Our magazine certainly taps into the Christmas spirit this month as many hotels and restaurants advertise their Christmas parties and meals and retailers their Christmas gifts and deals - have you booked your office or works party yet or started your Christmas shopping? If not, have a look through the following pages for ideas and inspiration and you could soon be sorted! ICE RINK COMES TO WHITBY!

We Are Whitby will round off the two week Whitby at Christmas Festival, and start the countdown to Christmas 2016 with what promises to be a unique community get together. The Whitby Winterfest set outside and in the warmth and comfort of the Whitby Pavilion, is sure to be a major Christmas attraction for Yorkshire. We Are Whitby Chair James Fearnley commented : “We are especially excited about this year’s Christmas event, not only will we have our landmark beach huts, but this year we are bringing an Ice Rink to Whitby! The ice rink will be located outside on the Pavilion car park along with food, drink and entertainment. We are also delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has chosen to support this truly community event which has enabled some of our local community groups to show case their work without cost to them. We want this event to become a major annual Yorkshire attraction at Christmas time, not just for the Whitby Community, but for all the many visitors and people in the region who love our unique town and community “ Winterfest will be free to enter and activities will commence at 6pm on Friday 2nd December at Pannett Park where the Weird, Wonderful and Wacky

Winterwear lantern parade will be led by Santa and a special guest, chauffeur driven in an open top vintage car, directly to the Pavilion to officially open Winterfest. NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS COASTAL CYCLE CHALLENGE

This year’s event took place on the 2nd October. The weather, as in previous years, was the best it could possibly be. Dry and very fine, with conditions on the surface good, although odd pools of water had to be contended with. There were 123 entries, with 12 not starting and 7 who did not finish the 38 mile course, leaving 104 cyclists who can give themselves a big pat on the back for finishing the route. The view from the last check point on Stoupe Brow over the bay near the end is a welcome and spirit lifting sight, knowing it

he had six months off work with cancer of the oesophagus this really is a great achievement. In 2nd place was Michael Knight from Whitby in 2.47 and 3rd was Andy Duncan from Scarborough in 2.52. The longest time was 5.55 by David Flett and Isobel Corey from Hunmanby who had come on a sightseeing trip. There were no serious injuries or casualties reported. Well done to all entrants. Once again we have received many encouraging comments from a number of sources and we try to improve it every year. The catering is a work of art by the dedicated staff who slave over hot ovens and our check point staff do a fantastic job. The event would not be possible without these and many others who come together on the day to contribute to the, we hope, smooth operation. They have my heartfelt thanks. They give of their time freely and without them there would be no event. If you would like to volunteer your help next year I’ll be glad to hear from you. The Whitby Advertiser have again been extremely generous by allowing me to place an entry form on their pages. Many thanks to them. All surplus funds are donated to Fylingdales Village Hall which provides facilities for all of the local community, young and old. This year it was £750. Next year’s event, the 6th, will take place on Sunday 1st October, 2017.

STRANGE WHITBY TALES....

Whitby’s Most Haunted House? Bagdale Hall today is somewhat lost in the clutter of buildings around the bus station and the end of Baxtergate. In its prime as a residence, in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, it stood alone in vast grounds and gardens, a magnificent home covered in vines and ivy. The family who owned the hall, the Newtons, ran into financial difficulties and had to sell off some the lands surrounding it, and eventually they had to sell the house itself. Other buildings sprang up on the lands, crowding in on the old hall. Just to look at it evokes a sense of the past, and to enter the building with its magnificent furnishings and decor is like taking a step back into history. Such a house inevitably comes with its clutch of ghosts, and there is little doubt that Bagdale Hall is haunted. There is almost definitely a poltergeist in residence, and though said to be harmless enough, it is fond of mischief. The fabulous ‘Whitby Lore and Legend’, by Shaw Jeffrey, a relatively recent owner of the hall, comments: ‘When the new owners took over the house in 1916 they were warned that it had rather a sinister reputation, and that it would be difficult to induce local domestics to live in it. The most reputed ghost, evidently a Poltergeist, manifested itself in various ways. Loud crashes were heard from time to time. Coming apparently from the kitchen china cupboard, these sounds persisted even after the cupboard had been pulled down.’ The sound of plates and cutlery crashing to the floor are still heard regularly in the kitchen area, but when the alarmed staff rush to investigate everything is in place, not even a cup or saucer broken. A dog, reputed to be the hunting hound of one of the hall’s early owners, Captain Isaac Newton, also haunts the building. The dog, a fine greyhound, was seized on old Whitby Bridge by Newton’s business rival, Sir Hugh Chomley. For reasons unknown, though said to be connected to supernatural motivations, the greyhound was hanged like a murderer in the ruins of Whitby Abbey. The fallout over this hound’s death created a great feud between the Newton and Chomley families. The dog itself is said to have cursed both families, which led to their downfalls and ruin. (Greyhounds were originally known as ‘gazehounds’ – the sound and spelling became corrupted - for they use their eyes when hunting and are said to be able to look into the souls of men!). Every full moon, so it is said, the ‘gazehound’ is heard scampering up and down the staircase, softly whining for its long lost 48

master before padding its way out into the night and skulking back up to the abbey. Guests and residents regularly hear the central staircase of the old hall creaking and bumping in the night, as though people are rushing up and down in some great family crisis. Yet, if anyone dares peep out of their bedroom door to see what is going on... nothing. The ghostly traffic seems to be invisible. The ghost of a famous Whitby character, Brown Bushell, also roamed about Bagdale Hall’s kitchens and corridors. A war hero at the time of the English Civil War, Brown Bushell fell foul of Oliver Cromwell over some treachery (apparently he was a side-switcher). He was captured and tortured then beheaded. Head under arm, he was said to prowl the kitchens and corridors, nipping and pinching the serving girls and lady visitors, especially the pretty younger ones. Such was his mischief that the owners could never retain maids for long – until a local wise-woman made a sensible and practical suggestion. The owners took to hiring maids of over a certain age and who were not blessed in the looks or figure department. This seemed to work. Brown Bushell, with his roving eye, never bothered the new, stouter, more mature maids or servants. Once a side-switcher, always a side-switcher: his spirit is said to have taken itself across the road to a building that now hosts the town’s busiest nightclub. It is said that Bushell now does his haunting there almost unnoticed, nipping and pinching and, like most men in nightclubs, being generally annoying and unmemorable once the night of merriment has passed. To this day, among the townsfolk who work in the hotel and restaurant, there are rumours about strange noises and goings on, and there are certain upstairs rooms where a ‘presence’ can be felt. There is said to be a gloomy, foreboding feeling in some rooms; a feeling so powerful that some staff refuse to enter them. Fortunately, this cannot be said of the dining rooms and bar area on the lower floors, which though dripping with history, are bright and cheerful, and where wonderful meals and fine wines are served to guests who return time after time to savour the atmosphere of Whitby’s most haunted house. Visit it, if you dare, to experience the wonderful hospitality. But best remain on the lower floors if you are of a nervous or sensitive disposition! Chris Firth © 2016

In the next few months there is a lot to look forward to! Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas and New Year bring us all out to celebrate. But while lots of us find these times fun, they can be a huge source of stress, worry and anxiety for many pets and owners alike. It is estimated that a minimum of 45 per cent of dogs in the UK show signs of fear on varying levels when they hear fireworks. However, don’t ignore the problem as firework phobia is a treatable condition and animals don’t have to suffer such misery every year. There are numerous simple things which can be done throughout the year to help prepare as well as things to do at the time. On celebration nights, it’s best to close the curtains, windows and turn the television or radio up. This will block out any scary flashes of light and reduce the noise level of fireworks. Try to act as normal, as your four legged friend will pick up on any odd behaviour. Remain calm, happy and cheerful as this will send positive signals to your dog. Reward calm behaviour with dog treats or playing with toys of interest. Walk your dog before dusk before any fireworks will start. It may be some time before it’s safe to venture outside again for your dog to relieve himself. This will also avoid trick or treaters; keep a firm grip on the lead as many dogs are frightened by people in costumes and could potentially react aggressively through fear. Also, feed your dog a while before you expect any disturbances, as once the fireworks start they may be too anxious to eat. Shut your dog safely inside a room before opening external doors. Keep a collar and ID tag on your dog, just in case they do accidentally escape. Make sure your dog is microchipped too, as if he or she does escape this will in reunited you as quickly as possible and it is a legal requirement. Don’t forget to block off cat flaps to stop dogs (and cats) escaping. Make a safe den for your dog to retreat to if he or she feels scared. Alternatively, let your dog take refuge under furniture and include an old, unwashed piece of clothing like a woolly jumper so that your dog can smell your scent and feel comfortable. But if he or she comes to you for comfort, make sure that you give it to him/her. Ignoring your dog would only make things worse as he or she wouldn’t understand your withdrawal from them. DO NOT Take your dog to a firework display. Don’t assume he or she is happy just because they don’t ‘kick up a fuss’. Excessive yawning and panting can be more discreet indicaters that your dog is stressed. 94

DO NOT Tie your dog up outside while fireworks are being let off. DO NOT Leave your dog on his own or in a separate room from you or try and tempt him out if he does retreat, as this may cause more stress. DO NOT Change routines more than necessary, as this can be stressful for some dogs. DO NOT Tell your little friend off or try to force them to face their fears. This will only make them more distressed. It is important to remember that it is natural for a dog to be scared of loud noises and unfamiliar sights and sounds Throughout the year, acclimatizing your dog to noises prior to the big night is a worth while task. Try playing a sound CD with firework noises or firework sound videos on ‘Youtube’ at a low level to let your dog get used to the sound in the background. There are many noise CDs on the market which give you the opportunity to introduce your dog to a variety of potentially disturbing noises in a controlled manner. However, if your pet is severely noise phobic, sound CDs may make the situation worse. We suggest that you give us a call and seek help from an experienced animal behaviorist. As already mentioned, you can help your canine family member by preparing a ‘safe haven’ or a ‘dog den’. If your dog already has a hiding place then this space can be used making it as snug and secure for your dog as possible by adding blankets or bedding. If you are making your ‘dog den’ from scratch try to do this a few weeks in advance so that your dog knows it is a safe place when fireworks start. Plugging in a pheromone support / natural anxiety reduction diffuser or using an equivalent spray in the area of the den will increase the security felt by your dog. Some new, natural and high effective products actually start to work immediately. Please feel free to ring our team for advice on this subject. We understand how difficult it can be and we stock a range of products that we know and trust. Some are 100% natural and can be used in conjunction with others for out more worried little friends. Please remember to consult us if your dog has any health problems or is taking any medication before giving remedies to help him cope with fireworks night.
