Whitby
October 2016
Hello and welcome to the October edition of the Whitby Advertiser, the number one choice for advertising in Whitby and the surrounding district. I hope that you enjoy this new edition of our magazine, whether you are a resident or business owner, or a visitor or holidaymaker who has picked up a copy. The summer months are now behind us and the weather certainly has an autumnal feel with quite a few misty mornings of late. This month, our magazine reflects the change in seasons too with hotels and restaurants focussing on the upcoming festive season and advertising their Christmas parties and meals - have you booked your office or works party yet? If not, browse the following pages and you could soon be sorted! Speaking of food and drink, don’t forget to do our ever-popular prize crossword sponsored by the Hare & Hounds at Hawsker. The prize is a fabulous Sunday lunch for two there so don’t delay, grab a cuppa and pen, put your feet up and get your thinking cap on, and it could be you and your loved one sitting at the table and enjoying Sunday lunch soon!! This month, the page count of our magazine has increased to 104 pages to accommodate a number of new advertisers as well as some interesting articles. Our November and December issues are looking like being busy issues too and are filling up quickly so if you are a restaurant or hotel wanting to advertise your Christmas party meals with us or a shop with a range of Christmas gift ideas, do get in touch soon or you could miss out! Just give us a call or pop into our offices at the Green Lane Centre, which have disabled access and ample free parking, and discuss your advertising requirements at leisure with our friendly team over a coffee. Alternatively, I am happy to visit you at your business or home if this is more convenient. Our graphic designer Graham will then design your advert at no extra charge or, if you prefer, you can supply your own artwork. The Whitby Advertiser is a cost effective way of advertising for many businesses, bringing new customers and increased sales so why not let the Whitby Advertiser work for your business? Just give us a call today and let us do the rest! Enjoy the following pages and have a great October!

COMMUNITY NOTICE
APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITIES AT WHITBY FISHING SCHOOL Did you leave school this summer? Don’t know what to do next? You will know by now that requirements have changed and you are required to continue in education or training for a further year. Or, have you left school, are aged between 16 and 24 years and thinking about Apprenticeship training? Whitby Fishing School can offer a 12 month Apprenticeship in Sea Fishing. The school is taking applications now for October enrolments. The October enrolment covers an initial 10 weeks in the classroom at Whitby, with accommodation and training provided free of charge for those who live away. These classes cover qualifications for the compulsory sea-going certificates as well as Maths and English. During this time you will be trained in various maritime subjects covering such things as navigation, communications, vessel stability, maritime regulations and of course the practical side – net making and repair and pot making and repair. You will then have a break over Christmas and New Year. After the Christmas and New Year break, you will be training on vessels to complete the remainder of the 12 months apprenticeship. Apprentices are found placements on various fishing vessels to complete their work based learning and build up essential experience. The school also provides a valuable, quality safety kit, which is given to the apprentice upon achievement of the qualification. The achievement of the qualification will also include approximately 12 certificates. This ensures that at the end of the course, together with experience, certification and kit, each qualified apprentice is very employable. Towards the end of training, apprentices are supported in applying for deckhand positions in ports both locally and around the UK coast. The 4
majority of our trainees progress straight from training into work. Note – this is a non-employed apprenticeship. Apprentices will receive a weekly allowance and the company will cover expenses for any travel, training & certification, safety kit and accommodation whilst the apprentice is away from his/her home. The fishing school has a reputation second to none and many of the apprentices who qualified are earning a good living in maritime occupations. Interested? Contact the school on 01947 825871 for further information, arrange a visit or to request an application form.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERS WANTED AT YOUTH HOSTELS
Youth Hostels in Boggle Hole and Whitby are calling on members of the local community to volunteer and get involved with its new Supporter Groups initiative. Supporter Groups are being established at Youth Hostels throughout England and Wales and are designed to bring together local people who would like to volunteer on a regular basis. As well as volunteers, a co-ordinator for each of the new YHA Supporter Groups at Whitby and Boggle Hole are also being sought.
Whether you have DIY, creative, gardening or organisational skills, YHA would love to hear from people who would be interested in joining its Supporter Group.
Volunteering offers a great opportunity to make new friends and contribute to the local community. It’s also a way for families to do something together, 48
as anyone over the age of 14 is able to become a YHA volunteer.
Last year 3,500 volunteers gave 187,000 hours of their time across the YHA (England and Wales) network, making a valuable contribution to both youth hostels and the charity. Keith Webster, Duty Manager at YHA Boggle Hole said: “We appreciate every single hour of time that people volunteer with us as it helps us maintain and run the Youth Hostels. We really want to get our new Support Groups off the ground and it relies on people in the community coming forward and getting involved.
“As well as putting something back into the community, volunteering is also a great social and family activity. It’s also an invaluable opportunity for younger people to develop their CV, skills and experience and help get them work ready.” If you want to sign up to your local YHA Supporters Group, visit: https://jobs.yha.org.uk/volunteeringform/ to fill out a short volunteering form. For more information about other YHA volunteering opportunities, visit: www.yha.org.uk/volunteering or email volunteers@yha.org.uk

STRANGE WHITBY TALES....
The Whitby Wyrm In the old days, when dragons were known as ‘wyrms’, Yorkshire was riddled with the vile creatures. One such monster lurked in the wooded valleys between Whitby and Loftus. This ‘wyrm’ is claimed to have been the source for the Grendal monster in the famous saga, Beowulf – and there is evidence that the whole Beowulf tale originated in the Loftus district. The narrow valley where the dragon dwelt was even called Grenedale, (Grendal), although nowadays it is known as ‘Grinkle’. Grinkle is still a valley of dark shadows and thorny trees. Caves lead deep into the hillsides. It was in one of these caves that the Whitby Wyrm made its lair. At first the creature fed upon sheep, stray dogs and the odd naughty child. People left it alone and avoided the valley. But as it grew in size and power, the wyrm developed a taste for human flesh. The flesh it came to like best of all was that of pretty young women, the purer the better; virgins best of all.
The wyrm had powers that made women especially vulnerable to its tastes. At the full moon it could shape shift to present itself as a handsome young man with dark flowing hair and a powerful physique. It also had the power to hypnotize its victims. Once its eyes had been met there was no escaping. Women were easily lured back to the lair, where the dragon held them captive for several days before devouring them alive. Of course, the men of the area went armed into the woods against the beast, but it knew every twist and turn of the narrow valley. None who entered the woods there ever came out alive. Eventually no one dared venture in and so the monster had its pick of young women whenever the moon was full. A roving knight by the name of Tommy Gobbling, (also known as ‘Tammy Gabbling’ – for he did like to talk) , was passing through the area, searching for adventure and fortune. Tommy was a former squire of the great giant, Wade, who used to rule the area north of Whitby. Tommy had wandered the earth far and wide after the death of his master, but eventually returned to the district and was was captivated by the beauty of his former home. He decided to spend some time there again and thought he might find a local lass to show him the sights and delights of the district. Tommy had always liked a pretty girl for company, but he was puzzled that he could not see any in the streets or inns of the town. One of the old 50
crones in a tavern out at Lythe, an ancient hostelry now known as The Stiddy, caught his eye and waved him over. She told Tommy of the plight of Whitby and Loftus the towns around. All the pretty women, she told him, were kept under lock and key to keep them safe from the evil wyrm. After hearing her story, Tommy thought a while as he sipped his ale and he formed a cunning plan. ‘I has a reet cunning plan,’ he said to the crone there in The Stiddy. ‘I reckon everything can be all reet!’
The next day, Tommy promised the Lords and Gentry of the district that he could slay the wyrm, but only in return for some farm and woodland thereabouts, as well as the loveliest pure woman still left alive within a ten mile radius. The lady he sought turned out, by popular agreement, to be the youngest daughter of the local squire, Lord Mulgrace. She was a bright eyed, quick witted young lady called Belladonna. Belladonna insisted on being party to her nuptial arrangements. She listened to Tommy Gobbling gabbling as he spoke to the gathered wise-folk, and she saw the sense of his cunning plan. Also, she found him good fun, and not that bad looking, with firm muscles in all the right places, and so she agreed to go along with things. On the next full moon, Tommy and Belladonna together gathered all the young Whitby women, had them bathe and scent themselves with fine perfumes, then led them up to Whitby Abbey. Hand in hand, they made a circle about the ancient pond there. Tommy stood in the centre of the pond, waist deep in the water.
As the moon rose, the monster emerged from its lair up in Grinkle and sniffed the air. It sensed the perfume and loveliness of a band of young maidens to the south, so winged skyward and flew toward Whitby. Spying the ring of pretty girls about the abbey pond, it swept down, intent on leading them one and all back to its cave. The wyrm landed just outside the circle of beautiful girls. There, under the risen moon, it shapeshifted into a strapping young man. It approached the circle, humming a tune, hoping to make them turn around and meet its luring eyes. The girls held strong though, staring at the moon reflected in the pond, just as Tommy and Belladonna had instructed. In one hand Tommy held an open wine bottle, in the other a sword. Upon Belladonna’s call the circle of girls
STRANGE WHITBY TALES.... continued broke hands and ran back into the sacred shelter of the abbey. Only Tommy and the monster were left there in the moonlight. The wyrm, infuriated and never one to resist a challenge, rushed into the pond to rip Tommy to shreds. Tommy, cunning planner as he was, simply smiled, raising the bottle and the sword above his head. Like Saint George of old, he shouted the famous dragon slayer’s motto: ‘A sharp blade for my enemies, and a cup of wine for my friends.’ He poured the contents of the bottle into the pond. The liquid was a sort of wine – but not one that devilspawn would want to taste. It was holy water from Hinderwell, blessed by Saint Hild of the abbey herself. The wyrm shrieked in agony. The whole pond, by dilution, had become holy water, and was no place for a creature rooted in evil. Tommy waded forward and with a mighty stroke of his sword smote off the creature’s head. The lure-eyed. handsome youth was transformed back to the shape of a writhing, headless wyrm. All was over for the vile creature – its reign of terror was over at last. The monster slain, Tommy Gobbling and Lady Belladonna had a great wedding. They lived happily ever after, most of the time, as you do, as man and wife, up in the woodlands around Sandsend.
Once again, Whitby and the district thereabouts became famous for its beautiful maidens. If you look hard enough, so it is said, a few can still be seen around the streets and taverns of the town.
If you wend your up there to the abbey today you’ll find, tucked away in the gardens, a wonderful sculpture of the Whitby Wyrm, apparently funded by Scarborough Borough Council. This is said to be the actual body of’ the vile creature. It is shrunken and diminished, encased in elf-wrought silver to keep it contained, for, so it is said, a wyrm is only ever ‘suspended’, never quite killed. This silver wyrm is best looked upon only in daylight, and never - never ever - by the light of a full moon. Should it meet your eye under that full moon when there is a certain alignment of the planets and the stars... well, best not go there. That’s another story. A story hopefully never to be told. The last thing Whitby needs now is the return of another evil, parasitic monster! Chris Firth © 2016

BUYERS & VENDORS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS! This month, for a few minutes only, I thought I might try a different profession – and become an agony aunt! Whilst I am really not qualified to help anyone with their love life (in the slightest!) I can help answer a handful of the questions we commonly get asked by buyers and vendors. Here are some queries which often pop up and, hopefully, some helpful answers: What is stamp duty and how much will it cost me? In a nutshell it is a tax on land and property transactions. Its full name is ‘Stamp Duty Land Tax’ but you will, more often than not, see it referred to as ‘Stamp Duty’ or (SDLT) Properties under £40,000 are exempt and then the level to be paid is staggered depending on the sale price of the property you are buying. From the 1st of April 2016 an increase to second properties/ buy-to-lets was introduced. Purchasers buying accommodation, other than their main residence, now have to pay an extra 3% on top of the usual stamp duty rates. Visit https://www.gov. uk/stamp-duty-land-tax/residential-property-rates for more information and for a really handy ‘Stamp Duty Calculator’ which eliminates any need for mental arithmetic! What is a ‘North York Moors National Parks Occupancy Restriction’? Many people are flummoxed when they see this mentioned on property details. All new builds within the Park (outside of the larger settlements) are subject to this restriction. Again, the nutshell version, is that only purchasers who have lived/ currently live within the Nation Park for 5 years or more, or have an essential need to move to the area, are eligible to buy a property with a National Parks Occupancy Restriction. The reason for this is cited as being so that “new housing development meet local need rather than external demand” Call our office if you would like more information. Why do some properties have restrictions on holiday letting and pets? Leasehold properties can have certain restrictions, historically, written within their Leases. In some cases where there are restrictions on pets, one well-behaved pet may be permitted following permission being granted by the management company. How easy it is to lift restrictions on holiday letting all depends on how the management arrangements are set up and would likely involve legal fees. The simplest way to move forward, if you want a commercial holiday let, is to find a leasehold property without restrictions or, of course, a Freehold property.
When is the best time to put my property onto the market? At one time the answer would have always been – spring/the beginning of summer. But now we are finding sales are being made more consistently all year round. For example a few years ago things used to slow down during the build up to Christmas but over the past few years more people have started property hunting, and offering, in November and December. Basically, the best time to put your house onto the market is – whenever you feel ready to. Is it better for myself, or my estate agent, to conduct viewings on my house? Although some vendors like to conduct viewings themselves, the feedback we have received from viewers is that they feel more comfortable looking with an agent and more likely to provide honest feedback and ask the questions they really want the answers to. Should I holiday let or long-term let? This will partly depend on what you want to get out of the property yourself. If you live out of the area, and may want to visit yourself, then a property which is a holiday let can have the benefit of doubling up as a second home. If you are looking for a hassle free investment then instructing Hendersons, to find you a good long-term tenant, could be a route to seriously consider (especially if you use our full management option which takes all stress out of your hands) Though many holiday lets give excellent returns it is best doing your sums to figure out the most lucrative way to go forward taking into account all costs including agent fees. Contact us and we’ll be happy to advise. What does ‘Guide Price mean? We get asked this a surprising amount. Guide price basically means ‘offers around’ and the reason that it is not labelled as ‘offers under’ is that in some cases offers, on popular properties, may rise to the market price - or over it. Basically, ‘Guide Price’ implies the vendor is willing to consider offers. If you have any questions, with regards to buying, selling or renting, then do not hesitate to contact us at info@hendersons-online.co.uk and we will be happy to help. SO MUCH TO DO AND SEE ON THE COAST! Summer may be over but the Yorkshire coast can draw in the crowds at any time of the year with a jam-packed calendar of events keeping the tourists coming (and the locals busy) all year round!
It may feel like the kids have only been back in school for a minute but October half-term is coming round fast (where has September gone?) and soon Whitby will be full again with families braving the beach for a quick paddle in the sea and making the journey up the 199 steps to the Abbey. And, now that the beaches are open for dogs to enjoy, couples are taking advantage of those little breaks from work to take their furry friends for a beachy break. The end of October looks set to be busy as usual, with Whitby gearing up for the Bram Stoker Film Festival at the end of the month and the famous Goth Week beginning at the start of November. We love seeing the variety of gothic costumes on display, you can’t walk down the street without bumping into a variety of eye-catchingly outfitted goths, vampires, metalheads and steampunks. The bi-annual event 54
remains as popular as ever, more than 1,500 goths attended last year’s event! We’ll be decorating our windows at our office on Flowergate to celebrate and if you’re planning on dressing up and joining in the fun please do pop by and say hello to us!
Speaking of costumes, during the first weekend of each December Robin Hood’s Bay takes a step back in time and visitors are transported back to the Victorian Era. With historical enthusiasts donning Victorian costume in addition to some of the locals, it definitely feels like the old times and it’s a great event to get into the spirit of Christmas with a Christmas tree exhibition, open cottages and games in the dock. Christmas on the coast is always popular and our properties are already getting snapped up by those wanting to escape to Whitby for a special festive break over Christmas and New Year. Many of our cottages are opening up for short break bookings for the Christmas period within the next couple of weeks and we expect the town to be a hive of activity as usual with happy holidaymakers celebrating in style!
With so much to see and do its looks set to be a busy few months for Whitby. It certainly keeps us and our holiday home owners on our toes! Article courtesy of Ingrid Flute’s Yorkshire Holiday Cottages

TO NEUTER, OR NOT TO NEUTER?
Neutering your dog, cat or rabbit is a highly important and often under valued part of being a responsible owner. DOGS.
Spaying your bitch can help to prevent your female dog from having many serious health problems. The two which we see all too often in practice are womb infections and breast cancer. Breast cancer is particularly dangerous, resulting in death for about 50% of canine cases. Both will make your dog feel very poorly and cost lots to treat. The most effective way to provide this protection is to ensure your dog is spayed either before or after her first season. In male dogs, neutering helps to prevents testicular cancer, another serious canine disease. The right age to spay or castrate your dog varies by breed and development; discuss getting your pet neutered at their first puppy vaccinations so you can formulate a plan. But just because you’ve not neutered your adult dog don’t think it’s too late. Give the surgery a call and we’ll discuss the procedure with you whatever you dog’s age.
From about six months of age, un-spayed females go into heat for two to three weeks at a time, usually twice a year. This period of time can bring about a number of troublesome behaviours such as howling, whimpering, being unsettled, spotting blood and phantom pregnancies. It will also attract the attention of every unneutered male within smelling distance. It is typically 3-4 moths after the last season when it is safest to neuter your bitch as the womb will be at its lowest vascularity. An unneutered dog is more likely to display a number of problem behaviours in an effort to find a mate. He’ll want to roam, which can mean running away and generally unruly behaviour. Marking is another important mating behaviour, but not a very pleasant in your home. And unneutered dogs are also more likely to display aggressive behaviours as they mature. Neutering saves you money in the long run too. The cost of caring for a litter of puppies or handling the potential medical consequences of not neutering is many times that of a neutering procedure. Spaying or neutering your pup means fewer unwanted doggies, and the heartbreakingly high number of homeless but healthy canines being reduced.
CATS. As your cat reaches sexual maturity between four to six months old, they could potentially have kittens 94
MONTHLY VETERINARY ADVICE Meg Dale BSc RVN MBVNA of BECK VETS
whilst they are still kittens themselves! Therefore, you’ll need to start thinking about cat neutering early on. Just like dogs, neutering felines means that your cat will avoid any unplanned pregnancies and it can also protect them from certain diseases including breast cancer and uterine infections.. Neutering your cat will help curb the naughty behaviour that comes with sexual maturity, such as spraying urine to mark their territory. Neutered cats are less likely to stray from home, which protects them from being involved in road traffic accidents and fighting with other cats. This also means a reduced risk of contracting certain diseases, including feline leukaemia and feline Aids. Your pet may become more affectionate. Female cats in particular often become gentler!
RABBITS. Neutering your rabbit not only stops your rabbit breeding, it can also help it live a longer, healthier life with a reduced risk of cancer and urinary tract infections. Ask us about neutering your male or female rabbit when it is between four and six months old. In males, this can help stop your rabbit becoming aggressive and spraying urine. It’s a good idea to keep your buck away from female rabbits for up to three weeks after the operation. If you don’t have your female rabbit spayed, your pet can grow up to be very aggressive and territorial, commonly scratching, growling and trying to bite you! This does not make them the ideal child’s pet they are usually expected to be. Spaying also reduces the risk of uterine cancer once your rabbit is an adult. This is the most common killer in doe rabbits.
We take extra special care of every single dog, cat or rabbit who comes into our surgery to be neutered. They will receive the highest standards of vet and nurse attention throughout their time with us, as well as high level pain relief and lots of TLC. Castration and spaying are both day procedures but we like to see all our patients back for a postop check after two days. Your pet will require some special home care for 10-12 days including lead exercise for dogs, cats being kept in with a litter tray, use of a buster collar or body suit and keeping a careful eye on the wound. We will provide notes so do not worry about remembering everything. The decision to neuter your pet is one of the most important choices you will make as an owner. The Beck Veterinary Practice Team are here to answer any questions you have.
