge Waif never causes any trouble or harm but there she sits, bouncing her ball. Set yourself in the front bar there, while enjoying a fine drink and a lovely meal, but listen out between any lulls in the bar chatter. You’re sure to hear her. Bump... thump... bump, then the padding of soft light footsteps. The Waif’s ball is bouncing in her long, lonely game; bouncing over and over, right down through time. Chris Firth © 2016

It’s May and the sun is out (occasionally!) so many people are now beginning to house-hunt. Searching for the right property can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack sometimes. With Rightmove and Zoopla displaying hundreds and hundreds of different properties - where do you begin? There are lots of articles giving advice to people trying to sell so here is some help for people trying to buy. This quick guide to searching for, and viewing, suitable properties to aid you in finding your ideal home/investment.

WHEN SEARCHING...

DON’T WASTE YOUR ENERGY DROOLING OVER PROPERTIES THAT ARE NOT IN YOUR PRICE RANGE It will cloud your thinking and could waste valuable time. Do not forget to factor in stamp duty and solicitor’s fees when thinking about what price range you want to search within. Work out how much you can afford and stick to your limit. DON’T SEARCH IN TOO WIDE A GEOGRAPHICAL AREA

It is a good idea to begin with your first-choice area and shift your focus if you have no joy there. Obviously take commute times to work, distance from schools etc into consideration when choosing the area for you. DON’T TAKE TOO RIGID A VIEW OF HOW MANY BEDROOMS YOU REQUIRE

A lot of properties have surprisingly flexible layouts. DON’T ASSUME THAT IF A PROPERTY HAS NOT SOLD FOR SEVERAL MONTHS THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT

There more than likely isn’t! The right person, in the right position, has not come along. On the bright side the vendor may be more amenable to offers. So never disregard a property just because it has been on the market a little while. ARE THERE RESTRICTIONS?

Is there a National Parks Occupancy Restriction which would prevent you from being eligible to purchase it? Are you wanting to holiday let and yet there are restrictions on commercial use in the Lease? Important things to check before booking a

viewing. Always have a good look over the details before arranging closer inspection. DON’T EXPECT TO FIND A PLACE THAT IS PERFECT IN EVERY RESPECT

It doesn’t exist. There will always be some kind of compromise to be made. But you can find a place very close to your perfect accommodation with research and perseverance.

WHEN VIEWING…

There is an art to viewing a property – dawdle for a few hours and you will be exhausted after viewing 3 houses, whizz around in 5 minutes and you will miss vital details. Here are a few quick tips: FOCUS

Size up the strengths and weaknesses. After you have had a good look and got a feel for the place then put any questions you may have to the agent/ vendor. DON’T VIEW TOO MANY

Seeing 12 properties on a Saturday afternoon will confuse you. Narrow your shortlist down to your favourites and view those. Some find taking brief notes as they go around helps them remember what they have seen. TAKE A GOOD LOOK AT THE EXTERNAL AREAS

Have a walk around the gardens and consider how easy they will be to maintain. If you were hoping to extend then check if there is sufficient space to do so and make sure there isn’t anything in the property’s history /location which may make it difficult to carry out the renovation work. GET TO KNOW THE AREA

Have a wander around, a bite to eat in the local cafes and restaurants and a drink in the local pub (any excuse!) to really get a feel for the area. It is important to be able to imagine yourself living there. Searching for a property can be physically and mentally draining but if you learn to sift out the wheat from the chaff efficiently you can take a lot of hassle out of the process.

Surveys are bewildering for most people at the best of times. Should you choose a homebuyer’s or a full structural survey? Hopefully the following information will help explain the importance of home surveys and what’s available. You’ve found the home of your dreams but before you get swept away, it’s important to ensure the property is not going to crumble around you. People are often seduced by the way a property looks and feels and then ignore peeling paint, crumbling bricks or gurgling pipes. But a few hundred pounds spent on a property survey could save thousands of pounds later on. A survey should also highlight potential flaws in a property, which could help when negotiating the price.

Where do I start?

Most buyers rely on a mortgage lender’s valuation. This will reveal serious defects that are likely to affect the property’s value but it is only a cursory look at a home by the mortgage lender, to ensure it is worth the money.

What is the process?

A valuation is usually a straightforward process. The surveyor will check the property and assess the value based on its general condition, the value of homes recently sold in the area and the buoyancy of the housing market. The report will contain a summary of the condition and comments on any general faults that may exist. This valuation is probably enough if purchasing a new build but if you are buying an older property, then it is worth having a more comprehensive survey carried out.

What sort of survey should I have?

There are two main kinds of survey, which are recognised by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (www.rics.org) – a homebuyer’s

or a building survey. Both are carried out by chartered surveyors. A homebuyer’s survey is more detailed than a valuation report. Like the valuation, the survey will check the general condition of the property and any major faults, as well as urgent problems that need specialist advice. It will test for damp in walls, damage to timbers and the condition of damp-proofing. It also covers insulation and drainage, plus the estimated cost of rebuilding the property for insurance purposes, along with the value of the home on the open market. This survey is not suitable for properties needing renovation or major alterations. For these kinds of projects, a full structural survey or building survey is required, although an in depth building survey can be performed on any property. It highlights major issues, as well as minor defects and the cost of repairs, technical information on the construction of the property, the materials used, plus the location.

Should I have a survey?

A survey is similar to a health check for your new home. While it may seem like an unnecessary cost, it’s the equivalent of a full check-up, so you know exactly what you’re buying and its value. It is worth paying a few hundred pounds now to save on unexpected expenditure and hassle in the future. Some homeowners will invest in a survey before putting their property on the market. This is an effective way to identify any issues that might need to be addressed before the property is listed with an estate agent and may accelerate the sale process. It also shows potential buyers that you care about your home and have done everything possible to ensure it is ready for the new owner.

Here comes summer... and some unwelcomed guests? The Beck Veterinary Practice

With summer on the horizon, you and your pets are finally coming out of hibernation to enjoy the longer days and warmer weather. But it’s not only you that becomes more active... various parasites, which like to use your beloved animals (and homes!) as a place to live, feed and breed also increase in prevalence at this time of year. One of the best known creepy crawlies is of course the flea. Most owners are blissfully unaware of how common this little blighter is and would be horrified to think that their ‘Lucky’ is playing host to fleas. It is not something that owner’s should be embarrassed about as all animals have the potential to easily catch them. It is estimated that 75% of domestic pets will catch fleas at some point in their life. From May through until October, fleas become at least 20% more active and we would actively like to encourage owners to try and prevent flea problems as prevention is defiantly easier and more pleasant than cure. It must be remembered that fleas can be a problem even in a spotless home and on the cleanest pet. Fleas are a parasite and there are different species such as dog fleas, cat fleas, rabbit fleas and even human fleas! Many species can infest more than one host species. The cat flea, Ctenocephalides felis, is one of the most abundant and widespread species of flea on Earth and is the cause of the majority of cases seen at the vets. Fleas only suck blood from their hosts as adults. A flea can live from between 14 days to one year and a female can lay up to 50 eggs in one day. Fleas cannot fly but use their amazing hind limbs to leap more than a hundred times their own body length. That’s the same as an average human jumping over a thirty storey building!

So, here are a few signs to watch out for: • Is your pet scratching? • Can you see tiny dark specks in its fur? • Are there small browny-black insects scurrying about in their coat? • Do you have any unaccounted for insect bites yourself? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions – it could mean fleas. Don’t panic, just give us a visit! To confirm fleas we will groom your pet with a fine-tooth comb held over white surface - any fleas or droppings will fall on the surface. A few drops of water are then added and if the specks turn reddish brown it means 92

fleas as their poo in mainly digested blood. It is important to try and prevent fleas as bites can not only make your pet very uncomfortable and itchy but they can also bring a host of other unpleasant problems. Pets can be hypersensitive to flea saliva and suffer an allergic reaction. Flea larvae can also become infected with tapeworm eggs, which means if your pet eats an infected flea it can become host to this parasite. If your pet has fleas you should also make sure your pet is treated for worms. Fleas feed on blood, so young, small or frail animals can quickly become weak and even die as a result of blood loss. These are all good reasons to be flea aware and not to be embarrassed. If you think there is a problem, come along and get it checked out sooner rather then later (we don’t bite... well, not as much as fleas!) Should your pet acquire fleas, treat both them and your home, as fleas can survive without a host for many months. Clean bedding regularly on a high temperature wash; vacuum furniture, floors and skirting boards to help destroy fleas at each stage of their lifecycle. Areas under radiators and around pet beds should be concentrated on. Here is a nice thought....It is estimated that 95 % of flea eggs, larvae and pupae live in the environment, not on your pet. Other supermarket treatments may be a wee bit cheaper but do not work as well as they simply do not contain the latest active substances at necessary levels. Please remember only give your pet flea treatment that has been recommended for them. Products suitable for one species may not be suitable for another e.g. some dog flea treatments contain permethrin, an insecticide that is safe for dogs but highly toxic to cats.
