We are celebrating our 10th birthday! Back in 2006, I decided to produce a magazine to give local businesses a cost-effective way of advertising to everybody in Whitby and surrounding areas. Starting from scratch was scary, yet exciting and after much hard work, canvassing businesses and doing the artwork myself, 10,000 copies were printed, which I handdelivered – that’s how the Whitby Advertiser was born! I have learned so much over the last 10 years, and my passion for local businesses has grown along with the Whitby Advertiser, now a quality and well-respected magazine, and the number one choice for advertisers in the Whitby and surrounding areas, with a distribution today of 22,000 copies, hand-delivered by a team of 15 dedicated people. In our office at the Green Lane Centre, you will find Peter Cooper, who looks after the accounts and administration for the business and works with Graham Ambler, our graphic designer who designs and creates the artwork for our advertisers, and collates our magazine each month.

So why is the Whitby Advertiser a success? Our magazine is free, and now goes far beyond the Whitby area, with deliveries in the Loftus, Guisborough and Saltburn areas. It doesn’t have the pitfalls of local radio advertising such as the poor reception experienced in many of our rural areas. The Whitby Advertiser is valued by many as a handy reference guide for local tradespeople, businesses and services. Information about local community groups, charitable organisations and their events can be found too, giving the magazine a truly local heart. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone over the past 10 years who has made the Whitby Advertiser the success that it is today. I particularly think of the late Pam Rogers and her hard work in setting up our office systems in the early days, and our past graphic designers who put their heart and soul into our past issues. Whitby Area Musical Theatre Company Celebrating 50 years with ‘Something Wonderful’ 50 years ago, in September 1966 an advert, placed in the Whitby Gazette by David Richardson, led to the formation of the Whitby Amateur Operatic Society, and in May 1967 “The Pirates of Penzance” by Gilbert and Sullivan was presented for 4 nights at Caedmon School. By the following year the society had expanded enough to become affiliated to the National Operatic and Dramatic Association and, changing its name to Whitby Area Musical Theatre Company in the late1990s, the group has now staged musical shows in Whitby continuously for half a century.

The Company would like to invite everyone who has been associated with these productions over the years, as actor, singer, dancer, director, musician, stage crew, wardrobe team, chaperone, subscriber, or in any other way - to join them in a very special 50 year celebration. The Celebration begins with a concert, “Something Wonderful ~ 50 Musical Years” which opens at the Whitby Pavilion Theatre on Thursday 2nd June 2016 with a repeat peformance on Friday 3rd June. Both performances start at 7.30pm and feature a compilation of some of the most memorable songs from the shows that the Company has presented since 1967. Celebrations will continue on Saturday 4th June with a Gala Day, for which the Company is in the process of planning a series of activities and/or workshops followed by a dinner in the Northern Lights Suite at the Whitby Pavilion. A truly beautiful though somewhat slightly sinister place, there is a whole collection of stories associated with this wood alone. Wade, the ancient pagan giant, is said to be buried there. The fearsome Pad Pad - one third goat, one third panther, one third something resembling human - stalks about the ruined castle. The Ugthorpe Snakeboy - top half human, lower half snake - was found in a ploughed field at the wood’s edge. And perhaps, most famous of all, there is Jeannie, an ancient woodland spirit. Sometimes Jeannie is depicted as a crooked old hag, others as a young woman, a beautiful May Queen, full of vibrancy and fertile promise. The tale of ‘the hag’ of Mulgrave Woods is said to have inspired Robert Burns’s famous poem, ‘Tam o Shanter’, and there are similarities between that ballad and one of the tales of Jeannie. Loud Michael was a wild rover, or a handsome knight, or a young buck upstart looking for a wealthy bride (depending on who is telling the tale). Having heard in Whitby that Jeannie was pretty and had a secret stash of treasure, he went into the woods on a white stallion to seek her out and to claim her for his wife. Jeannie, however, was a secretive and private spirit. She lived in a hidden cave in the depths of the woods, way beyond the old hill fort. In her chosen home she worked nature into potions and medicines which she distributed free amongst the poor and needy of the district. Those who benefitted from her potions never actually saw Jeannie - she always left her gifts on the sill of the door or on a window ledge. She worked silently and invisibly in the woods, left alone by the grateful local folk to do as she pleased. Jeannie did not take kindly to Loud Michael’s amorous intention when, after much searching, he found her secret home. Calling out her name, shouting that he’d come to marry her, he boldly rode toward her cave. Jeannie was infuriated by his intrusion and presumptions. She rushed from the cave mouth, moving so quickly that the rover could barely see her through the blur of movement. He knew that he was in danger though - in her fury she was a speeding cloud of tentacles, razor claws and flashing white teeth. He didn’t bother hanging 38

around but was away, fleeing back down the woods on his terrified steed. The horse was fast, but Jeannie was as quick, lashing her claws at stallion and rider as they bolted. The poor horse came to an open lane but still Jeannie gave chase. Through his panic Loud Michael remembered a tip that one of the tipsyeyed townsfolk had given him in The White House, a hostelry back in Whitby, when he had announced that he was going to the woods to claim Jeannie as his bride. ‘Well,’ the old fisherman had drawled. ‘If she don’t like the look of you and she do come on after you, remember this: fairies and witches and goblins and ghouls don’t never like to cross over no running water, no. Now, mine’s a jar of Black Dog, please.’

With this confusing utterance in mind, Michael steered his stallion along the valley toward the fast flowing stream there. He came to a bank with a gap of twenty feet to clear across to the other side. He knew that he must make the leap, or die. Jeannie’s fangs were scraping at the skin of his spine as he urged his horse into the leap. With a final shriek, Jeannie lashed out with her claws, cutting the stallion clean in two. The rear of the creature fell to the water, legs still kicking away. The front half, with Michael clinging on for dear life, cleared the stream and crashed onto the far bank. Battered and bruised, Michael leapt to his feet and ran into the trees, sprinting all the way to Whitby without stopping or looking back once.

Jeannie, somewhat saddened about the poor horse but glad to be rid of her pesky visitor, took a slow, deep breath and calmed back into her normal self. She returned to her cave and the healing potions she’d been working on all that May morning. And right there, in the heart of Mulgrave Woods, Jeannie remained very happy until the end of her eternal days. Chris Firth © 2016

BREXIT - IN OR OUT?

For those of us with an eye on current affairs and how they affect both our local town and the country in general, there is only really one topic of conversation at the moment. And whilst I will take this opportunity to wish the Whitby Advertiser a very happy 10th birthday, no it isn’t that. Nor is it the forthcoming Tour De Yorkshire, excited as we all are by its return to our lovely town and area. No it is Europe – in or out. With the referendum due to take place on 23rd June, how will it manifest itself upon the housing market? Well, to be honest, as with all things related to this hot topic, the industry is not sure. They feel more certain about what will happen if we stay, less so if we leave. I have read a couple of industry blogs on OnTheMarket.com, the newest property portal of which Astin Estate Agents are the only local representative, and they make an interesting read. If you have the time, take a look on the website and you will find the blogs section by scrolling down to the bottom. There are many interesting propertyrelated articles as well the ones above, so it’s well worth a visit to the website. However if you haven’t the time, a quick summary might be as follows. If we stay IN there is one certainty, that there will be a lot less uncertainty. No worst-case scenarios, more or less back to business as

usual for better or worse. Undoubtedly the referendum will, as with most elections, cause a lull in the market before picking up afterwards but if everything stays the same afterwards most of the property professionals expect things to carry on as normal. As one says in the blog “the weather in Wimbledon will still be the same”. In the event of a BREXIT, as with other aspects of leaving the EU, it is a bit less clear and open to speculation. For us here in Whitby, let’s be honest, it probably will have little to no effect in the short to medium term. People will still live and work, people will still come on holiday. The effect will probably be more long term with how industry fares if we leave, how the economy will do – and greater brains than mine can’t agree on this, so I won’t even try to speculate. One thing most property experts agree on however is in the property world, the greatest effect will be on London from the overseas investors and around the financial hub there. Will the big firms move out of London to Europe, will there be a “brain drain”, will the market surge ahead freed from the shackles of EU regulation, will investors still want a London pad, all of these come into the mix. And like it or not, here in the North, that will affect us. So there it is, clear as mud to you, I am sure! And as it says in the blogs, one thing is certain, that until a decision is taken nobody can feel entirely confident on what the future will hold. Only time will tell. Regards

BRICKS vs CLICKS

A growing number of Online Estate Agents have burst onto the scene offering to sell properties at rock-bottom prices. Adverts from these companies have filled day-time advert breaks and left people wondering – why would I pay more for a high street Estate Agent when online agents say they can sell my house for as little as £400? The popularity of Online Estate agents has not taken off as quickly as predicted and, in most areas of the country, they have had little impact on High Street Agents. This could be mainly down to the fact that there is much more to selling a house than placing basic details on a few property portals. So what are the differences between these 2 types of agent and who should people trust to handle their most important financial transaction.

PERSONAL SERVICE

High Street Agents- Allow the luxury of being able to walk into an office and get advice from an experienced member of staff in person. At Hendersons our office is open on weekends and until 7pm on week-days meaning we’re available to see our clients at times which work around their work schedules and busy lives. Online Agents– Many operate from nation-wide call centres, meaning customers will often converse over the phone with someone without local knowledge and face-to-face meetings are not an option.

MARKETING

High Street Agents- A good agent will pay a visit to measure rooms, draw a floorplan and take the most attractive photographs possible to ensure the accommodation is being marketing to its full potential and standing out from the crowd. Online Agents- Again, it varies. However, many request owners take their own photographs and floorplans are often none-existent.

VIEWINGS

High Street Agents – Will happily take care of viewings meaning that whether vendors are busy, on holiday or at work, viewings can take place. A member of staff with first-hand knowledge of the property can show potential buyers around and answer any questions they may have.

Online Agents – Different companies offer different packages but the majority arrange viewings but usually leave property owners to carry them out.

VALUATIONS

High Street Agents – Spend time carrying out research, looking over comparables and visiting homes to ensure that the right market price is set. Many potential sellers opt to have valuations carried out by several local agents before making a decision on which is best suited to them and their accommodation. Online Agents – Sometimes send out a representative, usually from from out of the area, but also often value using just online data.

FEES

Online agents will always beat High Street Agents hands-down when it comes to fees. An office, advertising on major portals, experienced staff able to effectively conduct viewings and carry out valuations, interactive touch screens, keeping a modern and evolving agency website running, LED window displays, newspaper advertising, professional photographs, and all the many other services a really good high street agent will offer, can not be done for a few hundreds pounds. Would an online agent offer value for money? A high street agent is not just trying to sell their vendor’s properties – but trying to sell them for the best possible price for the owner. This can be most easily and effectively achieved by an experienced negotiator. Also, bear in mind an online agent will likely ask for an up-front fee as opposed to the no-sale-no-fee approach meaning they have been paid regardless of whether they manage to sell the property or not and regardless of what price. Anyone confused about what type of agent to use would be best advised, as a starting point, to look online at the quality of marketing different agents offer. Also, researching into the services they offer, as well as the level of market exposure, could set you well on the way to deciding between bricks and clicks.

Hedgehog Awareness

The Beck Veterinary Practice

It is hedgehog awareness week 1st-7th May 2016.

What does this mean for the general public? Do you know which hedgehogs need help and which should be left alone. Hedgehogs that need help are; Orphaned hoglets – found out of the nest in the day, or when the nest has been destroyed and the mother killed or injured. Injured hedgehog – with open wounds, fractures, bites, burns, or trapped in some way. Sick hedgehogs - usually found out in the day, thin, dehydrated. Hedgehogs that are unsteady on their feet (wobbling, rocking) and ones with flies around them. Autumn juveniles – young hedgehogs born late in the year. It is normal for healthy hedgehogs to arouse from hibernation for short periods even in winter weather, do not assume these hedgehogs need help unless they are underweight or obviously unwell. Hedgehogs that should be left alone: Adult females in summer uninjured but found out in daylight (these can be nursing mothers), any large

uninjured hedgehogs found (eg crossing the road) and picked up “for safety” by well meaning people should be put back away from the road but near where found. Every year many hedgehogs are seriously injured or killed by cutting machines in the garden. Please check grass and hedges thoroughly before using mowers, strimmers or hedge cutters. We have recently microchipped 22 hedgehogs that have over wintered in the care of Alex Farmer from Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary. This is so she can track their movements and see if any are returned to her injured or unwell in the future.
